Default Divination Lesson One

Professor Cassie's style seems to be fully back in motion this term as you can tell by the pinks and reds of the room. There are two chairs to one table and enough tables and chairs for all students. Something that you might find different about the room is the many cats roaming the room.

In the front of the room is the usual blackboard, teacher chair, and desk with tea and tea cups for anyone who would like a cup. To everyone's surprise, or not, the wonderful snap cup has returned and is sitting on a table with a sign. You will find Professor Cassie's own cats hanging out up front with cute little yellow bows near their ears as well as a very sunny looking Professor Cassie sipping her tea.

Quote:
Please do not touch the cats in the room until I say so. If one comes and rubs against you just let it be.

Please write down your proud moment of the day and bring it to the snap cup. Class will begin shortly.
Please make sure you have read over classroom rules as well as ss rules.

Hayden considered the question. Why were there so many cats in the room? Because there were so cute? She loooved professor Cassie's kitties. They were so cute. Hayden stayed silent for a while and looked around at the cute kitties. They weren't allowed to pet them? That was cruel. But she was still Hayden's favorite professor, so she'd let it slide. They could pet their own cats, couldn't they? Not that Hayden had a cat of her own. She certainly did not have a cat so she had not brought one with. But she did notice a very familiar cat in the room. Of course there was. The cat was now curled up by her feet. But not after meowing at Norah and rubbing her head against the girl's leg.

Was she supposed to give an answer to the question? Hayden figured she probably should but she really didn't have any idea why there were so many cats in the room. She decided to just give it a shot and raised her hand. "Cats are pretty perceptive, aren't they?" Would that be a good reason for there to be cats there?

PSH, Grayson Whitlock was here, thank you very much. Couldn't miss this lesson, even if it included one of the many things he happened to hate so much in this world.

Snaps.

Eyerolling was happening but he didn't say anything or even grumble, just snapped along as she read the proud moments out loud. Growth. Who would've thought it'd happen, eh? And it was all too easy trying to figure out who some of the snaps belonged to.

But cats. Because that was the main thing about this lesson.

Grayson STARED at the felines in the room. They were studying about CATS?! Jeez, this seemed kinda weird, didn't it? There was one cat he dd happen to like and that one belonged to a certain Cinnamon Bayless who happened to be sitting right over there. Winks for you, Merlin the cat.

And then some Hufflepuff kid (Norah) said something about studying their behaviours and some other Ravenclaw kid (TiaMarie) said something that sparked up a response from the sixteen year old.

"Doesn't that branch of Divination," The one that girl had said over there. "use cats to predict the weather? Is that what we're gonna do?" he asked, his blue eyes on Professor Cassie.

Merlin knows Beverly needs some positivity in her life right now. Slytherin points...were ghastly in the negatives. This had to be some sort of record and...the thought of it was making her grouchy once more. Maybe the felines around could sense her mood because they didn't approach her.

Good. Come back later, kitties.

Setting her hands on her lap, she gave her attention to Professor Morgan. She was cheery. Always cheery. Hopefully it was contagious. Now, about cats and Divination. Beverly raised her hand.

"There's Felidomancy, which is the a way of Divination by the way of observing cats." Cats. Cats. She had a question. "Would that mean all type of felines like lions?" Would it make a difference or amplify whatever result?

Domino just kept quietly and mentally took notes as she sat on her chair. The last charms lesson left her grumpy so she was feeling stubborn. Cat observing is a type of divination? She thought to her self.

"This is Bludger, Professor Morgan," Toby explained, grinning and watching the interaction. "He's my cat and he's pretty awesome." Not mentioning a few circumstances where Bludger had basically been an out and out MENACE 'cause that wasn't important right now. Nope.

---

Okay, so class was starting. Aaaaaas for that question, Toby DID have a theory, but something Professor Morgan said made him doubt it. Still. Worth a shot. He raised his hand.

"Cats are super awesome and really relaxing, especially when they sit near you and purr. And you usually need to be relaxed for Divination, so I thought it was that at first..." But then she'd said how they didn't really need all that stuff today... which explained the lack of music and all. "But now I think maybe we're trying to learn secrets from cats. 'Cause people talk to animals and tell them secrets and stuff, 'cause they're awesome confidants. All my animals know every single one of my secrets between them. Maybe it's something to do with that."

Which... thinking about it... was quite terrifying. Toby looked down at Bludger, who was now laying in his lap and staring at one of the other cats roaming around the room, his tail hanging down and twitching slightly. What had he told Bludger in the past? Would the cat blab?

Snapping was happening after the first respone, "Awesome Adi! You certainly can tell things by looking at the movements and behaviors of cats." Very smart he was!

"Well since Divination is about being able to see things that have or will happen and cats have been said to have powers and such, maybe we'll be using the cats to help us make predictions?" Did that make any sense? It did to her when she had said it in her head.
"Very good. Cats have had the reputation of being magical and having supernatural powers. Though we all know that to be rubbish, but stories are always interesting." She snapped as she thought about how much cat stories had impacted the muggles theories.

"They are good at reading people, and can tell things about their personality or demeanor that we may not be able to see. If we pay attention to their behavior, or lack of liking of someone, then we must consider ourselves warned about potential problems in the future from said person."
Her green eyes turned to another first year and she began to snap, "Very good. All animals have this sense about them. You should really look toward a pet to show you who you should trust and who you shouldn't. This is something that is very good to know, but we are going to talk about something a little different in our lesson today." Still something to be very aware of.

When Janelle came up with an answer, she raised her hand.

"Professor? Do we have to read the cats' minds?"

Was that even a thing? Janelle thought about how her dogs always seemed to be observing things. Animals were like that. Maybe these cats knew things. Maybe.
The first years were certainly representing this term and Cassie couldn't be more proud of them all, "Very good idea." She snapped for the young girl, "But we will not be listening into cat's thoughts. Seeing in a gift that not everyone possesses such an extent of. " She still liked the idea though.

Maybe there was something in the air that made the cats happy. The Ravenclaw didn't know. She wasn't a cat expert. She was an expert in how many toaster pastries you could eat without puking if you REALLY tried, just not in future seeing matters. Maybe she would make a guess.

"Aren't cats supposed to be able to detect earthquakes or something?" Okay, the curly haired blonde was smarter than she looked. BAM! Genius in the house! "so maybe people thought they could also use the cats to predict other disasters too."

Looking over at all of the scary felines around, Ophelia shuddered for a second. Cats weren't her thing. They were awful attackers in the face of evil and they never wanted to go into the woods with her. That's why the child always rescued stray dogs and kept them for as long as she could without her mom knowing. They would go into the woods with her and help her find her neighbor when he got lost. Cats never did ANY of that stuff.
Snapping for the next student to answer she beamed, "They are known to predict things yes!" Very good!

She closed her eyes for a moment as the cat KEPT rubbing itself along her legs. She couldn't hold it in for much longer, y'know, it was like the little kitties were begging for snuggles. Norah looked up gratefully as Professor Cassie began to speak, hoping for a good distraction. She snapped along with the rest of the class, a little glad that her paper hadn't been picked 'cause she saw herself breaking what she had written and petting one of the cats veeeery near in her future. SEE she could SO be a good seer. The third year wrinkled her nose as she pondered the first question before raising a hand in the air. "Because they're cute! All branches of magic should include cats, it y'ask me." Divination. Right. She continued, "But maybe cats know more things than people do, kind of like they can see in the dark. One time I heard that somebody was saved from an earthquake by a cat, so maybe all cats can tell the future too! So if you ask one a question and study it the cat can show you yes or no like those crystally things we used last year." SO WHAT if it didn't make any sense? THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT CATS! Best day ever, she had already decided.
This one was just presh! She snapped for the girls cuteness as well as her answer, "I agree, cats would be a great add to all branches of magic." She winked before continuing. "You are on the right track. They can predict things." Wonderful answer!

And weirdly she felt that Professor Morgan would get along SO well with her Mam. Mhmm. And yes--Eden WAS wondering why the cats--but she did some brain storming from her question--

She raised her hand. "Um...well...does it have anything to do with the Egyptian worship of cats? And like..ideas that they have connections with the divine?" she asked softly. It wasn't like she thought DEEPLY about it--but it seemed like it might...make sense? Who knew.
Everyone's cat knowledge was brilliant! She snapped for Eden as well, "Cat history does tell us that Egyptians did worship cats and you are on the right track with them having connections, but maybe not in the way you are thinking."

Cats...involved in divination.

Sure he was aware of the longstanding history between witches and wizards and felines, but Benny wasn't aware of the mention concerning this subject. "Can cats assist in the perceiving signs that humans might normally miss?" He asked, adding his two cents into a possible use after raising his hand.
"Very good Benjamin, Cats, like all animals, can perceive signs that humans miss. They are great indicators for trouble and many other things." Snaps for you!

He raised his hand to agree with his fellow puff.

"Professor I agree with Marigolds answers about the familiars and somehow the animal can reflect our soul and cats are knowing to be observant and smart animals. They can feel things even though we can't. Could they be like spirit detectors?" I mean it didn't seem like a stupid question right?
"Good thinking Kace and really many animals are considered spirit detectors, but Cats do have a closer sense to wizards and witches." Snaps for him as well!

She focused on the professor and the reading of the proud moments. She even listened to a little of the history of magic and cats, even thought some of it sounded a little strange.

So about that question. Kate had an idea, so she raised her hand. "Don't they say if a black cat crosses your path, you'll have bad luck?" she asked, eyeing the cats in the room. Were any of them black, and if so, were any of them crossing her path? "Maybe we're going to see what kind of luck cats can give us."
This first year was getting snaps and a big smile. "Well actually, that is a very big muggle superstition which I can honestly say is very incorrect. I've never come across a cat that has given bad luck, but what a wonderful answer." Beaming she gave the girls snaps.

Ugh. Cat get the butt out of my face. Why did this cat have to be such a goof ball? swish swish Merlin's tale was all over her face. Any other time to fluff ball would be asleep on her bed in the dorm. NOT Bothering her like he was now.

She listen to Professor Cassie as she spoke to the class. She raised her hand, "Cats are very perceptive, and pick up on vibes and attitudes or something like that." Which was probably why her fluffball was crazy over Grayson. Merlin goes crazy every time he sees him. Grayson was like his catnip. Good this Grayson wasn't here. Merlin would sitting on his desk. Not here with his tale in her face.
She smiled at Cinna and gave her snaps, "Very good answer, they are very perceptive and we should listen to them more on things." Seriously people really needed to look to animals for answers more often.

"Is it because you're going to teach us how to talk to them?..... Because you can talk to them?" Actually... Maybe that wasn't exactly what she had told him and Simon in their third year, but it was paraphrasing okay. She said something or another about understanding animals. In which case, "But I don't really see why we're using cats specifically because you communicate with all animals, right?..... And I think crups are just as good conversationalists as cats are," if not better. He was a crup person, okay? Maybe a little biased. Maybe.
Eyes turning to Zander she gave him some snaps, "I would love to do that, but unfortunately not everyone holds the gift to hear animals." She was one of the lucky ones. "It's not really talking to them per-say, it's sensing and hearing their actions." She stopped for only a moment, the noise level in the room was very loud and not from the students. "Like right now there will be three cats trying to sneak out and head to the Astronomy tower, Cinna I'd make sure especially your very fluffy one stays away from there." She could only image Airey with all that fur. "You will see very shortly why we are using cats for today's lesson." Giving him snaps she smiled encouragingly.

What do cats have to do with Divination?

Wasn't there something involving studying animal behavior? She was sure she read something about it ... "Felineomancy, Professor, I believe its called, when you study a cat's behavior." Well she might have gotten that word wrong, but that's what you got when you fell asleep while reading...

"All of you have had fabtastic answers, give yourself snaps." She snapped happily for all of their hard work. "Now there is so much history on cats, where they originated from, why types of felines there are, the Egyptians worshiping them and why, when they become associated with witches, but none of that is what we are talking about today." Though it could be an interesting lesson within itself. "Today we will be talking about Felidomancy or what is also Ailuromancy, which is a form of theriomancy. It is the divination form that uses cat movements such as jumping or laying to predict the future. Like someone said, many of these predictions are with weather, but it can be used for other things which I will discuss." Now wasn't this going to be exciting?

"Now someone did mention the Egyptians and just a little side fact, they use to put a magical tablet in the mouth of a recently deceased black cat and it was to bring about a prophetic dream." How silly she knew, but true fact.

"Now like I said to Beverly, the types of felines to use can be a wide range. I wouldn't recommend using big felines like lions, their movements and senses are a little different, though we could still use them if needed, but there is one feline that we could not use. This type's thought process is very different from normal felines, which makes it impossible to read and use to predict events. Does anyone want to take a guess as to which type that would be?" She looked around the room for anyone to answer.

Norah BEAMED at professor Cassie and all her happy snaps. The two of them should start a petition to put cats in alll the subjects, uh huh. The third year dipped a quill in sparkly ink and titled her parchment 'KITTY NOTES' before jotting down a couple of facts that had just been said. Cool, cool cats were COOL. She doodled a kitten in the corner of the parchment before setting her quill down to raise a hand. "Maybe kittens, 'cause they're still little? OOH or person-cats? Like the people who can turn into animals so they turn into cats. Anima-something? Animinius? Animali? Something like that..." She trailed off. Shoulda kept with the kitten answer, she knew more about kittens than person-cats.

~ Rise and Rise Again, Until Lambs become Lions ~

Snaps. So much better than finger pointing.

Amur shifted in her seat to keep her legs from falling asleep. A particularly friendly orange cat was wandering back and forth across her desk, it's motion and constant tail-duster-motion under her nose proving as a great distraction. She liked cats. She wasn't crazy about them, and she was skeptical about being able to tell the future from whether such a creature was sitting, lying, naping, puring, prancing, hoping, jumping, walking, waltzing and so forth. Paying attention to who they liked and didn't like made more sense to her little mind, but she wasn't the Professor. And for good reason.

But, she was a witch, in a wizarding and witchy world. So many things outside of her understanding were possible. She simply had to be open to the prospect.

Clasping her hands in her lap, she chewed on her bottom lip as fought to refrain from petting said orange kitty. What type of cat....

Her hand sprung up. "Sphinx's, Miss?" Given Egyptains were a point of topic, and sphinx's were known for their riddle-bound ways. How difficult would it be to discern the future of a cat that spoke only in riddles? It likely moved in riddlesome ways too.

Yaaay. More snaps for everyone - including herself - as amazing answers were given to the first question. Hogwarts was full of really smart people and Lux was proud of all her clever friends.

Taking out her notebook, she began writing notes though Arya kept batting at her pencil. Ugh, her little cutiepie could be such a handful. Not having any idea what type of cat would have a completely different thought process, so she sat this one out and let her classmates answer.

Cats... he didn't get it.

Zeke opted to stay quiet throughout the first question, instead he just listened to what everyone else had to say, and frankly he kinda didn't get it even then.

.....

All this stuff about predicting weather and things through cat movements and such was WEIRD, and... he didn't think it was possible. Surely a cat laying about would be just about the same as HIM laying around... and last he checked, he couldn't predict the future... and the only way that weather came into it, was if he lay in a ball it meant he was cold (or sick) and if he was spread eagle, it was very obviously hot.

...

Just not getting it.

Egypt and witches turning into black cats aside, he was just as stumped about the next question as he was about the first, BUT... he had thoughts on this one at least, thanks to Professor Quigley.

Hand up, he added his two knuts, "Cats that aren't really cats, like that are human but transfigured?"

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Cilla thought about it and slowly raised her hand.

"What about witches or wizards who got turned into cats and then they became a witch's familiar?" she said, her voice full of uncertainty.

Oooh and the snap cup was still there. YAY! She quickly scribbled (not really, she took her time to make it look pretty and stuff) something on a piece of parchment and dropped it in the cup.

Looking around the classroom for an emtpy seat, Maggie's blue eyes fell on....Ruby. Hmm. She was still not entirely sure what to make of the other girl but she was definitely interesting. So she moved to sit down next to her. Hello. "I LOVE your nails." Like, PRETTY COOL.
Oh. Hello tiny Slytherin. Ruby looked up from her nails at the younger girl, coolly at first but then smiled when a compliment was forthcoming. She loooved compliments obvy.

"Thanks! Had to get in the mood for class, you know. I could do yours some time if you liked."

Okay but class was starting now and it was things about cats? Ruby preferred rabbits herself, but cats were cute too, she supposed.

... she tried to pay attention, but another question was asked before she had worked out anything to say. Something was brewing in her mind though, maybe it'd actually become something useful later.

"Felidomancy." She repeated to herself, looking toward the nearest cat, and then around. And then at the professor. What kind wouldn't work?

"Animagi?" Ruby said, hand going up just enough to be polite without seeming particularly over eager. It would have to be, right? They still had their human mind and thoughts even if sometimes they picked up totally weird animal tendencies.

He had been very quiet for the duration of the lesson thus far, silently enjoying the positivity that one could tell practically radiated from the professor. How nice. It was always better to be around happy people who encourage fun learning and kindness, like Professor Morgan seemed to be doing already. Unlike SOME professors.

Ahem, ahem. Talking about YOU over there, Catman.

Opting to not answer the first question because he had no idea about how cats related to Divination, he wasn't surprised by the next one. Especially after that answer from the older Slytherin girl sitting with Maggie. Huh. Instead of trying to take a new approach, he tacked on to the end of her answer. "Because human minds are different than felines', right? And Animagi still have those, though they have some cat-like instincts. Is that why the Charms professor is here, ma'am?"

Ew. Who cared if his shape-shifting was cool? That WAS him on the desk, and Dima wanted him gone.

Shoo, Quigley. Shoo.

She looked around the room for anyone to answer.

Nicole was slightly disappointed to find out that they were not going to learn about the history of cats. She would love to discuss matters about cats, since her pet was one. She caught words such as Felidomancy, Ailuromancy and theriomancy, which all meant nothing to her. She took a mental note to look them up in her textbook later on, and hoped her lack of understanding would not affect her lesson. Using cat movements to predict the future sounded interesting. Nicole would be able to observe her cat Diamond and learn what would happen to her in the future!

She raised her hand to answer the professor's question. "I think it would be dying cats," the girl said. The fact that Egyptians put tablets in dead cats' mouths tagged uncomfortably at the back of her mind. Also, cats who were close to dying probably had a different thought process, though Nicole did not know much about death. Not that she wanted to learn more about it.

Margo took a look around trying to think which felines wouldn't be good. Eyeing the cat on the Professor's desk. Raising her hand Margo took her turn. "Animagi" Margo said pointing toward the familiar cat she had seen turn into their Charms Professor.

Margo had a quill at the ready for notes, she hoped that she had the right answer.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

His answer was right! Of course it was... he had read up on the topic BEFORE he came to class soooo... yeah. Adi scribbled notes as Professor Cassie went about correcting or agreeing to his classmates.

"Er... cats that have just had kittens... maybe.'' Adi took a random stab at the question. It seemed he had skipped over that part of reading. Heh.

Abby thought and raised her hand and said "Maybe cats that are not well or dying won't be able to get read, but also animagi people who choose the form of a cat" Abby knew it had been said but really she wanted to add a bit to other answers that had been given

Proud moments. There were a few things that she should probably be proud of, but with everything going on nothing was coming to mind. Exactly how was she expected to keep concentrating in classes when her world was falling apart? While AJ was dying on the inside she was not showing too much on the outside. She definitely wasn't her carefree self, but she wasn't completely mopey either.

Something finally popped into her mind, and AJ was just going to go with it because there wasn't much of her energy left, and she wasn't going to waste it on a proud moment.

The first question was already being asked, and her brain was still not cooperating with her. At this point AJ just decided to go with it. Hopefully this lesson wouldn't be that difficult because cute little kitties were involved.

AJ thought for a moment and raised her hand. "Is it because they help us relax?" That was vital to being able to clear your mind, and who couldn't relax while being snuggled up to a cute cat? Was Quigley going to turn into his cat form too? Was there a shortage of said cats?

-------------------------------------

No, no she couldn't think about what "type" that would be. Somebody had already mentioned kittens and what Quigley turned into so she had nothing. Yup, this was the first time that AJ Valentine didn't take a guess in Divination. She was sort of listening though and there were doodles being made on a piece of parchment. If you looked close enough they kind of resembled kid like drawing of cats.

Hady gave a tiny smile that her answer was at least on the right track. It hadn't been prefect but she had the right idea. That in itself was a good start and good enough for her...for the moment.

As the Professor continued to speak she lifted her teacup once more taking several small slow sips savoring the flavor and warmth. Setting the teacup down she picked up her quill in her free hand as her other was still petting her cat whom was currently asleep in her lap. Listening to all the answers everyone around her was giving she began to take some notes in case she would need them later.

Note taking finished she raised her hand once more to answer the next question. "Would it be Animagi? Since it's not a true animal but a witch or wizard whom can change into one?" She answered though it was in the form of an uncertain question as well. It seemed correct to her since it was a person changing into an animal, therefore their mindset would still be there own, wouldn't it?

The cat was STILL rubbing itself on his leg. Go away, cat! His pants were going to look like he had grown another cat on there...maybe that was the cat's plan. To use him as a human lint roller. How RUDE! This is why he hated cats!

He raised his hand to answer the professors question. "um, a feral cat? They don't know what you're doing to do and therefore they might act...crazy?" he guessed. He figured the whole animagi thing was correct, but he wanted to throw another answer out there just in case.

The fifth year glanced at the cat as Professor Morgan talked about the cat and asked them some questions. She wasn't going to answer either of the questions and not because she didn't know what to say but because she didn't like cats and didn't think getting into the conversation of people that are probably cat people would be a good idea. Instead she just watched and listened to the conversation so she wouldn't get lost further into the class trying to figure out what a cat had to do with their lesson.

Kace was glad his answer was right and he got some snaps from the teacher. He was pleased and now onto the lesson. He heard the professor's question and didn't quite understand at first but then he understood. What type of cat is not used? He thought about it and went the old school way.

"Professor I do not think a black cat could not be used because of the superstition surrounding them?" I mean it was a valid guess right? He looked over to Emmy and she was just sitting there very quietly. He smiled towards his girlfriend and held her hand.

Hugh was trying SO hard to focus. Truly. He wanted to, to. Learning was his shtick just not in the stereotypical way. He was too all over the place with his thoughts to listen to lectures and be stimulated.

Shame. Because he REALLY liked this Professor.

But he was back in reality now listening. See? Effort.

Hugh raised his hand, "Domesticated cats? They're too, for lack of a better term, domesticated so they can't, like, be as authentically wild in their reactions to things. Less animalistic. More cute kitten."

Kate gave the professor an understanding 'Ohhh, okay' kind of nod when her answer was corrected. Black cats didn't equal bad luck. She had it now. What she didn't follow was the whole 'Felidomancy, Ailuromancy, and Theriomancy' stuff. How did some of these people know these words?! Kate made a mental note to remember them, too, but she also felt that she'd know them anyway by the time this class was over.

Divination by cat movements. Riiiight. Like that sounded really reliable. Kate decided to give things the benefit of the doubt, though. She did make a little face when the professor mentioned putting a magical tablet in the mouth of a dead cat. Eww. Hopefully they wouldn't be doing that today. Then a question was asked, causing Kate to pause and listen to some ideas first. Her ears picked up the answer of an older Slytherin girl (Ruby), and she raised her hand. "I agree with her," she said, pointing to the girl. "I think it's Animagi."

That would explain the cat perched on the professor's desktop.
