While Hogwarts' firsties are heading for the school via the "firstie" boats, the rest of the students will be taking the usual carriages back to the school.
These are the same carriages that have been used for years and years. They are round, black, and seat about four students. They also appear to move along on their own, with an invisible something inside the harnesses...

"Oh yeah, cool, thanks," he mused. Standing back, Zeke gestured for Zhenya to hop in first, cause... that was the right thing to do, right? Ladies first and all that jazz? However, he wasn't able to say as much because the next thing he knew, his eyebrows were disappearing into his fringe. Say what now? "Seen someone die?" he repeated, processing this information.
Eventually he regained the ability to move and speak and he climbed into the carriage with new-found energy. "I'm Zeke, hi," he added after Zhenya's self-introduction. New girl, or at least she was new to him. "So, how does that work? The seeing people die and seeing thestrals thing?" HOW WAS THAT A THING?!
Zhenya nodded to Zeke, who seemed quite excited about all this new information. "Yes, together of course! I'd like to know more about them, actually," she added. She did, really. She hadn't studied them, all she knew was just what she had mostly overheard from others. But it would be interesting to find out why they could only be seen buy those who have witnessed death and how they were created. That sort of thing.
Aww, he was very sweet. Zhenya climbed on up, and was on standby in case he needed a hand getting up. But no, he was fine. She was interested to see, actually, whether he said anything, or whether the new girl would, about their stories. Could the girl actually see them? She wasn't sure. She opened her mouth to say something when she saw his eyebrows basically disappear. Was it from some kind of shock or grief? No, no, he recovered quickly and started asking more questions. She too looked towards the girl, wondering if she knew more information. Could she explain it?

Trying to ignored ow hungry she was, Lux searched for a carriage, finally spotting two familiar faces and making a beeline towards them. "Hey, Zhenya. Hey, Zeke. Mind if I join you guys?" Oh, and there was a new face as well! "Hi, I'm Lux."

She wanted food. And then sleep in her, yes HER, bed.
And then the girl mentioned the death thing…damn. Ooh well, she hoped Zeke wouldn't feel the need to spill his story if he didn't want to. She sometimes even got a bit teary when she spoke of her grandparents. Sometimes…
But quickly, she looked back at the girl and said "Hi, by the way. I'm Zhenya," cheerfully. Yay, another new person to talk to!

Oh good they didn't fancy walking to Hogwarts from Hogsmeade station. Relieved when they got into the carriage with her, she smiled when the Slytherin girl introduced herself. Zhenya. And funnily enough, the boy's name also began with a Z; was this a thing or something? "Tia," she introduced back. No last name necessary considering they didn't because apparently students were on a first name basis at this school.
"I'm not really sure, but i know I can't see them. I've just read about them." Well a little bit anyway; there wasn't terribly much information out there about them. "I think you have to have witnessed death at least once though ..." She glanced between the two of them, "Wait, you both can see them then? What do they look like? Are they really bony and skeletal-like , as I only read about?"
And before she could inquire too much on what it was like to see them, they had someone else join the carriage; a Hufflepuff judging from her robes which meant three houses were represented in this carriage. Which also meant, hopefully, that her brother was right about her being Ravenclaw thing. Or maybe she was just overthinking things, but hopefully not this time. Lux; not a Z name. "Nice to meet you, Lux. I'm Tia." She said happily. "So what year are you three in?" Maybe some other fourth years besides her and the mystery girl from Malkins.

Success, that's what this was. His first day/night back at school and he was already making the most of it. Because yes, spending HOURS at the library with Zhenya was totally making the most of it. Totally. So worth the study time. He even decided that sitting in a carriage wasn't so bad, it was even cooler than the boats from last year, cause he had good company. Not that his company last year had been bad, no, it had been awesome, but... but... Zhenya.
"Nice to meet you," he replied to Tia. That was an easy enough name to remember. Three letters. T. I. A. Yep. Their carriage was almost full, and he supposed it wouldn't start moving off until it was, so it was a good thing Lux turned up when she did. "Hey Lux, had a good summer?" he asked conversationally, pulling his knees in a bit in case they took up too much room. Boy legs.
Tia was, interesting, and it was cool that she knew so much even though she couldn't see the thestrals. The death thing was a little awkward, but not as bad as it could have been. It was kind of nice that he wasn't alone in seeing them then. The seeing death thing was easy enough to understand, but he wanted to know how that meant they could see them, like, HOWWWWW did it work?! He wanted to know. Perhaps Professor Thompson knew? "I can, yeah," he answered with a nod, "they look starved and half dead, and... kinda creepy." The white eyes and the bones, definitely creepy, but creepy COOOOOOL.
Conversation about dead and semi-dead things wasn't all that fun though, so he was happy enough to explore a new avenue of conversation. "I'm a second year, how 'bout you?"

Abby had made her way off of the platform having lost tyler again and she knew that she would see him at the feast but she had to get into the carriages to get up to school so she jumped into the first free carriage and waited for the carriage to move and head up to the castle, Abby was all excited about being back at school

Hady was just about to make her way forward towards one of the empty carriages when someone smacked into her from behind making her stumble just slightly forward. Catching her balance quickly as the girl didn't run into her to hard she spun around to see whom it was.
A small blonde girl about the same size and age as her met her gaze and already she was appologising. Laughing softly Hady somewhat waved the girls appology off with one hand. "It's alright things happen when you're excited. I'm Hady." She offered by way of greeting, holding her cat a bit closer to her. "And this is Hagan."

Tia! "Nice to meet you, Tia," Zhenya said. After Tia spoke of her knowledge of the Thestrals, and asked if they could see them, she looked to Zeke, then back to Tia. "Yes, I can see them. Well they… they look a bit like a skeletal reptile winged horse… thing," she looked at the beast, trying to find a way of describing it.
"I'm fifth," Zhenya said, then quickly corrected herself, "No, I'm sixth!" Gosh, and just like that she was a sixth year! Golly gosh, it was so surreal.

"My mum and I play a game with these," he added into the silence, "when you eat one, you give the other person three clues as to what your flavour is. if they guess it, they get to pick the grossest looking bean for you, if they get it wrong, you pick the grossest looking bean for them and so on." At the end of his little story, he shrugged, "We think it's cool."

Yep. Good one Zeke. Way to sound cool in front of a bunch of older girls. Reaaaallll smooth. And speaking of smooth, his bean flour definitely was.
Stepping off the train Hady watched the first years walk towards the boat before her gaze swept over to the carriages. She knew that was where she was supposed to go, her father having told her many many times before.
Shifting her cat in her arms she ran a hand gently over his head. Making her way towards the carriages her eyes found the horses pulling them instantly. Father had told her of them too. Hearing about them and seeing them though is very different! A quick look of surprised flashed across her eyes before it was replaced by a calm look. There was noway she was going to act all crazy about it.
Not today. Today she'd be calm and cool.

In fact, Ophelia was SO interested in the carriage that she MIGHT have bumped into the person in front of her, holding a cat. Ooops.
"Sorry! Was completely not watching where I was going!" This was good time for conversation, right? "I'm Ophelia by the way. And I've been bumping into people a lot lately."
Nicole stepped off the train with her pet cat following close by, glad to have her feet on firm ground at last. She looked up and down the Hogsmeade platform and tried to see if any of her friends were nearby. She knew she was supposed to take the carriages instead of the first year boats, but the thought of boarding one alone scared her.
She saw two girls about her age talking in front of some carriages and approached them. "Hello," Nicole said, picking up her cat seeing as one of the girls was holding one too. "Do you mind if I sit with you for the ride to the castle?"

Zhenya was glad the subject seemed to be moving on from the Thestrals. Just the death part, really. She was all for talking about the creatures, just not why she could see them. And thankfully it hadn't yet come up.
"Oh that sounds fun," she commented on Zeke's game with his mother. She waited to see if he would start, or if he was just telling them, but then he did start. She had a quick think… well, it might be a few things but only one flavour popped into her mind, "Butterbeer?" she guessed. Hopefully she didn't have to eat a foul tasting one.

She looked up and down the Hogsmeade platform and tried to see if any of her friends were nearby. She knew she was supposed to take the carriages instead of the first year boats, but the thought of boarding one alone scared her.
She saw two girls about her age talking in front of some carriages and approached them. "Hello," Nicole said, picking up her cat seeing as one of the girls was holding one too. "Do you mind if I sit with you for the ride to the castle?"
Just as she was introducing herself to the other girl another girl their age walked over carrying her cat. Eying her for a moment Hady gave a small nod of her head to her. "I'm Hady, you can join us if you like." Sure why not. There was enough room in the carriage.
Gesturing with her hand at the two girls Hady quickly made her way up onto the carriage and sat down on one of the seats setting Hagan down on her lap. Her cat not even noticing the other cat at all.

He hadn't expected anyone to say it sounded fun, cause, after he said it, it sounded pretty lame - only it wasn't, he knew it wasn't. Furthermore, he hadn't expected anyone to play along, so when Zhenya did, he couldn't help but beam.
"That's a pretty good guess," he replied, his brows arched, impressed. "But nope, it's caramel. I'd have said caramelised instead of burned but that would have been giving it away." And that wouldn't have been any fun at all. Still, he didn't particularly want to give Zhenya of all people a nasty tasting bean... and the worst he had in his hand wasn't so bad.
"Here," he said, presenting her with a white bean that was slightly translucent around the edges. It could either be really good, like coconut... or bad, like candle wax. It was hard to tell with these things.

Nicole smiled gratefully. Normally, she did not mind being alone, as she had her cat Diamond and books to accompany her, but now that she was at Hogwarts, she wanted to make friends. She was not going to tell anybody that she was scared of being in a carriage all on her own.
"Thanks. Nice to meet you, Hady. I'm Nicole," she said, directing the last sentence to both girls. "And this is Diamond," Nicole gestured at her cat. Hady's cat did not seem to notice Diamond at all, and he purred slightly to get its attention. Shrugging, the second year followed Hady into the carriage and took a seat next to the girl.
