quill Staff Dais

banner by Alec Summers (hermionesclone)

The school staff take their meals at a long table on a raised dais at the back of the Great Hall. The usual Hogwarts crest hanging behind them has returned, fully restored and looking brand new. The staff are also happily using the school's real silver silverware and heavy plates and goblets as they dine.

You may approach them for conversation, but they deserve a peaceful meal as much as anyone else.

Coffee. He needed coffee. Desperately.

If he didn't get it, it was going to be a terrible, awful, no good day. Of that he was positive. It had already been that type of a night, so a day without that little bit of fresh air would be horrid.

It was for that reason, that Sabel had left the confines of his office in the wee hours of the morning and ambled down to the great hall. He accessed the staff dias through the small door near the table, and upon seeing no one there yet, he took up his own seat. A bit lonely, especially with the hall so quiet early in the morning, but that meant less questions.

And the freshest pick of the coffee. The house elves were good, that was for sure. He'd have to remember to leave them a gift of some sort.

Pouring himself a cup, Sabel settled back and unfolded the Prophet he had tucked under his arm. He loathed the thing, but at the same time it was a bit of a necessity if one wanted to avoid being blindsided.

Mornings.. why did they exist? Justin didn't need to know this at the time the sun greeted him. Goodness, he forgot how bright it was over in these parts.

But then he remembered where he was waking up at. The school where he didn't have to put much effort in making his own breakfast. Now he was up. Humming a little he went to sit at his chair before looking around and..... well this was awkward. Nearly empty table. Nearly. Since there was only one Professor aallllllllllllllllllll the way over on the other side.

It was too quiet in here. Waay too quiet. Justin could respect quiet. Order didn't really happen without it at some point, and look at how much he accomplished by doing so. But that usually led to boredness, which led to not fun things or thoughts. So he moved his rump to occupy the next closest seat (Headmaster) one spot over.

Whoa. His eyes from the beginning feast did not fool him with how comfy this seat was looking. His tush was happy with the thought. Headmaster McLeod. Justin could see it now. Super comfy and self-heated seating that overlooked the whole school. He nearly grinned at the perks. The Headmaster seemed alright with him, buuut he was not going to risk his chances of secretly taking over his fun being stopped without his own calling. So he moved to the next seat. Cassie wouldn't mind, right? She was a sweet one. She'll understand. That's what Hufflepuffs were great at.

Despite being right next to the Professor, he gave off vibes that said he wasn't one to disturb. Pssh, like that mattered to Justin as he casually leaned in close to peer over his shoulder. It was quiet, so why not play along with it.

"What're you reading?" Justin whispered to the Darkest man.

There was one little problem with the man's question. And the problem was this. When one had been an Auror for near a decade, little side movements, like seat-hopping and squirming, didn't go unnoticed. In fact, the repteative ones got rather irritating. And at this time in the morning, with only a quarter cup of coffee in him, the groundskeeper's antics were just that. Distracting and a bit nerve-biting.

So, how much exactly had he read of the newspaper? Maybe about two words. One between each seat that was occupied. Merlin, he hadn't seen anyone move down a table like that since he sat with the Gryffindor's. It did make him check to see that it was indeed the groundskeeper and not some daring student.

Of course, checking had him face-to-face with the barrier-breaching man. Sabel had half a mind to snap the paper up between them, with the big bold letters 'Daily Prophet' to prove his point. As it was he only managed a quirked frown as he drew back a little into his seat. The coffee came with him.

"Catching up on the latest news." No need to be uncivil. Merlin knew the groundskeepers at Hogwarts held a fragile position. There was no telling how long before this one went missing. Hopefully a long time. Or at least, upon current assessment, he could convince himself he was hoping for a long time.

Shifting the paper about, Sabel offered it to the man. If he wanted to read, and was that curious, he'd prefer that the bloke do it in his own space, and not over his shoulder.

There was one thing that Justin did notice. This man was a little reserved. It was funny, though how some of the guys he met recently were giving off that sort of air. Typically that was the universal code for one to respect their space, right? Not for the Groundskeeper as he maintained the close proximity without giving his cues a thought as he scooted the chair over some.

Smiling, "Yeeaaaaah? Anything interesting?" Although Justin could read, there was typically only a few tibits of attractive articles to each person. And that required some searching. So why bother looking when he can just ask the guy who supposedly had already read it based off how he seemed to be willing to give it up now? That was Justin's logic right there as he made no signs of taking it.

Instead his hand reached out for some of the toast and pancakes to stack on his plate. "Want one?" They looked mighty tasty.

It took all the willpower within him not to shuffle his chair away from the guy that insisted on sticking near. Nearer, rather. Really, what was it with some people and personal space? It wasn't a hard concept to grasp.

At least the man had manners, and didn't stink of sweat or manure. Bonuses that could breed tolerance. So, he focused on those as he folded up the newspaper. "Nothing of particular note, yet. And no thank you."

Just in case that meant 'please stack them high' to the man, Sabel placed the paper on his plate and fixed the groundskeeper with a curious look. "So how'd they convince you to take on the supposedly cursed position?"

So, it was a dull news day. Check. Justin eyed at what he put instead on his plate. "Now that's a whole meaning to enjoying paper with a coffee." Did he really eat paper after reading it? He looking to be a straaange man to Justin, who couldn't help smirking. That had to be some secret to hold.

He blinked though at the question. Hmm... yes.. from what he heard the last seven Groundskeepers only stayed for no more than two consecutive terms. That did explain the same question and concerns he got. To tell the truth, there were indeed a number of benefits for him accepting it. The money, the supposed Soul protection and all that jazz. But hey, that was expected for him, right?

"Well, it's Hogwarts for one. The danger never surprised me after my time here back then in the 60's." Well, there goes his age. "My last work was fun and all, but I saw more to offer here with all the secrets this school has always had. Botros helped remind me of that." Now then, "How about you? What helped you come back to this supposedly cursed school?" Was he going to give some stupid noble reason? Justin couldn't wait to hear this as he casually added more pancakes to his stack.

And while he was waiting for an explanation on why such an upity guy was taking such a downer position, Sabel went to take another sip of his coffee. Except, that it nearly came right back out his nose. Paper with his coffee?!

Sputtering a bit, Sabel pounded a fist against his chest as he cleared his airway. "Merlin." Was this guy for real?

More importantly, where had Botros found him? Now that was a question that was worth asking.

The answer that he did finally get, after what seemed to be an appraising moment, had Sabel relieved he didn't try for another drink. He would make a mental note not to be in-taking any sort of food or beverage around this man. His choice of words were rather unpredictable.

Still, he did raise his mug in a sort of toast. "Keeping the good looks, I see." For a man in his forties, he really didn't appear to be that old. In fact, Sabel would have placed him closer to his own age. But apparently not. He was, apparently, still one of the babies of the faculty.

Age however, didn't seem to transcend the impact that Hogwarts had. A small, knowing smile touched Sabel's lips as he nodded. It was a good answer. One that he could find no fault or skepticism in. Though, he was curious as to which secrets the man was referring to. Hogwarts had always been a place of wonder and danger, but secrets?

The man got a curious look for that, as well as for how many pancakes he seemed convinced he could fit into his stomach. "My last job was a mortal catastrophe waiting to happen. I figured I'd try my luck with Hogwarts, maybe teach some kids how to not die in the process."

The guy was choking! Did he think he was joking? Oops. Justin probably shouldn't laugh, but he did a little. He had looked so flustered, "Ahahaha, whoaaa there." While laughing he moved in even closer to pat his back roughly. "You alright, mate?" Maybe he didn't like people pointing out that he enjoyed eating paper. He was currently a mystery to Justin, and everyone who knew Justin knew that there were no mysteries allowed around him for long.

He seemed to be after a moment, when his seemingly stiff composure was back. Justin had to blink some more. Keeping the good looks. What? were all the past Groundskeepers good-looking or was it... Ah. Ahaha. Justin grinned. "Why... yes. It runs in the family." His blue-grey eyes scanned his hands after that comment. Oh good, he wasn't hitting on him from the bling on one of his index fingers... or was he? It would explain the same distant vibes that Justin was blatantly ignoring, but he could just be really shy and private. Either way, the mystery was eating up the thirty-eight year old as his smirk deepened.

So now with that question he could unravel some mystery from this man. "Oh yeah? What did your last job consist of?" There were a number of jobs that fit that sort of description. Heck, even his last job risked that, depending on what day it had been.

Where was it written, that patting someone's back was conducive to them trying to pound their chest? It seemed counter productive. Still, he supposed that back-pounding was preferable to the man joining in on the chest pounding. Merlin knew the guy's ever closer proximity was already tripping his ex-Auror paranoia.

Lesson learned though. No inhalation of drink or food around this guy, given the man's peculiar mannerisms. Sabel didn't miss the brief search of his eyes, though he wasn't entirely sure what he was looking for. It had him scanning the table too, his gaze latching on the cutlery in front of him. With one finger, he pushed the fork over to the man. Maybe he was used to reverse place-settings? Who really knew at this point in time.

One thing was for certain, the company was hardly dull. The small smile that had started on Sabel's lips grew a little, and he cast the man a sidelong glance. "Knocking heads together." And he had to admit, he was equally curious. "What about yours?"

One thing was for certain with Justin as soon as he saw that little smile. Yes, he saw it. He may not be the best at reading people, as enough for proclaim, but he knew that little itty bitty hint of a smile gave one signal to him. Do not back off. So he didn't, instead the arm moved from patting his back - now that he wasn't choking anymore - over to his shoulder in an almost side hug as he gripped it. They were buddies now. No turning back.

"What?" He asked laughingly, "Like a muggle boxer?" Come onnn, secrets were no longer necessary when they were buddies. Unless that was true, and if so well he can't let this guy go away in the chance a fight was to arrive.

Weell then, since this guy needed a little lesson on opening up. "Sabby, right?" Of course he knew it was Sabel, but the more conversation going the better. Not waiting for any correction what so ever, "Well Sabby, I was with the Quibbler." Oh yes, that wonderful news article. "I took photographs for them, mainly with exotic creatures in the weirdest areas, but also helping cover some events and sports stars. Did a lot of travelling and time outdoors." Not bad, eh? Justin didn't think so either.

So he didn't, instead the arm moved from patting his back - now that he wasn't choking anymore - over to his shoulder in an almost side hug as he gripped it. They were buddies now. No turning back.

Alright, so the back-patting he could handle. It was an effort to be nice, to help. An almost automatic reaction when someone was choking. Fine.

This, however, arm-slinging-buddy-buddy-closeness was simply out of bounds. Where, in the man's lopsided brain, did he decide that this was a good idea? Merlin, they'd been talking for less than five minutes and already he was going to have to address boundary issues? It seemed this guy was just one of those people who didn't understand the social conduct of personal space.

Rather than blatantly address it, as he so wanted to do by prying each and every finger off his shoulder, Sabel made a gesture to the man's plate. "Your pancakes are getting cold." Hopefully he didn't like cold food too. That would just be the icing on the cake.

And in case that didn't work, option two was fully available. As much as he was reluctant to say exactly what it was he had done, he was sure the man would find out soon enough. It wasn't like it was a secret around Hogwarts or anything, and maybe it would give him a new perspective on being so buddy-buddy. "Like an ex-Auror."

No sooner was that out in the open, than he had been given a pet name and then the second shoe fell immediately after. Sabel blinked at the groundskeeper for a moment, turning completely deadpan. "You were a reporter."

Why did he always end up in these situations?

Why did he always end up in these situations?

One thing that Justin was proud of, was on his choices of friends. Seriously, who would be so thoughtful to even think about his food. "Oh, your right. Thanks mate." Gripping the shoulder again, he pulled him into a squeezing side-hug in thanks before patting said shoulder. Before he could get his fork though, "You should get on that paper before it gets.. " Wait. Did paper even change in temperature out in the open? He merely glanced before noting the coffee cup perspiration nearby. "..wet." Yeah. Still kind of weird that the man ate paper, but WHATEVER.

The arm was slipping away when he felt a notable temperature change from Sabel.. Huh. He felt a little chilly. ".Are you alright?" Did he need to see CeCe? "I think you could do with some real food." So with his other hand he stabbed in a few pancake slices before waving it a little in front of Sabel. "It's mighty deliciouss." Wide grin before he ate it himself. Okay, okay he'll share his portions, but physically feeding? That was not likely to happen today as he laughed after.

Aside from that, he finally found out what his previous occupation was. "No kidding? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, no one better to teach DADA than the one who had it as his actual profession. How long did you serve as one?"

You were a reporter. Puffing his chest out a little, "'Were' is right. I was a Photographer first and foremost, but now that's a side-hobby again." Hm. What was with that look? This one didn't smile much, did he? Justin guessed he would have to fix that as he continued grinning.

Apparently, it was too much to ask for a quiet, private morning without any hugging, spoon-feeding or nicknames. Sabel was in the process of making a mental note to take his breakfast earlier, and perhaps in the kitchen, when Mr. Pancakes was giving him a side-hug. He pat-pat-patted the man's hand, and may have tried to subtly pry and push off a few fingers, as he gave a grunt of acknowledgement.

A grunt that turned into something of disbelief. Did the man seriously think he ate paper for breakfast? A side-eye told him that yes, yes indeed he did.

And this was where better judgement failed. Well, it really came with the plane-pancakes, a trick he used on his own kids. It made him question the entire basis of sanity for this breakfast conversion, and abruptly decide that it didn't exist or it was disintegrating at a very quick half-life. If he finished it, maybe the man would find reason to excuse himself.

"Feeling just fine, thank you."

Without missing a beat, Sabel waved off the offer of the pancakes, picked up his coffee, ripped off an edge of the paper and casually plopped it in his mouth and started chewing. A swing of coffee followed, more to wash down the inky taste than for show. Interesting enough, wizarding newspaper didn't taste much different from muggle paper.

Swallowing, Sabel shrugged one shoulder at the comment about his career. "Well near enough a decade. If you count the YATI program." Which, Damien would argue didn't count, but given the instances that occurred during those three years, he was counting it.

The man got a long side-eye. Were didn't really apply. It was like being an Auror. Once a Reporter, always a reporter. It made him nervous. Still, no need to alert the man to it. "Moving pictures, or muggle photography?"

Justin had to blink for a moment when his hand was being patted whilst he was pulling it away. That certainly didn't happen often. Wait... Awww.. did this man already miss his arm? How flattering. Sabel must really miss his life partner to be wanting more friendly-brother-like affection from Justin. He knew from experience way back, how absence made the heart grow fonder and all. That would explain why he seemed too distant and quiet.

Huh, he hadn't thought this much about another person's actions before. Okaaaay, Justin supposed he could give it to him some more as the arm slide right back over Sabel's shoulder. There. Was that better? "Good." He offered a smile too, see, he could be selfless occasionally. Heh heh.

Justin did watch him as he indeed ate the paper before drinking the coffee. "..Would you like some syrup with that?" Welp, he had no reason to question the man any longer on his eating habits. So he was working as an Auror for ten years. That definitely put him in his early thirties if he went to work straight after graduating. "Cool. I can respect that, did you work right after Hogwarts? You did graduate from here, right?" He looked close to his baby sister's age, so it had to have been after his time.

So what kind of photographs? "Moving, but still photographs too. You get more time to appreciate a certain detail without missing it." That was his take on it. "Do you have any hobbies?" Surely he didn't just spend all his time teaching and eating paper?

It was working. It was working! The man's hand was leaving and ------- No. No it was back again. WHY was it back? Was it a thing to hug and eat at the same time? Didn't eating naturally afford some personal space, what with elbow knocking and all that?

Needless to say, he couldn't keep the unimpressed look off his face as he went rigid still. Somewhere in the back of his mind he wondered if the groundskeeper responded to movement, and that a lack of such movement might cause him to loose interest. If that didn't work, drastic measures might have to be taken. Because clearly being polite and strange all in the same moment didn't work.

The man didn't mind his paper eating, even though he himself did, and had no sense about social manners what-so-ever. Problem came that it wasn't exactly early morning anymore either, and he wasn't interested in putting on a show for anyone.

Fussing a bit with shrugging his shoulder a little, Sabel shook his head and took a long gulp of his coffee. "Syrup would ruin the texture." His tone was as flat and unamused as he had ever heard it. Perhaps if it wasn't so early morning he could properly deal, but he had to face it. He had just eaten paper to try and get this guy off his back.

Clearly, it wasn't working. Still there was some civility left on the table, and given he had to work with the groundskeeper, it was best to maintain it. "I did, on both accounts. Yourself?"

Maybe he would be a dramatic story-teller like Airey, given to gestures and other such distractions.

Problem was, as much as the man was irritating, there was a curiosity too. For instance, he preferred muggle pictures over moving ones. It was a very curious thing coming from a wizard. "There is a permanence and lasting nature to still images. Which, I thought was the point of photographs." After all, in the muggle world moving pictures were called movies. Or vines, depending on the generation.

As for his own hobbies, it seemed like a question born of a dangerous nature. The man was knocking at another door to his life, and he wasn't sure he wanted to open it. But, again, there was no sense in being rude. "You mean besides finding new sources of fiber?" He could chew on that for a bit. "Rock climbing and any sort of outdoor activity."

And only when the words were out of his mouth did he realize how big of a door he had opened. Outdoor. Groundskeeper. Merlin, he was never going to be rid of the man now.

Yummy nummy..

These pancakes were DEEEE-licious.

His compliments to the...elves. Yes, the elves. As Justin continued tucking into his pancake meal, two at a time, his other arm was just freely hanging over Sabel's shoulder. He could feel him sort of squirming in his arm. Justin glanced over at him. He had a very concentrated look like.. aha. "I'm guessing that paper didn't agree with your stomach." See, paper bad. He couldn't imagine paper being easy to pass out later on. "Have a toast, here." No ifs or buts about it as he went to stuff a freshly toasted toast into his mouth. Eat up Professor Man, you could thank the Groundskeeper later.

Now this also explained his stiffiness. Geez, this poor man had to work all the time. Not much time for fun when training to get the bad wizards and witches. "Cool. You definitely worked hard to get to where you are." Job well done as he patted his head. Pat, pat. His arm momentarily left again so he could stroke his own beard in thought. It had been a little while, "Well, yes and no." Arm went right back over his shoulder but less of holding and more of using his shoulder as support for his elbow, as the man was left to motion with his words. "I had went to Wizarding University right after Hogwarts, graduated and then taught at Durmstrang for a number of years before working with The Quibbler." There, that was a sweet summary of it.

"Right? Not many magazines seem to appreciate that take. It's why I stuck with The Quibbler since they're more open accepting." Which could explain how they received a poor reputation from a number of others. But oh well, it was their loss.

You know, Justin was about to laugh considering the direction and number of subjects that statement usually led to. But then it happened, Justin's eyes widened at that proclamation, "Bloody 'ell. You too?" As he grinned again before roughly patting his upper back. Now his arm was fully back with himself as he took his own cup of coffee to drink. "Hah. Just as I thought, Sabby, you are an alright bloke." Yep. This man was stuck with him for good. Whether he liked or not. According to Justin though, how could he not? He was not getting any hints otherwise. "How about sports or do you not have much time for that?"

There was a certain point at which self-control and composure snapped. A stretching and breaking point, when patience had been maintained beyond it's limits and there was little else one could do to keep their sanity. Sabel had never imagined it might come with a slice of bread being nearly crust-fed into his own mouth, but it was a different point for everyone.

For a very wonderful, albiet brief moment, the ex-Auror completely missed almost everything that was going on. The offending arm and head pat, the words dribbling out of the groundskeeper's mouth and almost, just almost, the bread as well. It was all in favor of trying to figure out exactly how Fuller-Thompson was able to light things on fire purely by will. He might have succeeded too, if he had been able to decide between the bread, and the man's seat.

Unfortunately, he could not make quite a quick enough decision, or quite figure out how to cast such a non-verbal spell, before the bread was pushing against his lips. Then, everything was remembered and the breaking point fell back under some semblance of self-control. His hand shot up, nudging it's way between the bread and his own mouth (and nearly knocking the whole-wheat flying in the process). "Allergic to glutten."

Or, at least, for the moment he was. Just as he was allergic to head pats and space-invasion.

And as soon as there was a spare space for him to move, he shifted forward away from the arm and around the bread, picked up his coffee and took a long sip of it, keeping the cup protectively close. "Sounds like you worked hard too."

Was a slight bit better and more polite than stating the fact that a newspaper was still a newspaper, and a reporter was still a reporter, regardless of their leniency or lack-there-of. Though, admittedly he was quite surprised the man held record at Durmstang. His hug-ness didn't exactly speak to the strict standards of the school, and he had to wonder exactly what the man taught.

It would have been a question out of the gates, had it not been forestalled by near horror. Him too? The coffee nearly came out his nose with the surprise, and the rough pat to his back, and he only narrowly avoided choking and sputtering on it thanks to that patting. Dear Merlin. This didn't mean the man was going to invite him on some skirmish around the grounds did it?

Clearing his throat, and finding his person largely unhindered by any resting arm, Sabel thought it wise to make a break for it. He gathered up his paper, nodding in what he could manage as acknowledgement. "I appreciate the vote of confidence." He polished off his coffee and made to stand. "Don't have much time for sports, myself. And speaking of time, I had best get to my lesson preparations. Enjoy the rest of your breakfast Mr. McLeod."
