Professor French awaits y0u at the door. You will have t0 squish in around his rounded b3lly through the doorway, but there should be room. As you enter, he scrutinizes Y0U thoroughly through his silver-rimmed spectacles, almost as if he were counting the hairs on your head or freckles on your nose.
Each desk has a small measuring tape on 1t.
The directions on the board read as follows,
Quote:
0N3: Please drop your bags and books at y0ur desk.
TW0: Ponder what your lucky number 1s.
THR33: Proc33d to the blackb0ard and write your lucky number.
F0UR: After y0u've written your lucky NUMB3R, write your F1RST THOUGHT after it.
Professor French has started you off...
9 - Ricky don't lose that numb3r, it's the only 0N3 you own.

Three? Sophie needed to relearn how to count because it was CLEARLY two. "I am NOT strange like a space alien," he told her defiantly. If anyone was a space alien, it was Sophie. After all, she couldn't even count.

Then something jammed into his back, his eyebrow cocked and he turned around to see the offender. Oh. Schuyler. Yep. The little mouse. Smirk. He knew her, not personally, but at this point he'd have to be deaf living in the Slytherin dorms not to have heard a load about her.
"Hey, gorgeous," he said easily with a smirk.
...Uh. No. He was actually really, really patient. He'd have to be to sit through all these classes and not say a word. Instead of saying any of that though, he just shrugged and looked down at his own key 'cause if he was four and a half metres from him....he was four and a half metres from her.
"Mine says you don't wanna be here." S'that true, gorgeous?

3. 333 is a nice number; It's a number. ; Fiesta aliens have taken over. I think I'm clever because I put the number 3 three times; This person is probably really attractive and interesting; I haven't taken my potions this morning.

4. How much longer? I don't want to be here.
6. I want pancakes I'm most likely a Gryffindor.
7. Lyon; Princess ; It’s been 7 hours and 15 days; Can we have beards again? I spell Lion oddly; I am really ditzy; I am saying nonsensical things for the heck of it; Ascanius Stark has a really awesome beard and I wanna match him.

22. Penguins Mate for life.
∞. Natural numbers are better for your health. I'm quirky. Look how quirky I am by answering outside the norm.
Aah, right. Ascanius had the habit of using 'gorgeous' and 'beautiful' in place of girls' names. Charm just ran through his blood, didn't it? So did good genes apparently. But from what she'd seen, he seemed perfectly enamored with her dormmate and only her, and so Schuyler didn't really care one way or the other. It's not like he was going around calling girls trollface or something.
He didn't really give off any signals as to whether he found himself impatient or not, but instead just supplied the answer for her from his key. Which, by the way, stated that she didn't want to be here. "False," she added openly. She wanted to be here. And they had found fault in this arithmancy divination.
But regardless of how accurate it was, she was still going to participate. "I guess we can do age, as well? Or height." Height might offer them some numbers that were actually different.

A HUFFLEPUFF?!
Oh, Merlin no! Sophie gave him the evil eye and shook her head. "Not a chance," she said. "I knew from BIRTH that I was a Slytherin, and that Sorting Hat put me there!" She started fumbling with her measuring tape again. "Get still again," she ordered. "I'm going to re-do this, since you were obviously wrong."
She took a few steps back and measured again. "Seven" she stated.
Quote:
7. Lyon; Princess ; It’s been 7 hours and 15 days; Can we have beards again?
"You're a Gryffindor girl with a beard," she declared.
Hmm... Hoping for nines? She couldn't help but grin as she took the measuring tape. She moved over to the nearest student and measured out three yards. That would be nine feet. Then she looked around her for the next nearest student, and measured out another nine feet. Doing a little math, she triangulated herself so that she was nine feet away from both of them at the same time. Wait, that was two... She looked around and tried to figure something out. Shifting so she was in the presence of three students, she managed to get herself 9 feet away from three of the students. (Sophie, Caleb, and Kace) She giggled at the thought.
Then she stopped and really thought. Oh no! How was she going to measure how tall they were from here? What if they moved? She looked down at her spot. She called out to the three of them, not thinking about the fact that they may not even know she was talking to them. She didn't even really know their names. "Hey! How tall are you guys?"
She was five feet... Hmm, how tall was that in inches? Uh... Five times twelve, 60. Reduce down to 6. So, five, or six. What about meters? Centimeters? Hmm... 1.524 meters, which is 152.4 centimeters, of course. (Duh, idiot) So, 152 cm and 4 mm. If she just added the basic numbers, that was 12, reduced to 3. Cool! If she separated the centimeters from the meters, then it would reduce to 8 anyway, plus 4, still 12. What about the other way around with meters? 1m, and 524 dm. So, 11, 2, plus 1, 3. Still 3... 1m, 5 dm, 2cm, and 4 mm. Okay, she'd just wind up with 3 again.
5, 6, and 3, depending on how she measured. 5 wasn't on the list, 6 was... oh, the pancakes. She interpreted it as hungry for something sweet. She kinda was, actually. And 3... 333, and it was a nice number, and something about aliens. She giggled again. Okay, so because 3 was a sacred number, she had interpreted it as something that was interesting. So, hungry for something sweet, or something interesting. And if she added them all together, it was 14. Was that on the list? She checked. Nope. And reducing it gave her 5... that wasn't on there either. She thought about it a bit. She... didn't exist? Well, that wasn't a great idea.
What about her lucky numbers? Hmm... if it was 318, then that would be 12, and 3 again. If it was 1168, that was 16, which made 7. She... was confused on 7 and hadn't really interpreted it. But if it confused her, then that would be confusion, wouldn't it? What if it was her entire set of lucky numbers put together? 3181168. 28... 10... That was 'what was the point?' which she took as boredom and the unknown. And reducing it to 1... not there. Oh! Since 12 was on the list, she should consider that too. Which was wanting something sweet again. Oh, and 16, the great questions of life.
Want, something sweet, something interesting, that didn't exist, confused her, answered the great questions in life, as she stood at the professor's lucky number by three. She took a deep breath and wondered what more she could do with it. Oh! Adding all the numbers together that she had come up with! 9+5+3+12+7+16=52, which reduced to 7. Okay, 7 again. Nothing new. Back to lucky numbers, she knew 318 was 12 or 3, and 1168 was 16 or 7. 12+16=28=10. Nothing new. 3+7=10. Nothing new. She kinda expected that, but double-checking wasn't a bad thing.
Finally, she said out-loud, "So far I'm standing on the professor's lucky number of 9ft, three times, which means 3 yards 3 times, 3 time three is 9 too. And under the professor's lucky number I desire something sweet and interesting that doesn't exist, and is confusing, which makes sense because it answers the great questions in life which are incomprehensible to the human mind."

Seven? Was she just pulling numbers out of thin air right now? There was no way they were SEVEN feet away. And she kept MOVING so naturally she was going to get different answers.
"Excuse you. I don't have a beard," he said, taking the high road and grinning, playing along with her. They didn't really need to fight in this class - they were going to get POINTS, so he was moving on to HIS reading rather than argue with her for implying he was a girl.
"Ok, so, seven..." he said, his voice trailing off. Oops. He hadn't taken that one seriously. But for real - look at it! IT MADE NO SENSE. HOW COULD HE INTERPRET THAT? He made something up on the fly inside. "I think it means that you're actually more of a Gryffindor than you think you are. You KNOW you're a princess though. Or you like to think you are," he teased her with another grin.

So that was it? They were just meant to walk around measuring how far they were from each other? Nothing else to it? Alexa shot a skeptical look at the Professor, not believing they'd just....measure especially when the numbers on the bored really didn't mean anything. They were made up and subjective depending on the key you used but there was no use pointing that out. It wasn't like he'd see logic.
Lex took the measuring tape then eyed the door. She had half a mind to measure the distance from there, you know, give herself an idea of how much crawling she'd have to do to get out but no. Instead she chose the person sitting in the desk directly next to hers.
Did they have to ask before measuring each other? The effort involved in that was ridiculous when you considered the nature of this activity. Her solution: Placing the top of the tape measure on her desk (using something else to keep it in place) then stepping back until she was a good 9 metres away.
Technically she was 9 metres away from herself...away from where she should be...look, she was reading herself, mmk? Great. Lex walked back to her desk to see what 9 was all about....being careful so she wouldn't have to do this a second time...? If this was trying to tell her to go measure actual people so the Professor didn't make her start over then it failed because she was going to continue regardless. Pity, huh?

She straightened out her measuring tape again and stepped REALLY CLOSE to him. "One!" she called out.

She said, offering one end of the measuring tape. She took a couple steps back then looked at the distance. "12." Give her a sec and she could tell you what it meant too.

Obligingly grasping the end of Lex's tape measure, she squinted at her key in thoughtful silence. Because Alice had been so nice about holding the measuring tape while she took the measurements Lex had no problem walking over to her so she could have her height measured. What she DID mind though was being told her key was wrong.
fvgsgrfigidsfg!!
"Everyone's key is wrong Alice. These are random numbers that don't make sense. We gave them meaning based on how we saw stuff. This stuff isn't anymore real than Divination." Lex loved Elwood and found the classes entertaining but she would never actually take them seriously. They weren't real. This right here wasn't real. NONE of it. She sighed impatiently as she was measured then made a face at the results. "No I'm not." Meaningless? Alexa? Hah. Good one. "For your information I did have breakfast, didn't?" Didn't EVERYONE? No? Well they would have missed on on some good chocolate chip pancakes. Just saying.
And now it was her turn. Lex looked first to Alice, then to the floor a little ways off. With a lazy swing of her hand she threw the measuring tape then looked down to see how far it'd gone. By the looks of it.....28 metres, by the looks of her key, there was no such thing. "Right, we'll say this was 4? Yes, 4, I like 4, in which case, you don't want to be here."Solemn nod. It was all about making numbers work for you.
How much longer would they have to do this?

SHE was awesome too? Nuh uh. "That's cheating! You have to use your OWN parchment," Caleb pointed out. She definitely hadn't written that she was awesome on her paper - right? There was no way. If she did...well, that was just another case of that weird twin thing that popped up every once in a while where they were just IN SYNC. But he doubted it. Because he was definitely the more awesome of the two. Obviously.
"I don't think there is one. He didn't even remember what class he was in" he whispered back. But hey, this was fun! They weren't actually LEARNING anything of value, but French seemed to really like them, so he was going to do whatever he needed to to keep that up - and get the points of course.

Parchment? She was supposed to be writing this down?! GREAT. She turned and whipped out a piece of parchment and a quill and began writing.
- Caleb is strange, like a space alien.
- Caleb is a Gryffindor girl with a beard.
- Caleb's is meaningless.
- Caleb unintentionally declared that I'm awesome.
- Caleb doesn't know why we're doing this.
"I didn't cheat. See. It's written right there," she said, pointing to her parchment. Then she looked up at French. He didn't know what class they were in? "You know," she said, "we could really benefit from that. Maybe I could ask him for help with some of my homework in the other classes, and since he doesn't know what he teaches, he'd just help me with all of it."

He managed to go find the tape measure. He went around the class looking for someone to measure. It seemed everyone had a partner.
While Adi waited for an answer from Sophie, he glanced around. And spotted his best friend! "Kace!'' he called to the wandering boy. "Need someone to work with?'' Adi grinned. Partnering with Kace was always cool. He waved his measuring tape. He should start with height.
Of course it was false, he mused. It was all a load of dragon dung anyway. This whole class, the Professor and all of it, but it was a low stress environment and Ascanius liked this class enough. It had helped him with his facial hair crisis at the beginning of the term, so he was indebted to it in many ways.
Smirking over at Schuyler, the little mouse, he said easily, "We should probably do height next, yeah? If you don't have any objections, beautiful." Not that she should. It was extremely straightforward and he wasn't keen on doing anything beyond or above was he was told to do. Or even do much of the talking stuff.
Much better to only speak when directly spoken to or out of necessity in a class setting.

Kace grinned when he saw a familiar face, "Hey Adi! Yeah i do need a partner!" He was so relieved. "Uh you can start with the measuring since i do not really get the concept." he said hastily. Maybe once Adi did it he would understand.
This was not Arithmancy... this was measuring random things. Sarah hated measuring it all. She had to do it though.. sigh.
She chose chose a random student, and began to measure... The distance was 182 centermetres... she should shorten that to 11, as 1+8+2 = 11... right...
She looked up 11: in her interpretations:
Quote:
11. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto ; cupcakes What? I will give Domo arigato themed cupcakes to Mr. Roboto
How was this meant to connect? Is the students name Mr. Roboto? Sarah did not know his name... so it would work.
Now height... lluckily this kid is a firstie, so he is still short.
"can I measure you?" she asked. When she got a positive reply she began..
He was 144cm.... that makes it nine...
Quote:
9. Ricky don't lose that numb3r, it's the only 0N3 you own. I tendd to lose things
Interesting... but thankfully it was garbage as how can one judge another based on what made up interpretations say?
She wrote down her notes:
SPOILER!!: notes
distance:
182cm = 1+8+2 = 11
Quote:

The boy's name is Mr. Roboto and he likes cupcakes and I should give it to him.. funny chance. Sorry Mr. Roboto, I am not a baker
Height: 144= 1+4+4 =9

He still did not understand, huh? Yep. It all was a bit confusing. "Never fear! I'll explain,'' Adi said with a dramatic wave of his hand. "Okay, so just use that tape and measure stuff like the distance from where you and someone was sitting or maybe their height then you use the number to see what your interpretations say about them.'' Simple now, right? "Here, let me show you.''
Adi held his tape from where he stood towards Kace. "Two meters,'' he read and reached fro his interpretations. "Are you feeling tired? And impatient about anything?'' Unlikely. Kace was a Hufflepuff...

"Oh ha ha. Very funny," Caleb said, sticking his tongue out at her. He looked down at his parchment and sighed. He'd done like a MILLION measurements, could they be done now? He sat down and leaned back, joining his sister as she looked at French.
"Based off of what he seems to know about the subject he DOES teach - I don't think he'd be much help," he pointed out. If this dude stuck around more than a year or two...they were going to be in SERIOUS trouble when OWL time came around.

OH now Kace understood it! Then he measured how much meters there were between them. He got 2 and he interpreted it. He did feel quite tired today. "Well i did feel quite tired today. I didn't sleep well. I am impatient to get back into my bed." he grinned sheepishly. Now it was his turn.
Kace took the measuring tape and measured the amount of space between him and Adi. He measured and it was 3 meters. He checked his page first.

He smirked an awful lot. Maybe that was part of that charm.
"Height's fine with me," she nodded. Years of dance attributed to her already straight posture, but she lifted her chin just a tad in case he wished to measure her height with the tape measure. She was going to tell him anyway. "I'm 5'6", so.." Then remembering the units, she made the conversion and added, "167 centimeters." Schuyler had committed the number to memory, but even after months of living here, she still wasn't completely accustomed to the metric system. It was a nuisance that the United States didn't just use it to begin with.
"We could break the number down by single digits and use the key for each. Or we could add them all together." Whatever worked, because there weren't all that many numbers on the key to work with in the first place.

He got down on his knees and put the tape down by her foot and stood up tall to measure it up to her head, 'cause the beard Professor wanted all of them to measure for themselves. Though he appreciated her notation. Easier to just take her word for it and pretend he got the same thing. 'Cause he wasn't gonna look, yeah?
Anyway, he just smiled at her and said, "We can add them up, yeah?" After all, that was what Arithmancy usually did, yeah? And if they added up all of her numbers, which was 167, it'd be, "14. Do we even have a fourteen on our key? Y'know what? Let's add those two numbers up, which'll be 5...which means..." He glanced down, "Nothing again...s'not on the key."

Hmm once he looked at it, he asked Adi, "Do you have a curiosity of the unknown?" he asked his fellow puff. He knew he did but he wanted to know if his friend did.
Great! Kace had gotten the hang of things. Adi was surprised at his friend's response. An impatient Hufflepuff...hmmm. He supposed Puffers weren't always patient then. "Everything okay?'' he asked, concerned. Why was Kace not sleeping well? Was it something to do with Marigold? Oh yes. Adi had been observing but had not said anything. Yet. He watched as Kace measured for a second before jotting down:
Quote:
1. Kace is impatient to get back to sleep.
Now a question for him! "Very much so!'' he replied. "I'm most curious about aliens. Do you think we'll ever meet one?'' Because this first year sure would love to meet one!
And it was his turn to measure again. Adi took three great big steps back and measured. "Six meters. Do you plan on making pancakes soon?''
