It may be a big surprise to some that Professor Rae is holding class today, especially considering that her children have been taken from the school to places that are unknown. She's been spotted all over the school in tears, but here the door is open and the room is ready for class.
Once inside, however, you are quick to discover that Professor Rae is not holding class in the traditional sense. The desks are pushed back around the room, and there is a nothing of note... until you see the highly polished dark wood box sitting on Rae's desk. The lid is slightly ajar.
There is a note on the board:
Dark Creature Independent Study
Feel free to explore the Dark Creatures miniature collection bought for me several years ago. Each of the small figurines is a perfect working replica of a Dark Creature. Take time to look them over and take lots of notes. Using your notes and your textbook, please list the following for three of the creatures:
1) Name the creature
2) List the MoM rating
3) Give a physical description (as full as possible)
4) List one possible way to defeat this creature (as full as possible).
Extra credit if you include a drawing or sketch (you must do this YOURSELF).
Due: August 26, 2007
As you push back the lid to the box, you find 12 velvet lined compartments. Many of them are empty, obviously holding animals you aren't going to have to deal with today. Of the ones that are filled, you see the following creatures:
* A spider-like creature with a thick furry body and eight hairy legs
* A long acid green snake that keeps clicking it's fangs at you
* A fairy-like creature with dark hair and shiny, beetle-like wings
* A creature that looks like a monkey with scales
* A tortoise with a jewelled shell
* A winged creature with the head of an eagle and the body of a horse

'Glory, I'm ALIIIIIIVE!' she sang, before bursting into a rousing chorus of "You Are My Sunshine", starting to stand up - before promptly tripping over her shoelace, falling onto Jackie.
'Sorry, Jackie!' Ryan giggled, her hair erupting into bright bursts of colour every few seconds. 'Eeeew, big hairy spider...can we call him Caleb, after my Dad? I mean, he's hairy...'. She then concentrated on the spider thingy, noting how many legs it had. 'Jackie, are there eight or seven? And there I was, thinking my Dad had two legs...'.

Jackie nearly fainted with laughter as Ryan started singing and then fell over on top of her.
"There are eight legs, we'll have to hunt for your dad's other six legs over the summer!" she replied, coughing with laughter still.
Jackie hummed to herself for a bit, then realised something was missing.
"Oh my, where's the model spidery thingy gone? I think it scuttled off somewhere..." Jackie ducked under the desk and started crawling along the classroom floor.
"Here spidey spidey... here spidey... c'mon, I've got a nice juicy pygmy puff for you!"
Zoe gave a loud squeak and Jackie giggled.
"I was only joking Zo, here spidey spidey..."

Laylee jumped as she looked over and on her shoulder was a spider with very many black glossy and misty eyes! She was really scared of spiders, always had been and it was her WORST fear!! She started screaming and jumping around! "Jackie! Jackie! Get it OFF!!!" She yelped!!

'Jackie, you've LOST your spidery thingy? God, the Professor is going to be angry.....well, not that she'd really give it a second thought since...you know,' she said sadly. 'But you'll have to come over in the Summer holidays, definitely!'. Her thoughts then turned to her father, who almost certainly wouldn't approve. 'Well, maybe..' she added.
She stared at the snakey thing anxiously.
'Jackie....are you sure this is a model?' Ryan asked, refusing to look in it's eyes. She had a headache, and wasn't sure why - but maybe it was just the strain of everything that had happened in the past few weeks.

"Gotcha spidey!" she cried, placing the model back in it's box.
"Are you okay?" she asked Laylee, who was obviously terrified of spiders.
"Well I'm pretty sure it's a model, real snakey things are something like... twenty feet tall?" Jackie replied, turning to Ryan.

Jackie looked at Ryan, she didn't seem very well.

'No, no it's....argh!'. Ryan groaned, sinking to her knees. 'I've never had it this bad before...it's strange...I'm not ill, but surely there's nothing truly bad going on here? Maybe I can just owl home later, and see if - DAD!'.
She shouted the last word - she had just heard her father scream, an unnatural scream of terror and pain. Ryan was shaking, her eyes black, her face white.

Mallory looked at the instrusction on the board and then inside the box. She smiled, already knowing three of them. Excellent! The last three are so easy! She got to a desk and sat down.

Ryan's head was spinning.
She needed to find her father, make sure he was okay, but how could he possibly be okay? That scream wouldn't belong to someone who was alright, surely? It couldn't....she wasn't close to her father, but he couldn't be hurt...what if he died, and Ryan never got the chance to tell him how much she loved him? What if he already was dead? Her hair was black, it fell down past her shoulders, and Ryan didn't care, she couldn't do anything.

Ariana sat perched on her heels, drowning out the noise of evreyone around her. She prefered the peace and quiet of the common room to do work like this, and wondered if she could leave. Lord knew she had better things to do like listen to a bunch of stuednts chat about stuff that had nothing to do with the topic of the lesson. Shaking her head, she bent down to study her statue.
It looked easy enough to sketch she thought with a sigh as she took out a pencil and began sketching the outline, awnting to get this finished first before doing anything else. Making sure she had the shell finished, she put down the sketch and went on to write out a proper description of what the creature looked like.

Birdy skipped lightly in the classroom and came to an abrupt halt at the front of the teacher's desk. She cocked her head to the side and, once she had registered what the sign had read, broke into a smile. She pulled from her pocket a orange and black scarf, wrapped it around her hand, and selected the furry looking fairy from the box upon which it began to struggle and bit her index finger multiple times in frustration. Still beaming, Birdy skipped over to a desk in the center of the room where she pulled out her parchment and quill and titled her in indigo ink.
She bit her lower lip and blinked a few times as a kindly innocent way of composing her thoughts (the creature still attempting to chew through her scarf protecting her hand). Then, she began to write.

She finished her drawing of two and started to work on the last. The others would be much too hard to draw and she could not figure out what the snake-like creature was!

Ariana's head bounced up, her eyes blinking. The room looked diffrent somehow and she wasn't holding her notebook, which was now on the floor by her feet. She seemed more alert now too, had she fallen asleep...in class? Blinking more, she looed around, wondering if anyone had seen. Good thing the profesor hadn't been here she thought as she straightened up, yawned picking up her book before getting to work again.
She didn't understand why she was so tired, not when she had finally gotten a few hours sleep. She should be used to this; after all she had taken care of her baby brother pretty much by herself all summer, except for those two weeks she'd rather forget. Shaking the disturbing thoughts from her mind, she set off to finish her descriptions, making short form answers as she did. Her hand was honestly too sore to write in long hand today, and besides she was running out of ink, she'd have to buy more later in Hogsmead if she could.

Antwone determine five of the six creatures rather easily but he still could not distinguish the monkey-like creature with the scales. He grabbed his chin and tried to think back on his copy of Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them sitting up in his dormitory now.

Chloe walked into the classroom. quickly read the board, as she walked up to the box she took out her notebook and quill, putting her bag on her desk as walked up to the front of the class.
after several minutes of examinig the creatures and taking notes about them she closed her notebook and took her seat waiting for class to begin. | |
