Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in the Hogwarts Observatory you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. This circular but spacious room has been locked and opened as many times as there have been Astronomy professors staffed at the school. The huge telescope that former Hogwarts Astronomy professor, Professor Anteres, had put in years ago is still here and fully operable. Students are very welcome to try and use it. If you need a hand Professor Flamsteed is always somewhere close by and can lend you assistance. If the giant telescope is too much there is always smaller telescopes stored away in the cupboards around the room which you can borrow and use as you please as well as other astronomy objects.
Large star charts are pinned to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Don't try and take the charts down though, as they are charmed to warn if somebody tries to remove them.
Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory remains unlocked. Students adhere by a curfew and after that hour no students should be found out of bed. If you desire to study the heavens after curfew, you need a signed note from Professor Flamsteed showing that you are allowed to stay up after hours. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences like loss of house points or detention.
The observatory is place for scientific inquiry much like the library is a place to immerse yourself in books, since it’s a shrine to our massively beautiful universe. Please respect any teacher or student spending time in the observatory by not running around or shouting in high pitched voices. Just because Professor Flamsteed isn't currently in the observatory doesn't mean he isn't watching what is going on.
OOC: you do not HAVE to RP your character asking permission from Professor Flamsteed in his office before posting here after hours and may pretend that you received permission. Also, please keep in mind that while looking at the stars can be a romantic endeavor, that is not the purpose of the observatory and any mischief may result in points being deducted or detention.
When he heard that there was Astrology offered at Hogwarts, nothing excited Altair more. He was fascinated with the stars in the night sky from the story his papa told him on the day that he was born. His mom said that he was their little star child and called him "Altair." Now, he was curious if there was perhaps more significance to his name than he knew. After all, he just discovered he was a wizard and wasn't aware that there was actual magic out in the world. Which made him think of the mother he never knew. Could she have been a witch? His father certainly couldn't recall her showing any signs of magic, but that didn't mean there wasn't the possibility.
Altair's first instinct was to go to the professor of Astrology, but he figured the man would be too busy for something irrelevant to actual lessons. He certainly didn't want to be bothersome with his own personal endeavor of discovering more of his own history. He knew he wouldn't have a lot of time before curfew to make it to the observatory, he'd heard so much about, but he wanted to use what little time he had. The sky was still rosy from the sunset, but the stars were still peaking through in the darkness.
Now, that he thought about it, Altair wasn't entirely sure if he was supposed to be up here. However, he was immediately captivated by the giant telescope before him. It was nothing like Chesire's Lovell Telescope, which was practically an antique now. It was a lot more intricate and seemed to have some magical qualities. He began to circle around it, "Hmm...gravitational lensing...off axis mirrors...adaptive optics," he observed the different parts. It was certainly advanced and combined a lot things that some of the greatest telescopes around the world, but then there were some gadgets he had no idea what they were.
Well, staring at something so magnificent certainly wasn't going to get him anywhere, but he wasn't entirely sure how to use something so grand. And the night was filling the sky more and more and that meant it was getting closer to curfew. "Maybe I should start with the smaller ones first," he said to himself as he walked over to a nearby telescope on a much smaller scale.

Deciding that he should give the telescopes another look over before his lesson, Airey made his way to the Observatory with a small box of cleaning materials held under his right arm. With how rough and uncivilized the Gringotts goblins had been when that had come and repo'd things...it really was a wonder that anything had been returned in one piece.
Whistling a classic tune as he entered, he did not notice the young Hufflepuff examining one of the returned telescopes on the other side of the area. Man on a mission here. He instead approached the nearest telescope and removed his wand, giving it a swish and a tap on himself to perform Oculo Focalis so that he could better examine the lens of the telescope for any scratches and damage that anyone with average eyesight would have missed.
Blue eyes bugging out of his head, he pulled out a piece of parchment and quill from his charmed breast pocket and began to jot down a few things. "Bloody halo," he cursed under his breath. "Gringotts will hear about this."

Altair jumped and let out a yelp when he heard someone curse behind him. Usually something like that would've made him laugh, but not when he though he was alone. When he finally caught his breath he looked over to see the person that was so upset. It was actually a larger person, it was a professor. Altair could only assume that it was Professor Flamsteed, given the way he was inspecting the telescopes and writing notes. He just hoped he wasn't in trouble. He might as well make his presence known, but he was pretty sure his little scream could have notified anyone within a mile radius.
"Good evening Professor," he choked up to say. "Listen, I'm really sorry for coming up here without permission, I just wanted to look at the Aquila constellation and see if it truly matched the birthmarks on my back because that's what I was kind of named after and everything and I just wanted to know why. And I swear I didn't touch the big telescope even though the gravitational lensing is some of the most impressive craftsmanship I've ever seen on a telescope, though I've heard that hexagonal mirrors provide sharper images than spherical and... and..."
Altair took a deep breath, he could feel his ears begin to twitch as the nerves took over. "I'm sorry." His shoulders slumped with embarrassment. He was wondering what kind of trouble he'd be in. He didn't know how late it was, but by looking at the night sky he figured it was late. Altair heard they would deduct points for misconduct. "If I'm to be punished, please send me to detention or turn me into a toad or something, but please don't take it out on my House for what I did. Or you could write my papa, he'd be upset, but I would rather be the one that gets in trouble for being up here. I just lost track of time...I think. What time is it?" He could be bumbling for no reason, he was just so frantic, he didn't know what else. to do.

Grumbling some more as he continued his inspection of the telescope, Airey's eyes began to burn just a little due to the strain the spell had on the eyes. Jotting down a few more notes on his parchment with his quill, he began to draw a diagram of the lens and just where the scratches had occurred to do a comparison with the other telescopes should they also have scratches on them. Essentially shutting out the rest of the world with his focus and attention to detail, his arm twitched quite suddenly when he heard a yelp come from behind him and his quill went RIGHT through the parchment up to the point where his fingers were holding it.
"Sweet solstice," he exclaimed as he turned around to look at the source of the yelp. He could always repair the parchment magically in just a moment, so no real harm done there. At least he hadn't knocked a telescope over while doing some of his arm flailing. His wide eye expression softened just a bit when he saw the Hufflepuff standing there. Oh blazing comets he could see the pores on the young man's face and...oh yes. He ought to remove the spell on his eyes now. "Evening," he greeted while giving himself a tap with his wand. His eyes watered just a bit as the spell was removed, but he quickly wiped all that away with his index finger before returning his wand to his breast pocket. "And what is your ---"
Stare. The professor had not expected all of those words to come out like that in such rapid succession. Unfortunately, or fortunately in the case of the boy, Airey heard nothing else once he said that he had a birthmark in the shape of Aquila on his back. "Do you really now?" he asked, his eyes alive with curiosity as he hastily walked over to the first year. "Aquila will be in the sky just North - North West from that window this evening if you are wanting to take a gander at it yourself," he said as he pointed towards the window with his one hand while his eyes remained on the boy. "Fine constellation, Aquila. Pet eagle of Zeus and one of the 48 constellations described by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy that contains one of the closest naked-eye stars to Earth at a distance of 17 light-years," he mused as continued to examine the boy. "Where exactly did you say your birthmark was?"

After, his blubbering rant, he could tell the professor tried to say something in the middle of that, but unfortunately kept going. The professor just looked at him with an inquisitive expression and as the words kept coming from Altair's mouth, he didn't know what to make of it. It was finally after that pause of wonderment and him finally allowing Flamsteed to speak a little weight was lifted off his shoulders when he spoke of Aquila.
Altair's eye's followed the directions the professor was pointing at. And there it very much was, Aquila, and shining brightly at the top or the neck of the eagle was the star Altair. It was his star, the one he was named after and the twelfth brightest star in the night sky. A smile emerged out of the corner of his mouth as he stared at the constellation and continued to listen the professor's knowledgeable information. First about it being Zeus's eagle, "The same eagle that tormented Prometheus," he said softly. "16.7 light-years," Altair corrected, which immediately made him snap out of his staring trance of the night sky and look at the professor wide-eyed and scared. "I mean, according to Fred Schaaf, that is." His ears started to wiggle slightly as his nerves were taking over again.
Altair quickly changed that subject to answer, "It's on my back." He could feel a lump in his throat and he tried to swallow it, but it just kind of stuck there. He forced a nervous smile, "My mum named me after it. It could just be a coincidence, but I've always wondered if it could mean something more."

Airey cocked his head to the side and poked out his cheek with his tongue out of sheer amusement. "Oh ho ho hooooo," he chuckled. He had been rounding up, of course, but the boy's knowledge and conviction impressed the astronomer. "16.73," he added with a quick wink. As long as they were being overly specific that is. "Take 3 points for your house, young man," he said as he walked over to give the boy a pat on the shoulder. "Tell me, how is it that a first year like yourself knows who Fred Schaaf is?"
Watch out, Miss Wisteria. This young Hufflepuff is nipping at your heels it seems.
And his curiosity regarding this boy just continued to grow. "How very inquisitive of your mother," he mused. He was certain that if he ever had children he would name them after such things as well. Constellations. Moons. So many fantastic choices there and he would have lingered on the thought some more if it weren't for the fact that having children of his own was slightly terrifying to him at present. "Something more?" he asked, curiosity even more tickled. Unless the boy was perhaps referring to something more in Calista's interests. Then he would be more than willing to redirect the boy towards the Divination professor.
He wiggled his toes inside his shoes and rocked forward on the ball of his feel anxiously. "Can I see it? I mean...do you mind showing me this fascinating birthmark of yours?"

Sander entered the observatory and looked around. This was the first time he had been inside here and was awed at what he saw . He was glad that Professor Flamsteed's homework assignment required that they make use of the telescopes to look for certain celestial bodies.
He quickly walked over to study the celestial maps noting down the positions of the ones he was supposed to look for and then walked over to one of the telescopes. He wondered whether he would see his friends here tonight too,
Sander began setting up the telescope and then took out his wand pointed it at the lens of the telescope and said?"Lens Focalis."
Now to start looking.

Bay finally reached the top, man there were a lot of stairs. Phew. no more, thank goodness. He looked around the Observatory and spotted Sander, awesome glad he wasn't the first one here. Bay made his way over to him and bumped his shoulder. "Hey Bro" he said while looking at what Sander was doing. "Started with out me eh?" he said laughing while moving towards his own telescope.
"How long have you been here?" he asked while adjusting his own telescope and pointing it up towards the sky. So far so good. "Lens Focalis" he said while putting his eye to the looking glass.

Professor Flamsteed had told Lux to do her homework and try hard in order to help him, and that was what she was going to do because she wanted him to feel better. First attempting to do the theory option since it might make her understand the subject better, she had given that up soon after since it was way too difficult for her to even comprehend what she was reading. It was definitely time to get a tutor for Astronomy class.
With her bag over her shoulder, Lux made her way over to the Observatory, surprised when she got there to see Sander and Bay. Wow, it was totally crazy how they bumped into each other! Crazy and awesome.
Beaming, she walked over to them, placing her bag next to the telescope beside Bay's. "How long have you guys been here?" Hopefully not very long, because even though she wanted to do this on her own, she might need assistance. 'How do I set a telescope up? I've never done this before."

Tessa made her way up to the Observatory, holding a thermos of hot chocolate and several cups. She was sure they wouldn't be up here too late- but sustenance was always welcome in her eyes.
As she walked in, she found that she was the last one to arrive. "Hello everyone," she said, grinning at Lux, Bay, and Sander. "Hot chocolate anyone?If it's not allowed, I'll put it outside for later," she said with a grin.
Settign that down, she began to set up her telescope when she heard Lux's question. "Just watch how I do it," she told the younger girl. "If you need more help, just let me know," she offered. Once that was done, she set up in her own corner of the Observatory. "Lens Focalis," she cast, and began to search the night sky for... anything.

Sander looked up from his telescope when he heard movement in the Observatory. He immediately grinned when he saw Bay, closely followed by Lux and then Tessa enter the obervatory.
"Hey there guys. I just only got here. I'm still trying to set up my telescope. The focussing is still not right. Either that or I didn't do the spell right." he informed everyone. Just to be on the safe side he pointed his wand at his telescope and ended the spell and cast the spell again.
Concentrating harder on the spell, with a swish and then a tap on the telescope with his wand, Sander cast the lens focussing charm again,"Lens Focalis".
He peered through the viewfinder of his telescope.
"Most excellent. I think I'm ready to look for my first celestial body." Sander gave everyone a thumbs up sign.

Seeing Tessa arrive, Lux waved to her friend as she joined them. It was great that they were all here now, and it was a relief that Tessa was offering to help her, because she really needed it. Normally she would have asked Professor Flamsteed for assistance since he was the Astronomy Professor, but for obvious reasons that was not possible right now. "How do I set up my telescope?" After pulling out her Astronomy textbook, he waited patiently by the telescope she had chosen so that she could be shown how to get it up and running. Then she would be able to look out into the night sky and see the different things they were asked to!
Hopefully her textbook would be of assistance, because otherwise she would have no idea what she was looking at up there.

Tessa was still focusing her telescope when she heard Lux's comment. Smiling to herself, she turned to the young Puff.
"Pick a spot first- where you want to stand in order to look. Once you've done that, set up the stand so that you can have your hands free to make adjustments with these dials," she pointed to the dials. "And the spells will help you to focus and see farther than what the regular lenses will allow. And those are simple enough to do," she explained with a warm smile.

Lux moved herself into what she thought was a good position. "Is this okay, Tessa?" Listening further instructions, she went about setting up the stand. "So... I use the dials to focus and then the spells help me more? Or do I use the spells when I am focusing?" Gah, she felt dumb, but she was still confused.

Bay was looking through his telescope when he heard Tessa and Lux come up to the Observatory. "Oh here comes trouble" he said quietly while seeing Lux set up beside him.. Lux needed some help and of course Super Tessa was there to the rescue.
"If you guys need any help from me just let me know" he told the ladies… just in case they needed some muscle or anything….
He put his eye back to the glass and started to look at all the pretty things in the sky. "Ohhh this is so awesome up there man.." Bay laughed… "Ohhh someone come look!" he said excitedly. "That huge red star looking thing..thats Mars right???" he didn't know if he was sure or not but thats why he asked someone to come look at it.

When Bay said that he had found something, she excitedly went over to look at it. "I want to see, Bay." She hoped it was really Mars, because she had never seen it before, and had never looked through a telescope since they did not have any at her house. "Do I have to say the spell as I focus my telescope?" she asked him. Bay was smart like Tessa and Sander, so surely he would be able to answer her question.

Sander looked away from his viewfinder to answer Lux's question. "Yes Lux, you first use the dials to focus your lenses. Now if you think you see something or you think that things are still blurry, you use the Lens Focalis spell to sharpen the image. Now if you want to see something without using your telescope, just use the Oculo Focalis spell to help you see better with the naked eye." Sander informed the younger girl.

When Sander heard Bay call out that he had found Mars, he quickly walked over to look into Bay's telescope viewfinder. Yep there it was Mars."Yep that red planet looking thing is Mars. Remember it's a planet, Bay. Don't let the Professor catch you calling it a star," Sander grinned at Bay.
"Okay I'm off to find the Andromeda Galaxy," Sander told everyone. He walked over to the star charts and found the coordinates of where the Galaxy could be found during this time of year. Sander quickly jotted down the coordinates in his journal.
Then he walked back to his telescope, adjusted the knobs until he had the proper coordinates and then he peered into the viewfinder, moving it back and forth in his search of the Galaxy.
Then he saw what looked like the tail of it. He quickly turned to his textbook and studied the formation of the Andromeda Galaxy before looking back into the viewfinder and smiled. I found it guys. The Andromeda Galaxy. It's totally amazing. It's spirals are exquisite. Wanna have a look at it? I'm going to look for the Milky Way next. It's Andromeda's next door neighbor," Sander offered his telescope to let the others view the Andromeda Galaxy.

Then he walked back to his telescope, adjusted the knobs until he had the proper coordinates and then he peered into the viewfinder, moving it back and forth in his search of the Galaxy.
Then he saw what looked like the tail of it. He quickly turned to his textbook and studied the formation of the Andromeda Galaxy before looking back into the viewfinder and smiled. I found it guys. The Andromeda Galaxy. It's totally amazing. It's spirals are exquisite. Wanna have a look at it? I'm going to look for the Milky Way next. It's Andromeda's next door neighbor," Sander offered his telescope to let the others view the Andromeda Galaxy.
Bay laughed when Lux was so excited "you sure can." he said while instead of moving his telescope he picked up Lux and held it to her.. "See that big red flame… sorry Planet?… thats Mars" he said while letting her look for a few more seconds then placing her down… Sander moved over and looked through it too. and confirmed.. "Oh yeah… sorry Sander… just not too great at all this Astronomy stuff" smiling at him.
Thats awesome man! great find" he said while moving over towards Lux's telescope.. "we will do it together just as Sander said.." he moved the telescope so she didn't need a stand or anything and pointed to the dial's "see these you turn either way to make things not blurry.. and once you see something you can use the spell to make it clearer for you" Bay smiled over towards Sander! they were a great team.
he looked at Lux "go ahead and give it a try" smiling.

Tessa nodded in agreement with everything Sander was saying to the younger puff. "Any questions on that?" she asked, taking a peek in the girl's telescope to make sure everything was working.
"Looks like you're all set," she said with a warm smile as she stepped away from Lux's telescope to let the other girl try. "Just move it around- slowly mind you, so that you can see what you can find out there," she instructed. "You can ask any of us for further help," she added with a wink.
She returned to her own telescope, roaming through the sky to see what she could find. Suddenly, a smile grew on her lips and she held the telescope steady. "Hey everyone, I found Saturn!" she called, her eye not leaving the lens as she studied the gaseous atmosphere. "I wonder if I can count the rings?" she remarked with a laugh. "Anyone want to see?"

Wow, Lux couldn't believe she was looking at Mars through a telescope. That was so cool. Amazed that Bay had managed to do that, she wished that he had held her longer so that she could see more of it. But she had to be nice and let Sander see too.
"Okay, thanks for the help! And I will do, Tessa!" She gave a thumbs up to show that she understood what she was told, and then proceeded to look through the telescope that Bay had adjusted for her. Using the dials in order to focus things, she looked out through space aimlessly for a little while, until she thought she saw a big red thing that was slightly blurry. I bet that is Mars, she thought to herself as she used the Lens Focalis spell to make things clearer.

"Look, I found Mars like Bay did!" Wow, she had found something! "Do I have to write down coordinates for this?" Because if she did, that might be a problem since she had no idea how to do it.
Hearing that Sander had managed to find a galaxy, she wandered over so that maybe he could let her look, while keeping her telescope focused on Mars.

Now that he had found the Andromeda Galaxy, Sander returned to the star charts and flipping through them until he found where the Milky Way would be at this time of the year as well as Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto.
As he searched through the charts, he found that the Constellation Cassiopeia could be seen during this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere. So he decided to keep an eye for it.
He glanced over at the others and smiled when he saw the excitement on their faces when they started sighting the planets. He returned to his telescope and first began looking for the Milky Way. He really didn't have long to search. Knowing that the Milky Way was located near to the Andromeda Galaxy, he slowly moved his telescope to the left of it, stopped at one area to scan it before moving on.
And then he sighted it. The Milky Way. He couldn't believe how clear it was in the starlit sky. "Hey guys if you want to have a look I've found the Milky Way. If you want to look for it yourself let me know and I'll show you how," he called out to his friends.
Now that he had found the Milky Way he decide to look for the the planets. Peering into the viewfinder, Sander moved his telescope up and to the right. As he continued to look, he caught a brief glimpse of a reddish white spot in the sky. He quickly turned his telescope back to where he had seen it and there it was, Jupiter. The planet that had a mixture of several shades of white, red, brown, orange and yellow.
Filled with excitement, Sander called out to the other, "Hey guys I found Jupiter. I didn't think I would but I did. Does anyone one to come and take a look?"
Sander marked off in his journal, the celestial bodies he had sighted so far. The Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way and Jupiter. Now on to the next.
But just then he heard Tessa say that she had found Saturn. So he left his telescope and walked over to join her.

Sander was on his way back to search for more celestial bodies, when Bay announced that he might have just found Pluto. So he went over to have a look. Peering into the telescope, Sander looked and then gave a thumbs up.
"Yep that is Pluto alright. It has that light brown color to it. I still think it was mean to regulate it down to a dwarf planet." Sander looked up and shook his head.
"Well done, Bay. Now I'm off to find the Constellation Cassiopeia. According to the star charts, it should be visible in our hemisphere this time of year." Sander told Bay before returning to his own telescope.
With the coordinates written in his journal, Sander adjusted the dials to those coordinates before peering through the telescope. He slowly moved his telescope a little to the right and then up scanning the starlit sky. He was looking for a specific formation of stars.
He patiently took his time and was finally rewarded when he came across a cluster of stars that looked similar in formation to the Constellation Cassiopeia. Sander quickly pulled over his textbook and studied the picture of the Constellation before peering back up through the viewfinder...and he smiled. It was a match. He had found the Constellation Cassiopeia.
"Hey guys I found it. The Constellation I was looking for. Come over and have a look." he urged everyone.

Tessa grinned at the younger girl before returning to her own work. She roamed the sky with her lens, and smiled when she saw huge bands of white that seemed to be endless. "I think I see the arm of our galaxy," she said, panning over as the bands thickened, she was soon able to see the rest of the galaxy. "This is simply gorgeous," she breathed, watching as it swirled around in the sky.
She looked up as Lux called out. Leaving her telescope, she walked over to Lux. "May I see?" she asked, taking a peek as she wandered away to another telescope. "I don't think we have to write them down," she replied, straightening.

Tessa wandered over to look out of Sander's telescope. "You're quite good at this," she told him with a warm smile. Soon, he was finding Jupiter, and she took a look at that also. "Amazing how much is still out there," she said, as she stepped away from his telescope. "How much we don't know about the universe is simply fascinating."
She returned to her telescope with a smile. "Probably not, but I'll see what I can do," she told him with a grin, as she returned her telescope's view to Saturn. She began to count, but once she passed 100, she decided to stop. "I could be here forever counting those rings," she said with a laugh. "I think I would be better spending my time looking at other things!"
She continued to search the night sky... when suddenly, a strange object appeared in her view. It was strangely shaped, and strangely colored... "Guys," she said with a frown. "Any idea what this could be?" Had she just found an alien? She took a peek at the other end of her telescope and laughed. It was only an insect that had perched on the lens. However, she wanted to see what the others would guess it was before she made the reveal.
