Ohhhhhhh he was nervous. Jaemin climbed up on the platform and fidgeted a little as he stood on his end, eyes fixed on his opponent. He knew her name was Haddie, but that was about as much as he could remember about her. He hadn't really talked to her at all before this. And now he was gonna have to throw spells at her.
Probably made it easier, that he didn't know her.
The small boy bowed to Haddie, smiling at her softly. "May the best person win!"
Hopefully it would be him. Cause he totally wanted to win. He considered Haddie for a long moment, nose scrunching up in concentration. He didn't know her, so he didn't know what kind of technique she was going to use... he'd have to feel it out. No big deal. At least she was small, like he was.
The small boy pointed his wand and let a Stinging Hex fly. Soft start.

Haddie Denaker took a deep breath. Nope, didn't help. She took another. And another. She was starting to get light-headed and the deep breaths weren't even helping. Though Haddie would never admit it, getting knocked out the first meeting had shaken her confidence.
She could do this, though. Right? She could? Haddie risked one last deep breath and glanced over at her opponent, a boy she only knew by name. Jay, or Jaymen or something like that. But at least he looked just as nervous as she did. Okay Denaker, you got this... The pep talk helped, but not by much She bowed nervously at Jaemin.
"Pro-prote--" The hesitation cost her. Jaemin's sting hex struck before she could cast the shield charm. Haddie winced as welts spread up her neck and face. She had suffered through worse, she tried to tell herself. She could block it out. And while that was sort of true, the stinging was a little too distracting. She would need to get rid of it, before she could properly cast any spell. Haddie aimed her wand at herself, "Finite!" Immediate relief.
Her turn now. Haddie leveled her wand at her opponent. "Everte Statum!"

His spell actually landed, and for half a moment Jaemin felt sooooooooo bad about it. It looked like it hurt a lot... he winced, and very nearly asked if she was okay, but then she was ending the hex and casting back at him. He had half a moment to tighten his fingers around his wand and he held up his hand to try and cast a shield, but... the spell hit him, and he went flying backwards. He yelped, landing on his butt on the platform and almost flopping onto his back.
Owwwww. That hurt! He was slightly less concerned about poor Haddie's face now. The small boy wrinkled his nose and cast again as he was standing, jabbing his wand hard at her. "Periculum!"

The boy didn't look too happy with her as he got back up. She shrugged her shoulders apologetically. It was a duel after all, they were supposed to b-- Yikes!
She raised her wand, bracing herself for the spell's effect as she did. "Protego!" Did it work? After a few seconds Haddie ventured a peek, and... the spell was gone. She did it! She successfully blocked the spell! "YES!!" The eagle literally jumped up and down a few times in excitement. SHE DID IT!
Then she suddenly remembered she was in a duel and leveled her wand back at Jaemin. And for her next trick, a special blast from her past... Haddie cast the Fur Spell. This spell had a special place in her heart, as she apparently cast it as a kid, before she had control over her magic, on a bully that was picking on her twin. That one had surprised even her.

Faaaaail. She'd managed to get a shield up and blocked his spell... which meant that she was going to attack back. Jaemin got into what he felt was a defensive stance; the spell wasn't what he expected, but he had to avoid it anyway. He didn't want to be furry!
"P-Protego!" he yelped, flinching away and hiding his face behind his arm just in case. The shield went up, however, and her spell deflected off of it with a soft cracking sound. Thank goodness, because while he was very into the idea of fuzzy creatures, he definitely didn't want to be one. He drew a shaky breath and fired back. "Colloshoo!"
Doing so many spells so quickly was a little hard.

Awww, he blocked it. Too bad, it would have been funny magic dueling a monkey boy! Jaemin cast his next spell a bit faster than Haddie anticipated and barely got her wand raised before the spell struck her. It stung a little where it hit her, but she seemed to be perfectly fine. Guess the spell was a dud then.
Oh, well. Way to waste a turn snaky boy! Haddie aimed her wand flourishing it while speaking the incantation. Purple Firecrackers burst from her wand, shooting off in the direction of her dueling partner. They were pretty. Partially because purple was her favorite color.

Yesssss. His spell hit this time! Though she didn't seem to disturbed by it... maybe it hadn't worked? It had to have worked... right? He wasn't that bad at magic... while he was busy worrying about that, she was casting again. He gasped and ducked, flinching as purple sparks went over his head. It was a good thing he was so small... he flicked a look up, biting his lip before popping back up as they subsided.
He liked purple, but he didn't need purple sparkles in his face.

"Protego!" Her heart was jackhammering her chest with that one. Oh yeah, she'd learned about that spell and was in no hurry to learn what slugs tasted like. Thank Merlin she was fast enough on that one, because no thank you. This time she did a bit more than block the spell. This time she deflected it back at Jaemin... hopefully. Serves him right Let's see how you'd like to vomit up slugs, buddy.
She ignored the tiredness she was starting to feel, so that she could quickly cast a second spell while he was dealing with his own slug-vomiting spell... hopefully. With a wave of her wand she sent a Jelly-Fingers Curse at the boy, hoping for a magical version of a one two punch or something. Though, she knew she wasn't as quick as she would have been at the start of this duel. Casting magic took a lot out of you and she was definitely starting to feel that. Especially after trying to quickly cast those two spells so close together. She wasn't sure she could keep this up much longer. Perhaps she should focus less on shield spells, and dodge a bit more? Seemed to work for him.

Close close close it was so close it was going to hit OH GOD IT WAS COMING BACK. Jaemin let out a yelp again and jerked to one side in a frenzied attempt to avoid it; his own spell went past him, but unfortunately the one she'd followed it up with didn't, and he felt his wand slipping a bit in his grip. Nooooooooo... the small Slytherin tried his best to squeeze his wand and pointed it at his fingers. Is this how it felt when old people tried to hold onto things?!
"Finite," he said, rather forcefully. He was getting really tired now... his steam was running out, and it seemed as if Haddie's was too. Jaemin tightened his fingers around his wand again, thankful for the grip that seemed to have returned for the most part, and put his whooooole body into the next spell he threw at the Ravenclaw girl. "Expelliarmus!"

Haddie sidestepped the incoming spell with a smirk. Only she didn't. Her feet remained firmly glued to the same spot and her smirk disintegrated into a look of sheer terror. If her wand is knocked out of reach, she'd done for. Plick! She felt the wand fly up out of her hand, almost in slow motion and she reached up after it, chasing and fumbling it with her hands all the way up.
It landed at her feet. Thank Merlin. But now she was all but drained. She wasn't even sure if she had enough energy to remove the spell on her feet and attack her opponent. Jaemin wasn't looking all that much better, so there was still a chance, right? Haddie made her choice. "Rictusempra!" She tried to put as much force behind it as she could, and surprised even herself by the strength of the spell she cast. But she wasn't going to get another spell like that again. Her head was already swimming from the effort. She wouldn't be able to prevent the next spell from hitting her, that much she knew. "Nothing too awful," she pleaded.

He was pretty sure he only had one more good spell in him, so when Haddie's wand landed at her feet and she immediately picked it back up, Jaemin had to swallow back on a whine. He had never done this many spells in such a small amount of time... it was hard. He drew a heavy breath and held up his wand defensively as she got her wand back in her grip.
He was so not up for tickling right now. As the jet of light flew toward him, he gathered together what felt like the last little bit of his strength and cast as strong a shield charm as he could muster. Her tickling charm reflected back off of it and shot toward her, which he almost wished he could take back a moment later because of how she reacted.
"S-sorry," he managed, biting his lip.

Haddie Denaker raised her wand, hoping beyond hope she had enough left in her to cast one more shield spell. "Protego!"Annnnnd nothing. She didn't have enough energy left to produce a shield.
With a small whimper her own spell struck her. It was like hundreds of feathery fingers dancing across her body. Haddie began to writhe and squirm under the tickling she was enduring, face red from the wide grin and uncontrollable, pure giggling that was bursting out of her. It did have one beneficial effect though. She was squirming so intensely that her feet slipped out of her shoes. Haddie fell backward, a wiggling, squirming mess of laughter rolling around and trying to contort herself in a futile attempt to escape the tickling torture she'd unwittingly subjected herself too. The duel was over.

Hirsch had been sitting towards a side of the arena, out of view of the limelight that was the actual duel itself. Of course, he was here to make sure no one got hurt too badly but boy, was it hard to remember that when such a good duel was taking place. And between two first years, nonetheless. Were people taking notes? Hm?
When the duel ended with a tickling charm on Miss Denaker - cute - the man struck up a magical shield between the two contestants and appeared from the shadows. Dramatics, you know. Couldn't miss that opportunity. When he was close enough, he cast a Finite Incatatem to take away the tickling spell that Mr Song had cast.
"Excellent, excellent spell casting! Both of you." Even if they both looked like they were getting tired towards the end of it. But, well, practice made perfect. "Congratulations on winning the duel, Mr Song." He earned himself a pat on the back from the Defence Professor, along with a proud smile. "And well done on putting up a good fight, Miss Denaker." Yep, smiles were happening.
Duels make him really happy, okay?
Oh, and, "Need a hand?" he asked, extending his own out.
It was a minute or two before Haddie recovered enough to get up. She just laid there on her back, catching her breath, occasionally letting out a giggle or two as the lingering sensation of having just been tickle attacked, by her own spell no less, faded away. Finally, Haddie reached up and took Hirsch's hand, letting him help her to her feet.
Despite losing, she was grinning ear to ear, and mostly had nothing to having just been tickled. It was hard to be disappointed in losing when she had held her own, and had fun. Jaemin had fought hard. So had she. And, did she mention having fun? Because she did. A lot of fun. Dusting herself off, Haddie took a moment to retrieve her now unglued shoes before making her way over to Jaemin, hand raised for a high five. "That was a lot of fun. Great job out there."
He had woooooooon. Jaemin's skin was already prickling with excitement about this, and he grinned brightly at the professor as the man came up and released Haddie from his spells. He would have totally done that, but it was better that the professor did it. Jaemin was really tired, and he probably couldn't have let her out of more than one at a time. Now she could have her shoes back on top of everything else.
"It was really great! You were a good opponent," he said softly, hi-fiving Haddie and bouncing happily. He immediately held onto her hand though so she couldn't go anywhere, and reached the other one to lightly touch her cheek. "Is your face okay? I didn't hurt you too much, did I?"
He didn't know how long the stinging hex could linger or hurt... he looked at the professor questioningly. She had finite'd it, but Jaemin had never actually been hit by a stinging hex before, so who knew if it still hurt after it was stopped?
Haddie sucked air through her teeth and pulled her head away as he touched it. Not because she felt it was rude or anything, but the area was still tender. Her face was still red from laughing so hard from Rictusempra, so it was hard to tell whether or not there was any left over redness from the stinging hex. "It's fine," she assured him. "Still kinda sore and all, but it stopped stinging as soon as I broke the spell. It'll be gone by tomorrow." She punctuated her words with a nod.
"You were a great opponent too. Smart thinking with that shoe sticking spell." She hadn't learned that one yet, which is why she thought it had been a dud. "I might have had you, if it weren't for that one." Haddie glanced around, before taking a seat. She was still fairly worn out from the duel, and it felt good to just sit and rest a moment. "It's nice to officially meet you, by the way." They had just dueled each other, and to Haddie it felt as if they had gotten to know each other pretty well in the short time they were throwing spells at each other. So, the time for official introductions was gone, and unneeded. But, still, it was the first time they really were having a conversation, so... yeah. It was nice to meet him, officially.
She turned and looked up at Professor Hirsch. "So what happens now? Does only the winner get to duel again?" She had a feeling it might be that way. Though, she hoped it wouldn't be. She had too much fun today to want it to be the end now. She turned back to Jaemin. "I'll cheer you on next duel... unless you're paired with Rachel or one of my good friends, then I kinda gotta cheer for them." Was cheering even allowed in duels?
Ohhh. Her reaction to his light touch had Jaemin worriedly biting down on his lip, and he drew his hand back immediately. Poor Haddie... at least she seemed sure that she would be okay. And the professor could probably fix it if it was necessary, right? Hirsch could do stuff like that. He was smart. He had the glasses to prove it.
"It's not too hard to learn! I can help you learn it, if you want." He moved to sit next to her, running a hand through his hair. He needed to recharge his little boy batteries after that duel, because Merlin that had been a workout. This must have been what people felt like after going to the gym. "It's nice to officially meet you too."
There were a lot of people Jaemin knew in passing, and Haddie had been one of them until today. It was easy to pick up names when professors and other students called them out in classes and the halls, but he was pretty sure that he hadn't actually met about 90% of the students properly just yet. That was okay though. He was working on it.
"I'm sure you'll get to duel again too..." he glanced at Hirsch again, because he would be the one to know. People had more than one chance in a tournament, right? At the very least they had to have two chances, so they could figure out who was gonna place where overall... he laughed a little when she mentioned cheering for him unless he dueled one of her friends, cheeks going round with a smile. "You can cheer for both of us! Just for me a little less."
"I got stung by a jelly fish once," Haddie told him. He still looked concerned about the stinging hex. "That hurt a lot worse." Of couse she was five at the time, so that might have skewed her perception of the pain a bit. And got rushed to the hospital, which had freaked her out and made it all seem worse. Still, she had had to deal with the stinging for a lot longer. She still had some faint scars on her left leg from that. But here, she had been able to stop the stinging with a word. Sure her skin was still protesting the fact it had been stung by feeling sore and tender, but... "I'll live." She was tough.
"Oh! Yeah, definitely! I'd like that." She grinned at Jaemin. This definitely was one of her more interesting ways of naking a new friend. "We can even practice and learn new spells together. Maybe even practice duel. Just...no slug puking spells, please." She shuddered at the thought of that. "I really want to learn the patronus charm... Hey, Professor Hirsch, can you show us how to cast a patronus?" That would be cool. If she got to come back next year, she was definitely going to practice it all year, until she got it.
Now why did she have to go spoil things by thinking about the fact she might not be back next year. Thankful Jaemin provided a distraction, and Haddie smiled up at Hirsch, hopeful that she'll have another duel. She was already running through what she'd do differently. Next duel she would definitely win. She hoped. Haddie nodded. "Yeah, I can do that. I'll cheer you both on. Man, I don't know about you but I'm tired now."
urine trouble | Pat's Strong Confident Other Half | Pees Like a Champion Unicorn Racehorse
Did the two need a moment or...?
Hirsch stood there, smiling as Mr Song went to congratulate Miss Denaker and the two seemed to, well, seemed to get along well. The man might as well not have been there to make sure that the two wouldn't break out in a fight but it seemed that that wasn't necessary, especially with that hand holding and the cheek touching that was going on. His eyes flickered between the two first years and he half wondered whether he needed to, uh, leave them to it. Surely he wasn't needed for something like this, right?
#awkward
So, the man did what anyone would do in this kind of situation: he just sort of stood there and cleared his throat. Yeah, hello, he was standing here as well.
Oh, and there was a question about duels. Perfect! Roderik let an amused expression cross his face before saying, "You really think I'd only let you duel once, Miss Denaker?" Really?! he shook his head before continuing, "You'll get more chances........ two more, I'd say. But you're more than welcome to come in here and practice if you wanted." That went for Mr Song too.
As for the Patronus question, he paused. It was nice, really, and he wasn't one to say no but he could already imagine the reaction he'd get out of the students if they didn't produce a Patronus anytime soon. Heartbreaking didn't even cover it. "I won't say no to that offer but it's very advanced magic." Meaning don't be put out if they don't produce a patronus in their twentieth try, okay?
Oh ew, jellyfish. Those things were gross. What purpose did they serve?! They were just floating grossbags that hurt people. Jaemin wrinkled his nose and shook his head a little, because ew.
"We can use other spells in other duels," he said with a grin, looking at the professor again. Why did his face look like that? He looked... weird. Was he okay? Did he need water?
Ohhhh the patronus charm! He wanted to learn that too. He smiled brightly when Hirsch said he would help them... it was more advanced magic, but he was GOOD at that, right? He'd managed the gravity spell, even though it wasn't super strong. He'd still done it. So he'd totally be able to do the patronus one too, at some point. It'd be like the bubble head one. He just had to practice and eventually his magic ability would catch up with the rest of him.
"I can already do stuff that I shouldn't be able to do yet," he pointed out to Hirsch, grinning. "If you show us how, I can make it work eventually!"
And he was so glad that Haddie was gonna get to duel again, too! He'd figured that was how tournaments worked, but who knew if magic tournaments were the same as regular tournaments. "I'll cheer for you during yours too! I hope you win next time."
Hirsch was watching them with a strange look on his face. Haddie's brow furrowed ever-so-slightly, questioningly. She was about to ask him 'what?' when he started answering them about them duels. Two more? YES! There was no hiding her excitement. "This is my first time dueling. I don't know how the tournaments work." For all she knew it could have been one and done. But yes! She had more chances. "I plan on winning," she told Jaemin, grinning. "I hope you win too."
Uh-oh, Hirsch was hesitating about the patronus charm. Not another Professor saying no because they were first years. Just give them a chance. Haddie was about to argue she could handle learning the charm when... he wasn't going to say no? See this, this right there was why Hirsch was one of her favorite professors. If only she could get Ichihara to be like that. She nodded, enthusiastically. "I know, Professor. I understand it might take a long time and that many never cast a corporeal patronus. I will though. Even if it takes me years." It might too. Just like becoming an Animagus. She was ready for that. "I'll work at it as long as it takes! Thank you Professor!"
