Default Office of Professor Sabel Dakest

Once you have been invited inside the office, by the Professor (or a Professor), make yourself comfortable. There are two chairs opposite the main desk. Feel free to turn one about-face to the fireplace on the opposite side of the room, if you are more inclined.

Like the waiting area, the office reflects an outdoor feel, with various hardy plants littered about the bookshelves and on the desk. A fireplace gives a bit of extra heat to the room, while blanketing it in a comforting, smokey cedar scent. You may notice that the windows are occasionally charmed to reflect a mountain-scene, but this is often only when the Professor is feeling overtly nostalgic or on request from an over-eager student.

A few photos of a young woman and two children have been placed almost protectively on the desk, and on the bookshelf directly behind. The shelves themselves house naturalistic items, including a few abandoned bird nests, leaves, cones and nuts of varying species and rocks and pebbles of unique nature, either roughly hewed or eerily smooth. Each item has been placed strategically and tastefully among the shelves, which enhances the cabin-like feel of the office.

Books fill up the rest of the spaces on the shelf ranging in topic from defensive and offensive spells, magical combat, martial arts, magical and muggle law, wilderness survival, outdoor reference guides, tracking and a few others whose titles are unrecognizable. Perhaps it's age, or maybe it's intentional? Do you dare risking your fingers to find out?

--------------------------------------------

OOC: Please be sure you've posted out in the Seating Area, and have been invited in before posting here :-)

Please make sure you have read the Rules, before posting.

So, he did what he could do while he waited for the boy to organize his tongue, and motioned to one of the seats in front of the fireplace. Best he sit, before he hurt himself. And, you know what? He was going to sit too, because his head was already hurting trying to keep up, or back, with what the boy was trying to say. Five came before six, yes. Professors saw test scores, yes. He had seen the scores, yes. And his owl? He failed?

Sabel waited for something more, another piece of information or stumble through the concern that had brought him to his doorstep. But...that was it. He blinked for a moment, and the word was out before he could think to word it better. "So?"

"Sooo..." Actually, what was he trying to get at here? No well, he knew what, but he didn't know how to say what. Ja feel? "Is there still hope?" he didn't mean to blurt it out the way he did... And there was probably a better way to ask that, without being so desperate about it... But it just sorta happened. Ahem. Oops? On second thought, maybe he ought to give the poor man a better explanation?

"I mean... I was wondering if I could get your advice..." he started this time, going slower and with more tact. Trying to piece together what he was going to say... You know, before he actually said it. Ahem. Kind of a thing he needed to work on. Just gonna blame the whole 'speaking before thinking' thing on Gryffindor mannerisms. It was in his blood, okay? Not literally of course. He came from muggles. ANYWAYS. The defeated Gryffindor turned towards one of the chairs and took a seat, mussing his hair nervously. "Should I just drop the class now and forget about NEWTs?"

He wasn't even sure if he was allowed to continue taking the class anyways. But he figured maybe he could work really REALLY hard. Improve his magic enough to raise his grades, making some major fixes. It was too late to fix his OWL score now... But maybe it wasn't too late for the next set of exams? Defense wasn't just one of those classes you could forget about. It was important stuff, y'know? So he needed to know. Professor Dakest was a professional. Maybe he could just tell Zander that it wasn't worth pursuing. That he could just give it up. It was really the reason why he was here. To hear the cold, hard truth. He needed Professor Dakest to confirm everything that the exam score told him. That he could never get anywhere with this subject.

Sure, she was a goofball at time and tended not to always take things seriously, but... she was still learning. That didn't mean anything. Silently, Evie nodded and accepted the cookie and invitation. "I'll come after lunch," she said, a bit less disappointed at this meeting.

Speaking of the meeting, this seemed like a good place to close. Evie stood back up and linked arms with Sophie, pulling her with her. "Thanks, professor."

You've looked like you're gonna have some kinda meltdown ever since I started, like, psychoanalyzing you." Her grin was light and playful - she wanted him to RELAX. She wasn't a threat. She just wanted to be well-liked by him, but apparently she was trying too hard. "I'll stop actively trying to figure you out, but I can't help that you're interesting." She shrugged a shoulder. "Maybe y'should quit being so intriguing - s'hard for a Ravenclaw to resist," she offered him a gentler, but still cheeky sort of smile.

She was just TEASING him, okay? Trying to ease the tension in the room. Make him smile. Cool his jets.

He was a tough cookie, though. Very hard to figure out. It was a CHALLENGE, though - one that Sophie Brown couldn't pass up.

The comment about his figure made her giggle, and there was no way Sophie would ever turn down the offer of food, so when he offered her a cookie, she took a large bite. Talking about the articles with him made her feel weird now, so instead of commenting directly on that, she spoke through a mouthful of cookie, "I'anna 'uel 'ou, poo--" She swallowed. "I wanna duel you sometime, too, professor. Bet I could take you. Eves isn't the only one who got an Outstanding." She wiggled her eyebrows, challenging him, and hugged Evie's arm that had latched with hers.

"Yeah, thanks, professor." Their meeting hadn't been COMPLETELY awful, had it?

It was difficult to refrain from facepalming at Brown's hurried explanation. Dare he tell her that psychoanalyzing was a good way to give [i]any[i] Auror a hernia? Probably not. Dare he tell her that he wasn't trying to be interesting, in fact he was hoping for the opposite so such questions didn't crop up? Probably not.

No, it was probably just best to give a small smile and nod, and replace the desired 'right then' with a 'thanks'. That was best, and so that's what he did.

Thankfully, cookies were as good a distraction as any. Shacklebolt's response to his offer had him smiling a bit more, and he nodded to the offered time. "I'll be there."

Miss Brown's response got an arched eyebrow until she decided to clarify her cookie-speak. She wanted a duel too? The corner of one lip went up in a half-smile. "I'm sure we could have a go, and see what you've got. But we'll arrange for another time, other than today." Today he would focus on Shacklebolt and the other remaining duties of Professorhoodiom.

But that was it then? Merlin, what was he going to do with all these cookies?

Standing, Sabel offered them both a polite smile. "Thank you, for stopping by. I'll see you both later." He had a sneaking suspicion that Shacklebolt and Brown were latched quite securely onto one another.

SPOILER!!: Zeke! <3

It wasn't like he was saying they should hex each other when they weren't looking, set fire to the classroom and have a picnic... he just didn't see the point in making a fuss over a chocolate frog in his bag. Geeez. "Rules are made to be broken, they wouldn't be there otherwise." Obviously. Duuuhh.

Anyways, this conversation was not at all how he expected it to go down. The man was not his ally, and rules were not being negotiated, and as far as he could tell, the man would snitch on him to Emily any chance he got. He could already see it now, Howlers coming through his window every other day uttering words of disappointment. Could Howlers amplify death stares? He'd never actually received one from Emily before, but he imagined that it would be fierce, even if it said nothing.

Circe help him.

That being said, things weren't getting any worse, and perhaps they were in fact looking up somewhat. Was he just given permission to keep it out of sight? Was this a trick? A TRAP? "You're not planning on setting my bag on fire and using me to deter the others from doing it, are you? Cause if that's your plan I expect reimbursement." For everything. Bag, books, notes, dignity, THE LOT. It could be very costly. "But... if your offers legit, then I'll take it." No point making this experience all bad now, and he would like to have the upper hand on at least ONE thing before he left here today - just to make this venture worthwhile.

It seemed he just couldn't say the right things, which was no real surprise... but the sigh and neck rubbing had him concerned he might lose his ONLY remaining strike. Shoot!

Was this a trick question too? If so, he couldn't tell WHY.

"I dunno,"
he replied honestly. "I guess I don't see why you wouldn't fail me..." yeah, that was it. Deprive him of a trike, deprive him of an O. It sounded legit. He wasn't too too toooooooo concerned, because he knew that Emily knew how good he was at stuff, so if there was a huge drop in his grade then she would blame Sabel and not him - clearly..

..

But then, that got him thinking.

"And don't even think of giving me an E, I've been straight O's with this, I'm not getting anything less this year." Conviction, he had it. It was one of the few subjects he could speak so confidently about, and it was one of the few he cared about too.

Rules were made to be broken? That got a deadpan stare from Sabel. "I could say the same about bones."

Merlin it was a good thing conversations in offices weren't recorded for evaluation purposes. He was pretty sure someone would send him packing home in an instant. Though whether it would be Truebridge or Browne, he wasn't sure.

But the kid was slowly, gradually catching on. Even if he needed a bit more nudging in the right direction. "No. I'm planning on you not getting caught. If I do catch you though, I'll be the one expecting reimbursement."

It wasn't exactly a 'yes' break the rules, but it wasn't a 'no' either. He didn't consider himself a fool. Zeke and others would sneak food into the class. There was little he could do to stop that. All he cared about was not seeing it, in their mouths, hands or on their clothes. If anything, his 'non-committed' answer might help the kid learn a bit about discretion and stealth tactics. Something he had no moral qualms with. After all, really, they were just chocolate frogs.

The more important matter of concern, however, was Zeke's apparent perception of his intentions to flunk the kid. That got two raised eyebrows and a frown. "If you are as good as you say you are, and as I believe you to be, I don't see why you would expect me to fail you."

Because he was Emily's soon? Because he expected so much from him, and the boy was afraid he wouldn't deliver? He wasn't sure, and he was less sure that the kid would enlighten him on the nature of his concerns.

"I'll give you the grade which you earn. Nothing more, nothing less." He shrugged, trying to brush off the weight the topic seemed to carry. "But grades are hardly my greatest concern. I'm more concerned with what you take away from my class, what I'm able to pass on that you can make use of and that will help you in the future."

Would that blow the kid's mind? He certainly hoped not. The conversation already seemed touchy enough.

SPOILER!!: XD Zander! <3

Sabel blinked at the boy for a moment, not responding to any of the offered questions right away. The silence that extended between them might have been uncomfortable and unsettling, when combined with the stare of consideration he had fixed the kid with, but Sabel thought little of it.

Moving over to the chair opposite the boy, Sabel took a seat, resting back in it with a sigh. "Are you a quiter, Mr. Adair?"

Evie was pleased at how this meeting ended. Professor Dakest was willing to test her skills before deciding she was a failure and he was actually smiling about it, so maybe hea ctualy cared and was interested. Maybe Evie would realize that the MLE wasn't the place for her after all, but she at least wanted a shot. She wanted to try before deciding. She did NOT want Sophie to steal her thunder, though, which is what she was momentarily afraid of when she said she wanted to duel Dakest, too, but Evie was relieved when he said they would arrange for another time. Evie loved Sophie dearly, but she wanted HER moment, and she was selfish and wanted it just for herself. Sophie could show Dakest how cool she was another time.

Quietly, but with a smile, Evie made her way to the door. "Thanks, professor. See you tomorrow." Hand on the door, Evie pulled it open and tugged Sophie with her, excited for tomorrows duel.

Well, duhhhh, Dakest. Sophie had said SOME TIME, not I WANNA COME WITH EVIE. No, Sophie wanted separate time with Dakest, a time when they could meet up in the practice room without others around so he wouldn't have to be embarrassed when a sixteen-year old girl took him DOWN.

It wasn't in Soph's style to steal anyone's thunder anyway. She liked her friends to have their opportunities to shine, and she liked to have her own opportunity to shine, too. She fully intended for herself and Evie to take turns charming the pants off their attractive new professor and winning their way into his heart as his favorite students. Heheheheh.

"Byeeee, sir. Have a good life 'n thanks for the memories," was her choice of farewell, turning back to give him a little, delighted wave as she and Eves left.

What a cool guy.

For the record, yes the silence was uncomfortable. Very much so. Zander didn't even know what to do when Professor Dakest was staring at him like that. It didn't feel right to turn away though, so he just looked right back at the man. Erm... The Gryffindor almost felt like maybe he should just say something to break the extensive silence, y'know? Maybe it hadn't been such a good idea showing up here anyways. It was kind of an impulse decision to begin with.

He stayed quiet, however, figuring maybe the answer was a lot harder than he had though? Um.... The Gryffindor was almost relieved when his Professor finally said something, though uh... It wasn't really an answer to any of the questions he had just asked. And it sort of made him feel real terrible. "I-no, Sir..." Not only had he made a fool of himself but he totally sounded like a quitter. This was definitely not how he intended for this to go. Oops.

Sabel gave the two girls a nod and watched as they left his office. Nice enough, if a bit spirited. But then, what teenager wasn't spirited?

His eyes drifted to the cookies and let out a sigh. Now, how was he supposed to eat all of these?

No. Well, good. Because there might have been a few more, or less, words if the answer had been a disappointing 'yes'.

"Well then, Mr. Adair, there is hope." He considered the boy in a somewhat more relaxed manner.

Whatever advice he had to give was advice which the boy could have got on a bit of thinking. But perhaps he needed someone else to say it. Perhaps, he feared that grades were the be-all-end-all. Another breath left him as he hooked his ankle across his opposite knee.

"I'll let you in on a little secret. DADA, to me, is hardly about the marks. Personally, I'm more interested in supplying you with knowledge and practical skills that will assist you," and Merlin forbid should the need ever require it, "and possibly save your life one day. If that sounds like something which would benifit you, and if you are not a quitter, then my advice would be to not drop the class."

Buzzing into the vacant office, the man transformed quickly into his usual form and set to planting a few pieces of parchment in any drawers that he could get open and then a book right in the middle of the target's desk. Once he had done so, he looked around of anything that may be useful to the Master or the article waiting to be finished back in his office. His blank stare fell on the pictures of a woman and two children and were instantly imprinted into his memory.

Having completed the Master's bidding, he transformed back into a mosquito and flew away.

Sabel closed the door as he followed in behind the young girl. His eyebrows went up at the mention of the type of cake and the fact that it was food. Didn't these kids know not to feed an Auror food?

He schooled his expression quickly as she faced him, giving her a grateful smile instead. "I'm quite partial to coffee. Thank you. Would you like to share a piece as we...discuss?"

Making a motion to one of the chairs, Sabel took up a spot across from her, seating himself. "What about the lesson were you hoping to discuss?"

It was late by the time he made it back to his office. Very late. Ridiculously late.

So much so that he almost didn't bother turning the lights on and nearly made a b-line straight for the chairs. But there was something that had him pausing in the middle of the room, the hairs on the back of his neck standing up and his wand was in his hand before he even noticed it. Something, was different. Something, had changed. And without his permission.

While there were wards and charms about, and none of them had been triggered, they were not as extensive as they had been at the Ministry. Last thing he had needed was a student loosing a finger. And while they were still in place, none tripped or broken, there was no doubt in his mind that someone had been inside during his absence.

The lights quickly went on, and while the new book on his desk caught his attention, he was more interested in making sure that the infiltrator wasn't still lurking about. A quick revilio later, and he relaxed, only somewhat.

With a deep crease to his brow, Sabel moved over to his desk and carefully picked up the book. It got a once over, before he realized that his hand was trembling, shaking even. It was dropped abruptly, his drawers searched and every inch of his office for things that shouldn't be there. Truth be told, he was tempted to burn it all just to make sure nothing that wasn't his had been left behind. To make sure nothing had been charmed against him.

By the end of it, the planted papers and book were in one pile on his desk, the photos of his family and friends in ashes on the other side, and a plethoria of wards and charms on every entryway to his office: door, window, fireplace. Had his anger not been so extreme, he might have found enough sense and thought to curse himself a few times over for being so stupid. As it was, he snatched up the books and paper and left the office without another second to spare.

Was it something he said? Zeke stared at Sabel's facial expression.. waiting for words... and there they were! Bones were made for breaking too? Uhhhhh. "Yeah, I guess, AND they're easily mended," he grinned. See, no harm done, well okay harm WOULD have been done, but it would all be over in a jiffy.

So no setting fire to his things and being all YOU'RE BREAKING MY RULES RAWR? He was totally cool with this, cause there was no need to be dramatic, they could handle this like men, not like girls. And as for Sabel seeking reimbursement. Fat chance of that. He didn't say anything to that though, nope, it was best to just let this part of their conversation die quietly before the opportunity of chocolate frogs in his bag was taken off the table.

It was clear by those eyebrows and the lines in his forehead that Sabel wasn't pleased with his notion of unfair flunking. Whoops? Needless to say, Sabel's words didn't do anything to really inspire confidence, the man was an unknown entity, he was NOTHING at all what he had imagined the man to be as a teacher. He was not his friend anymore, he was just another Professor. "Some things happen without reason, so anything is in the realm of possibility." Yep. That's how he saw it.

But since this was going nowhere, Zeke nodded. "I get what I earn, got it," he nodded some more. And just when he thought they'd reached the limit of this conversation too, he got a spiel about life lessons as opposed to grades, or something of a sort. "That's all well and good, but if I want to get places in life I need good grades, and Emily will kill me if I don't get them." Okay, KILL, might have been an overreaction, but it would metaphorically kill him to see her disappointed in him, and that was a heavy heavy weight to carry.

...

Anyway. Did things get awkward? He felt they were awkward.

"I should go... I've got study and things to do." Yes, study, go and stick that in your owl to Emily! "Have a good rest of the day and things," he added, rising from his seat and shuffling to the door.

But Professor Dakest had really BEEN THERE, y'know? He did the actual DADA stuff as a real life job. Just needed to hear that maybe he wasn't gonna fail at it in a practical sense.

So the Gryffindor perked up a bit in his chair, though not doing so consciously. He looked at his new Professor carefully, trying to focus really REALLY hard on what the man was trying to say. Incase he had to write anything down to remember later. The thing about the marks though, that put a small smile on his face. Well this was AWESOME! Romanos probably cared about the marks, Zander was sure. And Dakest was right... The stuff behind the marks was probably more important anyways. How come he hadn't thought about that before!? Well okay, he had thought of that before. But. Well. Dakest was THE Professor, y'know?

Anyways....

"I'm rubbish at the practical skills too, Professor..." He widened his eyes quickly before continuing, "But I want to get better, sir." Not just that but he NEEDED to get better. Especially if he was planning to take NEWTs and oh wait, not thinking about the marks. Right. "Is there any way you think's best? You know.. For practicing?"

Hugo walked into Dakest's office and turned around, "Professor..." he made a quick pause "What's up?" yes, what's up?. Sure he remembered because his answer had something hidden that Hugo, for some reason, needed to know.

Should he say broken rules could be mended too? Probably not. The kid was incredibly smart, and while he wore the red and gold of Gryffindor, he had the blue of a Ravenclaw saturating him. Idly, Sabel wondered how hard of a time the sorting hat had with placing this one.

So, to be safe with how his words could be used, Sabel gave the kid a slight nod. "So they are." Sometimes. Depending. But no need for such troublesome things.

And then their conversation seemed to take a turn for the less appealing. It wouldn't be fair to say that he tried to do things within reason, because Merlin knew that was a skill he was still learning and Emily knew some stories of when he'd failed to even grasp the concept. Still, it was a dire outlook on life, and got a questioning frown from him.

"I'm sure your mother will be proud of you no matter the grades you get, so long as you put your most earnest foot forward." Something he was getting the impression was a habitual response of Zeke. He was sure Emily was proud of the kid regardless of what foot went forward. The fact that she had a kid was still mind-boggling, but it spoke volumes.

Settling back in his chair, Sabel watched the boy start to head out, a puzzled thought creasing his brow even more. "You sure your mom didn't tell you to keep an eye on me?" Because as much as he could report to Emily as a teacher, so Zeke could report to her.

SPOILER!!: Zander!

Well this was a nice change to some of the other students whom he had told marks weren't as concerning as the lessons behind them. It was refreshing to see Adair perk up so quickly, heartening to see the foul and fearful mood lift like a veil.

A small smile touched Sabel's lips as he shrugged one shoulder. "The best way of practicing?" His smile grew a little at the corner of his lip, an amused smirk directed at the irony, rather than at the boy. "Is to practice."

Really, he should quit his day job and become a philosopher. Such sound and insightful responses he was able to give to the students that came to him for help. Hardly. But he wasn't sure what else he could say.

"Start with the basics where you are having difficulty, master them. Then, move onto the next. Take it step by step. And don't give up, simply because one try fails or multiple tries fail. Doesn't mean you can't do it, just means it'll take time."

Was that any better? He wasn't sure. For him, it had never been a question of if, but when. He couldn't help but wonder what question it was that guided Adair.

Sabel was in the process of closing the door, when that question came again. That same question Foster had asked on their first official meeting. It had him pausing, wondering if maybe there were a few loose screws somewhere and being on the other side of the door was safer.

But the addition to the question had him turning, considering the boy with a mixture of curiosity and restrained amusement. Had he really.......it was clear from the expression on his face, he had.

Clearing his throat, Sabel closed the door fully and found he couldn't help himself. "Why don't you give me what you think the answer to your question is, first? What, Mr. Foster, is up?"

Placing the cake on the table beside his chair, Sabel paused briefly as he stole a glance at the young girl, finding her expression to match the sincerity in her voice. A smile touched his lips as he settled back in the chair.

"I'm very glad to hear it, Miss Ashcroft. Though I think the success can be attributed to you and your fellow classmates. You all did extremely well, and you should be proud of your accomplishments."

He hesitated, drumming his fingers on the armrest. "Can I ask what career you are thinking of?"

"Well, Auror comes to mind but I need to be really confident and capable with my magic so...maybe something like...Ministry of Magic Witch Watchers. I'm Muggleborn so I know my way around Muggle London."

Now she was even more confused. Hopefully, Dakest could help.

It took a great deal of effort to restrain the sigh that threatened to take over his whole countenance. Auror. Another one. Why were there so many kids interested in becoming an Auror?

An annoying part of reason told him it was likely for the same reasons he had chosen the career, and that good intentions were likely at the heart of it. But personal experience had him disliking such reasonable thoughts. Professionalism had him repressing both.

He nodded, his attention picking up at the Witch Watchers. Wasn't a choice of career he had heard often. Sabel glanced over at the cake, a small smile touching the corners of his lips. "Not chef or baker extraordinaire?" Of course, he was only joking.

In all seriousness though, he could try to be helpful.

Rubbing his chin, Sabel considered Ashcroft. "Confidence and capability comes with time and practice. Not something out of the realm of possibility, and admittedly an ongoing lesson through life. I wouldn't let those be a deciding factor of your career."

He hesitated. "But you are right, you don't have to decide now. Though it is a good idea to get a sense of where you might like to go. I find, looking to one's passions and interests is a good start." Which, with her, sounded like it might be in the realm of helping people.

Cilla laughed softly at Dakest's suggestion of baker. "I think I would stick to baking as a hobby."

She listened carefully to the professor's words. She did like what he was saying.

"Well, I do like helping people. I appreciate the advice, sir, thank you. However, I must not keep you any longer.."
she said as she began to rise from her chair.

It was basically what Sophie Brown said, 'cause Merlin she's ridiculously smart. But that really wasn't any new information. Obviously. So moving on.

Yes, the best way of practicing. He nodded his head in confirmation, head tilting slightly at the sight of his Professor's small smile.... Is to practice? Oh. Well--just oh. Man. Zander should've seen that one coming to be completely obvious. It was so simple but so completely brilliant? What even. Man, this guy really DID know what he was doing!! Heh.

"That's uh, that's really good advice, Professor." You know, he had spent all this time trying to make things REALLY complicated when really, the answer was quite simple. So what if he couldn't do a patronus, there were simpler forms of defense that he could work on in the mean time. And you know, the more he thought about it... The more he realized that maybe he could've gotten this information a lot sooner. If only he had gone to talk to Professor Romanos. But then again, it was quite awkward around her still considering the fact that he had accused her of being a Cold One and trying to take over the entire school.

Ah. Good times, good times.

"Thank you, sir!" well, that went a lot better than he had planned. And a lot faster too. Was he allowed to leave then? Because Zander was pretty terrible with gaging this part of the conversation. Goodbyes were always the weirdest parts...

Pity. They could use more bakers in the world. Might make for a happier populace. Food did bring about a great deal of joy after all.

But that was it then? Sabel blinked, surprised that there were no follow-up questions. Though, they had both agreed that it wasn't imperative to set a course right now. He gave Ashcroft a nod and stood with her. "It's a good start. Let me know if you have any further questions."

Even if it was about Aurors. He would provide it, albeit a bit reluctantly.

Thank you for the visit, Miss Ashcroft. And the cake." It and its red box got a nod of recognition.

Sabel couldn't help but arch an eyebrow at the kid's response. Was he being honest, or smart on the lip? Really, he couldn't fault him for the later. The advice was very basic and not entirely helpful. And well, he'd been a wise cracker when he was a student, so not too much he could say against it without being a right hypocrite.

But it certainly did make things awkward, because what did one say in follow-up to such a thing?

A nod seemed to suffice, especially given it came in time with Adair's gratitude. For what, Sabel wasn't entirely sure, but he mustered up a small smile all the same. "Anytime."

Anytime he wanted the most basic of advice. He would be here. Right then.

Pushing himself from his chair, Sabel extended his hand. "Feel free to stop by any time, Mr. Adair."

Zander was quite pleased with how this all went, though uh, he did have terribly quite low expectations. He had been expecting the ultimate worst, y'know? But now he sort of had hope. He just wanted to DO stuff. Actually no, he really just wanted to go find Cutty to buy some chocolate frogs, but this meeting did sort of help fuel the fire.

So overall, as embarrassing as it was, Zander was glad he stopped by. So he gave the man a small smile as he stood up, following suit, and extended his own hand. Giving Professor Dakest the best handshake he could muster (which was still a work-in-progress, by the way), he nodded. "I will, Sir!" And then he was off. Off to find a young business man with an incredible selection of sweets. But just before he left, he turned around to address his DADA Professor one more time. "Have a great day, sir!"

And then he was out the door and ready to take on the WORLD. Nah, just kidding. But maybe the next time.

Like today. They got a stomp-stomping as he made his way towards the waiting area, half-debating taking a seat in front of the fire and snacking on a few of the untouched s'mores that seemed to have earned the students caution.

He couldn't determine whether he was surprised or expectant of the student that lingered by his door, and with a sigh he dispelled all notions of s'more snacking. This one looked serious.

"Miss Greyvson. I hope I didn't keep you waiting long." Shrugging out of his coat, he moved to his door and pushed it open for the both of them. "Please come in."

OOC: Feel free to post here or in Sabel's office

Puck glanced up when she saw Professor Dakest sure, she was about to grab a smore but they could do that later right? When he apologized for keeping her waiting she just shook her head and smiled, “No not at all I just got here myself really,” she admitted. “I didn’t want to get too winded running down all the stairs,” she chuckled and followed him into the office.

It was nice, and the view outside of the windows was beautiful but really, didn’t they see that almost every day? “I like your office Professor,” she smiled and simply stepped a bit further into the office. “But to get to the point of this ugh, drop in?” She shrugged her shoulder slightly, sure she wanted to ask about the articles and everything but there was more. She also didn’t want to be weird about things…but, this wasn’t just for her it was for the kids under her care in a sense.

“I wanted to ask about getting more specific training and if there would be a possibility for that? Considering that the Cult of Walpurgis has been ‘reported’ on recently,” sure, she made a face when she said reported because those articles seemed so prejudiced. “and…well, considering in class you were teaching us how to defend ourselves it doesn’t seem that you actually are a follower but I could be wrong,” she was standing there looking him straight in the eye for any sign that her assumption could be right or wrong.

She hoped she wasn’t wrong, she didn’t want to have to tell Chelsea she was wrong…or Amur well, that she was right to eye everyone so scrupulously.

Well, at least the kid was leaving with more confidence than he had entered with. It was the very definition of progress, though there was certainly more that could be made.

Still, baby steps.

Sabel returned the handshake and a polite smile, nodding at Adair as he left the room. For a moment he stood where he was, debating what task he should tackle next. The ever impending paperwork won out, and with a flick of his wand he closed the door and moved around his desk to start on his task.

"Good excercise though, if you're ever looking for it." He vaugley recalled one year where a day was spent running up and down stairs. The more vivid parts of that memory were tucked away.

Moving into his office, Sabel paused at his desk to shuffle a few papers into neater order. He glanced up at the compliment, sparing Greyvson a smile. "Thank you."

The smile held in place until the Cult was mentioned, and then it gradually slipped away for the plain neutrality that had started to become a common expression of his. Of course the students would read the article. Of course they would be interested, curious and possibly fearful. Young minds were impressionable, as were protective parents. He couldn't hold it against her or any other student for being concerned.

He brushed the edges of a few pages together. "So, what you are really asking Miss Greyvson, is if it's still safe to learn from me, or if there is some merit that I might be training you all for some planned army."

Looking up, he met her gaze with a steady one of his own, though the light of some morbid humor around the whole thing touched his eyes. "What I teach you, and what I can teach you, is based solely on my experience and knowledge as an Auror, working for the Ministry. If I was part of the Cult, or intending to do their bidding, I can assure you it would be Law Enforcement that would revealing such a thing through my prompt arrest. Not the Prophet."

Would that settle it? Or at least some of it? He was no fool to know that words only went so far. The rest was up to time and proven action and character. Something the students hadn't yet got from him. Timing was just, poor.

"There is always the possibility for more specific training." His voice dropped a little bit, some resignation to it as he shrugged. "It's up to you and others if you want to accept that possibility, and pursue it."

So he liked that she had complimented the office, well, that was good. It had made him smile which of course had fallen the instant she had mentioned the cult, but that was understandable wasn’t it? She was simply yet another stubborn Prefect.

“I’m not asking if it is safe to learn from you,” she informed standing stronger. “Though that would be a smart question to ask I don’t think anyone in league with the ‘cult’ would provide an honest answer if I were to outright ask them if they were in league with them.” She informed him as she stood there. “I am asking about how to improve my defense against the dark arts skills because I don’t want anyone to get harmed by the cult while I am a prefect here.” She informed him.

“That, and I want to do well on my NEWTs next year.” She added the last bit with a bit of a smirk. “I do believe you though Professor, and I just think it would be good to actually learn how to defend ourselves considering how our school has tended to do with OWL and NEWT scores in Defense Against the Dark Arts specifically.” She informed and stood there, hopefully he got that she wasn’t against him. She didn’t think he was a cultist. He didn’t seem like someone harboring a skeleton riddled closet though; everyone’s closets were filled with skeletons really.

Sabel gave the girl a departing smile, and only once the door closed behind her did he let it falter. His gaze turned to the cake, still sitting in its box. Still untouched.

Placing a finger on the side of it, he pushed in around, looking for some tell-tale flaw in its packaging. "Now what, am I going to do with you?"

His first and foremost thought was to offer some sort of curt, flippant reply to the girl's seeming naivety. Something along the lines of asking for lessons how to defend against a Cultist, against an accused Cultist. Her further explanation, and admission, however, stilled his tongue though kept him of a leery mindset. Anyone could say they believed anyone. Motives were key.

For a long moment, he let silence reign between them, carefully considering the girl across from him while all at once feeling the pang of guilt of being so suspicious of one so young. Did he really think the students would do him harm, or spy on him? The terrible weight of that answer had him sighing in fatigue.

"While I appreciate your steadfast devotion, Miss Greyvson, but it is not your responsibility to protect the students against the Cult." He wanted to tell her that it was simply something beyond the head of students, but he couldn't bring himself to be so dismissive of the characteristic Gryffindor bravery. Or was it stupidity? "That being said, I admire your vigilance."

Settling himself to perch on the edge of his desk, he rotated a pen by his side absently. "Normally I don't toot the horn of grades and test scores, but today I'm going to tell you that they should be of greater concern to the students than the Cult. The papers have a way of.......riling things up and twisting truths. Best to be skeptical of them."

He tilted his head. There was her first lesson against the dark arts. Never simply believe.

"In regards to improving your skills, I'll tell you what I told your co-prefect. Practice. Again and again. If there is an area you are struggling in, or want to test your skills, I am more than happy to help. And I'm sure you can find great lessons in teaching your classmates what you know, and learning from them, be it dueling or proper instruction." Such a useful man he was. "But there is more to the defense against dark arts than simply magic. Much of it is mindset. What your thoughts are, how they work, where they go. How you handle situations and solve problems. Some people might tell you your best defense is a strong spell and a good wand, but Dark Wizards know that the easiest way to unravel the strongest wizard, is by finding a flaw, even a hairline fracture, in his mental state."

All it took was one pin in the crack, and the whole wall could come crashing down.

"And the Cult, Miss Greyvson, loves mind games."

Text Cut: For Kath and Dani! Separate TL from all the above
Assuming they met at the Gate and made their way to his office

The walk had been quiet, an uneventful stewing of individual thoughts and intentions behind neutrally masked faces as the company made their way from the gates of Hogwarts, through the corridors and to his office. It was a blessed relief that he no longer had to suffer the climb of the moving staircase. Something that would surely have provoked some break in the weighting silence of the three men.

Sabel stood on no accord as he entered his office, leaving the door open for the reporter and Auror to follow through. Introductions had been made, and handshakes had been exchanged. His arm still ached from the restraint required to keep his grip civil in light of the reporter's strange smile. So many things he wanted to say to the man who had dragged his name through imagined mud as well as he dragged his inked quill across the bloody papers.

Moving around his desk, Sabel removed the wards and pulled open the top drawer. The bookshelf behind him reflected none of the joyful memories it had previously, each picture removed and unreplaced, the spines of the books appearing more cold and glaring than he could ever remember. Even the natural nicknacks placed about seemed drab without their still-framed counterparts. The two books and the stack of flyers made a jarring impact into the silence as Sabel dropped the Cult items on his desk.

He flopped into his chair with similar dejection, motioning to the infuriating evidence as his eyes went to the Auror. "These are all that were found in my office and the Headmistress's office. We searched both thoroughly several times, though you're free to do your own search."
