He rubbed the top of her knuckles gently and loosened his grip on her hand. "I understand if you wanna stay that way. I'd hate to be caught anchored to a dork like me." |

"Thank you for being so understanding, Ling! I really do like you, it's just... I think things were moving a bit too fast for me to keep up with tonight, and I don't want to make a snap decision that might hurt people in the future - you see what I mean?" It's getting late, and I'm too tired for big discussions - perhaps we should retire to our separate dorms... | |

Something shifted in the fourth year's demeanor. The glint in his almond-shaped, dark eyes had dimmed at once. He wasn't sure what he was expecting her to do, maybe toss the idea out of the way and perhaps snuggle into his arms once more. So...she liked him but she didn't quite liiiike him, as he did with her? He couldn't really comprehend where this had come from but his once beating heart seemed to sink down into his stomach. The smile slid off of his pale face like mud and he drew in a lip, biting down on it in determination.
"Hurt people, right. I suppose..." he muttered, staring back out at the lake. People...that was the big punch in the chest to Ling. There had to have been another guy. | |

She was upset that such a magical evening should have to end like this, but what else could she do?
Tears ran freely down her cheeks, as she said, "I'm sorry, Ling. I really am." Kissing him softly on the cheek, she turned away. "Thank you for a wonderful evening." With that, she fled, weeping bitterly back into the castle.

"No, Emmy...WAIT!" Ling called after her once her mouth was unlatched from the side of his face and she was hurrying off. He didn't understand what had happened within that span of five minutes. One moment, they were completely infatuated with each other, at least he was with her and the next, she was sprinting away from him as fast as she could, the tears pouring like rain. He supposed he should have been expecting this. He never had ANY good fortune with girls, no matter what he did.
"Please, don't go--!" he shouted before he rose to his feet and attempted to catch up with her. Unfortunately for him, it was too dark to see the boulder nearby and he tripped over it, toppling into the lake with an echoing yelp. His dress robes were completely soaked and his lanky, black hair was plastered to his face. Fail. | |
