The Milky Way Galaxy contains anywhere between 200 and 400 billion stars. A tiny fraction of those can be viewed right here, in the Hogwarts Observatory. This circular room was locked for a long time, but Professor Antares opened it again when he became a staff member at Hogwarts and now after his leave Professor Roslund maintains it - complete with a huge telescope that was a new addition then. As it is difficult to operate, students need permission from the professor before they are allowed to use it, but a number of smaller telescopes that anyone and everyone is free to use are stowed away in cupboards lining the rounded walls along with empty potion vials and other astronomy items and supplies.
Large star charts are pinned up on the walls as well. Not all of these belong to the school. Those that do not have a great number of notes and calculations added to them - although Professor Roslund is a teacher now, he is still able to supply colleagues and his mentor with data and measurements. You are, of course, free to study his charts, but make very sure not to remove or misplace anything.
Stargazing, naturally, is an activity best pursued at night, and as such, the Observatory usually remains unlocked. Of course, there are superseding school rules that limit the hour at which students can still be out of bed. If you desire to study the wonders of the cosmos later than that, you need a note from Professor Roslund. Should a student be found without such a note (or, alternatively a creative excuse), he or she can expect... trouble.
In the same way that a library is more than just a building where books are stored, the Observatory is as much a place of scientific inquiry as it is a shrine to the grandeur and beauty of the Universe. Professor Roslund, when he doesn't use the telescope for work, often comes here to think, or for some peace and quiet. Please respect him and any other teacher or student spending his or her time here in this way by not running around or shouting.
Sarah was sort of winded from walking up all those stairs. You'd think she'd be in better shape considering all the sports she played back at home. But no, all those stairs were never in her training. Eek. She didn't even want to think about going back down them.
She had come here for the view. She simply adored heights. While many people had a phobia of high places, Sarah loved them. She liked the wind in her face, the gorgeous view, the feeling of being on top of the world... it was amazing.
She made her way over to the edge and looked over the side. She grinned. It really was a beautiful view. She could just stand there all day...
Eris made her way into the Observatory with an open sense of awe before she realized the room wasn't as entirely empty as she first viewed it to be when the young witch walked in. Recognizing her as a fellow first year from the Great Hall, but the girl looked lost in a thought that Eris wasn't sure she should interrupt.
The urge to look through one of the telescopes to glance at the stars tugged at her heart. Having once a many time throughout her childhood, the young witch with the help of her father had gone stargazing outside their home. Though she knew how to operate the telescopes to an extent, as a first year, Eris was unaware if they were allowed.
The Observatory. Quite possibly Presley's favorite spot in the whole school. Especially when she had something to think about. She didn't today. Not really. Today she just wanted to look at the sky. From the highest point she could. She leaned against the wall, and just stared at the night sky. She felt so small and insignificant surrounded by all of these millions of stars. The universe was so big, and she was smaller that the teeniest speck of dust seen under a microscope in the grand scheme of things.
"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not."
Adam had followed Louisa up the steps to the Observatory somewhat surprised that he wasn't out of breath given the amount of steps they had had to climb to get to the point that they were now. He hadn't been to this part of the castle yet, but he could tell already that he liked it. Plus, on normal circumstances, the Observatory was practically right next door to the Gryffindor common room. That was pretty convenient, wasn't it?
Stepping over to one of the railings that allowed for a clear look out onto the grounds surrounding the Observatory and the beautiful sky Adam couldn't help but smile slightly. "It's incredible, isn't it?" Adam said, the words coming out just barely above the sound of a whisper.

Leading all the way up to the tower Louisa had been focused on her hands holding the ash and trying so hard not to let it fly away...so much. They hadn't really talked only 'from here' and 'now up there' from her for guidance. It was really good that Adam seemed to gather his thoughts about everything. They could talk now without crying, not that she minded that but she didn't want to go back to the common room with puffy eyes- what if the 'he & she' saw her? That'd only make her cry even more.
...why did she have to relate everything back to them? She was going to just FORGET about them. At least for Adam's sake today.
Louisa stood next to him smiling as he did at the view, "It's great. I love it here. Especially when it's snowing." She looked at him sideways, the smile didn't cease, "You like snow, right? We'll come up here and watch it together one day." Yep, she was so emotional today and could say whatever she wanted. Louisa knew that he knew they both were best friends. Only.
"Do you want to do it?" She extended her locked hands to try and give him as much ash as possible to throw away to the wind. It might help him a lot.

Looking out at the vastness of everything in front of him made Adam feel loads better. Really, this incident with his parents was just a small blip on his life line, and really he was better off without them. He turned to look at Louisa when she spoke to him. "I love the snow," he said, returning her smile. "I've always been more of a winter person anyway...maybe it's because I was born in the beginning of December." Adam did love that time of month, when all the muggles put out their holiday decorations, and carolers were out singing cheerful songs. The season brought with it a kind of peace that Adam could never really find in anything else.
Adam turned so that he was facing Louisa, and held out his hands, cupping them under Louisa's. "Maybe if just sort of spill it into my palm it'll work," Adam said with a little smile. Honestly he was impressed that Louisa had managed to salvage so many of the ashes in the first place.

Louisa carved his birthday date into her mind next to... the 'he' one which supposed to be crossed off but something kept it visible. "I love the winter more, too. It's all about staying at school with friends for me." She smiled and started spilling the ash onto his hands. "There's a slight breeze. I think you can just throw them to the opening up there." Yes, it was an extremely far one but the breeze would take them up and away hopefully.

Adam gave Louisa a little smile before she finished pouring the ashes into his hand. Taking a couple of steps back so that the ashes wouldn't by some off chance come down and land back in their faces, Adam tossed them up, the breeze taking them almost instantly, so that the ashes floated all the way to the top, and out the hole of the roof. Adam watched them until they were completely gone before looking back down at Louisa.
"That felt good," Adam said with a little smirk. Finally he could be rid of a negative force in his life, and hopefully, he could move on.

Louisa stepped back along with Adam and tried to make out the small black dots flying and swirling upward to where the hole opened up to the vast sky. She kept gazing at them until they were impossible to be seen, just gone in the biggest vessel of the world called sky. "That's great." She looked back down at him, "D-do you want to go and start unpack the things they sent from home?" He just got his letter so he might, "You need some help?" Unpacking that is.

"Yeah...that would be great. I don't think there's too much in there, but I should probably do it sooner rather than later." The quicker that Adam could be done with the whole thing, the better off he would be. "I left the box in the owlery...I'm not really sure how they managed to figure out how to get it to me, but I guess I'll never know," Adam said with a little shrug. "Shall we go?"

Eris sensed someone behind her and turned around to see a girl in Gryffindor robes, though her voice was so quiet it took Eris a bit to hear her.
"Mmm?" the boy-girl of a witch tilted her head to the side before giving a warm grin, "Hello there!". Being more on the friendly talkative side of the Slytherin family types, Eris always enjoyed meeting people. "I'm Eris....first year."

For some reason, Dallin was nervous. Not the scared nervous, but the stomach-doing-somersaults nervous. You know, the kind that wasn’t so bad. He’d come up here quite a bit earlier than he had asked Ellie to meet him... but he wanted to make sure he was here first. He walked to the place on the tower that was overlooking the grounds – the certain place, he remembered it specifically – and looked at the view for a long moment. Then he sat down, setting his real picnic basket beside him. His stomach made a weird roll and closed his eyes, trying to calm down.
He hoped that this was a good idea, that it wasn’t cheesy. He hoped Ellie wouldn’t laugh at him. He’d been thinking about this for a while and he didn’t want it to go wrong. Although a part of it already had gone wrong, considering he couldn’t get into the kitchens to get real picnic food. It was okay, though. Dallin was good at improvising.
Opening his eyes, he stood up and stared at the entrance to the Observatory. He folded his arms across his chest, leaning back against wall.

Breathe, Ellie.
Why was she so nervous? There were butterflies jumping around in her stomach and she didn't know why. It was a good nervous, though. Like, excited. She had no idea what Dallin had planned for the evening, but she knew without a doubt that she would love whatever it was.
Ellie paused before the entrance of the observatory and straightened her shirt, fixed her hair, and took a deep breath. She turned around the corner to see Dallin looking straight out the doorway where she was. Almost automatically, a grin formed on her lips. It happened every time she saw his face; he just made her happy. Ellie also noticed where exactly he was sitting: the place they had confessed their undying love for each other said they loved each other for the first time.
"Hi." Ellie said, rather quietly for some reason. She made her way over to him, a grin still plastered on her lips.

Seeing Ellie, Dallin grinned almost automatically. It faded to a small smile at her quiet voice. Was she being shy? Maybe she was nervous like him. Which was ridiculous. But... it was okay, though.
"Hey," he said calmly, stepping forward to meet her in a hug as she got to him. He kissed her lightly before pulling away and just holding her by one hand. "Thanks for coming." How formal. That was bad. Dal grimaced slightly, then forced himself to quickly recover. He grinned, motioning to the picnic basket. "Wanna sit?" He led the way over, sitting back against the wall and stretching his feet out on one side of the basket.
Then, with a sheepish grin, he lifted one side of the basket's lid to reveal what was inside. "The feast." There was quite an assortment of candies; from chocolate frogs and sugar quills to Every Flavor Beans and pumpkin pasties. "I had to improvise, you know? What with the kitchen being closed. This is all I could round up." He dug his hand in, lifting a few candies up and dropping them on the closed side of the lid.
Underneath the candy, folded up almost too nicely, was a turquoise blanket. Dallin stared at it before glancing at Ellie. He didn't know if she'd want it back since, ya know, she hadn't died. But... Dal would still keep it if she wanted him to. He'd feel just as, well, honored as he had when Ellie had first given it to him.

Minerva was so sleepy after a long day of classes, but she really wanted to check out the stars. Living in the city she never saw the stars so clear. She pushed her hair to one side and let the aww of the sky sink in. This is so pretty Minerva thought.

Ellie embraced him, and kissed him back when he did. It seemed silly for the butterflies to be tumbling around in her tummy, but they were regardless. They had been together for so long, but they still enjoyed flirting and being outright adorable. Oh well. It's not like it was hurting anyone.
Interlocking her fingers with his, Ellie couldn't help but grin again. It all seemed so formal. Thank you for coming. It was oddly humorous, so Ellie replied: "Thank you for inviting me." And tipped her head a little with a wink. Just because. Nodding, she followed Dallin to the picnic basket and sat right next to him, against the wall.
Her eyes practically shone with happiness when he unveiled the amounts of chocolate and candy. Oh, dear. Ellie was such a sucker for chocolate. She decided right then and there that she was never letting Dallin go as long as he kept this up. "Oh, I'm just fine with this." She said with a little laugh. Beaming, Ellie peeked into the picnic basket and saw a bit of teal. She poked around the candy and felt that it was... a quilt. "Is that my...?" Ellie asked, without finishing, glancing up at Dallin.

Dallin grinned at Ellie's reply, winking back at her. He had really missed her in the few days that he hadn't seen her since the Hogwart's Express. He didn't know why it mattered so much... but maybe it just had to do with the fact that he'd spent the whole summer at her house, seeing her everyday.
It didn't really matter though, anymore. Because here they were, together, with a picnic of candy in the observatory. Where this whole thing had started. Kinda. Where it had really started. He laughed, putting an arm around Ellie's shoulder when she assured him that she was okay with the junk food. Good; it was the best he could do. He was okay with it too, though. It was a little less than a traditional picnic... but at least he'd remembered to buy a real basket.
When she asked about the blanket, Dallin looked again as if to make sure it was still where he'd put it. He nodded once, sharply. "Yeah. I didn't know..." He bit his lip, but carried on. No need to change the mood, right? "I didn't know if you'd want it back. If you'd missed it." Yes, he was aware that he was talking about a blanket. He knew it had sentimental value, though.

When she felt his arm go around her shoulder, she smiled again. That was a certainly nice feeling, being close to him. But not too close, of course. Because they were at school now... Huh. That would take some getting used to now.
Ellie chewed the inside of her cheek while Dallin spoke. It was thoughtful, really, for him to bring it back for her if she wanted. She looked at the blanket for a few seconds before looking back up at him. "I want you to have it." She said a bit quietly, glancing away. "Because..." She sighed slightly and rested a hand on his leg. "Whatever happens, I always want you to have a piece of me." Ellie said with a faint smile. She didn't really know how Dallin would interpret that. And quite honestly, Ellie didn't really know what she meant by that herself.
But this was all serious business, wasn't it?
"Let's try some of this junk food, eh?" Ellie said, grabbing two chocolate frogs out of the picnic basket. She handed one to Dallin and proceeded to take hers out of the box. Ellie squealed a little bit when it leaped from her hand, onto the ground and right off the edge of the floor of the observatory. Right down to the grounds. Ellie peered over the edge as the frog disappeared. "Huh. Guess he didn't want to be eaten." She muttered, turning back. She inspected the collecting card in the box: Helga Hufflepuff. She already had like, 3 of those...
