For this late evening lesson Mrs Burbage own tower patch has been widened and extended to work as an outdoor classroom by the help of the daaarling headmistress Annie. Over the plants, neat rows of desks and chairs have been scattered out two and two together. Up front Mrs Burbage dressed in warm robes under a long red outer coat and a rainbow colored scarf around her neck is sitting on the edge of her desk waiting for her students to arrive.

Landon Hughes stared blankly at the Professor while others answered her question. He had no clue who Aurora was, so maybe it was a good thing he was actually learning about it today. Though, he was excited to see the Aurora Borealis. Mhmm. Even if he didn't look like it.
But he'd at least try and guess an answer to the question. It never hurt to try right? Even though he knew his answer was wrong.
"I don't know any Roman myths about Aurora but wasn't she some girl who fought a lot of things and stuff?" He shrugged.

"The lights are named after a roman goddess called aurora. Before I share with the class why the name is misleading can someone please share the roman myth about aurora with the rest of the class?"
She was disappointed they weren't watching a meteor shower, which could be very soothing on a night like this. Cold, though... Vivi gave an involuntary shiver and returned her attention to the professor.
Something about Aurora? "Her siblings were the sun and the moon," Vivi offered, propping her chin on her hand. "Which means she was literally stuck right between them. The morning by birth order."

Oh. And a Roman myth. Oh, Anya knew quite a few of Greek ones. But... since they were... pretty much the same... she'd be able to get away with it, right? Her hand went up. "Aurora. Roman Goddess of the Dawn. She once turned an old guy into a grasshopper." There was a little more to the story, but she figured that was the important part.

Roman myths...She loved mythology, Greek and Roman... Aurora...She sounded familiar. She tapped her head telling herself to think! Her hand shot up into the air after realizing who she was. "Aurora is called the Goddess of the Dawn. She announces the arrival of the sun." Yeap...That was pretty much all she remembered, it wasn't a very well know goddess
Northern lights! Those had always fascinated Jake. He didn't know why... probably just because he liked astronomy in general. Mostly stars... but... yeah. Nothern lights were cool too.
And now they were talking Roman myths. Which, surprisingly, Jake knew. Score one for having two little sisters that demanded bedtime stories, yeah?

Hearing Anya's voice, Jake perked up and listened to her. When she was finished, he raised his hand. "That's because the guy was her lover. And he became immortal... but not forever young. So he was just... old. And Aurora didn't want that, I guess?" So turning him into a grasshopper was the obvious solution.

They were going to be watching the Northern Lights? There was a biiig grin that spread across this Ravenclaw's face. He started looking around, looking for a particular somebody. He's been wanting to have this opportunity to stargaze and now they had the chance! Yes incredibly distracted he was peering into faces near and far in the dark that he totally missed the question.
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes
The Aurora Borealis? The Roman goddess Aurora? Yeah. Max knew about 'em. But instead of adding to the information the others were sharing, the seventh year sat with his head propped against his arm on the desk, a bland expression on his face.
Everything was almost over. This was probably his last astronomy class, wasn't it? And instead of making the best of it by perking up with all the right answers, Max let the sadness overwhelm him. He tried to appear at least remotely attentive so no one would bug him about his demeanor, but as the others discussed Aurora, Max just thought about how unfair it was that this was just going to be another class to add to his list of 'lasts.' Why... couldn't he just stay forever and keep learning and enjoy everything Hogwarts had to offer?
Max peered around the room at the other seventh years - he looked to his fellow Ravenclaws Vickers and Vivi before his gaze fell upon Kurumi.
She seemed to be in her fairly normal state of knowing everything - no sadness from her. She was probably just focusing on soaking up all she could for their NEWTs.

Oh. So she WAS right. They were going to be seeing the Northern Lights? Bliss smiled proudly to her self. She was glad to be right. That being said, she was often right, but that didn't make it any less important. Looking back to the front, she listened to Professor Burbage carefully. So now then. Which myth were they confused with? Or something like that..
THINKING FACE TIME.
She had no idea.
Bliss decided not to risk some crazy idea this time and just kept her hand and eyes down, instead, just waiting for someone else to answer or for the teacher to explain more. Because frankly, Bliss had no idea this time. She knew all the scientific facts about the Northern Lights, but nothing to do with any myths that it was linked to.

What? Roman goddess? Aurora? Seriously? Being pureblood, Kat didn't really know everything about the Muggles. She kept quiet, because she was not sure about the answer she was about to give. But she didn't even have an answer or explanation to say.
Kat listened to the others as they said their answers. Aurora was a.... what goddess? Dawn goddess? That's cool. MENTAL NOTE: Read more about Roman Mythology in the Library... or in the Muggle Library.

After listening to some responses, Jory raised his hand. "Some Roman writers called her the mother of the Winds,'' he said.
Roman myths? Oh yeah, Selina was excited because it indirectly related to Latin. And everytime Latin was involved, it was a good time. Because Latin was the coolest language ever created. That was why when professors explained new spells and it butchered the Latin, Selina was a little sad inside. Vergil would not have been pleased.
But this was mythology, not directly Latin. So she rose her hand and said, trying to boil down her excitement that she knew an answer, "She was this REALLY awesome goddess who, mythology had it, would fly around in the morning and reign in the lights of the sky... Or, like, the sun." Could they do Latin now?!
Sarah did not know about Roman godesses - she did not believe in Myths either. The very fact that myths were mentioned set her off the track completely. Aurora was a name from a fairytale - was it a nice name? Sarah did not know. She never knew much about the mythology side of things because she did not like hearing rubbish. Yes, Sarah could be very opinionated sometimes!

Daichi, don't make me go all prefect on you, she thought to herself.
She adjusted her position then raised her hand high in the air. "Aurora is the goddess of the dawn," she said. "Roman mythology says that she renews herself every morning then flies across the sky. She supposedly does this to announce the arrival of the sun." Kind of pointless, really, since everyone could just see the sun rising anyway. If they wanted to, at least. Sierra, however, chose to sleep in when she could.

Well... Northern Lights was easier to pronounce so... he could still continue to call it that, right? Right. He wasn't even going to try to pronounce the Aurora Borsomething word. Hopefully, it would be easier to spell if they were going to have to take notes and such.
...
Australis was easier to pronounce, actually. Pity.
Oh, but they were talking about the word... 'aurora'. Well, mainly the Roman Goddess. This was... interesting. Alec rubbed his chin thoughtfully. He was sure that he had heard something to do with aurora... years ago. Something... something...
"Erm... Professor?" he asked, raising his hand slowly, "I think... she was the goddess of dawn and... and..." Think, Summers, think! "She'd fly around every morning just to let everyone know that the sun in coming?" You know, a bit like a rooster.

Astronomy NEWT studies were clearly driving the Gryffindor insane.
Kurumi then glanced up at the woman when she asked about the Roman goddess and her hand went promptly up. "Aurora is the goddess of dawn in Roman mythology and was said to fly across the sky to announce the arrival of the sun," she began before taking a pause. The woman hadn't asked...but it seemed sort of unfair to leave the god out of the equation as well. Boreas that is, being the god of the north wind and therefore translating the name Aurora Borealis to 'northern dawn.' "She painted the sky with the colors of the sunrise...much like how the Northern Lights seem to paint the night sky like the sunrise." At least that is how it appeared to those naming the natural light display.

Yes like some of the Christmas movies would show those pretty lights meaning they were at the North Pole. To actually get to see them made Minerva a little excited.
Listening to the question Minerva put up her hand, "Professor she was the goddess of dawn or morning. They believed that she flew around the sky and produced each morning for people to wake to." Minerva then sat and listened to everyone else respond to the question as well, but her eyes stayed at the sky not wanting to miss the pretty colors at all.

Nothing like a good story to get her all settled in for bed.
She got into a more comfortable position on her chair and prepared herself for what should have been an epic story--most roman stuff was epic, right? Weren't the the ones with wars and swords and funny outfits?? Listening to her classmates filling in the missing parts of the story woke her up just a bit more. Good thing too 'cause the Professor didn't seem too happy about Daichi falling asleep.
At some point during the lovely bedtime story she felt the need to interject--she used to do that with her father all the time. "Professor...how did she managed to fly ahead of the sun? Isn't it always there?"
Someone please tell her this wasn't one of those classes where they tried to spoon feed first years a bunch of lies in the hopes of proving just how gullible they were.

The myth about Aurora was soon heard from all around the outdoor classroom. Some answers she knew were just wild chances while others showed interest in Roman mythology and maybe even romance. Heading back up front she called to Daichi over her shoulder. "I'm glad you've woken up Mr Katharos and are now actually taking part in the class. Otherwise I've would have asked Ms Greingoth to lead you back to the dungeons to see Professor Lafay." Sleeping in her class was rude and disrespectful.
"Aurora is the Goddess of Dawn and she renews herself every morning before she zoomes across the sky just before the sun rises to announce its arrival. Without her the sun wouldn’t rise from its hiding place. The sun is always there like you pointed out Laura but the Earth isn’t static it moves on its axis just as we are talking right now. By moving the planet also regulates how much light from the sun we get. When it’s night here it’s because the sun currently isn’t shining on our part of the world."
Marion paused for a moment to gather her thoughts. "Auroras as the lights are also commonly referred to are a natural light display in the sky, that occurs in high latitude region when energy charged particles collide with atoms in the thermosphere. The aurora we see near the north magnetic pole here in Scotland usually has a greenish glow or sometimes a faint red."
Locking down at her watch she clapped her hands and jumped on the spot. "Everyone turn your heads to the right and look up at the sky. We should in only a minute see the lights with our very own eyes."

Marion sat down on her desk and watched in awe as the natural lights display lit up the night sky overhead. It was a breathtaking and amazing sight which she hoped the student’s appreciated just as much as she did. Seeing things with your own eyes she concluded triumphed over just reading about things in a textbook.

Minerva listened to Burbage talk about the goddess. Then she had pointed then to look up. Looking up she didn't see anything and then there were colors, such pretty colors. "Wow" she said in amazement. She looked over at Ethan and smiled, this was amazing. She wished the sky looked like this every night.
Wondering why the sky could be seen at this exact moment she put up her hand, "Professor, why is it that we can see these lights tonight, but not any other night? Is the planted tilted the correct way or something?" She figured it was alright to ask questions at the moment while they were looking and she just wanted to know why this was and when could she see it again.

Wow, this mythology stuff sounded cool! Or, at least, that story was pretty cool. He glanced over at Alec and gave him the thumbs up. So he'd been right! Wow, he was super smart.
Okay, Pao had some questions about these auroras. She had explained them but... he wanted to know MORE. He raised his hand. "Professor, why does this only occur in high latitude regions? Like, why aren't there charged particles in other places?" He skipped over the thermosphere part because he didn't know what it meant. "And for that matter, why does it give off red and green colors? Are there other options?" Perhaps nature just really liked Christmas... or Italy!
And then she was instructing them to look at the sky. He waited with bated breath, then suddenly jabbed Alec in the side and pointed. "Oh, look!" As if he couldn't see with his own eyes...

Ella quite liked all the stories that went along with the different Gods and Goddesses. She liked the thought of a woman riding out each morning to announce the sun, like the sun was a royal or something. It made her smile. It didn't hurt that it reminded her of her Granddad either. That made her smile too.
Something that didn't make Ella smile? Max. His lack of interest in what was happening actually worried the third year quite a bit and she found herself watching him with a concerned expression on her face. This was Max! He knew all kinds of things and he was super smart and she was sure he would normally be sharing his knowledge only he wasn't...Something was up and Ella wanted to know what. Looks like she'd be needing to have a talk with her Hogwarts big bro sometime soon.
Then Professor Burbage was announcing for everyone to look up and Ella looked away from Max to see something that made her mouth hang open slightly. "Merlin's beard." She said quietly to herself, eyes on the amazing glowing that was happening in the sky above her. A small smile played on her lips as she continued to watch, fascinated by what she was seeing. She felt really lucky to witness this, especially here at Hogwarts with her friends. "It's beautiful." She said to herself, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She'd seriously always remember this cause it was truly spectacular.

Wowwww. That really was amazing. The colors seemed to dance across the night sky, and Alex wished he could get a picture of this. Imagine how cool it would be moving across his wall each and every night!! But he was still a bit hung up on that Aurora bit. He was confused--she was a GODDESS? He was pretty sure he'd heard differently.
He raised his hand. "Professor? I'm confused...I thought Aurora was a princess who pricked her finger and fell asleep until her true love kissed her and woke her up. Is that not right?" he asked, wrinkling his eyebrows.

As instructed, Max leaned back and tilted his head to the right to peer up at the sky, not even noticing that Ella had been watching him. When the particles in the thermosphere high above began to collide and the color changed above the class, the corners of the Ravenclaw's mouth turned upward ever so slightly. It was... so bittersweet. So incredibly bittersweet. It was as if the heavens were treating the seventh years to one last magical sight as the term neared an end.
But, of course, as sad as he was for his forthcoming departure, Max couldn't help but find the beauty and splendor of the sights they were witnessing tonight. A mild aura of peace washed over him as he observed the Aurora Borealis with wonder.
Ethan took his eyes off the night sky for a moment as Burbage confirmed the answers given and expanded on them a little herself. He looked up into the sky again as she began describing the light phenomenon.. and he jumped a little as she suddenly clapped her hands. The boy glanced over at her and then.. oh, to the right? He had been looking in the wrong spot anyway.
Ethan turned his eyes upward and his head slightly to the right.. and waited. And he didn't have to wait long.. he soon saw ribbons of green trailing across the sky, then filling it with color and followed by red. The boy emitted a low, "Whoa." This light show was pretty spectacular. He stole his eyes away from the sky long enough to sneak a look at Minnie. Catching her smile, he offered her one of his own and moved over a little to stand closer to her. This was just too amazing not to share with someone.
He watched a little longer, then looked over at the Professor to ask a question. He wanted to know why certain colors were produced.. but upon hearing that same question being asked by a young Hufflepuff, he decided on another question. "Professor, why are these lights named for the Goddess of Dawn? I mean, she supposedly heralds in the morning sun.. and these are colors in the night sky.. what's the connection?" Because it didn't make a whole lot of sense to him.. no matter how much he liked these Northern Lights.

SPOILER!!: Aurora Borealis green
SPOILER!!: Aurora Borealis red
Marion sat down on her desk and watched in awe as the natural lights display lit up the night sky overhead. It was a breathtaking and amazing sight which she hoped the student’s appreciated just as much as she did. Seeing things with your own eyes she concluded triumphed over just reading about things in a textbook.
Whoah would you look at that....
He has seen photos of this phenomenon many times, but he will gladly say that nothing beats actually seeing the Northern Lights play out live right before his very eyes. And to think that such breathtaking wonders of nature is partly caused by a solar phenomenon that, without the Earth's own remarkable atmospheric defenses, could eliminate every life on this planet. Dangerous beauty as it were....
As the light show played and intensified in the sky above them, it illuminated the students' faces clearly enough for Vickers to recognize those he knew instantly-- he spotted Max first, the Minnie, Kurumi, Sierra..... and then Vivi. He found himself staring at the Ravenclaw blonde for a moment before looking away... realizing something rather sad. He had always wanted to do stargazing with Louisa, and so far, he hasnt seen her anywhere in this garden patch. He shifts his gaze back towards the dark colorful sky, lost in thought....
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes
The little Ravenclaw slouched in her seat and titled her head backwards, letting the moonlight fall on her pale face as she searched the sky for the colors. The anticipation was making her impatient, but once the lights started, she knew she would've waited a very very long to see them again. This is absolutely beautiful! she thought, her breath nearly taken away by the beauty of it all. She focused on the green areas, though the red patches were neat too, she'd always been partial to cool tones. This is just amazing, she marveled.
Students started asking questions while they observed, but she wished they would have all just stayed quiet. She tried not to let them interfere with her experience with the lights though. Her wide eyes reflected the green shimmers of light and she felt extremely serene as she tried to memorize the awe of nature in front of her.

Vivi settled back in her seat, head tilted back so she could see as much of the sky as possible. It was funny that something like this happened all the time just over their heads (or not really all the time and not exactly over their heads, but close) and they failed to appreciate it.
She glanced back at her classmates, many of whom were enjoying the site, but her fellow Ravenclaw seventh years appeared distracted. Max received a cheerful thump, and Vickers got a tap on the shoulder. "Just think... when you're off seeing the world, you can see every color the Aurora Borealis comes in. You'll have to tell me which is your favorite."

Hannah was having a really hard time believing that this was all true. So this Aurora chick lives forever and ever? What happens if she were to die? Would the sun never rise again? It could not be true. Maybe this was the myth that she was talking about. Heck, Hannah needed to pay more attention. She listened intently to everything that the professor was saying then she watched as she looked down at her watch and seemed to get pretty happy. It was time? Even she had to admit that she was looking forward to see what all the talk was about.
She turned her head in the direction that the professor asked and was stunned. "That's beautiful." It really was beautiful, there was no denying that. Her classmates had asked some pretty good questions so she waited to see what the answers would be. For now she continued to look at the lights becasue they were afterall, beautiful.

Gideon listened to the various versions of the Aurora story being repeated by various classmates, his own knowledge of the tale to shaky to voice what he knew himself. However most of it was covered over time and Professor Burbage summed it up in the end to round out the whole imagery once she made it around the circular outdoor room. The seventh year obediantly turned his head to the right to await what was to come as he gazed up and out into the sky.
Sure enough, within the short time period the professor had mentioned, the night sky peeled off from just being a deep dark blue almost black to shades of greens and occasionally a touch of pale red. The Aurora Borealis had made its appearance. His eyes wide in fascination. The features of the night sky always amazed Gideon but he had to admit if asked that the lights were one of the things that topped his list of wonders.
They were absolutely beautiful!
This was why he was fascinated with astronomy...the wonders of the universe displayed for all those on earth to see at the right time and place. And the Northern Lights were something created with the very atmosphere of of the planet, not many million miles away.

This Roman Myth stuff wasn't making very much sense anymore. Which goddess was she and how in merlin's beard did she get to ride infront of a sun that doesn't move in the first place?
Her hand shot up and she got set to ask when the Professor told them to look at something...Oooooooooooo....
Lex's hand lowered slowly as her attention was grabbed by the wonder in the night sky. She stared up at it in awe, captivated by...by everything really. "Wow...." That was all she could bring herself to say as she looked up. This definitely made not falling asleep worth it.
