Duh, it was so obvious looking back on it.

Since she was running lower on time, Lux decided to cut things short so she would ask ONE more question unless anything he told her made her come up with other ones. "I was also wondering for the amounts... is it best to stick with a number like seven for the mundane ingredients, and use a less powerful number for the magical ones?" Honestly she didn't know much about numbers and power, but she did know that seven was MAGICAL.

Cosgrach grinned at her. He wished they could create potions on how cool the ingredients were, too. He didn't say anything else on the matter, though, because she was already asking him another question and he mentally repeated all of her ingredients again.

"I think... go with 7 for all to strengthen the effect" he said in the end. "And maybe... we can also strike out chocolate, because we're already adding a chocolate frog. But that's..." he paused again to clearly think, "we'll look at that during the experiment. If it's too much, we won't add it."

Did she have more questions?

The Ravenclaw pulled another one of the large chocolate sweets out from her bag. "Would you like a Chocoball?" she offered.

Cosgrach directly sat down on his throne as he couldn't stand on his feet anymore. It hurt, you see, and he gestured at her to sit on an armchair if she wished to.

"I'm fine, thank you," he said amiably. No need to scare her away now. "How about you?" Was that... chocolate? Was it a simple act of courtesy, or should he be suspicious? Hmm... she looked innocent enough... he held out his hand for her to give it to him.

"You didn't have to!" he casually said, "I'd still help ya." In short: answer if this is bribery or not, girl.

...Oh. Awkward. She hadn't meant to insult Zander's best friend - okay, yes she had - but she quickly added on, "But I know despite all his problems, he means a lot to you, and... and he was making progress and trying and... you were seeing changes in him. And that hurts, m'sure, that you got to see the good in him and see that there was more to him than the attitude he gave off in classes and stuff." There was a pause, and then, "But if you were the same kind of friend to him as you are to me, there's no way you were a bad friend to him, Zanderpander. You're the best friend. S'not your fault. Not even a little."

Feeling his eyes starting to betray him, he quickly reached his hand (the one that Sophie didn't have in her hold) up to them and rubbed a bit. Effectively making the redness even worse, but it did help him in holding back any tears. "I tried to always have his back and he always had mine. And now he's gone. And I don't even know what he's going to do anymore."

Sophie was right... also wow, harsh, but she was right. And she also knew how to talk. Cosgrach was glad she was here too, to complete his words. Once she was done, he turned his eyes back at the boy, then sighed at what he said. On the contrary, Kevin had more chance than anyone else, and this was the problem: he'd only changed the tiniest bit, which wasn't enough.

"But, Zander," he softly said, "he didn't try hard enough. He always thought that he could never be expelled..." But he proved everyone that yes, he could. He placed a hand on Zander's other shoulder. "I bet Sophie got your back, too. And Puck. And Professor Flamsteed, as well as me. You're not alone." Seriously, he wasn't. "His family will hire tutors. Home schooled, as you may call it. Then, he'll go to a university, or get in the Ministry." Fair enough?

And surely that much was evident as he struggled to explain everything. Words were hard. He looked up again at his Potion's Professor as the man tried to talk some sense into him. Kevin did make progress. He absolutely made progress. Why was that much so hard for everyone else to see?

And then Sophie Brown happened and that shut Zander up for a good bit.

"That's the thing. No one even gave him a chance," the Gryffindor took a deep breath, letting his gaze fall back down to the ground again. Maybe he should've had more of the sweets? He wasn't even sure what he was upset about anymore. A combination of everything maybe? Like when you go through the day and everything just builds up on top of each other and all the sudden you start crying because you ran out of butterbeer. And then everyone thinks you're ridiculous because you're crying over a mug of butterbeer, when really you're just upset about everything else and the butterbeer was just a tipping point. Like that. Except, he wasn't crying over butterbeer and he wasn't even crying, well, yet anyways.

It was everything. Constant nightmares bringing him back into the forrest, watching Gregoire. The expulsion of one of his best friends. Missing his family. Getting the badge taken away. Getting it back without much explanation. Everything.

No one gave him a chance? Sophie tried not to visibly react to that - but she, in fact, KNEW that Kevin had been given plenty of chances, time and time again, and he'd blown those chances. She didn't have a clue how to respond to the next thing the Gryffindor said, so she just let her gaze fall upon their hands and stroked his with her thumb comfortingly.

Luckily, Culloden was good with words this time, and she smiled at him telling Zander that he had him. That was sweet, wasn't it? The man who loved to poke fun at the kid was letting him know that he was there for him?

It was very, very cute and fatherly and it tugged at Sophie Brown's heartstrings.

"And if Culloden is saying those things, must be true, right? Doesn't Kevin wanna be a potioneer? If the potions master knows Kevin's gonna be okay, then... he will. Kevin must have a lot going for him, enough that his behavior problems won't ruin his life." Heh. "And maybe this'll help him learn from his mistakes and... and be the person we all know he can be." There was a pause, and then, "And I could get you two-way mirrors, if you want." If they didn't already have them. "Then the distance won't be as hard." How about that?

He understood what she had been talking about with the dragon horn, that was nice even though it wouldn't have mattered to her if he hadn't. Lux never minded if people thought she was different or silly; she liked to do her own thing and be happy.

So it would be seven for all the amounts.

ALRIGHTY, she could do that as well!! What she DIDN'T want to do was cut back on the chocolate because it was delicious. Seemed that Culloden decided to play it by ear in the end, so that was alright. Smiling, she made note of the new additions and felt a lot better about the potion just from that.

"Okay, I think that's it for now Professor. If I have any other questions I'll come back to you but you have been a HUGE help." She was so grateful for the advice and assistance.

Zander wanted to protest. He did try though, maybe it wasn't as hard as everyone else thought, but these kinds of things didn't come as easily to him. It wasn't fair! The Gryffindor only nodded, letting his head fall a little lower as he did so. There was no point in arguing. No one else saw Kevin in the same light as he did. There was a reason why they were best mates after all. It was just frustrating. The Headmistress, she must've refused to see his progress. And there WAS progress. Zander had seen it himself.

As for the other thing though... That was just it. Zander KNEW he wasn't alone, yet he couldn't help but feel as though he was. He knew he had Sophie Brown, obviously, and Puck too and a whole bunch of other-- Wait, Professor Culloden? Uh. Aheeeeeem anyways, he knew he wasn't alone... And he knew the world would go on... But how come it didn't feel like that right now? His brain was convinced, only his heart wasn't. And Zander didn't really follow his brain most of the times, an epic flaw or something of the sort.

He waited a couple of beats, before looking back up at Sophie again. "Yeah, yeah he does want to be a potioneer," he nodded slowly. And Kevin would be great at it too. Only the BEST potioneer, Zander was sure of it. But then, eyes filled with concern, he turned back to his Potion's Professor. "You really think universities will accept him... You know... After all of this?" It was a genuine question. Because if Kevin could get to university, then maybe things would be okay. And Sophie was right, if Culloden was saying those things, it must be true because the man does potions for his life, practically.

"And uh, actually, I bought us two-way mirrors for his last birthday," okay so maybe Zander was being a real wimp. He had the mirrors and he was STILL being dramatic. Merlin, please help this foolish child.

Cosgrach nodded at what Sophie said, and looked back at Zander. He briefly debated whether to be honest or lie a little bit, but decided to be the first one. He didn't want an angry Zander accusing him of misleading.

"Not gonna lie, he's got to work hard," he said, "and the best universities probably wouldn't want him. But he can go to an average school," like a university in an average country, "and work his way up." If he was the boy he promised to be.

"So, you're still feeling terrible, or..?" Or was he better? Hopefully?

Sophie smiled and nodded encouragingly as Culloden explained that Kevin COULD succeed if he worked hard, and really, that was enough. There was hope for Kevin yet, and he could find success. Everything would be fiiiine.

She examined Zander at Culloden's question, squinting slightly and thinking that Zander didn't feel TERRIBLE at the moment, but... there was a sadness within him that probably wasn't going away anytime soon. Even with constant attempts to cheer him up, she was certain there would be a part of him that could only heal with time.

But, they could still try to help. "Should we find other ways to cheer you up?" He got a gentle poke to the side. She had a few things in mind.

The Gryffindor nodded in understanding as the Potions Master went on to explain. So it wasn't entirely impossible. Though, the words were a bit disheartening. Kevin would have to work EXTRA hard. This much worried the Fifth Year. Kevin was determined though... And he did have both his heart AND his mind set on becoming a potioneer. So hopefully he'd be willing to put in the effort? And since his mother did a lot of potions stuff, there was always a way to practice at home. Y'know, maybe Kevin wouldn't have too much trouble after all.

And though this was a bit comforting and though he didn't feel absolutely terrible, there was still going to be a part of him that would stay sad for a very long time. Kevin was gone. As selfish as it was, Zander hated knowing that he'd have to go through the next few years without him.

He shook his head at his Professor, "No, not terrible," he was quiet still. He didn't FEEL terrible, but he was still sad. And the ever-so perceptive Sophie Brown probably caught onto that with all her squinting and considering and other Ravenclawthings. "What other ways have you got in mind?" he asked her with a small hint of a smile, though he wasn't outright grinning or anything. He was still sad, remember?

StarShine 03-28-2015 02:33 PM

Cosgrach smiled at Zander, then. See? It wasn't the end of the world, and now that Zander didn't feel 'terrible', he could focus on other things.

Wait, 'other ways'?

Cosgrach eyed Sophie, because he didn't know any 'other ways' to cheer Zander up.
