The Defense classroom was looking clean and bright, and Rae smiled at the obvious effort of the house elves. She settled behind her desk with a quill and parchment, prepared for her first lesson of the term.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Okay, I love how excited everyone is getting, but let's try to keep things under control here. What I'm asking is this... you may post that you arrived, you may respond to my questions, and within reason... to the questions and responses of others. You may NOT spam, chat with classmates, or otherwise jam-pack the thread. I will give you one chance, but if I have to remind you more than once, you will not be permitted to participate in this class. Thanks!

"Yes, I suppose you're both right. Lee, because I don't want you just to believe that what I say is true simply because I say it. And Lauren, because this world isn't safe. You leave these hallowed halls, and the world becomes large and dangerous. Some would go their entire lives without facing danger, but others will never be able to help it... danger follows them." Her eyes flashed with humor. "Ten points to Hufflepuff. Now, the other reason I think this subject is so important is because it teaches you a flexibility of mind that does not come naturally. For example... how many ways can we think of overcoming... a giant for example? Come on... let's brainstorm."

"Professor," Mithos said with his hand up "We can't really protect ourselves from something we know little about. So your demonstrations would show us what kind of dangers we are, if ever, to face."

Lee raised his hand once more, "Well I wouldnt use jinxes or such against it, Giants hate skilled wizards do they not? I would use something like fire to fend them off, something they fear"

"Yes, Mithos... that's also an important reason. How could you go out into the world and take on any Dark spell or creature without ever having heard about it? Excellent... five for Ravenclaw." Rae waved her wand and began recording the ideas on the board. "So... we've got 'Confuse them, putting them to sleep, and frightening them,'" she noted. "But do you know, at this time, the spells we'd need? Something to research," she grinned, clearly having a good time.

"Oh... Lee... something you just said. You reminded me, when you mentioned knowing that giants hate skilled wizards, the importance of knowing your foe. What good would going against a giant be if you didn't know what they feared the most? Any others?"

Davina raised her hand."Professor couldnt we try to befriend them,instaed of fighting against them,since as Lee said,they ahte skilled wizards that uses magic against them."

"You're right, Miss..." The Headmistress didn't know this young lady yet. She smiled. "The truth is... we don't always have to fight, do we? Sometimes running is the most sane answer. Sometimes pacifying. In truth, giants aren't evil. They're just big and have a more violent temperament. It would be cruel to attack the first giant we encountered. Five points to Hufflepuff. Can anyone see the merit in this little exercise I just took us through?"

Eunice rose her hand tentively, a bit unsure of herself. "Is it to get us thinking critically and logically about situations that we may find ourselves in?"

Kalaya raised her hand. "To show us there is more than one way to deal with something, and this class will help us think of those other options as well as teach us the skills we need to know," Kalaya offered although she wasn't sure if it was right.

Sebastian rose his hand. "Would it be for us to look at any opponent's we face and watch their skills and weaknesses? If so, it would help us in the defeat of an enemy."

He was surprised he had raised his hand, but it was too late. He has already spoken.

Jen nodded and raised her hand. "Going on the offensive isn't necessarily the best way to resolve a situation. There's more than one solution to a problem and they don't always involve fighting," she said. Maybe it wasn't exactly what the professor was trying to get across, but that was the way she interpreted this exercise.

Linnea raised her hand, "That magic, aggressiveness, and fighting are not always the best answer. Sometimes they may be necessary, but not always. We have other options. We shouldn't go blundering head first into something and assume something is evil just because it scares us, or represents evil. Evil only has as much power as we let it." She remembered what a friend of her father's once said, "Evil is just an illusion" she muttered.

Davina thought for awhile.She raised her hand."Its for us to exercise different ways of defense.Seeing that self defence doesnt necessarily means duelling."Davina said uncertainly.

Rae held up her hands to ward off the torrent of words and nearly toppled off her desk. "Oops... yes, I rather think you've got the gist of it. Now, let's see... first to answer..." She checked her quill, jotting notes behind her. "My Ravenclaw friend was the first to spot that I was looking for fluidity of thought and the ability to think under pressure." She pointed at Eunice. "And my friend Lauren was the first to point out that we don't always have to fight. A battle survived is a battle won, for certain. And Mithos... you're right as well. Simple charms learned in other classes can be highly effective. Ten for Ravenclaw, and five for Hufflepuff. Shall I tell you a story from my Auror days, or are you too eager to hear the lesson?"

Lee smiled, he would like to hear a story and would maybe keep the babbling of his fellow classmates on a low tone, "Please tell us Headmistress, I know that telling us of your experiences helps us learn and understand your lessons more". He was seriously sucking up, he was far to scared of Rae for his own good.

Jen put down her quill and sat up straighter in her chair. "Please tell us a story Professor. I'm sure it'll be very interesting."

Maybe she sounded like she was kissing up but she really did want to hear a story.
