Default What in Merlin's Beard? Term 32, 2078-2079

A bit confused about the plot? Housemates talking about a mysterious something going bump in the night? Here's where you can catch up on happenings around the Castle, Diagon Alley, and Hogsmeade -- out of character, of course.

This means that unless your student character heard this stuff from other students or witnessed the actual event, your student character doesn't know about it.

Also, this is a reminder to everyone to only post updates on the school plot here. Please do not post the happenings of your student character in here - that kind of chat goes in the school chat thread.

Have fun!

Looks like Bunz and some of the Professors are still trying to solve the Common Room lock out problem at the Fat Lady's Portrait.

Text Cut: It's a bird, it's a plane, no it's Bunz and the Professor to save the day!

The professor stepped forward beside the other professors and held up her wand and waited anxiously as the countdown came down...what could go wrong....right?

She fought closing her eyes and she flicked and said, ""Anfth Eeshtrak Fimbaarah!"

On three. Three would be casting the counter-charm, and four would be casting the shield charm. So many threes.... "One," she started counting, hoping this would work. "Two." This HAD to work, because she was all out of ideas otherwise. The redhead raised her wand and pointed it to the common room door, "Three!"

"Anfth Eeshtrak Fimbaarah!" she shouted in time with Isabel and Medea.

She knew very little about that variation of magic, and the fact it seemed to be written in what Fina had pointed out to be blood, had her even more worried. Looking across at the woman, the chew on her lip got tighter and Issy began fiddling with her wand.

When Medea told them the counter-spell, she repeated it over and over in her head. It felt much like being back in a lesson right then. But she was going to have to help, it would take more than one of them to perform it. Flexing her fingers, she nodded across at her fellow professors, feeling the force of the shield that had been cast. "Ready when you are."

Now, what was it again? Anfth Eeshtrak Fimbaarah...

Gah not the time to worry about Leo and his social skills or apparent lack there of.

She didn't miss the look on the Headmistress' face either. She hadn't stuttered yes she had said Egypt and it seemed to mean something to the woman.. a lot of somethings actually.

Hmmmm... The small frown that had formed when Leo dropped his wand deepened.

"I..I don't know much about this charm to feel safe enough for Leo to be the only one casting it..I'll help reinforce the shield." She raised her wand. "Protego Maxima!" She turned to look around at the others..."Can cast the spell on three..." She said after the headmistress removed the fat lady's portrait. "On your count Headmistress."

Now let's get this over it.

Oh! Josephina. The more the merrier in this case. "Anfth...Eeshtrak...Fimbaarah." she repeated clearly for them to hear, though uncertainty crossed her features for a moment. "Best not to mispronounce it too much."

Even if they did have shields, dark magic was still dark magic, regardless of where it came.

The redhead turned a shade of white normally only reserved for her favorite cashmere sweaters and nearly JUMPED when Fina finally popped up.

"I think..." she swallowed, realizing her voice had come out in a whisper, "I think we'd better make this as quick and painless as possible." She reached up for the portrait and took it off with a muttered counter to its sticking charm. "Sorry, Fat Lady." Annie propped her against the wall facedown. She'd just have to wait.

She gave a nod to Leo and a shrug to Josephina. "I don't know what it is." Did it matter at the moment? None of the students were missing as far as she knew. "Can you also cast a shield charm on us while we four cast the counter-sealing...spell?" Annie mentioned toward the Arithmancy professor.

Toward Medea and Sophia, thank Merlin for them, she added a soft, "Mind repeating that counter-spell?"

She heard talking though as she approached the portrait, where she knew to guard the Lion Common Room and stopped short at the sight of the crowd of professors already there. And ... what was that writing on the entrance? Was that ... ".... blood?" Fina spoke, almost inaudible, but enough to alert her colleagues to her presence, that she'd finally arrived.

And she had a real tongue twisting spell. "I still need to protect us with a shield charm, right? The counter spell might rebound or cause other things to shift when the dark magic get's undone?" Leo asked. Dark magic was never simple.

"Indeed." Her arms crossed, glancing to the group, rather excited. "Some perhaps could say it's a play off of vot vould be a sealing spell, used in precious tombs. Keep things out and in. The counter spell is in the same egyptian tongue: Anfth Eeshtrak Fimbaarah."

Quite the word twister.

"Actually yes I do. I'm pretty sure if we try blasting this door open the spells will rebound right back on us and Leo's shield will do little to stop it from hitting us." She rolled up her sleeves and cleared her throat.

"Lets see what we're working with here..sperevelio" She said with a flick then swish of her wand. There was a barely audible whizzing sound before a writing appeared written in what seemed to be blood on the entrance.

"Merlin's holey socks!.....who..who would use such a dark spell?" Sophia looked at Medea..."This is dark Egyptian magic..can you undo this Medea?"

Isabelle folded her arms and started tapping her wand against her chin gently. She looked over at the others and took a deep breath. "I do get the feeling this will require something more intricate from us, rather than brute force." Because, as she's said, that hadn't worked for her last time. "What suggestions do you have?" she asked Sophia, echoing Leo's question. Brainstorming, people.

Gulp. At least the Headmistress wanted him to be in charge of holding up a shield charm when the women tried to break in. Leo nodded in confirmation. "I can do that." Hearing Sophia's comment he glanced over and asked "Do you have an alternative method to blasting the door open?"

She cleared her throat quietly. "Perhaps we could try something other than blasting?" She quite liked this dress and didn't want to have it singed.

"Maybe Leo could cast a shield charm on us and hold it while we try... something," Annie suggested. "And we'll need to take down the Fat Lady as well." She nodded and stepped forward to remove the portrait.

...or to try to remove the portrait...

Sophia's expression. Ahem.

Oh! The headmistress. Good.

Taking out her wand, the one question that popped up in her mind was answered by Isabelle. Well, that was good to know. Trouble for them but, indeed good to know. "Perhaps not one, but five blasting curses at once could...do the trick."

Flicking her wand out, Issy gripped it tightly in her right hand and and flexed her wrist. She looked across at Leo when he spoke, clearing her throat to make a suggestion. "I tried using a blasting spell down at the barrels, but it just rebounded off and hit a wall. We should certainly protect ourselves if we cast all at once."

They were the professor's after all not him.

But when the headmistress beckoned him over Leo strolled up to the group of ladies catching the tail end of the headmistress orders. Unholstering his wand he asked all the women, but mostly the headmistress. "Do we cast our spells all at once or one at a time?"

Would the walls make the spells bounce back at them?

And this was certainly not going to be a party. Pausing at the top of the stairs to catch her breath, the redhead beckoned the librarian to join the group of the female professors and then she herself joined the group.

"All right, staff," she planted herself firmly in front of the Fat Lady's portrait and stared the woman down. "We've got four locked common rooms and four of us, plus Mr. Kitridge if he joins us. We need to start firing off spell after spell until we blast this thing open."

As for the Fat Lady? "Madame," the Headmistress put on her best smile, "we might need to move you...." before she was damaged in action.

Isabelle had climbed so many flights of stairs, having started down in the Great Hall, that she was slightly flushed in the cheeks. Taking a few deep breathes, she nodded her head at the two women and mustered up enough breath to speak. "Medea, Sophia... Called into action too, I see."

This really was serious.

Aho, so Medea was there already..well if they needed the both of them this must certainly be something serious.

She dropped the front of her dress letting it sweep the floor again and moved closer to Medea.

Her expression, clearly said..'explain.'

She supposed her Annex being destroyed had a lot to do with what was going on here as well.

"We asked you all to bring your pets because we believe that they are the best way to be able to identify when this entity is around..." she paused and glanced at the pigmy puff on one of the students' shoulders...o how she wished she could pet the cute little thing, "We do not believe that it will hurt your animals, but they have a special sense that can detect when he is around..." she paused to see if the other ghosts wanted to add to that.

She took a long breath and then continued, "This entity is one all four of us have heard of, in legend, really..." she shook her head back and forth slightly and her eyes glazed over as she began to share, "He is a very tricky little entity that can not be trusted from a long time ago...actually none of us even knew that he was still around...but somehow this old pain has found his way into our beloved school and he must be stopped..." she paused again to see if any ghosts wanted to add anything....

"Hello lovelies! Thank you all for coming to visit our favorite meeting place..." she said as she glanced around the room and then she felt guilty because for a ghost it was great but for the living it was rather dull and gloomy...candles...yes she thought there were candles somewhere...

She floated towards a drawer and spoke to no one in particular, "Yes, I believe there are some old candles in this drawer and someone could use the Incendio charm to get them burning once they are in their holders..." she said in a rather monotone voice....she hated that she couldn't pick them up and light them herself.

The ghost floated back towards the students and decided that it was time to get this little meeting started, "The Friar..." she paused as she nodded at the ghost, "and the rest of us called you all in here to discuss something very serious...we have found out whom locked the Common Rooms..." she said crossing her arms over herself once again.

"Could somebody bring some light to the room?" There were candle holders in here if his memory wasn't failing. And besides he didn't want to spook the students. A dusty and dark meeting room with glowing ghosts was enough to give anyone nightmares.

BANG! CLING! CLANNNNNNG!!!

Cupboards were forced open as if on their own accord and their contents were flung out into the room. Pots bounced off the floor, silverware danced about the room, knives were flung into the walls and the huge mixing pot was turned up on its side. The students that were nearby were smacked with whisks and spatulas and the ringing of the pots and pans was deafening.

Then just as soon as it started things died down and the room was basically destroyed.

Oh dear...looks like the house ghosts won't be going anywhere for now... O___O Just what does this Isfret want?!?!?

Way to work the dead ladies Dylan & Milton! Finally got some answers in the Girl's Bathroom:

Slytherinnnnnns.

She let out a girly giggle and half-curtsied to the Slytherin. "BOYs are never a hold-up for meeeee, My Captain....of course I'll help you out." she giggled again and then tossed a pigtail toward the Ravenclaw, in case he wanted a 100+ year-old whiff of her perfume. Ghosts still smelled like what they died in, right?

Anyway, the Isfret storyyyy. BORING. Myrtle stifled a yawn before even beginning to talk, then talk she did. "A long long time ago, someone brought some Egyptian stuff to Hogwarts and the magic of the school woke up this ghost guyyyyyy named Isfret, who happened to live in this fancy schmancy brooch." Myrtle's grey eyes flicked toward the redhead who was obsessed with cheap jewellery. "Isfret was like a herrrrrrrrro at first to the ghosts, but then he went bad or something- like I said, I wasn't there, so I didn't get to hear the whole story -and the ghosts did this spelllllll to banish him."

She giggled. Again. "I guess it worked for a whileeee til Isfret got all powerful again. Then of course he had to come back. For revenge!" She tiltled her head sideways and made eyes at the Ravenclaw boyyyy. "Isn't that romaaaaantic?"

The tendril of the Umbrella Vinora was reaching just at the hind end of the creature/statue and was uncurling a rather deadly looking vine when Professors and children came close to the Gate. The tendril shot back into it's rolled up original form and retreated from the area.

"MOR- GET THIS THINNNNNG AWAY FROM ME!!!!" Isfret shrieked as the cat started to PEEEEEEEE so close to him! EVILCATEVIL! OH-AND OTHER TOO!! "AWAY!" He yelled throwing burning books at each of the cats.

BURN CATS! BURN BOOKS! BURN LIBRARY! THEY HAD BURNED HIS PLANT! THEY HAD KICKED HIM OUT OF HOGWARTS BEFORE! THEY WOULD ALL SUFFER!

Isfret's eyes suddenly widdened so busy with the cats, he hadn't noticed the Headmistresses wand. "NO! NO! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!" The ghost hollered as EVERYONE of those stupid teachers and snot nosed brats began to say THE WORDS. "SHUT UP!" A gaping hole appeared in his stomach, growing bigger and bigger as each person uttered the incantation, expelling him from the castle from the inside. Isfret could only scream in rage, and soon only his face was left.

That was when a wicked smile crossed his face, and the exact moment that he vanished completely a giant ball of flame exploded in the library. Fire roared clinging onto books, bookcases, floors, and even the Librarian's hair.

The vengeful ghost Isfret was gone.

But the library was on fire, and the fire was quickly spreading.

"Eighteen years ago, I came to Hogwarts and was given the mission of teaching basic flying skills as well as rebuilding the Quidditch program. At first, I thought I'd hang around for a few years before moving on but that obviously didn't happen," he said as a few camera bulbs flashed in the crowd. "I turned down several offers to coach on the continent because I was committed to my job here at Hogwarts. This school - all of the past and present staff and students - became my second family. And like a family, there have always been ups and downs but at the end of the day we were always there for each other."

Pause.

Deep breath.

"I have watched students grow and blossom from unsure First Years to confident Seventh Years, ready to take on the world. I take great pride in saying that I've trained most of the current professional Quidditch players in the British and Irish Quidditch League. Whenever I read the papers, names of former students stand out and I remember how timid they were when they had to sit on the stool as the Sorting Hat was placed upon their heads."

Another pause.

"These are memories that will be with me always, but now it's time for me to move on," Vindictus finally stated.

"Today was my last day officiating Quidditch at Hogwarts. When the school term ends, I will be leaving Hogwarts as I embark on a new chapter in life. As the new Chair of the International Association of Quidditch, I will continue to promote the sport as well as improve the safety of the game. For those who may wonder, I will resume officiating at the international level in the fall after going on tour for my upcoming book."

A final pause.

"I'm going to miss this school - it's students and staff, the smell of the damp stones of the castle after it rains, the smell of dusty old books in the Ravenclaw Common Room, and the smell of freshly cut grass on the pitch. The realization that this is the end has yet to sink in. Thank you."

Max was finished and he looked at Annie. "I didn't know how to tell you," he whispered as he kept his composure. "I'm sorry."
We'll miss you, Professor V!

Looks like the House ghosts are finally revealing some much needed information to the Headmistress over at the staff table.

He waited a few seconds before beginning the story. "Many, many years ago, 271 years ago to be exact, a few items were brought back to Hogwarts from an expedition in Alexandria, Egypt. This was back in 1807 and the items brought back included a scarab beetle, an Old Kingdom papyrus scroll, and an alabaster statue of the goddess Bastet."

"Unbeknownst to those at Hogwarts at the time was that the scarab beetle was something more than just an ornate object. The beetle contained a ghost named Isfret. The magic within the school awakened the Egyptian ghost who first revealed himself to the Friar. Isfret charmed the Friar to allow him to perform good deeds around the school." Quieting down Sir Nick motioned to his fellow ghosts to take up the thread of the story.

In turn, the Lady, with myself in tow, introduced Isfret to Sir Nicholas. To gain the approval of Sir Nicholas, Isfret showed him a trick that would allow him to join the Headless Hunt. Sir Nicholas was delighted that he could now join the hunt, and went off to tell the Baron of the glorious news."

He looked toward the Baron expectantly.

It was obvious to Isfret that I was not a ghost to cross, and he said a few inaudible words in Egyptian that made my chains vanish. Relieved that I no longer had to carry the burden of the chains, I insisted, to the delight of all, that Isfret be allowed to join the ghosts at Hogwarts."
MIGHT have been nice to know all this sooner

Bunz has given her speech at the end of term feast! Good bye to so many members of the staff! Congratulations to Hufflepuff! Congratulations to Gryffindor! Good luck 7th years!

Thank MERLIN for filthy people who wouldn't remind the additional dirt of a dirty animal on them.

Now that that was done, though, she had no further reason to delay the speech. So the redhead shook off her frog fears, smoothed out her dress, and moved around the table to the podium for her speech. The redhead waited for the students to quiet, and then began.

"Good evening," she spoke, her voice magnified to echo around the Hall. "Tonight we gather to celebrate the end of a dramatic term, and the end of the arcs of several of our beloved staff members. I would first like to extend my deepest regrets for the passing of my friend and Astronomy professor, Mrs. Marion Burbage. Mrs. Burbage was a legend amongst stargazers in her day, and even in our day as well. Her lessons were memorable, helpful, and fun for all students. She was always willing to lend an ear to a troubled soul, and she will certainly be missed by those who knew her well."

She paused to remember that she still had to break the news to Henry regarding his wife's demise. That was going to be a horrific evening...

"I would also like to mention our mysterious, but very talented, Ancient Runes professor, Tristan Christiansen. Mr. Christiansen was not only one of Hogwarts' most popular visiting professors, but he also regularly held the post of Senior Undersecretary to the Norwegian Ministry of Magic." She let that sink in for a moment. "His loss will doubtless have an impact beyond these stone walls."

As for the others they had lost... well, Annie figured it would not be appropriate to mention the beautiful Umbrella Vinora, tragic as that may be. "I am also sad to report that our Deputy Headmaster, Ravenclaw Head of House, Quidditch Official, and Flying Professor Maximus Vindictus will be resigning from school staff at the end of this term. Vindictus has served this school longer than anyone, or at least anyone in recent memory, and what he has given to this school cannot be summed up in one speech alone." Annie felt a tear at the corner of her eye and flicked it away as though it were a stray eyelash. "I am proud to present a Special Services to the School plaque for all your years of service, Professor Vindictus." The redhead walked over to Max's seat to thunderous applause and proudly gave him the award, along with a handshake.

Then she returned to the podium. "I am just as sad to announce that our Groundskeeper Gibbins will also not be returning at the end of this term. Although he has not been staff nearly as long as our Flying professor, Mr. Gibbins was an excellent addition to staff and will be sorely missed." Sigh, just another person she would have to hire over the summer.

"Now, onto some happier news." She smiled grimly. "Congratulations are in order for Hufflepuff House, who not only demolished Ravenclaw in the Quidditch Cup Championship Match," that got a real grin from her, "but who ALSO won the House Cup! Congratulations, badgers!" She beamed and waited for the cheers (and jeers) to subside for the 'Puffs. "I would also like to congratulate Gryffindor for winning the Gobstones Cup! If you contributed to your House's performance in either of these sports or games, or even in the House Points race, then give yourself a round of applause. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work."

She paused and wished she still had a water goblet to drink from. Alas... "Finally, a few parting words are in order for our graduates from the Class of 2079. You have all been excellent leaders and standout students in my eyes, especially in the many moments of crisis this school has seen throughout your time here. Remember that whether near or far, whether you study, you work, or you roam, Hogwarts will always be here to welcome you home. Thank you."

The Headmistress FINALLY exited the podium and returned to her seat. Once she had sat down and let a sigh of relief, the delicious elf-prepared feast appeared on all five of the (returned) House Tables. Let the summer begin!
