Once Dot's pumpkin was all cleaned out, she carefully replaced the lid and sat down again to stare deep into its eyes stem. Ahem, Mr. Pumpkin. What kind of galactic secrets would you like to share with us today? Something noteworthy that would make Mr. Starman happy and he'd give her a million points to make up for all the bad choices happening elsewhere in the class.

Pleides. The seven sisters, eternally hunted by Orion. That's what she was going to make on her pumpkin. Dot spun the pumpkin, looking for a flat spot or a likely starting point. Oh... what did it look like again? She needed her textbook for reference, and THEN she was looking for a likely spot.

Dot tugged her book out of her bag and placed it carefully on her desk, away from the goop and the pumpkin, but still within reach. Now, then... where was her star thingy?

Caleb had gotten the lid off, and now he needed to clean it. Gross. Thankfully, though, Caleb's father believed in this silly muggle tradition and had INSISTED on carving pumpkins the muggle way for years on Halloween. He was trying to get them into the spirit, but he should have realized that all Caleb needed to get in the spirit of Halloween was to go trick or treating.

He grabbed a handful of pumpkin guts and started making a pile next to him. This was so messy...but it was easy, having done this before. He then pointed at the pumpkin and muttered "Scourgify!" cleaning the goo off the front of it that had gotten on there in the process of gutting it.

Was everything alright? Compared to some previous astronomy lessons, she was alright, but she did not really feel alright. Penelope closed her eyes, her hands still covering most of her face. She didn't look up at the professor, but said, "headache." Maybe she would feel better if she just sat here with her eyes closed. Until then, nothing was going to happen to her pumpkin.

Now was the fun part that didn't involve her going at least a little bit crazy. This was the part where Ophelia got to open the lid of the pumpkin and touch all of the goopy stuff inside. Maybe if the blonde asked reeeeaaally sweetly and the stars were aligned her mother would send some seeds from home? They always put cinnamon in and it tasted soo yummy! She would have to remember to send an owl away asking for the treat. Because the twelve year old was a self proclaimed candy addict, and the pumpkin seeds were like healthy, yummy candy.

Putting the pumpkin lid to the side, the second year rolled up her sleeves. Goop wasn't fun if it was all over your Hogwarts uniform, and while the kid loved to get messy, it wasn't something she wanted to deal with for the rest of the day. If it were home, Ophelia would be running around with mud on her face and arms, but now that she was at Hogwarts and her mom had said about REALLY behaving herself the whole year, the curly haired girl wasn't taking any chances.


Smiling as she did it, the Eagle began taking out the pumpkin guts and setting them aside, feeling like the twelve year old was doing incredible surgery instead of hallowing out a gourd. Maybe she could use the spell they just used to make the wand perform like a scalpel and get reeeeaallly precise. Could the small girl get a surgical style mask? It would really pull this all together. This is exactly what the doctor was talking to her parents about when he said about the dangers of having five kids with one nugget of a child so far apart from the others. She was the nugget.

Finishing with the pumpkin guts and knocking on the pumpkin twice for good measure, the small girl slid any excess pumpkin insides onto the pile and shook the small pieces, one of which landed on her eye. Luckily, it was closed. But still, ew. Wiping THAT off, Ophelia looked for the next thing to do.

Noticing the tense-air between Agatha and Professor Flamsteed, Zander decided to look away. At least the salute meant he was kind of forgiven, right? Hopefully. But anyways... He had an assignment to catch up on because he was starting to fall behind after helping Agatha with her pumpkin.

Staring up at the constellations above, and then looking back over at the list of them, the Gryffindor was stumped. Which one would he even do?! They all looked really hard to draw, which would make it even harder because a pumpkin wasn't even a flat surface like a piece of parchment was. So not only would he have to keep in mind that he had to actually want to write about it, he also had to make sure he could actually carve it, you know?

One of these things would be way harder than the other. Hint: It was the carving part. So instead, the Gryffindor glanced at the board one last time before looking down at his piece of parchment. He'd take care of the easy part first, yeah? OH YEAH and he wanted the dog one. Cause helloooooo, new Cruppy owner here.

SPOILER!!: Canis Major *la la la inserts blurb here*!!

Canis Major is a constellation that translates into “the greater dog” and if you connect the stars it even starts to look like one too. I think the coolest part about this constellation has to be that it has the brightest star in it, Sirius. Dogs are real great animals and one of their best traits is their loyalty. That’s why this constellation can probably be associated with shielding spells, making them more powerful if you used the two in combination. A dog really does anything for it’s human—I know because I have a cruppy, Professor— especially protect him or her. Besides strengthening the shield it’ll probably make it a lot brighter too, ‘cause you know… Brightest star and all that.

Just in the nick of time, one of the house elves came to clean Janelle's desk. Professor Flamsteed was explaining the big activity that they would be doing and she was all ears. Wow, he did find a way to connect Astronomy to pumpkin carving. This was going to be a lot of fun.

After Janelle updated her notes, she put down her quill and notebook. First she had to choose her constellation. That was a no brainer though. Of course she was going to go with Orion.......the one she knew the most about. Unfortunately that wasn't saying much. It was definitely time to consult the textbook. Janelle went into her bag and retrieved her book. Setting it on her lap, she opened it and searched for the pages she needed. Finding information on Orion, Janelle jotted down the important points that she would need to complete her assignment. When she was satisfied that she had what she needed, it was time to go to work.

Dot smudged a thumbprint of ink on the pumpkin to mark the brightest stars, followed by the pad of her index finger for the medium sized ones. And then the tips of her pinkies for the smallest ones, or the ones furthest out, maybe? She wasn't sure, and Dot wasn't going to slow down to do RESEARCH.

That's what Ravenclaw best friends were for.

Now that her stars were in place, Dot should do her cutting. She positioned her wand over the first print, a big one that she'd smudged on with her thumb, and she said, "Punktumus." Her wand sunk into the pumpkin's side, and she wiggled it around until the entire smudge had disappeared into the hole she'd created. She drew the wand straight back out and admired her handiwork.

Good hole. Excellent star. Moving on? She had more stars to carve out of her orangey heavens.

Beverly busied herself jotting down notes and making little stars on important points she overheard. This was all interesting but she'd much rather stargaze than talk about them. Either way, she was putting in work and taking her time making sure she understood. Putting her quill down she exchanged it for her wand. Punktumus. What a peculiar spell. She liked the sound of it.

"Punk-" hehe, "tumus." Yep, definitely liked this one. "Punktumus." A charm, she was skilled at those. "Punktumus."

Wand gripped firmly, pointed at the top of the pumpkin, Beverly traced her wand around, making an invisible rim around the stem. On the fourth round she finally cast, "Punktumus!"

Holding her wand firmly she cut, steady steady steady until, fwoop! the lid fell inside the pumpkin.

Now that he had which constellation he was working with, all that was left to do was do the actual carving, as well as the write-up afterwards. For this, Benny opened up his textbook and found the section where Pegasus was mentioned. It include, to his luck, a rather simple looking image which was an easier picture to try and copy onto the pumpkin's rounded and ridged surface. Hopefully the fact that the constellation consisted of mostly straight lines would help in the process.

But then again, he still had to focus with all that was going on around him. First a Ravenclaw seemed to have done something real bad and been threatened with point loss. Then a high-pitched shriek and trouble for a Slytherin. Could they have a calmer class please? What was with everybody causing trouble lately?

"Punktumus," Benny cast once he managed to concentrate clearly on the task at hand. The tip of his wand at the pumpkin and nearly dragged along the orange surface. He was trying for the main body of the constellation and before too long there was eventually a rough square-shaped carving present where he had been working. Well that was part of it done, the fifth year inspecting it and trying to decide the orientation of the rest of it.

Such a mess of orange, slick guts in there. She was familiar with it all thanks to her brother, who had a tradition of carving out pumpkins before Halloween. The pumpkin gut fights they had back when she was home tutored, they were epic...minus the part when it got into her eye. That hurt worse than a stubbed toe.

Sticking her hand inside, she took out the lid, setting it aside. Her fingers squished and squashed as they dug inside to tear the guts and seeds out. It was a slippery job, and most of it was slipping between her fingers, but it was getting done nonetheless.

Moments later, when there was pumpkin under her fingernails and her rings covered in it, she wiped her brow, probably getting a bit of orange on one of them. The desk was now a sticky place, but the inside of her pumpkin looked decent enough for the following task.

Question was...what constellation did she want to carve?

His pumpkin's duty. Sigh. Toby supposed that was right, but that didn't make him feel very good about it. It wasn't actually until Airey mentioned that it wouldn't feel a thing that Toby started to feel a little better about the whole thing. Yes... the pumpkin's duty... wouldn't feel a thing. Yes. Right.

Steeling himself slightly, Toby nodded at Professor Airey.

"Okay, thank you Professor," he said, with a salute for good measure. "I'll get started with Peter then." SENSE OF DUTY.

Now that all that was cleared up, Toby picked up his wand again, took a look around at everyone who was now waaaaaay ahead of him, and got to work.

"Punktumus." That was it, right? "Punktumus."

Okay. Alright. Okay. Time to do this. The pumpkin's duty. Wouldn't feel a thing.

"Punktumus," Toby finally cast properly, and moved his wand to the top of the pumpkin and pressed down, carving out a circle on top using his wand as a knife as Airey had done. He still winced a bit, even though Airey had said it was OKAY, but he still went ahead and did it. Soon the scent of pumpkin innards permeated the air even more intensely, as Toby removed what was now the lid and peered inside of it.

The Hufflepuff rolled up his sleeves then, so as not to get his uniform all icky and gross, and started scooping out the orange gunk and seeds with his bare hands. He placed it all riiiiight on the egde of his desk, because he could see the house elves scurrying around cleaning up after everyone, and the least he could do was make their job a little easier in case they got to it before he could vanish the mess.

Right then, next step.

As soon as he cleaned his hands. Yep.

"Punktumus," Dot was very careful on this last star, since it was so tiny and the tip of her wand was more likely to punch a big hole in the pumpkin. She created a sort of cone-shaped hole with just the tip, slowly excavating until she had juuuuuuuust broken through the wall of the pumpkin, and then she dropped her wand to the desk.

Done. Magnificent. Pleiades in pumpkin form.

Although aware that she was supposed to be writing a paragraph, Dot dropped into her seat and set about carefully cleaning pumpkin goop from her wand. Only when it was shiny and pulp-free did Dot move her pumpkin to the corner of her desk and pull out her quill, ink, and parchment. Ahem. Pleiades.

SPOILER!!: Pleiades the Pumpkin

Pleiades is a star cluster that is officially located in the constellation called Taurus. This star cluster is also known as the Seven Sisters, even though it has way more than just 7 stars in it. The cluster gets its name from a group of nymph girls who were part of Artemis' clique. Artemis is the queen of girl power, aka the goddess of avoiding romantic attachments, and her companions were all about girl power and avoiding attachments too. The hunter called Orion fell in love (or crazy boy crush) with the youngest sister, called Merope, and when she didn't return his crazy stalker crush feelings, he hunted all the sisters. This is not a normal reaction to rejection, btw. They were strong and unified, though, and eventually Zeus put them together in the sky so they could stay together. Orion still stalks them, because he's a boy and a creep, and for some reason Zeus let him go in the sky too. Rude.

I chose this star cluster because I would like to be all about girl power and devoid of romantic attachment. I want to develop strong female friendships and not care at all about what boys think of me, and that's what I think this star cluster might impart to me - an emotional shield spell against romance.

Kate smiled at the very sight of her pumpkin. It looked awesome if she did say so herself. She was so proud of it and hoped the professor liked it, too! She reached into her bag and pulled out a fresh piece of parchment and a quill. Sitting down next to her pumpkin, she began to write.

The constellation I chose to carve into my pumpkin is called Cepheus. Honestly, the main reason I chose it is because I think it looks like a cute, little house with a pretty flowerbed out front. Sure, it's a little crooked for a house, but it's still a cute constellation. Cepheus has seven main stars in it, and the brightest star is named Alpha Cephei. The constellation is named after a man named Cepheus, who was a King in Greek Mythology. I don't know this for sure, but I think the constellation has a magical power causing people to draw closer to their loved ones (hence the shape of a house it takes on). Maybe it has the power to lead you home after being gone too long. Those are the kinds of magic I think Cepheus might have had.

Kate re-read her paragraph then put down her quill. Okay, so that was it, right? She was done with the current directions? She thought so.

The constellation Cygnus is of a swan. The story is that Cygnus had a friend who had drowned. Cygnus was unable to reach him and became very sad. Even after his friends death Cygnus could still not reach his friend so Cygnus begged the God Zeus for help. Zeus changed Cygnus into a swan so he could dive down in the water deeper to free his friend and lay him to rest properly. This could mean that the caster could be able to dive in water much better than they normally would have. I diving spell could come in handy for someone searching for something or even saving someone before the drowned.

*Looking up from his writing he saw the professor rolling around in front of him. What was all that for? Then he saw it. The rat came running up looking beyond scared and confused, probably from all of the yelling. Moving in front of the professor Noah moved quickly and grabbed the rat. He didn't want the little guy to get stepped on or hurt.*

"Got em! Ow! Bugger bit me!"

*Noah growled at the little furry ball of teeth. Maybe he should have let the thing get stepped on. Picking up the top of his pumpkin he stuffed the rat in it and placed the top back on quickly. The holes in his pumpkin were too small for the little rat to get out so he was safe for the time being. Turning back to the professor he looked confused. This was a grown man, what was he getting all freaked out over? Noah was pretty sure that rats no longer carried the black death. Still everyone had a fear he guessed.*

Eventually, and with some difficulty and a little bit of pumpkin smudged onto his wand, Toby managed to clean off his hands with magic, which meant he was now all set to carry on with the main activity.

He already knew the constellation he would be carving into Peter his pumpkin; Ursa Major. It was Toby's favourite constellation mainly because it contained his favourite asterism (the Plough, or the Big Dipper), which was his favourite mainly because it was always the first set of stars he could find. And it helped him find Polaris, which reminded Toby of his first year and first set of Astronomy lessons, so Toby connected all sorts of good memories to it. So yeah... that one.

Rather than go ahead and start carving it straight away, Toby actually gave this one a little thought (which was more than could be said for most of his life choices and impulsive decisions). The Hufflepuff picked up his quill (which hadn't even been USED this lesson, worryingly) and stuck the feathered end into his ink pot. With his tongue poking out the corner of his mouth, and wearing a frown of concentration, Toby dabbed the ink on his pumpkin, trying to get the placement of the 'stars' right and consulting his textbook from time to time. There was a lot of rubbing ink off and re-drawing the dots on, so in the end Toby had essentially gone from being covered in pumpkin to being covered with ink instead.

But it was done, all drawn on and ready to be carved, but he should probably do the important researchy bit first, right? Yeah. Peter was very carefully placed off to one side and Toby pulled his textbook and parchment closer to get things researched and written down before the distraction of the pumpkin became too much to resist again.

Oh oh! The first thing she wanted to when she saw that the teacher was bitten by her rat Nabber was... Laughing! OH! This was so funny! She now REALLY loved her rat even more! This was just so cool! She could tell EVERYBODY that her rat had bitten a teacher! But.......... Instead of laughing like she wanted to she faked a shocked reaction and turned around to catch her rat, hoping that NOBODY would be stupid enough to touch her rat because... Her rat was just EVIL and would bite everybody who dared it to touch him and besides... It was HER rat and nobody was allowed to take what was hers!

And then she heard it, 15 points from Slytherin? NOOOO! This was just STUPID? Why had the professor asked her to empty her pocket? It was just unfair! It was his own fault that he was bitten! Eyeing the teacher dark after the point loss she tried to find her rat again. "NABBER! COME HERE AND DON'T ATTACK SOMEBODY ELSE!" Demanded she while she scanned the floor with her eyes, searching. But just when she spotted her rat, seeing how the animal wanted to run back to her, she saw... That the boy she had met during the summer had grabbed her rat?! WHAT WAS HE DOING!? "DONT TOUCH HIM!" Yelled Cahira angry when she saw what the boy did with her rat. Grabbing her rat back she pushed Nabber against her chest, looking worried... "Quick, hide before somebody will hurt you" whispered Cahira while she pushed her rat again in her pocket, staring back at the professor who was CLEARLY exaggerating this whole thing! And to give her detention because of this... It was JUST unfair!

Staring back at the boy she shook her head. "You're crazy to touch my rat like that? Do you want to die? He can bite you really badly" hissed she, irritated about EVERYTHING around her because of her point loss and detention! “It’s not the end of the world that he had bitten the professor but I don’t want him to attack other student’s without my permission” added she in a low voice to the boy, afraid that the professor would hear her.

"Any time, professor. I totally do custom work." Totally. She should start charging but he could pay her by bumping her grade up or something.

But ugh... let loose? No way. Did he not get the point that her nails couldn't be damaged?

...... aaaaand since he was now distracted doing other things and dealing with rats or whatever, Ruby just vanished the gunk rather than trying to dig in there.

Her nails were safe.

But now she had to choose a constellation, that part was harder.

Aaaahhh.. "Awesome." Pegasus, which was basically an Abraxon, right? Or no, they weren't white, Granian's? No... they were grey.. was a Pegasus a legit breed of flying horse? Could he have one? Never mind he preferred black, but white would look nice too. Hmmm... flying horses.

Snapping back to reality, Zeke turned his pumpkin so the constellation/cluster was facing her. "It's Hyades... or at least, it's supposed to be." Could she see it?



Was he sure? Sure he was sure! Zeke nodded, even trying on his signature grin in an effort to move the Professor along. Nothing to see here... nothing at all!



And in fact, he was more than happy to just get on with the task so that the lesson could and so he could leave.

Hyades. Hy-a-des... H Y A D E S. Yep... writing about Hyades any second now.

Zeke flipped through his text book, trying to get a grasp on the constellation/cluster which he by chance chose out of a whole list of others. Why was it that THIS ONE seemed hard? His concentration - even though it was lacking - was soon broken by loud Professor-like exclaimations of points being deducted and something about a rat.

A rat?

Where?

....

Sighing, he forced his eyes to his parchment and he started writing. Theory would be the end of him.



Half of what'd he'd written he was sure didn't make sense, and he wasn't even convinced it was true, he was mostly just drawing conclusions of his own. And, what was an 'open' star cluster???? Where was that in the textbook?

So now that he had taken care of the writing part... It was time for the real work. The carving work. Setting his piece of parchment to the-- Actually, it would help if he did a practice sketch right? Right. So the Gryffindor began doing a practice run incase because this was a very important task. He couldn't just mess up pumpkin carving in his OWLs year!! It just wasn't done. Nope.

Tilting his head side to side and STARING at his sketch... The Gryffindor shrugged slowly 'cause you know, it wasn't going to get any better than that. So taking his wand, he mumbled a quick, "Punktumus," and dug through the pumpkin much like he had the first time. Except this time around, he was actually trying to make it look good. The top didn't really matter all that much, but this was the real meat of the task. So it had to be perfect. Or as near perfect as he could even get it. Sigh.

After about ten minutes of vigorous constellation shaping, he finally had a finished product. Never mind that it resembled a basketball more than it did a pumpkin but la la la it was just the shape of his pumpkin okay. Welp. At least there wasn't an exam for art because he'd fail at that even worse than he'd fail at Runes. And THAT was saying something.

Angel was totally enjoying this but now she had to write about why this constellation was good and what was important about it and what it had to do with Magic which was going to be really hard because she had no idea, she had picked it by closing her eyes.

The Gemini constellation looks like two stick people who are having a dance, I think this shows you exactly why it is perfect for magic. To me it shows harmony and it shows that you can work together for the great good. The Gemini constellation is one of a few near each other and that once again is good because it shows that it can be part of a group.

I think that Gemini shows twins, which is very powerful in the magic world, if you have a twin wand then it would harm it's brother because it's has feeling and it also means that there are two of them which means that two heads are better than one. In conclusion I think that in magical terms Gemini is powerful and is very attractive to people.

Angel was trying to figure out what to do next when she suddenly heard the Professor, was Hookstead back or was the Professor just freaking out? Angel was a bit concerned with the way he was going on. "Professor, you alright?" Angel thought she might as well ask him, she wondered if he needed the healer or anything.

There done. Setting her wand down on her desk she sat back down in her chair correctly (she had been sitting on her knees) to survey her work. It wasn't all that bad really. With that done she could move onto the next step, which was writing about the constellation she had chosen.

Bending down to where her bag was near her feet she grabbed her textbook, parchment and quill setting them on her desk. Just as she flipped the textbook open she heard Zeke talking to her once more. "Yeah I guess. I didn't really know which one to choose." It was the truth really she hadn't making decisions.

As Zeke turned his pumpkin to show her she smiled at him. "That's really good." And it was. He'd done a nice job. Turning back to her work so she could get this finished she flipped through a few pages when she heard commotion in the room. The Professor was bitten by a rat?! Lifting her head and looking around her eyes landed on the younger Slytherin girl she'd met the other day screaming about her rat and such.

More points taken from her house. Again. Hady was to the point of slamming her head on her desk with annoyance and frustration. Rubbing her temple with her fingers she grabbed up her quill and began writing before she became to annoyed to work on it.

SPOILER!!: Hady's Pegasus Notes

Pegasus is the seventh in size out of the 88 constellations. It's brightest star is Epsilon Pegasi, a large orange star that makes the Pegasus' muzzle. It is located in the northern part of the sky and made up of nineteen stars. Pegasus is a large white winged horse that is thought to have magic powers. It is said that when it's hooves touch the ground a spring of water is made giving whoever drinks the water the power to write poetry. Therefore I think Pegasus would enhance any water magic. It might also help with air magic as well since it can fly.

Hugh tried really, really hard to figure out what everyone was carving, yo. But with his shot eyesight and his lack of information on what exactly they were doing...Hugh was just going to wing it.

Ugh. He really had to invest in paying more attention. But he needed constant stimulation. Anytime Professors explained things he would return to his own thoughts because he didn't find listening necessary. Save when stuff like this happened. Couldn't they just give them notes with instructions? He'd work so much better that way with his...special brand of tuning out.

Right. He figured that he needed to carve something. Everyone else was doing that, but to him they all looked like a random compilation of dots. And everyone kept staring at the constellations....


Oh.

That would make sense. Heh. SEE? Who said that paying strict attention to directions made it impossible to do work?

Hugh picked Gemini because twins. Nature was weirdddddd.

Okay, loads of talking, lots of scribbling, lots of information he probably wouldn't be able to read later on. Oliver had tried to write neatly so that he could read his notes when homework came along, but he was pretty sure that wasn't going to be possible. Now that the professor had finished talking, he just kind of stared at the scribbles and all he could make out at the moment was the incantation to carve the pumpkin...good enough for him. If it came down to it, he'd just meet with Professor Flamsteed after class and ask him to summarize whatever it is his notes were supposed to say.

Pulling his wand out of his bag, Ollie pulled the pumpkin close, placed the wand at a spot that seemed the right enough distance away, pushed a bit and said, "Punktumus," and the wand instantly became a sort of carving knife. HOW COOL??? It wasn't that he wasn't used to magic, but he still found it to be cool.

He moved his wand wand around the pumpkin and continued carving out the top of the pumpkin. Once he was done, he stared down inside of it and prepped himself for cleaning it out. Why did it have to look so gross?!

Spaceman was a liiiiiiittle OCD about his suits, wasn't he? Evie observed him carefully. She had already apologized, so she wasn't going to do it again. But she would clean up the mess on the board, since that was her fault. Evie briefly thought about asking a house elf to do it, since they would probably happily agree, but she didn't to risk losing points. If she had learned anything so far at Hogwarts, it was that students lost points MUCH easier than they gained them.

Evie got up from her seat and went to the board. She got out her wand and said, "Scourgify," a few times until the pumpkin guts were off the board. When she returned to her seat, she uttered "Punktumus," AGAIN to turn her wand into a knife and continued poking the constellation of Taurus into her pumpkin.

Once she was done with that, she flipped open her textbook to find more information on it so she could write down what Spaceman had asked them about...

Margo had just laid down her quill from writing her notes about the constellation. She felt good about it, her pumpkin looked great, she notes were done an now she could just coast into the end of the lesson. She survived another one. Margo was so hoping that Astronomy was going to be her best subject, but so far...ugh.....she's jus been okay....

Lost in her own thoughts all of sudden Margo heard a shriek and turned to see where the sound was coming from. Looking around seeing it was the Professor!! Holy Hippogriffs it was like a dog whistle it was so high pitch.

"Professor are you alright?" Margo asked, doing her best not to giggle. Apparently there was something abut rat involved? Not Margo's favorite pet of choice either, but hey, she wasn't one to judge. Pulling out a band aid from her pocket, Margo always carried them around with her. "Do you need a band aid Sir?" Margo asked offering her last one out of her pocket. She would need to restock that's for sure.
