Entering the common room through the same corridor as the kitchens the kitchens, you will find a pile of large barrels stacked in the shadowy stone recess to your right. The second barrel from the bottom, middle of the second row, will open when tapped to the enunciation of 'Helga Hufflepuff'. (*Note: non-Hufflepuffs who tap the wrong barrel, or the incorrect number of times, will result in one of the lids bursting off and dousing the trespasser in vinegar)
Following a sloping, earthy passage inside the barrel, which will then travel upwards slightly, a cozy, round, low-ceilinged room comes into view. Welcome! Your common room is like your sanctuary. During your seven years here, your house will be like your family. The room is decorated in the cheerful house colors of yellow and black, enhanced by the use of highly polished honey-colored wood for the tables and then round doors which lead to the boys' and girls' dormitories.
Directly over the wooden mantelpiece, which is covered with carvings of decorative dancing badgers, is a portrait of Helga Hufflepuff, your house founder and one of the four Hogwarts founders, toasting her students with a tiny, two-handled golden cup. There are small, round windows level with the ground at the foot of the castle, showing a pleasant view of grass and flowers, occasionally people. As a result of the low windows, the room has a year-round sunny feel to it.

With the feast out of the way, Elodie was in the biggest and most productive of moods. Food apparently did that to her even though she'd barely touched anything. The blame lay with the lollipops she'd had, of course. She would have gone elsewhere and walked around the castle for a little while with M-Ball, but she'd been all importantly badged and had to take care of the rugrats. Or the new kids. Or the little turds, as she was affectionately calling them right now.
"OKAY. SO. This is your common room. First years...you'll be here for seven years. Congrats, well done, enjoy, don't redecorate and please find out where your nearest bathroom is. I'm Elodie Robertser, and I'll be one of your prefects this year. I won't stand for any rubbish and I will clip you around the ear if you're an idiot." She had a thing for bathrooms today or something. She gave their study tables a point and then the rugrats a big look. "If you aren't a first year, you'll be here for less. Obviously. If you didn't realise that, then you don't belong here and I'm sure we can find you a tree to sleep in outside. Hooligans." Oh. Yeah. The study tables.
"These will be your best friend by the end of the year! I'll leave you all a selection of colouring books on there later. Please don't use them for silly reasons. Do your homework there! Avoid other houses copying you from the library. STUDY FOR YOUR EXAMS. Your exams will be HARD. You will want to cry. I will personally make myself available to you rugrats if you want homework or exam prep help. I'm pretty awesome with study notes." Was she helping too much? Was she overpowering them? Was she just talking too much? Should she have sent them to bed yet?
"Our Head of House isn't here right now, as she just welcomed a baaaaaaaby." Pause for applause? Love? AHA. IDEA. "I'll leave little cards on the study tables for the rest of the week for you to fill in for Professor Hadley if you would like to. Now. OFF TO BED WITH YOU ALL! Stay out of the dorms that are not your own. Don't punch your dormmates. Please avoid finding a snogging mate in the common room and get out of my sight." They had work to do!

She'd been so freaking awesome right then. Right?
Leah stood on tip-toes and stared over the head of a particularly tall first year to see what was causing the crowd in the doorway of the common room. She heard Elodie, the new prefect giving a looong speech. She pressed herself to the wall and squeezed inside the comfortable common room. She collapsed into an armchair and listened to Elodie.
Man she was indeed speaking a lot. But that was not a bad thing, it just explained that the prefect cared about the firsties. When Elodie was finally finished, Leah walked over to her. "Nice speech, Prefect Elodie." she smiled at her. "Would you care to chat with me for a while? You seem like you need a break from your duties." she gestured to the chairs near the fireplace.
When the second year was settled, she stared at the hot fire and whispered, "I miss Professor Hadley already." she could not help it. The bit about her Head of house had made Leah think of her and tears welled up in her big eyes.

Prefect Elodie. Oh. That wasn't going to get old at all. Els pulled the younger Hufflepuff into a big hug and patted her hair, offering her one of the lollipops left in her pocket from earlier. HOUSE CUPS TO WIN! THINGS TO DO.
She'd been so freaking awesome right then. Right?
Hallie stood with her shoulders square. She had wanted to look around at this "Common Room" but their Prefect was speaking and it would be rude to allow her eyes to wander. She listened and absorbed what was being told to her, taking mental notes. She observed that the Prefect was very, very pretty and probably very smart and charming if she landed herself in this seat of power and responsibility. Hallie took note that this girl was someone to admire, but also someone to ask about being successful here at Hogwarts. Not just yet though. One problem at a time.
Her posture was stiff and her breathing very controlled. She was still trying to hold in her overwhelming need to collapse to her knees and weep--mustn't do that in front of people. She was doing a remarkable job of maintaining her cool yet uptight stature as she listened intently to the older girl's speech. The only sign that she was uncomfortable was her knuckles closed tightly over a stretch of the fabric on her skirt, clutching and wringing it with worry.
Once the pretty Prefect was done speaking, Hallie moved only her head to glance around the room, letting it swivel on her shoulders like a bird. Yes...this room did appear to be very....common. At least it was warm and welcoming enough. She wondered if Coral's common room was nicer. It probably was. She was slowly accepting that her twin was the one who was going to get all the good things in life.
Halcyon waited her turn to speak privately with the Prefect. Elodie, she had said her name was? "Um. Pardon me." Her grip on her skirt fabric tightened. "My name is Halcyon, well, Hallie, really, and I, I think I have a few questions about the sorting process. If that's alright?"
Speaking and making sure she came off as "mature" and "respectable" was difficult when this upset, but she had to try her best. After all, only one chance for a first impression on any of her new school mates.
"My sister was sorted into the wrong house," she said very quickly, a small break in her composure. It didn't occur to her that she could be the one who was sorted incorrectly. She wondered once she said it if maybe this was one of those schools that could punish you for saying anything bad about it. She hadn't read anything like that about Hogwarts, of course, but as their arrival here approached she has found herself getting more and more irrationally frightened about the institution. It was home-schooling's fault that she didn't know how things were run around here. All the same, she thought it best to amend her statement to be less rude against the school.
"Well maybe not sorted wrong, admittedly I don't know very much about how it is done. But we were separated and I'm very confused." Her voice broke a little. She was trying very hard not to appear upset. "I've changed my mind, I think my only question is when I'll be able to see her again? We're twins...She doesn't do very well without me..."

Another small human! Placing her hands into her robe pockets, Elodie let the rugrat speak and fiddled with the remaining lollipops in her pockets whilst doing so. "I like Halcyon. S'cute." She liked Hallie too. So she'd probably keep it fresh with what she called the kid. If she stayed on her good side, that was. If she didn't, she'd probably be referred to as 'oi', 'brat' or 'turd'. Just to keep things fun. But Els was super fond of the whole 'rugrats' thing she had going right now. But Halcyon. Hallie. Yeah. Cool. Was there a problem? An issue? Had she lost something already?
A sibling.
Oh.
Well that wasn't exactly the best of situations. But the sorting process? Elodie could try answer questions. She didn't really question anything about it because it did what it needed to and she got a roof over her head, good food and a bed to sleep in. The only problem was not being in the same house as Cat, but Els was positive she was better off in her own dorm with Olly and Bliss for now.
"Well... I don't think she was sorted wrong," she started, offering the rugrat a lollipop as she opened one up for herself. "Being sorted into different houses doesn't mean she's gone or anything. My best friend is in Slytherin and my boyfriend was a Gryffindor. I see...saw... I.. What I'm trying to say, is that you'll see her. There's a potions class in the morning. She'll be there. You can see her then. You'll see her in classes. And you can make plans to do your homeworks together on the grounds, in the Great Hall or the library." Why there was an issue, she didn't know. But she wasn't exactly in a position to snap at Hallie and tell her to get her big girl boots on and that being alone was part of life.
Because people left you. They left you behind, or they died. That was life. That was the big world.
But nope. No scaring the rugrats. Not yet.
"What house is she in? I can maybe talk to someone in the house and ask them to keep an eye on her." Or she wouldn't. But she could say she'd try.

Hallie nodded along as she was spoken too. She did feel a little relieved and let out a small sigh. If people from different houses could be best friends then maybe she and Coral would be okay. In a way, she knew that she and her sister would be able to see each other around the school, but worrying about not seeing her was easier than her new worries. What if Coral-Bay makes all new friends and Hallie doesn't? What if Coral is better in classes and is more popular and gets a boyfriend and Hallie doesn't? Hallie was supposed to be the strong one. The brave one. The decisive one. Could she bear it if CB did better than her here? Hallie wanted to win.
It's not like the picking for friends seemed overwhelmingly good. Nobody seemed dreadfully unbearable yet, but Hallie had always seen herself being surrounded by extremely driven and intellectual people. Her fellow Hufflepuffs were nice, sure, and maybe once she got to know them they wouldn't seem as off-putting. For now, she had to resist turning her nose up. She and her sister were supposed to both by Ravenclaws or Slytherins, somewhere with smart or ambitious people. But instead she was put here. Without Coral-Bay. She could work with being here if it weren't for being separated..At least she looked really good in yellow.
"Thank you, really." She nodded three times. "I'm sorry to seem so..." She trailed off. "I'm normally better than this." She was struggling to articulate herself, which has never happened before. "I'd really appreciate it, thank you so, so much. Her name is Coral-Bay, and she was sorted into Ravenclaw."

There was no use in thanking her. It wasn't like she'd used every ounce of her smarts to come up with her answer. She just figured it was what she would have wanted to hear if she was in the same position.
"Okay. Coral-Bay. Ravenclaw. I'll pull a few strings." Aka maybe ask Cat to ask Mo if he'd seen a mopey youngster. Cat probably had more friends in Ravenclaw than she did. That was easier. Word of mouth. And then it wouldn't look like Elodie was purposely spying on a younger student or anything. She was just doing a favour. Possibly doing a favour. She'd have to pretend she'd asked and maybe lie if she hadn't and Hallie asked her for updates.
"It's fine. You don't need to apologise. First night in a new school and you're apart from the one person you know. I understand. But..." She crouched just a little bit, (being 5'10 and dealing with the rugrats was harder than she thought) and smiled. "We're a pretty awesome house, you know? A few of them need kicks up the behinds and swats around the head and just a bucket of ice being poured over their head, but...it's very family like here. It'll be like home for you soon..." And that was definitely something Elodie had needed to hear when she had been sorted here. Being the first Hufflepuff in generations of Slytherin and Ravenclaw sortees was the worst thing for her eleven year old self.

Declan wandered back into the common room, having gone to the kitchen for a quick cup of coffee. Unusually, he was up and ready for school...He shuddered at the thought of actually "liking" school, but this one was actually pretty cool. He had already taken Shane's word for it, being that he brother attended Hogwarts for five years before they moved to California.
He hopped up onto a chair to stare out the rounded windows. Sip. Sip. Mmm. Those house elves made some excellent coffee.
There was no use in thanking her. It wasn't like she'd used every ounce of her smarts to come up with her answer. She just figured it was what she would have wanted to hear if she was in the same position.

"Thank you," she said again. She meant it. She didn't know if it was a lot to ask, but it was still very nice of Elodie to do.
Hallie smiled a little. Very family like. That was comforting, in a way. "It sounds lovely..." And it did. She still wasn't sure about it, but all the same, she was stuck and she'd need to adapt. "I'm not sure why I was put here but it was for a reason, so I think in the end I will do well here. I do well with most things." She nodded three times and curled her hair behind her ear. Leaning back against the arm of the chair she'd been previously inhabiting near Leah, Elodie nodded her head. "I had no idea why I was sorted here when I was. My entire family were sorted into Slytherin or Ravenclaw. For generations back. In fact... I only know of one Hufflepuff in my life and that's my godmother." Who had been prefect here. Just like Elodie was. But Mama Tam had been much like a mother, or a female family member to Els as she grew up anyway.
Still. Elodie liked being the only one. And the only one to be awesome enough to get a nice badge to say thanks for being perfect. Perfect. Prefect. Oosh.
"I think you're going to do fine in Hufflepuff, Hallie. See. They both begin with the same letter, and we're incredibly close to the kitchens. I can show you how to get into those tomorrow if you'd like." And if she wanted to see anything else, especially the walk to the Ravenclaw tower, then Els would show her that too.
SWEET LITTLE HUMAN WAS MAKING CONVERSATION WITH HER!
Prefect Elodie. Oh. That wasn't going to get old at all. Els pulled the younger Hufflepuff into a big hug and patted her hair, offering her one of the lollipops left in her pocket from earlier. "I'd love to chat with you, kiddo. I've gotta keep an eye on the rugrats too. But chatting would be lovely." At least this way she wouldn't have to worry about making small talk with a confused first year who just wanted to explore when they needed to be in bed.
Speaking of curfew... she wasn't going to be sleeping in the common room to keep an eye on the kids. Hells no. She liked her bed too much. So staying in your beds was a GOOD IDEA, NUGGETS. Instead of sitting herself on a seat, Elodie perched herself on the arm of the chair Leah was sitting on, and played a little with the second years hair. "I know.... She'll be back soon though. I think her son needs her more than we do right now, you know? Make her a card in the morning and I'll make sure it goes into the box to give to her when she's back." That was good advice, right?
Whuofmps. Leah was hugged by the big girl whom she first met at the feast. Oh well, at least she smelled good. And she loved people patting her hair! It made her being short a good thing. Whee, another lollipop! "Hey thanks, is your pocket full of candies? Or can you conjure them out of nowhere?" A very... academic question involving charms and transfiguration. "Rugrats?" The second year turned her gaze to the firsties. Oh okay, rugrats... though most of them were taller than her already. "I'm sure they'll do fine, all Badgers do fine." she said. At least all Hufflepuffs she knew were okay.
As Elodie played with Leah's hair, her thoughts drifted off to last year exactly at this time when her hair was still short, curly, and brown. Now she used all kinds of potions so that it was quite long, wavy and red-orange. Not that it really mattered, though. Back to talking about Professor Hadley. "I saw the note on the noticeboard. She'll be back on November, I don't think I can wait until then." She puffed out her cheeks and wiped her eyes. "Yeah, I'll do that. Write a card. She'll know how much we love her then." Good idea, prefect! You're doing an awesome job. "... I wonder what they named the boy." It was a random thing to say, but it was natural to be curious. heehee

Kace decided it was time to visit the common room. He stretched out since he had a good night's sleep. He saw someone at the chairs with a cup of coffee. He could smell it. The smell wafted him over to the new guy.
Kace smiled and greeted him, "Hey i am Kace. Are you new here, i haven't seen you around this common room yet." he asked the new kid. "Btw are the house elves still making the coffee?" he asked another question.

Dec looked down at his cup. It was almost all gone. How long had he been looking out this window?? He shrugged to himself and turned to get off when suddenly he found himself looking down at a person. "Oh. Hello...Kace." Kace...Kace...Kace...Where had he heard that name before? OH. The recently turned seventeen year-old stepped off the chair, careful not to spill his little bit of coffee everywhere. "You're one of Marigold's friends, right?" He was sure his name in the string of names his cousin was blabbering about. "I'm Declan and I am. Transferred from Winchester in California." He said holding his hand out to shake the kid's. Coffee? "Yeah, I'm sure they still are. Matter of fact, I think I wanna go get a refill." THIS WAS REALLY GOOD COFFEE.

"Hello Delcan!" he said when he gave out his name. But he smiled when he asked if he was Marigold's friends. Ah Goldilocks was giving his name out to people. "Yeah i am, we are best friends." he shrugged. Oh? He was a transfer that is why he never saw him around. "Wowww california, how is it there? I wish i could visit there." He really wished he could walk down the boulevard where the stars name were on there or the Chinese Grauman Theatre. But anyways....
"Oh? Do you wanna go back down and get some? I figure i may stay up for a while, while you tell me about California. I am from Kansas by the way." he said on a side note.

Elodie laughed lightly and tapped her nose a few times. "That's my secret." It was just always full of them because if she was too busy to grab dinner, she'd tide herself over with a lollipop or something. But Leah could believe she was really brilliant and could conjure them from nowhere. That sounded pretty fun as it was. With her fingers in the other girls hair, Elodie started to weave it into a plait, and nodded again. "They'll be fine. I'm sure they'll have a few hiccups, but that's expected." She'd get them into line if she needed to. It wasn't only her responsibility though, so she'd let other people keep an eye on them. Didn't wanna make the rugrats sick of her before the first month of school was up.
She didn't think she could wait until then? Elodie frowned, and fastened the plait into place with a spare hair tie before hugging the girl again. "I know you can wait. Think of how much she's enjoying her time with her new son, and you'll be okay. You can come to me if you need anything, okay? I'll even sit on the end of your bed and read you a story if I have to." But Leah wasn't a baby, right? She wouldn't need that. Or did they need that? Elodie did sometimes. But sometimes that was more so she could hear Coulson's voice as she fell to sleep because it was her absolute favourite thing. Love was silly. It did silly things to you.
"I bet they named him a variation of my name. I'm obviously her favourite."

Best friends, eh? "Good. Then I can trust you to keep on eye on that Mitch kid when I'm not around, yes?" He was kidding! Sort of. Not really.
He had a love-hate relationship with California, but everything happens for a reason. Many of those reasons will follow him everywhere. "California is nice. My family lived up by San Francisco. It was foggy most of the days, but school was in San Jose and that's where I got the most sun, ha."
More coffee?? YES. "Sure. I'm down." Oh, a real born American, huh? "See, I don't like emphasizing that I'm from California 'cos I was born here. Right in Scotland. Up until I was 10 and then we moved and I lived in Cali for about seven years and that's it, really."

"Yes of course you can trust me.." he smirked. "I promise, cross my heart, hope to die, yada yada yada.." he said and he knew Delcan was catching the drift. Oh? So California was not sunny. Funny it was called the Sunshine state. "Huh...i thought it would be sunny all the time since it is called the Sunshine State." he shrugged. Who knew?
He was glad he was down for coffee, he was loving the smell. "Alright let's go for a bit." he said getting up from his chair. "Or you know i could Accio it, but i don't wanna get in trouble with the house elves.." he chuckled. "Oh that is cool mate!" he said commenting on when he was being born in Scotland. I mean i have been in Kansas all my life. I do not really have the southern accent because my Grandma kept it that way." he grinned.

Dec chuckled. Great, had someone on Team Protect Mari. "Yeah, you'd figure, right?" He laughed a bit more. "It's definitely more sunnier than other places, though."
He walked over to the door with him, "Yeah, I don't think they'd like that, ha." Oh, yeah. He kind of noticed the lack of an accent there. "I'm glad I didn't lose my Scottish accent. My sister kind of is. She was only five when we left and she was born in England, so I figure it's kind of easier to get lost, no?" Off to get more coffee with his new pair of eyes.

"Oh that is true." he nodded agreeing with him. "I think it may be more sunnier in Mexico than other places.." he said chuckling. When he mentioned his scottish accent, he could hear it. "Oh now you mention it, i can hear it now." he said picking up on it. "But that is cool mate, can you teach me some Scottish sayings?" he asked being the curious puff he was.
"I am glad you know your ways to the kitchen being the new student and all.." he commented to Delcan. "Have you sneaked down to get some snacks yet?" he asked.

Dec pouted, nodding, "That's quite true. Touche." It was going to be awhile before he regained his complete accent back. "Oh, I know. You can barely hear it now, but I'll get it back." He started laughing to himself, "You should hear my sister! When she's around my parents, she has this full accent and when she's somewhere else, it's suddenly American. It's hilarious! She doesn't even notice." Phrases? He chuckled again. This kid was a hoot. "Yeah, sure. Over our cups of coffee, yeah?"
It wasn't that hard finding the kitchen when the entrance to the common room was right there, kid. "Where there's food, I'll be there."
Elodie laughed lightly and tapped her nose a few times. "That's my secret." It was just always full of them because if she was too busy to grab dinner, she'd tide herself over with a lollipop or something. Think of how much she's enjoying her time with her new son, and you'll be okay. You can come to me if you need anything, okay? I'll even sit on the end of your bed and read you a story if I have to." "I bet they named him a variation of my name. I'm obviously her favourite."
KIDDING.
Leah wanted to know the truth behind the infinite lollipop, but knew better than to tag around for someone's secret. Hopefully she would be able to learn how to make lollipops appear out of nowhere in a few years. At the mention of first years, the girl asked, "Eh, so who's the other prefect? Are you doing all the work?" the second year asked, looking around. No one else was patrolling the common room... nor calling firsties rugrats. She wondered who the new male prefect was. But Leah did not want Elodie getting too worried about the first years, it was a pretty quiet group of first years last year, from what she remembered.
It took quite a while for her to realize that her hair was now in a perfect plait. "Oh, thanks for this." she patted the braid. Then Leah was being hugged again! When she released the prefect, she was feeling much better. "Yeah, I'm hoping she's enjoying loads." Wait, bedtime stories? "Um, that would be okay. I'm the type who can't sleep when I hear a story." When Leah's mother stopped reading her stories, Leah stopped reading almost anything at all.
"You are her favorite? Cool." the girl said. "I would have guessed that, you being the prefect, but I didn't think that Professor Hadley would actually name her baby after her favorite student." she replied seriously.

"I mean sometimes when i am back home, i get my Kansas accent back." he shrugged. "I guess i hear my mom and dad talk it, it just happens naturally. MY sister Belle doesn't have it. She was soo against it." he chuckled. It was funny how hard she tried. "But that is great mate, your sister can like portray like a foreign exchange student and get all the guys." he nudged and joked with him a little bit.
"Oh of course, we can go over some phrases over coffee. I am so interested." he said jumping on the balls of his feet. "Oh me too!" he said when he mentioned when there's food I'll be there. "I mean i think it is in our DNA to eat, we just do it without thinking." he shrugged. Was he right or not?
After they got their coffee and sat back down on the couches, he blew his a little bit to cool down. "So what kind of coffee is your favorite? Do you go to the shops like Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts?" he asked.

"You know," He said, stepping out the door. "I think that's it. Depends on who you're around, I guess."
"Does your sister go here?" Who knows maybe she did and maybe she was super hot. He chuckled, "I wouldn't let any boys near my sister. She hates it. Calls me a hypocrite all the time. Which I am, I suppose." Shane always told him to look out for his younger sister and Marigold was like a sister too, so, yeah.
After heading out to the kitchen, they took a seat on the couch, where Declan let himself slump onto. "Nah, I like my coffee made at home with lots of sugar and cream. You?"
*It had been a very long day of classes and all Romulus wanted to do was sleep. Seeing an empty couch Rom went down head first into the pillows.*
"Ahhh.... sleepy time."
