Lesson 2: Ancient Runes

A tall wizard is sorting scrolls at a table at the front of the classroom. You notice the room is full of rocks and scrolls. On the board are the rune sets you reviewed in Lesson One. Many of you realize the wizard is the Hufflepuff Head of House, Professor Tolkien who taught Charms last term. He appears to be in deep thought. He looks ups and indicates you should take a seat and wait until time to begin. His eyes again focus on the scrolls in front of him.

Adam entered the room and sat down in a desk in front of Professot Tolkein and he waited for the rest of the students to arrive.

Silvie decided she would try to get better at Ancient Runes, eventhough it was a difficult subject for her. She had attended and payed close attention to the first lesson and was eager to keep learning in the second one.

"Good Morning, Professor Tolkien", she said with a smile as she passed in front of the Hufflepuff Head of House's desk.

She then took her quill and parchment out form her bag and sat waiting for the rest of the students to arrive while reviewing her notes from the previous lesson.

Ariana practically bounced into class, a bright sunny smile on her face. Of course this wasn't how she truly felt, but she was sick and tired of feeling exsausted and felt the need for a change. It was almost as if she had had a cheering charm on her, but of course she hadnn't.

Walking happily up to the desk, she sat down nodding at the professor, a curious gleam in her eye. Not asking any questions she sat don, pulled out her old Anceint Runes notes and sat, ready to begin. Taking out her new quill and ink set, she looked up at the board, her bronze eyes shining.

Clifford timidly entered the classroom, he wasn't very good at Ancient Runes, all the different symbols confused him. He decided he had to make an effort however, anything to help Slytherin house earn some more house points.

He took a seat alone, and took out a piece of parchment, ready to take notes.

Excelsior enters the classroom slowly, looks around and is happy to see Clifford. Maybe the class wouldn't be so boring, after all. Smiling he greeted, "Hey, Clifford," to his friend and took a seat. He expected class to be boring, but he would give it a try and see what it was all about.

Amanda walked into the Ancient Runes classroom quickly. She didn't want to risk being late! As she walked in, she noticed that the classroom was looking quite different. Scrolls and rocks were all over the room and Professor Tolkien was sitting in a desk. Professor De Luca's desk.

Professor De Luca. It was so different without her there. Amanda liked her a lot, seeming she was the one that made Amanda finally understand that Ancient Runes wasn't a waste of time and it was quite fun.

Amanda took a seat in the back of class and waited for class to begin without saying a word. She didn't feel comfortable with Profesor Tolkien teaching Ancient Runes instead of Professor De Luca. Yes, yes. This was her Head of House, but it just wasn't the same to her.

Let's see how well this goes, she thought to herself, pulling out her Ancient Runes textbook.

Clifford was glad to see Excelsior, the more Slytherin's here, the more chance of earning more house points. He smiled at his friend. "Hey.." He said quietly, glancing at the Professor he lowered his voice. "I hope you're good at Ancient Runes, because I'm terrible." He turned back to the Professor, waiting to take notes.

"Welcome to Ancient Runes. I am Professor Tolkien and I'll be filling in for the rest of the term in this class," Tolkien stated as he rose from the table.

"I have graded your homework for Lesson One and awarded scores. You can check on the board by the Ancient Runes office to see your individual results. They are listed by your student identification number," he continues.

Slytherin Fox 08-22-2007 05:16 PM

"Me too, but I'll give it my best for Slytherin House," Excelsior whispered to Clifford before turning his full attention back to the front of the room.

Mary came into the class, her hair dancing. Her eyes twinkled as she practically danced into the room.
She grabbed a seat and sat down and kept her bag down. She took out her text and looked at Pro. Tolkein.
'Good morning, Pro. Tolkein.I can't wait for the lesson to start.' she said to the Professor, beaming.
She noticed that she was the only Gryffindor present, and waited for more children to come.

"The runes are a set of symbols that concisely embody the most potent magical system of the ancient world. Runic characters are letters that can be used for writing. This is their exoteric function. But for the wizarding world they were and are used for much more," Tolkien explained to the class.

"Who can name the people credited with development of the runes we see most often in Europe?" he asked.

Zoe 08-22-2007 05:24 PM

Amanda glanced up at Professor Tolkien. The rest of the term?!? Great! Just what I wanted, Amanda sarcasticly thought. Amanda wanted to ask about Professor De Luca, but she kept her mouth shut. After class she'd figure out if she'd be coming back or not.

Amanda sighed and pulled out her parchment, ink, quill and her old Ancient Runes notes from her previous years at Hogwarts. All those notes from when Professor De Luca had taught. Amanda shooked her head quickly. She had to face the fact. Professor Tolkien is teaching Ancient Runes now, and she'd better get used to it quickly.

Sana briskly entered the classroom with her casual manner. She glanced the room for a second. Looking around for her friends. But walking towards the empty desk since any of her friends were not there.
"Good Morning Professor" she said with a pleasant smile before passed his desk. She took the seat and getting ready to the lesson.

Slytherin Fox 08-22-2007 05:26 PM

"Umm, is it the Celtics?", Excelsior asked, hoping he was right.

Golden Monkey 08-22-2007 05:29 PM

Ariana frowned, raising her hand, "The Anglos and Saxons from Germany perhaps? I think...." she replied, making it nice and short. Honestly she couldn't remember.

Wayfarer 08-22-2007 05:31 PM

"Excelsior, interesting answer but let's see what you think the term Celts means?" asked the professor. Normally, but wrongly, most credited other groups for Runes but this student may have got to correct answer quicker than most.

Zoe 08-22-2007 05:33 PM

Amanda quickly looked up at Professor Tolkien and raised her hand, she knew the answer. Hopefully. "The Anglos and Saxons," she said, not sure if all of that was right. "Right, Professor?"

Slytherin Fox 08-22-2007 05:36 PM

"The Celts?", Excelsior answered, startled. "Well, they were a barbaric group of people which that occupied lands stretching from the British Isles to Gallatia. Originally they had six different languages in their culture. They were once called Gaelic and they are the ancestors of the Irish people today."

Wayfarer 08-22-2007 05:43 PM

"Very good, 5 points to Slytherin. Many will tell you runes are from the Germanic peoples so to hit the on the Celts right away is very good." Tolkien told the class. "Runes embody elemental forces in simple symbols which are used for works of magic and divination by the witches and wizards. By making symbols to represent the most important powers of the world, these powers could be manipulated for conscious human purposes. The symbols form the magical links between mankind and the forces of Nature."

mathi 08-22-2007 05:43 PM

Sana raised her hand and said, "The members of any of a number of peoples in Europe using the Celtic languages, a branch of Indo-European languages. And Previously "celt" has been used to refer generally to barbarians in northwest Europe and to specific groups of tribes in the Iberian Peninsula and Gaul"

Wayfarer 08-22-2007 05:50 PM

"Another unique aspect of the runes has to do with their structure. Because they are simple letters that can be carried in the head and inscribed on any surface as easily as the alphabet, they are the most compact and accessible of magical systems. Bulky instruments are not needed in rune magic. They can be written anywhere on virtually anything in moments when an emergency arises. No one can ever take the runes away or destroy them; they live in the mind." Tolkien added. "Who can name the rune most closely linked to element of fire?"

Droo 08-22-2007 05:52 PM

Cassandra beamed at Excelsior, proud that the first year had answered correctly. She nodded to him in appreciation, and continued listening to the professor's lecture.

Slytherin Fox 08-22-2007 05:53 PM

"Fe?", Excelsior asked, not really certain.

Excelsior smiled, seeing Evangeline enter the room. "Hey, good to see you," he whispered.

Excelsior was thrilled that he had answered correctly and earned points for Slytherin.

Golden Monkey 08-22-2007 05:56 PM

"The Thurisaz professor." Ariana replied, raising her hand. She was beginning to feel dumb now, and didn't like it. Her concentration was beginning to waver and she fought for control.
