Default The Office of Professor Ansley Finch

Once Professor Finch permits you entrance into his office, you are met with his carefully selected décor. The furniture is vintage-inspired yet retains a modern look and his own artwork is featured on the walls. A tall bookshelf lines one wall, complete with historic texts and novels, as well as the occasional book on selected artists or technique. His desk is typically cluttered with papers, pens, and unfinished projects, though at times it is neat and organized depending on Professor Finch's mood and if he finally got tired of the mess or couldn't find something.

You may take a seat in one of the two chairs arranged in front of his desk. They may be quite stylish but they do not lack in comfort. Feel free to speak to Professor Finch about anything you need unless it’s drama, please no drama, he’s here to assist you in any way he can.

OOC: Please post here first and wait for admittance before posting in this thread, thank you!

SPOILER!!: Ansley
Ansley had taken a few minutes to straighten up the classroom and get the portraits put away with a little help from a student. He had gotten caught up in conversation and getting things squared away that he had nearly forgotten that he had asked another student to see him after class. Of course he did tell her when she had some time, not knowing whether or not she had another class directly afterwards.

After he finished up, Ansley headed for his office, noticing Hadleigh already there and waiting for him, sitting in one of the chairs outside the door. "Hi, Hadleigh," he smiled, pausing in front of the waiting area a moment before reaching for his office doorknob. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long, I had to clean up some after class. But if you have time now, we can head into my office." He opened the door to let her in, before he'd follow in after.

Sitting on the chair in the waiting area gave Hady the few moments of quiet one needed to clear their head when they had a ton of things on their mind. Which in the girls case was just about all the time. Having been sitting there maybe only two or three minutes before she heard the Professor arrive wasn't that bad of a wait at all. In fact it was just enough time for her to gather some thoughts and get her focus on just this one topic.

"Hello, Professor," Hadleigh greeted warmly rising to her feet, hitching the strap of her bag up onto her shoulder more. "No of course not I was only here a few moments." Nothing at all to worry about. Surely he was a busy man having just had a lesson just as she had just come from it. Did she have some time right now though. Well yes she did otherwise she wouldn't have wasted either of their time but coming to his office right then to speak. "I do, I have some free time before my next lesson. Thank you," she gave a small smile before stepping inside the office and glancing around. It appeared to be your average office. Maybe a bit out of sorts but it didn't matter as that wasn't the point here. Hady moved forward and sat herself down in one of the chairs before Ansley's desk. She was ready to talk about this portrait painting stuff and everything that went along with it!

It was good to know that he hadn't made Hadleigh wait too long while he took care of things after class, though he figured if she hadn't had the time right then that she would have come back later. Maybe even left him a note in the waiting area. But as it was, she had the time to wait for him and spend a few minutes talking about things.

Ansley followed the girl into his office and took a seat behind his desk as she found one in front of it. "So, Hadleigh, tell me a little bit about yourself." A little small talk to get to know one of his students wouldn't hurt before he got to the point of their meeting. "Do you have any experience with visual arts? And what makes you interested in magical portraiture?" He'd like to gauge experience level, though that could be visually assessed later as well.

Settling down into the chair Hady let her gaze sweep around the room taking in some of the items that she saw. Usually ones room or their office could tell you a bit about the person but not always. There was no better way to know someone then to really honestly speak with them which it appeared was what Ansley was trying to do. This was fine by her.

A bit about herself? Like what exactly. "Well I'm a fifth year Slytherin which you already know. I really enjoy learning new things and I take pride in the fact that I'm a very hard worker and normally catch on to new things quickly. I adore animals and want to be a Creatures Healer someday." Was this good enough? Hady thought so at least for now and stopped talking to let her gaze meet that of her Professors. Experience. Ugg.

"Not very much honestly. Back in my first and second year I used to take a ton of photos but that's something I don't do much anymore." Not that she didn't want to. Just other things had needed to come first. It happened sometimes. And there it was. The question as to why she wanted to do this. How much should she tell him? Was her reasoning way to personal? Maybe. It would be honest and true though. Letting out a small breath Hady looked down at her lap for several moments. "I want to be able to bring a connect between people. Most portraits are of those that have passed. It gives us all a chance to get to know that person in a more personal way then just reading about them in some text book." She paused here to collect her thoughts again. "For me...it's a bit more personal. It's a chance though to sometimes reconnect with those we thought we've truly lost." Did that explain anything? Probably not. Oops.

Ansley leaned back in his seat and listened as Hadleigh began to talk a little bit about herself. It seemed like all pretty much standard stuff for a girl her age, not that it surprised him at all. He just wanted to know a little about her, not really knowing many of his students that well yet. He liked the hard-worker part, though it remained to be seen if she really was or if she said that for his benefit, but she was here looking to do something extra, so he hoped that it was the former.

"A Creatures Healer.. that's an interesting career," he nodded slowly, thinking a moment about it. He didn't personally know anyone who was, and he wondered about a connection between that and the arts. But not everything had to relate. "Do you do any extra work with Professor Draper?" Just curious, and really making small talk more than anything else, but if she was really interested in that type of a career then it certainly wasn't a bad idea. Though it did leave him wondering how much time she did have on her hands.

Her lack of experience didn't surprise him too much though, knowing the lack of opportunity that Hogwarts had in that area when he was her age. "But it's something you're interested in?" Obviously, or she wouldn't be here. "I had to create art in my own time too when I was a student," he nodded. "It wasn't till I was a little older that I had any formal training." Other than extra-curricular classes during the summer when he was a kid.

Ansley looked at her curiously though when Hadleigh fell silent for a moment. Hmm... it did sound like a very personal reason for wanting to study magical portraiture, though some of her explanation sounded much like his reasoning for including them in class. "I agree," he smiled. "I think many portraits can give a more interesting and personal angle to the stories of the past. Though I wonder.. is there someone in your life that you are wanting to reconnect with in this way?" It was just the way she had answered that made him curious, but it didn't really affect his decision in teaching her painting.

Though I wonder.. is there someone in your life that you are wanting to reconnect with in this way?" It was just the way she had answered that made him curious, but it didn't really affect his decision in teaching her painting.

Hady nodded smiling lightly. "I always wanted to be a healer and help others. My love for all creatures is what steered me in that direction. I have spoken with Professor Draper and he's going to try to get me an internship or a job of some sort this summer in the field." So technically as of right now she wasn't doing much in the line of her career unless a lot of studying counted for this.

"Yes, Sir." She nodded firmly. Sculpting and painting weren't her best but she could learn. Like everything else she did Hady would always give it her all. "What type of art did you do?" Drawing, painting, sculpting? So many forms of art.

From the moment the word fell from her lips and she tried to explain her reasoning Hady knew the question was going to be asked. The look of curiousity was first followed by an agreement to her reasoning. Shifting a little in her chair, hazel eyes fell onto her lap for a brief moment as she let out a breath. "Yes Professor," she admitted turning her eyes onto his again as she spoke. Would this alter his decision in teaching her how to make a portrait? Please don't let it be so! If anything her having someone she wanted to connect with would only make her work much harder to learn!

It was a shame though, because it sounded interesting and he thought that maybe it could have been a good addition to the discussion.

He leaned against his door frame, listening as she continued. Oh, well that was great that she still had the thought on her mind enough to send for the newspaper clippings. He was very interested indeed. "Of course. I'd love to hear some stories. Why don't you come in and we can talk about it." He stood back a bit to allow her to enter his office if she wanted to. "I'm not busy if you wanted to talk now." Unless she had just stopped by to drop it off before she had to be on her way. But that was okay too.

Kitty followed Professor Finch into his office. She stood in the entrance for a moment gazing curiously at the vintage furniture and the book shelf. Upon seeing the books she wondered if Professor Finch loved books as much as Professor Kitridge. He certainly had a lot.

Where to begin? Kitty had prepared everything she was going to say about her grandfather, but now that she was here she wasn't certain where to begin. "Um...okay so this is the newspaper my mom sent me about my Grandfather Nicholas Valentine." It seemed the best place to start. She held it out for Professor Finch to take. "The first paragraphs are written by the newspaper about him, and the rest of it is one of his most interviews. It happened during the Goblin rebellion about fifty years ago and he's interviewing one of the most dangerous goblin leaders. There is a famous moving portrait of them talking but my mom doesn't have it. It's somewhere in a museum I think."

She stood awkwardly in silence then, not certain if she should sit down or wait for him to say to sit down.

It was always nice to get to know his students a little bit better and find out their plans for the future. Ansley nodded as he listened to Hadleigh elaborate about her interest in creatures. It might not be anything artistic, but he could tell that she was a dedicated worker and good student, and he very much approved. "Well, I started with drawing on my own," he said when the subject turned back to him. "I had some lessons during summers, and I got into painting also. When I went to University, I did many different types of art. I was actually an art and art history teacher before I came here." And when he was studying at school, he was required to know at least a little about a lot of things.

Hmm. Ansley looked at Hadleigh for a few moments, considering her and her words. The answer that she had given him didn't affect whether or not he would begin teaching her in the ways of magical portraiture. But it more made him curious than anything else. It wasn't exactly his business though so he didn't pry. If she wanted to tell him more about it then she would. "Well, the magic infused in a portrait is slightly different for a currently living person than for a currently deceased person. It's a little easier to evoke the person's personality if they are still alive when their portrait is created but that doesn't mean it can't be done." It just meant that the personality was more "ghosted". He knew all of the more recently painted portraits that he had brought to class had been done while the subject was still alive. One of the really old ones, he wasn't completely sure.

"So, if you're still interested, I'd like to schedule a weekly lesson in the studio a couple doors down. Which night of the week are you free?"

Ansley headed into his office, expecting Kitty to follow him in. He stood over by his desk and turned to her as she began talking about the newspaper clipping and her grandfather. Curious. He took the article then walked around the other side of his desk to sit down and read it.

He listened to the girl continue as his eyes scanned the opening sentences. Glancing up he gestured to one of the chairs in front of his desk as he noticed she was still standing. "You can sit down if you want." He wasn't sure if she was waiting for permission or if she'd prefer to stand. "Fifty years ago, you say?" He supposed that would fit in with her age and that of her family. Though fifty years ago was nothing compared to what went on four hundred years ago. Not that he'd expect her to have an article relating to a family member back then. That would have been truly remarkable.

"The really large, impacting rebellions were several hundred years ago," he told her with a smile, choosing to use the moment as an educational opportunity. "Many battles fought, legislation written and rewritten... there has been tension since then, but noting quite as big as that." Thankfully, really, because who wanted to have war and rebellion all the time. But he started to read what she had brought. It was pretty interesting so far.

One of the really old ones, he wasn't completely sure.

"So, if you're still interested, I'd like to schedule a weekly lesson in the studio a couple doors down. Which night of the week are you free?"

Sitting up in the seat straighter she set her hands on her lap as she listened to everything that was being said. A former art and art history teacher?! Awesome! A small smile came to her face as she nodded her clear approval of this knowledge. So working on some art on her own wouldn't be a bad idea at all if she wanted to better herself at this. Something she could do in her spare time between lessons and studying. "I tend to doodle here and there though I'm not the best at it." She had gotten better over the years.

What exactly did that mean? It would still be them though, yes? Just not as vivid as when they were alive or something? Hady tilted her head a little bit in a form of possible confusion before asking quietly, "It would still be that person though just not as lively as they had been?" Was that what he meant? If so she could handle that.

Was she still interested?! YES! YES! YES!

"Yes sir, I am. I can be free any night really but Monday's are usually good as is the weekend." However if she needed to rearrange some of her other tasks she certainly had no problem with doing so.

It was good to know that Hadleigh had some art interest despite the fact that opportunities were limited here. And the fact that she did some on her own was encouraging. "Well, the more you practice at it, the better you will get." He supposed that could apply to anything, but he noticed that people sometimes thought that if they were not immediately good at art, then they just weren't good at it. Just like anything else, it took practice.

"Well, technically it's a portrait of that person, whether they had been painted while still living or after they've passed," he tried to explain. "It becomes a little more difficult to infuse the memories and personality after they've died, though it can still be magically done. It's just more of a facsimile than the true thing." Did that make more sense? He knew it was hard to completely understand.

He gave her a small smile as she agreed. "Mondays work just fine for me. You can leave the weekend for yourself if you'd like. Why don't we start this Monday after dinner, about seven?" It would be a good start at least.

Practice makes perfect. A rule she had grown used to hearing many years ago when she was still a small child. It worked in nearly any situation like dancing, playing the guitar and drums and even when learning to cast a patronus. The more you tried the better you become. "I'll keep at it just like I do everything else." No worries there.

Going over what Ansley had just said to her in her mind a few times it did make sense. Even if it would be tougher to accomplish that didn't at all mean she would give it, it just meant she would try all that much more harder. When she wanted something bad enough Hady would make it happen. "Oh, well I suppose that makes sense."

Mondays. Check. Seven O'clock after dinner. Check. She would be there. "That sounds great Sir, thank you," she answered with a small smile.

Kitty sat down gratefully on one of the comfy chairs when Ansley gave her permission and listened dutifully as he talked about the ancient goblin rebellions - rebellions which truthfully she knew very little about. The only things she knew about them were the brief passages she had read in text books, but that didn't mean she wasn't interested. History of Magic was one of the her favorite studies. "The rebellion my grandfather covered only lasted four years, of course nothing like the rebellions hundreds of years ago. I'm surprised that there aren't any goblin countries." Random statement.

"Professor, this is kind of topic but I have a question about Hogwarts that I've been trying to get an answer to all year." Now was Kitty's chance to ask what she'd been dying to know for ages. She pressed on excitedly. "Do you know the full backstory of the Tapestry on the fourth floor?"

Hadleigh seemed like a good student and hard-worker from the little bit he had talked to her, and her affirmative answer didn't surprise him. In fact it was rather encouraging that she seemed as motivated as she did. It would do her well in many aspects of her life, and not just learning a new skill. Not to mention he'd appreciate that in anyone he would be giving extra teaching to.

"Alright, Hadleigh,"
he smiled. "I will see you in the art studio this Monday, then. Make sure you wear old clothing, or cast an impervious charm on what you're wearing." He did have aprons, but painting could be messy. "Did you have any other questions?" Otherwise, they'd get started on Monday. And he was rather excited about teaching someone magical portraiture.

Ansley listened to Kitty as she explained a little more about her grandfather's involvement. Even though the rebellion that he was in wasn't as large or prominent as the others didn't mean it wasn't an important part of history. And he was happy to listen to her story. "Hmm," he started, thinking aloud. "I guess I can't imagine any place on earth that humans, magical or not, wouldn't have established themselves." That was what she meant, right? A place for goblins all their own? "Goblins and humans do have a much better relationship now than they did in the past. I'm not so sure they'd want to segregate themselves like that."

He looked at her curiously as she changed the subject, noting she seemed rather eager to discuss this next topic. "Tapestry?" He had to think a moment about what she meant, but it didn't take him too long to remember. "Well, I do know some of it.. but I'm not sure that I know the full backstory." Did anyone ever know the full story of anything, especially if they had not been there? "Is there something in particular that you'd like to know?"

Oh! A professor that didn't actually call her Miss Lynch! Nor did he call her Hady like everyone else did but rather Hadleigh. Different but not so much that it bothered her just took her by surprise a little bit. The brunette did smile in reply though as she sat up more. "I will." Old clothing. Easy enough. Impervious charm just in case. Another easy task she could handle. Other questions? Nope. None. "I don't think so right this minute. I'll see you on Monday evening. Thank you, Professor Finch." With one more warm smile she got to her feet and slung the the strap of her bag over her shoulder to take her leave. No sense in taking up anymore of the professors time if everything had been handled.

It was time to get to her next lesson and then get some practicing in.

Did anyone ever know the full story of anything, especially if they had not been there? "Is there something in particular that you'd like to know?"

"I suppose so," said Kitty, agreeing with Ansley about goblins not really wanting their own country. It was logical and she was eager to move on to the Tapestry.

Kitty straightened excitedly as he admitted that he did know something about the Tapestry. "Ooh good I was hoping you would!" She dug in her robe pockets for the other newspapers she had brought for him. "One day I was reading Hogwarts a History and three sheets of newsprint fell out. They were articles from the school newspaper many years ago and they were talking about mysterious dark forces behind the Tapestry. Here look I have them with me." And she gave the carefully folded newsprints to the Professor. As he looked at them she continued. "From reading them I realized that there used to be a corridor behind the Tapestry which was something I didn't know before. So after reading them I went to peak behind the Tapestry but there was just wall - which means that it was sealed off!" Kitty's eyes widened excitedly as she went on. "But why would the staff seal off the corridor if it wasn't still dangerous? And the papers never said who was behind the attacks, but it did say the Headmistress at the time knew who they were and what they wanted."

"I've been trying to solve this mystery all year, but no one seems to know anything," continued Kitty. "I asked Professor Kitridge about it and he only asked me what I knew but he didn't say anything, which I thought was really odd. Then in History of Magic I asked Augustus Flume since he's probably been around the castle for a long time, but he didn't know either. Is it classified sir?" She cocked her head curiously as she asked. It it was classified then that would explain why all the grownups she asked didn't seem to know the answer to her questions. She didn't think Professor Ansley wouldn't be mad at her for being curious if it was classified, but she wanted to know the truth.

Ok, great, no questions. Though Ansley was pretty sure there would be plenty once they got started, but there would be time and opportunity to answer them then. He gave her a smile and nod as she thanked him and got to her feet. "You're welcome, Hadleigh. I'll see you Monday." He watched her leave then reached for a book from his bookshelf. Might as well get a little light reading in while he had some time to relax.

Ansley looked at Kitty curiously as she reached into her robes and he glanced at the newspaper clipping she pulled out as she spoke about them. He allowed her to finish speaking, nodding here and there, then grew silent as he took a few minutes to read the articles. He didn't know the full story, but he knew enough as it was a pretty eventful part of fairly recent history.

"This happened about forty years ago," he began once he was finished. "Did your grandparents go to Hogwarts? They might remember some of this if they were here. I'm not sure what Mr. Kitridge would know..." It was a little before his time, though he'd expect him to know something about it. "And I know the portrait of Augustus Flume might have been around the castle a long time, but he's just that - a portrait. I can't see him being all that concerned with things that don't really affect him." And the actual person had been around much earlier in history.

"I can tell you what I know about it though," he said, handing the articles back to her. "The tapestry once guarded a very powerful book called the Book of Mysteria. There was a secret room behind it and the tapestry had magic that served as a deterrent - it actually froze people. There were also several deaths surrounding the book, though I don't think that had to do with the tapestry specifically.." Not directly anyway. He waited for Kitty to absorb that information and if she had further questions which he was sure she would as he left it a bit open.

Kitty could barely contain her excitement as Ansley talked about the Tapestry. Finally, finally there was someone who knew something about the Tapestry and someone who happy to share what he knew with her. She wished that she had brought her notebook with her so that she could write down everything he said. She thought of all her friends that she had discussed the Tapestry with: Mason, Esme, Garreth, Abby, and Julia; and thought excitedly how fun it would be to tell them what Ansley was now telling her.

"Yeah, I think my grandparents attended Hogwarts," Kitty replied a little bit uncertainly. "But I don't know if they were around at that time." She should probably write to her grandmother later today and ask her.

"So the Tapestry was good then, because it was only trying to protect people from the Book of Mysteria. What did the Book of Mysteria do?" It was disturbing to learn that people had died because of this book. "Is the reason why we can't go in the room behind the Tapestry anymore because the book is still there?" Kitty thought back to her brief adventure behind the mirror on the same floor and wondered if they were connected. "Is the tunnel behind the mirror somehow connected to the room that used to be behind the Tapestry?"

Ansley could tell that Kitty was hanging on his every word and this kind of enthusiasm for stories of the past was something he really liked to see. "It might be a good idea to ask," he said, appreciating the stories of people who had actually witnessed events in history. It was actually before his time too, so he only knew what was written about it. And even if they hadn't gone to school here at that time, they might know something related to it anyway.

Well... good was more of a relative term here and he hesitated before he answered. "The tapestry wasn't sentient, so it was neither good nor bad, just doing what it was tasked to do." He tried to think of another example he could use. "Are you familiar with Harry Potter's time at Hogwarts?" Many people knew the story fairly well. "When he went to look for the Philosopher's Stone, there were many challenges put in front of it to keep people away and act as a guard. The tapestry was doing the same for the Book of Mysteria."

And speaking of that book, he should probably explain about it since it seemed that Kitty didn't know much about it. "The Book of Mysteria is an extremely powerful book and a dark wizard named Voltemortist was trying to get it for himself. He imperiused and killed several people in the process." Hopefully that didn't frighten her or anything but it was a part of history and he didn't want to omit it. "I'm not completely sure why that room was closed off afterwards," he shrugged. Maybe it wasn't that important once the book was moved. "No, I don't think so..." He knew a lot of the secret passages when he was a student here and from what he remembered, they weren't connected.

Maybe it wasn't that important once the book was moved. "No, I don't think so..." He knew a lot of the secret passages when he was a student here and from what he remembered, they weren't connected.
Kitty nodded when he asked her if she read about Harry Potter. "I've read all of Harry's adventures. So the Tapestry was kind of like the challenges that were protecting the stone." Kitty got it now. "The charm was probably taken off the Tapestry when the Book was removed because I've touched the Tapestry many times - gently of course, and I never froze."

"Voltemortist sounds like Voldemort. Was he a Death Eater who decided to become the next Voldemort?" And Kitty had one more question for the moment that she could think of. "And was the Book ever destroyed?"

It was no surprise to Ansley that Kitty knew a lot about Harry Potter. Many people did. His stories were rather interesting and read like a book. "Yes, it worked much like that," he nodded in confirmation. "Right... History is a little cloudy on when or how the charm was removed, but it is rather benign now." And it had been for some time. He remembered seeing it when he was a kid at Hogwarts before he even knew the entire story behind it.

Hmm, he was rather surprised that Kitty had never heard of Voltemortist. He was quite notorious, though maybe not quite as much as Voldemort, even if it was more recent. "You're on the right track," he nodded. "Voldemortist was a very powerful dark wizard that was around in the earlier part of this century. And yeah, he idolized Voldemort." Destroyed? Oh no.. Ansley shook his head. "The book is powerful, but it is not evil. It wasn't destroyed, just moved to a secret location."

When Kitty saw that Ansley was surprised that she didn't know who Voldemortist was she felt a little embarrassed. In all the time that she had spent trying to solve the mystery of the Tapestry, how hadn't she come across him? But Kitty knew why. It was because Voldemortist was recent history who she could research in a book, while the Tapestry was more obscure. Now that she knew about the Tapestry she could research Voldemortist on her own. Still, she had two more questions.

"I suppose Voldemortist must be in Azkaban now, right?" If he wasn't, then it looked like the Hag wasn't the only super villain of Hogwarts past running around free.

"I know you probably wouldn't tell me, but do you know where the secret location for the book is? Are there still people trying to get it? I promise, this is my last question."
