The Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom is unlocked, with the door propped open for the first time all term. Although the room was cleaned in late August in preparation for the 2085-86 school year, it has sat unused all term due to Professor Romanos' absence.

You may enter and get settled, but beware that no professors are in the room to supervise you or your peers. Feel free to open the windows if you like; the temperatures aren't too horrible outside and there is some rare sunshine poking through the clouds this morning.

Kace put his hands up and said, "Don't worry Professor I got you covered." he assured him. He held his wand at the ready and said, "REPARO!" and moved his wand in a circular motion and then soon enough the desk was repaired. See no harm done? He smiled and then went back to his seat. Least he could perform the spell right? After he sat down he noticed a slytherin attempt to do the fire charm incendio. Let's see how that goes down.

Benny had been paying attention to the spells being said, recognizing quite a few but there were still plenty he'd never heard of, or at least wasn't familiar with. He didn't speak up and give any of his own, knowing a few more offensive spells from duels with Adi but he doubted they'd really be all that useful in a real fight. Other then for a distraction value...like the spell that made him a reindeer.

Whoa wait...say what?!

They were going to have to demonstrate each spell...on Professor Flamsteed?!

The Gryffindor had a bad feeling about it and was glad he hadn't given any spells over to the headmistress when asked. That excused him from the demonstration part...right? Because he wasn't a fan of the idea of aiming spells that could cause harm at his head of house, even if the man could defend himself all he managed. Benny remained where he was seated as some of the other students, including Adi and Angel, got up from theirs to do as the woman had asked of them. And for the most part, the astronomy professor either blocked or allowed the spells to hit before ending it on his own terms.

Still...the fifth year was reluctant to follow through on the headmistress' plan.

Why did someone have to be bothered? Why couldn't they just use dummies? Didn't they see that Flamsteed was putting on a brave face about it all? The man certainly hadn't seem pleased with the idea when it had been first broached, even if he had given in now. Benny looked back up at the list and compared it both to which ones had been done before and which ones he knew. Maybe there was something not troublesome on there.

He almost picked the patronus charm, but he hadn't actually mastered that. No point in demonstrating something improperly. So he settled on revelio, a spell that likely should have been used to reveal a hidden headmistress and wouldn't do anything to Flamsteed unless he was hiding something. So Benny moved to get up and headed towards the front of the class when there was a gap in action. "I will demonstrate...revelio." Simple enough. "The incantation is the same as the name...re-vel-io." Cue demonstrating pronunciation.

The Gryffindor then turned to his head of house and slipped out his wand. "Revelio!" he cast, aiming at the professor, the blue light of the spell appearing in response to his efforts.

He was biting his lower lip. Hoping that the freezing spell would hit him but then the Astronomer blocked it like it was child’s play. He looked annoyed at first but then Kevin simply shrugged his shoulders when the Professor told him that he needed glasses.

“I do not, I was just demonstrating that one should never believe what their opponent is saying” he said with a grin before turning around to go to his seat. But not before sneakily and secretly pointing his wand towards the Astronomer again and swished it “Petrificus Totalus”

Then he walked further to his seat with a small grin.

Ah, this was so SO very entertaining for Anastasia. The woman was finding the smirk on her face very difficult to control. Was it just her or was Airey a natural ~~test dummy~~ performer? Why she nearly felt inclined to applaud. But instead, the Headmistress glanced briefly at her watch in between students.

"Let's have a few more volunteers," she called out almost cheerfully. Heh heh.

This class had been weird, very weird. It had only gotten weirder when Professor Flamsteed had become target practice.

Amur figited with her wand as she watched student after student step up to the plate to bat the Professor one spell or another. They were all doing well. Really well. And the Professor was doing well too. He seemed to be enjoying himself. Amur wasn't sure how. She certainly wouldn't enjoy half of the spells coming at her.

She played with her wand some more and looked at the list. There weren't many of those spells that she wanted to cast at the Professor, or was interested in doing. Her and her wand had a .... complicated relationship, and she didn't want to bestow that upon Professor Flamsteed.

But there was one spell that seemed safe, and which she liked. Letting out a breath, Amur stepped up to the plate and wrung her hands around her wand. "Uhm...Relashio...it...causes someone or something to release something else...which it holds onto or is attached to." Er... "A driving-apart force. To cast you just...point." Yup couldn't be too hard. "And it's Relash - ee - oh."

Right? Right. Hopefully.

Turning to the Professor, Amur steeled herself. All she needed was for him to block or drop. Simple. Harmless. He knew what he was doing. She furrowed her brows, pointed her wand and became determined. To at least get the spell in the right direction at her target. "Relashio."

Purple light bolted from her wand. A comforting color for a harmless spell.

Sophie hadn't gone THAT fast, Flammy, and she had been VERY nice and given a long spiel to let him have time to PREPARE and do what he needed to do, okay? She was glad that he'd gotten rid of the effects of impedimenta by the time she casted, but she couldn't help but snort with laughter when the poor man actually collapsed right to the floor in a fit of laughter.

...Then she turned her head to BEAM at the class and spoke loudly so everyone could hear her over his booming laughter. "See? Totally useful. To remove the spell's effects, all y'gotta do it cast, Finite," which she did and freed Flamsteed from his ticklish death, gave the man a chipper salute, then bounced back over to her desk, very pleased with her demonstration and the professor's reaction. Hehehehehehe. THE funniest spell in the whole world, that was. The poor guy needed the laugh anyway.

From her seat, Soph watched as the presentations continued, squinting at people and thoroughly judging them based on their choices - people who choose nice spells got smiles, like Tobes, of course, and people like Zeke and Kevin got looks. Then she wondered... who would choose the patronus charm? Romanos hadn't taught it to any of them, unless she taught it to the seventh years, and she wondered if anyone had mastered it on her own time. SHE had gotten very close, but not a well-defined shape that would impress everyone, so... she was no help. But she wondered if someone COULD do it... or if no one could and Truebridge and Flamsteed would then teach them? THAT would be super cool, wouldn't it? Maybe Soph would ask. Not even just good for defense, they were super useful for message-sending purposes in emergencies. THAT was important, wasn't it?

Maybeeeeeeee.

Penelope looked at the list of spells that everyone should know. What spells could she do that were on the list? Maybe Carpe Retractum. That was one of the only ones that she always got right.

Penelope moved to the front of the room. "I will demonstrate Carpe Retractum. The seize and pull charm summons a magical rope that pulls objects towards you, or pulls you towards an object. The incantation is Carpe Retractum, and the wand movement is a whip like motion." Penelope drew her wand and turned to look at Professor Flamsteed. She pointed her wand towards him and focused on what she was about to do. Doing the whip like wand movement, she said the incantation at the same time. "Carpe Retractum!" She imagined the magical rope going towards Flamsteed and wrapping around him. That would happen if Professor Flamsteed didn't shield himself from the spell.

HEH it WORKED! Kinda. But Norah likes Professor Flamsteed with an itty bitty head almost as much as she'd liked to have seen a whole entire itty bitty professor. She beamed at him and his squeaky little voice before giving a little wave and heading back to her seat. Professor Flamsteed made this class a hundred million times better, y'know. 'Cept now she was back to her desk with her boring, non-sparkly ink. Lame.

Oopsies. Marigold's spell didn't quite work, which made sense considering she was SUPER nervous about hurting her FAVORITE PROFESSOR. She gave him a timid smile and then walked back to her desk, tapping the top of Norah's head on the way back. Hi, lil one.

And successfully blocked. Okay, she was feeling better about this now. Though, she still felt that the Headmistress had some kind of deep-seated reason for having them practice on Professor Flamsteed. But anyway, she had done well and that was what mattered now.

Heather smiled at the applause from her Head of House and took a bow, just because, before making her way back to her desk and sitting down to watch the rest of the class do their demonstrations.

Honestly Ruby wasn't sure which one to do. One of the shields definitely. One of the ones that had substance to it since conjurations were totally her thing. Revertoscutum could be fun.... so could Impiriano, which was SUPER pretty, and she was well enough able to project either of those shields over the astronomy professor. Actually they were both pretty shields... Ruby decided that one would be far more fun to demonstrate than the other though.

When it was her turn she sashayed forward.

"I'm going to do revertoscutum, Re-ver-toe-skew-tum, its a shield which reverts stuff when it goes through it. Wand movement is super easy, you just point. Like this."

She pointed her wand at the professor. "Revertoscutum!" The resulting shield that shimmered into place around him looked like water, a pretty pale greenish blue, but you could still see through it of course.

"Its one that you usually do around yourself, and it moves with whoever it is anchored to, but you can move it around someone else, its just kind of tough and takes practice and concentration." And honestly, she would MUCH rather protect her own self. Just saying. "But obvy we have to see how it works soooo..." Ruby cast silently and a stream of little yellow birds appeared from her wand and flew directly at the professor and his shield, divebombing.

.... and birds after all came from eggs, sooooo once they flew through the shield, hopefully Flamsteed would be quick about dodging the tiny eggs that they should revert to, or he'd have some on his face. And suit. She watched avidly to see what he would do to avoid it.

Bambi would be lying if she said she wasn't quite a bit freaked out. A kid died. DIED. Granted she had never met him before in her life but still, he was DEAD. And from an acromantula bite, no less! Yes, Bambi was freaked out. Weird things happened back at Salem but she couldn't remember anyone dying over it... The worst they'd seen was someone confined to the Infirmary for two months, and even that had been a sobering experience.

This? This wasn't sobering, it was downright terrifying.

Having stayed all sorts of quiet during this mandatory DADA lesson - the first one all term, in fact - Bambi watched as her fellow students shot various spells at their Astronomy professor with dulled interest. How did they expect her to pass her Defense NEWT with flying colours if the only time she was taught anything was when a kid DIED IN A FOREST?!

Deep breaths. In, out. There. Calm. Perhaps she should have a go. Mandatory lesson with the Headmistress after all, it couldn't hurt. She might even impress her, who knows? Eyes flicking over to the spell list, she found one that was to her liking. It wouldn't maim Flamsteed - whom she genuinely liked and didn't want to attack - and would also cheer her up quite a bit. She liked thinking of her happy moments.

"I'm going to demonstrate the Patronus Charm, commonly used as a defensive against Dementors and Lethifolds," Bambi said as she rose to her feet and pointed her wand at the space next to Professor Flamsteed. She'd slaved over this charm all of last year, and while she hadn't practiced in a while she was confident she could produce her corporeal Patronus. It had taken her months to even get the silver disc thing, and then another half a year until she'd finally managed to conjure it with relative ease.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, allowing her go to memory to well up within her. A small smile danced on her lips and she knew she was ready. No thoughts of dead kids, only her friends and family during the best night of her life. "Expecto Patronum!" she cast, her voice collected and wrist movements steady. Opening her eyes, Bambi grinned as she watched the cute little rabbit bounce around the classroom, leaving trails of translucent silvery light in its wake.

Not too shabby, Fleming. Not too shabby.

Airey was frozen for a moment but then the man's arm started to move ever so slowly. Adi almost forgot this wasn't a duel and half expected a return spell. Hehe. The effect of having duels with his friends in the Arena.

Oh! It was a thumbs up! Of course it was. There was no need for the fifth year to use Protego or anything. Grinning broadly, he returned the thumbs up before heading back to his seat and leaving the floor clear for the next student to have their moment.

Janelle was furiously taking notes. Were they seriously supposed to learn all of these spells.......at one time? If she had felt overwhelmed before, it was nothing compared to right now.

Then she realized what she had done. In her rush to take down all of the information, Janelle had made a mistake. Since she only knew a few spells, she should have been the first to volunteer. She wasn't. Now she was doomed. Looking at the list of spells remaining, there was not one that she was able to perform consistently........let alone demonstrate to the class. She felt totally inept, unprotected and afraid of failing the activity. How was a first year supposed to know all this stuff? Maybe if she put her head down and kept writing, the Headmistress wouldn't notice her. Maybe, but not likely.

Watching as the spell struck his shoes, it took a moment or two for it to have its full effect and, for the most part, was successful. The Astronomy professor's shoes hardened and turned to stone from the tips of the toes to about where the bridge of the man's foot was. If he had worn his loafers - which he NEVER did with a suit...but this was entirely hypothetically speaking anyway - he may have been able to slip his feet out from their stone prison. But...alas. "Well done, Mr. Tempus," he saluted the boy.

Whew. WHEW. Thank Merlin he'd not set fire to the guy's shoes, that's all Toby could say. He watched and eyed the now-stone footwear, thinking that that wasn't so bad an attempt, if he did say so himself.

Toby looked up again at Airey, and this time went as far as opening his mouth to speak and correct him on his name... but that sense of confidence passed him by very quickly, and he instead transitioned into a "Thanks Professor," instead, before saluting right back at the Astronomer.

And off he went back to his seat to watch the rest of the demonstrations, twirling his wand between his fingers absentmindedly as he observed.

Eden..didn't really care about losing her ten points. They were well lost. She had gotten away with calling Truebridge Anastasia without getting EATEN. So. Yeah. Worth it? DUH.

Anyways. The Ravenclaw wasn't too much of a fan of casting something terrible on Professor Flamy. Bloke was a nice teacher and one of Eden's favorites, so...you know. She triiiiied to pick one that she didn't think would cause a lot of damage. Also one that she thought she could cast. Eh.

Relashio.

That sounded good.

She lifted her wand and when she decided she would try, she stepped forward and cleared her throat before saying, "RELASHIO!"

And,.......waiting to see if it worked. Maybe it would. Hopefully. Eden wasn't bothered either way. Her fear of Truebridge was lessening as the lesson went on, though, and she didn't quite understand why.

Dot did NOT like this at all, and she wasn't willing to cast a spell on StarMan, even if the Headmistress was all kinds of shiny and fabulous. She was just a third year and wanted to make it to sixteen without being traumatized... and this seemed pretty traumatizing.

So instead of casting a spell, when Dot stood up to take a turn, she promptly 'dropped' her wand and then 'lost' it under someone's desk. "Oh, nooo. Oh dear. Oh dear me oh no." And Dot dropped out of sight to crawl after her wand. Escape!

OOC: Sorry for all the OOC notes, I just want to be clear. We're going to cut off the "attack Airey" activity, until Pixie has a chance to get online. So please do not post attacking him anymore. Sorry if you missed your chance! I'll leave this thread open for her to reply and for you to reply in return, but since that will be a nonlinear timeline... I'm going to go ahead and assign homework. Hopefully this won't be the last DADA lesson of the term! ^___^

Well then, that had been productive. After Airey had had a chance to recover from everyone's onslaught, the Headmistress resumed her position at the front of the room and waited for the students to get quiet again.

"I'd say we all learned something from each other today, no? If you didn't learn anything new, well, we will have further opportunities for you to practice. That's what HOMEWORK is for, boys and girls."

With a flick of her wand, the homework instructions appeared on the blackboard behind her. "Your job is to select five spells from our master list which you do not know. If you think you know ALL of them, then select the five at which you are the least adept. I want you to practice EACH of the five in the dueling arena. You may practice with a partner, which will earn you more points, or you may practice on a dummy. Record your duels in the arena log over the next two weeks. When we meet again, I will expect to see progress from you all. The goal of this homework practice is to turn your weaknesses into strengths, or to at least improve them so that you are able to defend yourself against any kind of threat."

Annie paused to gauge the class' reactions. "I hope this has been a productive class for you. We.... we lost a student due to foolishness and incompetence with the spell Arania Exumai." Perhaps they hadn't heard the details regarding Gregoire's death, but Anastasia wasn't about to sugarcoat it. "PLEASE be careful around here. Hogwarts is our home, and I want you to feel safe here, but not so safe that you become cocky."

And on that bombshell, "You are dismissed from class. Have a lovely afternoon." She moved around the teacher's desk to tidy up the board. Anyone who had further questions could approach her (though she doubted many would).

Oh, that seemed quick. Heart beating quickly, Marigold approached the Headmistress quietly and stammered out a "Thank you," before shuffling out of the room. Homework. Mehhhh. She would have to get right on top of that before anxiety got the worst of her. Okie dokie.

Aw man! Why did time have to run out? This was one of the best DADA classes he ever had. Professor Suits was doing a really great job with those spells. Well, his reactions to some of them were making Adi laugh.

Anyway, since there was nothing else to do after copying down the homework, Adi repacked his bag with his belongings. "Bye, Headmistress! This was an interesting lesson.'' Except for the part where he had that yellow thingy fly up his nose, he enjoyed every moment. Which reminded him... his nose still didn't feel right. Heh. "Bye, Professor Flamsteed! You're great for practice.'' Hehe.

Annnnd he was off. Oh yeaaah. He had persons to wait on. Noooo problemo. Hufflepuff awaiting certain Gryffindors.

So......paranoia wasn't the point of the lesson. And apparently, Gregoire the dead Slytherin had poked the bear, so to speak. Or angered the Acromantalas in his case. Because, yeah, she was smart enough to figure out that casting spells on those giant, human-flesh-starved, spiders would only anger them. Which kind of made Heather wonder why someone didn't just throw a giant bug bomb on their butts. I mean, they were GIANT, cruel and did nothing for society except trim out the dumb ones.

Anyway, enough with those dark thoughts. Everyone was okay after this class. This was a good thing. And this thought made her want to hug someone. Which she did, wrapping her arms around her Head of House. "I'm glad you're okay, Professor Flamsteed." Please don't freak out on her.

Phew, they were DONE? That... had been a relatively painless class. Aside from the beginning where the headmistress acted like she was ashamed and hated each and every one of them. No, she seemed a bit less distraught now, and Flamsteed wasn't dead ~~yet~~ either, so all in all...

Well, the class could've been a lot worse.

Sophie scribbled down the homework assignment, then scanned the list - there were a few there she could work on, sure, and... well, she was QUITE excited about being encouraged to practice the patronus charm, but she STILL wanted to see homenum revelio demonstrated. Benny had done an okay job with the less specific version of the spell, but she wanted that one. She liked all that came with it and being able to see a marker where the invisible presence was. The concept was WAY cool and useful, and... well, she supposed if she had to, she could ask Culloden or Piers to show her firsthand, or maybe even Flamsteed later on.

Trying to catch Tobes' eye as she packed up her things, Sophie stood, but instead of leaving, she waited by the window she had opened with her back to it, observing everyone and trying to decide whether or not it was a good time to raise questions to either Truebridge or Flamsteed. She... figured not, at least not full conversations, but she still wanted to wait for the majority of the students to file out so she could make her passing comments to the pair as she left. And she was waiting for Tobes anyway - she had a lot of thoughts she wanted to share with her best friend.

Hehehehehe... yeah... awkward. SORRY PROFESSOR CEPT WE'RE NOT SORRY CAUSE WE WERE TOOOOOLD TO ATTACK YOU. Zeke beamed some more... sorry that his curse had been so easily managed, but pleased that his Head of House was still in one piece. The man wasn't one he would wish death upon.

He continued to watch his peers demonstrate their spells and charms and whatnot, and then before he knew it... it was the end! THE END!...

But the homework sounded promising. Duelling was something he WANTED to get the hang of... it was a shame nobody responded to his advertisement seeking help though. He would have rewarded them handsomely.

Zeke copied down some more notes quickly regarding the homework task and then set about packing up. Giving Professor Airey and the Headmistress an enthusiastic wave goodbye... though he wasn't sure if she saw it... cause... board. Oh well.

Actually. He changed his mind. Could he be done now? The Astronomy professor considered glancing towards the Headmistress to see if this was a feasible option, but soon thought the better of it. He knew how to count after all and they were no where near the woman's suggested 30.

Immobulus. Much better than trying to BLOW HIM UP. Eyes back on you, Mr. Zeke.

Taking some exaggerated steps forward to help illustrate the whole freezing of movement and all the jazz. The spell hit the suited man while he was in mid-stride - knee lifted up about waist high - and there he stood. Frozen in place.

As appealing as going into another rousing rendition of "This Suit is on Fire" sounded, he was not willing to go there right now. No offense, Mr. Barrington. With a quick wave of the wand, the astronomer blocked the spell and threw the Slytherin a quick wink.

"Very good, Mr. Barrington."

The Headmistress must be getting a real proper laugh out of all this. Super.

Casting another magic shield around himself to block this curse, he chuckled nervously at the Hufflepuff. "Take great care with practicing this one," he said between cautious manly giggle. "No ceilings crashing down or professor and classmate bits blasted about the room, yeah?"

Quickly double checking to make sure that his shirt was firmly tucked in, the professor allowed this spell to hit him. Fully prepared to be hanging upside down for a moment or two, the man was NOT prepared to have the side of his face smash into the ground on the way up. The dull - but solid, mind you - sound of his head hitting the ground echoed throughout the classroom as he was magically hoisted into the air.

Airey, rubbing the side of his face, managed to give the Slytherin a weak thumbs up and sung quietly to himself...

Good. Good. A complete desk was a happy desk. Or something. School property back to how it should be.

Although Miss Cambridge would have argued that fireworks and explosions would have put the desk to better use. Ha.

The Gryffindor had a bad feeling about it and was glad he hadn't given any spells over to the headmistress when asked. That excused him from the demonstration part...right? Because he wasn't a fan of the idea of aiming spells that could cause harm at his head of house, even if the man could defend himself all he managed. Benny remained where he was seated as some of the other students, including Adi and Angel, got up from theirs to do as the woman had asked of them. And for the most part, the astronomy professor either blocked or allowed the spells to hit before ending it on his own terms.

Still...the fifth year was reluctant to follow through on the headmistress' plan.

Why did someone have to be bothered? Why couldn't they just use dummies? Didn't they see that Flamsteed was putting on a brave face about it all? The man certainly hadn't seem pleased with the idea when it had been first broached, even if he had given in now. Benny looked back up at the list and compared it both to which ones had been done before and which ones he knew. Maybe there was something not troublesome on there.

He almost picked the patronus charm, but he hadn't actually mastered that. No point in demonstrating something improperly. So he settled on revelio, a spell that likely should have been used to reveal a hidden headmistress and wouldn't do anything to Flamsteed unless he was hiding something. So Benny moved to get up and headed towards the front of the class when there was a gap in action. "I will demonstrate...revelio." Simple enough. "The incantation is the same as the name...re-vel-io." Cue demonstrating pronunciation.

The Gryffindor then turned to his head of house and slipped out his wand. "Revelio!" he cast, aiming at the professor, the blue light of the spell appearing in response to his efforts.

How kind of Mr. Atreyu, or something. At this point the astronomer wasn't sure but kept telling himself that he would do whatever it took for the betterment of student's education.

Except for exploding into little bits. Hence all the Shield Charms cast when those came his way.

Allowing the spell to hit himself, he winked at the Gryffindor. "As you can see, I have nothing to hide. Very good, Mr. Atreyu," he nodded. Well, save for a small square box in his pocket, but that had not been touched by magic and in a category all of its own.

Expecting some sort of retaliation, the astronomer and not let his enchantments down and thus Mr. Hirase's magic had no effect. Not on the man physically, that is. It had a different effect on him, dare he say it?, emotionally. A flickering feeling of sadness soon replaced by disappointment.

"Detention, Mr. Hirase." Again.

Snap effect. BAM.

The only thing the professor was currently holding on to was his wand - which he would admit he was gripping rather tightly at the moment just in case yet another LET'S BLOW UP OUR ASTRONOMY PROFESSOR moments should resurface.

The moment Miss Neverwinter's spell hit, Airey's hand was forced to let go of his wand and dropped it to the floor. His hand reared back as though it had been slapped away. "Stellar," he grinned while kneeling down to pick up his wand. Thank goodnees she was just a first year, right? Or else the spell may have knocked him backwards as well and his head really could not take more of a beating today. Still hurting a bit from Miss Lynch's spell.

"WOOOOOOOOOOOOAH!"

Underestimating the Ravenclaw, Airey found himself being dragged across the floor by Miss Wright's spell until he crashed right into her and knocked them both to the ground. OH SWEET SOLSTICE WHY WAS IT ALWAYS THIS ONE? WHY?

"Er...well done...er...Miss Wright..." he said as he pushed himself up off the ground and dusted off his suit.

...and now dust on his suit was the least of his worries.

The thing with birds flying in close proximity to one another was that the eggs they transformed into were equally as close. Thus, the astronomer dodged some...while other, well, he managed to move directly into their flight path.

One to the face. Another on his shoulder. And one last egg struck his trousers.

"NOOOOOOOOOOO," he bellowed, looking down as his suit and seeing the smashed yolks dripping down the fabric. "Not to you, Miss Banner. Of course. Steller job with the spell and all...but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO MY SUUUUUUUUUUUIT!"

He would not manly wibble in front of student. He would not manly wibble in front of students...

Having stayed all sorts of quiet during this mandatory DADA lesson - the first one all term, in fact - Bambi watched as her fellow students shot various spells at their Astronomy professor with dulled interest. How did they expect her to pass her Defense NEWT with flying colours if the only time she was taught anything was when a kid DIED IN A FOREST?!

Deep breaths. In, out. There. Calm. Perhaps she should have a go. Mandatory lesson with the Headmistress after all, it couldn't hurt. She might even impress her, who knows? Eyes flicking over to the spell list, she found one that was to her liking. It wouldn't maim Flamsteed - whom she genuinely liked and didn't want to attack - and would also cheer her up quite a bit. She liked thinking of her happy moments.

"I'm going to demonstrate the Patronus Charm, commonly used as a defensive against Dementors and Lethifolds," Bambi said as she rose to her feet and pointed her wand at the space next to Professor Flamsteed. She'd slaved over this charm all of last year, and while she hadn't practiced in a while she was confident she could produce her corporeal Patronus. It had taken her months to even get the silver disc thing, and then another half a year until she'd finally managed to conjure it with relative ease.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, allowing her go to memory to well up within her. A small smile danced on her lips and she knew she was ready. No thoughts of dead kids, only her friends and family during the best night of her life. "Expecto Patronum!" she cast, her voice collected and wrist movements steady. Opening her eyes, Bambi grinned as she watched the cute little rabbit bounce around the classroom, leaving trails of translucent silvery light in its wake.

Not too shabby, Fleming. Not too shabby.

Using the back of his hand to wipe some of the egg off his forehead, not even the Ravenclaw's arguably adorable white rabbit could make the man smile. In fact, the way the silvery creature was hopping about him was infuriating. Like it was happy to see the man covered in egg.

"Well done," he begrudgingly applauded, fake pleasant smile plastered across his face. "A corporeal patronus is quite difficult to produce."

Especially for him right now. HAPPY MEMORIES OF A CLEAN SUIT ALL GOOOOOOOOOOOONE!

Deciding this time to block it - because he surely would have been blasted up against the wall this time - he nodded his head towards the sixth year. Yes, well done.

Well then, that had been productive. After Airey had had a chance to recover from everyone's onslaught, the Headmistress resumed her position at the front of the room and waited for the students to get quiet again.

"I'd say we all learned something from each other today, no? If you didn't learn anything new, well, we will have further opportunities for you to practice. That's what HOMEWORK is for, boys and girls."

With a flick of her wand, the homework instructions appeared on the blackboard behind her. "Your job is to select five spells from our master list which you do not know. If you think you know ALL of them, then select the five at which you are the least adept. I want you to practice EACH of the five in the dueling arena. You may practice with a partner, which will earn you more points, or you may practice on a dummy. Record your duels in the arena log over the next two weeks. When we meet again, I will expect to see progress from you all. The goal of this homework practice is to turn your weaknesses into strengths, or to at least improve them so that you are able to defend yourself against any kind of threat."

Annie paused to gauge the class' reactions. "I hope this has been a productive class for you. We.... we lost a student due to foolishness and incompetence with the spell Arania Exumai." Perhaps they hadn't heard the details regarding Gregoire's death, but Anastasia wasn't about to sugarcoat it. "PLEASE be careful around here. Hogwarts is our home, and I want you to feel safe here, but not so safe that you become cocky."

And on that bombshell, "You are dismissed from class. Have a lovely afternoon." She moved around the teacher's desk to tidy up the board. Anyone who had further questions could approach her (though she doubted many would).

HUZZAH!

Using his wand to remove the egg from his head - but not the suit for those, as he had stubbornly decided year ago, were to only be cleaned by non-magical means - the Astronomy professor moved silently back towards where the Headmistress stood as she assigned the homework. Once she was done and students dismissed, he turned and bowed his head slightly.

"Well...that was certainly...er...lively," he muttered as he idly flicked some egg shell off his shoulder. He was excused too, right? So he could go get cleaned off and find Maddox to prepare for Mr. Hirase's detention.

Or worse.
