Student Bulletin Board

In the Entrance Hall hangs a long, vertical cork bulletin board encased in glass for students to hang any notices or signs for the entire student body to read. Members of any house are welcome to post any requests, advertisements, and lost and found notices (or other things) that do not belong on the boards in their common rooms. The glass case surrounding the board is never kept locked.

It had been a month and a half of this, and while Xavi had been understanding at first, he was completely done at this point. The sign had to go up, and it had to go up in a spot where EVERYONE would be sure to see it. He popped open the glass case and quickly pinned the parchment up. It wasn't a professional notice, just his messy handwriting scrawled across an old piece of parchment, but it would do.

Xavier RODRIGUEZ not Zayvierr Fullmer!

He was more than done with people mispronouncing his first name, and addressing him with the incorrect surname. Sure, naming customs were different between here and Catalonia, but he was so sick of correcting a million people every day. He stood back for a second, and looked with satisfaction at his handiwork. That should do it.

That is...if he ever finds out about his missing handy dandy notebook that Ethan kept on stealingborrowing. It was a good thing though that he was able to rip off the used pages before it went missing. There were...well, secret messages, in codes, by the way about...stuff. The Slytherin went up to the ground floor from his dorm room in the Snake’s pit and darted towards the notice board. The older student did see the tiny person standing there, and he also took note of the only notice pinned on the board.

Uhuh. Duly noted, kid.

Ethan stood beside the young boy, and placed his own notice. “Do you have a nickname, Master Rodriguez?” the Slytherin asked without looking at the kid as he stuck his piece of parchment with the sticking charm. “Adhaero.” He did it non-verbally, by the way.

Hello, kid. Hi.

Xavier didn't hear the older student approach until he was right next to him. He nodded firmly at the question. "Yes. Some people call me Xavi." tcha-vee, by the way. Not zay-vee. What was with the 'master Rodriguez' anyway? His first name was up there on the board, plain as day.

He watched closely to see the spell the Slytherin used to put up his notice. It would be easier next time than push pins, but whatever he did, he did silently.

Xavi tried hard to keep his eyes from widening in amazement, but he was amazed. As a first-year muggleborn kid, he was pretty sure only incredible witches and wizards could do non-verbal magic. Instead of giving away his surprise he asked "which spell was that?" Information. The more he knew, the more he could do.

“Great to meet you, Xavi.” Tcha-vee. Totally nailed it, so he knew he was safe. “I’m Ethan.” The Slytherin gave the kid a salute. Easy name to remember...and it was easy to pronounce, thank Merlin.

And a question already? Well, he really shouldn’t be surprised because the kid’s a Ravenclaw. He’d seen him around before, sporting blue-trimmed robes days ago. “It’s the sticking charm.” He replied as he glanced back at the notice board to see his notice holding up without any pushpins.

Back to the boy, Ethan knew the kid wanted to learn it. He didn’t ask him how to do it though, so he’d remain quiet for now.

The Slytherin wanted to point out that since Xavi is a Ravenclaw, he ought to know the basic charms early on. He was clearly judging, and he's fully aware of it, that's why he kept his mouth shut.

Ethan wanted to make a deal with the kid, just like what a normal Slytherin would do, but since he thought the task in his mind was not worthy of dealing with a firstie, he went on to tell the incantation. "Adhaero." he said, still grinning as he tugged on the stuck parchment he made.

"Do you want to give yours a go?" he'd love to see Xavi do it since he's being the confident 'Claw. Hopefully he won't get his hand stuck...

Xavi never knew what to think about older kids. On the one hand, he knew they'd lived longer than him, and he probably had something to learn from listening to or watching them. On the other hand, sometimes it seemed like they thought they knew everything, and really didn't know much.

Clearly Ethan knew more magic than Xavi. He'd just done a non-verbal spell. But the way he was almost laughing at the first year made Xavier wonder if it really was simple, and he was showing off.

Xavi had absolutely nothing to lose by trying the charm. The older boy obviously already thought he couldn't do it, and if he couldn't, nothing changed. His parchment was already held up by push pins, so he didn't put his hand anywhere near it. Instead, he pretended very hard that it was a casual thing, and internally concentrated intently with desire to make this work. He worried the look of the concentration would show up on his face, which he definitely didn't want.

Adhaero," he repeated, mimicking the earlier wand-motion of the boy. He wasn't going to go for the non-verbal thing just yet. That, he would practice alone in his dormitory.

This was the moment of truth. He carefully removed the push-pins, starting with the ones on the bottom. To his great surprise and delight, the parchment stayed up on the board, like Ethan's. He smiled triumphantly. "It wasn't hard at all," he lied confidently.

His confidence was pre-emptive, because as soon as he said the words the parchment fluttered to the floor.

Now, why was he not that confident when he was an 11-year old? The boy’s attitude made the older student question himself. Had he been missing out? When he was in his first year, he was an eager beaver to learn every single thing. He’d always believed that knowledge is power, and that nothing was wrong with trying out magic even if it were advance for him. He had the drive and ambition to master his powers as a wizard, but never had the amount of confidence to deliver it.

Ethan stood back as he crossed his arms and watched Xavi give the sticking charm a go. He was actually surprised to see his parchment stuck, because somewhere along the delivery of the spell, Xavi missed a crucial step.

Uh-huh.

The Slytherin kept quiet as the boy’s parchment fluttered to the floor. The whole school can go and stereotype the Slytherin standing there, but for the record, Ethan Mordaunt’s different. “Well, that’s a good start...” he said finally as he pushed himself from the wall and summoned the parchment on the floor. “Let’s try the spell again, shall we? You’ve got the intent and the pronunciation of the incantation right...but for the parchment to stick, you have to completely trace the paper’s edges with your wand while saying the incantation.” Ethan placed the parchment against the board, and traced the edges as he said, “Ahhhhdddd..." first edge, "hiiigghh..." second and third edge, "rrooooow....” fourth edge, and voila!

The Slytherin removed his hand, and tugged on Xavi’s parchment. Nope, not coming off. Ethan pointed his wand at it and unstuck it non-verbally. He’d teach that next if Xavi gets the first spell right. The sixth year grinned encouragingly at the boy, and handed his parchment. “Take two.”

Xavi's face turned bright red as his parchment hit the floor. He felt like an idiot. Trying so hard and being so casual all at the same time, only to have his spell fail. Ethan just stood there and watched it all unfold. Mistakes were okay and obviously expected, but a million times harder to swallow if there was an audience. Xavi liked the illusion that he had no problems and was intelligent and funny and all of those things. The illusion was difficult to keep when he made obvious mistakes in front of other people.

Take two. Xavier had watched carefully as Ethan demonstrated the spell, and now was positive he knew how to do it correctly, but also still highly embarrassed. Focus. Maybe better put one push-pin back in so he didn't have to hold the paper while he performed the spell.

The first year tacked the paper up at the very top and pulled his concentration/casual look back. Like it didn't matter. Because if he let on that it mattered to him, the mistake was a bigger deal. "Ahhhdddddd" he copied Ethan exactly, tracing one edge with the first syllable, "hiiigghh" sides two and three, "rrrooooow." He even finished with that strange way native English-speakers couldn't end words in just an 'o' without the 'w' sound after it.

Second time luck? Xavi pulled the push pin out of the parchment, glad that it seemed to be staying in place. He hesitated for a second, making sure it wasn't going to fall, then turned to Ethan with a triumphant smile. "Why'd you teach that to me?" he asked. Xavi was full of questions, his curiosity insatiable.

Ethan, a sixth or seventh year had come only to put up a notice. Instead he'd spent at least five minutes teaching Xavi a charm. It wasn't like he had an obligation, or even like they were a part of the same house. He wasn't sure which house Ethan was from, but he was certain he'd never seen the older boy in the Ravenclaw tower. Not that Xavi was objecting to learning, but why did Ethan bother?

Ethan didn’t need to be a face reader to judge his little friend to be the determined learner. If only Xavi could see himself, he’d be very impressed, unless he’s already impressed with himself? Nonetheless, it was a sight to see. It made tutoring and teaching younger students more fun, you know? The whimpering kind ticks him off. Like for example, Agatha? Yeah, he’d stay away from her as much as possible. He’d let their professors, or Cutty deal with her.

The Slytherin nodded along as Xavi traced his parchment, the wand movement and the pronunciation of the spell was on point. As expected, the Ravenclaw’s parchment was firmly stuck on the notice board. “Well done, Xavi.” Ethan looked down and returned the boy’s grin with his own, and gave the young kid a pat on the shoulder. And of course, just like any keen learner, there was a follow up question. The Slytherin simply shrugged. “Why not? You’re a wizard just like me, and you should know these things too. It’s not like, I’m the only one who’s supposed to know these things. Basic spells are supposed to be shared.” In other words, he’s being kind and generous, and cool. Besides, he’s all up for learning because he likes to learn new things too. Knowledge IS power. That, probably, was something that Slytherins liked to abuse.

Ethan looked at his notice again, pointed the tip of his wand against it, said “Avexis” non-verbally, and his parchment was released from the board. The Slytherin was quick to snatch the unstuck parchment in the air and offered it to Xavi. “Here, why don’t you stick my notice for me...and after that, I’ll teach you how to release it from the board.” I’m sure he wanted to learn the reverse too, yes?

Desperation. The beads of sweat forming on the man's brow stank of it.

Scampering this way and that, the Astronomy professor arrived at the stuent bulletin board to post yet ANOTHER missing notice about his beloved Pebbles. Dementors, Captain Hook, now a mysteries rocknapping....the circumstances surrounding Pebbles' disappearances were sinister indeed.

Removing a few old notices to make room for his, the Astronomy professor plastered a row of his poster riiiiiiight over the ridiculous large one about name correction. Or something. The man was not paying all that much attention to what was beneath his own work.



"Come home safe, Pebbles," he said, stroking her image on the poster gingerly for a moment before walking away and towards the staff room.

Leaving behind the slight dampness and humidity of the Slytherin dungeons, Lux made her way over to the student bulletin board...

...And was confronted by a whole bunch of posters for a missing Pebbles.

Poor Professor Flamsteed.

He must really miss his pet. Lux would really miss Arya if she ever went missing, so she had total sympathy for the man. She would do her best to help find his pet rock and return her to him. Hufflepuffs were great finders and maybe if her Housemates all banded together they would get the job done. A small part of her was afraid that whatever had taken her was the same thing that had attacked the Hippogriffs and killed the bird.

Stay strong, Pebbles.

Deciding to keep with the theme going on here, Lux placed her poster on the board right under the row that Professor Flamsteed had put up. Maybe this would help people pay double attention to the situation.

At least that was her hope.

From somewhere near by a loud pounding as on wood echos about the hall. A boy voice shouts.

"HELP! LET ME OUT!"
