Default Fifth Floor Corridor

Connecting the Ancient Runes classroom to the staircases and the other floors of the castle, the fifth floor corridor is home to more than just a few doors. You just have to find the doors to see what's behind them all.

It was nigh on impossible to find a quiet place in this school, that's what Daxton had discovered. He tended to stick to his dormitory in the day time, when the other boys were off... doing whatever it was they did... but as soon as any one of them came back, the simple sounds of their existing was enough to drive Daxton completely and utterly to the brink of madness.

The common room was no better, the Great Hall was out of the question. A lot of the classrooms were locked when not in use, and there was also the risk of a couple of older kids bursting in on Daxton when he was trying to read, and proceed to have a frankly disgusting snogging session before his very eyes. Even the library wasn't safe; once already another boy had crashed straight into him when Daxton had been simply looking for a book to read.

So he had taken to the corridors with one of the books he had taken out of the library, deciding he would deal with the occasional passing student until he discovered a quieter place to read. The Ravenclaw settled himself on the plinth of a random suit of armour, opened his book on his knees, and delved right into reading.

Ah. Peace. Quiet.

Riley was a 'claw with a plan.

She was going to explore the WHOLE school from top to bottom and find the best places to be. Because she was going to be attending Hogwarts for seven longs years, the sooner she found out where all the cool places were the better. She'd heard rumours about secret passage ways and much more and it was all so interesting. Riley just HAD to know about all of it first hand. She crossed 'fifth floor corridor' off the list she'd made on the back of her hand and darted down it. Little did she know that just down the corridor from her was someone who undoubtedly didn't want to see her (or anyone).

One minute she was humming off-key to herself, the next she caught sight of not only a SHINY suit of armour but a buttface too. "HEY," she called, going on over to him, fully aware that he didn't want to be disturbed. No one sat next to a suit of armour in a deserted corridor with a book and wanted to be interrupted. Hehe. He was interesting though. Rude. But interesting. "What are y'reading?"

All sorts of ambient noises were floating through the corridor, and though Daxton found them mildly irritating they were the kind of noises he would not be able to escape wherever he went. Not until he found a way to block them out completely at least, and Daxton was hesitant about doing such a thing, because he relied on his hearing to let him know when there was a possible imminent threat.

He heard the humming before anything else. That, plus the approaching footsteps, told Daxton someone was about to head down his corridor. He gave an irritated sigh, kept his eyes on the book, and pretended to read until they passed.

Except that they did not pass. They yelled, from halfway down the corridor. Daxton narrowed his eyes at his book; he knew that voice from the Common Room. He gave another irritated sigh, louder and more obvious this time, and looked up to see Riley Archer heading his way.

No peace in this place. None.

To answer her question, Daxton held up his book so she could see the front cover: 'The Dark Arts Outsmarted'. He'd found it in the library, and there were some chapters within that made for some very interesting reading. Interesting enough that he was tempted to go out of his way to approach that Dakest teacher at one point. Maybe.

There. She knew what he was reading. Would she leave now?

Probably not.

Where they were going was still a mystery, one he wasn't in a hurry to uncover - and of course, Janelle could have her say in the matter, ladies pick and all. It was while he stepped out of class, that he finally peered at the questions on the flash-card....

The questions were fairly standard, but also personal, which he was okay with at this point.

He was about to ask if she wanted to start them off, but seeing as the first question WAS quite personal, he didn't mind taking a leap and going for it himself. "So uhh, question one, share something personal about yourself," he read out in case she hadn't seen it yet, "I guess um, you should know that I'm adopted, my biological parents died."

..

It wasn't the type of thing to come up in conversation very often.

They were free.......free from the classroom and on their way to.......well Janelle didn't exactly know where. Before she could ponder the questions, where they were going or anything else, Zeke had his big reveal. Janelle didn't know what to say. "Wow" I'm sorry didn't seem like it would cover what she was feeling. She didn't feel sorry for Zeke in a pitying way. She felt sorry that he had to deal with something that horrible. Sorry that he would never be able to see his parents again. "That's awful. I mean not the adoption part, but the losing your parents part. Thank you for sharing that with me." Janelle had a bunch of questions to ask Zeke, but she knew that it was now her turn.

Janelle took a deep breath. She had thought about what she would tell Zeke. Nothing she could say could compare to what Zeke had shared. "Well my family moved around a lot and I went to alot of different muggle schools before I came here. At this one school......these girls bullied me. It was hard, but I learned how to fight back and be strong." There that wasn't so bad. One question down, on to the next one.

It was hard, but I learned how to fight back and be strong." There that wasn't so bad. One question down, on to the next one.

He had been rather blunt with it, because even now, putting it into words was just, strange. Janelle's 'wow' was pretty much expected. It was a bit of an awkward bomb to drop. Zeke shrugged. "Dad died when I was very young, I don't even remember him, but losing mum was hard." He only hoped he'd seen enough of death in his lifetime, he didn't much fancy witnessing more.

But then it was her turn, and already he felt a little lighter knowing that whatever she had to share couldn't be much worse... though, it wasn't good. Zeke nodded his understanding of her struggles, it was something he could empathise with. "I'm sorry you had to go through that," he started, sincerely, "some kids can be downright nasty." And WHAT they did to Janelle, he didn't know, and nor did he care to find out, that was incredibly personal.

Looking down at his flash-card, he noticed that question one had disappeared, huh... they were making progress. But then... no... gosh... impersonate a celebrity or Professor? He didn't do celebrities, and Sabel was difficult to impersonate, really... so it left him with one clear option. His own Head of House.

"Let's see if you can guess who I am, shall we?" he mused, slipping the flash-card into his pocket.

Bracing himself for a moment, Zeke then straightened his back, modelled something of a victory pose, with his face turned upward... why? he didn't know, it was just a thing he figured was appropriate. But then the magic had to happen.

"OH SWEET SOLSTICE! Don't call me Professor! It's ADMIRAL now!"

And here he did something of a jump like he was hopping onto a flying carpet, arms wide to keep his balance. Hopefully he resembled Flamsteed in class, what with the man's habit of jumping onto desks.

Janelle listened as Zeke explained how he had lost his parents. Janelle could not imagine life without her parents. Zeke seemed like a nice boy. She imagined that he had a good adoptive family.......at least she hoped that was the case. Then Janelle's curiosity got the best of her. She had a question that she had to ask. "Do you have any brothers and sisters?" Next to her parents, her siblings were the most important people in her life. She wondered if Zeke had any other members of his family.

Zeke seemed sympathetic as Janelle talked about her bullying experience. She appreciated that. It made the conversation that much easier. "Yeah, kids can be mean sometimes. You know what though? I think that I'm a better person because of that experience. I learned a lot about myself. I'm stronger than I thought I was."

It was time to move on to the next question. When Zeke began his impersonation of a professor, Janelle began to laugh. Of course she knew who he was. "You do a pretty good impression of Professor Flamsteed. The Sweet Solstice gave it away. I think your performance was Stellar!"

Thinking for a moment, Janelle had an idea. "OK, it's my turn now. You get to guess who I am." Janelle put on her perkiest, most cheerful face and gave it a go. "Hello class. I think you all look totes adorbs today. First I'm going to read your proud moments from the Snap Cup." Pretending to reach into her imaginary cup, Janelle looked at her hand and began to read the imaginary note. Oh, I got my own proud moment. I'm proud that I look awesome in pink today. Snaps for me!" Waving her hand dramatically, Janelle snapped her fingers several times and gave Zeke an enormous smile. How could he not guess this one correctly?

It was hard to think how long it had been since she passed, and though a lot of things were easier for him now, it still wasn't something he liked to think about. Siblings though... Zeke smiled. "I do now, I have two sisters, they go to Beauxbatons." Not his own, but they were nothing less than family to him regardless.

Funny though, just looking at Janelle, he wouldn't have been able to say that she was a victim to bullying. She was strong, or at least, she didn't come across as weak. She was obviously smart, and nice and genuine... all good things. "That's good... it's good that something good came of something bad." Perhaps the simplest way of looking at it. People that got bullied usually turned out in one of two ways. They would either hurt others to prevent themselves from getting hurt... or they'd turn out like Janelle, with a good head on their shoulder. This was a win for her.

Once he was done with his short stint of 'playing' Flamsteed, Zeke couldn't help but chuckle. "Thank you, thank you," he said as he gave a small bow in her direction. And gosh. STELLAR! Of course he was. And then it was her turn.

"Go for it," he prompted, leaning against the wall so he could watch.

...

And Merlin.

The second she opened her mouth she knew who it was. The Snaps thing really wasn't necessary because, "Professor Cassie!" He knew. He knew. And he really wanted snap cup things gone from his mind now please. PLEASE?! "That was good, perhaps even too good." She could stop now. Really.

Still leaning against the wall, he pulled out the flash-card and glanced at the next question, already number two was gone from the list.

Admit a worry, or fear.

...

Did he have to?

Zeke wrinkled his nose at this one, but he supposed it could be worse, he could have been partnered with a Troll... at least Janelle was nice, even if he didn't really know her.

"I think... I'm most worried about failure," he started, coming to terms with it as he went. "I never had to succeed before, because there wasn't any hope of getting things right. But now I have to do well, it's a lot of pressure, you know?" And a part of that also came from his dislike of rejection. Failure often led to rejection in one form or another, but he didn't need to voice that. But it also led into the next question, and so he found himself continuing along the line of thought. "If I do alright, and get good grades, I still don't know what I would do with them. Maybe something with potions, or charms. Really though, I have no idea where I want to be in ten years, I'm just trying to get through today."

Clueless. He was clueless. Getting through day by day was the best he could do for now, and eventually he'd figure things out... right?

"How about you? Worries? Fears? Where do you see yourself in ten?"

Janelle returned Zeke's smile when he said that he had siblings. For some reason, she was extremely glad for that. "I have an older sister and brother and I love them to death. Not exactly crazy about being the baby though." And that led into the next question, but not yet. "My sister went to Beauxbatons for a few years, but she ended up here at Hogwarts." Since she was older, she may have been gone before Zeke's sisters got there.

Janelle could barely contain her laughter, as Zeke guessed which professor she was imitating. She liked Professor Cassie, but she was one perky lady. "You got me. How did you ever guess?" That question was asked with a wink.

They were rolling along and Zeke jumped right into the next question..........the next two questions actually. Janelle's head popped up when Zeke revealed his greatest worry. She wasn't really excited about question number three, but when he began to speak, she nodded her head. "We have something in common then. The usual things don't bother me. I'm not afraid of spiders or the dark or anything like that. I'm afraid of failing too. I don't want to let anyone down, especially my family. I have a very overachieving sister. She's smart, always got fantastic grades. She was a Prefect here too, you know. I just want to do as well as she has done and she's a hard act to follow. Don't get me wrong. It's not a comptitive thing and she's very supportive of me. It's just that.........well, I get what you mean about pressure. Mostly it's pressure I put on myself." Whew. That was more than Zeke probably cared to know, but that was her answer so what could she do?

Zeke slid right into the next question. She could understand where he was coming from, not being sure about what he wanted to do in the future. "You know what? I think it's OK not to know right now. We're young. There's still time to figure out what you want." Lots of people took time to figure out what they wanted to do. There was nothing wrong with that.

Janelle had an idea of what she wanted to be doing in ten years."For me, in ten years, I want to have graduated from a university. I love animals so I would really like to be working with them in some way. I think studying Magizoology would be the best way to reach that goal. If I'm not doing that, I think I might like to be an Auror." Janelle knew that those were two completely different careers and neither one was easy, but both of them interested her. She figured if she kept her grades up, she could have a chance at either one.

They only had one more question to go. Would this one be the hardest of all?

Zeke beamed, it was something that came easy when discussing family, the good parts at least. Somehow knowing that Janelle had older siblings was, refreshing, even if she didn't much fancy being the youngest. "I'm the oldest of mine, if it makes you feel any better, I wish I wasn't." Being oldest wasn't always best, though he supposed being youngest wouldn't be too flash either. Perhaps middle child was the way to be? Not that anyone could really control that. He had hoped that Ashley and Avery would join him here, but it didn't seem likely, especially after last term... on top of everything else that had happened at the school before then.

It occurred to him that they probably looked ridiculous from a distance. Between him channeling Flamsteed, and Janelle channeling Cassie, they probably looked mildly insane. At least it was short lived. "It must have been luck," he replied, smirking.

Revealing his fear of failure wasn't something he had planned to do today, or any other day for that matter, so it meant a lot that Janelle could understand, it meant he wasn't alone in this. A part of him did think himself foolish though, like Janelle, he put pressure on himself... but she had a big sister's standards to live up to, whereas he didn't, not really. "I get that, I mean, I know I probably shouldn't worry, but it's hard... my adopted mum was a Ravenclaw, super smart, and though she wasn't Prefect or Head Girl or anything, I just... feel like I need to do as well as her, or better than her," the latter of which was not possible. "She says she expects me to do well, to hold my own, and I know those expectations aren't to get all O's on my exams, but I don't know where to draw the line." What was good enough? But more importantly, what was NOT good enough? And where did he rate at the moment?

He was thankful though, that Janelle was of the opinion they had plenty of time to figure things out, he was banking on that. It didn't stop him from watching her with awe though. The girl knew what she wanted. THAT, was impressive. "That's awesome, though as cool as Aurors are, it's not the life for everyone... my adopted mum was an Auror, she's more the Head boss now though." But yeah, he had a lot to live up to. One of the things he was thankful for though, was that he didn't feel any pressure to follow in her footsteps, if anything, she was encouraging him not to do so.

...

But... they were pretty much done, right? A quick glance at his watch told him they were running out of time. So much for wandering AWAY from the classroom, not that there was anything wrong with loitering down corridors, he still got to stretch his legs.

The last question/prompt was probably the hardest one. Share a secret. It wasn't hard in terms of trusting Janelle enough to reveal something SECRET... but it was the fact that he didn't keep secrets to begin with. Not really. Not by choice. And certainly not about himself. "I don't know what secret to share with you," he stated honestly, staring at the flash-card before looking back up at her. "I don't have secrets... I really don't, at least, they're not my secrets to tell." So.... .... did he have to make something up? Share something random? "Do you want to ask me a question instead?"

So Zeke didn't really like being the oldest child and Janelle wasn't particularly fond of being the youngest. "I guess that saying that the grass is always greener on the other side must be true." There were some perks to being the youngest kid, but overall, Janelle didn't like being the last to do everything.

It was nice to know that she wasn't the only one feeling pressure to excel. Janelle absolutely understood where Zeke was coming from. Then she had a thought. "Since we've shared our fear of failure with each other, maybe we can help each other get through it. If you're feeling stressed about things, you can always talk to me. Maybe I can talk you through it, you know.........help you calm down.......and vice versa. Janelle was sure that there would come a time when she was anxious about not doing something well. She could probably use a friendly ear when that happened, someone who understood.

Then whaaaat? Zeke's mom had been an Auror? How cool was that? Janelle had never met an actual Auror before. Now she understood even more about her partner. The only thing harder than having an overachieving sister would be having an overachieving parent. "Your mom being an Auror Is really cool, but you know what? I bet whatever you decide to do in life will be just as amazing and you'll be wonderful at it."

Zeke revealed that he didn't really have any secrets. Janelle did have a question for him, since he offered. It was kind of a corny question, but she thought that she could tell a lot about a person by listening to their answer. "I have a question for you. If you could wish for one thing and have your wish granted, what would it be."

Peeking at her watch, Janelle decided that she'd better get on with telling her secret. Only it wasn't really a secret at all. "My secret isn't really a secret, but it is something that I've only talked about with a few people. When I was younger, sometimes I felt like I didn't fit in with the other kids. I'm biracial and none of the other kids at my school were. I was a witch living around a bunch of muggles. I guess maybe that's why those girls thought they should bully me because I wasn't like them. But I finally realized that being different didn't mean being bad. Now I don't mind standing out.......'cause I really like who I am, you know?" After spilling her not so secret secret, Janelle realized that she could have just told Zeke her weird second middle name and been done with it. Since they had shared things about themselved, she felt like she could tell him the rest. He wouldn't tell, Janelle was sure of it.

He supposed she had a point there. There really was something to the expression, and though he liked his grass the way it was, he was sure someone else seemed brighter and softer than his at times. And as weird as this non-Runes lesson was, it was actually pretty neat getting to know Janelle, so when she suggested they help each other out with their fear of failure he couldn't help but nod in agreement. "Sounds like a plan. I usually opt for work avoidance tactics, but if you don't mind snapping me out if it, that'd be cool too." Win. They were both totally winning. And OF COURSE, he'd be there to support her in return, he was decent at listening, even if he didn't have answers.

But yeah, his mum as cool, perhaps even the coolest, so Janelle's reaction didn't come as a surprise to him, but what she said about him did.

...

"You think so?" he questioned, because questioning these things seemed easier than accepting them. But, the sentiment was appreciated, "thanks, and you too... I mean, magizoology is awesome, and law enforcement is cool too if that's what you decide." Dragons, DRAGONS were tempting, and it reminded him of Amur... perhaps it was something to look into.

Pushing away from the wall slightly, Zeke looked back down the corridor to see some others returning back to their class, they should move that way too. Slowly. He didn't mind that Janelle did have a question for him, it was only fair that he share something with her since she was so willing to do the same. But if he had one wish?................. THAT WAS HARD! Hard and easy at the same time, because really, there was one thing he would never say no to. "Just that my family stays safe... I don't want to lose them too," he shrugged. But if he thought his own stuff was heavy, Janelle possibly had it worse.

He never even considered race to be a 'thing', but he supposed he didn't understand because it wasn't something HE had to face. From what she'd said, he could empathise with living amongst muggles, and this made him snort lightly. "That's awful, but it reminds me... the kids in our neighbourhood," and he said neighbourhood instead of shelter because that was something he didn't yet feel comfortable discussing with the Ravenclaw, "used to call me Freaky Zekey... they just didn't understand." It wasn't so bad now though, because he lived with magic in his life, and they didn't. It sucked to be them.

Zeke started to take strides back to their class, gesturing with a nod for Janelle to keep pace with him. "It was nice getting to know you, by the way, suppose not learning runes has it's perks." He smiled before slipping back into their classroom. This kinda beat doing normal work.

Janelle was glad that Zeke agreed to be her "Stamp our fear of failure" partner. "Agreed. I'm good at snapping people out of things." This was good. Janelle had gotten to know someone new today. Now that they had pretty much bared their souls to each other it felt like they had some sort of bond. Zeke was cool and she wouldn't mind having him for a friend, if he was ok with that.

Zeke seemed surprised when Janelle said he'd surely do well at whatever career he chose. "Of course I think so. I know that we've only gotten to know each other for like ten minutes, but I think I'm a good judge of people. I don't want to sound like Professor Cassie or anything, but I get a pretty good vibe from you.......a positive one. You'll be great." That she was sure of.

When Zeke revealed his one wish, Janelle completely understood. Her family was the most important thing in the world to her so, of course she would want that too. It made sense, given Zeke's history, that he would want to keep his family safe. "That's an excellent wish", she replied. See, you could tell a lot about a person by knowing what they'd wish for.

Why were kids so mean? Zeke was an awesome kid and it made Janelle sad to think that others couldn't see that too. "Why are kids so mean?", she said, thinking out loud. "You know what I think? I think kids feel threatened by what they aren't familiar with or what they don't understand. I think we're both pretty cool, but some people just didn't get us. Well you know what? That's just too bad for them. We just have to keep on being awesome, whether they understand us or not."

And just like that, their time was up. As Zeke started to return to class, Janelle walked along next to him. "It was nice getting to know you too. I was a little afraid of this activity, but I think it turned out OK." As they reached the classroom door Janelle turned to Zeke and smiled. "I hope I see you around sometime. Remember, if you need someone to talk you down or perk you up, I'm available." With that, Janelle returned to the classroom.

Default Transfiguration Homework #1 Post 2
Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna

Having moved on from Vera Verto, Benny had opted to move on from his original location within the Gryffindor common room. New spell…new place. It made perfect sense. With the target object being a matchbox, the seventh year young man was cautious of not choosing a place that had anything really flammable So the library was out, at least for this spell. Maybe it would be a safer location for something like Scribblifors because quills and books sort of went together. In fact that was where he was going next when he moved onto that spell as the next on the list.

Now for the current spell, Flintifors, Benny had paused in one of the hallways on the fifth floor having spotted a random object. Upon further inspection as he got closer and picked it up, it seemed to be a toy of some sort, almost star-like in 3-dimensional shape. Seemed like a unique-enough shaped object to him and so he stepped out of the way of passing students and settled cross-legged in one of the windows to go to work on.

“Flintifors,” he states, wand out once more, trying out the incantation all the while eying what he was trying to transfigure with focus. “Flintifors…flint-ee-FORS… Flintifors.” See this was why Benny felt uncomfortable with non-verbals…you weren’t physically calling on the spell. You had to get your mouth around the incantation. “Flintifors,” He cast again, his spell work progressing rapidly each time until the final box shape appeared. The Gryffindor tentatively went to try and open it, happy to spot the required matches had developed, one igniting as he tested it out.

Success for this one!
