Default DADA one

The DADA classroom is done in subtle shades of cream and brown. The chairs, set in neat concentric semi-circles, are the revolving, fixed-to-the-floor kind; and there is a fair gap between any two chairs. There is a whiteboard at the front of the classroom and, to its left, a neat little table that looks like it's made of glass.

Come in and take a seat. Professor Glass is not in the classroom, but she will be here in a few minutes.

OOC: The class has now STARTED. Please don't RP your characters arriving late. If YOU are joining the class just now, pretend that your charrie was there all along. =)

Beverly had an idea and raised her hand to answer.
Dark creatures are magical in nature, they attack for the sake hurting someone not for reasons of sustaining their own lives for example red caps they bludgeon unsuspecting travellers so that they can used their blood to stain their cloth caps red, they do it out of purely nastiness. But pixies aren't dark creatures they only simply had a rude attitude and Demiguise are peaceful and herbivorous creatures. But professor I had a question, Are demiguise dark creatures I might be mistaken or something? And if there not I think all of dark creatures are really born to do harm and damage...

SNORT. "Huh?!" Rory had instantly woken up in the middle of what looked like a class...oh, right! He was in his first DADA class. He looked around him, tired, and attempted to jump into the discussion. But what exactly where they talking about? He caught a few words about dark creatures and pain but he wasn't quite sure what the question was, if there even was a question. Ugh. Why did class have to start this early? Rory wanted so much to go back to sleep but--

Focus, Rory. What is everyone talking about? He listened into a few people's answers and then instantly raised his hand. "Rather than cause harm to others in order to protect themselves and others like them, dark creatures typically harm others just to do it." Rory paused for a moment, remembering a word his father had taught once. "In a way, they're a bit sadistic."

Pixxi watched as Professor Glass asked about the student names, age and if they were to take Defence Against the Dark Arts on a NEWT level. Slightly panicking, she realised that this questions didn't concern her, and she let out a long sigh.

She smiled towards the Professor as she listened to the lecture. What was really Defence Against the Dark Arts? She had been so excited about starting the class that she hadn't even thought about what they actually was going to learn. All Pixxi heard was 'Defence' and 'Dark Arts' and she was sold.

"Well," she said slowly while raising her hand. "Dark Arts is black magic. Magic one shouldn't defile with. Magic only the darkest wizards and witches has used." The question was so hard that Pixxi gave a nod towards the Professor hoping the answer would be satisfying enough.

Kaiya raised her hand and stood up. "Well, to me, Professor, I think there is a thin line between the dark arts and regular magic. I think what makes the dark arts is the intention of the person using the spell. For exapmle, if someone was to jinx somebody, but was just defending his or herself, then it is perfectly fine, but if somebody was to curse someone with an intention of killing or maiming, or seriously injuring, then I think it would be considered dark magic, or dark arts. It all depends on the purpose you want to reach by doing it." Kaiya was very satisfied with her answer and hoped the profesor would consider it appropriate for the question. Kaiya sat back down in her seat.

Alyssa raised her hand and asked,"Professor Glass? What about dragons? I know that some consider them dark creatures because they are dangerous and vicious. But I don't think they are. They are vicious and dangerous for self preservation and to protect their young. They know that people hunt them especially for their hide and their eggs. So it would explain their viciousness. Any creature who attacks for self preservation can't be considered a dark creature, can it?"

Tyler glanced around the class room, either he'd zoned out for the first few minutes or the students were talking nonsense. He guessed the first. Since everybody else seemed to be introducing themselves and answering some sort of question he thought he'd better too, after all what bad could happen?

"I'm, erm, Tyler, Third year, I wanna' learn cool spells, I guess that's why I took this" he said, mentally telling himself a well done for remembering his name. Okay, maybe he was a little late on introducing himself but oh well.

How a dark creature differs from a creature that isn't dark..., Gwendolyn kept repeating in her head. This is- easy!, she decided and raised her hand. 'First of all, dark creatures like to harm. Sometimes for no reason', the young Ravenclaw said and made a short break. 'Werewolves, for example, attack people to... pass the disease, or....um... kill them. But werewolves aren't totally dark creatures. They are part human', she finished talking, and then looked around. That answer was a mess!, she thought, trying not to frown or roll her eyes.

Jackie seemed lost. Oh my gosh, was she dreaming.. again? Everybody seemed to be answering a question she hadn't even heard. She listened harder. Hm.. it was something to do with dark creatures.
Hmph. That was obvious. Defence Against the Dark Arts would obviously have some dark creatures in it, yea?
The question seemed to be how they were different from normal. She could give it a try.

'Professor, dark creatures are those that are intent on causing harm to others. They enjoy bringing harm to others. They are sadistic, which normal creatures aren't. Like a Banshee is a dark creature. Their screams kill. And the Basilisk, of course, for which a look can kill.' Jackie shuddered. Why are there such evil creatures in the world?
'But I also think that some creatures are simply named dark because of one odd person. I mean, werewolves are considered dark by some but most aren't. Most werewolves don't intend to attack; they do it accidently. Dragons, also, can be tamed. So, I believe that the main difference between a dark creature and a normal one is that dark creatures intend to bring harm to others and the others don't.'

There. Hope that didn't bore everybody. Was she repeating the same thing again and again? Jackie frowned and waited for the Professor to reply.

Ariella found herself a tad confused at the explanations of the dark arts. She was having trouble with thinking of ways to distinguish dark creatures and normal creatures. Nevertheless, she thought of an answer sooner or later. "I'm pretty sure that dark creatures don't have a normal life cycle. For example, they might not die at the normal expected time than another ordinary animal."

Ginny felt lost. Not knowing what they were talking about because she was day dreaming. Wanting to be in the conversation she just waited until a hint of what they were talking about was let out.

Amethyst's hand shot up. She was eager to answer the question with what she thought the answer to be. "Maybe dark creatures hurt others intentionally or to live. a creature who isn't dark harms defensively, having felt threatened, for example."

This means that, until and unless they have no other option, law enforcement personnel are required to opt for alternatives. No one ever got anywhere by agreeing to everything their instructors believed in.

"The important thing to remember is that, while intent can make a simple spell harmful, that is an example of a witch or wizard moulding a spell to his or her own needs. The Dark Arts, in themselves, are all forms of magic that require malicious intent to be utilized to their maximum potential, and whose endpoint is corruption. People who use the Killing Curse on a regular basis will lose the ability to empathize." Might as well throw that out there. Food for thought.

Emma had decided to keep quiet in this class. It wasn't that the blonde Malfoy didn't like the class but she was just really really confused. With her notes out on her desk, she tried her best to listen to what the professor was saying. And then all of a sudden, the Professor was quoting a famous person. Hmm... Defend ourselves? If Emma had been a cartoon, a lightbulb would have appeared above her head. Yep. Emma was back on track.

Now time for the question. How a dark creature differs from a non-dark creature? Hmmm... Well Dark creatures included: Vampires, Red Caps, Hinkypunks, and more... Now what had her brother said to her when she was in her third year here? Hmmmm...

The Malfoy raised her hand. "Professor, the difference between Dark creatures and non-dark creatures is that one, Dark Creatures do not have a complete life cycle the a regular creature would. I believe they exist as a physical extension of an evil intention. And, two, Dark Creatures seek to harm other creatures for no reason," explained Emma, raising her hand. She bit her lip, hoping that she had gotten the question right.
