quill Ancient Runes Lesson I : Loki & Shapeshifting



It was particularly warm inside the classroom. December brought with it the freezing weather that usually turned the old professor's knees to creaking, rusty joints. Hence, the classroom was warm, warmer than the rest of the castle. The desks were spread out in three rows as usual with name tags on them that assigned students to their chairs. A bunch of belts were piled on the side of Botros' big desk in front of the blackboard. The old man himself was standing and leaning sideways on his desk on the small dais, his cane was in his hand though he didn't need it for support.

Walk in, take a seat and keep the chatting to a minimum, this isn't your first Ancient Runes class this year so you already know that professor Botros doesn't appreciate loud chatter.
ooc: - Please familiarize yourself with this class' rules and guidelines before you post.
- As mentioned, this isn't the first class, your character should know the professor so please act like it. :)

Why was everyone so tired? Was it really that difficult to have a morning class? Hady didn't think so. Then again she was used to not sleeping well lately, you know with all the homework and classes and such. It was a lot for a kid to keep up with but so far this year she was doing alright.

Leaning her head back on her chair she turned her head to the side when she saw Zeke sit in the chair next to hers. "Morning." She greeted in return giving him a soft smile. He looked tired. Had he not slept well? "You seem tired, you okay?"

Ancient Runes. This was gonna be confusing, as usual. Norah gave Professor Botros a small smile as she entered the classroom, noting the warmth with appreciation. At least she wouldn't have to be freezing AND confused at the same time, which was always good, yep. "Good morning, Sir." Okay, so. Seat. Right. The third year slid into her seat and pulled out a piece of parchment and quill. Ready to go, over here! Except not really, because confusing remember? Very confusing. Why was she even here again? At least her head of house was a cool dude.

Ancient Runes. It was not one of Penelope's best subjects, but she found it interesting. Entering the classroom, she greeted the professor. "Good morning, Professor Botros." It was warm in the classroom, warmer than it had been in the corridor. Penelope went over to the seat with her nematic and sat down. She pulled out parchment and a quill, ready to take notes. There were a lot of belts on the professor's desk. What were they going to be doing with them? What runes would they focus on today? Penelope was eager to find out what they would be doing today.

Bambi had had a very good morning. She'd braved the horrible weather outside and managed to complete her jogging route without falling flat on her face - thank goodness for magic, right? - and had a warm, delicious shower. Then she'd happily realised she had extra time so she'd gone through her entire collection of jewelry and headbands to choose the perfect combination. AKA Bambi had had the perfect morning.

Striding into the classroom with a pleased smile on her face and sporting her navy blue headband with matching navy blue earrings, she selected a seat towards the middle of the classroom and promptly removed her scarf. It was warm in here. Then she nodded to the professor and looked around for people she knew.

Margo bounced in. She was never very good at ancient ruins, but Margo figured she better give it another try! So with effort she made her way into the Ancient Ruins class room. "Professor." Margo said with a smile.

That's when she noticed the belts, she wasn't sure what those were going to be for. Should be interesting. Taking her seat Margo waiting for the lesson to begin.

As the students started waltzing into the classroom, Botros smiled warmly (much like the atmosphere here) at them, greeting their sleepyheads back. "Good morning, dear. Good morning, son. Welcome to class." He repeated for one after the other.

Almost all of them had that groggy look on their faces, their feet dragging behind them. Oh what a lazy generation this one was! Botros shook his head at them playfully.

Abraham was getting a pretty clear idea about who were the ones who had breakfast this morning and were all charged up for class. "Nice guess, but no. Although I would be very impressed if you take that as an extra activity for this class!" Botros was beaming at the idea.

Now. The class seemed full so he waved his wand at the door closing it and stepped down from the dais carefully. "Happy holidays to you all, I hope you all made some productive and fun plans." Meanwhile, he was going to stay here and finish all the paperwork and other shifty documents. Not that he was complaining, sometimes he was eager to be in a quiet castle without the little ones, but he wouldn't admit this to anyone.

Anyway. Back to class. "A quick recap of Ancient Runes for the new ones." Even though their previous classes should be enough. "Runes are symbols we find in old places etched on old surfaces." It couldn't get any simpler than that. "They're magical. They have different uses in the Wizarding World." He turned to climb the dais again and write on the blackboard.

"Now. Runes, once they've taken magic from their surroundings, become magical independently. They can be used to strengthen our regular spells, for example, or maybe even stop them. They can also perform magical activities on their own." He smiled and nodded. "But that is something for advanced studies. Today, we'll talk about how runes multiply the power of our regular spells. We need to use the correct rune that corresponds best with the spell, depending on the runes' meaning." He went back to the blackboard. "For example, it's best to use the rune Isa with the spell Glacius, because the rune means ice."

AJ rubbed her eyes a few times to wake herself up. This was one of her weaker subjects, and being half asleep was not going to help her understand any better. For the most part she was still with Botros, but the lesson had just started which meant there was plenty of time to get lost. As for her, she was going to enjoy being on the same page while she still could.

Her textbook was definitely going to be needed. AJ flipped around until she found a rune that the could easily place with a spell that could make it stronger. No sense in working harder. AJ raised her hand, and waited to be called on. "There's the Sowulo rune which means sun, so I think you could put that together with the fire making spell incendio."

Ad EYED Kevin. He hadn't expected a detention with Professor Feline to do anything to improve the boy. "Watch your mouth,'' Adi said, all trace of grins gone from his face. He didn't mind nicknames but disrespectful ones? "I think you could do with a few more detentions with Quigley.'' Turning his attention from the rude Gryffindor, Adi had done so just in time to see a sleepy looking Benny make his entrance. He grinned, ready to greet the bestie but... the bestie ignored him. HOW RUDE. Hmph. "Sleepiness and nothing else,'' the Puffer told himself as he watched Benny sit. And there was AJ! She too looked sleepy. Adi returned her wave, wishing her seat was somewhat closer to his.

Ah. So that's what they were doing. While Adi made notes (and he needed to make as much of them as possible for this wasn't one of his stronger subjects), he thought about Rune meanings that he could remember off the top of his head and corresponding spells. None came to mind so he needed the help of his text book.

He scanned the meanings and then his eyes stopped at Wunjo. It meant 'joy'. Adi raised his hand. "Wunjo and the Cheering Charm, Professor.''

Fun fact about Ancient Runes: Bambi has never studied it a day in her life before she came to Hogwarts. It had seemed interesting though, which was why she'd chosen to take it on in addition to her other coursework. She'd heard it was very good to know runes, as they crossed over into many other types of magic and that had essentially made up her mind about the subject.

Now, however, she felt like a first year struggling to come up with answers. She read through the runes in her textbook, already somewhat familiar with them because she'd glanced at the book a few days ago, Bambi tried to figure out an answer to the professor's question.

Aha! Here's something that looked simple enough. "There's.. Algiz," where does the accent go on that rune anyway? She'd probably said it wrong, "which could be used with protection and defensive spells?" Logical, right?

Yes.. yes he was tired.

"I just want my bed... my eyes don't want to stay open." So even though he wasn't sleeeeepy sleepy... he needed eye rest. Yep. Not to mention his brain didn't much protest against the idea of switching off.

But alas the lesson was starting... and his eyes were still struggling to stay half open. Runes and magic though, like proper magic... that sounded interesting. Kinda. Maybe. He could at least pretend it did for the time being, give it a chance to get off the ground.

His textbook was out so that he could maybe even attempt at a response to the Professor's question, but Zeke wasn't holding his breath. Though, he could see where some of the other answers were going with things. He did think though that perhaps Lumos Solem was more appropriate than Incendio where Sowilo was concerned. Hands up, he offered his own example. "What about Laguz and Aguamenti, Professor?" he asked, considering both were to do with water.

Hady smiled softly at her lion friend a look of understanding showing in her eyes. She knew what it was like to be tired and want nothing more then to just sleep. It's exactly how she felt everyday for the last few months, the only difference for her being that she hid it well.

Before she could say anything back to Zeke though the Professor had started talking. It was time to pay as close attention as she could. She needed to focus right now as Runes wasn't her thing. In fact Hady was terrible at the subject. No matter how hard she tried, how much she studied she just didn't understand any of it.

So when the question about runes and charms working together was asked she kept completely silent. She honestly had no idea but to not appear completely stupid the twelve year old pulled out her parchment and quill taking down all the notes as they appeared on the board. When she finished that she opened her textbook to see what it had to say about the question.

Ah, so that was what they would be doing this lesson. Lux thought that sounded pretty interesting, and as she took notes tried to think of an example.

It was so nice and warm here, that it made her think of fire, which reminded her of one of the classes from her Third Year. Raising her hand she said, "Kenaz and Incendio." That had come in handy for cooking.

Norah picked up her quill with lethargic slowness when Professor Botros jumped right into class. So, pretty much right into all the stuff she didn't know. Always grateful for review, the third year wrote down the initial recap of runes, which was about the extent of what she could remember about this class anyway.

Runes and spells? Um. Okay? By the time Norah was finished writing down everything on the board, people were already answering the question. Oh well, wasn't like they were stealing any of her ideas, considering she didn't have any. Y'know this class should just be called 'How to Become a Teenager' 'cause so far it was the most easiest way to get mopey. The thirteen year old flipped the pages of her textbook one by one with her head resting on her other hand. Sigh.

The sudden closing of the classroom door, though not loud, was a sharp enough sound to jerk Toby back into the land of the living, and the sixth year suddenly shot straight up in his seat. He blinked up at the professor, trying to get his head in the game, and listened as he got out the rest of his supplies and started taking notes.

Mercifully, Toby found it easy enough to follow what Professor Botros was saying. He drummed his fingers sleepily on the cover of his textbook, but did not open it as he thought of and answer. Eventually, Toby raised his hand.

"Sowilo means 'sun'," he began, glancing towards the Gyrffindor girl who'd started with the same idea. "And... could you maybe argue that you could use it with Lumos, to create light? Because of the whole sun thing and because the rune represents positive energy and good stuff and all, and a lot of people associate, like... creating light to counter the dark, figuratively as well as literally. Maybe?"

Toby lowered his hand again and rubbed a balled up fist at one of his tired eyes. Next time he had a class this early, this Hufflepuff would be loading up on coffee beforehand. Yep.

Ummm......what? That was really how Margo felt at every ancient runes lesson. She wasn't sure how to even respond...... grabbing her text book to try and find an example and doing her best to focus. She wasn't sure if she was doing this right.

Margo was drawing a blank.....for the first time Margo kept her hand down....she really didn't know what to do.....

Angel looked at the Professor and raised her hand, all the one she knew where already gone, so she thought she would have tried that. "How about Hagalaz and a spell to do with the weather?" Angel wasn't 100% sure about that but she thought she would give it a try and hope for the best, it was totally a wild guess.

Apparently his papa had been good at Runes back when he was a student but Kyroh was starting to think that being good at a subject was not hereditary. The third year blinked completely confused and he quickly started to flip through his textbook.

Okay so. Runes. Runes helped to strengthen spells. Which they could help in the OBVIOUS form but....how about the non-obvious? Hesitantly the Ravenclaw raised his hand. "Professor? I know it's kind of...maybe a little out there but could....uh Ot-ha..la-Othala be used for the Four-Point Spell? Especially if you were really trying to find your way?"

Beverly glanced around the room at some of her classmates. Was it just her or they seemed tired? She had dodged a jinx there, having taken her potion before bed last time. Yep. She was energized and already jotting down notes.

Upon the question being asked, the Slytherin set her quill down and raised her hand, contributing to what Lux had mentioned.

"As well as working with Incendio, Kenaz can also be partnered up with Bluebell Flames." You know, since it was still fire and it could be used as light and a torch. Although, it didn't burn people, it could still set objects on fire.

Kace heard the Professor was moving on and he saw Bostros as always making notes on his board. He began to scribble them down and always liked his lessons. After he was done copying and got the right amount of notes, he looked up just in time to hear Bostros ask a question. Kace thought about it and looked through his book.

He raised his hand and offered an answer, "Professor I think Uruz since it deals with healing it could be used with the Reparo charm?" It was just a guess but if he was wrong, he was wrong.

It was question time. Janelle really needed to get quicker with her answers because most of the good ones were already taken. She really had to think for a moment because she had to come up with something". After a while, Janelle had an answer. She wasn't sure if it was right or not, but she was going to give it a try.

Janelle raised her hand, prepared to take her shot. When it was her turn, she went for it. "Could Sowilo be used with the Hot Air charm? It has to do with the sun and the sun is hot. The sun can warm you so maybe it can help someone get dry faster by heating the air faster." It could happen, right?

Dot felt like her brain was dribbling out her ears, and she actually paused to bang her head against her book, just in case osmosis was a thing. Just push some of the book knowledge into her brain, okay? She'd asked him to take it slow and everything.

This was why Dot wasn't a Ravenclaw. Sigh.

Even though she was still struggling with what the heck a RUNE even was, Dot flipped gamely through the book (skipping over the head print she'd left). What spell could she improve upon by using one of these rune things? HMM?

"Um. Professor? Maybe... maybe you could cast this Haz... Hagalaz with Stupefy? Because it's about disrupting or stopping something? So... " Maybe he could come over and give her a hug now? Because her brain was MELTING, sir.

So it had to be the correct rune biased on the meaning? Seemed simple enough. But then, runes could be deceiving like that. Simple one second and hard the next.

Heather flipped her textbook open to the list of runes and their meanings and looked it over. At first, nothing jumped out at her as being a good match for any spell. But the longer she looked, well, there it was. "Kenaz could be used with Lumos, since kenaz means torch and Lumos basically turns your wand into one." Unless kenaz was talking about torching something, in which case it would be Incendio. But she thought her original answer was the correct one.
