Welcome to your first duel!

This is a key stepping stone into determining your placement in the Jinx Tournament so please take this seriously. A list of spells to use can be found HERE while the cost of physical actions can be found below.

Please note that these actions take away from the Fatigue Points section. Also note that these are only taken into account if you're attacking or avoiding a spell. If you're simply moving around the hall, these points don't need to be considered.

A referee (either Professor Airey or Professor Hirsch) will be present to oversee the duels and will only interfere if the duel ends or any foul play or unsportsmanship-like behaviour is displayed.

Please remember to adhere to the Dueling Club rules, the DADA rules as well as the SS Site rules.

OOC: This duel must be completed by the 24th of February by 11:59pm GMT. You're required to make a minimum of 3 posts each in that time.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate in contacting me about them or posting them in the Dueling Club Rules thread. If you don't think you can post during that time or you don't think you can start/finish your duel, please let me know as soon as possible and we'll try and work something out.

Remember to keep a track of your points both in the title of your post (before any spells have been cast) and at the end of the post (after your charrie has cast a spell). Please refer to this post if you're confused as to how this works or, simply, come to me. Include as much information as you can about the spell in the spoiler section at the bottom of your post, including the directionality of the spell.

Also remember to be as realistic as possible with your charrie's age and ability.

First person mentioned in the thread title is the first person to start off the duel.

Chloe didn't think she would actually have to duel in this club. She was only here because it was a guarantee that Hirsch would be. Now, all of the sudden, she was being flung into a much less agreeable arrangement. Dueling in Dueling Club. The absurdity, the rudeness, the anxeity-inducing mess. The thirteen year old was barely beginning to learn to properly duel in her lessons. She was a second year, not the product of some old school rogue Dumbledore's army. Or Bastien. Defense spells were hard.

Tucking some stray blonde strands behind her ear, Chloe sized up her opponent. Was he as terrified and unprepared as she was? Was he also here to just stare at Hirsch? If that was the case she was hoping that they could forfeit together and just oogle the professor. Everything else made her heart hammer in anxiousness.

She awkwardly drew her wand and waited.

They still had time to back out of this, if he wanted. She couldn't remember if Blaise was the reasonable Gryffindor type or not. Scratch that. None of them were reasonable. This was going to happen. No matter how much she wanted it not to.......

Why did his mother keep doing this sort of thing to him? He didn't remember signing up for dueling club--in fact, he'd learned his lesson last term. You couldn't be in the club unless you were willing to duel. He was not willing to duel but somehow his name was still on the roster and his mother was still expecting a report on the duel. Did she expect progress? Did she expect a win? The only time that had ever happened it was because he was a fast ducker and runner. How long would that work on his side?

And as if in perfectly horrid taste, he would have to duel another girl. Losing to one the first time was bad enough. How much of this humiliation would he have to face? He couldn't DO this.

Blaise wasn't that kid that lied to himself and filled his own head with ideas of grandeur--not when it came to magic. This wouldn't end well. Having bowed and turned his back, the 12 year old didn't see his opponent standing there as he counted out his ten steps. It was only when he turned that he saw her just standing there with her wand raised.

The boy paused, unsure what to make of it. If it turned out she knew nonverbals, he was LEAVING. For right now, he just sorta...half raised his wand and stared back.

There was an etiquette to dueling that Chloe, obviously, was unaware of. She just held her wand up and looked around for someonne to help her. Chloe managed a glance in Blaise's direction and called out across to him, "Should YOU start or should I?"

Chloe didn't know what she needed to do next. Hopefully Blaise did. If not, it would be grounds to forfeit which she was a possibility that she was more pleased about then she should have been. This was horrible. She did not have a defense bone in her body.

Before she could wait for his response a huge bang went off in the room. A nearby duel was obviously in the MIDDLE of it. Chloe squealed, pointed her wand at Blaise and shouted startled, "Ventus!"

A HUGE gust of wind blew from her wand. So much that it startled her backward. She stumbled backward and nearly fell.

Should he start? That was a good question. One who's obvious answer was NO. He wasn't going to start; he wasn't going to do anything. Left up to him, the two would stand there until a Professor came and made them do otherwise and even then, Blaise would stand there until given a reason to move--like this. THIS would make him move.

Just when the Second Year was beginning to panic about Chloe knowing non-verbals and his goose being cooked, she yelled a spell and out of nothing but raw reflex, the boy took a dive that saw him landing flopped on his belly. The breeze against his legs told him he'd only just barely escaped what might have otherwise been an unpleasant blast of wind.

Only one thing to say at a time like this. "Oww...." You'd think that after a year of living life on the edge like this, the boy would have perfected his dive but no it was always different. The spells he dodged weren't always the same. There was no way of anticipating it and it made him resent this whole practice all the more. Why did people have to duel? Why did they need magic? This was stupid.

Blaise pulled himself onto his elbows, still trying to catch his bearings. It was then that he realized Chloe herself had been taken aback by her own blast. No time like the present. If this worked, at least he'd have a wider area for running--if it didn't as was the case 99% of the time he cast, he'd just look like an idiot again. No big deal.

"Colloshoo!" He yelled, taking aim at her steadying feet. If there was ever a time to work wand...it would be now....JUST saying.

Chloe was not really prepared, like at all, for this duel. In her mind this club served one purpose and it was to be near/around Hirsch. And so this duel only served to peak her anxiety levels and make her feel silly. She didn't like being made to look dumb.

BUT, because she was so preoccupied, she wasn't doing very well...at anything. Including casting her own spells.

The sheer force of wind from her spell blew her back and then, as she was uneven in her footing, she stumbled into Blaise's next spell.

Stumbling, stumbling, stumbling until she was stuck. Her shoes to the ground. And she could not stop the momentum of her previous stumbling so she fell. With her feet stuck to the ground. Which meant she landed in a weird direction. Which led to her slipping out of her shoes but falling flat on her face.

With no finesse, no real motivation, she lifted her wand from the floor and shot purple firecrackers from her wand. She couldn't tell if her spell landed her target. But she was going to stay on the floor now and die of embarrassment, okay?

From his rather uncomfortable spot on the floor, Blaise watched Chloe stumbling further and further under the back blast of her own spells. That--THAT was why he didn't attempt super powerful spells that his wand would botch up. He wouldn't stagger backward, he would be DEAD and his wand would finally WIN at its game of trying to get him killed.

There was nothing but concern as he watched her topple over and fall out of her shoes. In fact, it took him a couple seconds of staring to realize it meant his spell must have worked. It...actually....her shoes were...his wand.....

No freakin' way...

Before he could properly process this fact--one he wasn't certain he was happy about or apathetic--there were firecrackers racing toward him garnering something like a manly!squeak as his hands rushed to protect his head.

Blaise lay perfectly still, wondering if he'd gotten knocked unconscious like he had with Char but he couldn't have...because he could still hear everyone around him. He was still in the dueling arena and the Professor still hadn't called the duel. WHAT WAS HE WAITING FOR??? Why did he have to keep casting?? Just how many lucky shots did they think he was get with his wand??? Possibly the most important thing, WHY wasn't Chloe getting up?

"Aguamenti." That...woke people up...yeah?

There was a point, particularly towards the end of the duel, when Hirsch was seriously considering ending the duel right then and there, regardless of how much time had passed. It had nothing to do with his need for coffee and food -- oh, how coffee would be nice right now -- but it had everything to do with the fact that Mr Bellaire was......... was he unconscious?? And why was Miss Newman still on the floor? Was she hurt? Please don't let that be the case. Merlin only knows how the Healer would react to this.

His eyebrows furrowed, he almost took a step out of the spot he was standing in when the boy seemed to start moving. Oh. Okay. He'll just, cough, step back into the place he was standing in and pretend that nothing had hap--

Or not.

When the time went up, so did the magical shield, which stopped the water spell from hitting Miss Newman. He didn't say anything until he was pretty close to the two duelists and he looked over them carefully. "Are you two..... okay?" They hadn't cast ridiculously powerful spells but the force was something. Definitely something.

And the result? Clearing his throat, he took away any lasting effects of the spells that had been cast and started, "That was an intense duel, well done." Also, don't be hurt, okay? "Well done on putting up a good fight, Mr Bellaire, but......" His eyes landed on Miss Newman and he smiled. "Congratulations on getting your win, Miss Newman."

Did they need help getting up?
