Default Sorting Ceremony

If you are a first year or a transfer student, the time has now come for you to discover in which of the Hogwarts Houses you belong. After waiting in the Entrance Hall for what seems like forever, you are invited inside to stand beside the dais at the front of the dining room. Hundreds of eyes follow you as you make your way forward. Up above, the ceiling reflects the night sky as candles float above your head. An old, mangy hat awaits on a stool.

Once all is silent, the hat bellows out its annual song, telling all there is to know about the four Houses in a brief amount of time. The Sorting Ceremony then begins with the hat being picked up and a name being called. One by one, names are said in alphabetical order by surname. One by one, your peers are claimed as a Gryffindor, a Hufflepuff, a Ravenclaw, or a Slytherin. Where will the Sorting Hat place you? That is the question everyone in the room is asking as you now sit upon the stool and the hat is placed on the top of your head.

OOC: You may role-play for the Sorting Hat, but please limit yourself to one post.

It was good that Isla wasn't a shy kid, because as she walked down the aisle of the Great Hall and toward the Sorting Hat, there were 555, 600 eyes on her. Well, that was a big exaggeration. A really big one. First of all, she had no idea how many eyes there were in here, and even if she did, she doubted seriously they were all looking at her. It just felt like they were.

The firstie joined the crowd of other first years at the front of the Great Hall and waited impatiently for her name to be called. It didn't take long, because Bellchant, Isla was pretty much among the first names to be called. Isla had already figured she would be a Gryffindor, but it was just a matter of getting the hat to announce that. When her name was called, she stepped forward and took a seat on the chair, drawing a deep breath as she did so. How was it possible that this was one of the most terrifying moments and one of the most exciting moments of her life?

Once the hat was on her head, she felt it moving around, and she giggled at the feeling of it. "Hmm. A Bellchant child. Haven't had one of you in a while," the hat said. Isla's eyebrows wrinkled inward. A Bellchant child. Was that a good thing or a bad thing for the hat? She had no idea what kind of students her mom and dad had been...

"Determined to do well, I see," the hat continued. Isla nodded and made a face that said 'Yeah, I can see that, Hat.' It continued making some 'hmm' sounds and occasionally muttered something like 'I see.' Finally, it made its decision.

"SLYTHERIN!"

A super shocked Isla let out a small gasp. Wait. There had been some mistake. She was supposed to have been a GRYFFINDOR, not a Slytherin. Weren't the Slytherins the bad guys? Or the ones that became bad? She didn't want to be a bad guy when she grew up! "Umm, say that again, please," she whispered.

"SLYTHERIN!" the hat said, loud and proud. There had been no mistaking it this time. "Okay, thanks," she said to it.

With eyes that felt as big as quaffles, the eleven-year-old stepped down and walked slooooooowly to the Slytherin table.

It was odd to stand amongst the first years, waiting to be sorted. Everyone else her age was already seated at their house tables. They were all staring at them, the new students, which was a bit awkward. At least she did not have to do anything, she just had to put on the old mangy hat and let it do its job. She hoped she would be placed in either Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, though from the students she had met in Diagon Alley and the Hogwarts Express she knew the other two houses were pretty awesome as well.

"Morin, Jina!"

It was her turn! She took a deep breath, made her way forward and sat down on the stool. The sorting hat was placed on her head and over her eyes so that she could no longer see the other students in front of her. For a few moments, nothing happened. Was the hat thinking? She had noticed that it took different lengths of time to sort different people. And then it began to talk, in a small voice that she guessed only she could hear.

"Well, well, well ... compassionate, friendly, caring. Creative and intelligent too. Unable to handle criticism. Where do you belong, eh? Oh, I see ... yes, you should be in RAVENCLAW!" The hat shouted. Wow, it knew her so well! She was pleased by the result. That was the house for "those of wit and learning" right? She thought she would enjoy being in Ravenclaw and meet amazing people there. Grinning from ear to ear, she took off the hat and walked down to the blue and bronze eagle house table.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Catherine was trying really hard to keep calm, but she had been failing pretty much the entire day, so by now she was almost giving up. This was the moment she was most dreading and with each step she took towards the front of the Great Hall, the exact moment she knew was going to change her life forever got closer and closer.

The young brunette was the palest she had ever been and was indeed holding on to dear life tightly to her twin brother's hand as they walked in, trying her best to ignore all eyes that were now on their group. She hardly took notice of her brother's reaction as her terrified gaze was fixed upon the one object that was about to change everything for the both of them.

When the group reached the front, she stood as still as she could as if that would make her name not be called. A pointless thing, she knew, but she couldn't help it. At least she was able to control her breathing and those that didn't know her might have even be fooled to think she was actually calm. If it wasn't for the fact she was still as pale as she could get, that was.

The amount of time she waited for her name to be called felt like an eternity, giving her plenty of time to think of at least 37 different things that could - and probably would - ruin her first few days at the school. When they reached the letter 'M', however, Catherine stopped thinking of all of these problems and held her breath until they reached her surname.

When 'Mordaunt, Catherine' was called, she felt light headed and squeezed her brother's hand even tighter, not wanting to let go at all. Why did they have to be separated? Why was there such a thing as Houses, which split siblings and best friends up like that? What kind of mean school did that to their students?? That definitely didn't help the learning environment, not when they were all stressed for not being near those they knew.

The eleven year-old slowly made her way towards the stool, placing the hat on top of her own head after she sat down. She was somewhat relieved when the thing covered her eyes, because the fact the entire school body was now watching her made her feel sick. She hated this moment with all her might and her palms were sweaty. Catherine held onto the sides of the stool, pretending to shift a little to sit better, but really, she was just trying to stop her hands from shaking.

Stupid feeling, everyone went through that and they were mostly fine. Why did she have to have sweaty, shaky hands and look like a fool front of the whole-

"RAVENCLAW!"

Her train of thought was suddenly cut by the loud voice of the Sorting Hat and her body went stiff. No, she hadn't been hit by a Full Body-Bind Curse, it was worse. She had known it was coming, though. There was no way Noah would be placed in Ravenclaw, she knew that for a fact, and Cecelia was already in Gryffindor.

This was it, her worst nightmare had arrived and would be reality for the next seven years of her life. Probably longer because the circumstances would make Cecelia and Noah drift apart from her and they wouldn't even be friends anymore because those two were good at making new friends, which meant they would soon forget her as she as left by herself in another House, another Common Room, another part of the Castle entirely.

The applause coming from the Ravenclaw table did not comfort her one bit. It did, however, prompt Catherine to take the Sorting Hat from her head, carefully place it on the stool she had just been sitting on, turn around without looking at anyone and head to 'her table', eyes always on the ground.

It was here, the moment she’d been so eager to have happen. Okay she was lying but still. She was ready to find out what house she would be in, but it also actually terrified her. Just like a herd of animals moving through a farm—which she did not like one bit—she followed her fellow first years through the entrance hall and into the great hall.

She had survived a really odd experience riding across the lake. Although she supposed it was so the older students could get seated first rather than have the first years clogging up the hallway. Whatever. She took in a deep breath glancing at the two tables on either side of her as they walked closer and closer to the front. Why did it feel like there were so many eyes on all of them? Surely to Merlin there weren’t that many older students in the great hall.

She wished she could have left her sparkly skirt on but donned the drab clothing anyways. Just as she was about to start fidgeting with her outfit she heard the first name called and settled in to wait. Having Rivers for a last name gave you a ton of time to wait for things. She tried to count just how many candles were flickering from the ceiling but only got to forty before she needed to crane her neck back and look, which would just be weird. So she didn’t.

Just as she was about to crane her neck to the side and start counting something else, “Rivers, Charlotte” And there it was she snapped her eyes to the front where that ugly hat was sitting and wondered how long she would have to wear the dreadful thing before she could join what ever table it was she was supposed to be at. Turning she saw all the eyes on her and tried to stay calm, she had this, she could handle this.

”Hmmm” She heard the hat whisper in her ear, completely grossed out that she was wearing the same hat that millions of students had worn. She wasn’t sure if she had much guts like most slytherins or if she was more witty like Ravenclaw, but then she figured—

“GRYFFINDOR!”

Welp there it was. Popping off of the stool she smiled, placed the hat back onto the stool, and strode over with confidence of someone not 11 to the table of her cheering housemates. Here goes nothing.

Noah has been buzzing the whole day knowing that the time has finally come for him and his twin sister to attend Hogwarts. He did feel a bit sorry leaving mum and dad behind and Scar and Nugget, but tradition suggests that they must leave home and start their magical training. How exciting was it though? One shouldn't go far and see the excitement oozing out of the 11-year-old boy. Crossing the barrier to get to the train was something he thought he would never get tired of. Or the chaos that was the platform...or the cart full of sweets? Heck, even the luggage compartment was fun to explore, irking the upperclassmen who were there doing...their...thing? Yeah, he wasn't exactly sure what they were doing, but it did look fun.

Noah was too smitten with what was going on around him that he didn't realize that Catherine had her hand in his and that she was holding on to him for dear life. It wasn't like Catherine at all, and Noah knew without even looking at his twin that something was not right. He was about to open his mouth to interrogate, but the look on Catherine's face was enough to make him shut up and just be the good brother that he should be. Noah squeezed Catherine's hand twice, reassuring her that no matter what happens, he's got her back.

When they said ignorance was bliss, Merlin, they were right. Had he known the sentimentality of belonging in a certain house, he would have freaked out. It was at that moment when the other kids before them were called to get sorted did he finally figure out things. They had been assured that no matter what house they end up in, it will be all well and good back home. And as he began to look at the sorted ones, he got an inkling that yes, getting sorted into a particular house mattered, more importantly to the kind of family where he and Catherine came from. All thoughts were abandoned when Catherine's name was called and he had to let go of his sister. He would've said something encouraging, but he too was caught up in the moment. Crossing his arms in anticipation, Noah waited...and waited...until the silence was shattered by the hat's voice and the applause that erupted behind them. The 11-year-old watched his sister like a hawk, noting how disappointed she was as she took her seat. He knew that expression...he knew that sinking feeling. For some reason, Noah felt a wave of irrational anger rise from his chest when his name was called next. He knew what to do.

Shoving the other kids aside, Noah got the hat from the professor standing next to the stool and jammed the dirty old thing on his head. "Put me where my sister is. You sorted her just moments ago." As if the thing needed reminding. The hat was silent, but Noah could hear distant chuckles. Was it laughing at him? "PUT ME IN RAVENCLAW!" he thought angrily, gripping the stool, digging his nails into it. "Very interesting." said the hat, as it went on to tell how different he was from the rest of his former Slytherin relatives. "WHO CARES? Just be done with it and put me in Ravenclaw!" Silence ensued until the hat declared that he should be placed in:

"GRYFFINDOR!"

"No! NO! I SAID RAVENCLAW YOU STUPID HAT!" Red as a tomato at this point, Noah pulled the hat angrily from his head, marched towards the unsorted kids and jammed it on the head of an unsuspecting first year, messing up the queue of the sorting ceremony. He'd heard the roaring applause from the kids with scarlet trimmed robes, but instead of joining them, he made a beeline towards his sister. Gryffindor can wait.

Tall for his age, the curly hair, caramel skin, green eyed eleven year old boy plucked straight from New York City, New York (US) awaited impatiently for his really COOL name to be called upon. There was a regal feeling he always had with a name like his, not only one but TWO royal titles! How about that. Haha. As King waited blinking away the long lashes that always threatened his eyes constantly, dang those perfect genetics of his. Those pesky things!

Being the socially selective wizard he was, King wasn’t impressed by any of his soon to be peers so far. His brows raised as he shamelessly eavesdropped on the occasional conversations roaming around him. Should he start a wild rumor, just because of dire boredom?

Hm. Maybe later. Maybe.

There were so many wild thoughts roaming the young boy’s head, was up to no good? Ha, he would never tell silence is golden and a great weapon.

“Barry, King!” His name echoed

Unflinching and one might even say unamused, King made his way up the platform and on to the stool the Sorting Hat occupied up until this moment. Inhaling a deep breath he awaited his fate, though considering what his mom felt so sure of he had no doubt in the slightest that his momma had sorted his fate long before this hat would. After all his mom knew everything! She was like the coolest and smartest woman he knew. No wonder she was a therapist.

“Hmm sharp and astute, arrogant, cunning yet with selective kindness and self assurance-”

“Well don’t expose me, sheesh!” King felt ready to just deck this hat with his hand.

SLYTHERIN! Tme to get it over with and shut this kid up.

YEAH BOIIIII!

King smirked almost mischievously and very much satisfied with the obvious result of his sorting. His mom and dad are going to be so proud! His dad, Onyx, had promised to get a tattoo of whichever house the young King would be sorted into and now a snake would be added to his father’s arsenal of artistic ink decorating his arms. Goals.

The green eyed Slytherin wasn’t a complete butt! He turned to the hat and gave him a subtle grin and nod before stepping of the stool and heading down to the next location which also meant F O O D!

LONG LIVE THE KING!

Snake disguised as Raven Browncoat

Elias watched first years (and a few older ones) walk up confidently, timidly, and everything in between. Despite his general disregard for learning out of books, he’d at least taken the time to skim over how the Sorting Ceremony worked; enough to know that it wasn’t some randomized process that could see you thrown to the four winds. The hat looked in your head, and put you with other boys and girls whose heads were wired roughly the same way. Simple enough.

…until it was his turn to be called, and he walked up and sat on the stool. Fortunately, it appeared that with the exception of the dwindling amount of students waiting for their chance with the hat—and you’d best believe that as it came towards his head he scrutinized it for any obvious signs of lice—most of the students in the hall were only sort-of paying attention. Sure, they all gave a clappity clap when a house name was shouted out, but this wasn’t a performance or anything that needed strict attention from the whole student body. Phew.

And so he sat there, hat on head, as it mumbled about this or that personality trait. It even attempted to ask him a leading question or two (“A penchant for the main chance; that might be Slytherin quality, eh? Wanting to get the approval of the many?” or “Oho, attention to detail and a need to know minute facts before you’re satisfied. That sounds rather like a Ravenclaw, don’t you think?”)

He gave it nothing. He’d once been asked by one of his teachers to evaluate his own work, and when he’d modestly scored himself a B said teacher had observed ‘Well I thought it deserved an A, but if you say so’ and given him the B. Since that point in time, Elias was stubbornly against evaluating himself.

Do your own job, hat.

It was probably a good thing the hat was lice-free, or else it may well have taken this opportunity to shake whatever vermin it contained onto his vulnerable scalp. As it was, it simply called out

“Ravenclaw!”

and that was that. Off he went to the Ravenclaw table, to see how alike he was with the other students there.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Heath had never felt such a strange combination of nervousness and excitement as he stood in line waiting to be sorted. So this was Hogwarts... So far, it was exactly like the stories his family had told him. He'd waited to come here for so long, he couldn't believe it was finally happening! But then again, what if he found out out Hogwarts wasn't all he hoped? What if he didn't belong here?

As he looked around the hall, he saw his older sister smiling and waving at him from the Gryffindor table, and he was suddenly keenly aware of the hundreds of other pairs of eyes turned to him. His cheeks flushed bright red, and he nervously tried to flatten his hair to hide it. He looked up to avoid accidentally locking eyes with anyone and soon became enamored by the ceiling. Whoa... he'd heard about Hogwart's bewitched ceiling, but seeing it for himself was something else! As he gazed at the skyscape, his mind began to wander, and he imagined himself speeding through the sky in the Millineum Falcon. How awesome would that be?!

"JONES, HEATHCLIFF!"

With his mind in a galaxy far far away, Heath almost missed hearing his name called. Suddenly jerked back to reality, he made his way to the stool at the front of the room. With every step closer to the hat, his anxiety rose. What if he - Merlin forbid! - wasn't in Gryffindor like the rest of his family? What if the Hat didn't put him in a house at all and he just sat there forever while everybody laughed at him?

Heath took a deep breath to calm his nerves as he put the hat on. No sooner had the hat touched his head that he heard its voice in his ear, "Ah, another Jones! It seems only yesterday that I sorted your mother and siblings..." For a split second, Heath thought the hat was going to get it over with and put him in Gryffindor, but then it said, "but you... there's something different about you."

Gee, thanks for reminding me, Heath thought. As if he didn't already feel like an outsider...

"Different isn't necessarily a bad thing," the hat assured him. "Now let's see... such a shy, awkward boy, but there's so much more to you than that. I see you're intelligent , curious, imaginative, and you have a passion for the arts. There's ambition but not ruthlessness, talent, and if I may say so, a flair for the dramatic..."

Come on, Gryffindor! Get on with it!

"Interesting choice," the hat said. "True, you do have more courage than you know, but i feel you're a better fit for... RAVENCLAW!"

Heath blinked dumbly. Wait, what? No, he was supposed to be in Gryffindor like mum, Fiy, Ariel, and practically everybody else in his family! But there was nothing he could do about that now; the hat had spoken. All he could do was trudge away to the Ravenclaw table.

"Escalante, Kennedi-Liesel."

The bright, blue-eyed brunette stood strategically placed at the center of the crowd of new students. Not too far at the front exposed to the adults. Not too far in the back exposed to the older students. She was perfectly hidden. That was, until her name was called and her heart gave an anxious jolt.

It was her turn.

Rubbing her hands on the sides of her new school robes, and as quiet as a mouse, Kennedi-Liesel stepped up to the stool, sat at the edge and shut her eyes tightly as the Sorting Hat was placed upon her head.

"Mmmm...Escalante," the voice of the Sorting Hat sounded in her ears. "Where to place you--ahaaa!"

Kennedi-Liesel jumped. "Not Ravenclaw, please."

She'll gladly take Hufflepuff, but she knew where she belonged, and it wasn't a good thing. All of her ancestors traced back as Slytherins. Green and silver blood forever, but her ancestors had exceptional qualities. Ambitious, cunning, independent, strong. Just like her daddy. She...well. Kennedi-Liesel believed she inherited the trait Slytherins were once viewed as.

Coward.

"Not Ravenclaw?" The Sorting Hat interrupted her thoughts. "No. You are not. No. You belong in your house, and not because of the reason you believe in so. Better be...SLYTHERIN!"

Neddie gulped. The hat was taken from her head. She's in Slytherin....she...

Kennedi-Liesel Escalante. A Slytherin. GULP.

Now...to live up to the name.
