Default Potions Laboratory

The Potions Laboratory

Sixteen tables are set up with two stands and burners that adjust to fit your cauldron no matter what size it may be. This is where students can practice brewing any potions they may wish to brew. Along the walls are shelves with every piece of equipment a potioneer would want, flasks, funnels, phials, stirring rods, etc... A closet nearby was filled with many items that students may find useful, extra cauldrons, extra textbooks, extra dragon hide gloves, protective goggles and protective coverobes.

On the board at the front of the room is written in white chalk:

Rules:

  • Clean up your own mess. I am your professor, not your mother.
  • Be safe. I don't want to have to explain why there is a stirrer lodged in your eye when we have plenty of protective goggles to go around. If you do not know what you are doing, stop and check your work. Please refrain from causing any explosions or fires. As I already said, I am not your mother, I will not clean up after you.
  • Be sure you succeed in your potion making. If you waste my ingredients I will charge your parents for them.
  • Do NOT, under any circumstance, test your potions on school mates... no matter which house they are from!
  • Do not bother me. I am a busy professor, I will come to you if I think you are experiencing problems.
ooc: THIS IS NOT A CLASS. This thread is just for roleplaying and having fun. It will remain open all term long. Please remember that even though Professor Lafay is not a very nice person, I am. Feel free to PM me with any questions and any problems that you may have. As my predecessor did, if your character is addressing the professor in this lab, please put PROFESSOR LAFAY in the subject line of your post. This will facilitate my response to you.

Truth be told, Gwendolyn was still sort of unsure about how this would work out. Despite of all the possibilities for this potion to go wrong, the fourth year made up her mind and decided she should at least give it a try. As soon as she entered the Potions Laboratory, her eyes started scanning the place. Good. No other students would be there to notice anything if she’d fail something. So… guess she could start brewing the potion?

She picked a random place and immediately started arranging the cauldron and gathering the ingredients she needed. Gwendolyn realized it only now, but she really missed this place. The laboratory was one of her favourite places at Hogwarts. Especially now, when things started getting hectic around, potions seemed to be the perfect thing to distract her. ‘Scourgify!’, the Ravenclaw pointed the wand at the cauldron. The ingredients now…, she told herself and her eyes started scanning the labeled phials and jars that she had already placed near the cauldron. Syrup of Hellebore … Powdered Moonstone… Daisy Roots … Good. Ready to start.

As the cauldron needed to be preheated, the fourth year cast an 'Incendio' on it and started waiting. 30 minutes. In the meantime, she grabbed the book she had brought with her and started reading about the potion. Her eyes just moved as she read the lines rapidly, but when coming across a sentence, she just stopped. ’If not done correctly and precisely, this potion will calm someone so much, that they will be put into an irreversible sleep.’ Well there you go- it was now clear how she didn’t think straight as she picked this. You can do it… You just need to be careful…, the fourth year kept telling herself as she glimpsed back at the cauldron for a moment, and then returned to her book.

As she only had a few more minutes to wait, the girl decided upon preparing the ingredients just like she was supposed to, before adding them to the cauldron. With quick moves, the Ravenclaw chopped a few daisy roots, which she then left close enough to the cauldron to be able to add them immediately after putting in the water.

However, as she added the roots, Gwendolyn stared blankly at the cauldron. Something was wrong. She added the wrong amount of daisy roots. Either that, or she forgot something else. But there was something wrong. Even if it may have been only her fear of screwing things up, the fourth year decided this was not the day to blow up Lafay’s lab. Instead of going on with the potion like she was definitely sure she had followed the steps correctly until now, the Ravenclaw emptied the cauldron, cleaned it for the second time and preheated it again.

She stopped for a second, placing her cold hands on her face. This was not going very well… Maybe giving this up was an alternative? Perhaps she should have picked something easier? Since when did she start worrying so much? It was POTIONS. If she couldn’t do this, she couldn’t do anything right. After the thirty minutes had passed, Gwendolyn added 3 cups of water to the cauldron, and then carefully chopped only two daisy roots, which she eventually dropped in the potion as well. So far so good.

The next step was stirring. Pfffft. This was what she found hardest about potions. She sometimes confused left with right. Paying extra attention to this, the fourth year stirred 2 times clockwise, then 5 times counter-clockwise. After doing this, she looked at the instructions listed in the book. Just to make sure she had memorized them correctly. 'Add 2 ounces of powdered moonstone.' As she did so, the fourth year tried to keep her hands steady.

Minerva walked into the lab. It was very quiet. She knew it was usually pretty empty, but today seemed extra quiet. Could it because everything going on around the school? She knew there were rumors going around that Lafay could be the reason, but would Lafay really go that far. Minerva shuddered at the thought she always liked her potions professor even though she was terrified of her on most days and extra terrified lately after her two run ins.
She moved to a workstation and opened the book looking around to find the potion she already knew pretty well, but wanted it out so she wouldn't miss a single thing. Once she found it she looked through the ingredients.
SPOILER!!:
Calming Draught

Use/Effect:
To calm and soothe the drinker

Ingredients:
1 pint water
6 drops fluxweed oil
Inner membrane and fluid from 3 bloodroot stems

Instructions:
Add 6 drops fluxweed oil to warm water.
Split the bloodroot stems lengthwise with your knives and scrape out all fluid and fibrous material from inside the stems. Crush with mortar and pestle into a fine paste and add to the cauldron.
Stir slowly until a light steam rises from the cauldron, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise stirring.

Minerva turned and went to the cabinet that all the ingredients and materials were. She pulled out the fluxweed and then the bloodroot stem. Heading back to her work station she pulled out her cauldron from her bag and the tools she would be needing. Pulling her wand she pointed at the materials ‘Scourgify!’ wanting to make sure she had them all clean.
Minerva then looked through her notes and decided it was time to begin. She pointed her wand "Aguamenti" and water poured into the cauldron. Once she felt that it was a pint of water she stopped the water coming from her wand and set her wand aside. Next she put got the dropper and filled it with the fluxweed oil. Putting it over her cauldron she dropped the oil in, "1..2..3..4..5..6" She said to herself to make sure she got the correct amount. Putting the lid back on the fluxweed and setting it aside she grabbed the bloodroot stem.

…………….....

After she had added the 2 ounces of powdered moonstone to the cauldron, the fourth year started feeling a bit more confident. So far, the potion seemed to be just fine. Well… at least Gwen thought so. But there was nothing suspicious about the appearance of the liquid. Looked just fine. Immediately after finishing the previous step, the Ravenclaw stirred three times counter-clockwise, and then simply left it to simmer for seven minutes. During this time, the girl wrote down a few things on her piece of parchment.

Scribble. Scribble. Scribble.

As soon as she finished writing a few observations, the Ravenclaw glimpsed back at the cauldron, paying attention for the seven minutes not to pass without her noticing. But there was enough time still left. As she scribbled a few more words on the piece of parchment, the fourth year heard the door swing open. She raised her eyes and looked in the direction where the noise could have been heard. She wasn’t particularly interested in who it was, but she only wanted to make sure if it wasn’t Professor Lafay. ‘Hi’, the Ravenclaw said as she noticed another student walking towards one of the tables.

That’s it. Enough talking. Gwendolyn drew her attention back to her potion. Pam pam pam… where is the syrup of hellebore?, she asked herself and started scanning through the jars and phials which lay on the table. Once she found what she was looking for, the girl added 2 drops of the liquid to her cauldron. What was still left to do- allow to simmer for two minutes.

Gwen looked at the potion, and noticed the silver vapor it gave off. Just like it is supposed to…, the fourth year observed. Did that mean… she managed to brew the potion correctly? Yes! She scribbled something on the piece of parchment, in order to label the phial she had prepared for her potion.

Quote:
Gwendolyn Greene
Ravenclaw // fourth year
The Draught of Peace
Once the potion cooled down, Gwen moved it in the phial and then drew her attention to the cauldron. After using the cleaning spell on it, the girl finished writing down a few observations on the piece of parchment. There. She was all done.

Ahh, the potions lab. One of the few places in the school that Sierra could escape to that was pretty much idiot-free. Nobody really talked in here, since they were usually working, so Sierra usually had all the time in the world to head to her favorite work station and quietly work on things. She'd been working on a memory potion since first year, and now, for personal reasons, she'd really set her mind on finishing it.

Sliding into the chair she always sat in, Sierra took out a few supplies then tossed her bag to the ground. Cracking open a book, she read a bit before jotting down a few notes. The missing ingredient had to be in here somewhere...

Alex was normally not one to hang around the dungeons any longer than was absolutely necessary, but as he'd been heading back to his dorm after potions, he'd noticed his sister slip in to the potions lab. He had been trying to find a time to talk to her, but all his school plus this whole quidditch thing he had going on left him little time to track her down. One of the few drawbacks of being in different houses. Sigh.

He entered the room and looked around--there weren't many people around so it was safe to pursue a conversation with her. He hitched his satchel on his shoulder to a more comfortable position and walked up to her, hoping she wasn't working on anything TOO important and could spare a quick convo with her brother.

"Umm...hey," he said with a smile as he approached her. He peered at the book she had opened and raised an eyebrow. "Whatcha workin' on?"

Cancel that.

The lab was no longer idiot-free. Apparently, the Puffers had decided to invade her haven. She sighed, yet continued reading until she reached the end of the paragraph she was working on. Closing the book, she looked up and met the eye of Alex, her brother she'd been distanced from for the past four or five years.

...and oddly enough, she didn't mind seeing him.

"Hey, Alex," she said, and then she lifted her right foot and kicked out a chair, nodding for him to take a seat. Maybe maturity had gotten the best of her, or maybe...just maybe, she was in a really good mood all thanks to a certain someone she had her eye on.

"A memory potion," she answered. "It targets Amnesia and Alzheimers, though. I'm actually developing it myself, but...I'm still missing a few ingredients." She shrugged. "I don't know. I may have to ask my mom for help in the end, but...I'm sort of trying to do this on my own."

My mom. Alex nearly shuddered but stopped himself. SHE wasn't their mum, and she never could replace Bella, at least not for him--sure, she'd made a few mistakes, one of which resulted in her twins having different fathers (a fact that still made Alex's head spin) but still, SHE was the woman who had given birth to them, not this other woman. Whatever, Alex was just going to have to learn to accept that Sierra was obviously way more connected with their father's new wife than he was and would ever be, no need to argue it with her and just cause a row.

He smiled and took a seat next to her. "Ahh, sounds interesting...are you thinking of going in to potions? Like Anna?" he asked. It wouldn't surprise him, despite their obvious personality differences, she seemed to be following their sister's footsteps to a T - prefect, top points earner, Quidditch player...which brought him to his next bit.

"So, um, I dunno if you saw the game but...I'm on the Quidditch team now," he said with a smile, unable to keep his pride from showing.

Sierra glanced up at Alex, who still hadn't taken a seat. He looked to be thinking something over in his mind, but she couldn't really begin to imagine what. She mentally shrugged it off, though and began flipping through the little potions journal she'd brought with her.

As it opened a loose piece of parchment automatically fell onto the table, which Sierra immediately scooped up. It was the notes she and Treyen had compiled--together. She planned to steal it from him in the end, though, which would be why she suddenly dipped her quill in ink and scratched out the word 'friend'. She couldn't have that there if she planned to steal something from the boy. Err, man now.

"No," she answered, putting down her quill. "I mean, it's always a possibility, but I've got my eye on my something else instead." She was going to be a pro Quidditch player. A star. She'd only use the subjects she was good at to fall back on if she needed to. "Besides, I'll get to work on Potions lots at home." She turned around and looked for Lafay, but not seeing her anywhere nearby, she added, "My mom's going to have her own Potions lab at home soon. She just doesn't know it yet." It was going to be a gift from her father.

"I heard," she nonchalantly said. What? He didn't think she kept careful track of the other teams? "So how'd you get into that? Flying and Quidditch, I mean." He used to be so scared.

Hearing that all-too-familiar voice, Sierra looked up and grinned. Of course she was behaving. Didn't she always behave around Puffers? Smirk. "No harm done here," she said, gesturing toward Alex. "See. He's still alive." Another smirk. "Oh, ...I want you to look at this when you have the chance," she said, holding up the parchment of the potion she'd invented with Treyen. "I think it's done. Or...at least already planned. I haven't exactly tried to brew it yet."

Witsy needed an answer for her recent howler and after many a walks it wasn't until she heard some 3rd years talking about practicing in the potion lab that gave her an idea. She would make a potion that she could send home and hopefully would help. She was well aware of the rules, but the professor said students, nothing about home and that's if she can get it out. Witsy was out of ideas and this was her only solution.

Drought of Peace. This would help her sister. She was standing in the doorway of the potions room. Some of the tables were occupied, and she walked over to the one closer towards the back. She laid down her stuff and took a piece of paper of instruction out of her bag. She set it on the table. I need powdered moonstone, syrup of hellebore, powdered porcupine quills, Valerian root, and powdered unicorn horn. She walked over to the shelves and grabbed the ingredients. While she was there she picked up a book as well making sure she didn't mess up the potion. She made it back to her table ingredients and all. She flipped open the book. Witsy began reading the instructions over and took a deep breath.

This was a potion for 5th years and she was only a 4th. Not only that but this was also very difficult. There was only one good thing to this. If the potion was made right it would turn silver. She started to heat her cauldron and skimmed through the first instruction. She tied her hair back.

First She added powdered moonstone, powdered porcupine quills, Valerian root, and then powdered unicorn horn. She began to stir 7 times clockwise and then counter-clockwise. This wasn't looking too great. Witsy lowered the flame and rechecked her notes and then the book's. Something didn't seem right.

Putting his potions kit together, as well as some of the texts he'd stolen gotten from deeper parts of the library, Dylan headed off to the Potion's Laboratory. He'd still been thinking about that seminar with that blonde lady about Alchemy. It had fascinated him...and made the Slytherin want to get further involved with the potions-side...

Like that guy that had lived 1000 years or whatever. He'd created an elixir due to this alchemy business. Dylan's interest was peaked!

Entering the laboratory, he set off to a table by himself, not really looking around too much...or trying to socialize. He'd been getting a lot of attention lately because of the stuff happening with the Quidditch team...and for now, he couldn't be bothered. That was for the pitch, anyway.

Opening Distilling Knowledge: Alchemy, Chemistry, and the Scientific Revolution , he continued to scan where he'd left off the night before. Yes, the book was muggle...but who was to say they couldn't' learn something from muggle chemistry? In fact, perhaps there was some way one could combine the two...

Laying the book to the side for a moment, he removed his notebook from the satchel...opening it to his notes page. Jotting "Periodic Table" down, he moved to pick the book back up...

*continues to read*

Sierra glanced at Lafay a split second longer and then, deciding the woman was likely busy and just wasn't able to do one-on-one's at the moment, went back to glancing at the parchment in her hands. Having Treyen here would be beneficial, she had to admit, but getting the glory of making this work all on her own was too good an opportunity to pass up. She wasn't even worried about necessarily helping the Muggles anymore. She just wanted to accomplish creating a potion all on her own and successfully brewing it.

On that note, she laid down her parchment and began taking out her brewing materials.

Laying the book to the side for a moment, he removed his notebook from the satchel...opening it to his notes page. Jotting "Periodic Table" down, he moved to pick the book back up...

*continues to read*

As she did this, she happened to glance over and see Dylan sitting and reading some book. Hmm. She hadn't pinned him as the potions type, but then again, who knew what he was up to. He looked like he didn't want to be bothered, though, so she looked away and continued getting out her materials.

Or...at least already planned. I haven't exactly tried to brew it yet."
"Just brew it... if you waste my ingredients, I know who your father is." She said and winked at the girl.

Amused at the comment, Sierra smirked then began cleaning all the equipment she was going to use. Then she moved about the place collecting the ingredients she'd need. To be honest, it'd actually be amusing to watch what would happen if she wasted some of the ingredients...

Once that was done and she was all set up, she pointed her wand into her cauldron. "Aguamenti!" she said. She let the water fill up to the amount needed and then ended the charm. She adjusted her wand to where it was pointing below the cauldron and said, "Incendio!"
