As you near the Arithmancy classroom, you may feel the air begin to chill slightly. But don't worry, there are no dementors around. Upon entering the room you will instantly see the cause: true to form, Professor Tanner has opened the windows to allow in a crisp autumn breeze. Streaks of sunlight cross the room and fall upon freshly dusted desks, the chalkboard, and a small table with brightly colored pieces of paper. You should probably read the inscription on the board first, yes?

"Because name changes tend to correspond with big life changes or decisions, the new school of thought holds that your personality, values, habits, et cetera are impacted to an extent that would make calculations with your new name entirely appropriate."
"The view put forth by the rest of you is somewhere in the middle, using both calculations to gain a better picture of how the name-changing event affects your life. No one has yet, to my knowledge, come up with a mathematical rule for combining calculations with both names."

Gabe had been silent so far, working on his notes...making sure not to miss anything. The subject matter didn't really interest him...as it was about marriage and...Well, Gabe had nothing nice to say...and because his social cues didn't seem appropriate all the time, it was just best to remain quiet.
...and at the mention of hyphenating names, that got his attention. Actually, in the Ravenclaw's opinion, hyphenating was probably more efficient as...it included your birth name...and your new name. Mixing the old and the new...in a way. He quickly backtracked to add that bit in his notes.
Now...for the calculations bit. This wasn't hard for Gabe...as he loved dealing with numbers and calculating this and that. They were universal, which was their appeal. Math didn't change, no matter where you were doing it.
He looked to his sister...and began collecting his materials. Truth be told, he hadn't been that great of a big brother and yea, the guilt was strong. And she wasn't that well versed with the numbers like he was. Ruby would need his help...and that was okay. Gabe didn't mind. Of course, on his way over, he seen Kate...and she was a Claw and....eh, his responsibility?....Eeeeh...Gabe still didn't know what he...thought about this responsibility thing.
"This entry is what you should....go by." He carefully took her book and flipped the pages until finding what he was looking for. Pointing out the diagram, he nodded to himself. If the professor was talking about the Pythagorean Number System...that was it. "I hope that...helps. If.....you know.....need further....help?, I'll...help you."...but first he needed to check on Ruby. She tended to get overwhelmed with the Arithmancy stuff.
Sliding in next to said sister, Gabe began positioning his things again. "Don't look so scared."
She was pleased to see that her Prefect had taken Kate and Ruby under his wing. She moved on, knowing they were in capable hands.

Okay. So, nine. And that took a fair bit of scribbling out and making tally marks on the edge of his parchment but Toby was pretty sure that was more or less right. He looked back around at everyone else and tapped the feathered end of his quill on the desk out of fidgety habit. He was keeping an eye out for anyone looking confused, but he ALSO didn't want to impose on anyone who didn't need or want his help. It was hard to tell, so Toby just worked on making himself look as approachable as possible.
Tiara nodded approvingly. "Also well done, Mister Tempus."

Next up was Miss Andrews. "Everything looks good up until the very end. You need to reduce your 13." An easy fix.

When Janelle was finished, she hoped that she had done everything right. She looked at her work and then at he Professor's. Suddenly a question came to mind and she raised her hand. She had read about Master Numbers before and was wondering something.
"Professor Tanner, I was wondering......when you did your name.......you reduced 22 in your first name, but you didn't do it your final answer. I thought that you didn't ever reduce Master Numbers. So is it OK to do it sometime?"
She didn't quite finish looking over the next Guidry's work when she was being asked a question. "Perhaps I should have left it, but I prefer to reduce them mid-calculation. It provides a smaller number to work with and does not impact the outcome." Did that make sense?

Yeah. Right. Paying attention. Notes had been made about the topic of the name change issue and if it changed things when it came to their calculations based on Arithmancy. Kudos to Tobias for thinking of that because he certainly wouldn't have. The sixteen year old hadn't had anything to add or comment on -- surprising, wasn't it? -- so he stayed quiet.
Seeing as he was a Slytherin and FINALLY getting started, Grayson scribbled down the name 'Ginevra Molly Potter' before flipping his textbook open to the correct page. Trying to do this without using the textbook was HARD, man, and he wasn't up for putting his brain through that kinda headache. Besides, there wasn't much time left.

Okay so as Gryffindor he was to do the famous Hermione Granger with her unwed name. Benny wrote out the three names on his parchment, spacing them out so he could do the calculations beneath each of them. Then he turned to the page in the textbook as instructed and began filling in the numbers he would be needing to do said calculations.

Now there was the adding up and breaking down of the numbers in each group until he had it all laid out. He'd have to be careful of those master numbers too since sometimes he caught himself and didn't go lower and sometimes he slipped up and forgot. Ugg, they were running out of time as the Professor spoke up mentioning they only had a few more minutes, Benny did his best to finish up, hoping he had them all right. Her middle name was certainly the easiest.

Calculation time....woooooo. Caleb was usually pretty good at the simple matching-numbers-to-letters thing, so he wasn't too worried about it. It was just time consuming. Sigh.

So, time for the exploration. "The best calculation I can think of to test our theories would be the Expression Number, also known as the Destiny Number. Let me give you an example calculation, though you have seen this before." She turned to the board, writing her own name upon it.
"First give each letter its corresponding number from the Pythagorean System, found on page three of your textbook." She wrote each number under its letter. "Reduce each word down individually," she paused here to add up each word and get three totals, "and then combine those totals and reduce." Of course, she wasn't the best example of this because she had a Master, but that was not a big deal. They had spent a great deal of time on them last term. "As you can see, my Expression Number is the 22/4 Master Number."
"So, let's do some investigation using the divide and conquer method! Gryffindors, I would like for you to calculate the Expression Number for Hermione Jean Granger. Hufflepuffs, calculate for Hermione Jean Weasley. Ravenclaws, please take Ginevra Molly Weasley. Slytherins, you have Ginevra Molly Potter." Two very famous witches of which a great deal was known. "Raise your hand if you get stuck and I'll be happy to assist you. Older students help the younger students if they need it!"

Now onto the real part of the lesson. He looked at the board and he thought it all look gibberish to him. He gave it a quizzical look and shook his head and referred to his textbook. Now he was gonna do the calculations for Hermione Jean Weasley. He began to write it in his notebook.

Huh....I guess Arthimancy isn't so bad. He finished just when the Professor called out when they had a few minutes left. He hoped he did this right.

Dima was... having a little trouble with this. Despite Professor Tanner's example, it took him a little while to digest everything on the said page in his textbook, as sums weren't really his thing. After quite a bit of page flipping and scribbling, though, he had this much down:

Kate tapped her quill silently against her parchment. She stared at her work like she expected the numbers to just start calculating themselves. She fidgeted a bit, not sure what to do, until she was aware of somebody else standing next to her and flipping the pages of her book. At first, she thought it was the professor. Then she looked over to see that it was Gabe, one of her house prefects.
When he was done flipping and pointing out the page she should be looking at, Kate grinned and said, "Thanks, Gabe. I'll give it a try and let you know if I have any trouble," she said. It really didn't seem so hard now that she had the right page open. Kate noted that Gabe then went to the side of some older Slytherin girl. They were working and whispering about something Kate didn't think she was supposed to be in on. So instead, she focused on her parchment again and tried to match all the letters to the right numbers.

It was time for numbers, not her forte buuut it had to be done. She wrinkled her nose at the textbook as she flipped through the pages. Flipping from page to page, she stopped and skimmed the page on number system they were currently working on. Numbers, numbers, numbers. Why not dragons?
........Right, this wasn't creatures class. Bummer.
Taking her quill, she jotted down the name 'Ginevra Molly Potter.' Let the fun begin, yeah? Right.

Maybe. The Prefect didn't feel as confident in her numbers as she would in potions or ancient runes. So............revision was happening. Lots of it.
Maths time. Ew. Norah let out a long sigh as she pulled her textbook towards her and opened it to the designated page. Numbers numbers numbers la la la why did they all get all blendy and weird when she looked at them? DOUBLE SIGH. With a small shake of her head, the third year bent over her parchment and pushed a few curls from her eyes as she began to write her calculations.
PHEW. Norah leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. All these maths things were a real bother, and she could feel her head getting all fuzzy inside. Stupid head. She needed chocolate, and she needed it soon.
Angel blushed, she had been so eager to get on with thing that she must have misheard the Professor. "I'm sorry Professor." Angel hoped that she wasn't going to get into trouble for what she had done.
She put what she had done before she started to sort things out and she did the correct work.

A few deep breaths were taken and she tried to start completely over. Not that she had managed to get a lot done in the first place. Her quill scratched across her paper as she drew a line across the nonsense she had written down. Look at Adi over there managing to get things done. Did he not care? Had he moved on? Once Adi's eyes met hers, she quickly looked away and focused back on the name she was given. Aditya Rehman was not going to be the reason why she started to fail.
The third year heard the encouraging words from the professor and she was trying, okay? Finally, AJ was able to put the correct numbers with the letters. She knew she needed to add them all up, and there could only be one digit left. AJ was actually getting places. When she had all three numbers calculated for the name she added them all together and condensed it down until only one number remained. WOOT. She had done it after all. Her final number was 7, lucky number 7. Now her brain was no longer busy and thoughts of Adi came flooding back. Of course they did.

Maybe she didn't even want to know what that conversation he'd been having with that Slytherin girl was all about.
Kate waited while he checked over her work, and then she nodded in reply. "Okay. That's easy enough," she said. "Thanks again!" Now she'd be on her way.

He sat expectantly as Professor Tanner came to check over his work. Gulp. Thankfully though he HAD made some corrections to his initial calculations. He DID get there eventually. Offering her a small smile and a little shrug he said, "My head just wasn't in the game." Nor was it ever, really, if he was to be completely honest. Numbers got confusing, even when you had enough fingers.
While he was waiting, Zeke neatened up his work by titling his page. He wondered what the next part would be. Would they just be comparing the current results? Or would they have time to play with their own names? Either way, he was going to find out his options where names, destiny and life path numbers were concerned. Yep.
