Default Observatory

Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in the Hogwarts Observatory you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. This circular but spacious room has been locked and opened as many times as there have been Astronomy professors staffed at the school. The huge telescope that Professor Anteres had put in several years ago is still here and fully operable. Students are very welcome to try and use it. If you need a hand Mrs. Burbage is always somewhere close by and can lend you assistance. If the giant telescope is too much there is always smaller telescopes stored away in the cupboards around the room which you can borrow and use as you please as well as other astronomy objects.

Large star charts are pinned to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Don't try and take the charts down though, as they are charmed to warn if somebody tries to remove them.

Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory remains unlocked. Students adhere by a curfew and after that hour no students should be found out of bed. If you desire to study the heavens after curfew, you need a signed note from Mrs. Burbage showing that you are allowed to stay up after hours. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences like loss of house points or detention.

The observatory is place for scientific inquiry much like the library is a place to immerse yourself in books, since it’s a shrine to our massively beautiful universe. Please respect any teacher or student spending time in the observatory by not running around or shouting in high pitched voices. Just because Mrs. Burbage isn't currently in the observatory doesn't mean she isn't watching what is going on.

Oh to be back able to use the school's astronomy tower and the large telescope within.

Gideon had been antsy to get up there but hadn't had a chance to see about getting permission to stay up there after regular curfew. So rather than wait or risk trouble, the seventh year prefect decided to head up while most were still finishing dinner, that way it was still early to get a decent amount of time to stargaze as well as be less likely to be disturbed.

And it wasn't as if they couldn't bring dinner with them...them being him and Selina seeing as Gideon had invited her along. She had seemed to do fairly well the last time they had gone together so it would likely be fun once more. So with a bag carrying a few sheets of notes he had thought they might use tonight as well as napkin-wrapped sandwiches he had made up from the offerings downstairs, the Gryffindor took to the stairs, finally coming up out onto the oberservatory level.

The sixth year was rather glad that her boyfriend had offered to have dinner up in the Astronomy tower tonight. Before heading up to meet him in the Astronomy tower, Selina had made a quick stop at the Great Hall to say hello to her friends and to also remind the Gryffindor table to sign up for Quidditch- being that it was the last day to do so. However, when she had gotten down there she saw that all of her posters for her beater bat had been taken down in the Great Hall. THAT was not a nice thing to do at all. Didn't the staff know that she was looking for her bat?! To take down those posters would just delay her search. It was like they were trying to see how much she could take in her heart before it burst. Well, if they were curious, she was very close. Being without Mortimer was very emotional for her at the moment, he was her baby. So she would not have been able to stomach a poster-less Great Hall at dinner tonight. Gideon's suggestion was spot on for what she needed. She needed a distraction from this whole thing.

Running up the endless stairs to the astronomy tower, Selina finally entered the observatory. It looked just as it had in all of her years at Hogwarts, except now it was much cleaner. For some reason, the redhead had a feeling that the spritely Astronomy Professor had taken the time to do some much needed dusting up in this tower. The observatory looked really, really nice.

But the thing that she noticed most of all was the tall, curly haired boy in the center of the room fiddling with a bag. She smiled in spite of herself and leaned against the door frame to watch him in his element. It was probably something that Gideon did not know, but Selina always liked to watch him up in this tower. He came to life in this tower- he just looked so comfortable here. Everything about his stature was just relaxed. It was a very different Gideon in the midst of the stars then the Gideon who had to be the prefect and the paragon of student leadership throughout the rest of the school.

So she did not speak. She did not say anything. She just watched him work in the tower, trying her hardest not to break the moment that he was creating all on his own.

Gideon wasn't aware he was being watched, not even sure it was about time Selina joined him. He had gotten too attached to what he saw with his bright green eyes, the Gryffindor being entirely in his element. It was where his mum could loose herself in her work and had easily passed the situation on to her middle child. Setting his bag down at the base of the telescope for safe keeping for now, the seventh year had decided to check out things before settling down. To see if anything had really changed much since his last appearance.

For one thing, the house-elves had kept things tidy, else the professor had done some cleaning herself for her part of the castle. For another....there seemed to be one or more new charts and diagrams attached to the stone walls, the boy slowly making his way to the circular room's perimeter to look the various new items over. No harm in looking, just charms to alert someone if you try to move them. Gideon had made that mistake during one of his earlier terms, having only wanted a closer look at the sheet while comparing it to what he saw through the viewfinder of the telescope.

There was that minor new discovery his mother had mentioned in passing as he prepared for the new school term. And an adjustment made to a previous calculation. And possibly a new drawn map of one of the constellations often seen further down south.

Interesting, very interesting.

Interesting, very interesting.

A broad smile tugged at her lips as she watched her boyfriend drink in the vastness of the night sky. She tried to stay as still and as quiet as she could for as long as she could. The last thing that she wanted to do was interrupt him, especially when he was in his zone. Ever since she had gotten to know the real Gideon- not the one that the rest of the school saw that emoted authority as a prefect- he had these moments, she was not even sure that he knew about them himself, were he would just get engrossed in his passion. When he was in that mindset he got a focused yet relaxed look on his face and he always ran his fingers through his curly hair as if he was trying to figure out the great mysteries of the universe. It was those small little things that he shared with her, even if he was not aware that he was sharing them with her, that made her love him.

To say that the road to their current relationship had been an interesting one would have been an understatement. The two of them had started out as friends and eventually started to be something more. Unlike most normal people, they ignored the very obvious signs that meant that they liked one another. Eventually, they started to date, but it was not easy. Everything that they were now was built on the blocks of their experiences as a couple. While most of the time it had been a great relationship, they did have their fair share of rocky days. However, they had worked to stay a couple for the period of time that they had been together. Most couples at Hogwarts rarely lasted a few months let alone two and a half years. And she firmly believed, the reason that they were still together, was that they fell in love with the little things about one another. She could not speak for her own boyfriend, but she loved a ton of little things about him. She loved when he got nervous and ran his fingers through his hair; she loved when he at a loss for words and would just mumble and blush; she loved how he played the guitar in the Common Room when he felt like no one was watching because he was far too modest to show off; she loved that whenever a younger student needed help he would always go over and try his best to help them; she loved how he always looked at her first whenever he entered a room; she loved how much he loved the stars and how he looked at the sky... like he was doing right now.

As all of these thoughts raced through her head, she let out a soft, breathy chuckle. He really had no idea how much she cared about him and every tiny piece of him. With that in mind, she softly walked up behind him and wrapped her arms around his middle so that his back was facing her front and her arms were wrapped around his chest. She rested her cheek on his back and smiled, "What are you looking at?" She had no doubt shattered his zone when she had moved to disturb him, but she could not watch him anymore. Selina really liked the rare moments when he let his share his passion with her. She felt like she was getting a small peak into his little world. And she liked that a lot.

Gideon switched his gaze from the boards to the open air over the banisters as the sky darkened the last final bit from the orangy red sunset that had taken place when he had first travelled up the stairs catching glimps through windows to the night sky that was now visible. It would be a perfect night since there had been very little cloud coverage during the day. And sure enough the stars were already sparkling bringing his attention back to the task at hand. Stargazing proper and not studying what others had found interesting enough to post.

As he had decided to move back to the telescope, he stopped, his head tilted as he thought he heard something or rather someone, but before he could turn to investigate there were arms around his waist and pressure against his back and his look of curiosity turned into a smile. There was only one person who would be so close to him like that and Selina was that person. "Just looking over what Professor Burbage added recently." It had to be her seeing as the papers were pretty recent and Professor Roslund hadn't been there for at least a year.

Gideon tried to look back at Selina but the way she was it wasn't the easiest move to accomplish. "So...have fun sneaking up on me?" he asked as he slowly manuevered and slipped around so they were at least facing each other.

As much as she wanted to let him have this moment forever, she desperately wanted to join him in the Astronomy Tower. It wasn't often that the two of them got a chance to spend time with each other. She cherished their time together, so she interrupted his alone time with the Astronomy tower. They did not have a lot of time together after hours. She wanted to get the most out of their time together now that they were getting some one on one time.

Once she wrapped her arms around Gideon, she felt him tense up a little. However, it was obvious that he knew she was the one who had snuck up on him. Gideon did not even miss a beat when she hugged him. Her boyfriend answered her quickly, which made her smile. Biting back a grin, she said, "Anything interesting?" She knew that he was always on the lookout for new things in the sky. Although, his Mom was usually on top of everything new being discovered.

She beamed at him when he snaked his way around so he was facing her. Yet, when he asked her about sneaking up on him, she chewed on her bottom lip rather embarrassed. Her blue eyes cast down so she did not have to lol him in the face. In a small voice, she said honestly, "I-I wasn't sneaking up on you... I was watching you. I've been here for a while, but I didn't know how to disturb you. You were in your element. I like watching you up here." He was his own person up here.

Gideon's attention was momentarily drawn back to the papers and such he had been looking at only a few minutes before. "A few things, though not anything to deal with tonight," he answered seeing as the timing was off, especially with the one that had emphasis on the summer months. Not there wasn't plenty of things to look for nowadays, some of which might be in his notes he had brought while others would be play by year as they just simply enjoyed the view of the evening.

She had been watching him?!

Cue blush at least on the tips of his ears, the boy being tending to be all self conscious about the whole thing of being the center of attention, his hand playing at the back of his neck beneath his curls. "No fair..." he mused as he half-reluctantly pulled himself gently away from Selina so they could work. "I'm usually too busy playing myself to see ye in yers." Well he did always manage quick glimpses of her during games... and the rare times she played during practices. Though when she was flying during Vindictus' lesson he got more chances to watch her.

Must push awkwardness away. "Anyway...shall we?" The seventh year pulling his hand away from his head and holding it out in the direction of their usual perch by the base of the telescope.

Whatever Gideon was looking at prior to her arrival had to not have been anything new or extraordinary to him. He did not seem entirely over-enthused with his answer to her question about what he was looking at for it to be anything remarkable. Then again, he always found everything in the night sky remarkable. So her word choice was horribly off color. Regardless, he was not seeing anything new in the night sky. It was just the same night sky that perplexed and amazed him. So she opted to not respond to his statement. There was no need if he did not see anything new.

However, once she was wrapped up in his arms she was rather embarrassed by her admittance to watching him work. It was not like she was trying to be awkward or weird; she just really enjoyed watching him do something that made him happy. In turn, it made her happy. Yet, her eyes that had been downcast to avoid his eyes, looked up at his face when she felt his one hand leave her waist. Upon looking up at him she saw his hand running through his curls. He looked rather embarrassed himself. Great job, Selina. Way to make this awkward.

The redhead turned a deeper shade of red closer to her hair when he admitted that he could not watch her in her own element. She did not know that he even watched her at all when she played. "Well... maybe you should blow the try outs so you lessen your chances of making the team. That way you can watch me play this term." She attempted to lighten the thick awkwardness in the room with her statement, but it was rather difficult. The awkward was just so prominent.

With a smile on her face, she nodded, "We shall..."

Selina redfaced was always a sight to seen, though she never did quite come to a point to match her hair. But then he supposed that would be too much and likely the sign that something was wrong like struggling to breath or such. There was an attempt at levity given, however Gideon couldn't help but raise and eyebrow at the girl's suggestion. Highly amusing that idea.

"Right...and risk making the captain upset? Pfft I'll think of another way." Merlin knew she'd be upset if he didn't do his best at try-outs,(or rather she teased him mercilessly about it) Not that she was the reason he worked on playing his hardest, that was simply his personality to strive for what he could. Being able to please the girlfriend was meerly an added benefit to the whole matter.

"Very well," he said relaxing into a smile as he lead her over to the telescope and took a seat, leaving plenty of space beside him for his skywatching companion. The astronomy buff had come to realize since the first time of bringing Selina into his haven that the activity was so much better shared. Perhaps that had been why his mum had been exstatic when he himself wanted to share it with her.

"We certainly should be able to see much in the sky tonight." Gideon pulled out his notes from his bag and laid it out in front of them. On them were celestrial objects visible from the point in Scotland were Hogwarts resided. Then after briefly making sure the viewer was working and properly adjusted, he turned to Selina... "Ladies first."

"Ladies first."

She bent her head a little to try and stiffle her laughter at his witty comment. He was right about one thing- trying out for the team was in his best interest. His girlfriend, aka the captain, would not have been very pleased with him if he did not try out. It was not that he automatically made the team, in fact he usually got a harder try out then most, but more that she wanted to see him try out. The redhead would have had the ENTIRE Gryffindor house try out if she could make them all. However, whoever did not sign up just had no house spirit and did not care about the victory of the lions. Or at least that was what she told herself.

Her blue eyes flickered up to Gideon with a bemused smile. She winked at him quickly before cheekily adding, "Good boy." The sixth year liked the fact that he took a lot of her small jabs and usually could dish his own right back. Most boys would have been grossly overwhelmed and offended by a girl indirectly calling their boyfriend a dog. Or at least a pet. Although, if they were being honest Gideon was not a dog, he was more of a bird. Yet, she really did like dogs. Maybe she would invest in one over the summer. Maybe a basset hound. They were tough, but they wouldn't be bigger than her small stature.

A small blush crept up on her cheeks when he lead her over to the telescope. He seemed to have this entire thing pretty much under control. That was one of the reasons she liked her boyfriend so much. Gideon was a planner, he was very calculated- although, she did have the tendency to bring out his spontaneous side- so that everytime she was with him, she did not feel like he was grasping at straws. He made her feel sort of safe, which was a girlish notion. A girlish motion she did not mind indulging in. Not with him. He just sort of made everything easy for her. She never felt like she had to be anything but herself with him, he had the rest under control.

She took a seat as he scrounged for his notes in his bag. The captain twittled with her fingers as he adjusted everything so it was ready and when he spoke she looked at him. He, ever the gentlemen, was letting her look first. Her lips curved into a beaming smile before she added, "Why thank you, sir." The redhead leaned into the telescope and looked at the night sky with perfect vision. That was when she spotted something, "Gideon... what is that thing? It's too bright to be a star...."

Gideon could see the fight not to laugh in Selina's mannerisms, they had known each other long enough not to miss such quirks of each other. "Aye...go ahead and laugh," he said as he stuck his tongue out at her and her cheeky remark. Nope...no dog here, just a guy who was nice to a girl who he happened to be dating at the time. Even if that did make him appear as loyal as a fine canine.

"Yer welcome," Gideon answered with a soft smile, leaving Selina to her viewing. It wasn't as if he wouldn't get a chance himself. Besides he liked watching her watching the night sky and astronomy was his own like that he could share with her that she seemed to enjoy as well. Unlike potions of course. He raised an eyebrow as she spoke once more of something she had spotted within the telescope's viewer. Something brighter then a star? He hadn't seen anything that fit that description earlier with the naked eye or when he was focusing...did he?

"Um...I'm not sure..." he answered hesitantly, not one usually to admit he couldn't identify something in the night sky. What could it be? "May I look?" the seventh year asked figuring to try and get a good look before making any further remarks. Maybe Selina's judgement on the object was off.

She pet his head one last time when he stuck his tongue out at her. If he was going to stick his tongue out at her like a dog, then she was going to call him such. Then again, the sixth year had always been a fan of nicknames for her boyfriend, much to his dismay. In fact, she had only recently discovered one of her favorite nicknames for him. Of course, Gideon was not a fan of Mary; however, if they were going to be Watson and Mary he was going to have to deal with the nickname. Besides, it was a compliment. Sort of.

When she settled into her seat on the ground to view the stars, she smiled at him quickly before she looked into the telescope. Everything that she was viewing was sort out of her comfort zone academically. When it came to the stars and plants and the like, Gideon was the man who knew what he was talking about. If they were talking flying or food, Selina was the girl to talk to. But her boyfriend was a fan of the stars. And he knew a LOT about them. So it always was a nice way to spend quality time together. Especially because he was so passionate about it.

However, she was not sure exactly what she was looking at when she identified something beautiful in the sky. So when she asked Gideon and he requested to get a better look, she handed him the telescope without hesitation. The redhead smiled at him and said, "Go for it, mister astronomy man. You know more than I do." And she was actually interested in what this thing was... whatever it was.

But, just because she could, as her boyfriend started to look in the telescope she rested her head on his shoulder while she waited for his answer. She figured that she might as well make herself comfortable while he looked.

Despite the fact that she always had trouble remembering constellation names and technical details, Ariadne had always liked stargazing. Even as a child, she would sit on the porch next to her mum and her favourite uncle, craning her neck to look at the beautiful night sky. After all these years, it was still something that relaxed her, particularly after a stressful week. Which is why she rushed through dinner and made her way to the Astronomy Tower.

The big telescope in the room made things rather daunting, so the girl went for a small-sized one and walked around, trying to find the perfect spot. The place was almost eerily quiet, but to her it was more romantic than anything else. Which made her think of Jory. She hadn't seen him since that lovely weekend in Hogsmeade, so it was only natural that she would miss him.

Jory had nothing much to do and he was running away from studying. Not that he had not tried to hit the books, anyway. He supposed he would finally get down to it as the exams drew closer. Nothing like the last minute.

Soon, the boy found himself wandering towards the Astronomy Tower. He always liked it there since the stars, the moon and everything else fascinated him very much.

There was quite a few students there he noted as he looked around. He hoped he would find someone he knew but no such luck.

Until... wait. “Is that Ari?’’ Jory wondered, excitedly. He hadn’t seen her since Hogsmeade. He made his way over to her. Yes. It definitely was her. “Hey, Ari,’’ he said as he reached behind her. He was very pleased to see her. The Badger had missed her a lot.

Hailey Morrison had never set foot in the Astronomy tower--why should she when she had never attended an Astronomy class? Really, there was no reason to look at the stars but in her attempt to locate places within the castle that she hadn't seen before, her little feet had taken her to the room with the telescopes. At least, that's what she liked to call it.

When she finally reached the landing, she took in the vastness of the room, right up to the domed ceiling overhead. She felt relatively tiny in the overlarge room. Turning a bit to the right, she noticed the huge telescope that was taking up most the space in the room. Hailey walked up to it, carelessly touching the many posters on the wall. If only she knew anything about constellations at all, perhaps the posters would have been of some use to her. As it was, though, she was completely bamboozled by them.

Upon reaching the telescope, she reached out her right hand and gripped the eyepiece. Then she slowly brought her face closer so that her eye was right on the lens. And then she blinked.

"What the heck? I can't see anything!" She complained loudly. There were plenty of knobs on the thing but she had no idea to turn them in order to actually see something.

What a waste of a trip.

Oh, the astronomy tower. The nerd bird had only been here a few times for homework. It was a subject he didn't really liked but did the work any way for extra credit. Not like he needed it; but it was better for his grades. Besides, he had an unsettling feel that he should head there right now. So reasons to him being here. Thankfully, it wasn't so crowded like he had heard it usually was. This was where some couples came to be alone.

Except for Rose and himself.

They were usually in the grounds, just wandering. Upon entering, he already heard the voice of that one person who always had no idea what they were doing in class. Sighing, he walked behind her and whispered, "You need to move the knobs around to see through it," into her ear. With a small chuckled, he kissed her temple and hip bumped out of the way.

"Why are you up hear? Wandering again?" he asked, turning the knobs and trying to get a figure to show up.

Itching to touch some of those knobs, Hailey raised her left hand and twisted one at random. She was so absorbed in this that she didn't hear the footsteps behind her. But when Mikey whispered in her ear, she jumped slightly (A GHOST?!) and whipped around.

"Oh, it's only you," She said with a sigh. And then she was being pushed out of the way, though not in a rude manner. So she stepped aside and let the genius work those confusing knobs, admiring him at the same time. Cough.

"Yeah, I realized I had never set foot here so I decided to come explore...since it's our last year and all." Was that a sadness in her voice?! Was Hailey Morrison actually going to miss school?

No. Not at all. She was just going the miss the place where her and Mikey had gotten to hang out to their heart's content.

Mikey laughed. "Only me," he continued to turn the knobs around. After turning a few more knobs, Mikey managed to get a picture in the telescope. Still turning what he guessed was the zoom knob, he looked over to the constellation poster and tried to identify it. No such luck right now.

"It doesn't feel like our last year. Maybe when NEWTs come along, but not right now," he said, nudging his head for Rose to come over. So far, he managed to see three stars aligned and he knew it was Orion's Belt. A common constellation but he never managed to see the full thing. It was only ever those three stars. "Were you looking for a specific constellation or just wanting to look at the stars up close?"

She didn't bad for saying, 'It's only you,' because he knew she didn't mean it in a bad way. So Hailey just shrugged her shoulders and grinned.

NEWTS? Oh man. NOT what she wanted to hear right now. "Thanks for reminding me," She said in a toneless voice. She shuddered to think how bad she would do on them. Trying to put this out of her mind, she stepped up to the telescope again and looked in: stars! Her face lit up as she squished her eye closer to the lens. "Oooh what is it?" She asked.

"I just wanted to look at the stars up close," She responded as she finally let go of the telescope. "Show me another!"

Mikey sighed. He had to remind himself not to mention exams around Rose. But he did have to help her study or else he'd feel really bad if she failed. "Sorry," he apologized. But Rose's quick mood change about the stars made him smile. "That's Orion's Belt. The three stars aligned together are his belt, but I never manage to actually see the full constellation. Maybe tonight will be my lucky night," he said, pointing to the stars on the poster next to him.

He always found the Big Dipper and the smaller one. Those were pretty easy to spot out. Another? Well, he might as well go for the easy ones. Scooting Rose over, Mikey took control of the telescope and looked for either dipper. "So this is like a date?" he asked, laughing and turning knobs once again on the over sized telescope.

"His belt?" She asked with raised eyebrows. Why would anyone want to spot some guy's belt? She glanced at the poster he was pointing at and studied it for a bit; it certainly seemed too complicated for her.
"Don't they have pretty constellations that resemble ballerinas or tutus?" She asked seriously as he took control of the knobs once again. Because those would be really really spectacular.

She had to stop herself from rolling her eyes at him. "Some date. It wasn't even planned," She murmured but smiled anyway. Come to think of it, she didn't think they had even gone on one date.

Lame.

"Yeah, he was a warrior, according to legend. I don't really know much about him except for the stars," he explained. Mikey didn't pay much mind to constellations or their origins. He mostly never had the time to do so. Mikey gave Rose a weird look and slowly shook his head. This girl was never going to be impressed by anything unless it's pink and girlie. Searching for another constellation, more to Rose's taste, he laughed at her comment.

"But those are the best kind. Anything can happen, really,"

"A warrior? Ew." That obviously wasn't cool enough for her. Warriors were gross and bloody and fought all the time. Making a face at his weird look and shrugging her shoulders, Hailey sighed. She wanted to see some more stars. And it was starting to get cold up here.

Wrapping her arms around herself, she raised her eyebrows again.
"Unplanned dates are the best because anything can happen? How?" Because clearly, nothing was happening here. Unless you counted Mikey looking up stars for her. Which she didn't because that was his job.

Resident Ghost of Gryffindor | Chivilrous & Sociable

A head plopped out off one of the cupboards and was soon followed by the transparent body of Sir Nicholas, the Gryffindor House ghost.

Nick floated around the student deserted observatory restlessly. Something was not right within the school, he could feel it in the stone walls just as clear as he still could remember how a big slice of his favourite chocolate cake tasted.
