The Forest of Dean is one of the surviving Ancient Woodlands of England, having existed continuously for hundreds of years. The forest is composed of both deciduous and evergreen trees. Most of the trees are oak, beech, and chestnut. Other wand wood trees the observant might see include pine, spruce, fir, alder and larch, but today we are not looking for any of those. Rather we are looking for rowan trees, and in particular the magical wiggentree if you happen to be lucky enough to spot one.
The portkeys deposit the students in a large clearing somewhere in the Woorgreens Lake and Marsh reserve. In one direction, just through the trees, there is water, and back the other way, more forest.
Ira counted off the arrivals, matching them with their permission slips, and then once everyone had arrived he began to speak.
"Here in this box are supplies, maps, sacks, and flare stones. The flare stones are your rescue signals if you get into trouble. Just place it on the palm of your hand, tap it with your wand, and it will shoot up in the air and light up, allowing us to find you. One map per group, choose amongst yourselves who you'll be working with, older students please spread yourselves amongst the younger ones. You'll see on the map a highlighted area, this is the area where you can use your wand, we have a ministry permit for underage magic in this area only." Got that? Good.
"Your task is to collect one of the three cores we discussed, or a sample of rowan wandwood. Use your knowledge of creatures, herbology, runes, defense against the dark arts, potions, and whatever other school subjects you find applicable in order to obtain these materials. Each person should aim to collect one item, but if a group manages to collect one of each item, regardless of how many of you are in that group, they will win a prize. If there are any questions feel free to ask them, but otherwise go. You have 2 hours."

This is the second part of the Wandlore class, the first can be found here. - Have your character apply what they learned in the seminar, and what they know from other classes in their attempts to get a core or wood sample
- react to any.... surprises that might appear
- any group which manages to get all four items (dittany stalk, kelpie bulrushes, augury feather, rowan wood) will win a prize.
- if your character doesn't manage to get anything you can still earn points, so RP however you like as far as your character's abilities go, I trust you know what your charrie is capable of.

Marigold smiled and answered Tora's question, "I have a a swishy Birch wand, 10 3/4 inches." She looked at the map with Tora, debating where they should go. She knew that the highlighted part was for underage magic, but they got the of age part covered.
"I want to find all four items definitely!" Marigold said. She looked around. If they followed that trees and went through there... they would probably find a lake. "If we go that way," she said, pointing, "then we could go to a lake AND see if there are any Rowan trees along the way!" Marigold smiled triumphantly.

I think, if you're okay with it, we should head through the trees and check the water for kelpies." Nodnod. "We can be on the lookout for rowan wood as we go, yeah? It'll be like...multitasking." And she hoped they'd be successful in finding most if not all of the items.
The seventeen year old looked through the supplies as she waited for Adi to decide if he wanted to head that way or not. They had everything they'd need, it seemed, plus their wands. She was anxious to get started.

They had been walking for what seemed like ages to Adi. And he was getting bored, having not come across any rowan trees. He wanted to go find a Kelpie. When could they? But then-
"Ella! Is that a Rowan tree?'' asked the boy pointing in the direction to the left of him. Suddenly he was all excited again. The tree certainly did not have any leaves. He waited impatiently for the girl to confirm or deny.
Anya was NOT a fan of portkeys. She was also not a fan of apparition. She also wasn't a fan of the floo. Anya just didn't really like magical transportation. It made her super dizzy.
... and apparently they had already found a Rowen tree? Nice.
The sixth year followed behind Elle Belle and the kid she didn't know. Oh. Right. Bowtruckles. Those could happen. "We could try summoning them?" she suggested to her other of-age counterpart. "Or if there's a knot in a tree nearby, we can try to find one."

Mo wanted to find everything too, but he liked to do it in an orderly way. And it would help if they had someone else join them, but then they'd get all slowed down by each other, and it was bad enough dealing with Alice in a rotten mood with only ONE little kid witnessing it. He shrugged and continued to lead the way toward the water, although he turned his attention to the bag of gear they'd been provided.
"Here you go, mate. You watch the map for us," Mo offered the map to Caleb with a nod before returning to rummage through the bag. "So I'm going to go for the kelpie. Those are pretty dangerous creatures, but we should be good if he's given us... yup." Mo pulled a bridle out of the bag and showed it to Caleb and... Alice could look too. If she wanted. Who knew what she wanted?
"Maybe you can help me corral one, if we spot it... or you can check around the edge of the water for dittany or a rowan tree. I think the augury is actually going to be the toughest." Unless the forest was chock full of 'em.

"Hello Professor, come to join the fun?" Or was he just making sure they talked to the trees.
It was really cute how they both wanted to make sure she was fine in this whole thing, even if her worry was a superficial one brought on by a dislike of failure. Puffers, you could always count on them to be so nice. Lottie was the obvious exception. Technically she wasn't even a Puffer. That wasn't the point though. Min and Wade were lovely.
Eeeep!! Doubly lovely because they were agreeing to finding the kelpie first!! WOOOT!! Bring on the danger---er...the learning...yeah... because they were totally wrestling the kelpie to learn. Whatever made that Ira guy sleep better at night.

Nothing like a good old adventure time. It was exciting enough that it was just the three Hippogriffteers in Forest of whatever, about to find themselves a Kelpie.. eventually. Wade's furrowed brows could tell you he wasn't too familiar with the compass lesson. Just needed a refresher was all, heh. Smiling, "Indeed. We should stick close." So whilst Min was checking the map and everything as they moved forward, Wade kept a gooood look around with his wand out in case of any surprises.
He thought he heard some rustling and noise, which got him turning the other direction, with his furrowed brows.. lessening as he smiled. It was Professor Botros. Wade waved towards him, "Hello, Professor. Lovely day out isn't it?" Since they weren't in any danger right now. His eyes glanced in the direction of Lex, his smile widening at what she suggested. Wrestling Kelpies.. It was amazing he didn't laugh about it, because the image of Botros doing that would really be cool. Heh.
Now they were going deeper in the direction they were currently headed. He tried to remember what he could about Kelpies. Yep, shape shifters as Min mentioned earlier, and also in the water.. Since they liked to drown their victims. He blinked. "You both know how to swim, right?" Wade with no question already knew, since he played some sports in the water and all. "Think we're close to the water, yet?" Hopefully it wasn't too far away, as right now his ears could only hear the rustle of leaves that they were stepping on.

Botros' shoulders sprang upward startled a bit, before he chuckled. "Miss Cambridge, nice to see the representative of class enthusiasm." Excited much? He gestured to the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff girls beside him, "We're traveling with you." See? He had his own group and was just a student today!

She was eager to get started so they could get this show on the road!

"You know what a Rowan tree looks like, right? It's a small tree." Just checking.
His Crup was bouncing around the small group and sometimes running far away to other groups and licking people's hands and feet. Just typical Feo being typical.
Botros approached a shrub, nahh not a Rowan. "Did you know that the Rowan tree used to be called the traveller's tree? It supposedly prevents those on a journey from getting lost." He mused and moved on to another tree.

"I guess we should go grab a map and the other objects from the box." Flare stones too. As much as Cassia didn't want to have to use it she still liked to use it just for the sake of it. Maybe they'd be allowed to set all of the stones off at the end of the trip? The snake glanced at the man weighing the thought. Ehh. If he wasn't in a bad mood by then probably. Seeing that other had already grabbed their stuffs, she took a couple of steps towards the box and looked back checking that Kat was with her.
Second time using a portkey, but the sensation was still disturbing. The first time was... in Kat's fourth year when the Hogwarts Express just stopped and all. Yeah, that was her first time... so this made her second one. Once they landed in the Forest of Dean, Kat stood up and sort of massaged her back. Because... uhm, yeah. Portkey stuff. It wasn't her best choice of transportation. She would've preferred brooms or Floo Powder, just saying. But then they had no choice but to use another portkey to return to Hogwarts, yeah? SIGHS.
Kat hadn't been to the Forest of Dean before, so this was definitely new to her. It was a pretty nice woodland/forest. Got lots of trees and plants and stuff. The Head Girl sort of admired the place for a bit, because they didn't always get to visit a place like this everyday. "Very. I've never been here before," she said and continued to admire the things around her. She refrained from touching things though, because well......... what if they were poisonous? They were in a forest after all.
Yeah, supplies and stuff. "Okay," Kat followed her Slytherin sister. She got a flare stone for herself, and then another one for Cassia. Because what if they separated and got lost? HAH, that wouldn't happen though. Not when she was Head Girl of Hogwarts. Nothing bad was gonna happen, Kat tried to convince herself that. It would be her fault if anything bad happened to Cassia. "Do you wanna do all or just one? Those who find all will get a prize." And Kat liked prizes. Who didn't?

He stood there, hands on his knees, trying to take deep breaths. Portkeys were just... not cool. Nope. Even if he had taken them on one occasion before which, now that he cast his mind back to it, hadn't actually turned out to be great. This one was better though. Yeah. He definitely preferred brooms to this.
Standing up straight again, Alec took another deep breath before looking over at their surroundings. The Forest of Dean... this was new. He looked over at Mr Banner when the man started talking about supplies. ... Wait... flare stones? Were they likely to get into trouble then? A small frown formed across the seventeen year old's face as he looked down at the two younger students and then back at the man. If something did happen, that called for being brave which... the Hufflepuff wasn't. His eyes then landed on Botros and the boy gave the man a small wave.
When the man finished talking, Alec turned his attention towards the two Ravenclaws. "You two okay? Ready to get started?" Here's hoping that they weren't worried about the possibility of getting attacked or lost. Hufflepuffs were particularly good finders, right? And Ravenclaws were wise. "Who's going to get the supplies?" Questions. Lots of them.

"Summoning them might be tough but I bet we could find some. Want to check the supplies and make sure they're not in there already?" Would instructor dude have included something like that? Ella handed over the sack of supplies to Anya-face so she could rummage through.
The blonde was squinting at the map when she heard Adi say something about a Rowan. He'd found it already?
"That...could be?" It didn't have leaves which was a good indication. It was also medium sized, unlike some of the taller trees that surrounded it. "Anything in your notes that could tell us for sure, Adi?" Hopefully.

Since they liked to drown their victims. He blinked. "You both know how to swim, right?" Wade with no question already knew, since he played some sports in the water and all. "Think we're close to the water, yet?" Hopefully it wasn't too far away, as right now his ears could only hear the rustle of leaves that they were stepping on.
Well Lex seemed super duper eager to go be drown by a Kelpie. Well hopefully not drowned, but Minerva's luck.. who knew what would happen. She looked at the map as they walked fearful of getting lost. She looked up a few times just to make sure she wasn't going to run into a tree or something. That would be embarrassing. She looked up blinking at Wade, "Swim? Oh yeah I now how to swim, but do you think it will get to that?" Couldn't they just freeze the animal and get what they needed? Probably not that easy, right?
She was starting to feel jumpy and realized Botros was still with them. Well if he was with them, they wouldn't get into to much danger. He would be able to protect them she was sure of it. Making sure her wand was tight in her hand, blue eyes kept scanning the area. She felt the knots begin as she moved a little closer to Wade. Kitty wouldn't mind if she was pretty much walking right up against him. Not that she was scared, okay maybe she was a little, but she could handle most things.
Stopping she looked around, "Yeah I think the water is right up there." if they had been going to right way at least. "We need a plan before we get where it can know we are around. It's going to work on getting us close enough, no getting on it, got it?" That's what it wanted so it could kill them, not happening on her watch. Did they understand that?
A little deeper in the forest, but not too far ahead from all you students, stands a wiggentree that almost appears to be glowing in what rays of the sun are able to make it through the canopy of the forest. You may not be able to see them just yet, but THEY are there.

"And I can look around the trees," he added. Getting in the water didn't sound like the best idea at the moment. And catching birds was going to be a pain. Caleb could probably pick out the wood, though. He started to wander towards some of the trees near the lake, looking to see if he could figure out which tree was which.

She tailed behind the boys quietly, following and staying silent for once. Until Mo started claiming items and the first year went to go locate trees, which was when Alice HAD to speak up.
"Rowans won't have leaves. Bowtruckles, though,," the sixth year called after Caleb helpfully. Kid wasn't daft, he could do the rest on his own. Mo could too, and he was taking on the responsibility of the kelpie.
That left her the bird. Joy.
"Guess I've got the Augurey, then." After another peek at Cactus- whom she was still miffed at, but was doing her best to be polite to- she started off behind Caleb, but not for tree harvesting. Alice was scouring the area for thorns and brambles, hoping to find an Augurey nest somewhere.
Why couldn't she have the trees?

He looked at Ella and the girl that had joined him. "Any ideas? Maybe we can find a dragon and see how he'll react to the tree.'' He was kidding, of course. He eyed the tree. It would have been so much easier if there were leaves.

While Minnie read the map she kept her eyes peeled. Just up ahead she could swear there was a lake. Was that it? Possibly considering Min was going on about how careful they had to be now. No getting on it's back. Got it. Lex nodded. "So how are we going to do this??"

With Caleb looking for the trees and Alice... grudgingly looking for an augury, it sort of left Mo to do his own corralling. It was lucky he wasn't particularly fond of these trousers, since there was no way to catch a kelpie without getting a little damp. Or there might be, but Mo wasn't in the mood to stand around and wait. He was going to wade into the water and offer himself up as bait.
And since Alice was already mad at him, and Mo was feeling all guilty about it, he glanced back to where she was kicking bushes and generally punishing the forest for existing. "Ace. Come hold the bridle while I try to get eaten. It'll be great. If I don't die, you get a fantastic story, and if I do, you can keep my liver." Or maybe his heart... it was always unclear which organs floated back to the surface.
Mo stopped long enough to roll up his trouser legs and remove his shoes and socks before he waded into the water. "Hey, Caleb... don't let the little suckers scratch your eyes out, ok?" Was it possible to be MORE cheerful about possible dismemberment?

Anya nodded. Yeah. The bit about summoning did make sense. That... and she really didn't want a bunch of insects flying toward her. Ew. Gross. "Yeah. I'll check the supplies." Not that she really excepted bugs or anything to be there.
She shrugged at the younger boy's comment. "I'm pretty sure any tree will give us bowtruckles." she said. That was sort of the characteristic of them, right? They guarded wand trees.
"Maybe it's a better idea to find a bowtruckle and work backwards?" You know, see which tree they came from. "Or we can just wait until someone yells and then grab whatever we need while those tree dwellers are distracted."

Definitely not the time to do sightseeing, although that was tempting. She wasn't sure when she was going to visit the forest of Dean. So as she walked along with Kat to the box containing all the stuffs, she let her eyes scan everything around her. She then turned to Kat and took the flare stone from her and turned it in her hands. Hmmm.. Interesting. Then she reached for one of the sacks and held out the map to the older girl. Because you know, it made sense that Kat held it. Though Cassia was going to peek and help and stuffs. Mhhmm.
"I don't see why we can't do all." She answered with a grin. That sounded like a challenge and needless to say that the two snakettes got tempted by this. The fifth-year only hoped that her memory cooperates and reminds her of what they just found out.
Although Herbology wasn't Cassia's best subject.... more like worse, she wasn't discouraged. Anything happens she just bolts and taps this stone. Her life was far too precious. Still she was going through this. Because prizes and fun. "Shall we go this way?" She suggested pointing in a direction a bit close to where the others stood but not exactly. She once upon a time was a navigator, yeah?

Tora actually wasn't entirely sure what a Rowan tree looked like, but she was sure that once she found one, someone else would probably see it too and then she would know what one looked like. The Professor seemed to know what it looked like though, he had said it was short, but looking around, Tora saw loads of "short" trees. How short was "short"? Maybe she would be able to identify it by the masses of bowtruckles trying to attack her or her adventure troupe.
Tora didn't know when she started calling it an "adventure" in her mind, but this activity was a ton of fun, and a little bit dangerous! So it qualified as an adventure. This just made her happy, and excited, and ready and rearing to go.
"That's a great idea," the Ravenclaw said turning to Marigold. "Let's go!" she started off into the woods in the direction of where the map had said a lake was. As she walked (and kept an eye out for little trees) she started up a short conversation with her party-mates. "I didn't know that actually," she said referring to the Professor's earlier comment about Rowan trees. "Since we're going on an adventure to search for wand materials, I think it's fitting that we're looking for a Rowan tree. So we don't get lost looking for it!" she walked with a little spring in her step, not skipping, because Tora didn't skip, but she was happy to be out and about on an adventure (albeit a very mild one)

If something did happen, that called for being brave which... the Hufflepuff wasn't. His eyes then landed on Botros and the boy gave the man a small wave.
When the man finished talking, Alec turned his attention towards the two Ravenclaws. "You two okay? Ready to get started?" Here's hoping that they weren't worried about the possibility of getting attacked or lost. Hufflepuffs were particularly good finders, right? And Ravenclaws were wise. "Who's going to get the supplies?" Questions. Lots of them.
Benzi thoroughly enjoyed portkeys. It was almost like flying just, y'know, without the whole heights thing. Benzi was not a fan of heights. Stumbling slightly as they landed in the forest, he took a second to regain his balance then looked around at his companions, noticing immediately that Older Hufflepuff Alec was bent over. He raised his eyebrows but said nothing. If HE was Older Hufflepuff Alec, he wouldn't want an eleven year old to ask him if everything was ok.
After all, Benzi didn't want to embarrass him.
"Yeah yeah I'm fine," he waved him off, then nodded at his next question. "I'll do it - hope you guys can read maps 'cause I've got no clue," he pointed out then trotted off to the Ollivander cranky bloke and grabbed the map, one of the stone things and a sack with all the things he'd said they needed.
Once he returned he put the sack down and the map on top of it, pocketing the stone. Best keep that on his person. "Now what?"

So, they had everything they needed now right? A map, flare stones for the two of them, and... yeah, pretty much everything. Adventure awaited them. Kat wasn't exactly sure if it was was, because harvesting and collecting wand stuff was definitely not her thing. But sure, guess it was cool enough that Kat got to do it with her Slytherin sister, right? But, you know, she was still aware. Because danger. Lots of danger. Bowtruckles and kelpies, you know? Her priorities for now, listed in order would first be Cassia, then her hair. Yes, hair was IMPORTANT. Preserve the hair. It was a necessary part of her and she wouldn't feel complete without it, honestly. Everyone should agree with that.
Oh cool, then. They were going to look for all of them then, if time allowed them of course. "Great." She grinned right back. It was a challenge, but Kat totally opened her arms whenever there was. It made everything much more interesting and less boring. Take a risk, yeah? Life wasn't 'life' without a little bit of that. Because you know... have a little faith.
"Okay," Kat nodded and followed Cassia. She'd let the fifth year lead for now, until the time when they start getting attacked. THAT would be when Kat took the lead. Because you gotta protect the younger one, yeah? Selflessness. "I'm guessing that they're trying to collect from a wiggentree? We can handle that later though, because bowtruckles." And Kat did not want to face one now. Save that for later. Besides, they might come across a stalk of dittany around here. Or an Augurey. Who knows? Creatures will be dealt later.

"The Wiggentrees are evergreen so let's go with that, yeah? There are some evergreen trees right over there, actually." Nodnod. "Let's investigate."
They might as well, right? Ella smiled a little and headed over in that direction.

With Caleb looking for the trees and Alice... grudgingly looking for an augury, it sort of left Mo to do his own corralling. Caleb turned back and grinned at the older students. "Don't worry, I'll be fine," he assured them. Bowtruckles weren't that scary, right? He knew that had some nasty fingers that could do some serious damage, but he would be careful. Anything could be reasoned with - or at least tricked into being reasoned with. He watched as the older boy headed over to the water with the captain, and Caleb was happy to have a few seconds alone. It was just...awkward being with those two when they clearly didn't get along.

Adi grinned at Ella's reaction to his suggestion about the dragons. He had not expected her to react like that because she was older and all but look at that! Her inner kid! "Yes! I'd love to see a real one!'' Though he'd probably run off in the opposite direction the moment it started breathing fire.
Yes, yes! Time no move on. No sense wasting time on the naked tree. Wiggentrees were going to be much easier to find. He would keep his eyes alert for the tree. And also for signs for the other cores too!
