Glenn took one of a piece of bread from the bread dish before passing it on. She ate it slowly, paying special attention to chewing with her mouth closed. As to the next question, she had no idea, just like all the other ones. Her family's version of a night out was dinner at the local pub, with hot chips and fish bites that you were free to eat with your fingers.

She nervously brushed the crumbs off of her dress and listened intently to everyone's answers. Glenn wanted to write them all down in her journal that contained all the other spells and notes from every other class she had had since first year but she doubted that doing so would be particularly good etiquette.

Aurora took a bruschetta and placed it on her bread dish. Yum yum yum Italian food!!! It always reminded her of her father... She raised her hand to answer the question. "Professor, the food is served from the right and the dishes are taken from the left." she said. At least, she hoped she was right... she sometimes struggled with her left and right...

Gustav had his best suit on as he waited for the food to be passed on. The students looked simply elegant and it was quite a sight to see the girls looked really beautiful with their dresses. His face redden when an older girl caught him staring at her. He turned away quickly to avoid eye contact and continued looking downwards for awhile.

Gustav thought he didn't notice how food was being served because they always appear magically on the table from the kitchens to the dining area without people serving by you unless you called for them,it was also the same back home. But he had dining etiquette and didn't much learn anything else other than that. He wondered what other ways of how dinner was served in the muggle world.

Perhaps the idea of a seven course meal is interesting, but isn’t it a bit much?, Gwendolyn thought as the took a bruschetta. Then, while listening to the Professor talk, the Ravenclaw tried thinking of the answer. It has to be left or right… but which one is it…? ‘I think the food is served from the right side and it is taken from the left’ Seems legit.

So maybe this class isn't soooo bad, the third year tried convincing herself as she waited for the next question to be asked.

Gemma smiled as the students' hands shot up in the air. It was nice to see so many of them know a few of courses. And of course, they all knew the best course, dessert..."You are all correct and have covered quite a few of the courses..." she said with a flick of her wand. Instantly, a list of the seven courses appeared on the screens.

1. Appetizers
2. Soup
3. Salad
4. Sorbet to clear the palette
5. Pasta, Fish or Poultry Dish
6. Red Meat, Fish, or Poultry with Vegetables
7. DESSERT!!!!

She smiled at the students, "If you haven't already, please grab your napkin and place it in your lap. It should stay there for the remainder of our meal and should be used occasionally to wipe your mouth."

With a flick of her wand menus dropped from the ceiling and landed in their laps. "We are going to begin our seven course meal. As we go along, I'll introduce you to some different rules of etiquette when eating. Feel free to ask any questions that you think of. "

"Please glance over the menu..."she said excitedly and then once she felt like they had all had ample time to preview the menu, she flicked her wand and the menus flew away. "Okay let's get things started..."

She flicked her wand in a circular motion and the appetizer flew into the room and levitated above each of the tables. "Can anyone tell me what the proper direction we should pass the tray of brushetta around the table is?"

OOC: Remember to raise your hand before you answer. .And as always remember she is always watching you! But remember she doesn't handle rudeness towards Muggle ways very well, so you might want to keep those prejudices to yourself unless you want face the consequences! Remember we haven't started eating yet....We will soon though!

SPOILER!!: YES YES YES!!!

"Thank you! You are all correct!!!" she said with a tilt of her head towards the right. Instantly a diagram popped up on the screen showing an arrow going around a round table and then an arrow going around a square/rectangle table. "You pass the food to the left going in a clockwise direction...if you were sitting at the table with the host, you would let the host start the food...but since we are all here learning together we don't have an official host, so the plate will just start with a random student..." with that the plates of bruschetta levitated to one person at the table and waited for it to be grabbed. "Please just grab one bruschetta off the plate. The plates have been charmed not to fall" she added before someone got nervous about that. "Because the bruschetta is a bread you may eat it with your hands....and place it on your bread dish..."

She flicked her wand and the menu appeared on the screens again and the appetizer was crossed out on the list. "Okay now onto to our next course...and no worries about not being able to finish all of the courses. Each course isn't a huge serving but just enough...." she said moving her wand to signal the cups of soup to come in. Each one flew in and levitated above the tables. "Now before we get our next course I just want to remind you of some common rules that apply in any eating setting...." she said with her sweet smile.

"Number One...never talk with food in your mouth...Number Two....Do not put your elbows on the table. This is rude and can knock items off the table...Number Three...Don't blow on your food, just let it cool down while you have conversations with other guests...and Number Four...If you ever get something that you don't like. It is always customary to take atleast one bite to try it out....unless you are allergic and then you just don't touch it...." yes those were some simple and good ones to start with.

"So before the soup is delivered, can anyone tell me from which side the food will be served to you? And when you done with a course, which side the dish will be removed from?" she asked hoping her question made sense.

OOC: Remember to raise your hand before you answer. .And as always remember she is always watching you! But remember she doesn't handle rudeness towards Muggle ways very well, so you might want to keep those prejudices to yourself unless you want face the consequences! Try the bread!!!!

Taking a bite from her bruschetta, Thea listened to everyone's answers. Jiggling her feet slightly, she chewed carefully. Mm. This was brilliant! She would have to remember some of these things to recommend to her Mother.
As she swallowed her last piece, she grabbed her napkin and dabbed her mouth, just in case.

'It's served from the right?..' Her head was cocked to the right as she asked this. This was actually harder than Thea had thought it was..

Nathan really did not have a clue on this latest question. What did it mattter the side your food is served from. Nathan raised his hand and hand and responded, "I honestly do not know. I hear many people saying from the right and taken from the left but what does it really matter. Is there a functional purpose to which way your dish is served?".

laurange 01-15-2012 12:54 PM

Elise smiled, receiving the plate with her right hand and taking a bruschetta off it. Placing it on her bread plate, she passed the dish to the next person before tuning back towards Professor Cerulean.

Nodding, she took the notes mentally, processing the sounds into pictures. Got it. Raising her hand, Elise beamed. "The food is served on the right and cleared on the left. It's just going with the clockwise motion."

Smiling, she took a small bite of the brushetta. Nice. It was actually almost exactly the way Elise's mom used to make it. So, that almost made El cry, but she stopped herself. It wasn't good etiquette to cry anywhere. It was showing weakness, and weakness was something her father would not stand for.

Jez bit her lip, playing with the hem of her dress. She knew the answers to most of these questions - Merlin's beard, they'd been drilled into her since the moment she'd been old enough to sit at the table properly. Her parents would be turning in their graves if they knew she wasn't answering. But she'd kept quiet for most of the lesson. Let's stop that right here.
Jez raised her hand, not in her usual 'I know the answer!' quick way, but hesitantly. "The dishes are served from the right and taken from the left," she said clearly. "Basically a clockwise rotation." She took a piece of brushetta, carefully biting into it to try and avoid spilling everything. That would be undignified, and Jez was nervous as it was without adding humiliation to that.

Raven read the menu of today. Wow, all of them sounded delicious! And Thank Merlin they didn't served vegetable salad or otherwise she didn't want to eat them.

She took a bruschetta and placed it into her bread plate. Well, there was a tomato on the top and she was not a fan of tomato. Then she tried to eat it, took a bite of bruschetta carefully.

"Wow, it was great." she murmured. Oh, another question. Raven raised her hand and answer.

"The food is served on the right and cleaned it on the left." she said. Argh, she didn't feel comfortable without her glasses.

Vlimia was excited, to say the least. She had never had Muggle food except for at the Muggle Matinee Theatre! Vlim took a bruschetta and ate it carefully. She couldn't mess up the dinner when they were only on the appetizers! While chewing (with her mouth CLOSED), she thought about bruschetta. What a fun thing to say. Bruschetta! Bruschetta! It could almost be a name! Af course, all this immaturity took place in her head. When she finished the yummy appetizer, Vlim brushed her hands on the napkin that was on her lap. Just in case.

Glad that he and so many other students had gotten the last question right, he watched as the plate of brushetta appeared above their table and someone began to pass it his way. He took the plate with his right hand, removed a piece of the bread with his left hand, and then passed it to the person next to him.

He took a small bite of the brushetta, his teeth easily making it through the crunchy bread. "Yum! This is really good." he said in a hushed voice to the other kids at his table, for Professor Cerulean was starting again.

So now was the soup. August eyed the floating bowls of hot soup that floated over their heads nervously but as he did so he answered her question with a raise of his hand. "Professor, the waiter's or servers will always deliver your food on your right and then when you finish it will be removed from your left side."

Now please don't spill soup on me!

As the rest of the students took a turn to speak, Eino continued to nibble of his fancy looking bread.

Opposite of when we pass things around the table?" Or was it the same? All this was really overwhelming for Kurumi who had grown up living a very simple life style in the nonmagical world.

"Great point Kurumi!" she paused and walked a little bit closer to her table to answer her question, "Your waiter or waitress will be trained to avoid your water when they serve you from the right. Most of the time they have set up the table and have set it up with enough room for them to place the plates without causing a spill...however, it's always a good idea to lean just a little bit out of their way when they are serving or taking the plates away just to help them out...."

Fascinating.

The brushetta looked really yummy too. Now for the soup, "Professor" he raised his hand to answer "People get served from the right" right? "And the food is taken from you, from the left side" maybe.

She sure did ask alot of questions huh? After finishing her bread completely, Her hand went up AGAIN! "The proper way of serving the food would be from the right and if that's the way you serve it's obviously oppisite when it comes to collecting the empty plate,"

She simply gave a nod to the Proffesers rules, it wasn't like she was going to anything on her set of rules! Well except the tomato thing! SHIVERS! But she'd have to eat it now huh?

Obviously the person had no class at all.

Sky raised her hand and added her voice to the correct answers. "If you really think about it, it's obvious. The food is served from your right and removed from your left, to keep up with the idea of going clockwise. I believe if the food is served from your left, then it would be going counterclockwise," she explained, sounding slightly snooty about it.

She then took a delicate bite of the brushetta. Yum, it tasted delicious!

Adam raised his hand. "Isn't it served on your right?" At least from what he remembered of being out in a fancy restarunt he thought he leaned to the left so the waiter could serve on the right. But he couldn't remember which said the dish would be taken away.

"The food is served on the right, and the dish will be removed from the left?" She suggested when she raised her hand. Well, if it wasn't it, it had to be the other way around.

At least the menu didn't look to be French, which helped her keep her thoughts seperate from memories of Beauxbatons. That kept her comfortable, and she delicately selected a piece of bruschetta as the plate was passed to her, then passed it on. Taking a small bite, she placed the rest on her bread plate and turned her attention back to Professor Cerulean as the discussion moved to the next course.

She sent a glance toward the student who had asked if they could dip their bread into their soup, though. Obviously they'd never gone to a formal dinner. She assumed the professor would correct them, though, and raised her hand along with the others as the next question was posed. "Dishes after the appetizer course are passed the opposite to the first course. That is, they are passed from left to right, enabling the server to replace the empty dish from the appetizers with the next course easily, and keeping things organized and moving smoothly," she answered, before lowering her hand and taking another bite of her bruschetta before the soup arrived.

Granted, Cerulean's servings seem to be small...so...he could at least try them, without finishing them, which she said was totally okay. As long as he took a bite or something.

He took one bruschetta and placed it on the bread dish, before passing it along.

Oh, another question. Hand raised. "The food is served from the left, which means it's removed from the right." Sort of like they were doing, no? Because they were passing that bread stuff to the left of each of them. So, basically, the food is served on one side and then the plate would be removed from the other side. Easy.

Merlin, she didn't even know how to wear those kind of shoes properly, she was only used to converse shoes. And because of that, the moment that food was served on their tables, it triggered her hunger.

And now, she was very hungry indeed. As questions came from left to right, she did not even bother opening her mouth since she already knew the stuff, she allowed the others to give out their ideas. Besides, if she opened her mouth, it'll just water at the mere sight of the Bruschetta bread. She would pounce on it if she had the chance. Hence, her delight when finally..Professor Cerulean said that they could try eating the bread now. Of course, she followed the proper rules of etiquette as she did.

When another question was brought up, she slowly chewed on the bread and listened to her classmates as they gave out answers. Most of them had it, she thought. Then she drank water as she nodded.

And they never went to many restaurants, so she really had no idea.

When the Bruschetta came to Ellie, she eyed it before taking a piece and setting it on her bread plate. She looked up at Amelia next to her and pursed her lips. Mia knew that Ellie hadn't had much luck with keeping her food down recently. But Professor Cerulean just said that it was proper to at least take a bite of everything. So, Ellie took a small nibble. Hopefully, it wouldn't be too bad by the end of the lesson.

"Professor, the server will always serve our food from our left side, and when we are done with our food, the dishes are removed from our right side. So it is always polite to move a little to the side when the server is serving or removing, so that you are not in their way."

As the soup came out, though, something popped into Nate's head, and he had to ask before he messed something up. "Professor, is it still--allowed, per say, to dip our bread in the soup?" So long as it was his own soup and not Pam's or some of the other students' then it seemed like it was fine.

Vickers took a piece of bruschetta and lay it on his bread plate before passing it to the student next to him. He listened quietly when the Professor went over the general rules of etiquette. It was like it was back home again, except the Professor says the rules much nicer than his grandmother ever did.

He raised his hand again on the next question "Food is usually served on our right, whether its by servers or passing it along on a long dining table. When the diner is done or there is reason to take the food away mid-meal servers clear the dishes from the left side of the diner."

It didn't seem too complicated, there were quite a few similaries between this and what she knew already. Though she had to admit that she hadn't been to that many parties that required this type of eating.

She raised her hand at the question. "You would get served on your right, and your food taken from you on your left." It worked going by the whole idea of your food moving clockwise.

The young professor's face was excited about all of the right answers. "Yes the waiter would serve you from the right side and take your plate from the left side...so always try to lean away just a little bit so that it makes it easier for the waiter to reach your serving setting..." she flicked her wand and the cups of minestrone levitated down to their right shoulders and then levitated to the serving plate. "You need to use the soup spoon..." she held up the spoon from the right side of her plate and all of the soup spoons on the table rose up slightly. "to eat your soup."

She gave them a little bit of time to eat their soup, and for her to eat her soup, and when it seemed like a majority of them were done she flicked her wand and the next course, the salad, in little glasses, flew in from a side door and levitated on the side of the room.

"Okay let's go on to our next course, our fruit salad. It has strawberries, pineapple, melons, blueberries, peaches, and watermelons diced up very small." She flicked her wand and the soup cups were removed from the table on the students' left side and instantly the glasses of fruit salad levitated around the students' right side and landed. "Make sure you use your salad fork" she said holding up the little fork causing all of these forks to raise up a little bit, "for the salad course."

As the students began to eat, she decided it was time to pose the next question, "Can anyone tell me what you do with your silverware after you have used it....not at the end of the meal but...for instance, after you butter a piece of bread, what do you do with your butter knife?

OOC: Remember to raise your hand before you answer. .And as always remember she is always watching you! But remember she doesn't handle rudeness towards Muggle ways very well, so you might want to keep those prejudices to yourself unless you want face the consequences! Try the soup and the salad...yummy...feel free to have LIGHT conversation at your table....but don't get carried away...

He was on a roll! It seemed to have payed off that his mother had wanted them to be as fancy as they could afford even at dinner with just his small family.

Auggie watched excitedly as the soup landed infront of him. This, by far was already his favorite lesson of the term. They got to eat like crazy! And there were still plenty of other courses to come. Auggie watched as the soup spoon rose up in its place to the right of his plate and he retrieved it and began to eat the soup. It was really good too. "Excuse me, Professor did you make this food or was it the House Elves? I only ask because it's really great."

After the soup course was finished, Auggie had left some of it in the bowl because he didn't want to fill up too much, he was ready for the fruit salad. He quickly picked up his salad fork and then listened to the Professor's question, he raised his hand again and answered. "Aren't you supposed to leave them with the plate, cup, or bowl so the waiters can take it with them? Besides you have all the other utensils you need still on the table." he said with a nod.

Yummmy. This fruit salad was very yummy. Indy had never really had a fruit salad when she was eating before, so this really was a new experience. The strawberries were her favorite, but then they were her favorite fruit, so that was bound to be really. Indy thought about the question as she ate her fruit. She kind of had an idea, especially considering that the layout of the tablet. Mmm. Indy nodded her head, before raising her hand. "Would you put the knife, and any of the other cutlery that's been used onto the side plate, or saucer." Sounded pretty good.

Raven saw the... She forgot the name, but it was a strange name for a soup. Well, it looked not to delightful, but she decided to try it.

Mmmmm.... Not too bad, but cream soup was still the best she tought. After she finished with the strange-name soup, she noticed to the salad.

A FRUIT SALAD!! She really loved fruit salad! With her salad fork, she ate it. YUMMY!!! She tought. The fruit salad was the best that she've ever had. Wow!!

And the question... She didn't have any idea about that and continue ate her salad.

Elise beamed, although she'd known she was correct all along. Leaning to her left just slightly, she allowed the soup to seat itself in front of her. Nodding at Professor Cerulean, she picked up her soup spoon.

Spooning the delicousness, she sipped from the side of the spoon as she was taught to do much earlier. She continued sipping her soup, tilting her bowl just slightly way from her until it was finished. She barely had the time to register that most of them were done already. Leaning towards her right, she smiled as the bowl flew away.

Leaning left again, she allowed the cups of Fruit Salad land in front of her and paid very close attention to what was in it. After she was sure that she wasn't allergic to any of the fruits in the cup, she took her salad fork and delicately speared a piece of melon.

Hearing the question, Elise swallowed before raising her hand. "I believe you put them on your plate, handle facing to the right with the knife above the fork. That would indicate that you are not yet finished with your meal. Putting them diagonally, with the handle on the bottom right would indicate that you are finished with the meal."

Lowering her hand, she proceeded to spear a piece of pineapple. Chewing delicately, she smiled at the slight sourness of the pineapple. It was the perfect balance between sour and sweet and was really amazing.

Starbreeze 01-15-2012 05:27 PM

The fruit salad looked delicious, but Eino almost felt bad about eating it. It looked like it had been very craftily sculptured into the glass, and eating would destroy it. Nonetheless, Eino picked up the appropriate fork (after checking around to see which one that was) and dug in when they were allowed to eat. The fruit was fresh, cool, and sweet! It felt like he was eating ice-sugar cubes. After taking one last bite, Eino put his fork down, but he was not done yet! He turned his attention to Professor Cerulean and listened to her question. He raised his hand and spoke when he was allowed to. "I believe that after you've used the silverware you place it, very neatly, might I add, on top of your plate." At least, that was always what he did.

Bazinga 01-15-2012 05:31 PM

Minerva looked at the soup and salad it looks so good. She was about to try them when another question was asked. She put up her hand. "Well professor I think you put the silverware on your plate until you are completely finished." Then she went back to trying the next to items on the menu. They were so good. This was turning out to be a great lesson.

Whatever that delicious first thing was. Soup. Salad. It was already enough for Nora's stomach. How was she going to make it through all the other remaining courses? Uhm... maybe she could sneak a 'Scourgify' when no one was looking? Not really... she didn't want to get caught and get into trouble. Well, she'll only have to wait and see what was next.

"You place it neatly on the plate?" The girl said hesitantly, with a hand raised. Or maybe it should be placed back next to the plate? Hmm.

StarShine 01-15-2012 05:54 PM

So far so good, João was truly impressed with this class. It was enjoyable even to his standards who was accustomed to the very best of meals because of his parents' job. He had just focused on eating and let the others answer the questions, unwilling to cut off his pleasure of eating. Though, when the soup came, he examined it one second, tried his best not to show his disgust at the sight of it and tried one spoon just to be polite, before putting the spoon neatly back next to his plate.

And then came the fruit salad, luckily fast, and he ate that happily. Now though, he supposed he should answer a few questions or else he would just eat and have done nothing to earn some points.

Raising his hand, he said "You place them neatly on the plate so that they don't leave a spot on the table." Made sense, right?

Enigma 01-15-2012 06:02 PM

Ira wished she could just focus on eating the delicious meal, rather than answering questions about Dinner etiquette! She had not yet gotten over her fascination and awe at the grandeur of the room! She really didn't want to answer questions!

So she decided to keep quiet and let others do the answering part.. Well, for now, she had more important things to do.. like eating!

ballantd 01-15-2012 06:33 PM

Melanie looked over at the utensils. She was pretty sure she knew the answer to this, so she restrained herself from eating for a moment and raised her hand.

"I believe you place the knife on your plate, handle facing the right, so the dirtied part is over the plate."

Melanie was thrilled that she could finally excel in something. She felt so out of place in this new, magic world, but Muggle Studies? She could do this!

keepmeclose22 01-15-2012 06:47 PM

Pam smiled as the salad came out. She loved fruit, especially pineapple. As she picked up the small fork, she began eating her salad. Each bite was like nothing she had ever tasted. She liked being able to have something extrodinary to eat. Even if it was just fruit salad.

As she was enjoying her salad, the professor asked a question. Thinking for a moment she raised her hand. "Professor, don't you place it on your plate? Off to the side, so you don't bump into anyone?" She wasn't 100% sure it was correct, but then again, not many people did.

Orla 01-15-2012 07:15 PM

The fruit salad looked delightfull, LuLu couldn't wait to get her hands on it, she put her fork into it and ate it and listened closely to the proffesers words, she was getting good at this fancy dinner junk! Once she was done her hand raised up into the air

''If you are finished your meal completely, you usually place your knife and fork, and any other utensil you are using neatly on the plate in the 12 o-clock position, It is considered quite rude if you don't do so,''
