Lord Voldemortist slipped through the shadows until he came to the dingy back alley behind the seedy hostel: The Hog's Head. He was to meet with Professor Lainey once more and was quite eager for the encounter, though he wasn't sure how it would turn out in the end...

Lainey was certain as she rounded the last corner that she was crazy, but there she was. She was confident, though. Her wand was tight in her hand and rolling in her palm as she approached. "Mr. Durskurk?" Lainey called, peeping around. She was sure no one had followed her... she slipped into the alley. "Hello...?"

He hadn't been sure from which direction she could approach but, he turned, smiling, at her use of his given name. "Miss Anjelica Lainey, it is good to see you again," he greeted her, knowing better than to extend his hand to her, though he made a point of holding them at his sides so she could see he was unarmed.

Lainey squinted into the dark alley. Her eyes first darted to his hands -- no wand. She wasn't sure how to reply to his greeting, though. 'Nice to see you, too,' just didn't seem right. "Yes," she replied slowly. "You seem to be.... doing well. Not in Azkaban yet." Lainey tucked her own wand behind her ear and stared into his eyes. " I have bad news."

"I would not say I am doing well but, I have managed to keep myself out of... trouble... so to speak," he said with a dark smile which faded at her mention of bad news. "And what news is that?" he coldly replied.

"Rae's going to have the Book destroyed," Lainey explained. She was as cool as he. Something about meeting the darkest of all dark lords in a dingy back alley for a second time made things easier. "She feels it's the only way to truly be safe from you and others." Feeling the tiniest bit braver, Lainey moved farther into the alley and away from the street. She could now see his face.

He frowned deeply. "So, you have nothing to bargain with," he said, thinking his time was limited if he wished to get his hands on the book. "Why did you come?"

Now that was an excellent question.

"In all honesty... I have no idea...," Lainey scratched her head in thought. "I said she was going to destroy the Book, not that she's destroyed it yet. You know I want to live, so I suppose that is why I am here, Mr. Duskurk. If you can tell me what I need to know, I can get you what you need." Not a complete lie... She could get him part of what he wanted.

Lainey averted her eyes. She was insane.

His eyes narrowed as he studied her for serveral long moments before he began to walk deeper into the alley. "So, you wish me to give you certain information and you are willing to steal The Book of Mysteria for me?" he asked with raised eyebrows.

Lainey bit the side of her mouth. She followed him deeper into alley. "I cannot freely hand you the entire Book. Not only would I put myself in jeopardy of prison, but I'd be putting my entire wizard community in danger. I do not trust you, obviously Mr. Duskurk, to use the Book for good. I can get you what you need out of the Book though." Lainey stared unblinkingly at him. She wasn't sure if that'd be good enough. This whole thing would only last as long as she had something to bargain with. After that... he'd have no purpose for her.

Voldemortist seemed to mull this proposal over for quite some time before he came to stand directly in front of her and sighed. "I suppose I will not get a much better offer than that and, as much as I loathe to admit it, if I haven't been able to obtain the book by now my chances of stealing it before it is destroyed are slime, at best. However, I would ask two favors of you for whatever information it is within my knowledge to give you. One, that you would obtain a page from The Book of Mysteria and two, that you would return an item to me which I forgot when I left the school."

Lainey took a deep breath. This was it. This was the moment she had to decide what was the right side? Who was she loyal to, and what exactly did that mean? She just wanted the school to be safe, and in the most selfish way possible, she didn't want to give up her second chance at life so easily.

Lainey closed her eyes, expecting the answer to come easier if she didn't have his dark eyes staring into hers. "I'll do it." Her words were forced, but strong. "Tell me what to do. But, then I have questions."

He smiled. "Of course you have questions and I'll be happy to answer half of them now and half of them after you retrieve page 315 from teh Book of Mysteria and the small silver jewelry box off the second highest shelf in the Headmistress' office."

"315," Lainey repeated out loud to help here remember it. "And did you say a jewelry box?" Lainey made a face at him. "Surely, a Dark Lord like yourself wouldn't have left a jewelry box behind." Lainey almost laughed. Of anyone to try and fool, Lainey wasn't one. She knew he had no heirlooms from his family. They'd all been destroyed in a fire. He was an orphan. Lainey knew that. "I never pictured you to be a jewelry wearing sort of guy." This time, Lainey did laugh. Cautious, always cautious, but she somehow knew he woudn't harm her. Not yet, anyway.

Sulphur a hovering dissillusioned cat that contained many protective and unspottable spells from the makes of the stone sisters, had specific orders to follow lainey alone, but also keep distance from being caught by either one of them. He slowly walked towards the couple ahead of him and parked under a dark tree keeping his distance from being caught.

Voldemortist actually smiled at her laughter. She trusted him. Well, perhaps not completely but, enough that she was convinced she could mock him without consequence. Of course, she was quite right. He had developed a certain fondness for the professor after attending her lessons the previous term and he needed her to obtain the items which were rightfully his but... Voldemortist slowly reached his hand into his pocket and pulled out, not a wand, but a delicately ornate silver ring with sapphires. He held it out for her to take. "It is the box in which I used to keep this ring. You may have the ring, it is of no importance to me but, I would very much like the box returned to me. I know you believe to rather intimately familiar with me but, I assure you that your lessons barely brushed the surface of my life and character. There were many things I was forced to leave behind when i was driven out of the castle but, I know the box was kept and I would like back what is rightfully mine."

Lainey held her breath as his hand went into his pocket... and she didn't breathe until he removed it - wandless. Her hand was drawn to the ring he'd produced. Her hand hovered just over his. She wanted that ring. But... she hesitated. Of course she hesitated. This was like taking candy from a stranger but on a bigger level.

Lainey swallowed deeply. "I do not pretend to know anything more than the surface. I doubt anyone knows more than that." Lainey's hand trembled over his, the space tiny now.

"I'll bring you back the box and the page you've requested. But, you should be aware that if I find harmful agents on either of them, I will not give them to you. I won't be responsible for more death, Thom... Mr. Duskurk." Lainey's eyes dropped to the ring again. It was beautiful. Fear, and fear alone, kept her from taking it from him.

"My word that you will find no traces of dark magic upon them, nor on this ring. I insist you take it... Or would you prefer I put it on to prove that it is not cursed before you take it?" he asked, his lips curling into a smile once again. His hand remained immoveable, though he could easily have let the ring touch her hand and was tempted to just press it into her hand.

"You think I trust you," Lainey said simply. She took a deep breath.. and took the ring from him. Nothing happend. She let the breath out and examined the ring. It was even more beautiful up close. "You get your page and box. And I'm sure you won't tell me what I want until I retrieve it for you. But, I want promises. I want a vow. I want things to change and I don't want anymore people hurt." Lainey couldn't help herself as she spoke to him. She slipped the ring on.

"I cannot make guarantees on the safety of others. Nor can I make an unbreakable vow with you," he said, gesturing around the alley which was desserted except for the two of them. "I will vow to answer your questions honestly, to the best of my knowledge and experience. I will also assure you that should you turn over the page and the box, I will haunt the school no more."

"You can make the promise. Don't confuse that. But, you won't." Lainey turned the ring around and around, admiring it's beauty. She'd never had anything so pretty, ever. "However, for the safety of the school for forever - will do." Lainey tore her eyes from the ring to look back up at him. Her next question spilled out of her mouth before she even thought. "You'd do the vow with me? If someone was here? You can't break that..."

"If you would in turn make it with me, then yes I would," he replied. "Does this mean we have an agreement? I will answer all of your questions at our next meeting, when you give me the page and the box."

"As long as you hold true to your half, I will do my own." And Lainey would. It wouldn't be a problem to get to the Book, nor the jewelry box. She hated betraying Rae, but in all honesty... was this even betrayal? She'd bargained, just like she suggested to them before, for the safety of the school. Surely, that wasn't all bad.

Lainey took the ring from her finger and slipped it into her pocket, along with her hand. "We'll have to meet soon, I think. Rae and the other staff members are getting antsy about the Book still being in the school and you being on the loose. Understandably.." Lainey turned the ring over and over in her pocket, slipping it on and off. She half wondered if she should give it back..

"Most understandably," he nodded, watching her fiddle with the ring, amused by her inability to decide what to do with it. He held his hand out to her, turning it over so she could see it was no trick. "We may not be able to make the unbreakable vow but, we can seal the deal with a simple handshake."

Lainey extended her right hand slowly to meet his. She grasped it lightly and shook it. "Do not betray me, Thomas Duskurk." She looked at him steadily as they shook hands. It was a deal.
