Default The Portraits

The first floor is full of portraits who would gladly lend an ear if you wish to tell of your woes. Most would be even more glad to talk your ear off about themselves if you're more of a listener... be wary of them, though. The ones at the top are still very dusty and they are NOT happy about it.

OOC: We do have someone who RPs the portraits, actually, so....

Taking a walk Cassie had found herself in front of the portraits. It was somewhere she hadn't been in awhile, but somewhere she use to spend a lot of time. As a child she would spend time under them doing her homework. Looking up she smiled at the faces smiling back at her. "Hello" she just said in passing.

Turning she sat down on the floor under the portraits, it was like old times. A comfort she was needing as she opened her new diary. As she began writing she couldn't help but smile. Leo really did know what she needed, the diary was perfect.

Feeling a nudge at her arm she looked over to Gemini's head out of the purse and nudging at her arm for attention. "Okay, okay" She pulled him out to her lap and began petting him. "Is that better?" she chuckled and nuzzled the cat's head.

His office was starting to get stuffy. Or perhaps closed in. Or maybe it was just age catching up and giving him restless legs. Whatever the case, no amount of window-opening, charming or room-pacing had been satisfactory and so, for the fourth time that day, Sabel was headed out and towards the grounds.

Where to exactly, he wasn't sure. Perhaps a long walk around the lake. Or a patrol around the forbidden forest. Something to keep his mind and body active and away from restless thoughts and emotions. Something to keep him occupied until he had a mind to sit back down again and review more homework, or plan his next lesson.

He was a hallway away from the fresh fall air, when a figure in the corner of his vision caught his attention. It wasn't so much the person, as their location and their stance within the hall. Or rather, the non-stance. In all his years at Hogwarts, he couldn't ever remember a Professor sitting below the portraits.

To him, that struck off a warning flag. And to him, warning flags were invitations for conversations. At least, this type of warning flag was.

Tucking his hands in his pockets, Sabel paused a few feet away, a small smile touching his lips at the sight of the cat popping out from Cassie's purse. "Where can I get myself such a good travelling companion?"

As she started to work in her new diary and write a few things down she was very aware there were footsteps coming towards her. She could hear them, but sense her cats getting aware of the soon to be person in the same area as they were. Hearing the voice she lifted her head with a small smile. "Well I can introduce you to a great rescue that has many of these adorable little companions. These two are just extra special, I started them young in their traveling purse so they love it." From day one they had never left her side. They were her fur babies and she was going to make sure they stayed safe.

"What brings you out into the corridor?" She knew she was down at his end of the castle, but she could still ask what he was up to. "How is the Defense against the dark arts going?" Not one to ever feel like that was her strong point, Cassie even surprised herself last term out in the woods. She had been a lot more braver then she ever thought possible.

Hearing something behind her she looked up at the portraits, "I use to come here often as a student and sit to do homework. They were always such good company." He waited for a look of that was weird, but just as when she was a child she didn't care if he thought that, it was a nice little place to sit and think.

Chuckling, Sabel moved over and braced his back against the wall. Slidding down it, he folded his legs and sat beside Cassie and her bag of travelling companions. "The wife would disown me. We've already got two dogs and two kids to match." A grin stole across his expression as the second cat of the cats poked his head out of the bag and began nosing the air. "As much as I would like another cat, I'm afraid I'll have to decline."

Scratching the cat on the head with a finger, Sabel spared a glance up at the other professor. "Was just going to go on a .... uh ...." Patrols didn't really exist in Hogwarts, did they? "Walk-about." As for the classes, that got a small chuckle. "No one's taken a trip to the healer yet, so there's that I suppose. How about on your end?"

Divination was never something he had really understood as a kid. Or as an adult, now that he thought about it, but according to the wizarding community and Hogwarts inclusive, it was a basis of magic. He didn't doubt there was some merit to it, having been in classes with a Seer, but the plain fact was that it eluded him.

Tilting his head back, Sabel considered the multiple frames hanging above them. "They always unnerved me, to be honest. Had never seen a moving picture before coming to Hogwarts, not to mention one that was technically....sentient." Still unnerved him. It was still weird.

A mischievous smile pricked the corner of his lips. "Did they ever help you with your homework?"

The part of marriage that Cassie had heard about and she used to be glad she wasn't married. Not being allowed to get a cat that was just an awful thought. She pet her fur babies on the head. She had to admit to herself that she had been having marriage thoughts creep in lately, but she wouldn't stop and think too much into them. "Well maybe if she saw a sweet little face she would change her mind. Mother instinct would jump in if the kitty was small enough." It was just a thought, but maybe it could work.

"Oh is it your turn?" She knew her schedule of when she had to walk the corridors, but she couldn't remember everyone's. "I always enjoy my walks around the castle. It's so fun to see all the students." As long as they were doing what they were suppose to, but usually they were. "It's been pretty quiet which has been kind of nice I guess. The students all seem happy so far."

She glanced up again as he seemed a little nervous, "They don't bite. Most of them like the company. They enjoy seeing the students and staff. Do you know we as staff really don't pay attention to them as much as the students. It's pretty sad really." She knew she neglected the portraits, but that was going to change this year. She knew how it felt and she didn't want others to feel that way. Her chuckles soon formed as he asked about homework, "Yes some of them did. I was never good at Runes and Arithmancy so I would seek help from them."

Sabel laughed, shaking his head at the innocent and sincere suggestion of his colleague. "If only. Afraid all her motherly instincts are already tied up and we've got enough sweet little faces motoring about the house." Two kids, both growing faster than bean sprouts. It was amazing, terrifying and saddening all in one fell swoop.

Drawing up one knee, Sabel hooked his wrists around it and glanced down at the cat still currently in the Professor's purse. "Turn?" Was there such a thing? He shook his head, hooking one finger over the edge of the bag and, using it as a makeshift 'string', moved it around the rim. Watching the cat's eyes go wide as saucers made him grin. "More force of habit. I'm not able to sit in one place for too long."

He spared a glance up at Cassie, nodding along in understanding, especially about the quiet nature of the school. "It's almost eerie, but hopefully it lasts. We could do without a year of utter turmoil." Not that he was really expecting a lack of it. This was Hogwarts after all.

And the portraits didn't bite? Sabel glanced up at her in a mixture of surprise and amusement. Her cat, on the other hand did, and chose that moment to take a good hold of his teasing finger. His startled yelp turned into a chuckle, as he pulled his finger free and scratched the cat's head. "Good to know. Can't say I ever really considered that they might, which was, on hindsight, rather foolish."

Tilting his head back, Sabel considered the portraits. "Helpful bunch. Though, I have to admit I don't really know a lot about them." Proving her point of not paying as much attention to them as the students. "Never been able to figure out if they're sentient or...charmed."

The last word was offered in a lower voice. Merlin forbid one of the portraits hear it and take offense.

Awwwwwww, he was talking about his children and Cassie couldn't help but think about cute little ones running around at home. "How old are your children?" Not something she was close to at all, but she did know parents could be so adorable when they spoke of their children.

She chuckled, "They might look sweet, but they do have claws that might get you doing that." Her cats loved to play and by the looks of their faces it wasn't going to be long before they were bouncing out of the purse onto him. "Nessa use to play like that with them. They miss her around here." She missed her best friend too, but knew the cats were attached to her since they had lived together for a few years.

"Oh, yes I could see how you can't sit still. I do enjoy my walks around the castle." A giggle left her lips as she watched Gemini do exactly as she warned. "Yes, it is a scary quiet."

Looking up at the portraits she smiled, 'They all have so much history. You really should take the time to get to know them." She had listened to the stories many times over the years. "Oh I remember reading about that. It's in the paint. I think." She couldn't remember all of the sudden exactly what it was.

"Sabel do you think I'm too soft?" She truly had never been mean and not sure if she really knew how, but maybe being too soft and too positive is why she was looked over. She had to ask someone and Sabel seemed to be an honest person.

Normally, he liked to keep his adorableness contained to his home. With his kids, wife and dogs. Being adorable wasn't really a saving grace for an Auror, or helpful as a Professor. Except, with this topic at hand, there may have been a bit of adorableness sneaking through. Truth was, that he couldn't get but a bit excited, and that little twinkle in his eyes, when it came to his kids. Especially on the good days of parenting.

"Just over five, and two." He shook his head in wonder. Really, it felt like the day prior that Lucas had just been born, and Emma still a toddler. "My daughter's right trouble in the making." In the best way possible.

And that's when he realized that he was sort of gloating over his kids, and probably looking all sorts of soft. Clearing his throat, Sabel focused his attention on the cats, not at all fussed when the one started to play in earnest. If his finger had been an encouragement for play, then the cat's sudden excitement was even more encouragement for him to keep doing so.

"I don't mind at all. Had a cat when I was growing up, and he gave me quite the love marks on regular occasion." He glanced up at the Professor, a small smile of empathy coming forth before his attention returned to the cats. "I'm sure they'll adjust. And there's always visits."

Wasn't like the lady was gone for good right? That....was harder to work around. And that thought alone had the smile slipping away almost instantly.

Get to know the portraits? Sabel's mouth twitched into a frown. He supposed they might be an interesting source of information, having seen so much over the years. Still, they were portraits, and his time seemed better spent with people. Students in particular. The fact that they sounded like they were not sentient didn't help his sentiment. Still, he spared the paintings a considering glance before shrugging his shoulders. "Maybe if I've got insomnia I'll come down this way."

And then there was that question. That question that seemed to come out of no-where and at the same time made all the sense in the world. His gaze went to Cassie, considering her for a long moment and waiting to see if there was anything she would follow the question up with. A statement or explanation perhaps, but it seemed that the question was just that, a question.

"Depends on what you define as too soft. For some people, it would be as simple as cracking a smile. For others, it would be a nice word, or having a heart-to-heart. For yet others, it might be helping them with things. For others it's bending over backwards." Did she see what he was saying? "Don't listen too much to the judgement of the world, Cassie. Frankly, they're not worth your time. Be as soft as you want to, as you feel is right."

He shrugged, hoisting the playful kitten into his lap and giving it a belly-attack, which it responded with tiny bites and kicking back teeth. "Goodness knows, we could use more softness in the world."

Aww how sweet, children were just adorable. "I bet you miss them when you are here. I'm not sure how you all do it. Have a family and work here for part of the year. I always feel lucky Leo is here to have dinner with or speak to." She knew there were many of them with families at home, but she just couldn't think that she could do it. "No child is trouble, they just are playful." She grinned never believing he'd have a child that was trouble.

"Yes they will adjust and we will be having some girl weekends soon so they will get to see her." Still it was weird having that office empty, er well not exactly empty but not exactly full either. She frowned, though her smile came back as he played with the cat.

"They are very interesting if you do have trouble sleeping. The stories that they can tell about their lives and the lives of others that have walked these corridors." She loved listening to them and some would help her find out if she needed to find a student needing some help.

She took in his words and sat quietly for sometime all her doubts that had started over summer coming back in her head. She knew Leo said the same thing, but as much as she wanted to believe him love was blind at times and she couldn't help thinking that might have been the case with his words. "Thank you Sabel that means a lot to me to hear." She hugged him in a gracious notion. "Some of the changes just had me thinking, but I should use those thoughts on students more than myself. I am not usually this selfish with my mind." She didn't like to be consumed with negative thoughts and she would start working harder to get rid of those.

"I do. But Truebridge and Botros were kind enough to let me make some...adjustments to my contract in regards to leaving the castle during the year." Adjustments, which made it possible for him to stay. And which he was incredibly grateful for.

As for no child being trouble, he gave Cassie a knowing smile about that one. He wouldn't argue the point, but trouble did exist and he didn't entirely mind. Not at this age anyways.

"That will be good. For the both of you." He was glad that she wouldn't be completely missing or loosing her friend. That, would be a very unfortunate circumstance.

Just like talking to sentient but non-sentient portraits during a bought of insomnia. Sabel couldn't help the scrunch up to his face. "I think I'll just take your word on that one." He had enough trouble with his own mind when he wasn't sleeping, that he didn't need another person's mind thrown in. Not to mention if that mind was a picture's mind. He tilted his head back, looking up at the frames. "No offense, of course, chaps."

With a smile, Sabel returned the hug. "Glad to be of some help." With care, he returned the cat that was in his lap, and none too pleased with being sandwiched, back to Cassie's purse. "But...it's not being selfish to evaluate yourself, or where you fit in the grand scheme of things. As much as it is good to focus on others, sometimes you need a bit of that for yourself too. I believe it's called self-care."
