Arithmancy Lesson Two: Cryptomancy As you enter the Arithmancy classroom, the first thing you'll notice is that the half-circle arrangement of the desks is gone and the desks have been moved into several straight rows. Upon taking your choice of seat, you may notice that Professor Hadley is not in the classroom, but this is a message on the board: Quote:
OOC2: Class has officially begun. Do NOT post yourselves arriving late, but just pretend as though you've been here the whole time. I will try to edit the course of the lesson into this post as we go! Thank you! <3 *** Lesson Outline: Translating the message on the board What is cryptomancy? The task |
Dianna entered the Arithmancy Classroom to find that no one was there. She double checked the door and corridor if she entered the right class. Eh..Yes she did. She took a seat in the third row and looked on the blackboard. This was her first time attending Arithmancy and so tried her best in translating it.. She had a lot of erasures but was able to do it.. Hopefully it was correct.. |
The first thing Wesley thought upon entering the classroom was relief. Half circle arrangements had made her nervous since, well, last year. In that one class. With that one teacher... But she wasn't nervous. She wasn't at all. She was relieved because! The classroom had been arranged the right way. Wesley was so relieved by this organization, she was absolutely unfazed by the rooms lack of people. Taking a seat in the back, humming under her breath, the Hufflepuff began to unpack her things. When she was done, things arranged nice and neatly before her, she turned her attention on the blackboard. And gasped. She knew what that was! She did! Because Wesley happened to be an expert on secret messages! Knocking a quill or two over in her excitement, the 4th year pulled her textbook closer, flipped to the right page, and began to translate under her breath. |
Meeo! Time for arithmancy. Finally a class that made her think without making her head explode. Walking into the classroom, she paused for a moment, seeing the rows of desks instead of the half-circle thing they had last time. Seeing only two other people in the classroom working on...something... Evelyn thought about sitting in the front, but her legs carried her to the back of the room as usual. Sighing, she set her bag down and looked around, only to see the black board with a ton of numbers on them. Perhaps, that's what the other girls were working on? Taking out her own notebook and pencil (since she rarely used quills anymore), Evelyn wrote down the numbers and stared at them for a moment. Aw, right. Pythagorean number system. This shouldn't take all that long to figure out then... Pulling out her book, she quickly flipped to the page that had the number system and silently wrote it down on the coded message. Hmm, now to take a deep breathe, and start. |
Carter entered the classroom. He was going to greet the Professor, but didn't see her. He looked around and found a seat. He then looked up at the board. Smiling he got out his book and began working on translating. |
ZOMG! Arithmancy! Gold skipped into the classroom, sat down at the back, and took one, good look at the board. Easy-peasy! Dipping her quill in PINK! ink, the sixth year jotted down something on a piece of parchment. Hehe. Fun, fun, FUN start! |
Tiffany walked in the classroom and looked around. The seats had been moved. She smiled slightly before walking to the back and sitting herself down on one of them. It wasn't that busy yet, but she looked at the board and saw lots of numbers. Tiff sighed, and got out her things. She thought for a moment, before starting to day dream. She fiddled with her pen a bit, before slowly getting to work. |
Trixie walked into Arithmancy with a smile on her face. Well she didn't mind this lesson at all. And so the Blonde Fifth year, sat in the middle as no one she knew well was actually here yet. Cue pout. Ahh oh well. She'd find someone soon. Ooo....and now to get on with the work on the board. Hmm.... Okay then. One smile at the professor then to just relax. |
Celandine entered the room, paused and looked at the board and then nodded. "Okay professor." She murmured and found a seat, just chillaxing. It was actually kind of nice to take it easy for once. |
Namitha entered the classroom and started translating the message. |
Selena was usually lost in this class... but why not? She sighed as she entered the classroom and took a seat near the back of the room. She opened up her notebook and copied down the numbers. Translate it? Almost impossible. Selena was so epically fail at this. |
Patroclus filled into the class room, all be it with a hint of hesitance in his step. Arithmancy was not his strong subject, nor was it his favorite subject. His aversion to the subject had stopped him from coming to the first lesson of the term, but he felt honor bound to Gryffindor to turn up, and earn so points for his house, and also finally conquer his fear of numbers. Seeing the initial code of numbers, he tensed up. But forcing himself to breathe, he began to work of the riddle, and at last he had the solution on the parchment before him. |

Yes, this was something she could do. She took out her parchment and quill and started to solve the problem right away. Lucky for her this was one subject that came pretty easy to her. It only took her a couple of minutes and she had the problem solved. She looked over at Carter to see if he was finished yet. He was still writing but she didn't know if it was the problem he was working on or something else. She didn't want to bother him if he was still working so she just sat there silently... watching him work. Yeah, she liked to just sit and watch him sometimes. He was just so darn cute how could she not want to watch him. |
=) Professor Hadley had figured that the message would have taken the kids a bit to translate. Which is why she just had her classroom opened to allow them to start work on it before the lesson would start. Upon entering the classroom, she took a quick sweep around the room with her eyes to note who was present before walking to the front of the room. Everyone seemed much more relaxed now though, which she supposed was good. Nice . . . easygoing lesson. And judging from most of their faces, they seemed to have comprehended the phrase on the board as well! "Good morning everyone," Fina chimed. "Today, as most you seem to have figured out, we will be learning to write in code. With numbers. Who can tell me what the message I left on the blackboard worked out to be?" ooc: Dianna Malfoy and SenoritaMaxie? You two don't have to answer as I got your translations <3 (for the rest of you, feel free to use the spoiler tags ... [spoiler*=translation] insert spoiler here[*/spoiler] ... just take out the asterisks =)) |
Weeeeeee! Arithmancy! Finally something positive to be looking forward to. Upon entering the classroom Nancy's brow furrowed slightly as there was no sign whatsoever of Professor Hadley. Where was she? The Prefect frowned at the board for a moment before realizing that the numbers on there might possibly hide a message or something. Hehe. Yes, awesome start into the lesson. After a quick scan of the classroom Nancy took a seat next to Cela whom she greeted with a grin. Nooow, onto the message-thingy. Without opening her textbook the 18 year old's eyes flickered back and forth between the board and her parchment a couple of times as she scribbled down the message. Now...wait. |
Patroclus raised his hand, "Is this correct Professor?" and he gestured to his parchment. He was hoping he and the Arthimancy lesson would start out on the right footing. SPOILER!!: translation. |
Zane walked into the Arithmancy class and saw Selena. He saved a seat for Alex as she was still at breakfast, and sat down. "Morning Sel." he said quickly translating the message and sitting back waiting for class to start. SPOILER!!: Translation |
Selena sighed as she looked at the numbers again. Time to actually do work... she sighed and glanced at the numbers in her notebook. Selena bit her bottom lip and started to decipher it... 2... B, K, T.... 5... E... N... W... so which one made more sense? BE. Okay. First word down... a whole bunch of numbers left to go. Joy. SPOILER!!: Selena's Notebook The joy of translating numbers. She glanced at Zane. "Good morning Zane, Alex isn't here yet?" she asked. Odd. She'd expect Alex to be the first here. |

SPOILER!!: translation After Noir finished the translation she put down her quill and waited next instruction.. |
Ok Chris had been very non-calm when he had first seen the message on the board but after working it out and then finally reading it he was better. All he needed were some directions. When Professor Hadley came in and greated them Chris held up his parchment and spoke as he waved it back and forth in a slilly dance...still seated of course. "Helloooo Professor Hadley!! Is this right?" he said happily. SPOILER!!: Translation!!! |
Alex honestly found this considably easy for her all it was, was making sure the words made sense.. not to mention you know the Professor had left and all.. She wrote down hesistantly after translating SPOILER!!: Translation Alex had honestly messed up the first few tries but didn't everyone.. She looked from her spot that was apperantly near Zane and Selena but unseen by them. She coughed lightly smirking. She wondered if they figured it out yet, but no talking during this class she realised, the Professor probably didn't like hearing everyone talking. She raised her hand, "Professor I think I got it." Finally Alex thought secretly, doing it on parchment was easier then in your head. |

"Who can tell me what cryptomancy is? Raise your hands and then speak please, in turn." |
Nia raised her hand. "Cryptomancy is a specialism of Arithmancy," she started. "Crypto comes from the Greek for hidden or secret, and cryptomancy deals with the study of magical codes, cyphers and symbols. Basically hidden information." And with that, she went back to relaxing. Nia liked codes - she often used some in her journal. For extra security, of course. |
Kylie panicked a bit upon first entering the class. She hadn't been to arithmancy since her first year and she had no idea how to translate what was written on the board. She flipped through her textbook, and, unable to find the page, quietly sat and waited patiently for the professor to arrive. She'd have to go in and ask for help later. However, she DID know what cryptomancy was. She raised her hand before saying, "Cryptomancy is the study of magical codes. Things like cypher's and symbols... Although, usually, cryptomancy is tied with various runes and things of a linguistic nature." Was Arithmancy of a linguistic nature? Apparently so. She'd missed a lot since First year. |
Patroclus knew this one! His father's job as a Wiz-Archeologist dealt heavily with the study and uses of Cryptomancy. "Cryptomancy is the study of codes, and hidden messages, providing ways and study's on how to decipher said codes. Codes can be numbers, Runes, Hieroglyphics, pictograms and even colours." Yep, Yep his father's knowledge was bound to have rubbed off on him. |
