Default The Planetarium

Located off to the right of the Observatory and behind a large wooden door lies a room made possible by means of a powerful Undetectable Extension Charm. Professor Flamsteed will hold the occasional lesson, present an educational and entertaining show about astronomy and the night sky, or a training session in celestial navigation here, but it is also available to students to use at their own leisure for research or entertainment purposes.
Professor Flamsteed just has a few guidelines for use of the planetarium:
  • ABSOLUTELY no food or drink
  • be respectful of the equipment
  • NO SNOGGING

Default Hayden!
Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE!

Kate had no idea what she would find in the Astronomy Tower, so she opened the first random door she found and hoped Hayden was still following her, since she had long ago stopped pulling the girl along.

But what a room!

Jaw dropping, Kate looked around, looked up at how high the ceiling was, and just sort of stared. Who cared if she got a crick in her neck? This room was awesome. Since her mouth was already open, she tried to think of something to say, but nothing came to mind. There were no words for how spacious this room was. She was pretty sure it was a planetarium. A giant planetarium in a tower in a castle. So. Cool. Her brother would be so jealous.

Still speechless, Kate glanced at Hayden to see what her new friend thought of the planetarium. Hopefully she'd have something to say.

Woah. Hayden followed Kate up, and up, and up…and up until they reached the very top of Hogwarts. That was a long ways. As they climbed up more and more staircases, Hayden was getting more and more out of breath. Finally they reached their destination. It was a The Planetarium, which was interesting. Hayden admired the the equipment for a moment, taking in her surroundings. Astronomy wasn't her preferred subject, but it sure was pretty.

"Do you like Astronomy?" Hayden asked Kate. She might not know yet considering they weren't far into the school year and she hadn't been raised knowing about the subject. The Planetarium looked like a good place to just hang out and talk, which could be fun. Hayden wanted to get to know her new friend while they were exploring.

Kate just… she just couldn't. No. She wanted to sit on the floor and turn on the stars and move into this room instead of the Ravenclaw girls' dorms. It would be like sleeping outside, but with climate control. And no bugs. She grinned.

"Do I like Astronomy?" Kate repeated the question. She didn't need clarification. "I know almost all the constellations. My favorite is the Pleides. The story is, the seven daughters of Atlas and somebody else were so beautiful that some guy kept chasing them. To help them out, Zeus turned them into birds and then they flew away and hid in the sky where no boys would ever think to look for them." She wasn't trying to brag or show off, she just really liked the stories behind the constellations. And this one was such a great story, about how girls were better than boys and siblings should stick together.

"I wish I had sisters. I just have a buncha brothers." Kate pouted a little.

"Wow that sounds cool, you must like Astronomy a lot." Hayden was impressed that Kate knew stories about the constellations. She seemed really knowledgeable about the topic, and she was only a first year. Hayden herself didn't like Astronomy much. To be honest, it didn't make much sense to her. Not like spell work classes did.

"How many brothers do you have?" How many brothers was average? Did Kate have more brothers, and less sisters, than the average person? Or was she just sad that she didn't have any sisters? Hayden was curious, and she liked learning more about her new friend.

Kate nodded. Yup. She liked astronomy, thanks to her oldest brother and his science-y-ness. But how many brothers did she have? Kate sighed. She had too many brothers. "Four." Two too many. Not that she disliked any of her brothers, but she had her favorites, and those middle children just weren't as nice to her. "Do you have any siblings? Or pets? I always wanted to have a pet, but my dad says they breed disease."

Wow, four was a lot. Well, at least Hayden thought so. She wasn't sure what the average number of siblings in general but in Kate's family there were five total, apparently. And then Hayden was being asked a question about her own. But wait, she needed to ask a question first. "Would you say Astronomy is your favorite subject?" Okay, now they could move on.

"I'm an only child," Hayden answered. "What's it like having siblings?" She'd witnessed siblings together several times, but sometimes they fought constantly and sometimes they acted like best friends. It depended on the people, probably. So she wondered how Kate and her brothers got along. "No pets either. Well we have an aquarium in the kitchen but fish don't really count because they don't require much work. I've never had a dog or a cat or anything." She didn't know why, her parents just must not have wanted one. "If you could, what kind of pet would you get?"

Was astronomy her favorite subject? Kate didn't really know. Sure, she liked learning about constellation stories and how space worked, but there were so many other things to learn. Like history and spells and stuff. Kate shrugged. "Maybe for now, but I just like learning everything!" Mostly in books, though. Sitting through hours and hours of lectures wasn't as much fun as reading in books.

Hayden was really into the questions and answers, Kate thought. "Having siblings is great! It's like built-in friends! They pick on you a lot, but they also defend you and don't let anyone else pick on you. My oldest brother likes to show me how to build things. We have paper airplane contests, but he doesn't like it when I try to hang out with his friends. And my other brothers let me play sports with them, especially if their friends are over and they have an odd number." Ahh, and her closest brother. They were homework buddies. Kate usually had to help him out, even though he was a little bit older. She hoped he'd do okay in school without her.

And as to what kind of pet she wanted, that was easy. "I want a dog. It'd be like having another brother, but he'd be willing to hang out with me anytime I want instead of only sometimes."

"What's it like being an only child?"

Hayden nodded. It made sense that Kate wouldn't exactly know what her favorite subject was yet. It was still very close to the beginning of the year. Hayden didn't really know her own favorite subject either, she had theories but none that had really been tested yet. (Except Care of Magical Creatures, she knew she didn't like that.)

Hayden took note of the information Kate was feeding her about siblings. She'd never been able to experience any of that herself, not on the same level. She had cousins and other family members, but that wasn't really the same. Not even with the ones she was close to. "It's kind of lonely sometimes," she said in response to Kate's question. "I don't have anyone I can really talk to. No older siblings to teach me about the world, or even pick on me but I suppose that's okay. I have cousins, some that I'm really close to even but it's not the same. The cousin I'm closest to is a muggle so I have to hide so much I feel like I'm lying all the time. It can be hard." Wow that sounded depressing. Hayden didn't like being sad because it was an infectious feeling that didn't go away. So she tried to stop it and turn the conversation cheerful again.

"It can be good though too. I can be really spoiled because my parents don't have anyone else to buy presents for." Grandparents either. The rich ones at least. But that grandma only bought her books, which could be nice sometimes but some of them were way too boring for an eleven-year-old. Luckily for her, grandpa always snuck her treats and stuff.

Kate frowned. Being an only child sounded really sad. Hayden's only child-ness made her especially glad to have her brothers, even if she couldn't tell them anything about Hogwarts or her new classes. Despite not really knowing her cousins, Kate imagined that one day she'd be able to relate to the feeling like she was lying part of her relationship with the cousin. Knowing about magic was still new to Kate, but she figured it would get tough when she graduated and had a magical life all the time. How would she relate to her brothers then?

"Sometimes I get spoiled because I'm the only girl!" And sometimes she got hand-me-down bikes and coats. It was like the best of everything, being set apart as the only girl but also having four siblings. "I think when you grow up having siblings doesn't matter as much. Because you have to make effort to see your siblings just like you do for people you want to be friends with."

All of this talking about siblings and family was making Kate want to write a letter to her brothers. She really missed them when she had time to think about it.

That was a good point. Hayden hadn't thought of that before, about the siblings when you're older. Though that reasoning didn't really affect her at the moment because she was only eleven, it was a good point nonetheless. As she got older it probably wouldn't matter as much if she had siblings or not because her life wouldn't be that much different than people who actually had siblings.

What time was it? Hayden knew it was after class, and it was before curfew but she didn't know the exact time. She didn't even know what time it had been when she first met Kate. She wasn't very good at things like keeping track of time. "I think it's getting late," she said casually, but it was also sort of a question. Was it getting late? Probably. Maybe Kate was a better timekeeper.

Getting late? Really? What time was it? Kate pushed up her left sleeve so she could see her watch that she wore but never really looked at. Oh. It was getting late. Especially because there was a curfew and Kate was likely to get lost on her way back to the common room (she had gotten lost every time she'd tried to find the common room on her own thus far). "It is kind of late. We should probably go."

After all, they didn't want to get in trouble so early in the school year. Kate led the way to the planetarium door so they could return to their respective common rooms.

Someone was in a stargazing mood, however, it was mid-afternoon and it was incredibly cold outside, it'd be colder at night, so there was no way she'd be stargazing in the Observatory today. Also, she'd been intrigued about something. Something Lotus could only find out in here. The Observatory wouldn't help.

Maybe she'd been spending too much time with Vesper, or maybe she was entirely curious when it came to Astronomy. Either way, there was something she'd been curious about and last year Airey had taught her how to use the planetarium.

It wasn't really that difficult, and she almost offered to help him out when... he didn't seem to know how to enter the required info. So, technically, she had known how to use this before that session, that's how much attention she pays to you, Airey Flamsteed.

So, she placed her bag on one of the seats and started to set up the entire thing. Date first, right?

So Tag had received a message, and by 'receive' we mean he was told by Lottie, to meet her up in the planetarium. He'd never been here before, but he knew it had to be somewhere in the seventh floor. Planet, stars, astronomy, anyone? Yes, definitely on the seventh floor.

Eventually the boy found the room, stepped inside and stopped mid-step. Ok. This place looked pretty cool, to be honest. Though Tag really had no idea what would be happening here. After standing on his tip toes a bit the blonde finally saw his girlfriend and walked over to her. And she was busy doing something with her bag.

"Hello, girlfriend." He said with a smile. "What's going on?" Point point point at all the things.

Her eyes immediately went to the person who entered the room. It could only be him, you know? Anyone else would've said something by now. "Hey, Tag," she smiled, adding one final number to the date the planetarium out to show her. ALL the controls, Flamsteed. Couldn't this device be any simpler? This is 2083, after all. Albeit, it was faaaar simpler than the control rooms at NASA in 1983. But still.

What was going on? "I wanted to stargaze, but I wouldn't be able to see anything at this time." Not even the sun, because soon-to-be winter messes a few things. Nothing was going on, really, except, "I also decided to share something with you, so just...," she eyed the device for a moment, and only for a moment she felt she was cheating on Flamsteed somehow, "...try not to touch anything, okay?" You could play with any control, or remote control, or whatever, any other day, just not today. "Unless I tell you." It'll probably won't happen, proooobably, no way of knowing.

Also, "Hi." Smile, again.

Alright, that's it. Tag would be taking his seat. He just nodded at his girlfriend and watched her punch in random numbers and letters and what not. Whatever she was doing, it was making Tag confused.

Right. Of course. Stargaze, Tag should've been expecting it you know. Future astrophysics person over here. "Of course not. The sun is out...technically its in... and its somewhat cloudy. Smart move. Am I going to be tested?" Please don't tell him that. He hadn't been researching stars, instead reading, dun dun dun. She was sharing something with him? What? The universe? That was quite a thing to share, you know. She had to think a little smaller. Then, was he being told not what to do? As if he couldn't restrain himself from things he wasn't supposed to do. "I can't believe you don't think I can keep my hands off things that they aren't supposed to be on. I'm hurt." Tag said, pretending to be taken aback by her words. He wasn't.

And of course, unless he was instructed to do something then he'd do it, but as of now, he was being held back in his curiosity. It wouldn't be long before something was bound to happen.

"Hello, girlfriend." He said, patting her head.

Default Astronomy Homework 1.1
Dani's Citrus Duck Spawn | Mama Giraffe | Lemon PATch | Pushed the Red Button

He was no good at this subject, so Dima had opted not to do this assignment with a friend and save himself the embarrassment. There were no pets in his possession either, but he'd made himself a really spiffy paper toad. It had sat quietly on his head all the while he gathered materials, and the kid had grown quite fond of it.

What? Didn't Professor Top Hat have a pet rock? It was FINE.

Along with his homemade audience, he also carried with him an especially fat watermelon. It had a thick black line drawn around it (fake equator for the win!) as well as a long stick running vertically through its juicy inside. That was been the axis on which his precious Earth!fruit rotated. The item had been put together in his dorm, though Dima had eventually decided to give his demonstration elsewhere. Maybe it was the astronomical influence or something, but the Planetarium seemed like the BEST spot.

And it wasn't too far. Arriving at his destination in minutes, he at once began setting up. His paper toad was set in a seat on one side of the room while the little Eagle traveled to the other, climbing atop his own chair and drawing his wand. Game face on. Culloden's potion had really helped him with learning new spells, and Dima had even gotten to learn some more advanced spells, one of which he was about to perform. For... a piece of paper. Which was good enough for him!

"Lumos Maxima!" As he spoke the incantation, he flicked his wand, drew it back, and flicked again. The movements were a little shaky but still sufficient, as a blinding flash of white light had appeared at his wand tip. He gave the wand another flick, and the orb went flying away, floating in the air before him.

Ta-da! Lo and behold, a sun.

NOW he was ready. "Good evening, Mr. Toadsworth," he greeted his paper pet, going so far as to bow. In character here! "I assume you know who I am- Dmitriy Toussaint, professor of... er...... space stuff! We have gathered here today so that I may share with you a recent discovery I have... um, discovered..... about space stuff-ish Earth stuff!" Official, wasn't he? He thought so. Raising his watermelon, Dima beamed at the toad. He HAD this, okay?

The tiny Toussaint pointed with an even tinier finger. "THIS is Earth and THIS is it's equator. The line going through the planet is the axis which it rotates on." Not knowing fancy spells like Flamsteed had, he just spun it around with his hands. "But the axis' daddy wasn't tough on the axis and didn't STRAIGHTEN him OUT, so he's all tilted. 23 and something something degrees, see?" Did he see? Was Mr. Toadsworth understanding? Dima tilted his watermelon for the pet's benefit before continuing.

"How much light the sun gives off doesn't change, but more light hits the spots that are tilted toward the sun now! So the part not near the sun experiences winter," Dima stuck the watermelon in the vicinity of his light orb and pointed at the shadowy part, making a frowny face, "and the part tilted at the sun is in summer!" He fanned himself. Whew.

Parading around in his chair for a bit so that his watermelon could 'orbit' the sun, Dima soon began cheering for himself 'cause Mr. Toadsworth wouldn't. And he continued to do so until his light source died.

Productive demonstration, huh?

No need to worry, this wasn't like their lessons, though it kinda was, but not quite. For one, they were inside, not outside. And there was nothing to eat either because... remember the no food rule? Yes, she listens, Airey Flamsteed.

Lotus was smiling, however, his words made her smirk a little. The sun was inside, you know? Her smirk only grew as she considered testing him for real, BUT... she shook her head, "No, you're no longer taking Astronomy, remember?" Also, they weren't going to study until January, so no tests whatsoever. Technically, she was always sharing things with him, he shouldn't be surprised. Basically, yes, the universe. Only not really because it'd be so confusing for him. We're not even discussing black holes or any other anomaly, that'd be one difficult topic to grasp. Other worlds and timelines, it's a lot. This is were Star Wars and Star Trek differ.

Sorry, but she had to laugh at that. Loudly, too. Speaking of hands, one of hers went up only to blow a kiss at him, "Don't be hurt. It's a precautionary measure, that's all." But he knew she was right in doing so.

"You know, even if we've seen the sky on my birthday...," mostly fireworks, but still, "..I've never truly seen it. So, that's what I want to do. I believe I can go back to when I was born with this." She wasn't too old, Botros' date was probably not registered here. She had her reasons for doing this, mainly because she'd have to wait too long for them to do this together. "I mean, the sky, I'm not going back." She laughed at that, softly.

For some reason, she thought she should clear that up.

Why was she smirking? Tag shouldn't question it, it was something she would always do and something she always did. "I'm not taking astronomy." Thank god, can you imagine all the headaches? "But I am dating a future astrophysics person over here so I need to know the basics." Truth. What if Lottie decided to randomly test him one day.

Always with the laughter. You know when she laughed like that it usually embarrassed Tag. Mhm. She already knew this. An, just to play along Tag pretended to catch that kiss. But he didn't know what to do with it so he just opened his hand. Did the kiss just float away to the ground? "I'm not hurt at all." Not even a little bit. Its not like she was trusting her life with whatever she was doing.

So they were going to be looking at the sky when she was born? If that's what Tag got out of it. "We're going back to when you were born? Like, we're going to be seeing the sky you had when you were born?" That sounded a bit interesting. Which raised a question in Tag. "Does that mean we'll be seeing the libra constellation?" Yes? No? Maybe so?

'Not going back.' Was Lottie clearing up that she wasn't going to go through a Benjamin Button process? Because that could be cute. Seeing an ickle Lottie. As in, 'before Hogwarts' ickle.

Yes, exactly, she knew. And she was quite grateful she didn't have to see him during the lessons, it was one thing to mention the sun without Tag in the room... and another one to mention it with him there. "I know." She smiled, and blushed almost immediately at his next words. Seriously, Tag. "We don't know that yet. I haven't talked to Airey, actually." Future, though. The future was so incredibly unknown, yet...

...hey, it's called Astrophysicist, you know?

Now she was beaming at him, and okay, so he wasn't hurt. Excellent! He could still keep the kiss. Wherever it was.

Er, what? That was one slightly complicated way of putting it, so she spoke up, "What the sky looked like when I was born. Or close to how it looks every 1st of October." It had differed over the years, probably, but 17 years isn't too long for there to be a significant change. Unless some stars had died. But that was not the case. "That...," she blinked, Libra? Oh, "...I don't think Libra is visible. If you're referring to the zodiac, that's the constellation where the sun was positioned during that time. Libra would be in the sky, just not visible for us." And obviously not during the day. It wasn't even visible mid-October, otherwise she would've pointed out. They would've been able to see it in August, but they hadn't been looking for it back then.

Either way, "You should recognize part of the sky if you remember mid-October." It was a bit over a year ago, it was fine if he didn't even remember Polaris.

And she pressed the final button, making the desirable sky appear up there. This was as close to traveling back in time could get. Nothing more. Nothing less. Her eyes were on the control pad, instead of the stars, she could make the moon's luminosity fade like Airey had, but... eyes on the sky (fake one, but still), "Anything familiar?" That question was for Tag, of course.

And Lottie was turning red. Excellent. Tag almost wanted to point it out but he didn't. She was being somewhat of a teacher? Professor? here today and if Tag pointed it out, Lottie may become distracted and not remember what she was meant to be doing. So, Tag just smiled back at his girlfriend. "Well, whether you're going to be one or not, I think just the thought of it tells me you're considering astronomy. No matter what aspect it may be in. An, go talk to him, as soon as possible." After Hogwarts stuff was tricky to figure out. Tag thought he had it all done but he was still unsure of what to do next.

Nope, Tag didn't know.

Tag listened to how Lottie explained what they were going to be doing today, then he nodded. "I think that's what I meant. I probably just worded it weirdly or made it sound more complicated than it really was." He said. The blonde had a tendency to do that every now and then. Libra, the zodiac, yep, that's what Tag had been referring to. "How come? Is it in the Southern hemisphere, then?" Was that it? Or was that only with that really bright star Lottie had mentioned last summer?

Mid october. Of course Tag remembered mid october, but he just nodded at his girlfriend's words and made a mental note to try and really pay attention and remember things.

And then stuff was happening inside the planetarium. Stars started to appear, yep. Ok, now Lottie's question. Constellations, that's what she was asking about, right? All right. Tag glanced all over the ceiling, trying to take a good look at the 'sky'. "Ummm, there? Is that draco?" He said pointing at the stars that hopefully made up the constellation. It had to be. He'd seen that twice already. Nothing else seemed remotely familiar to him.

No teacher, no professor. She was being Lottie today. But this didn't mean she wouldn't become distracted by any comment on her oh-so-obvious blushing. So, thank you for not commenting on it. A smile went his way. "It is Astronomy. I'm just not sure which path to take." Lotus was particularly fond of Astrophysics, though, that's why she'd told Tag there was a chance of it being the chosen one. We'll see, though. "I will, I will." Maybe after the holidays.

Her smiled only widened, and she nodded once. Got it. That's what he'd meant, she was clarifying just in case. "It's okay." OH MERLIN. What? She almost bounced at those words. Look at him speaking with proper terms and all. Granted, this happened all the time, but still. Beaming. "It's visible there, yes. But it's visible for us at certain times, between January and April." If he wanted a more detailed explanation she could bring out star charts from those months or put in the date into the projector, though she doubted he wanted to.

That constellation wasn't her favorite as important as others, for her.

Oh, thank God. Her time was not wasted. She nodded at her boyfriend, "Close enough, that one last star doesn't belong to Draco," but Tag had successfully identified most of it! And that was amazing. Brilliant, really. "Can you spot a planet?" Should be easy, really, there were three of them up there. Jupiter was the brightest of them all.

There came nods when Lotus mentioned that she didn't know exactly what she wanted to look into when it came to astronomy. Completely understandable. It was a big decision. "Just think everything through and choose the one that appeals to you the most." He said. It didn't sound like the best of advice but it was all Tag had. "If you need help or something..." Airey, of course, would be a first choice, but Tag was willing to help in whatever way he could. "Good. I'll make sure you do." Get to talking with Airey, that is.

An, whatever Lottie was doing it only meant something had made her clearly excited. This is astronomy, so Tag should be expecting some type of fangirling every now and then, so, yes, nothing would be mentioned on her reaction. "Oh, ok. That makes sense, I suppose. Do you know when its visible to us during those months? And, question, do stars always stay in the same hemisphere forever or do they change according to the seasons?" Did seasons affect star positions?

Nods nods. The last star didn't belong to Draco, apparently, but hey, at least Tag had actually found the constellation nearly right off the bat. That was good. Very good. "A planet?" WELL. Tag was no genius here, especially when it came to astronomy. He glanced the ceiling some more and just shook his head. "No. We've never discussed planets. Besides disco planets, so I don't know what they look like. How to find them." Would that be a problem for today?

Another smile went his way. That's what Lottie was best at, thinking. So, this wouldn't be a problem at all. And she never did something unless she wanted to... or unless she was forced to, like in detention or anything relatively similar. Her decision should be a fairly easy one to make. "Of course!" Quickly, very quickly, she leaned toward him and kissed his cheek, "Thank you, boyfriend." It'll be fine. However, what did that mean, exactly? Was he going to take her to Airey's office and won't leave until she talked things out with the Professor? Hopefully not. Lotus nodded, eyeing him curiously. No, he wouldn't dare, she'll go after the holidays.

Yes! This is Astronomy! Some fangirling was bound to happen, eventually. Fair question. "After midnight," answered the sixth year. Much like Orion in late August, which they got to see before midnight in October. As quickly as she had fangirled, she sighed. What? The stars stay where, Tag? "We're in constant motion." Did she have to explain the heliocentric model? He already knew this. "The entire universe is." Tag should've been in Airey's last class, though. "But the Earth's translation around the sun, the rotation around its own axis and the slight inclination of that axis, make it possible for all the stars to be seen throughout the year from different places." Was that too much? Maybe they should stop or could they go on? She won't make anymore explanations, promise.

What did the seasons have to do with the stars? Leaving aside the Earth's movements... nothing.

Oh. Well, but he did know, because they've talked about it. Haven't they? The first time they stargazed? Was that too long ago? Okay, she could explain, "You know how stars appear to twinkle?" She hated making that description, but it's the easiest one ever. "Planets do not." Simple, really. "Do you see anything that seems fixed? Not twinkling?" Her eyes were on him instead of the sky, she knew where the planets were. Now, could Tag spot one without help?

Quickly, very quickly, she leaned toward him and kissed his cheek, "Thank you, boyfriend." It'll be fine.

"You're welcome. I'll be here for you." He said with a smile. She knew this, but it felt right to say, anyway. Tag would not physically drag Lottie to Airey's office, just simply nag her about meeting up with him and have this so called conversation. But he'd definitely walk her there, just to be sure she actually would walk into his office. Why was she looking at him like that? "What?"

After midnight. Ok. Gosh, Lottie just knew every answer to every question mini!blondie had over here. "Do you wanna see it one night?" Libra that is. Just a fair question, it was her zodiac. Ok, but no, don't mention the heliocentric model. That'd only bring laughter, embarrassment, disappointment to a teacher and Tag sinking into a tapestry. Never mention that ever again. Anyway, Lottie was now answering Tag's 'season' question. He nodded at her words, definitely not interrupting her at all, because that'd only cause more confusion in him. After she was done Tag took a few moments to repeat what she'd had told him, and then think it through. Yes, admire your boyfriend while he figures this out, Lotus. "I suppose that makes sense." Tag said after a while, perhaps, after thinking it through 3-4 times. And, Lottie had given it to him in its most basic form.

Perhaps Tag had forgotten about it, ok? He only remembers stars. And, he even accidentally pointed to a planet that one time. Cut him some slack, thank you very much. "Planets don't twinkle, ok." He got that down so he gave her a thumbs up. Once again the boy checked the ceiling for anything that wasn't twinkling and fixed. "There?" Tag said unsurely as he pointed his finger at Draco and went somewhat, somewhat, left of it. A very bad 'left'.
