Xiao Qiangwei, News Section Editor
Egypt Riddle-Greenwood, Daily Prophet journalist

Journalists love nothing more than talk about themselves. Reporters reporting on reporters is a pleasing exercise in mutual self-affirmation.

The Hogwarts job fair is thus a threefold victory for every quillwielder at the Daily Prophet - it is something to get the paper's pages filled with; the Prophet itself will be featured in any relevant article; and lastly, there is a booth staffed by genuine Daily Prophet employees ready (perhaps) and willing (possibly) to share their wisdom with young and bright minds!

This time around, the last task has fallen to Xiao Qiangwei and his colleague Egypt Riddle-Greenwood. A stack of glossy pamphlets is available for the interested student.

OOC: That pamphlet was made by Si.

Selena looked at the pamphlet she held. She opened it and skimmed through. oooh, shiny!' Selena smiled. "Hello, my name's Selena," she said to the person at the booth, "can you tell me more about being a photojournalist?" Selena asked.

Egypt was beyond excited about coming to her children's school to talk about the Daily Prophet. She hadn't told Diggy that she was coming to Hogwarts she wanted it to be a surprise. However Egypt was surprised that she was shorter than many of the students walking in the corridors. It amused her, but she could understand why her children would be upset by it. She smiled at the first child who came up to talk to her. "Hello and welcome," she told the girl. "Well I'm not a photojournalist myself but I can tell you that they work just as hard as the writers do. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but we only get 750 words per column so the picture has to work overtime." At least thats how she looked at it. "But my colleague Xiao can certainly tell you more about that aspect of the Prophet." She motioned toward Xiao so the girl would know whom she was speaking of.

"Oh, thank you," Selena smiled. "So what do you do? Like... what do you write about?" Selena asked curiously. She thought that it was a bit strange her being a first year asking about this... but she wanted to know her options... 'Knowledge is power,' Selena reminded herself, so she wouldn't be intimidated by all the older years.

She smiled, "Oh its my pleasure dear." she looked through the crowd trying to spot her son, or any sign of trouble at which Dillon would be the cause. She wanted to clap that one so young was interesting in writing. "Well I am one of the News Reporters. Its my job to report on all the news worthy events in the magical world and sometimes the muggle world if it affects us. I have to do my investigations, interviews and research as well. You can't write a credible story if your facts are wrong." And that was career suicide, and Egypt rather liked her job if you were to ask her. "Right now I am in the process of writing a piece on some happenings in the Ministry. I have a interview with Minister Regan later on this week in fact." Egypt really liked Minister Regan and all the good work she was doing in the Ministry.

"Really? That's quite interesting," Selena said as she nodded her head. "Have you ever messed up before and accidentally gave in a wrong story? Or does someone read it over first before printing?" Selena asked. News was a fascinating subject, so was writing. As she listened, she felt compelled to be a writer as well when she grew up, though her parents would tell her otherwise.

She gave the girl a trademark Greenwood smile. She was really interested in writing and Egypt loved that. "Its really wonderful and its never a dull day," she told him. Egypt looked horrified at the thought. "Oh no dear. You get paid to turn in true and accurate stories. Thats why your research is so important. You could get into trouble for printing a false or fake story." She let her heart slow down, she didn't want to scare the girl. "We do have copy editors who's job it is to do fact checking and check for grammar and things like that. But even with that they expect the writer to have done their job properly at first. The copy editors don't have the time to rewrite your stories." She smiled. She sat down on the end of the table, with some difficulty seeing as how it was taller than she expected. "Do you write?" she asked gently.

"Wow, must be really cool," Selena said. "Well, I do write, but not so much journalism..." Selena admitted, "It's more poetry and stories," Selena explained, "but journalism sounds a bit interesting." 'Plus my mother would go crazy if I were to be one...' Selena thought to herself.

Egypt smiled. "Well its a job I love going to everyday." She just didn't love the coffee, but the girl didn't need to know that. "I'm Egypt Greenwood by the way." where were her manners? She held out her hand for the girl to shake. She nodded listening to the girl speak. "Well the Prophet does publish short stories and things of that nature. But perhaps you want to be an author more so than a journalists." she told her. And the world needed authors just as much as news reporters. "My sister Kenya is an author. She writes children's books and books for young witches." Paris even used to read some of Kenya's books. "Do you write for the school paper?" She knew Paris had written for the school paper during her last two terms at Hogwarts, and she could only imagine the things that flew from her daughter's quill.

Jude Harrison looked down at the pamphlet in his hand and contemplated on how this seemed incredibly interesting to him. The boy did like to write in his spare time, even if there were little doodlings all around his papers as well. He looked around for anyone that might come up to him and sell him the pitch of why the Daily Prophet is such a lovely place to work.

Sarah had NO CLUE what she wanted to do with her life after Hogwarts. She knew she'd have to get a job, unless her parents wanted to support her for the rest of their lives? No? Hmmm.So anyway, because the answer to that was a no she's actually already asked them, Sarah was here at the Job Fair. All sorts of stands, for all sorts of things, and she planned on visiting them all, hoping to get some idea of what she could do.Of course there was ONE she knew wouldn't be a good idea - Quidditch Professional. She was as likely to end up doing that as the moon was suddenly to become bright pink. No, that was Miranda's thing, and she'd even spotted her friend at the booth as she passed it.

But this, this was the Daily Prophet, huh? Interesting pamphlet....

"It's a pleasure meeting you, Ms. Greenwood," Selena smiled as she shook the older woman's hand firmly. "Well, since I'm a first year, I don't really know exactly how the school works. Though I think I would like to write for the school paper," Selena admitted sheepishly. "I haven't read Kenya's works yet, but I suppose I should give it a try," Selena said. Journalism was interesting, though she preferred short stories and the like. "If I were to pursue a career of being a writer, just an author, what do you propose I do?" Selena asked.

Pepper was observing the Great Hall rather blankly. He'd taken his chair and moved it to the back of the Daily Prophet booth, not really feeling up to talking to any of the students. They looked interested and eager, and more than one or two picked up a pamphlet as they passed, but he was sure that, if someone asked him about a journalistic career, he would make a mess out of explaining.

That would be bad.

He would have felt much more comfortable handing in an essay on the advantages of becoming a journalist. His hyphenated colleague was already chatting animatedly with a student, so when a girl, by the look of her of the thinking-about-one's-future age, stopped and studied the pamphlet right at the booth, Pepper got up and wandered over to her. "Good afternoon," he said, a little uncertainly, "would you be requiring assistance of any shape?"

She was glad the girl gave her a firm handshake. There was nothing worse than a girl with a weak shake. "Well my dear you have certainly brightened my day." And she was being totally honest. "Well the professors are really good about giving everyone an equal chance. So don't think you can't do something because you are a first year. Just show your maturity and your desire and they will notice." It was the only way the younger students would be able to prove themselves.

She giggled, "Well be on the look out for the new Witchy Ways Mystery by Kenya Riddle." she told Selena. She tilted her head to take in Selena's question. "Well just start writing. Sit down everyday and try to write a little bit. Start a journal." she suggested. "And keep an eye open for new positions at the quill. I think thats the name of school paper here." she said. She hoped that was the name. "If you are a muggleborn or a half and half there are a lot of summer camps for creative writing. My daughter Paris went to one a few years ago and she really liked it." It was a long shot if the girl was a pureblood, but it was worth a try regardless.

For a second Sarah was sure it was the PAMPHLET talking to her, as a voice emanated from the vicinity of the booth.Staring at it, she turned the paper over and over, before catching sight of a person out of the corner of her eye. "Oh! Hehe," she laughed, turning to face the man, and giving him a smile. "Afternoon.Sorry, was in a world of my own then." My, that sure wasn't embarrassing, was it?

-groan-

Any assistance? Well, yes, but what on earth would she ask him? She wasn't very good at this. "Urrr, well yes please, if you don't mind.I was reading this," she waved the pamphlet in the air, as if he wouldn't have noticed her holding it already. "I was wondering if you could tell me EXACTLY what a journalistic career is like? I'm rather undecided on my future, so this job fair will come in very handy, I think..." Sarah smiled some more, trying to make him feel at ease as well.Truth be told, he looked more nervous than she did.

"Naturally," said Pepper, glancing at the pamphlet. He could see why the girl had asked - the text on the pamphlet was unhelpful. Whoever had written it clearly knew not a thing about journalism.

He gathered his thoughts. "There is not one specific path to take for journalism. Of course, you can study it at a number of universities, but you do not need a, er, degree in journalism or anything like that. If you are able to write well - and if you are lucky - you can get a sideways entrance into the journalistic career." He put the pamphlet back on the stack. "I went the traditional route, but maybe my colleague," he pointed at Egypt, "can tell you more.

"As far as the normal day-to-day workings go, you are either out in the field talking to people, or you are at your desk, preparing your articles. I understand that a lot of Muggle newspapers work this way - their journalists are more a kind of office worker who file away stories the newspaper gets from central press agencies. Our wizarding community is smaller, so we can often are walking out and about to interview people."

Jude felt his face flush as the woman said that they didn't bite.

'Of course, I have to put in an effort as well now don't I?' he thought as he stepped towards the woman that had spoken to him with the pamphlet in his hand.

Looking down at the descriptions on the pamphlet and then back to the woman he finally spoke, trying to hide his Aussie accent.

"Erm, so when I was looking at this," he motioned to the pamphlet, "I've written here or there but I think I'm more for the photography sort of thing, could you tell me a little about that?"

She wanted to giggle as the boy blushed. It was cute to have that effect on people. She nodded as he motioned toward the pamphlet they had laid out on their table. Egypt smiled, "Well dear I can't tell you any particulars about photography as that's not my area, but Xiao here can help you with that." she told him. Egypt was all thumbs when it came to all that.

Well an 11 year old with a dream. Just like Paris. The girl had wanted to be an inventor since she was 6 and she set out to do it. "Well that is certainly something to be proud of. And keep doing it. You can't be a writer if you don't write." She looked at her. "Well my daughter is a pureblood and I signed her up for the camp. "Here are a few pamphlets on some camps around London. May daughter really had a good time." she smiled and handed them over to her.

She smiled at the new comer. "Hello Emma. I'm Egypt Greenwood." she told the girl. Wow the girl was almost as tall as Egypt was. "Well being a staff writer at the Daily Prophet is an exciting job. I get to go out and investigate stories, interview all sorts of people. And sometimes I get to travel. Its my job to report on all the news in the magical and sometimes muggle world when it pertains to the magical community." She told her. She let all that sink it. "We have different sections of the paper. I'm a news reporter. Then we have sports writers, and lifestyle writers. So you can choose what section of the paper you want to writer for. If you love sports and writing it will combine two of your loves. Which is one of the amazing things about being a reporter." Egypt loved her job and she knew that thousands of wizards relied on the articles she wrote everyday.

Sophia saw the Daily Prophet Booth. She was excited for the fact that she enjoys reading and she likes taking pictures ; she was the photographer of her family. She also likes writing random stuff and putting caption to every picture she took. Walking excitedly toward the Journalist, she said "Good day! I'm Sophia Diggory." Going on, "Hmm. What it's like? Being a Journalist? Are you kind of pressured that you have to think very carefully of every word that you'll write and every news that you'll share?" she asked.

Pepper spotted another student - this one with an almost frighteningly eager look on her face - investigating their booth. "Please excuse me for a little while," he told the girl he was talking to, and wandered over. He would have liked Egypt to take care of the newcomer, but she was already busy with several students of her own.

Straightening his robes, Pepper walked over. The girl was already babbling excitedly, and Pepper had difficulty following her stream of speech. "I'm Xiao Qiangwei," he said, attempting to stop her. "Call me Pepper. Pleasure to be meeting you, Miss Diggory.

"In answer to your question," he went on when he got the girl's attention, moving some hair out of his eyes, "there is no need to think that carefully about every word. A journalist should try to be as objective and informative as possible. That is our duty to the public."

He eyed the girl. "Unless you are talking about the composition of each article itself. In that case, I recommend a good dictionary."

Ty didn't really know why he had come. Of course, there was the fact that this was at Hogwarts and therefore automatically awesome in his eyes, but other than that. . .

As he walked into the altered Great Hall, the first booth that caught his eyes were the Daily Prophet. It was just about the only thing purely magic that his household contained, and he had stared at all the moving pictures for HOURS after his parents had finished leafing through the paper.

Making his way over, Ty instinctively grabbed a pamphlet without even looking at it and looked up at the people - journalists, right? - there. "Hello! What's it like, being a journalist? Is it fun? Do you really get to be mean and cruel and boss people around like in the movies?" he asked the first thing that had come to him.

Of course, it never occurred to him that they might not know what movies were. Or find this statement slightly offensive.

Selena took the pamphlets gratefully. "Thanks, but though I might not go anyways, it's always nice to dream, right?" Selena smiled. As she opened them up to glimpse of the other life she wished she had. Her parents would find this thing outrageous. "For all of these, do you need parent consent in order to sign up for it?" Selena asked. She hoped the answer was no.
