Mason was totally ready for this. There was a tiny little knot in her stomach, only because of who her victim partner was.
Of course it was Rachie-Ru. Why did she have to fight one of her best friends? She knew that Rach wasn't all that bad when it came to magic and Mason didn't know whether or not she could challenge Rach the way she had when they had been in groups.
She gave Rachel a warm half-smile and bowed before her, remembering how stern Prof. Hirsch was when it came to respect.
Mason took her place opposite of Rach and pulled her wand from its blue holster, reading the Yew in front of her. She sent a slight-smirk Rach's way and casted the first spell of their duel. "Everte Statum!"
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Even though she was rubbish at dueling, Rachel was not regretting her decision to sign up for the Dueling club. She reasoned a bit of experience would do her well and help her improve. She was even more encouraged because of Professor Hirsch's and Ilia's words to her after the last meeting.
When she found out her first partner would be Mason, Rachel didn't know how to react. Should she be happy she was dueling a good friend of hers or not? Facing Mason right now, she was still undecided but she returned the smile and gave a bow. Etiquette, she remembered.
Oh no! A spell that throws the target backwards was the first spell targeted at her! The Eagle instinctively dodged the spell by quickly darting to the side. Her Shield Charms were usually not very strong and at the moment she did not trust to cast one.
''Expelliarmus.'' Rachel pointed her wand in Mason's direction. She had a back up plan if disarming did not work. ''Spongify.'' This time, her target was the immediate area surrounding Mason and under Mason's feet. It may not be particularly threatening but Rachel felt that a soft and rubbery floor would distract the other girl.

Rachel had dodged the first spell and was now firing her own at Mason.
Mason realised far too late that one of the spells were directly in front of her, she had absolutely no time to even dodge the Disarming Spell. She was knocked to the floor and her wand clattered to the ground. Fantastic!
She scrambled to get it and cast her charm in the nick-of-time, "Protego!"
She let out a sigh as her Shield Charm stopped the spell. Rachel wasn't playing games, and neither was she. Mason was going to have to step up her game if she wanted to beat Rachel.
She got off of the floor and narrowed her eyes. She raised her wand again and cast a Shooting Spell, and silently prayed to Merlin that it hit her friend.

Rachel didn't even have time to be surprised over the fact that her Disarming Charm had made contact with Mason. She just knew that she needed to keep focused, Professor Hirsch's and Ilia's words ringing in her ears.
Mason's narrowed eyes encouraged Rachel to keep her focus even more. Her friend looked dangerous. She was a tad confused, however. What had Mason just done? She had not sent any object shooting in her direction so the Eagle was quite unharmed in anyway.
In retaliation, she used a spell that she had tried practicing earlier in the school year that was usually though in the second year. ''Rictusempra.'' The Tickling charm.

Her spell had been useless.
Wasn't that just wonderful?!
Mason let out a huff and shook her head. She was really going to have to step up her game. If she made another mistake like this she was going to lose.
This time though, Mason was ready for the spell Rach had sent her way. She grinned slightly at the use of one of her favourite spells. Even though she loved laughing, she wasn't about to fall victim to the spell. Mason made a dive for the floor, dodging Rachel's offense.
She scrambled to her feet and pointed her wand right at Rachel's freckled little nose. Sorry mate, but this is war.
She sent the Pus-squirting Hex right at her friend. Hopefully Rachel forgave her later on for this. She couldn't imagine that it would be pleasant having icky yellow stuff dribbling from ones nose. . .
Game on, Rachie-Ru.

Mason dodged her spell. Rachel somehow knew she would have done this so the reaction came as no surprise. However, her opponent and friend was quick in her return spell. The Eagle found she had no time to even dive out of the way nor cast a spell in her own defense.
Ew! Gross!
Nasty, yellow coloured pus was flowing from her nose. Rachel clamped her lips together to stop the stem from entering her mouth. Oh no! That was a badish idea. Since there was zero chance of her doing non verbal spells, she had to open it to say the incantation. "Finite.'' She hastily wiped her lower face on her sleeve then turned her attention back to Mason.
''Expelliarmus.'' The Eagle decided to re-use one, with more conviction and determination, of the spells she had used earlier and hoped that this time she would have better success than just making Mason's wand clatter to the floor. She aimed to make the wand soar in her directions so that it could be caught.

Mason couldn't help but feel a little bad as her spell hit Rachel. Sure it meant that for a brief second she was victorious, but it was also really disgusting as the possibly foul-smelling ooze shot out of her nose.
The Snake was ready this time for Expelliarmus. Rach was going to become predictable if she re-used spells so closely after the other. Mason knew that her friend didn't have a lot of previous experience with Duelling, but still. . .
She was trying the reserve her magic, so there was no point in trying to block each of her blows with a spell. So Mason did a quick Sidestep and dodged the disarming spell. She didn't have that much energy left, another thing she was going to have to watch out for.
Raising her wand once again, Mason pointed her wand at Rach and exclaimed, "Flippendo Duo!"
That was going to hurt.
It was a rather intense spell for her, seeing that she only had so much Magic that she could use. Hopefully her sacrifice was worth it. . . or else she was literally screwed.

Flipendo Duo: More powerful version of the knockback jinx◦
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Mason was fast. She dodged Rachel's spell and she couldn't help but feel a tad disappointed that her spell had missed its target. Oh no! Was that the Knockback Jinx? A more powerful version than usual, too? Rachel knew definitely that her feeble Shield Charm would not be able to stop this and so she followed Mason's previous move of moving away from the spell. She did this with a quick and neat dive to the floor so that the light of the spell sailed over her head.
Without climbing to her feet, the Eagle aimed her wand in her friend's direction. Hoping for better results this time, she threw two spells consecutively. First was the spell that caused persons to break out in boils, Furnunculus. It was followed up by the Hair-thickening Charm.

Despite the fact that the man had to remain neutral in these situations, he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride rushing through him as he watched Rachel duel. His mind went back to the Dueling Meeting and the fact that the girl had been the first one to be knocked out and yet, here she was: dueling away and ducking under a variety of spells.
Proud.
When the time was up, he put up a shield to stop Rachel's Furnunculus and Hair Thickening Charm from hitting Mason. "Well done, you two!" he called, stepping out of his spot and making his way towards the first years. All effects of any spells still in place were vanished before he continued, his eyes on Miss Stevens, "You're really good with your defensive strategy." Like, really. He was pretty certain that that was her strong point. "Well done on putting up a good fight but," He turned to Rachel. "Miss Watson takes the lead in this one. Congratulations!" Cue a proud smile.
