of Professor Culloden

As you enter the room, the first thing you see in the middle of the room is a hand-made Turkish carpet and nothing else. To the immediate right of the door stands a coat hanger for four coats a time, and you are expected to hang your coat there before fully entering the room. Professor's desk and two chairs in front of it are located at the right end with three pictures hanging from the wall, and his bookcase and 'emergency potions' shelves with a representational potion brewing set are located at the left end of the room. The walls are painted light blue.

The desk and visitors' set look expensive, and they indeed are. They are from genuine mahogany, all cut from the same wood. There is usually a big pile of papers hastily arranged at the farther side of the desk, and you will always see a potion phial and a book on the more organised side. Behind it is his office chair, and in front of it are two comfortable looking armchairs with a coffee table between them. You'll find a bowl of sweets that is filled with cheering up potion that will last for approximately three hours. Go on, take a cherry, apple, orange or lemon flavoured. Be careful not to take the last lemon though, because they are his favourite.

To the right side of the wall behind the desk hangs a picture depicting a Mardin, Midyat house with smiling kids sometimes singing a song and sometimes playing a game. To the left is a painting depicting Afghanistan with an old wizard at the centre of it. He is brewing a mysterious potion and will be more than happy to speak to you in Persian, but he just smiles upon asking about what he is doing. He was a respected wizard of Afghanistan, and Professor Culloden paid a fortune for the painting, so act accordingly. Beneath them in the middle hangs a picture of Borneo rainforests with birds and insects. If you are lucky, you will be treated with a birds lullaby and if you are unlucky, the insects will drill your brains with their buzzing sound.

The middle is only occupied by a handmade Turkish rug. While you may step on it, you will land yourself in detention faster than you can say 'potion' if those shoes are muddy or wet.

At the other end of the room is a bookcase full of books about potions, both muggle and magical plants and animals. Don't be surprised if you see your professor's name on 3-4 of them. Depending on how much he likes you, he may lend them to you.

On the shelves next to the bookcase stands his golden, representational potions brewing set and a few phials full of different potions. Along with the carpet and pictures, the set is his most prized possession.

If you can find him in his office, you are 'okay' to pay a visit.

WhittyBitty 01-06-2015 07:31 PM

Entering the office, Lux took a seat in one of the chairs knowing that he probably wouldn't mind her doing so without permission first - he wasn't Bellaire after all. The walls were BLUE and she was in total support of it because blue was the best colour ever. The man had good taste in paint colours.

"Hello, Professor. Did you have a good summer?" It was polite to have small talk first, and she DID hope that he had a good holiday since teaching was probably stressful. It was also probably stressful to be Bart's step-father because as much as she liked her friend, he could be a handful.

StarShine 01-06-2015 08:39 PM

Cosgrach liked it that she directly took a seat. He was tired of teeling people to do so. He honestly didn't mind if people sat or not.

He closed the door after her, feeling a bit bad for the two lads outside, but he knew they would understand. He turned to sit on his throne, and grinned at the girl.

"It was well," he said, "I helped my wife, Victoria Culloden, with her election campaign." Just so Lux told her parents so that they would vote for her too. "How was yours?"

WhittyBitty 01-06-2015 09:19 PM

It was nice to hear that Culloden had a nice summer, though she was a little surprised to hear that Bart's mom was running for the elections. "She wants to be Minister? I don't think Bart ever told me. That's so awesome!" Maaaaybe she would tell her parents about it and they could vote for her. Hehe.

"My summer was awesome! I went to California and New York and I saw a lot of friends and Bay." It had been so much fun and it sucked that she had to do her O.W.L.s this term and her Lion was gone. She also missed Jun and Justine but she still talked to them and was so happy that they were dating now. "Do you want a Chocolate Frog?" Surely that was okay since this was his office and not the classroom or potions lab.

StarShine 01-07-2015 04:58 PM

Cosgrach nodded and smiled. "I guess Bart didn't want to sound boasting, but she does, yes. Her ideas are pretty neat." He would say only this much, though. From what he had observed, it was better to be nonchalant about it than enforcing. If Lux' parents needed more information, they could owl Victoria.

He grinned at her summer. "That's great!" He wished he could spend a summer in New York too. He missed the place - but hold on! Did she say 'chocolate' frogs?

"Yes, please!" he said, chuckling, and even opened his palm. And once that was out of the way, he asked "How can I help you today?"

WhittyBitty 01-07-2015 08:28 PM

Awww, it was adorable how Professor Culloden was talking about his wife. Sometimes she found it hard to believe that the man was married to Bart's mother. She was tempted to talk about this more, but felt that maybe it was a good idea to get down to business when there were other people waiting outside and Adi needed to work on his potion with the Professor. They could always have more small talk later.

Taking a Chocolate Frog out of her pocket, she handed it over with a smile before taking one for herself. "Well, I was wondering if you could tell me what I need to do to become a Potioneer. Like... what scores I need on which O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s and what I need to take in school after leaving Hogwarts and such. I don't really have any idea." And he could be a huge help because he was an expert in this field.

StarShine 01-08-2015 07:19 AM

Assuming this is *before* he got his owl about the workshop ^_^

He proceded to open the frog as she spoke, and had a big smile on his face once she was done. "So you want to be one?" he asked as he bit the head of the frog, and was thoroughly happy. She could probably tell.

Once he was done chewing, he said "There are generally three groups of potioneers, one: the kind who are the brain, the inventors and the planners. Two: the assistants of those, who conduct the, shall we say, 'boring' work - setting up the experiment but not doing anything important. The third group is obvious: they are commercial potioneers and brew the potions people can't, y'know, like they have a shop somewhere and such, or work at the St. Mungo's." He took another bite and chewed to allow that to sink in.

"Personally, I think you are in the first group," he said with a small smile once he was done chewing, "or the third at worst. You'll be in the second group during your university years, of course, but don't stay there permanently." He bet she wouldn't forgive herself, then, but he wouldn't forgive her too. "With that in mind, the minimum you'll need is: 'O's in potions, care of magical creatures and herbology in OWLs, and 'E's in transfiguration and charms. 'E' in defense against dark arts is also good. Normally, 'A' suffices too, but I don't think your professors will accept you to the classes with only an 'A'." Would they? He doubted.

"Now, did I get all of these marks?" He laughed. "No. I failed in charms and D-A-D-A, yet here I am. I had to take those classes in university too, definitely not recommended," he said with a soft chuckle, hoping she understood that he was only talking of his own failure to show her he truly, truly didn't recommend that way.

"As for the NEWTS, all 'O's are always a plus. But my professor at the university told me that it had been my luck that I'd had the time to experiment so much here instead of studying for charms or D-A-D-A. So," he opened his arms to both sides and smiled a little to say 'It's up to you,' "definitely 'O's in potions, herbology and C-O-M-C, 'E's in transfiguration, charms and D-A-D-A. Then you apply to the universities. Don't limit yourself with only UK and USA - but we'll talk about that when the time comes. For now, focus on these six courses. You have already got a MESOP recommendation. Come to this workshop I've just put up the notice of even though you don't have any idea, and next year, you and I can have more advanced, private lessons."

How did it sound?

WhittyBitty 01-08-2015 09:51 PM

It was obvious that he was pleased with her wanting to become a Potioneer. But then of course it would seeing as this WAS his field. Enthusiastically Lux nodded, temporarily forgetting about the Chocolate Frog she still had to unwrap. "Oh, yes! I love brewing potions. I want to do it for a living and invent potions when I know how to." Obviously she would learn those skills over time and she was very excited to. "I am thinking of opening a shop where I can sell potions I make, but that isn't set in stone yet. I might go down the path of inventing if I have a knack for it."

Curiously she listened as Professor Culloden gave a lot of really helpful and thorough advice. Three different kinds of Potioneers... Huh. That had never occurred to her before, though she supposed that it made sense. He definitely knew what he was talking about! The first one sounded like the best kind to her. The last was second best, and the middle was least appealing though she could definitely see the necessity of it. "I definitely want to strive for the first kind. I am so excited to create things!" Aaaah, she already had some potions in mind for this. Hehe.

A bunch of O and E scores were mentioned for O.W.L.s... No surprise there. It would have been more shocking if she didn't need high scores in multiple subjects and the Herbology and CoMC thing definitely made sense. She wasn't as sure about DADA though. "Why is it a good idea to have an E in Defence Against the Dark Arts?" she asked curiously. The subject wasn't as worrisome to her as Transfiguration, she just wasn't sure what it had to do with potions and it would be nice for him to explain it to her. "So it's mandatory I get Os in the first three but if I don't get the E marks it's possible to get the marks later on?" It sounded as if that was what he was telling her, but clarification would be nice. Definitely best for her to get the Es, but still... it was a little comforting to know that she could at least take Transfiguration later on if worst came to worst.

The N.E.W.T. score thing was good to know as well, though Lux was't sure that she could manage Os on everything. The effort would kill her! Nodding, she took in everything he was saying and figured that she could strive for Os in the first three and Es in the second three. The bit about not limiting herself to the UK and US got a nod as well. She had never given that thought much consideration, but it was the workshop that really had her attention now.

"Oh, I will so be there! I already have a potion in mind!"Yeah, she had only heard about it now but that didn't mean an idea hadn't just popped into her head because it DID. Good thing that she had some potions in mind for creation already. hehe. "The private lessons sound great!" She was so excited already.

StarShine 01-09-2015 05:38 PM

Once he was done talking, he bit the last piece of the frog as she spoke and asked her questions. He simply nodded when she said she wanted to open a shop to sell her own inventions. It wasn't in the near future, her ideas would surely change, so he didn't have anything to say for now. He did smile when she said she wanted to create things. Of course! It was such a romantic idea to create things - it had been one of his dreams as well... and one that he had achieved, thankfully.

"Because there are also dark potions," he said, "and/or potions created with dark magic." Made sense now? She couldn't ignore the dark side of magic if she wanted to be great. "And there are potions to treat injuries caused by dark magic as well. You need to learn the cause to think of treating." Made sense now? He hoped so.

"I'm just saying that get the adequate marks to attend the NEWT classes for those three subjects. You'll need those to enter the university." As in, don't take him as an example in that - what he did was inhumane, and she was already too responsible to suffer.

"You already do?" He laughed. "That's great. I'd ask, but that's for later - your friends are waiting outside." Apparently, he was the popular guy of the school. Not that he complained! He enjoyed this, thank you very much.

"So, we can arrange private lessons next year. Like I said, just focus on these subjects and the workshop this year."

If that was all she had to say...?

WhittyBitty 01-09-2015 08:30 PM

Oh, right. Duh. Lux hadn't really thought about that aspect of Potions because it was unpleasant. "I like to think of happy potions not mean ones, but that makes a lot of sense!" Like with the guilt potion and hate potions...love potion as well, it could be argued. Those ones weren't so nice. Neither were the poisons.

With a nod, she understood what he was saying about the N.E.W.T. thing. "Okay, that makes sense," she said so that he would know they were on the same page. "I'll send you the owl with my potion idea soon!" Like...maybe after dinner. Point was he didn't need to wait long. "But yeah, I'll focus on those two areas and thank you SO much for the advice." Like it was very helpful and meant a lot to her.

Smiling, she got to her feet again since he had other people to see.

StarShine 01-09-2015 08:41 PM

Cosgrach laughed. "Of course." Of course she loved happy potions better, and that was better, anyway. There were enough dark potions around. No one needed more of them.

"I look forward to it!" he exclaimed - he really wondered what her idea was. He wondered everyone's idea, actually. Kids tended to be more creative. It ought to be fun... unless someone was stupid enough to explode something.

"I'm glad I could help," he said and got up as well, because only that was polite. "See you later then, Lux." He made his way to his door after her...

"So, uh..." It was deciding who to call for first, but he decided on Zeke: he was younger than Silas.

"And younger people first now, yeah?" He smiled at the rest of them, but didn't really wait for an answer from the other boys and merely nodded at Zeke to come in.

Darn straight it was his turn!!! Silas and the others got there AFTER him... he was not about to have his spot in 'line' stolen! But weeeee, his turn! He wasn't sure how he felt about the 'younger' people first bit though, that was age-ist or something.

"Thanks, Professor," he said as he stepped into the mans office, leaving the comfy waiting chairs behind. The office itself looked as it had when he visited last year, but he didn't look around much. The carpet though, that was still there. BIG carpet rug thing.

"I need your help Professor, I stuffed up big time." BIIIGGG time, and he thought he was doing the right thing, kinda, maybe no, at the time.

StarShine 01-10-2015 07:24 AM

He closed the door after him, and gestured at the armchairs. "Please, take a seat." Zeke didn't even HAVE TO wait for him to say. He sat down on his throne, then, and frowned at his words. Luckily, he didn't smile, because honestly, how could Zeke mess up something big time?

"Tell me." His tone was merely curious and confused.

Take a seat? Oh... right, yes, he should do that. Yep.

The Gryffindor SECOND year seated himself somewhat primly on the edge of the seat opposite Professor Culloden's and fixed him with an expression of what he hoped was sincere remorse and not fear.

A part of him had hoped the Professor would give him a spiel about how there was no way he could have stuffed things up, and that things were never as bad as they seemed... but there was none of that, just a command to release his inner anguish.

Deep breath.

"Well, see, over the summer I practiced my potions, and my sister wanted me to show her some of what I'd learnt already..." so yeah, you know, OF COURSE he obliged her - but more to the point, they schemed. "I brewed a love potion, and it's antidote that you taught us in class... but I used it to show off my skills and in doing so used it against someone, and I think they really hate me for it, and I don't know what to do... and I know I shouldn't have done it but it was hilarious and and ... " HE WAS DROWNING HERE, HELP HIM. "What can I do to impress them and show them that I'm sorry? Like, a potions gift?" Was there a gift equivalent in the potions world? Something to replace candy and flowers?

StarShine 01-10-2015 03:32 PM

Cosgrach had enough manners not to laugh.

He honestly didn't think it was that serious - how could anyone be really mad at this cute lil boy? - but Zeke was clearly very concerned, so he tried his best to think it REALLY was something serious.

"Of course it was hilarious, Zeke, pranks with potions are the best." He allowed himself to grin, because the kid thought it was funny as well. "Let's see," he said, and looked away for a moment with a serious expression, "Well, if this 'they' is a female, you can brew a beautification potion. There are some easy ones." Assuming the kid did want to brew it himself? "Or the Elixir to Induce Euphoria. There's also Invigoration Draught..." He paused, thinking of more. "And, I guess, if they have a chronic illness, you can brew their next bottle of potions." He paused for a moment, then excitedly asked "So you brewed both love potion and the antidote perfectly, huh?" That was his student!

Erindipity 01-10-2015 03:48 PM

Silas shuffled into the office clutching the parcel. The summer away from Professor Hot Stuff had been miserable! Okay no... he had an amazing summer away with Archie, but he had thought of Professor Cosgrach whilst he was traipsing around the continent. Hence the parcel. Duh.

"Professor, how was your summer hol?" he asked before coming to stand in front of one of the armchairs. He knew it was likely okay to sit, but he always stood on ceremony. Grinning he placed the parcel on Cossy's desk and waited...

There, it was out... OUT FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW... or well, for Professor Culloden to know, which was embarrassing enough, but he didn't feel SO bad when the man himself said pranks with potions were the best. Seriously? He wasn't going to get frowned at? AWESOME! "They really are," he agreed, with some serious nodding and a smile to boot. Mmmhhmmm. He was a fan.

He nodded some more, because Emily most definitely WAS a female, she was just a special kind of one. But no, nooooo... beautifying potions were not up her ally, he knew that much. "She doesn't care about looks, Sir." Nope. As for all the others mentioned, Euphoria, he couldn't see her being happy about being happy either. He didn't even know what the Invigoration Draught entailed, but the chronic illness stuff definitely didn't apply. "It's for... my mum," he added, "Bart's mum knows her," did HE know her too? "Scary MLE boss lady?" Did that ring a bell? Cause yeah, mending bridges with her was going to take something pretty amazing.

He was easily distracted from his dilemma when Culloden questioned his success. "Yep, both of them. My sister watched, and she helped make sure I counted everything out right." Cause counting things out right sometimes got him in a pickle. Additional stirs and ingredients could end badly.

"It was good," he said as he sat down on his throne. He would have set on the other armchair, but Silas placed a parcel on his desk, so clearly he would need some space while he opened that. Sure, maybe it wasn't for him... if it wasn't, he would be very disappointed.

"My wife is a candidate for the ministry elections," he said oh-so-casually, Silas' parents WOULD vote for her, yes? "I helped her. How was yours and what's this?" The parcel and his grin. Should Cosgrach be grinning too? Could he touch it???

Cosgrach looked at Zeke in confusion for a moment - scary MLE lady? Who was - oooooh! His confusion turned into sympathy as soon as he understood who she was. He hadn't personally met her, but she was scary - at least she looked so, and Victoria wasn't his only source in the ministry. Victoria would never gossip, but he knew Emily. Then he was amazed at himself for never matching the surnames, but of course, of course...

"That's tough," he said as he nodded a little and looked at Zeke with a mixture of sympathy and pity, "but I'm proud of ya, Zeke! I!m proud of ya for brewing two perfect potions!" He was also proud of himself, needless to say, because he was the teacher. "And I think I know the perfect solution: You're gonna brew Mrs. Lafay's Scintillation Solution that's gonna make you glow in your favourite colour and become animated'n'bright. Then, you're gonna put on her favourite music and dance to it. You're gonna be soooooo cute that her mother love will overcome her logic."

HMM? How did it sound?

Zeke's hope faded along with Culloden's confused expression. If he didn't know her then there was little hope of him being saved. Except, his hope wasn't lost, not lost at all... and actually, it seemed the Potions Professor now fully understood his predicament. He was screwed.

"It is, Sir," he nodded sincerely. He'd had his laugh, but the last week of break went soon slowly that he thought the train would never come to take him away. He couldn't help but beam though, cause even if Emily couldn't appreciate it for what it was, Culloden certainly could. "You are?" he questioned out of habit. he felt a warmth rise in him, and hope was restored - even if the man's pride wasn't exactly a solution, he DID have one, didn't he?

...

He looked incredibly hopeful, edge of his seat and all.

....

And then THAT idea happened. He wasn't about to repeat what the potion was called, big words took practice to get right... but, the idea itself, could either work, or fail... or well, MAYBE he'd just be pitied, and that would work too.
"Okay," he announced as his mind worked through this information, "I think I could make that work." What was the worst that could go wrong? He might pull a muscle? Get hexed? Who knew? ... The benefit of this, was that this time HE would be the one being embarrassed as opposed to her. Win-win!

"If I brew it here, could you check it over for me?" he asked, cause yeah, y'know ... best to be safe and not turn into a frog by accident.

Erindipity 01-11-2015 07:29 PM

Son? Awww that was nice. Silas nodded and sat down easily in the seat, close to the edge. "Oh. That's nice. Good luck to her then." And he had no idea whether or not his parents would vote... or better yet whether they would vote for her specifically. He didn't get involved with their Ministry nonsense. Or much else they did really. It was only when he was FORCED that he went to any of their society stuff.

He reached across and nudged the package slightly. Yes, it was for him. MHM. "It was just something I stumbled across when I went traveling this summer. Thought of you." He thought of Cossy a lot. Hehe. And for good measure he reached into his robes and brought out a small packet of chocolates. "Would you like some? I got these in Spain." Chocolate for the Proffy. Mhm.

"Also... I heard the other person say something about a potion... in the lab. Could I work on something advanced this term? With your supervision of course." Cue the charming smile.

Cosgrach nodded and grinned back. Sure he was proud, and if only Emily could see the full half of the glass! Her son had managed to brew two perfect potions, but she didn't like their effects. Siiiigh.

"Okay?" He grinned again. Okay! "I'm sure she'll love it." Nod nod. Women loooooooooved that kind of stuff: it would be hilarious, and her own son would make her laugh.

"Of course." He wouldn't let him poison himself for sure, that would be terrible.

"Tell me if it worked when you do it, yeah?"

And he had no idea whether or not his parents would vote... or better yet whether they would vote for her specifically.

"Thank you for the good wishes," he said merely and smiled. The best of luck to Victoria, indeed. He didn't want to get his hopes up - there were ten something candidates - but he was also excited for the results.

Now, was it for him? His eyes glinted. He LOVED surprises. "Thank you, Silas," he muttered as he reached and started opening the parcel. "What's - oh, thank you!" Chocolate and a gift - what more could he want on his first day!?

His attention was back on the parcel again, and he finally opened it...

......yeah, it took him some time to return back to earth. And even then, he was still distracted a little: his eyes were glinting and his mouth reached his ears while he grinned.

"These-are-!" BEYOND words! WONDERFUL! One of the best gifts he had ever got, and they must be very expen -

His smile was overshadowed. "How much did you pay for these?" He wasn't talking about any potion before Silas answered that.

Okay, "Yep," yep... it was going to happen. He had nothing better to do to win her affections, not unless he was able to leave school ground and go and grift wrap for her a dark wizard - he was willing to bet money she'd love that even more. He couldn't help but exhale a nervous chuckle. 'Love' wasn't in the woman's vocabulary, but she MIGHT like it. Who knew? "I hope so," was all he could really say to that. He had research to conduct. 1) The potion 2) Her favourite music and 3) well... he'd think of a three later.

It put him at ease to know he wouldn't make a fool of himself with it not working properly, Culloden was awesome beans for checking it for him. "Thanks, big time," he said grinning now.

And pleaaasseee, of course he'd share his experience. "I'll tell you all about it, and, if it doesn't work, I might be asking for your advice again." Or maybe not, what if Culloden made things worse???? Was that possible?

Cosgrach nodded confidently. It WOULD work, no doubt! Who could be mad at her son for so long?

"You're welcome," he said, smiling back. Zeke got this, he was a smart boy. Cosgrach believed in him. If anything, it was all Emily's fault for not appreciating her son's skills. So, at that, the man nodded again. "Sure." Anything for his favourite students!

"If that's all, you can leave. Good luck." He smiled again. Good luck, indeed.

Wellllllllllllll......... that was easy enough. In fact, the whole visit seemed to go a lot smoother than he had imagined. He'd expected the whole DON'T POTION PEOPLE IF YOU DON'T HAVE PERMISSION thing, cause against their will and all.. but Professor Culloden was cool in that sense. Nooooo worries at all.

But just as he was getting comfy, he was being told he could go?

Go?

But he had so many OTHER questions that he COULD ask...

Supposing though that the Professor DID have all those other people waiting outside, he could go and... leave him to it.

"Oh, yeah... sure thing," he said, standing to attention with an effort at a small salute. "Catch you later, Professor," he fare-welled, and then made a straight line to the door and departed. Suppose he'd better find that potion recipe hey?

Govoni 01-13-2015 09:12 PM

Gabriel had been content to wait...since what he'd wanted to inquire about was important. Really, REALLY important.

See, he'd taken to reviewing potions in his notebook; willing time to move more quickly...and it seemed to have worked. Just moments later (or what appeared to be moments later, as Gabe couldn't rightfully say), Culloden was calling him back into his office...and the Ravenclaw felt a break of relief. He hadn't felt too stressed sitting in the professor's waiting area...but it was better to not be waiting. That was all.

Entering, Gabe flushed and bowed his head. He had a very peculiar request for the potion's master today. "Hello, professor."

Cosgrach got up too, to appear at the door and call Silas in. "See ya, Zeke," he said, and walked to the door to call the other Gryffindor. He was fully confident that it would work, because Zeke was going to be so cute that Emily's frozen heart would melt.

"Welcome, Gabe," he said, "would you like to sit?" Even if he didn't, Cosgrach did, so he walked to his throne without really waiting for his answer and looked back at the boy.

"How can I help you?"

Relaxing further, Gabriel nodded and finally took a seat; fingers idly latching and unlatching the metal clasp on his potion's journal. It was nice to see Professor Culloden again...and not just briefly to get his potion refilled. Gabe hadn't gotten a chance to talk to him about summer events.

There was a lot to catch him up on.

"Thank you, sir." He waited a beat, thinking about how best to present his request. It wasn't something accessible to him right now, as Gabe has SEARCHED the library for a recipe. "I'm trying to challenge myself with a...very difficult potion. Nothing new." Flush.

"Sir....uh, do you think....I could....get access to the restricted section?"

Cosgrach sat straight in his chair to show Gabe he was listening carefully. He hoped Gabe felt relaxed here and with him in general. Cosgrach didn't want to intimidate anyone without a good cause, and if anything, the boy was a prodigy or something.

He smiled at the first part of his words - yeah, nothing new. And he wanted to accept his request right away, but his Slytherin nature held him back. Sure it was Gabe and the boy meant no harm at all, but it was his duty to ask what for.

"What potion is it?" he asked casually, "and what will you look at in there?"

Well...

Gabriel shifted in his seat a bit and continued the latch fidgeting. It was hard to say how his request would be received...Even though, Culloden always seemed to encourage his exploration further into the subject. This was a very different sort of potion...

Uh...

Looking up...and attempting to appear more confident than he really was, Gabe cleared his throat. "I want to try and....brew Polyjuice potion, professor...but I'm unable to....find the right book. So, I assume it's in the....restricted section."

Polyjuice Potion?

Now, this was tricky. Cosgrach didn't answer right away, but tried to guess how much that badge meant to the boy. Allowing someone to brew that one... His life outside the school didn't concern Cosgrach much, but he was responsible here.

"It is, yes," he said at last, then paused again. "Why will you brew it?" It was harder to lie when asked directly, so if Gabe DID have evil intentions, he ought to understand.

Flush.

No, no evil intentions...but Gabe did appear nervous. Mainly because....he'd never asked for a pass to the Restricted Section before. This was new territory...and it made him anxious for whatever reason.

"Mainly for the challenge, sir."...which was the truth. "I work...best when challenged....and I find the premise...fascinating." His tone was just a touch breathless...because he WAS fascinated by this potion that could alter ones appearance entirely to fit another. Even between genders.

Cosgrach smiled, then. He knew he could trust Gabe. "Then..." he said, but instead of finishing his sentence, he started opening his drawers to find a piece of presentable paper. It'd be very rude of him if Leo suspected the validity of his note, after all... after half a minutes search and some slamming of the drawers (Merlin, how MANY did this table have?), he could finally find a neat, empty parchment. His quill was ready, thankfully, so he quickly wrote a note for Leo to let Gabe to the Restricted Section.

"I didn't write down a specific book, but just that you have my permission to get potions books," he said, signed and folded it neatly. "There you go. Anything else? How was your summer?" Or was he in a hurry to start brewing?

.

.

Really?

Exhaling deeply, though Gabe hadn't realized he'd been holding his breath, he flushed a brighter shade of pink. He had reservations about the Restricted Section...of course. Mainly because of that Fairy Tale book from last term...BUT he planned to be extra careful. If he smelled anything delicious...or heard singing....saw ANYTHING odd, Gabriel would be prepared to run. There was no shame in wanting to live.

.......but.....

If a book decided to...carry him off or suck him up...hopefully people would notice him missing and alert someone. Or let his sister know...At least.

And about this summer...."Jeremiah and I both chose days to take the potion...Liquid luck. It worked...which made us...proud and...happy." Flush. Lots of flushing. Moving on. "...But about halfway through the trip, I had to start taking....a simple dreamless sleep potion." Gabe was too embarrassed to go into the sort of dreams he was having...but they were...Well....dreamless sleep was the only option. Which...reminded him.......

"I wanted to ask you...if there was some way to combine the effects of my calming draught with the effects of the dreamless sleep...So, I would only have to take one potion."

StarShine 01-17-2015 04:15 PM

Cosgrach flashed a big, proud smile and said "I'm so proud of ya.". Sure, he congratulated them when they completed the potion last year, but another congratulations didn't hurt.

He wasn't the type to be so intrusive as to ask what kind of dreams they were, but apparently they had been very troubling. His question, though... Cosgrach didn't answer right away, but looked thoughtful for a while.

"I... well, sure, it's possible. However... these potions are tricky, Gabe." He made a face. "They're mental potions, y'see, so I don't want to mess with them too much." He exhaled, still looking thoughtful. "I wouldn't try it on you without a thorough experiment, and I don't have the setup here." So, in short? "I'm sorry, Gabe."

*is essited to play with you heheheee*

Okay yeah, was it just him or was the Potions Professor smirking?... Yeah, no definitely not just him. SEE, this is exactly why he had regrets about coming here. It was always like this though, huh? He never really regretted paying a visit to other Professors per say, but Culloden. He was a different story all together. Couldn't ever just pop in for a normal visit, nope. Always had to be some strange meeting where Zander ended up feeling completely uncomfortable and finding a way to shorten it. Just another day in the life. Sigh.

But right, anyways. As he got up from the waiting area, he gave the Professor a small bob of the head as he walked into the room, "Hello, Professor Culloden," 'cause formalities and all of that.

And this time, instead of just awkwardly standing around, he took a seat in one of the arm chairs. Don't let them fool you either because even though they were comfy... It was probably just Culloden's way of buttering you up before he made a proposition to steal your bed from you. And oh, those candies... Had they always been there? And.... could he take one or five? Eh, later. Now there was actual business to take care of... Maybe. If this meeting went well. Actually, he wasn't really sure as to what exactly he was hoping to accomplish with this. See, regretting it already.

StarShine 01-17-2015 10:19 PM

Cosgrach closed the door after Zander, 100% aware of the boy's discomfort, and made his way to his throne. He wasn't smirking anymore, but his eyes were glinting with mischief as well.

"How are you today, Zander?" he asked casually. He bet the longer their conversation got, the more amusing comfortable Zander would be.

He shifted around in his seat slightly as the Professor made his way to his own chair. Right. Okay maybe this chair was kind of comfy, he'd give the Potions Master that much. Still idly moving about in the chair, the Gryffindor looked up when Culloden began speaking and oh. Well that was nice. Zander wasn't expecting nice.

MAYBE THE SUMMER CHANGED THE MAN!?

"I'm... I'm alright, Professor," he nodded as if actually deciding on his feeling that very--Okay no, he wasn't completely alright. More like completely exhausted. That was probably the proper way to describe his mental state at this point. Though, why would he go telling this kind of information to Culloden of all people? The nice thing would only last for so long. He could FEEL it, y'know? Exhausted because of a lot of things though. Like OWLs and girls and homework and girls and Prefect duties and girls and helping first years AND GIRLS. But anyways...

"And uh, how are you, Professor?" Still, he shifted around in the chair.

So...he simply sat there all flushy faced for a moment. NBD.

.........and....Well, he thought that might be the case. Potions were able to have their varying effects because some ingredients reacted a certain way when blended with others...and introducing too many elements in certain potions could become dangerous. So, that was always a fear. Gabe understood.

"No harm in....asking, right?"...Though, this made him ask a further question. "Is it harmful to take these things together?"

They were coming to his problems, just one more pleasant question. Hehehe.

Cosgrach just smiled pleasantly and let him flush and have his moment. He leaned back in his seat and nodded. "None, right." Asking never hurt, but this one time, he couldn't help him.

"No, it's not. I just don't want to change their recipes to combine them." Not without a proper lab, at least.

"Anything else that I can help?"

Govoni 01-18-2015 09:05 AM

That......was a relief.

"I only ask because I've been taking them together...Hours apart, but..." Shrug. It was better to ask...for long term effects. Gabriel didn't want to be accidentally killing himself. Not that the ingredients in either potion were that dangerous. Or....not that he knew of.

Heh. He could always scare himself worse than anyone else.

"No, sir. Thank you...again...for this." Gabe indicted the note. He'd have to steel himself for the restricted section. There were still nerves about dangerous books. That wouldn't just go away, though. "Once I get the recipe..." Flush. "...may I ask for help with....you know, ingredients?"

Cosgrach nodded. It was always good to be safe. "You're fine, and you'll be even better yet." He smiled. It was a cheesy thing to say, but he really wished that for him. He was one of the nicest and smartest lads around. It'd be a shame if he didn't have a nice life.

They were coming to his problems, just one more pleasant question. Hehehe.

Zander shifted around in the seat some more, as if maybe doing so would make it feel uncomfortable. But it didn't. What did make him uncomfortable though, was the great mood that the Professor seemed to be in. And normally, in a classroom setting at least, a happy Culloden would be GREAT but one-on-one.... It was creepy. He'd never seen the Professor like this before, except well maybe when Zander offered to help with the cold dungeon situation, but that all went down hill for him. So he couldn't help but anticipate some evil thing that the Professor would throw at him any second now....

The man got joy out of seeing him suffer! IT WAS A REAL THING, OKAY? He wasn't just being dramatic. So he was waiting for that moment. The moment when-- Huh? He was asking about the summer? Oh. That didn't really sound like a trick question.... Maybe. Still, he'd have to keep an eye out incase. You never know with this guy, after all. "My summer?" As if still in disbelief that the Professor was taking the opportunity to inquire about it. Which okay he still was in disbelief. "It was, um, it was okay," actually... It was a great summer. Got to hang out with Kevin, got the two of them mirrors tooo, met up with Cinna at Diagon Alley, got a crupppy!! But yeah, okay. Keeping it simple, you know?

"It was a bit weird when I got the badge though," Also maybe throwing that bit in there incase he really was planning to throw some sort of curve ball out there. Maybe Culloden would take it easy on him this term because you know.. Added responsibilities and all. Did he know? Well, he had to now. But talking about it still made him a bit uncomfortable so CHANGING SUBJECT NOW, "How about yours?"

Cosgrach was honestly having the time of his life now.

The way Zander looked at him aaaaaaaaall surprised! The way he kept moving in his chair! The way Zander was, well, Zander! Cosgrach just couldn't help it! He smiiiiiiiled sweetly and nodded once - yes, he was asking about his summer. He nodded again, then Zander uttered those words.

Won'tlaughwon'tlaughwon't-

"But of course you would get it, Zander," he snorted and cleared his throat, won'tlaughwon'tlaughwon'tlaugh, "I mean, you deserve it. Congratulations." He even got up to shake his hand. See? He was sweeter'n an ice-cream!

"Mine was good. My wife, Victoria Culloden is a candidate for the elections, do you know?" Now he knew. And now, he'd better tell his parents about Victoria Culloden. "So I helped her." For her to win, with votes, hopefully.

"Now, how can I help you today, Prefect?" He cracked a grin again. Zander Adair was the prefect, Merlin's long beard!

How come every time Zander felt even the tiniest bit uncomfortable, Professor Culloden always managed to look like a small child at christmas. Not even that. A small child on Christmas who had just been informed that he was getting a puppy. Someone needed to tell this child that Santa wasn't real and ASAP because this was getting really, really creepy. Really, really quickly. And the Professor was probably noticing the discomfort too. The man had a nose for that kind of thing. The scent of nervousness.

BUT THE SWEET SMILE, Merlin that was it. He was dead. HE WAS A DEAD MAN. Something bad was going to happen any second and Zander Adair was going to be prepared for the moment that it-- Huh? "What?!?-- Uh, I mean... You... you really think so?" Okay. Who was this man and what had he done to the mean Potions Professor. Could someone please explain what was going on because Zander didn't even get it!? And then he was holding out his hand? Uh. Was this another trick? The Gryffindor got up and maybe looked at the extended hand for a second too long, before reaching out his own. "Uh, thanks sir.."

Confused. So, so confused.

Also. "You're married?!" Why that was the most important thing he understood out of 'my wife is a candidate' he didn't know. But still. Wife? Did she know he was evil and out to get a fifth year boy by the name Zander Adair? Because maybe she should.

And though he felt himself shrink at being addressed to as 'Prefect', the Gryffindor was rather relieved that they'd start to get to the point now. So embarrassing. This whole thing too, not even just the fact that Professor Culloden just called him Prefect instead of using his name but mostly that fact. "I-uh-well, sir," he needed a second to collect his thoughts after that weird roller coaster, okay? "I noticed your... notice," Heh. Oops. Words. "About the potions workshop and well... I know it's my fifth year so I'll be taking OWLs and Ireallyneedtoimproveinthisclass," there was always something about nerves that made him wordy than normal... Oops? "So I was hoping that you could suggest a potion for me to brew, sir. Like something... challenging, but not impossible... Something I could use... But also something that'll prepare me for the exam?" And then afterwords if he could just nicely melt into the floor. That would be nice too.

MERLIN'S.

BEAUTIFUL.

BEARD!

This was too much. TOO MUCH! Zander was being ALL SORTS OF uncomfortable and weird and suspicious and - Cosgrach was polite enough to hold his laugher until they shook hands, but then -

"HAHAHA - I'm sorry - I mean - HAHA - But I won't EAT ya! Oh Merlin, oh, MERLIN!" breeeeeeeeeeathe! He was fine, he was fine. He was fine.

Good gracious.

"I am, yes," he said, "do you know Bart? I'm married to his mother." Of course he knew Bart, everyone did. He breathed again, wiped his eyes, and got serious, because now was business time and he was actually a good professor - even though he was a pest lovely to Zander, he would take his problems seriously.

Hmm. He nodded, with his professional professor face on. "But this workshop is for you to create something," he said, "some potion that's not around. However, what I can offer you is - I trust you know the potions of first three years?" He taught the kid during his third year, but what about his first two?

Okay, there was just something about Happy Culloden that did not seem right. Something was off. Very, very off. And O_____O SWEET MERLIN WAS HE LAUGHING??? Uh. This Gryffindor was not trained for this? Uh. Uh. Uh. Leaning forward a little, the Gryffindor looked around the office, before turning back to the man and um, joining in on the laughing too? As if that would make things any better. Except Zander's laugh wasn't a real laugh. It was one of those forced kind of 'maybe if I laugh this will all just go away' laughs.

Except it wasn't really going away. "Well, uh, I..." How the heck was he supposed to reply to that?????? "That's quite a relief sir?" Whut was happening. This was weird. Did someone slip something into the guy's drink? Or was 'I won't eat ya' code for I REALLY WILL EAT YA? Man. Zander was confused again.

And then suddenly it was as if mars had realigned with the other planets in the-- or whatever Professor Flamsteed would say-- meaning that THIS ALL MADE SENSE. He was Bart's dad. AS IN BART EVIL MAROON. He was HIS dad?! Well, step dad apparently. BUT STILL. "He's my-uh- dormmate," unfortunately. The guy was all sorts of evil. Horrible even. But Culloden was probably the protective type so uh... Not going to elaborate on that part.

Serious business. And less squirming. Or more trying for less squirming. One of those two. But about the potion, yes creating something of his own, buuuut he didn't really have anything that he wanted created, y'know? Like Kyroh had that hug potion idea of his... And... The others, well, they probably had things to. But Zander, all the things that came to his mind were already invented, you know? So he'd thought it'd be easier to just come for advice... But this wasn't proving to be easy at all so maybe he should've just gone with his gut or something. #alltheregrets. "Yes sir," he had been playing catch up and all that. Making his way through all the years... 'Cause Merlin, OWLs and all that.

StarShine 01-20-2015 07:14 AM

His forced laugh made everything even better. Zander Adair was the most precious kid in this school. He was the most valuable gem. The utmost adorkable boy. Cosgrach would seek him out whenever he had a rough day now. The kis was clearly talented at making him laugh and feel great.

"I'm glad we're on the same page now, Zander," he said with yet another soft chuckle. This really WAS a field day. This was like a Christmas come early. Or, like Christmas all year long. Zander Adair was the most enjoyable company he'd ever had.

Bart was his dormmate? EVEN BETTER! "That's great!" he exclaimed and griiiiinned. His step son probably wasn't the most innocent soul, but he was sure that Bart would protect this lil squishy Zander. Oh - now he remembered! Zander had Kevin too. Well, it was good to know the boys were aware of Zander's good heart and looked after him. Anyone crossing the line against Zander would find Cosgrach, from now on.

But really, this was business time now. It was good to know Zander took care of the previous years. "So what I'd suggest is, studying for the fourth and fifth year. Your textbook will suffice for the theoretical, and you have the lab for practical. I can give you one-on-one classes for that." How did it sound? "The workshop is up to you, really. If you don't think you don't have time, don't come." He shrugged. He wouldn't, ahem, eat him either way.

The Gryffindor nodded, though the expression on his face was a bit... strange to say the least. "Oh, uh yeah, me too Professor," Except, were they really on the same page? Oh heck to the no. Actually, they were on entirely different chapters. Books even. Completely separate pages in completely different chapters of entirely different books. Not even books within the same subject. They were probably on completely different shelves in the library too. THAT'S how not on the same page they were. Truly.

And the separate pages were only the beginning of their divergence in thought. Clearly the Potions man thought that having a son that was Zander's roommate was amazing news. Except it wasn't. Bart was HORRIBLE the boy was EVIL and all the other malicious words that Zander couldn't exactly think of at the moment, but was surely thinking of anyways. He was bad. Super bad. And not even the tolerable kind of bad. "Yeah..... He's..... Real great, sir." The Gryffindor had to cough just to finish his sentence. It even hurt saying it out loud. Hmph. Not great. So not great. Bart was a nuisance. And not even the good kind! If anything Bart was similar to Kevin in a few respects, but Kevin was actually GREAT were as Bart, was not. Kevin was a good friend. Bart was just evil. Pure evil.

But ahem. Business. Right. And you know, it was quite a relief that Culloden was taking him seriously with all of this because it did make him a little less squirmy, though the intimidation would always be there. No matter how much Sophie Brown tried to convince him otherwise.

After listening to the Potions Master give his two sickles, the Gryffindor sat for a moment in thought, before deciding to speak again. He had to sound educated here. So that Culloden would continue to take him seriously, you see? "Well I guess if I can't come up with something I want to make on my own... Then maybe I will just pass on the workshop?" And even though the Professor had clearly stated that he didn't have to go, just checking. Again. Incase. Didn't need to be eaten, y'know? "But uh, one-on-one classes?" As HORRIBLE as the idea sounded...... Oh man. Oh man oh man what was he about to do, "If you have the time for that, sir... I would really appreciate it." NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MERLIN, WHAT HAD HE JUST DONE?! Signed himself up for EXTRA intimidation nation!?

But OWLs. He needed the work. The things he did to stay at Hogwarts. Oh the things he did. Merlin, he was too young to die so early.

StarShine 01-21-2015 07:08 AM

Cosgrach grinned at Zander, pleased to hear Bart was 'great'. Sure, the kid had his moments, but he generally was a good lad. Still, Cosgrach was going to be a good professor, because he knew Bart had the potential to be a pest.

"If he ever hurts you, or anyone really, tell me." He was genuine in the offer too. If Bart was being rude or something, he'd have to be stopped.

The man nodded at Zander. "You can work with someone too." If he wanted to. There wasn't any limitations in that.

As for the private classes, he smiled, but it was a friendly smile. "I do, of course. How often do you want them to be?"

Cosgrach was even willing to promise not to make fun of Zander during the lessons.

The grinning was still freaking him out by the way. The freaking out totally hadn't stopped. Though, he was pretending to grin back... So what if it looked a little or a lot forced. At least he was trying? Um. Ha. Ha. Ha? "Uh, will do sir," Too late. Bart had already done a lot of damage. And it was terribly close to the end of his pranks to even say anything about it. Plus, he was not a rat. He wouldn't do that. Wouldn't squeal. Zander Adair was better than that! Even if he happened to be sitting in a Professor's office completely terrified out of his mind. Totally better than that.

Work with someone? Maybe with Kevin? If Culloden would allow it of course. He knew the two of them had a.... an interesting history. But, hadn't they made amends or something? Maybe. Eh. He wasn't even sure if Kevin would be up for that. Sigh. But no harm in asking some other time or something.

But for now, he was too busy signing himself up for his ultimate downfall. DUN DUN DUUHN. "Is-uh-is once a week alright? Or... Or is it too much?" Actually... How many lessons would he need until he finally learned how to get amazing grades on his OWLs? That's all he wanted. Nothing more and nothing less. He was really in it to pass. Just needed to stay at Hogwarts for another three years without the fear of getting kicked out on account of failing grades... if they even did that here.

StarShine 01-25-2015 07:04 AM

Cosgrach noted the forced grin (LOL!) and nodded at the boy. He hoped Bart treated Zander well enough so that he would never hear a complaint from Zander.

Once a week? Cosgrach opened his eyes big at the boy. "Zander, what are you doing." That was too much. "Every two weeks is good. How about we meet on every first and fifteenth day, no matter which day is it, at seven PM. Obviously, we can change it for special occasions..." Like for Cosgrach's personal business, "but, for the start... what do you say?"

Oops? "I-uh-I don't really know, sir." He was clueless in all aspects of this kind of thing, Professor. You should know better of all people, C. But anyways, he let his head retract a little as he recovered from the... oops. Every two weeks? Even better. Actually, that was positively fantastic. The less the better in this lion's opinion. But he also wanted to learn. So maybe the more the-- You know what. He wasn't going to think about things right now. Just nodding.

"That, erm, that sounds great, Professor." Also sounded like he wouldn't completely fail his OWLs now that he was taking a more... active, approach at this studying thing. "Where would these lessons be, sir?" It was a very important question. One that he had decided to get in the habit of asking. Merlin forbid he be sent on another goosechase again. Around the castle. Like that time with Agatha. It was torture. Do YOU know how many floors there are in this place?!!!?

StarShine 01-29-2015 08:32 PM

Cosgrach nodded and smiled, then. Great, indeed! "In the laboratory," he said simply. They would have the lessons there.

"All set, then?" Yeah? "You can leave if you want now."

The Gryffindor nodded slowly in agreement. Laboratory. He could remember that. Actually, he'd probably have to run back to the dorm and write all of this information down so it'd stick in his head later on. Seven PM. First and Fifteenth day. Laboratory. Easy. Got it. Totally.

"Yes, I think so Professor," One second. YUP. Totally looking forward to leaving now. Not that this wasn't helpful or anything because for once, the office visit did prove to get something done. Hm. Maybe Sophie Brown was a little right about this guy. Maybe. "Thanks," picking up his bag from it's spot nearest his right foot, the Gryffindor got up from the chair and slung it over his shoulder. "Uh- have a good day, sir."

WhittyBitty 02-17-2015 08:24 PM

He was there!! Lux was so happy she could hug him, but instead settled on stepping inside his office and taking a seat. Time was of great importance after all.

"Hello, sir. I won't be long, I was just wondering if you could help me with my Arithmancy assignment. If I can have your full birth date I could calculate your Major Cycles." ...He knew what those were, right?

Hopefully because they only had half an hour to complete this in.

StarShine 02-18-2015 09:02 PM

Cosgrach took the other armchair so as not to put a HUGE desk between them, and just blinked. Major Cycles. Hmm. Fun. Yep. Major cycles. He knew what it was.

"It's January 26, 2042." Pause. "What is... a major cycles..?" Eh? He only needed some reminder. Or else, he knew what it was.

WhittyBitty 02-18-2015 09:27 PM

Yes, he was so wonderful and helpful. But of course he wanted to know what the Major Cycles were. "Well, there are three and they correspond with different stages of life. I think they go with how a person develops and their destiny." ...Or something like that.

Quickly she worked his Cycles out:

Quote:

Cosgrach Culloden
January 26, 2042

Cycle 1: 1
Cycle 2: 2+6=8
Cycle 3: 2+0+4+2=8

There. That had been easy though she wondered why his second and third Cycles had the same number. No matter. "Thank you so much, Professor."

StarShine 02-22-2015 09:00 AM

Cosgrach nodded once. "Okay," he said, and kept silent for her to finish. He still had some questions, but he didn't want to distract her...

Once she was done, he still had the same 'kinda confused but not showing it' expression.

"So... what's going to happen to me?" What was in his destiny!?

"Come in." And save him from this boring work, please.

As soon as he noticed the door opening, Toby was up and getting out of his seat. Well then... he'd been expecting a longer wait, but this definitely suited him. He obviously didn't need to open the door for himself, so simply stepped over the threshold and looked to the man himself.

"Professor Culloden," he said, by way of greeting, giving a nod of his head. "Good..." Uhhhh... what time was it? Toby hadn't been keeping track. He glanced at his wrist to check his watch, only to remember he'd forgotten to put it on that morning. Awful memory these days. Well, no, that was a lie. He had an awful memory 95% of the time. Ah, it was Toby. Long time no (proper) see, eh? Cosgrach was pleased to see the boy, and he smiled widely at him. Good... "Afternoon, yeah," he said cheerfully and gestured at one of the armchairs. He got up too, because he didn't like a huge desk between his favourite students and himself, and sat on the armchair he didn't gesture at.

"We haven't talked properly in ages," he said, and blamed it on their hectic life. "How are you?" Well, he hoped?

Whew. Nailed it.

Toby nodded as he let the door close again behind him and headed across to the armchair Culloden had directed him to. He sank into the armchair and allowed himself to relax, at least as much as someone like himself could ever relax.

"I know," the Hufflepuff agreed, nodding again. It was a shame, because he really did like Culloden, liked talking to him. The same went for a lot of professors and students alike, of course, but things were keeping him rather occupied at the moment. He became distracted by thinking of those things for a moment or two, furrowing his brow ever so slightly, close to becoming lost in thought. But then, remembering himself, Toby gave a slight shake of the head to clear it and bring himself back to the present moment, and he smiled at Culloden.

"I'm..." He paused, realising he didn't quite know the answer to that. "... good. Keeping busy with stuff, y'know? Lots to focus on and all that." Toby thought of home, and of his new baby brother. "How about you, Professor? Everything good with you?"

StarShine 02-24-2015 04:41 PM

Okay... Cosgrach must have said something bad, because Toby was quiet all of a sudden. He was even furrowing his brow? Should Cosgrach be... concerned? He didn't even KNOW how he made the boy so thoughtful - oh, there, a smile. Okay. Good?

Good.

He nodded at what the boy said, because he knew what he meant. 'busy' was just what Cosgrach had been doing too, or else, who in his right mind would try to figure out what to buy in that vast store room? It'd take him two full days to just count everything! At the question of Toby, though, his face shone and he almost said something - but then decided against it. Victoria had asked not to talk to people of her pregnancy until the second trimester, and he wouldn't. He just said "I'm great, thank you," instead, and shifted. How many weeks until the second trimester, again!? The whole WORLD must know it!

"How can I help you?" he asked - assuming Toby did want his help in the first place. If not, they could just chat too.

“Why did I have to *prove* that I was me anyways?” he asked , picking up a potions bottle, looking inside it through the glass.

Great. Great was good, and good was great. Toby nodded, quite pleased to hear that. He may have been quiet about it, but Toby was fond of Culloden. Had been since the guy's first lesson here, even if it had been the thing to reveal his deep, dark, ticklish secret. Also, Culloden had unintentionally sparked Toby's friendship with Soph, and then their subsequent relationship. So... all things considered, Toby felt a weird sort of protectiveness over his professor and the guy's wellbeing. It was kinda weird, but he didn't question it. It was in Toby's nature to be protective.

"Well," he spoke up again, already fidgeting in his seat, though that was hardly anything out of the ordinary for Toby. "Couple of things, both potions related. One thing was just, y'know, a little question." He folded his arms, unfolded them, rest them on the arms of the chairs, then fiddled with the hem of his shirt to occupy his hands instead. Never sitting completely still. Then he went straight to the point. Or as straight to the point as he was ever able to go. "It's just I've been wondering, y'know certain potions get stronger if you leave them? Like love potions and that? I was wondering if that worked for all potions, or just a few. If it depended on other things; the brewing, the ingredients, the nature of the potion." Toby didn't mention the one he had in mind just yet, preferring to withhold that information unless absolutely necessary.

He ceased fiddling with his shirt and moved his hands to the arms of the chair again, drumming at the surface with his fingertips and smiling good-naturedly at Culloden.

...

......he did not. Kevin did not. Nope. This was just a bad dream.

"Kevin, son, do you mind putting that down?" His voice was on edge, and even though he forced a smile, there was nothing sweet about him now.

Hmm, Kevin?

Putting another sweet in his mouth, Kevin stuffed the rest of them in his jacket pocket and turned around to face the Professor with the potion bottle in his hand. Put what down? Oh! He probably meant that. “Sure” he smiled, actually smiled as he placed it back in the shelf. He ate another one and held one up in the air. “These are AMAZING!” he laughed. “Did you make them? i doubt it , you look like the type to burn a kitchen” he pointed to himself and smiled big time "like me" and then threw the the sweet in to the air and tried to catch it with his mouth.

It failed, landed on the ground and rolled under the chair near the coffee table. Normally he would have mumbled something under his breath and blamed someone else for his mistake but not now. He laughed again instead, eyes twinkling. “Did you see that?! I almost had it!” he was SO amazing!

“And why do you keep ignoring my questions by the way? I don’t like being ignored!”
yeah yeah, he sounded like a two year old but whatever. Aww man! The sweets in his pocket were already gone. So he turned to the table to grab some more.

Wait…why was he here again? Mweh whatever...

Cosgrach wasn't uncomfortable by his fidgeting, but he was standing still. He only leaned forward to show Toby had his full attention, and nodded once even though Toby was just stating he had a question.

"It depends on the potion," he said, "because some potions have a shelf life no matter what, and some just stay the same if kept correctly, besides those love potions you've just mentioned." He didn't say or do anything, but waited for Toby to talk more... if he would.

Pheeeeeew...

Thank you, whoever created the cheer-up potion.

With the amount of sweets Kevin ate, it'd probably either poison him or take him like a week to calm down, but Cosgrach didn't care. Right now, Kevin, as cheerful as he was, listened to him -

"I made them yes, no I don't burn kitchens, now please put that -"

HFILJŞSDKŞ WHAT WAS HE DOING WITH HIS PRECIOUS VIAL IN HIS HAND!?!?!

"You will catch it if you try withOUT a vial in your hands," he said, maybe too quickly, eyes FIXED on the vial the boy was holding. And therefore, he ignored the question again.

Did Kevin mind too much?

Probably have to change ingredients or amounts or something like that," Toby replied, though in a way he was talking more to himself than to Culloden. He started to bite at his thumbnail, which had already been chewed right down to the quick as a result of his recently acquired nail-biting habit.

There was a moment in which Toby debated with himself whether or not to mention the potion he was thinking of, but ultimately decided to throw caution to the wind, as that was what he did best after all.

"What about, say... an elixir? The Elixir to Induce Euphoria, perhaps?" He said it casually enough, shifting in his seat again into a pretty relaxed position. "Or maybe it's stronger if you have more?" ... "Just out of curiosity, y'know? It's interesting stuff, is all." Yup.

These sweets were too good, so Kevin ate another one. The man wouldn’t mind right? That he ate all the sweets? Wait, why would he even care if he minded it or not?

He was feeling really good, like , really really good that he didn’t even care that the Professor was telling him to not do something. “What? This one?” he asked as he shook the vial. “Merlin’s Beard! Did you hear that?! Here, listen” and with that he brought the potion vial closer to the man’s ear and shook it again. “DOESN’T THAT SOUND FUNNY?!” He laughed again as he ate sweet number…he lost count… not that he counted.

“Fiiine!” he smiled and placed the vial back where it belonged and as he popped another candy in his mouth he frowned. “You have water? My mouth feels dry” and why was he sweating more than usual? Mweh, probably from walking down the stairs from the Gryffindor tower. They HAD to do something about that, even muggles had elevators.

He suddenly laughed out loud again when he took a bite of the candy and pointed to the Professor as he half bounced towards the chair and sat on it. “You ignored my question AGAIN! Are you THAT scared of m—“ ….oooh boy his heart started racing.

Ah, the euphoria one. Cosgrach didn't answer right away... "It's tricky to have more of potions that alters the mood," he said, "but a bit more wouldn't hurt, especially with peppermint." He paused again. "Do you want to make it stronger?"

HFDİAİ KEVIN NO JUST NO "It DOESN'T!" Cosgrach snapped, because Kevin wasn't pleasant anymore. Did he even KNOW how hard it was to brew those potions!? DID HE!? So he had BETTER - Okay, good - Cosgrach glared some more, but grumpily conjured some water in his personal mug and offered it to the boy. He still got this under control, minus the count of sweets, but he didn't care. That would teach the boy a lesson.

"I'm not afraid of you, sweet Kevin," he said sweetly, "You attacked my door, so I naturally thought it was some sort of dark lord who imperius'ed you."

Happy with the answer?

Once she was done, he still had the same 'kinda confused but not showing it' expression.

"So... what's going to happen to me?" What was in his destiny!?

It seemed like Professor Cilloden might be a little confused, but bless his little heart he was still going along with the whole thing and being lovely as ever. Maybe he knew how nuts some class activities could be even though they were a lot of fun.

When he asked her what his future held, Lux ran her finger down the page until she reached the entry for a Major Cycle of the number eight. "It says you will get money, possibly from inheritance. It also says that instead of retiring, you will choose to be the boss until you die." So that was nothing bad really. At least he would be doing potion making for a while longer which was awesome.

Was he going to ask her to leave now? Because she kind of wanted to talk to him a little longer. The man was good company and he was really helpful. Besides it wasn't like she wouldnt have time to finish her class work.

He had been happy, or whatever he had been feeling, it had been a good feeling but the man was shouting and snapping too much right now that it made him frown. “Well, WHAT-E-VER” he snapped back, starting to feel even more annoyed than usual, the happiness he was feeling started to fade away and he sat on the chair near the coffee table. He slumped down in the chair and crossed his arms over each other as he glared at the wall. And when the Professor offered him some water he GLARED at the mug. “You think I’m stupid? I’m not drinking anything you give me!” his tone was annoyed and he even swatted the mug away.

And then the explanation on why he had to identify himself was finally being said and Kevin winced in disgust at the sweet tone. “Stop with that stupid tone, it’s annoying” he snapped before he could control himself. “And you really think that I! can be imperius’ed?” he laughed humourless this time as he shifted in the supposedly comfortable armchair but he couldn’t find a comfortable position to sit so he jumped up from the chair and kicked it. “Stupid chair” he then turned to the Professor “and DON’T take points away, I’s not my fault your chair is freaking annoying and stupid” yes.

"I suppose trickier still if you have mood problems, right?" Toby replied, looking imploringly at Culloden. "Makes things a little harder to control." That was the impression he'd got, anyway, from general knowledge and also casual discussions with Healers and reading and everything. Over the past year or two the whole topic had become pretty intriguing to him. If Toby wasn't so hell bent on a Quidditch career, and if he had a properly academic mind, it might have been a topic he'd have went on to study at University. But as it was... nope. Just a casual interest.

"I... uhh..." Hm. How best to answer? "Yeah, I guess so. I just find it interesting, y'know?" Which was a half truth, at least. Toby smiled at the professor as he drummed his fingers on the arm of the chair. There was another pause, before he continued oh-so-casually. "So... so would this elixir get stronger if you leave it for longer? Or just if you take more?" .......... "Just wondering, I mean." He really was quite intent on not provoking any sort of concern from Culloden. Merlin knew he hated to do that, and yet it was happening more often than he'd like at the moment. Hence his constant reassurances that this was all 'just out of curiosity', though that was not entirely true.

More smiles. In Toby's experience, though maybe not with his parents (or one in particular), smiling seemed to reassure people and stop them from worrying or whatever. Smiling was a great tool, Tobias had always known that.

...

......

Y'know, Cosgrach would grin from ear to ear, but he was decent enough to hold himself. He didn't want Lux to think he loved money or something. He didn't, really. But he didn't not like it either. And that he would be THE boss... well, he didn't try hiding his relief, either.

"This is great then," he said with a grin, "thank you." Excuse his somewhat dreamy expression, Lux, he was merely imagining how he'd be THE boss.

Huh.

???????

Was Kevin SHOUTING at him???????

Cosgrach frowned, hit the mug on his desk, and glared at Kevin without sitting down. Why didn't the kid drink something he gave, hmm? He wasn't going to poison him - Kevin HIMSELF had just done that! He had stupidly eaten so much candy that it was having a reverse effect now, and Cosgrach was thoroughly amused, but he also didn't like the tone KEVIN was using.

Hehe. Hehehe. Kevin was properly annoyed, wasn't he? HEHEHE. Cosgrach didn't hide the snicker, but tried to compose himself when Kevin hit the chair. Y'know, forget Zander - this was even better fun. All he had to do was provoking Kevin, who was under the effect of a potion anyway. HEHEHE. He'd just found his weekend entertainment.

"You stop with your tone, or we'll have a niiiiiice detention," he said somewhat angrily, folded his arms and started waiting for Kevin's reaction CURIOUSLY.

Cosgrach nodded at what Toby said. That was true as well, although the potion also had regulatory effect when used over a long time. It was up to the drinker - use well and it helped, use badly and it made things worse.

He kept silent, shifted in his seat, and didn't ask further when Toby insisted it was merely interesting. For now, Cosgrach would forget about what Sophie had hinted at and try to look like he believed Toby. He DID believe the boy, by the way. He just wasn't convinced of the reason behind this interest. Toby's smile was one of those contagious ones, though, so when the kid did that, the man really forgot about his personal opinion and smiled a little back.

"The potions that regulate feelings towards people tend to get stronger over time," he said, "so for this one, one should take more and regularly. However, the 'more' is also tricky, because every person is different and like we said, it's a dangerous potion as the dose gets higher." He wanted to ask Toby if he needed help with it, but this was a purely academical conversation.

Keep your face neutral, Culloden.

Keep your face neutral, Culloden.

As he listened, Toby nodded slowly and deliberately, thinking hard about the topic. For a very brief moment he thought about mentioning to Culloden exactly what he was up to, because who better to talk it through with? Culloden was literally a Potions Master. Buuuuuuut then the moment passed, and Toby decided against it quite emphatically. In fact, now that he had a little more info, it might be better to get off the subject, in case he said too much. Luckily, Toby was a well-practiced pro at diverting conversations, though he wasn't nearly as subtle about it as he liked to believe he was.

"That makes sense," he said, and smiled again. "I'll keep that in mind, for my reading and stuff."

With that, Toby reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded up piece of parchment that had seen better days. He kept hold of it and just fiddled with it as he moved briskly on to the next topic of conversation. "There was something else too, Professor. D'you remember last year? With the Un-Felix Un-Felicis thing? You sent a note about brewing a potion with you, and I took a rain check on it 'til after my OWLs." Just refreshing his memory a little. As he spoke, Toby gestured to the parchment now in his hand, the very letter he was talking about. And the subject was changed, just like that.

DuckyLinJi 03-01-2015 09:59 PM

Kevin sneered at the mug of water…yes the mug… and when he looked back at the Professor and saw him glaring down at him he narrowed his eyes back until he looked away eventually. He huffed something under his breath as he folded his arms over each other. His mouth felt really dry and he needed to drink something but he wasn’t stupid! He wasn’t going to drink anything from a potions master. Especially not him because even though they have been on a pretty good terms lately, he still did not trust him. Actually he trusted no one, so no hard feelings. He would go to the Great Hall once he was gone from here.

He had heard that snicker and he glared at the man again. He hated it when people did that when he had said something, it made him feel like he was being ridiculed or something. “MY TONE!? You stop with your stupid toooone” he scoffed, getting more annoyed by the second."And really? detention? is that suppose to scare me?" he rolled his eyes.

UGH he NEEDED something to drink. He didn't care anymore he just needed the water so he abruptly stood up and walked to the desk to grab the mug.

Cosgrach trustes Toby enough not to question it further. He knew the boy was responsible and wouldn't take the potion on his own, so no need to worry, he really was just going to read about it. Instead, he smiled and nodded, then turned his attention to the parchment.

"Of course I remember," he said, "have you decided what potion you want?"

Cosgrach... was too amused to keep glaring, so he gave up and focused on not LAUGHING instead. For once in his life, he didn't mind the insults, but keeping his posture, he nodded as scarily as he could. "It is," he said, and would have added some more, but Kevin got up to DRINK the VERY water he'd just refused.

Not gonna laugh nope nope nope.

Holding the mug of water in his hand, Kevin leaned against the desk and sighed when the Professor was being all scary. He first drank the water as if he hadn't had anything to drink in a few days and when he placed the mug down on the desk, he wiped his mouth with his jacket sleeve. Muuuuch bett---no. "WHY is my mouth still dry?!" he asked out loud in an even more annoyed tone than before "You did something to me , didn't you!?" he pointed his finger at him and narrowed his eyes.

"Well, it doesn't" he snapped back, getting more and more agitated by every single thing and he sat on the desk while grabbing another sweet from his jacket pocket and ate it. "Besides, I doubt you'll ever be as scary as Cat Man" Now Quigley, HE had been intimidating. And he felt no shame admitting that because everyone knew that.

His own eyes flicking back to the parchment, Toby unfolded it and looked through the list that was written on it again.

"I... don't really know," he admitted, and pulled an indecisive face as he stared at the parchment. "See, I'd like to brew that De-Aging one, 'cause that sounds fun to brew and fun to test out, too, right?" Toby glanced up to check for a reaction. "But it looks sorta easy compared to... well... the Polyjuice Potion. That looks way more challenging, and I'd like to give that a go, and it would be best to do that with you, as you're a pro and all. And then try the other one on my own one day." He wasn't trying to flatter Culloden or anything. Even if Toby were the type to make it a habit of flattering his professors, he and Culloden were past that point. Nah. Just stating facts, really. "What d'you reckon?" Just a roundabout way of saying 'the Polyjuice Potion', really.

But then, Toby wouldn't really be Toby if he didn't get to the point only after a whole bunch of rambling, now would he?

Still, that De-Aging Potion sounded fun. He was determined to brew and test it, one day.

He glared at the boy, watched him eat another candy, and walked to sit down on the other arm chair. He wouldn't answer to the detention comments, but rather show him WHY he felt terrible.

"See this?" he asked calmly as he grabbed the now but-for-two-candies empty bowl, "you ate like 15 candies in the last 15 minutes and they had a cheer-up potion in them. So you poisoned yourself." He put it back and hurried before Kevin could say anything. "Just relax and wait for it to pass."

To be honest, Cosgrach didn't know WHEN it would pass. Oh well.

"I reckon, if we manage to brew Polyjuice together," which they would, no doubt, "you can certainly do De-Aging on your own. Then," he leaned forward to whisper, "you'll have my unofficial permission to use both... just so you tell me when you use one."

Still sitting on the desk, cause sitting in a chair was for normal people, Kevin looked at the almost empty bowl of candies that the Professor held up. See this? See what? "yeah....?" he carefully answered, a frown on his face and that frown deepened when he heard what he said next.

He had poisoned himself? ....poisoned....himself?

"..........What?" This was a joke right? WHY would he poison himself?! ...It took him a moment to realise what on earth was happening and when it dawned on him the Gryffindor gasped. "I POISONED MYSELF?!" He shouted and grabbed the mug again, filling it with water with the Aguamenti charm and drank it quickly. Ok ok, relax Kevin, just relax.

"I can never be a potioneer after this!" he sighed sadly and folded his arms over each other. And then something else got him thinking and he looked back at the Professor. "Wait....you didn't even TELL me that i was poisoning myself! You WANTED me to get poisoned, didn't you? " he glared at him. "You didn't even try to stop me , what? you enjoyed it or something?!" Well, actually..if the roles had been reversed he would have enjoyed it. But that was not the point now.

SNORT.

Lux got the feeling that Professor Culloden was pleased with the news though he was trying to hide it. Wanting money didn't make someone bad unless they did mean things in order to attain it...or once they had it. He wasn't the evil type, so there was nothing to worry about. "I'm glad I could give you good news, sir."

Now it was time for her to ask something else of him and he was always so willing to help her out. "I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions relating to the potion I am inventing." Or was he not giving assistance? Because if so...oops.

YEAH, Cosgrach wanted to yell but didn't, Kevin really had poisoned himself. So he smirked as the kid drank more water, and waited for him to process it.

"Kevin, pleeeeeeease," he said, "you ate the sweets at light speed. Why would I want a kid to poison himself in my office?" He wasn't stupid, very much unlike Kevin. So, he folded his arms and looked at the boy with a small smirk.

"Why did you even come, anyway?" Not to poison himself, truly?

Had Lux REALLY just snorted at him?

EHEHEHE.

He smiled somewhat sheepishly. "Great news indeed!" he said, then focused on what she was saying.

"Of course," he said. She didn't even need to ASK. He was all ears.

WhittyBitty 03-08-2015 05:14 AM

Awww, he was so precious. Lux gave Professor the BIGGEST smile because he was so nice. He was also wonderful because he was going to let her ask him questions about the assignment. Some Professors might not have done that though all of them were nice besides Bellaire. Quigley she still wasn't sure about because sometimes he was nice and sometimes...not so much.

Okay, he had better be ready because she might end up overloading him with questions if she didn't keep herself in check. Hehe. "Well, I want to make the effects of my potion last for 24 hours and I was wondering what the most effective method to do so is. Like a certain spell or ingredient or whatever." She had looked through the books, but some of the stuff in there managed to CONFUSE her even though she was supposed to be a potions expert. Okay, she wasn't even close to the level that Culloden was on. BUT STILL.

Look at her being good and sticking with one question for the moment.

DuckyLinJi 03-08-2015 09:37 PM

…….Why would he want a kid to poison himself in his office?...good question and Kevin frowned before he clapped his hands once as if he had just gotten the most brilliant idea. “Because you’re a potions professor and maybe wanted to experiment a new potion and watch what happens?!” he said. “Cause i would do that if i was a potion master” he grinned. Mweh , no one had his humour.

The Gryffindor jumped off the desk and began walking around again because he couldn’t sit still, with the mug of newly added water in his hand and sipping from it now and then. At the Professor’s question, the boy turned around and sighed HEAVILY. “Ok so, i hate studying so my question is, is there a way to still become a potioneer without having to go to uni. Cause i heard i had to go there if i wanted to become a potioneer but studying and me does not go well”

Toby couldn't help but smile at that. It sounded like a pretty good deal to him. And his grin widened further at that last part.

"That sounds great to me, sir," the Hufflepuff replied with a nod. "I'll tell you-" He seemed to realise at this moment that they they were meant to be speaking almost conspiratorially, and quickly lowered his voice, "-before I try them."

Ahem. Nice. So. That was a plan then. He and Culloden could spend time brewing the potion together, and it would be pretty good to spend time with the professor, especially doing what the dude was a literal pro at.

...which was EXACTLY why Kevin would never get to teach potions.

"Unlike you, I'm not so cruel," he said in a somewhat amused tone, and cocked his head to the side. He was going to admit that this was too much fun to be concerned, though. His body would process the excess potion peacefully anyway. Or, y'know... depending on how much he let himself be annoyed.

HEHEHEHE.

Cosgrach didn't move from the armchair, but watched him. Uh oh. Was Kevin in some sort of trouble - OH, haha.

"I can, yes," he started cautiously, "but you have to study even more, then, because in university you are taught. However, on your own, you'd have to learn by yourself." Could Kevin perceive the difference? "So I'm sorry, but to be great, you have to." Otherwise, he'd just be someone who worked in a lab.

Hard facts of life.

NICE. Everything was a go, and Toby was pretty psyched to be able to brew this potion with Culloden like he'd wanted to since getting the letter. He smiled a genuine smile and nodded hurriedly to show he understood.

"That's fine, sir. Makes sense and all," he replied, nodnodnod. He checked his watch, the one he'd got as a seventeenth birthday present from Ella, just out of habit. "I can meet you in the Potions lab later then yeah?" Pretty exciting stuff, wasn't it? Well... to Toby at least.

This year only kept bringing worse and worse. So he did the only thing he could: shut-down.

Even the words of Sophie Brown couldn't lift him up right now. He wasn't okay. He wasn't going to be okay. None of this would ever be okay. He didn't even know why Sophie insisted to go to Culloden. What could the man even do? He did give her a small nod though because he knew he wouldn't be alone. There were plenty of others... Sort of. He was having a hard time thinking of them, but he knew there were others. He just didn't want to think right now. He couldn't. Thinking hurt too much because then he'd have to think about what it'd mean to have to go through the day knowing that his best mate wasn't here. And that was absolutely horrible.

Well, time to bring the boy back to life, then.

He took a deep breath and opened the door with a small smile.

"Tiny. Zandy. Welcome." He stepped aside to let them in, and even bowed at them.

Was it working yet?

As soon as the door swung open, Sophie lightly tugged Zander inside, gently leading him over toward the armchair and expecting him to sit there while she branched off and walked straight for the emergency potions shelves. "We need... uh... something for happiness, I think. Or... something that'll bring someone back to life, 'cause Zander's dead inside." She didn't reach for any of the potions because she wanted Culloden to pick whichever ones he thought would be best and do what he needed to do, but she scrutinized each and every label before turning to look at both of them.

They needed the sofa. Could they bring the sofa in the office? She thought about asking, 'cause Zander probably needed to sprawl out and get comfortable. They could counsel him better that way and it'd be like a cute little therapy session.

"I also offer myself up as comic relief. If that'll help." Whatever that meant to them, she'd do it. Anything to make Zander smile.

You know what was a tell tale sign that things were off? The fact that he didn't even so much as scrunch his nose at being called 'Zandy'. Like WHAT? See, definitely something was off. Well, if that hadn't already been apparent with the fact that he wasn't doing any talking whatsoever. Just a lifeless life-form in the shape of Zander Adair. That's what he was at the moment. It was easier this way though, the shutting off. Meant he didn't have to think about things because things were the last he wanted to think about.

He wouldn't have even brought himself into the office had it not been for the gentle tug from one Sophie Brown, but she managed to pull him inside to where he made the decision to sit on the nearest armchair. Not that he really had much of a say in this whole decision making thing, actually. He didn't even look over at Sophie all curiously as she searched the potions shelf. He just sort of found a nice, interesting looking place on the ground. Actually, no it wasn't interesting at all, but he was still going to stare at it.

He only lifted his head to shake it at Sophie's offer. No, he didn't feel like laughing right now. And back to the ground his eyes went. What was he doing here? And could a potion really fix what he was feeling inside, right now?

This was wrong.

This was terribly, very wrong, and Cosgrach didn't even KNOW what to do. He didn't even think Zander would laugh again, which was absurd, actually. Kevin wasn't dead! He was just... expelled. The man bet they would see each other in Hogsmeade and stuff. He had Sophie to have his back now. What was the deal?

...

The deal was, Zander'd lost a friend. Cosgrach knew the feeling - that nothing would be the 'same'. Kevin was exluded from Hogwarts, and Zander had lost his best friend, period. The man sighed. "The cheer up potion is in the sweets," he said, and offered the bowl to Zander. If he didn't eat by his own consent, Cosgrach was ready to force it down.

"We can talk about him if you want. Or we can tell funny stories. Or... hug or something. To show ya you aren't alone and have other friends." What did he want?

He just sort of found a nice, interesting looking place on the ground. Actually, no it wasn't interesting at all, but he was still going to stare at it.

He only lifted his head to shake it at Sophie's offer. No, he didn't feel like laughing right now. And back to the ground his eyes went. What was he doing here? And could a potion really fix what he was feeling inside, right now?

Zander was dead inside, Sophie noted, and wished the boy would say something, but there was no life behind his eyes - no, he looked like the world had ended.

Helpless, Soph looked to Culloden for guidance.

Of course, she knew that there was cheer-up potion in the sweets, but... wasn't there something STRONGER they could use? More effective? She chewed her bottom lip softly, unsure of what to say or do, but when Culloden continued talking, Soph nodded a few times and crossed to sit on the arm of the fancy armchair Zander was sitting in. "Yeah. And you can cry, too, if y'want. Everyone cries. I've seen this nerd here cry like twenty times in the past few years," she grinned, her eyes flickering up to meet Culloden's briefly but falling back down to reside on Zander again. "You're in good company. Not alone," she reminded again, reaching to encouragingly take hold of one of Zander's hands. "Y'can do and say anything y'want."

If he started breaking stuff in a rage, she would personally repair it all, so Culloden didn't have to worry. Heh.

"Yep. I'll notify you when it's ready." For now, they were done.

Toby gave a single nod.

"Cool, thanks," he said, tucking his folded up parchment away back into his pocket now that it had served its purpose. He sat there for a second and drummed his fingers on the arms of the chair, looking as though perhaps he was about to say something else. But a moment passed, and then another, and then Toby was standing, instead. "I'll see you soon, then, sir."

An awkward pause, where Toby was pretty sure they were done talking and he could go, but Culloden hadn't actually said so out loud, so it felt impolite to just head for the door.

"I'll just go then."

Cheer up potion in the sweets? Zander gave his Potion's Professor a very skeptical look at the offering, making sure to glance over at Sophie too. Should he take them though? ... Wouldn't that be cheating? He wouldn't actually be happy, it'd all just be the-- You know what? He was going to do it anyways. He hated this sinking feeling. So what if it was cheating his feelings just a bit, anything for momentary relief. It was his only option. So Zander took a small handful, though he only popped two small pieces into his mouth.

And already he was feeling a bit better. But only a bit.

"I-uh-I know I'm not alone... I get that," he slowly took his eyes off the floor too. It was probably the potion getting him to talk some, but at least he was talking? Not much light behind his eyes still, that would take time. Or maybe a few more of these cheer-up sweets? Maybe. "I was just SO caught up in my own mess of things that I forgot to check in with him. He thought I was avoiding him for the past few months. Some best friend I was." So maybe he felt guilty? But more than that, just plain upset.

"It's just-- I don't know... It's stupid, but it's not going to be the same without him here." Understatement of the century, by the way. The Gryffindor felt his eyes doing the watering thing and he almost immediately wiggled his hand out of Sophie's rub his eyes. He wasn't going to cry. He was being emotionless, remember?

Darn sweets loosening him up.

Cosgrach didn't answer right away, but thought about her potion. He had a great memory when it came to potions stuff, so he didn't need to check her ingredients list again. Instead, he said "Your potion wouldn't cause any side effects," he said, "so the only problem with it would be the overeating." He couldn't help but smile. Hehe. Okay. OKAY. NOW Toby felt better about leaving, and not like he was just walking out or whatever. He smiled back and gave Culloden a little salute not unlike the kind he afforded Airey, and headed on to the door.

Aaaaaand then he was gone. With the wind. Or something.

...Why wasn't he answering her?

Lux was beginning to wonder if she had asked a dumb question when the Professor answered. Phew. She didn't want to look silly in front of a GENIUS potion master.

No side effects, gotcha. She hadn't been TOO sure about that, because she wasn't as well-versed when it came the the more mundane of ingredients. She was really proud of herself at how much better she had become at the whole science, and next term they would brew more potions together which was exciting.

In her notebook, she recorded everything that he told her though she was amused when he brought up the dragon horns. "I admit that I only added those to the list because DRAGONZ." Hehe. Call her silly, but she liked dragons. No effect was better than a bad effect, right? "Noted change. Thanks, Professor. I hadn't thought of adding the kneazle tongue." Duh, it was so obvious looking back on it.

Since she was running lower on time, Lux decided to cut things short so she would ask ONE more question unless anything he told her made her come up with other ones. "I was also wondering for the amounts... is it best to stick with a number like seven for the mundane ingredients, and use a less powerful number for the magical ones?" Honestly she didn't know much about numbers and power, but she did know that seven was MAGICAL.

"Hey," he said, "come inside." He opened the door and stepped aside.

She did not have a book to read at the moment, so all Nicole did as she waited for the Professor was to stare at the closed door. Soon, he arrived at the Waiting Area, not from inside the office, but from the Dungeon Corridor. She stood up when she saw him and smiled back.

Nicole wondered where the Professor had been, but did not think about it much as she greeted him. "Hello, Professor," she said. She walked into the Office as told and looked around. Everything looked cool, especially the Turkish carpet in the middle of the room. Then, she turned her attention to the Professor again. "How are you doing, Professor?" she asked. The Ravenclaw pulled another one of the large chocolate sweets out from her bag. "Would you like a Chocoball?" she offered.

Sophie smiled when Zander gave in and started eating the sweets, giving Culloden a hopeful, relieved look, but her expression grew concerned once more when the Gryffindor started talking. Ohhhhhhhhhhh no - no, no, NO. He was NOT blaming himself - ohhhh yes he was. Sweet Merlin. Soph was glad Culloden argued against that and nodded reassuringly, rubbing the back of Zander's hand she was holding soothingly.

"Yeah," she agreed gently, her gaze down at their hands. "Kevin's always had his own slew of problems, y'know that. His back-talk to professors... his arrogant, rude, careless demeanor... his attitude problems and his selfishness and how he forgot his own best friend's birthday..."

...Oh. Awkward. She hadn't meant to insult Zander's best friend - okay, yes she had - but she quickly added on, "But I know despite all his problems, he means a lot to you, and... and he was making progress and trying and... you were seeing changes in him. And that hurts, m'sure, that you got to see the good in him and see that there was more to him than the attitude he gave off in classes and stuff." There was a pause, and then, "But if you were the same kind of friend to him as you are to me, there's no way you were a bad friend to him, Zanderpander. You're the best friend. S'not your fault. Not even a little."

If anything, Kevin didn't even deserve a friend like Zander. But... luckily, this time Sophie had enough sense not to verbalize that thought.

It.... It wasn't that he exactly blamed himself... Actually, maybe he did a bit. He was having a hard time keeping his thoughts straight at the moment though, so nothing really was making much sense. And surely that much was evident as he struggled to explain everything. Words were hard. He looked up again at his Potion's Professor as the man tried to talk some sense into him. Kevin did make progress. He absolutely made progress. Why was that much so hard for everyone else to see?

And then Sophie Brown happened and that shut Zander up for a good bit.

"That's the thing. No one even gave him a chance," the Gryffindor took a deep breath, letting his gaze fall back down to the ground again. Maybe he should've had more of the sweets? He wasn't even sure what he was upset about anymore. A combination of everything maybe? Like when you go through the day and everything just builds up on top of each other and all the sudden you start crying because you ran out of butterbeer. And then everyone thinks you're ridiculous because you're crying over a mug of butterbeer, when really you're just upset about everything else and the butterbeer was just a tipping point. Like that. Except, he wasn't crying over butterbeer and he wasn't even crying, well, yet anyways.

It was everything. Constant nightmares bringing him back into the forrest, watching Gregoire. The expulsion of one of his best friends. Missing his family. Getting the badge taken away. Getting it back without much explanation. Everything.

Feeling his eyes starting to betray him, he quickly reached his hand (the one that Sophie didn't have in her hold) up to them and rubbed a bit. Effectively making the redness even worse, but it did help him in holding back any tears. "I tried to always have his back and he always had mine. And now he's gone. And I don't even know what he's going to do anymore."
