The gates to the Quidditch Stadium open and you walk through a short tunnel onto the green grass of the pitch. At the center of the pitch are two rows of school broomsticks lined up neatly. Professor Vindictus is standing nearby with a clipboard in his hands and a grin on his face. "Welcome to your first flying lesson!" he says in greeting to each student as they timidly approach him. "Come gather around but do not touch the brooms!"

This class is for First Year Students only. If you are not a first year student in the school RP and decide to post/participate in this lesson, you will lose Houe Points and possibly gain a date in the dungeons (the professor has a stack of holiday greetings for his fans that needs to be assembled and addressed).

OOC: This lesson will be ongoing throughout the day so that those living in different time zones can participate. Be creative and have fun in this lesson so that you can earn House Points. However, there is one thing that I ask - no injuries please. Splinters, scraped knees and elbows, or even bruises but no broken bones or broomsticks catching fire.

Isabelle walked down to the quidditch pitch from the castle excited and bustling with expecations.Today she was going to learn to fly on a broom. Her brother's had never let her try riding on a broom on her own so she was a little scared about the experience too. Izzie walked up onto the pitch looking around at the stands immediatly feeling very small. Her professor was standing in the middle of the pitch with a lot brooms lying at his feet. Izzie gulped a little as she recognized who the professor was.. It was the famous flier Maximus Vindictus. She hoped that she wouldn't make a fool of herself and most of all that she could hold on to her broom. Izzie walked up to her new professor and said "Hello, professor Vindictus!! How are you, today?"

Willow walked down the pitch. She felt of leaving the hospital wing. SHe had been there since saturday and she was starting to feel very lonely. She looked around and saw the place was empty, except for a hufflepuff girl, and Professor Vindictus. "Good Morning Professor Vindictus!, How are you doing?" she asked politely to him. She was feeling in a an excellent mood. The prospect of flying always made her feel that way. She looked at her left arm, it was good as new

A cold breeze whipped around the pitch and Vindictus shuddered. Snow is definitely on the way. But the cold breeze didn't dampen nor sour his cheerful mood. "Good morning, good morning! I must say it's a fine day for flying," he said jovially. "We'll get started very soon."

Saylie ran down onto the pitch, having almost forgotten about the flying class. She'd never been on a broom before and couldn't wait. She grinned as the professor said they'd get started soon and wrapped her scarf a little tighter around her neck to keep the chill wind from hitting her skin.

"Let's get started. Now, I want each of you to get beside a broomstick," Professor Vindictus said as he slipped on his gloves.

Isabelle nodded at Professor Vindictus as he started the lesson with ordering them to stand beside a broom. She chose a broom and walked up to stand beside it, waiting for new instructions. Izzie still dreaded the moment they were supposed to lift from the ground.

Saylie approached the brooms anxiously, as if expecting them to leap off the ground on their own. Visions of the 'Fantasia' cartoon she'd seen as a small child flashed through her head and she stifled a nervous giggle. Trying to appear calm and collected she stopped next to a broom and looked up at the professor. She was mentally preparing herself and failing miserably. Glancing over at Willow, she thought of how graceful she looked when she flew and realized that maybe, just maybe she could do this...

"Now place your right hand over the broom and firmly say 'Up!' " Knowing that first years were always timid when it came to the first flying lesson, Professor Vindictus demonstrated the simple command for them. "If it doesn't work the first time, try it again and again. You'll get the hang of it."

Izzie watched as professor Vindctus showed them how to place their right hand over their brooms and say up in a firm voice. It seemed easy enough. Izzie took a deep breath and then extended her right hand over her broom and said in her firmest voice "UP". Nothing happened on the first try but on the second try the broom lifted from the ground so fast that it flew over her hand and hit her straight in the face. Izzie cried out in pain at the impact because the broom had just smacked her mouth. Dropping the broom she exmained her mouth luckily though she hadn't started to bleed. Izzie shrugged and then tried again. This time the broom went gently into her hand without any tricks.

Saylie nodded at the professor's words and watched as he said "Up" and the broomstick literally jumped to obey him. She looked down at the innocent looking broom lying on the ground and reached her hand over it. "Up!" she said firmly. Nothing. Not even a twitch. She looked around, somewhat nervously, then back down at the broom. "Up!" She tried again. A single twig appeared to move, though that could have just been the wind. She sighed and glared down at the broom. "UP!" she said again. It gave a half-hearted sort of wobble and then stilled. She sighed and lowered her hand for a second, momentarily defeated, the resolutely stuck her hand back over it. "Okay, I see how it is," She cleared her throat and tried again. "UP!" The broom rolled over and lifted about a foot off the ground. "This is insane!" she muttered, "It is doing this intentionally!" Gathering all her concentration, she tried one last time before she completely lost patience. "UP!!" She practically shouted at the broom, and miraculously, it lifted and settled into her hand.

Blowing a strand of hair from her eyes wearily, Saylie looked over at the professor. She hoped in vain that no one had noticed her struggle to make the broom obey.

"Good! Very good!" Professor Vindictus beamed, "Now, straddle the broom. When you hear my whistle, gently push off from the ground and hover for a minute. Pull the broom handle towads you and you'll be on the ground once more. Let me demonstrate."

He did exactly as he told them and remained upright on his broom. To lower himself to the ground, he gradually pulled the broom handle towards him. "Now let's see all of you try this!" He blew his whistle and watched.

Ellie looked at the professor and then to she broomstick
"Up!" she said with conviction. Nothing
Then she took a deep breath "Relax" She thought to herself.
"HUP" And then the broom went faster and gently into her hand
She gave a little smile and look over the teacher.

Saylie took a deep breath, still unsure of this whole "broom riding" situation. She knew that she was more than likely going to be completely inept at this. Her hopes of playing Quidditch next year had flown out the window as she had struggled to get the broom to fly into her hand.

She staddled the broom, carefully recalling the professor's words, and pushed off from the ground. She succeeded in nothing more than an undignified hop that accomplished nothing-least of all flight.

She tried again, this time the broom listened, a little. It rose straight into the air, the front did at least. The back stayed firmly where it was, and Saylie fell in a flurry of robes onto the ground, flat on her back. "Um professor?" She said, from the ground, "I think I have a faulty broom." She knew the broom wasn't faulty, she was just doing something wrong. Sitting up, she wiped her gloves together, trying to rid them of some of the dirt. She stood up slowly, taking inventory of her limbs as she did so, nothing broken, though a little tender. "What am I doing wrong, Professor?"

Professor Vindictus walked over to the Ravenclaw girl. "The broom senses that you are afraid, that's all," he said knowingly. "Keep on trying. Not everyone masters flying in their first lesson." He smiled and walked up and down the makeshift aisle of brooms, checking the progress of each student.

"Now, if you feel confident enough to fly, listen carefully. I've fixed it so that these brooms will go no higher than seven feet off the ground nor will they accelerate like a Firebolt. To fly, you push off from the ground gently while grasping the broomhandle with both hands. Lean slightly forward over your broomhandle and this will make the broom accelerate. To slow down and land, pull the broomhandle towards you." He smiled brightly at all of them. "Don't hesitate to ask for help."

OOC: If you weren't here when the lesson started, pretend that you were here all along (announcing you are late will result in a loss of 5 House Points). Go ahead and RP your character learning how to fly (please do not double post - use the edit button). I'll be checking this thread off and on throughout the day.

Saylie nodded at the professor's words. "Okay, Lavik, quit being scared." She admonished herself. Stepping back up to the broom, she straddled it and pushed off. This time she hovered slightly, barely high enough for her feet to clear the ground, and wobbled back and forth. She grinned and relaxed a little and the wobbling slowed enough to where she almost felt secure in the air. She tilted the broom handle just enough to touch back down and decided to practice this for a little while before attempting actual flight--after all, what was the point of flying if you couldn't hover and get back down without fear of injury?

Watching as the other students readied themselves for flight, she settled into a routine of broom up-hover-touchdown-repeat, until she was comfortable with the motions.

Willow stood up beside her broom. This was certainly not her first time on a broom and she was sure it wouldn't be the last. She spoke loudly and confidently, "UP!" the broom went faster up to her hand. She smiled pleased and heard professor Vindictus instructions. If she felt confident enough to fly?. Willow smiled broadly again as she pushed herself off from the ground. She gently push the broomhandle at her, and step on the ground again. SHe wasn't sure if she was allowed to fly around a little, and she didnt wanted Ravenclaw to lose any points, so she raised her hand and asked politely, "Professor Vindictus, can we fly around the pitch?"

Willow beamed at him widely and then get on the broomstick and began flying around the pitch. The wind on her face gave her confidence and peace.

Camira smiled as she stood there, straddling the brooms. She loved flying, always had. Possibly so because it had been the only rebellious thing she'd done and gotten away with. She smiled at the memories of her sneaking out of the Manor in the middle of the night to practice flying. She looked around and was shocked to see that many students had no experience flying. She heard the Professor say they could fly around a bit, so she starting flying around. The brooms were a bit slower than she was used to and since you couldn't go higher than six feet, there wasn't much to do, but at least it was flying. She suddenly remembered what she wanted to ask the professor. She landed her broom smoothly and walked over to him. "Professor Vindictus", she called out hesitantly. She was still a bit wary of him ever since that dreaded detention. "I was just wondering why first years aren't aloud to their own brooms? Is it a safety thing? Also, I didn't know and brought min to Hogwarts...Can I just keep it in my room and not use it or should I give it to a Professor? I don't want to get into trouble."

Isabella got on her broom and gulped. She gently pushed herself off of the ground with both feet, and the next thing she knew, she was two feet in the air. "Wow," she whispered. Isabella slowly started manuevering her way around the pitch, trying not to fall off her broom.

Saylie had been practicing for a while and now felt confident. The broom responded easily to her commands and she hadn't made a fool of herself again. She looked around the pitch, noticing that a few others were out flying and gingerly set off, keeping to an almost crawl. She was proud of herself so far...for this being her first time on a broom, she was doing better than she thought she would. Smiling slightly, she increased the speed a bit, just enough to feel the air move past her.

Alex who had flown a broom a few times in her time, was easily able mount the broom and push off into the air. Once air born she felt a jolt of adrenaline and zoomed acround the pitch behind a group of other first year students.

Camira noticed a girl flying around that seemed to be her age and was in her house. She'd never seen her before. Odd, she thought. She flew up beside the girl, wishing her broom would go faster. "Hi there. I'm Camira."

Alex who had been conentrating on flying was shocked when someone spoke next to her. She turned and looked to discover it was another Slytherin girl that she had seen around school. "I know who you are," Alex said loudly over the sound of the wind, "but never the less, my name is Alex Avery, nice to meet you." She slowed the speed of her broom so that she would no longer have to shout.
