Default Herbology Lesson I - Composting

Professor Paul Myers is sitting in the front of the Greenhouse, where there are four tables lined up parallel to each other as well as a table up front, where Myers is leaning casually on said table. The table in the front is longer than the rest because there are different bins on the table holding various things; there is one bin containing trash that Paul collected himself from rubbish bins, the paper products. Another holds the food trash from the Great Hall; a third one holds leaves, grasses, and twigs; a fourth holds things Paul has gathered from the lake; a fifth holds different containers of…..manure.

The smell of the Greenhouse is probably none too pleasant.

Paul has his gloves on, ready to go, as he greets the students when they walk in. He expects that they had made themselves familiar with his classroom rules, especially the two special ones.

The blackboard behind Paul is empty for now, but will soon be filled up(hopefully). The weather outside might be a bit cold, but in the Greenhouse it is nice and warm without being too stuffy.

“All right everyone--we’re going to be taking some notes and then getting...dirty. So PLEASE--make sure you have your gloves with you today!” He calls out as his bright and shiny faced students waltz through the door. “Get in a circle for our meditation--” Because you just CAN’T start class without first clearing your head
.
OOC: Hi guys! Kate here. Make sure you read all of our rules and stuff. [[SS ones AND my own]] I will know if you have not(; Please note that this is NOT the first Herbology class of the year; your student has been attending lessons with Paul for months now. The following happen every class:
*Paul begins class with a meditation, with the students holding hands in a circle. Your student should know by now that this is expected of them at the beginning of class.

*Everyone must say something nice about a student when they walk in, preferably someone who has not had anything nice said about them already.

*There is a basket of flowers Paul keeps in the front; feel free to have your character come up at any time to grab one, and give it to another student if someone particularly touches them emotionally or anything.
I include this so that you are better able to determine how to play your character in this lesson! Thanks, guys! I will start the lesson in about….15 or so hours. <3

Paulina grinned as Professor Myers praised her answer. It was always nice to hear from one of her favourite teachers. Still smiling, she began jotting down the different points off of the board. Even though she already knew this stuff she didn't see harm in writing it down.

And WHY was he lecturing Damien on the use of toothpicks? Eyebrow raise.

Anyway.

They were dealing with compost which wasn't really a surprise for Paulina because she had a feeling that was what was going to happen. There were SO many things that could go into compost. Seriously she could list a number off if asked to but she was going to keep things short and sweet since there were other people in the class and she needed to be fair.

Paulina raised her hand to answer. "A lot of food items can be used in compost. Even tea bags or grounds can be used. Egg shells and potato peels..." Those were just to name a few. "Without getting all technical, the simplist way to distinguish between compost and fertilizer is that fertilizer feeds PLANTS and compost feeds SOIL." She'd go more into depth if he wanted to, but it seemed that the Hufflepuff Prefect had it covered. She must be into Herbology too.

Candice didn't offered any answer for the first question because everyone else already mentioned what she's about to say so she didn't see the point repeating it again.

Composting? That's what they're going to learn today? That might explained the awful smell. And then the Professor asked the next question. Materials that can be used for composting? Someone already mentioned garbage, leaves, apple core. OH! She had one. The Gryffindor raised her hand. "Gelatin, Professor."

Sigh.

“Go ahead and give that flower to someone--right now--someone who you think deserves it.” He said softly, but with a….litttttttle bit of force behind it.

Tsk tsk.

.............."Also---someone tell me--what is the difference between compost and fertilizer?"
His answer had been completely ignored by the Professor who instead shook his head and Yoongi somehow knew what was going to come. The flower. Of course. Couldn't there be a lesson where he could keep a flower for himself? He wanted to say something back but the little force behind the kind words did not go unnoticed. "Alright, fine" he sighed and took the flower from behind his ear. SNIFF bye bye pretty flower.

Now, who to give this to? Seriously, his first instinct had been giving it to the person closest by him. But then Norah caught his attention and his jaw dropped as she was EXPLAINING like really explaining all that. He didn't get any of it, like Potions, Herbology was not his strongest subject. He only got good grades because he was good at the practical parts of the lessons.

Placing his notebook down (after writing down his notes) , the Gryffindor walked his way over to the Hufflepuff Prefect before holding out his hand to give her the purple flower. "Here, for you and you told me you weren't good at anything" he grinned as he playfully poked the top of her head.

As he turned around, he looked at the Professor with a 'happy now?' smile and walked back to his notebook and at the same time he heard another students getting yelled at for using a toothpick. ...................right.....

Oh, and as for the answer to the question....he wasn't going to answer. Mainly because he didn't really know and also because hello, anyone heard Norah's answer? Anyone else's answers would sound dull.

Professor Myers gave them all a look that practically screamed NOOOTES!!! Notes about.. compost. Compost. This was a slightly different turn than Olympia was expecting, but all the same she picked up her quill and quickly wrote down the notes on the board.

What can be composted? Somehow, Olympia knew this and raised her hand. The Professor didn't seem to mind her answer about plant food so she figured he would appreciate this also.. hopefully. "Cardboard egg boxes, Professor?" It was kind of a question. "And small twigs.. but you'd have to watch out incase you were trying to compost Bowtruckles." The Gryffindor smiled and nodded. CoMC was another favourite lesson.

Janelle took notes as the professor finished the discussion on what plants needed to grow and be healthy. Then the talk turned to compost. What could be used for compost? So many things could be used and the students' answers reflected that fact. Janelle had an answer, a good one too. Raising her hand, she hoped that she would get called on before someone else thought of her answer.

"Worms are used in compost. They turn the garbage into even better stuff for the plants, right?" The whole process sounded pretty gross, but the outcome was positive.......so it was a good thing overall. As for the difference between compost and fertilizer, Janelle had some thoughts, but wasn't really sure how to explain everything.

Whoa.

Lots was being said and Hady well she needed to do something very Hady-ish right now. Sitting down she pulled out a clean sheet of parchment and her self inking quill. Tugging off a glove she took to take her notes (lots of um) in her fine neat little writing.

Upon hearing some of her mated answers to the newest question all she was able to focus on was getting ready EVERYTHING done. Especially Norah's reply because hello, that was just brillian! Bravo Norah! Hady sent the girl a grin.

Not having anything new to share Hady once more kept quiet for now. She was patiently waiting to make compost for the plants.

Even as the professor started to look towards him, Daxton quickly averted his gaze before they could make eye contact. He did not expect to be addressed at all, seeing as he had not offered up any answer, so when he heard his name spoken Daxton was initially a little surprised. Perhaps he had been spotted hiding from the initial hand-holding in the lesson.

Daxton glanced back at Myers. See him in his office? ... Well... alright. This would not be the first time he had been asked to see a teacher after class. In fact, this was the third time, by his count. He was quite used to the request, so gave a simple nod of his head, silently turning his pen between his fingers.

As for the question, the first answer that came to Daxton's mind was... well, dead things. Dead bodies. Carcasses. Granted, he was no expert in either compost or decomposing dead entities, but it sounded like a logical enough answer to him.

Not that he provided the answer at all. It was something he was not a hundred percent sure of, and even if he was the type to say an answer out loud, he would not have done so for that very reason. The possibility that he might be wrong was too high, so Daxton instead added the suggestion to his notes, followed by a question mark.

... And then suddenly sneezed again, managing to bring his arm up to his face just in time to muffle the already quiet sound. Ugh. Plants. Much more interesting when you looked at them in books. Awful when you got anywhere near them.

Just like the smell in here, by the way. Even though Daxton was sneezing a fair amount, that did not stop him from being able to smell the very obvious stench of manure in the room. It was vile. He pulled the neck of his school sweater up and over his nose and mouth, making a now-hidden disgusted face, and resumed his silence, though it was still punctuated by the odd unwelcome 'kitten sneeze'.

Maggie was still eying things. And PEOPLE. Especially people. Like. What was going on there? She was VERY suspicious. Which only proved that apparently she didn't really trust Kaycee as much as she wanted to. Not that she'd ever say that out loud.

Had she betrayed her????

But also, did he FOR REAL just give the head girl ALL THE FLOWERS? Charlotte peeeeeered at him for a moment, and then the realization hit.

ROONEY WAS IN LUUUURVE.

.... that was HILARIOUS.

Giggles commenced.
Just FYI, Maggie's compliment to Rooney had been genuine.

Girls DID like flowers so he'd done good.

Girls also apparently liked tumbleweed and archenemies. What? Or at least that first year did. Charlotte was it? Maggie gave her a confused look, not really sure what to make of that. How on earth did tumbleweed help you find an archenemy? Maggie sort of got why HAVING an archenemy was somewhat appealing.

But tumbleweed? What?

Walking in, Noel took a seat next to Benzi and greeted the professor. "Hello professor" And oh yes the compliment thing, Noel looked around and saw Maggie. Passing a smile her way, he announced: "Maggie Traulton is quiet epic" There.
Her eyes fell on Noel as he walked in.

His smile made her smile too, despite everything and his compliment did cheer her up somewhat. She WAS quite epic, wasn't she? Good to know he agreed.

Now where was his girlfriend to hear him say that?

Her compliment...Merlin…”While I agree, I think girls enjoy more than just flowers.” Not that Paul was any sort of expert….on women.Pffft.
Had Professor Myers just disagreed with her? Publicly?

Maggie frowned at him openly before realizing that it was probably NOT wise to do that to a professor. Nope, she did NOT want to get in trouble again so she just shrugged. She hadn't said that flowers were the ONLY thing that girls enjoyed after all.

But Rooney definitely had the right idea there.

...speaking of flowers.

Maggie, still somewhat confused and taken aback by THINGS, looked up at Zeke when he addressed her. "...your soul and things?" She repeated with a small amused smirk as she took the flower from him. Silly, he was being silly. But it was definitely a welcome distraction. So he got a small curtsy from her.

Thank you, Zeke.

After the meditation circle (during which Maggie hadn't QUITE been able to get rid of all of her negative thoughts) Maggie missed out on the first question. Like, people had already said all the things she knew about plants. Air, water, sunlight. What else was there really? So instead of raising her hand she'd started doodling on her parchment a little. Totally paying attention and stuff.

Would Myers notice if she wrote Kaycee a note and levitated over to her?

She was tempted to try.

Giving that one boy who'd suggested 'human' (Oliver) a long stare, Maggie eventually raised her hand to contribute. "Straw?" Or something like that. The smell coming from those bins was REALLY bad. And she'd thought she might be immune to bad smells after that detention. Apparently not. She wrinkled her nose and even reached up to rub it with her hand.

Ew.

Yes, his soul and things, which is apparently what the flowers were for. For touching souls and things, ergo, she won. Zeke nodded, his smile easy and casual. Maggie's little curtsy thing though, was no only cute, but it caught him by surprise. With a slight head tilt, he returned the gesture with a small bow. Why did he do it? He didn't know... nor did he care.

But apparently learning and things were going to happen. Was there a limit on how many flowers he could hand out during the lesson? Could he just give them ALL to Maggie?

The second he said they weren't fertilisers, he knew they were compost things... but... wasn't compost and fertiliser the same thing?? He always thought it was. Like how the English language had a hundred words that all meant the same thing, or there about. As far as he was concerned, his answer was correct.

But... apparently they were different, so he was lost as to HOW that was the case. Instead, Zeke listened to everybody else suggestions as to what compost was, listing all sorts of degradable stuff. Hand up, he contributed his two knuts worth. "Biodegradable things, Sir, so like, anything that was once living." Yeah. How was that for a sensible answer?

Angel looked at the Professor and smiled. "It's okay." Angel really thought that it was after all she and her sister did look alike and for a new Professor it might be hard to tell them apart. She raised her hand when she heard the next question. "Is compos made of stuff that can rot, so that it can make the grass new, though different type of compos is used for different plants."

Which, was gross to think about. Who would want just a pile of rotting food with worms and grossness in their garden? Of course, it probably made sense. The type of people that had gardens were probably in to that rotty buggy thing.

“It’s...exactly what recycling is...since recycling is reusing anything in a new way...there is no destruction of matter, m’dear...only the transferal of energy. Compost is like that.” He explained to...Miss Richards. “Apple cores! Yes! A very popular component of compost.”

Oh yeah. He did his reading alright. Henric always saw how his mother plant in her back garden which gave him some sort of an idea too. Thank youuu Mum....

Another apple cores...but Henric named quite a few other good ones from the food department. “I particular enjoy orange peels--because they smell pretty good for awhie--unlike the apple cores.” Which..blegh. They smelled pretty awful. “LEAVES are good, too, YES YES!” he was getting excitable again. Hopping.

Henric was...pretty much on point. “Composting...goes with soil, as fertilizer goes with the actual plants--yes--the roots, specifically!” he nodded.

Maybe she WAS actually invisible? Dot glanced at her arm, but it was there in all its freckled glory. Hmph. Just unimportant.

She caught the second question, though, and her freckle arm shot up in the air. Wait, what was the question? "It's garbage. It smells terrible. Do plants think that we smell terrible? I mean, not that they think but... anyway, food garbage, by the smell of it."

Oh, Miss Wojack. Paul smiled kindly at her...she seemed...a little out of sorts right now. “Interesting question, Dot. Do I think plants think we smell terrible?” He sighed. “I think...to plants...IF they could smell--they’d think we smell artificial.” Not necessarily terrible.

Question! Oliver's hand shot into the air. Wait, what had the question been? His hand slowly lowered again. Oh right, compost. What could be composted. Uh, Oliver did not know what composting meant. Had that already been covered? Had he just missed it? He did hear the part about it having to be natural. Well, what was more natural than a human being? His hand raised into the air again.

"A person!"

...wait...what? Paul blinked at the child…….a HUMAN compost?! That sounded like a horror film that would plague his deepest, darkest NIGHTMARES. Paul just….oh gosh. He was appalled again.

APPALLED. AGAIN.

“....Mr. Borze...Borze...Oliver! Do you know what compost is?” he asked softly. “Listen to your classmates….and what they’ve all suggested? What do you THINK compost is, m’boy?” Use those critical thinking skills, eh?

Everybody knew about the water and carbon dioxide stuff, so she could skip over those. "Plants need loads of different nutrients-I think there are 17 chemical ones, maybe 16. Some of those are Nitrogen 'cause cells need those AND because it's used in the chlorophyll they use for photosynthesis." She paused for a moment to remember that time in first year when she'd accidentally called it 'photography.' See that? That was called learning stuff. "Another nutrient is Phosphorous and they need that for photosynthesis too, especially in turning all the energy into energy they can use in their itty bitty plant parts. Then there's potassium and calcium and magnesium 'n all those." The other ones weren't as important anyways, or at least she couldn't remember the specific uses so she could pretend they were less important.

"Compost helps plants get all the nutrients they need 'cause the soil doesn't always have them all, so compost has to be made of things that all the organic stuff that plants need for their cells to function right." Because all those nutrients she'd just said were IMPORTANT. "The cool thing is that compost is that it can be made of loads of different natural things, 'cause almost all organisms need some of the same basic stuff to survive, so a lot of things can be helpful in compost. I read that it doesn't even have to be plant waste, and that you can use fish as compost because they have lots of nutrients too, and can help fertilize a plant and make the soil full of good nutrient-y stuff." Had she said too much? She was starting to feel a little bit like Sophie Brown after doing so much talking to answer a question. Sophie Brown was a rad feeling. Was it this exciting every time the head girl knew stuff or was she used to it by now?

….Paul stared at Norah the entire time she spoke. His lips had piqued into a smile, and he ruffled his hair….because wow.

He was very impressed. “Nitrogen is very important--and--” oh she had MORE? Paul sat on the edge of the table, in front of the bins, and just smiled as he watched her. Look at her...look at those wheels turning. This was learning. THIS was what teaching was about, wasn’t it?

Paul wanted to cry.

“By all means, Miss Kittredge, you should just--come up here and teach the class--Merlin--three points to you! Three points for being...well, informed. Smart.” He BEAMED at her before calling on someone else.

So wrapped up in his thoughts was the golden haired lad, that he didn't notice the Professor's twitching or agitated demeanor until he was being yelled at.

HOLD UP.

HOLD. UP.

HOLD. EVERYTHING. UP.

Since when did Professors yell at him? He was a chill dude, one that caused no trouble aside from opening the chamber of secrets last term, WHAT HAD HE DONE??

....The toothpick? MYERS WAS UPSET ABOUT A SPLINTER OF WOOD? Rorie would have been cracking up. "........... Aight?" Damien scratched his head and pulled the toothpick from his lips before pocketing it. "I wasn't cleaning my teeth, just so everyone knows what's up." because that would have been gross and Damien had better manners tan that, he just liked chewing on toothpicks.

Psh.

Settling back comfortably in his chair, Damien once again turned silent, he only knew one thing about compost and fertilizer and it was that both were disgusting and dirty. Blergh,

Sigh.

Maybe he’d been too mean to the boy. Maybe he should...apologize. Merlin. But no time for apologies now----he was teaching a class! He’d write one up later and have it sent Damien.

Did the boy think he was mean, now?

As for the first question, he really didn't feel the need to answer because everyone else had already gone ahead and done that. It was a pretty basic question too, so eh. No harm done. Not enough to make Myers think he didn't care or anything, right? 'Cause of course Zander cared. This was HERBOLOGY they were talking about here. Ahem.

"Some people put weeds in compost," he chipped in.

Weeeeeeds. Paul nodded. “Weeds are so..interesting. It depends on the weed--and also, funny how weeds are not good for our plants while they’re inhabiting the same space--but when in compost, they can be helpful. Very good, Mister Adair!”

Anywaaaay...

Compost!

Cool!

That would explain the awful stench in here but it certainly got Professor Myers going. Just look at the man all excited. Hehe. But to answer his questions. Adi had almost raised his hand but stopped short at one answer. Human? Waaaah?! Surely that kid was JOKING. Slightly amused, he raised his hand completely. "Chicken manure is a great nitrogen source, Professor. And compost give nutrients to the soil and fertilizer gives nutrients to the plants, I think.'' It was something like that, if he had read his books properly.

CHICKEN MANURE! Paul smirked. “It’s a wonderful nitrogen source--very good--and YES exactly!” he clapped for Adi.

An amused smile playing upon her lips, Sophie let that be all on the topic and turned her attention to the blackboard as students spoke and plants' needs were added to it. Yes, yes, all things she already knew, simple things, nothing worth writing down. Good for the new kids, less exciting for a seventh year, but useful all the same.

Composting was a... fun topic, really, and Soph started to raise her hand to offer up something to the discussion... until Norah Kittredge started talking, and the Head Girl's hand went down.

Sweet Merlin. That was... the most Sophie Brown-like spiel Sophie Brown had ever heard. Could... um... Norah get some house points for that? Could Soph suggest that to Myers? Would he get mad? Probably. Would he get mad if she started CLAPPING for Norah? Probably. But there she was, marveling over the Hufflepuff prefect and hoping with bright, shiny eyes that her friend got the praise she deserved... until she became aware that she COULD reward Norah, at which point she hurried to retrieve a flower and delivered it to the Hufflepuff with a bright smile.

"That was brilliant." And back beside Rooney she went.

Paul noticed that, shooting them both a smile as Sophie delivered the flower to Norah’s desk. The flower practice...it was so nice. He thought he might keep it for every term...not just this year.

Hmm.

It was something to certainly think about.

“It was brilliant. It was.”

“Tea bags--cool---” he nodded at her. “A lot of herbologists like to use egg shells…” For some reason, Paul thought...egg shells were so weeeeeeird. “And yes! Fertilizer and compost--good way of explaining it, Miss Holiday!”

Composting? That's what they're going to learn today? That might explained the awful smell. And then the Professor asked the next question. Materials that can be used for composting? Someone already mentioned garbage, leaves, apple core. OH! She had one. The Gryffindor raised her hand. "Gelatin, Professor."

Paul thought this was a rather curious answer. Gelatin. “Well--you certain can compost that, yes, Miss Messer--” he chuckled a little.

Awwww. Another flower for Norah. It was filling Paul with the warm fuzzies! He smiled and nodded approvingly at Yoongi before moving on.

“YES--cardboard anything, actually--which I find so INTERESTING!” because whow ould think CARDBOARD would make a good compost?! “Very good!”

“YES. While we aren’t composting the worms, exactly--using the worms IN a composting process is highly advised for many plants--worms are GOOD for them. Excellent point, Miss Guidry!”

Worms, lovely worms.

Hady was being awfully quiet today. Paul was a little worried--but then again, he could remember having days where he just...wasn’t into talking during class. It was okay. He just shot her another encouraging smile before moving on to another worrying student….

Daxton.

Paul grabbed a tissue box he kept in here when he taught classes--NOT by any of those bins, thank you--and just set it down on Daxton’s table in front of him. If he didn’t want to use them--fine. Paul just...gah.

He wanted to help.

SPOILER!!: Maggie

Maggie was still eying things. And PEOPLE. Especially people. Like. What was going on there? She was VERY suspicious. Which only proved that apparently she didn't really trust Kaycee as much as she wanted to. Not that she'd ever say that out loud.

Had she betrayed her????

Just FYI, Maggie's compliment to Rooney had been genuine.

Girls DID like flowers so he'd done good.

Girls also apparently liked tumbleweed and archenemies. What? Or at least that first year did. Charlotte was it? Maggie gave her a confused look, not really sure what to make of that. How on earth did tumbleweed help you find an archenemy? Maggie sort of got why HAVING an archenemy was somewhat appealing.

But tumbleweed? What?

Her eyes fell on Noel as he walked in.

His smile made her smile too, despite everything and his compliment did cheer her up somewhat. She WAS quite epic, wasn't she? Good to know he agreed.

Now where was his girlfriend to hear him say that?

Ew.

Maggie had gotten a flower from Zeke, earlier. Yes, Paul was definitely keeping tabs. He liked to see who was hardly getting flowers--and who got very many. Hmm.

“Straw, yes, Miss Traulton--I like using straw.” she and Mr. Browne...Paul looked between them quickly before calling on Mr. Browne.

SPOILER!!: Zeke

“That is a very important characteristic of WHAT makes something a GOOD item in a compost. VERY good, Mr. Browne!” he clapped for the boy. All of this was going on the board, yes? Paul turned to check--yes yes, it was. Thank Merlin for magic.

Paul thought about Angel’s question for a moment.

“I guess...so. Rotting is not a word we typically use for materials in compost---and also, it’s important to realize than you can’t just add….anything to compost. Which I will be explaining in just a feeeeeew minutes!” He grinned and looked around.

“Anyone else have anything to add? You’ve all done so WELL so far!” They had a nice little list...Paul wanted to add some things, but they had compiled a niiiiiiice little list.

Why did most of the professors seem to have trouble pronouncing his name? It wasn't that hard. Bor-ze-kow-ski. Or they could even just say Thomas, that was even easier. But whatever, he didn't really care that much. At least they could all say Oliver.

Uh. No, he had not been listening to other answers. He looked toward his sister but she hadn't said anything yet. Did she know? He wanted to ask her, but professor Myers was waiting for an answer from him and probably would not appreciate if he asked someone else. Didn't he get any lifelines? Phone a friend?

Ava just listened her classmates talking about the differences of fertilizer and compost. She surely didn't have idea that both of them were different because it seemed like they were same in function, right? Right. But then paying attention to the class, now the young lioness knew that they were a liiiiiitle bit different.

And what else needed to be added? She raised her hand and tried to answer the Professor. "How about spoiled leftover food?"

Three points to the Hufflepuff Prefect. Way to go! Paulina couldn't have done a better job with her answer.

Professor Myers seemed to like her contribution, and Paulina wondered if she should add anything else before they moved on. Raising her hand she said, "sometimes I add tofu to compost. When I'm at home." Because she was a vegetarian. "And going off of what Adi said - manure is a great addition. You can add many different kinds: horse, cow, goat, rabbit..." Just to add a few on top of chicken.

Well SHE hoped as Herbology professor, Myers would have loved her answer, but the reaction that he got was better. And she just sat all beamy for a moment, while she considered the next question. Compost. Many of her classmates already listed the usual stuff that Myers was thinking of, but for some reason he was anticipating some ingredient that was atypical. People had mentioned the usual .... things that you could compost; food, mostly. But no one mentioned the one necessity. The one thing that they would all DIE without.

"Water, Professor Myers," Tia's hand shot up. "Without water, you wouldn't be able to compost much of anything."

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Awesome! Norah had gotten them three points! Adi flashed her a grin. He was SUPER proud, you know. Then again, he would always be proud of his Puffers no matter what just as he was of Paulina. Gosh, she really knew this subject. Again the thought of bribing her with crackers to help him study flashed in his mind. Hehe.

Anyway... anything to add to the list? Uhh... Hand up again, Adi suggested, '' Seaweed and kelp also, Professor.'' Had anyone listed those? He couldn't remember since so many answers had been given.

Keeper of Ginny's Cuteness ~ Flying Prefect ~ GOBBLE GOBBLE

Sophie had been fairly quiet with the second question, simply because everyone else had shared their answers right away. She of course knew the difference between compost and fertilizer. But she didn't want to not say anything, Sophie raised her hand.

"Fertilizer adds to the soil's nutrient supply, but instead of feeding the soil food web, the ingredients in fertilizers are intended to meet the needs of fast-growing plants." She spoke softly, then went back to staring at the piles of stuff they were most likely about to compost. That definitely explained the smell.

Anything else to add? Naaaah. He was good. Just ready to actually do something. Though he wasn't all too sure how fond of composting he was. Zander would rather be working with actual plants instead of rotten fruit. But maybe they'd be using their compost in some of the next few lessons, yeah? After all, the Professors always had a funny way of circling things around and around again. So yeah, he wouldn't be too unwilling to do this compost stuff.

As long as they didn't end up smelling like it by the end of class. Because he still stood by his first thought walking in. This place smelled like garbage. Merlin, even the greenhouses smelled nicer when Bentley was teaching here. Probably had something to do with her charm and all of that.

So Zander just nodded along to the additional answers and took a couple of notes too 'cause you never know when they stuff will crop up on NEWTs. Always good to stay prepared, y'know? Ahem.

Uh. No, he had not been listening to other answers. He looked toward his sister but she hadn't said anything yet. Did she know? He wanted to ask her, but professor Myers was waiting for an answer from him and probably would not appreciate if he asked someone else. Didn't he get any lifelines? Phone a friend?

"Um...food? But for plants?" Was that what people had been saying? He had heard one girl say gelatin. He didn't know that plants ate gelatin.

Paul waited for the boy to...answer. “Well, that’s close enough.” He suddenly smiled. “Very good. See what happens when you pay attention? Very GOOD!” he was proud of the boy.

Even though compost was more food for soil than for plants, the boy had tried, and Paul appreciated that.

And what else needed to be added? She raised her hand and tried to answer the Professor. "How about spoiled leftover food?"

“Some leftover food, yes--” he gestured at one of the bins in front. “I have a whoooooole bin of trash from the Great Hall…” It was absolutely GROSS but Paul LOVED IT.

SPOILER!!: Paulina

Professor Myers seemed to like her contribution, and Paulina wondered if she should add anything else before they moved on. Raising her hand she said, "sometimes I add tofu to compost. When I'm at home." Because she was a vegetarian. "And going off of what Adi said - manure is a great addition. You can add many different kinds: horse, cow, goat, rabbit..." Just to add a few on top of chicken.

Tofu...how interesting! “I’ve actually never tried tofu. I’m sure it would have some properties suitable for compost, though. interesting, Paulina--” he smiled broadly at her. “And manure--also another favorite of mine.”

Paul loved poooooooop.

SPOILER!!: Tia

GAAAAAH! Paul almost hugged the girl. “WATER YES!” he exclaimed. “People NEVER remember water! Water is SO very important when making a compost--which I WILL go into in juuuust a minute! But very good, Miss Mancini! Three points for Ravenclaw!” He liked giving out points.

Could he give out points for people just...showing up?

SPOILER!!: Adi

Anyway... anything to add to the list? Uhh... Hand up again, Adi suggested, '' Seaweed and kelp also, Professor.'' Had anyone listed those? He couldn't remember since so many answers had been given.

“Very good! I do enjoy foraging for seaweed in the Black Lake...you all are welcome to join Reagan and I at any time…” he shot a smile to the Ravenclaw. “But Mr. Rehman--very good. Sea plant life...is altogether a different microcosm of existence from the plants I’m familiar with, but using sea plants as part of fertiliizer can have some very interesting results.”

SPOILER!!: Sophie

"Fertilizer adds to the soil's nutrient supply, but instead of feeding the soil food web, the ingredients in fertilizers are intended to meet the needs of fast-growing plants." She spoke softly, then went back to staring at the piles of stuff they were most likely about to compost. That definitely explained the smell.

And as Sophie spoke...Paul was LIGHTING UP. Oh GOSH! “Wow, Sophie--yes--that is--that is VERY spot on--you---you and Miss Kittredge should get to know each other--” both Herbology people, apparently. Well, Paul thought he had other students were very clever in this subject, but today he was quite impressed with Sophie and Norah. “Three points to Gryffindor for expounding just EXACTLY what compost does--very good!” He was…very happy.

Okay. Paul waved his wand at the board, the list of items they came up with showing up immediately. “Good job, everyone. Great. I’m really proud of you all--so smart!” he smiled and tapped his wand on the blackboard. “So these are all materials we use to compost--and there is a REASON for all of this, I swear.” He nodded.

He added a few more items on the board and then glanced back at the class. “All right. These--” he nodded at the board. “Are all items you can use when composting. I did not put them into any...order or anything. But..these can be separated into different categories...and different combinations of these items will be good compost for different plants.” He took a deep breath and realized he forgot a WATER. DYING OF THIRST HERE.

Could he ask a student to get him one? Merlin. He was thirsty.

“As Norah mentioned before---plants need nitrogen---they also REALLY need carbon.” He waved his wand and rearranged the list.

Ahem. Were their brains TEEMING with new information yet? Paul chuckled to himself. “Today...if you haven’t guessed already...we are going to MAKE our very own compost. Each of you will make...a unique compost...which I am SO very excited about what you all come up with! It’s almost….like a CREATIVE process, isn’t it?” Paul thought so.

“Now..to make a compost...I am going to walk us through the steps. And I will...give notes along the way...because there are certain properties to the different materials within compost that are…..good or not good, depending on what you want.” He took a deep breath and hoped they understood.

“...Is everyone ready to MOVE ON?” he asked softly. “If anyone has ANY questions….ask me!” Paul smiled and crossed his arms over his chest.

He clapped his hands together. “OKAY! So--the very first step we’ll do---you must all come get one of these wooden things--” Things was a totally professional word, all right? “And also fill it with soil. There are buckets of soil on each of your tables….make sure you put a GOOD amount of soil in there, all right? Don’t fill it up to the top with soil--but make sure it isn’t just...covering the bottom, all right?” He would be making some compost, too, of course, heh. “So...Get your crate and DO THE THING!” he said excitedly.

“OH! And the reason these crates are nice...is that we can put them outside, where they can attract worms and other bugs to help the composting process--” he nodded.

WORMS were important.

OOC: HOKAY! So Paul made things pretty clear in regards to what they have to do---I cannot post again until around....12PM tomorrow, Central time. So you guys have...22 or so hours? There is no post count for this, but feel free to interact with each other and have fun with it!

Sophie beamed at the Professor and a smile found its way upon her face. THREE points to Gryffindor because of HER. Yes! Maybe she would introduce herself to Norah, they both knew about plants!

Making her away over to the wooden things, she grabbed one. She took her crate back towards her seat and laid it down at her station. Without even pulling on her gloves, she began to transfer soil into her crate. She stopped once it was approximately 1/3 full. Finally, she smoothed the soil down into an even layer. She watched everyone going through the same motions as she, and she smiled around the room. Notes were very important as well as the discussion, but she loved to be working.

Adi grinned at Myers. Score two of two for him! But gosh! Look at that list, yo! It was huge! He got to work once again in the way of making notes just as they had appeared on the board. Amazing what one could put into a compost heap, yeah?

Anyway, they were going to make one of their own? Awesomeee! And yeah, one question... could they move on now? Hehe. But he didn't ask that, instead he remained quiet waiting for them to move on. Okay, one of the wooden crate thingies. They needed one of those. On his way to get one, Adi sidled closer to Paulina. "Hey, Polly. You're a whiz at this subject so I have a suggestion. I'll trade you all the crackers I can get for you studying Herbology with me.'' This was a fair deal, yes?

When he reached the crates, he grabbed one for himself and one for his friend which he held out to her. Onto the soil now!

Kaycee made a face. Ugh. Herbology. She really needed to learn how to skip lessons that involved needing gloves. There was a 12344w5tg;kjel% chance that they'd involve something gross.

Like WORMS and GARBAGE.

Is this what it took to have flowers? Because, in that case, she didn't like flowers any more. ... ... Okay. She did. She just didn't care to know about the process.

She grabbed one of the crates and, double checking her gloves were on correctly, started doing the dirt thing. She was NOT excited that the garbage thing would be next though.

Maybe she could get Dante to do it for her? That would be awesome. She could, like, give him googly eyes or pout or something. That usually worked with him.

Making compost.

Somehow that didn't come as a real surprise to Benny given the topic of conversation that the class had been taking. Adi was his usual knowledgable self, but Paulina was showing her true colors. Future herbologist for sure. The seventh year was avidly taking notes as the discussion insued, copying down the final lists that were compiled on the board thanks to the professor's efforts. Pretty long, he'd say, but then compost was compost, made out of remnants and many possible remnants existed. In fact there were more possibilities with compost then there was along the line of fertilizer.

Yep...he was ready to move on.

Benny listened to the first step, or steps depending on how you looked at it. Simple enough to accomplish first and foremost. He got up from his seat at his table to move towards the front table where the professor was just a step behind his bestie. One wooden crate to start with coming up. Until Adi stopped at housemate's side for some reason and he absently continued on. Seeing the Hufflepuff grab two crates, the Gryffindor figured he was helping AJ.

Except it was for Paulina.

Had he missed something?

Did he really just call a wooden crate a wooden thing. Well he is not wrong. It just sounded like a thing a first year would say when they forgot the word crate. Though even Dante would give first years enough credit to know that word.

So while thinking this, Dante went up at got himself a wooden crate and bought it back to his table or whatever. He was not that excited to be making his own dirt. It was just dirt. Oh sorry, compost. Right, Compost.

Now onto filling it with soil. Professor was going weird instructions for that. So Dante just filled it up to the middle. Since he did not want it overflowing or too less. Made sense to him. But he never did this before or had the slightest idea to in the past. He would just hire a gardener or something.

AND for the record........

googly eyes or pout or something did sometimes work on him.

Default (Miss Sophie Brown, Professor Myers)
∞ 17 | RP entrepreneur | defies gravity | Miss George is flawless | blanket burrito lyfe

Rooney had been wrong his entire life. The best thing in life were Miss Sophie Brown's hugs. She had the perfect amount of love and admiration in her embraces and Roo felt warm inside and like he was skipping on marshmallows, candy floss and clouds. The fact that she thought one flower was enough was the complete opposite and Rooney considered if she knew just how much she did mean to him - not because of the fuzzies she gave his heart, but because everything really was better when she was around. Miss Sophie Brown was like the sun.

And then having her stand near him was pretty much everything. The second year gave her one of his biggest smiles and knocked his elbow against her, gesturing to the flower that he had given her.

A reminder.

He really was going to send her flowers now. Every week. Not on a Thursday, because that was Mama's day. He'd work out the best day for Miss Sophie Brown at another time.

He grunted his disapproval quietly about the compost situation in this class and decided right then that even though he was an overachiever and wanted to get everything right, he was going to let his work be sloppy this time. To make a point. That Professor Myers was the WORST and Miss Sophie Brown had deserved every one of those flowers initially gave to her AND that the flower she had given the Professor was completely undeserved.

AND HE WAS NOT IN LOVE WITH MISS SOPHIE BROWN.

He was 12.

12 year olds didn't fall in love.

No. No, he wasn't ready to move on. He wanted to ask as many questions as he could in a lifetimes worth of breaths, and he wanted to ask even more than that, because he was Rooney. But fine. He could let the class move on; only because he wanted to hurry up and get the technicolour dreamcoat out of there. Roo headed over and got two of the crates -- one for him and one for Miss Sophie Brown, before taking them back to their table and setting them down.

Soil. AKA mud. AKA dirt. AKA boring.

But it went into his crate by the handful.

Hahahahaah. These were nice crates?? Was Professor Myers eating his plants and having a moment?
