Benadi...

Two best friends, first real close during school and now inseparable as they start the rest of their lives together.

Benadi Apartment: Two bedroom apartment in the outskirts of Edinburgh. Their first very own home close to school.

Cassiopeia's Cafe: A friendly cafe owned by Benny's mother

Rehman House: The childhood home of Adi, home of Saieed and Indira Rehman

Wizarding University: Edinburgh Campus of the school, where Benny and Adi take classes towards their degrees.

Scene 1 : Cassiopeia's Cafe

Ben's mom's cafe was chosen as the location for the ritual meeting of the families. Aka the first full Atreyu-Rehman get-together. The one where the boys tell their loved ones the truth about their relationship and see just how they react.

It seemed he had confused him with his two simple words, the dragon waving off the question of what as Adi moved closer to him. Instead Benny was watching and listening carefully as his other half appeared to be working out details. A toss between it being a prank call and his mum’s being attached to the phone call he had received back up at the house. And a little boy’s welcome distraction from the sadness of the news.

He had to admit that he was grateful for Raj’s presence in the mix, the boy leaning against his father as he was held. Nothing like a child to help sooth his father’s heart. Something that Adi would no doubt need a lot of in the coming days. And himself when the toddler was asleep or lost in his own playful world doing childish things. “No…she wouldn’t,” Benny confirmed with a slow shake of his head. “I’m sorry Adi,” he added, wrapping his arms around the other two, a hand resting on his husband’s shoulder.

Raj was leaning against him and Adi automatically pressed his own cheek against the boy’s hair. It was very comforting to have his son in his arms. He somehow anchored Adi as the man’s mind worked quickly to figure out what had just happened. It was dawning on him now. His brown eyes, usually filled with laughter and mischief but now seemed blank, fixed on Benny.

“He’s gone,’’ was all he said.

They were a few simple and small words but enough to let Benny know that he understood now.

Adi leaned against Benny, all his energy seemingly drained from him but for the energy in his arms which were supporting Raj. Even his legs felt sort of wobbly.

His heart ached at the eyes directed at his as Adi looked to him and said those two words the former Hufflepuff had to admit to himself. He’s gone. All Benny could do at first was a slow nod of the affirmative. His father in law, the man who stood up for them and their relationship even when his wife didn’t, was gone.

Rajesh was blissfully unaware of the sadness in his father’s eyes. Instead he savored the closeness of his parents wrapped around him, his small hands absently grasped around the fabric of Adi’s shirt as they shifted more against Benny.

Then there was the weight as his husband leaned fully on him, the dragon tightening his grasp as he braced himself to handle the effort. They stayed like that for a few minutes before a better idea came to mind. “Perhaps…perhaps we should head back to the house…” Benny suggested quietly not wanting to startle the silent other half. Had they been alone, he might have been tempted to carry Adi back but he’d have to settle on being the crutch.

Adi could not remember ever feeling so heart broken in his life. Normally, he would keep these sort of things out of his life because he liked being happy and positive. Today was obviously one of those days that this approach was not going to work; today and a few days or weeks to come. To feel comforted and to deal with this situation, he would need Benny and Raj.

The man, for once, could not find words. He simply went on snuggling close to his hubby; the slight pull on his shirt as Raj grabbed it was a welcome. Leaning against Benny brought about the additional human comfort that he needed. When his other half spoke of heading back to their house, he nodded weakly. That was a good idea. The quiddity of Benny’s personality was shown fully at that moment in the form of concern.

He wanted nothing more to snuggle with his family or if Raj was too sleepy, then Benny alone would be just as fine. Adi completely forgot at the moment that they should be heading over to his parents’ house for the funeral preparation and wake. “Let’s go.’’ With great effort, he straightened up to stand as best as he could on his own feet though he was still leaning somewhat for support.

“…Luv you,” Raj let out as he snuggled into Adi’s shoulder, a cute smile plastered on his face. His grip on the shirt holding steady.

Okay there was a nod.

A small response to his suggestion, but it was response nevertheless. A move in the right direction meaning Adi was still with him in mind however vaguely as they stood there. For once not mesmerized by the creatures he adored that seemed oblivious of the feel of death as they grazed out in pasture. He couldn’t help but smile at the words that came from their son’s mouth, reaching over to absently play with the boy’s hair.

Let’s go…

It was Benny’s turn to nod as he adjusted with Adi’s movements, arm still around and ready to lead them back to the comforts of home. He admired his husband’s strength at the moment even if he was still leaning on him. If the roles were reversed, he likely wouldn’t have even made it back out to the hippogriff pen. He leaned in to kiss Adi’s head, more than willing to shoulder the weight as they moved. They were slow but deliberate steps, dragging them to where they wanted to go until their footsteps sounded on the wooden boards of the porch.

Raj’s words... They offered a huge comfort to Adi and he hugged his boy close. “I love you too, Raj.” and he loved Benny too for putting up with him in one of his lowest moments. Now that the news was sinking in, he was able to think little clearer. And while they were walking back to the house, with his legs feeling like led though his arms remained strong for Raj. “Is it time for Raj’s nap?’’ he asked distractedly.

He was distracted because...

All of a sudden his brain was high speed putting images of is dad before him: showing Adi how to properly hold a cricket bat, of them making scones with them getting covered in flour, of Saieed teaching him how to properly knot a tie... Adi could feel his eyes burning, the tears threatening to spill over. He clung even tighter to Benny.

Benny glanced at the clock as they entered the house. While it was a touch early for said nap, he could see the wisdom of at least attempting to put the boy down for it regardless. It was easy for him to see that Adi was just barely holding it together, likely solely because Rajesh was there in the midst of things with them. “Perhaps it is,” he remarked in agreement as he led the group over to the sofa. “Why don’t you wait here…” the dragon suggested quietly as he slipped from Adi’s grasp to take hold of their son. “Give Daddy Adi a kiss.”

Rajesh almost fought the notion of the nap like he sometimes did, but the excitement of the day coupled by the mention and the closeness seemed to lull the fight away. He let Papa Benny take him from Daddy Adi half-reluctantly before leaning in to kiss as suggested.

Benny nearly pushed Adi onto the couch to keep him from questioning him, fearing the stairs were too much, instead heading upstairs to take care of Raj. After a small touch of drama, the boy went down for his nap without too much trouble leaving his father to hustle back downstairs to his husband’s side. His steps slowing the last final feet as if mired in the seriousness of the tragedy that had befallen them.

They made it back to the house but this was something that Adi had no memory of. One minute he was outside and the next, in the house that he and Benny had bought together. It wasn’t until he heard Benny say something that he actually pulled himself together for just a bit to register what was happening. He was vaguely aware of him being led over to the couch, of Benny disentangling himself and taking Raj from him. The man did smile a little when he was kissed. His cute little son... weren’t he and Benny supposed to have lots more kids in the future? Anyway, it did seem that Raj was making a fuss about leaving but he was too out of it to suggest that their son stay.

It was no surprise that Adi fell back obediently against the couch, without a fight when Benny gave him a light push. He just sat there, his head resting on the back-top edge of the couch. He wasn’t even sure for how long Benny was gone. He could only see images of his father still.

He stood at the edge of the sofa, simply watching Adi as he sat there. Benny sighed softly as it became clear to his experienced eye that his husband seemed distant, almost lost, in the moment. Not really much of a surprise given his overall reaction the news. The dragon finally moved from his pause and cautiously took a seat beside him on the couch, reaching up and stretching the arm nearest Adi up and over the hippogriff’s shoulders. There was no need for words which was good because Benny couldn’t even begin to think of what words he could possibly say.

The former Gryffindor sniffled as emotion threatened to break through his own guard. His father-in-law might not be blood, but Benny was still saddened by his death. The man who had welcomed him as his son’s best friend and championed their romance once he was aware. He closed his eyes and took a deep breathe or two before eventually reopening his loving and supportive gaze at his husband. His hand behind Adi coming to rest on the badger’s arm and slowly giving it a rub.

Adi heard Benny approach but did not move. He didn’t think he had the energy to do that. His brain nagged at him though, and while he hadn’t thought much about it, the thought had finally presented itself to him: they needed to go to his parents’ place for the funeral. Given his father’s background, the funeral would be needed to be done as soon as possible. Now, he felt Benny’s arm over his shoulder and instantly leaned into him. The gaze was missed because he had now closed his eyes. The rubbing on his arm could not.

It was very comfortable there, resting against Benny and inhaling that smokey scent that always lingered. Adi seemed to have drawn strength from his other half because he was finally able to speak again, even if it were quiet than normal. “We need to pack... mom’s and dad’s place... we have to go.’’

Benny wrapped his arm around Adi as he leaned into him, placing a kiss on the top of his head almost instinctively. Hurt did call for kisses, especially on the head…right? Worked for Raj at least. He continued the light, soothing rubbing of Adi’s arm, figuring it was the least he could do, the least obtrusive if anything. Something that made it clear he was there with him but not smothering his other half. Something he was tempted to d to overwhelm him with his comforting energy.

He must have zoned out because he nearly double-takes when Adi finally spoke up. Mom and Dad’s place…”Right,”…whatever funeral plans that needed to be done. The dragon was still learning the rituals of the family he married into, but if Adi said move, then they moved. Plus they needed to take care of Mom of course. She might be an incredibly strong and stubborn woman but a person could only take so much in the time of grief and she shouldn’t handle it alone.

“Up-see-day-se…” he mused quietly, almost in a whisper, as he eased his way back up to his feet. His hold om Adi loose enough that the other man could move under his own power but string enough to bring him with him if the badger needed it.

Did Adi mention just how comfortable it was to be snuggled in Benny’s arms?

Probably but he couldn’t help unconsciously thinking about it again. Benny was truly the one person who could bring him any comfort in any situation. Well, a few select few came close like Lux, Hades, Henric and Ilia. And now that Raj was here, even he was giving Benny a run for his money. Overall, it would be more than a taradiddle if Adi denied that his husband was the best person in the world.

Despite him having said that they needed to get a move on, the guy made no effort to move. Naturally, it was only Benny that could motivate him. It was a bit of struggle and it seemed that all of his energy was put into climbing to his feet. Now he just looked blankly at his other half.

What now?

Benny would have gladly allowed his husband to remain in his comforting hold as long as he needed. Where he needed. He also was quite willing in following Adi’s instructions that they needed to go without debate. If they needed to go, they needed to go, even if Adi’s self was struggling with it. Even without the rings on their fingers and the marriage between them, the dragon was one to want to give his other half what he could. Probably the reason he didn’t mind the playful trickery and potions experiments and exercising in the end of the grand scheme of things.

Adi had moved with him to his feet on his own strength, but he appeared frozen in place again once he got there. Benny turned to face him, hating to see him so lost and giving him a loving look about to take him by hand but thought better of it. Time to put his training that his other half liked to use, offering a piggy back ride for the hippogriff to take. He could be the strength and anchor Adi needed. Carrying the man he loved in his hold. And with that, they were off to get everything ready to go, including the napping son. As ready as they ever could be to mourn the loss of a wonderful man.

NEW SCENE:

It was a month or so after his father was laid to rest and though Adi’s life was still continuing as per normal, he missed his dad a lot. It also made him sad that his mother would now be living alone. Well, not exactly alone in terms of living in the house by herself since his father’s brother would still be living there. But in the sense of not having her husband with her anymore. He couldn’t even imagine his life without Benny.

Speaking of the dragon...

Where was he?

“Probably off checking on his dragons, huh, Raj?’’ Adi peered down at his toddler son and reached to ruffle his hair. The pair were sitting on a large, bright orange blankie under one of the huge trees on the reserve. The man was just chilling out after seeing to his hippogriffs.

And there was something important that he wanted to talk to Benny about.

An egg.

There was an egg in the newest dragon nest. It meant their reserve was growing, and not just by dragons being brought in. Benny had made sure to check on it once he had been alerted of its presence and he couldn’t help be excited about the future prospect. Good things were happening. Finally tearing himself away, the dragonologist was wandering back along the grounds and spotted a certain duo alone in the grass. “Well isn’t that a pleasant sight.”

“Daddy…dragons…” Raj agreed with a nod, giggling as his hair was ruffled. “Pa-pa,” the boy weakly protested with his arms raised as if trying to swat Adi’s hand away. When he spotted the other man, the arms were suddenly otherwise occupied waving at him with fervor. “DADDY!”

“Now that’s a greeting…” Benny mused with a chuckle. “How are my boys?”

Adi laughed at Raj’s reaction. Really, there was never a dull moment when the son was around. Sure, he and Benny had (and still were) super happy before the toddler came along but Raj just brought something else to their little family. “Come on, little buddy. Hair ruffles are fun!’’ Adi would know because Wade constantly gave them to him during his first year at Hogwarts. Hair ruffles, fist bumps and high fives were things that all of his kids would be used to because he was going to use those three constantly.

The guy looked up, his hand in Raj’s soft, dark hair at the sound of Benny’s voice. Not to mention their son was shouting for his other father. “Hey, babe!’’ he called, his eyes brightening up as they came to a rest on his husband. He moved his hand to pat the space on the orange blanket beside him. “We’re awesome! Right, Raj?’’ Chuckling, Adi looked at Benny again. “You look extra happy. Something’s happened?’’

Rajesh had other ideas of fun. And yet he gave up fighting with Papa Adi on the hair ruffles. Little man was paying more attention to being surrounded by both men once more. Giggling as his head was kissed. Head kisses were better than hair ruffles. “Uh huh…” he said, before trying to repeat what was said. “Ah----sum.” That sounded good to him.

If his smile could be brighter at the sight of his two boys after his time with his dragons, then it did. Oh…the joy of family…both human and draconian. “Hey love,” Benny remarked, leaning to kiss Raj on the top of his head and then pecking Adi on the cheek. “Good to hear, little man.” He would want nothing less for them, especially after the family drama of recent months.

“Do I?” he asked as he obediently sat down on the spot he was directed to, acting all innocent like. But it wasn’t like he could bring himself to be less happy about his news. “We…have an egg.” Just like that. As if that phrase was mutual understood and evoked with the same fervor of everybody in the world. His mother in law would likely have given him a doubletake at least.

There it was again from Raj. That "Uh huh’’ that Adi was convinced that the toddler had picked up from Benny. This pleased him because he found it too cute that the boy was at least portraying traits so far of at least one of them. Raj definitely wasn’t fond of hair ruffles like Adi had been and that was just fine. “Well then, we’ll definitely have to give you less ruffles then, right?’’

Adi grinned when he was kissed. Affection from Benny was always the highlight of his days. “Yep! You do.’’ He eyed Benny, waiting on him to spill whatever it was. And when it was spilt, he got even more excited. “Oh, man! That’s awesome! I suppose this means congratulations are in order for you.’’

It also meant that they had a new creature joining their family.

How exciting!

“Mhmm…less ruffles,” Rajesh half teased his papa. He was okay with some like he was head kisses. They were loving human contact after all.

Awesome indeed. “I’m certainly a proud granddad.” The dragons were his children after all, only topped by Rajesh of course. So, any child of theirs was logically his grandchildren. At least logic for this dragonologist whose creatures were family. “And Raj will get to see a dragon smaller than he.” They would work on just how close he could be allowed to be later on.

“Dragon…” Raj mused, hearing the word so often mentioned around him. Quite pleased as the excitement of the two adults was infectious on the boy.

“Yes…dragon, Raj,” Benny replied, smiling at his son and reaching to tickle the boy, the toddler giggling in response.

Call Adi amused. Look at Raj already knowing what he wanted. “Fine, buddy. Less hair ruffles.’’ There was no use upsetting the son now or any time in the future. Looking from Raj to Benny, he said jokingly, “That would explain why that blond head has been turning grey lately.’’ After all these years, he still loved teasing Benny. “Okay, granddad. You’ll get to show Raj the baby dragon as much as he wants.’’

Adi watched Benny tickle Raj and decided that this was a great opportunity to bring up what he wanted to. He cleared his throat, suddenly feeling nervous. He wasn’t even sure why exactly. Probably he was just afraid of Benny saying no but that was the worst that could happen, right? “Hey, babe? Do you think the time is right for us to have another kid?’’ This was all said cautiously. You know, he wouldn’t want to just spring it on Benny.

“Har har,” he mused, shaking his still very dirty blonde head. Like he was really truly aging that fast. Not that he was vain or anything. Though Benny had to admit, he had probably set himself up for the teasing including the grandad moniker now bestowed upon him. “Yay for that…right Raj?” he asked, still tickling the laughing boy.

All Rajesh could do was nod at the question, giggling and squirming at his daddy Benny’s antics. Eventually he was free as the man became distracted by the question that hung in the air above him, the boy taking the opportunity to play with and examine the grass.

Benny instead was looking at Adi not sure what to say at first. Were they ready for another kid? “Um…I suppose,” he answered when he had finally found his voice, his gaze briefly flickering to Raj. The boy was four and had been in their family for about a year at least. Would he be okay with a sibling? Could they handle two little bundles of energy?

Adi grinned still because it was still fun to tease Benny. Plus, it was nice to keep the hubby happy and laughing. He now held out his hands for Raj to go to him. One of his favourite things to do was to cuddle with his son. “Promise there will be no more hair ruffles for the rest of the day, Raj.’’ And that was a promise he was going to keep. A day was probably the maximum he could go without giving the four-year-old a ruffle.

It was uncertain of how Benny would react. Adi had brought up the topic knowing that Benny could use a ton of logic as to why this wasn’t the right time in which they should have another kid. Adi was still set on having that big family but there was little he could do if his other half didn’t want that right now. There wasn’t much that he would not do for his dragon. But there was a surprise. “Wait. You really think so, babe?’’ Cue his excitement on the rise!

It appeared he had taken his other half by surprise with his more positive answer. Benny supposed that was to be expected somewhat given he was the one who was trying to keep their family…well… manageable. While Adi was more for the whole cricket/quidditch team filling their home with a ton of childish laughter. “I mean, it’s not like everything would happen right away.” They knew from experience the adoption process could be long and tedious, and any course of action was not without the need for patience.

Rajesh didn’t think twice about answering the call to Papa Adi’s open arms, getting up to let himself be caught. “Pro-mise…” he said in his childish tone of voice though no longer caring or really thinking about hair ruffles.

Benny couldn’t help smile at Raj and Adi, enjoying the little moments. “And Raj is getting a little older.” Just like all children got in the end. The boy didn’t always need all the attention that they gave when they first became parents.

“Not like everything would happen right away.’’

Ah, yes. Adi meant to talk to Benny about something else now. The idea had only recently occurred to him and he wondered how his other half would feel about it. But at that moment, he could escape that happy, bubbly feeling that was rising in his chest. Benny had said YES to another addition to their family! YAAAAY! Adi wanted to snog Benny right there and then but that would be inappropriate as Raj was there. Not to mention their various help around the place...

So, he’d settle for leaning in to press another fond kiss on Benny’s closest cheek.

Now, with Raj in his arms, Adi drew the toddler into a hug. “Promise,’’ he said in a singsong voice and tickling his side.

“Yes, he’s growing into a little, big man,’’ the guy replied with a laugh. Then he grew serious. “Have you ever thought about us using a surrogate?’’

One minute he was being hugged, the next came the tickles. And the giggles that followed coming from the boy in reaction as he squirmed in his father’s touch. “PaPA!!!” Giggle…giggle…giggle. Rajesh playfully struggled with his boyish strength.

Benny chuckled as he watched the hubby tease their son, in no hurry to rescue Rajesh as he didn’t need to. All in good fun and adoration. “Such a growing boy.” For sure. As for the topic at hand, his thoughts went first to another adoption given the success of their adoption of Raj. But that wasn’t to be the way Adi was apparently thinking and leaning.

A surrogate.

The word wasn’t a totally new one. After all, to have their family, untraditional methods had to be used. But Benny had always gotten hung up on the idea of having to find someone willing to go to such great lengths to help them. “Somewhat…” he admitted to Adi as he watched him and Rajesh. "But how would we go about that? And who?"
