Herbology Lesson One: Introduction to Hybrids Armand walked into the greenhouse and checked the plants once more. Around the class were several roses, of various shapes and sizes, some saplings with purple leaves, and a variety of other plants that were difficult to classify. For most, it would be easy to identify what they were: hybrids. Of course, most of the students should be able to figure that out. It was today's lesson! Once he was sure all the plants were fine, he opened up the greenhouse to the rest of the students and waited for them to file in. |
Cassandra ran into the greenhouse the moment the door opened and sat at the desk closest to the professor. She had missed his velvet voice. She took out her book and waited for him to speak. |
Mystie walked into the greenhouse, saw all the roses and took in the nice smell of some. Then she found a spot and took out her books. |
Jackie walked into the greenhouse, taking a breath of fresh air. She loved the smell of the plants, even if she wasn't particularly great in this subject. She walked over and took her seat. |
Kennedy entered the Herbology greenhouse classroom and observed some rose-hybrid type plants. She was very intrigued by their distinctive appearances and wondered which plants had been combined with a rose bush to make such different products. While still contemplating such matters, Kennedy greeted Professor Erikson with a smile and a wave and then stood on one side of the table in the center of the room. She dropped her bag against the leg of the table on the ground and began rummaging through it, trying to decide which supplies she would need for this lesson. |
Tag meandered into class rather hesitantly, wondering what strange new tortures this year's Herbology would bring. He had managed to scratch by last term with a little extra credit and he was hoping it wouldn't be a necessary addition on top of all the OWLs studying and Quidditch. Of course, this term he wasn't planning on trying to fudge his plant project. Could he help it if everything green he touched died? Tag looked down at his thumbs, expecting them to be black. He set his books down on the table next to Kennedy and leaned on his elbows, watching her. "All I'm ever going to have in my house are cacti," he informed her. |
Brooke quickly came into the classroom and seeing Cassandra went to sit by her. Why did she have to sit at the front? She always hated the front of classrooms... But she didn't want to sit alone. "Hello professor." she said with a small smile as she put her bag on the ground. "Hey Cassandra." |
Daphne stepped into the classroom and found an empty seat. She put her stuff down and began to take out quills, books, ink and parchment. Daphne wrote the date, currently a bright violet, turning to maroon. |
He nodded to Cassandra with a smile. "Afternoon, Cassandra." He waved to some of the other students that came in, who'd chosen to sit a little further away. "Kennedy, do try to give the other students a chance, would you?" He winked to her and noticed Tag walking in. "Tag, I expect you to make up greatly for last term, understand?" |

Kennedy then overhead Professor Erikson say her name and pay her an indirect compliment. She blushed and replied, "So I should only answer every other question, then?" Kennedy laughed lightheartedly. |
Ryder walked into the green house and looked around to see if there was anyone he knew. He saw Brooke sitting towards the front of the room. He walked over and sat behind her. He reached out and flipped her hair waiting for her to turn around. He was horrible in Herbology but he tried his best. He put his head down hoping the teacher wouldn't call on him. He was always nervous in Herbology. |
Cassandra blushed a little, making sure not to look at Brooke. "Afternoon Professor Erikson." She said opening her book, and not being able to contain her smile at the sound of his melodious voice. She hated having a crush on a professor... but his voice was so... well, anyway. At the mention of Kennedy's name she glaced over to her. There she was, the ravenclaw with all the answers... Cassandra was determined to outshine her. |
Turning around to see who it was, Brooke smiled. "Ryder!" she said. "Hey." She glanced at Professor Erikson and lowered her voice. The class hadn't started yet, but still... "How are you? Oh and this is Cassandra by the way." she said quietly. She hoped he was better at Herbology than she was. It was by far her worst subject and she hardly passed last year. |
He smiled at Brooke and then glanced at Cassandra. "Nice to meet you, I'm Ryder." He said in an almost whisper. He wanted to be as quiet as possible in hopes that Professor Erikson would not even see him there. He looked back at Brooke. "Well I hope this is your strong point because I am going to need all the help I can get. I am horrible in this subject." He said with a worried look on his face. He tried to force a smile out but he still had the worried look. He grabbed out his quill and a piece of parchment in hopes that notes might come in handy later. |

She turned back to her book, she had studied, all summer long, any free time she had, she was going to excel. |
Raeden walked through the doorway. It was just as she had remembered...it even smelled the same slightly sour smell. She hid a smile and hoped that she wasn't going to be to bad in this class. THough she remembered little about Herbology she knew as long as she actually tried she would pass. Though at first glance none would expect her to be one to care about such classes, and her actions reflected the same, deep down she knew she didnt need to be suspended again. She walked the rest of the way into the room glad she wasn't late. |
Jen walked into the greenhouse and sat down. She looked around and only noticed a few people she knew. This was going to be a great class, Jen thought. She absolutely loved to garden and learn about knew plants. |
"Oh you too? Yeah well I wouldn't exactly be the one to ask for help." Brooke answered in close to a whisper. Catching the look from Cassandra she gave an appologetic look and said with a smile, "I'll talk to you after class Ryder," then turned around to face the front of the class again. |
Ryder's mouth dropped open but he quickly closed it hoping that no one noticed. He put his head down and took a deep breath. He looked up again. Cassandra seemed like she really wanted to be top of the class. He thought to himself about how bad he was with plants. "Cassandra. If you ever have time maybe you can help me if I fall behind in the class. I mean you don't have to." He hesitated and put his head down. Now hoping she hadn't even heard him. Ryder looked up and saw Raeden enter the room. He motioned for her to sit near him there was two empty seats on boths sides of him. |
Jackie pulled out her books and started turning the pages absentmindedly |

He cut his comment short, realizing Professor Erickson was talking to him. Tag quickly came to attention and raised his hand in salute. "Oh, you bet, Mister E! I'm your man--you know me, all about planties and. . . green things." He flashed a toothy smile. When it seemed Professor Erikson had looked away, he elbowed Kennedy. "What's a hybrid?," he whispered. |
Raeden took her seat, and pulled out a notbook. She first smiled at Ryder then opened it and was instanly surprised. The book was full of notes, in well written handwriting that Raeden knew was not her own. They were very descrptive notes as well, and Raeden looked at the cove "Raeden Riddle" it read. It was indeed her notebook, but whose notes were these? They filled it, and surely someone must have taken the time to write such great notes. She sat with a slightly puzzeled expression for a moment. |
Erikson held back a laugh at Tag and looked over the classroom. "Sevens has a good question. May as well start class now. Who can tell me, and him, what a hybrid is?" |

Just as Kennedy responded, Professor Erikson began the lesson. She raised her hand and answered, "A hybrid is a cross between populations of plants commonly produced and selected because they have desirable characteristics not found or inconsistently present in the parent individuals or populations." |
Ryder put his head as low as he could get it. He had no idea what a hybrid was. A plant maybe. He had his quill in his left hand and was hoping to jot down the notes as people knew what they were talking about. He noticed that one girl seemed to really be able to speak like she knew everything there was to know. He quickly started writing down what she was saying about hybrids. He shrugged at least he was write it was some sort of plant. |
