The beginning is not always the start of one’s story

When surrounded by a world where there exist people who judge you by the purity of your blood, you find yourself trying to figure out what exactly that means to you, even if you don’t share their mindset. And when your search turns up murky waters that describe everything but the true crystal clear answer you were looking for it only makes things more unsure. That was the case when I first came upon the issue in my own life. You see while I’ve come to find after years of looking that I am in fact a muggleborn wizard, it wasn’t always clear to me. That’s what happens when you don’t know both your birth parents all that well and the one that you had the most connection to marries again, when I was still quite young, to a pureblood wizard this time.

So…when asked the first time about my blood status, a truly stupid notion when one is old enough to truly contemplate it, I answered what most people might have in my case knowing what little I did know seeing as my mother wasn’t a witch. Of that much I was certain. I was a half-blood…pure and simple and it worked for the most part seeing as I had my step-father and step-brother’s heritage in the pureblood realm of things to back up that I did have wizard blood in me. But in the end it wasn’t so pure and simple. I couldn’t claim my step-father’s bloodline as my own seeing as he wasn’t my real father. I hadn’t known that at the time…that he wasn’t my real father that is…I had been too young to remember anything different.

It had been my step-brother who had first brought it to my attention. Unintential, at least I so believe, as a lot of information passed in the heat of the moment is but then we were brothers and the occasional sibling squabble was bound to happen at one point or the other. And given as the fact that Sebastian was my older brother by a several years, the fact that I did not exactly belong was within his realm of knowledge and quite within his reach to lord over me when in the middle of one of our fights. And that was exactly how it happened.

Of course like you would suspect, I was quite taken back by the information yelled my way and quickly went through a whole slew of emotions and feelings. Everything from the initial surprise and then onto the uncertainty of the possibility of it possibly being true or not and finally the stage of outright denial. And by that time all memory of what Sebastian and I had originally been fighting about had been lost in both our memories, the older boy vanishing as well as he took my frozen movements as a time for escape.

Coward…

And to think in the years since he’s always said he was more important as a pureblood Slytherin than I was as a mere muggleborn Ravenclaw.

What's in a name

“Hmm…thoughtful mind…attention to studies. Must be…

RAVENCLAW!”

The words were no sooner spoken aloud by the Sorting Hat that it had been removed from his head and Nigel stood up to go sit with the applauding table. He could almost see his step-brother narrowing his eyes at him from across the Great Hall and through the crowds of other students. Why...he couldn’t be sure for after all, it wasn’t like he wanted him to be in Slytherin like him. Not after all the comments about his blood and the Snake house’s feelings towards such things.

At least in his new house he’d be able to strive on his own…away from his sibling. Far away he learned as he started being told about their living arrangements in the Ravenclaw tower. High above the Slytherins’ own dungeon quarters.

What had Sebastian said about them being HIGHER class?

Didn’t exactly get that impression from a house that stayed in the musty, damp regions of a castle. Dungeons were meant to hold criminals…right? Nigel couldn’t help snort at that thought but covered it up with a cough as the attention of his housemates turned towards him. Right…be nice and get along with people. Maybe he’d finally have a couple of nice friends that understood his quiet studious nature.

“Hey…Earth to Balfour.”

And yes…Balfour is the adopted last name. The name growing up and in school. Nigel Xavier Balfour. Garrettson is the return to my true father’s heritage that was quickly changed back to once of age and able to.

Nigel turned to look where he was being called, spotting an older Ravenclaw boy trying to get his attention. “Yes?” Was someone interested in saying hello?

“Pass the mashed potatoes, would ya.”

So much for friendly conversation.

It takes a long time to grow an old friend.

His house wasn’t exactly the place he thought it might be.

Sure they were friendly and supportive and he had a few housemates he could consider friends. But their academic tendencies as their mutual house was known for sometimes lead to the occasional competitiveness between members or altogether social awkwardness, at least that was what Nigel picked up in his first two years at Hogwarts. Maybe the awkwardness was coming from him really as he was still unused to being part of a group that cared as much as they did. Whatever the case the young Ravenclaw boy found himself trying to fit in or find a niche somewhere that he felt completely comfortable other than his house where he could get lost in the crowds as an underclassman.

The library of Hogwarts offered that place, its numerous shelves housing hundreds and thousands of volumes on things he had never even heard of. But still there was a calling for something more. It wasn’t until his first potions class and the homework thereafter that Nigel was beginning to see something new. His muggle mother was a scientist, his father…his true father he had learned was a doctor. So the sciences were in his blood and as he got more and more into the art of potion making with each passing lesson he realized he might too follow in the area.

More trips to the library were needed. Brewing potions was one thing, to learn of the actual process was another story, especially seeing as he was still learning on the level of a first year. Nigel was curious of things beyond that level, feeling more and more to be like the rest of his eagle fellows. And so he made his way down from the Ravenclaw tower to the fourth floor, careful of the changing staircases that seemed to always like to slip him up.

“Hello Mr. Balfour,” the librarian greeted him as he passed the front desk. The woman knowing better than to ask if he needed help seeing as he was more than willing to ask if he needed such assistance. And had done so enough times before.

“Hello Madame Remora,” Nigel returned offering a polite nod as he headed off to the main part of the library. The large cavernous room gladly relatively quiet. Perfect for some light reading, if one considered sometimes ancient potions texts as such. The way to the section that housed said books was becoming almost second nature to him and as expected…empty. Scanning the shelves, the second year spotted an interesting title, taking it off the shelf and propped himself at one of the alcoves to read.

Nigel was so engrossed in his book he hadn’t noticed when an upperclassman had entered the aisle, apparently franticly looking for something. “How am I supposed to get this assignment done when I don’t even know where to begin looking for information on the ingredient in question.” The Hufflepuff boy mused aloud as he looked along the shelves. “What…what ingredient?” Nigel tentatively asked, taking his companion by surprise as he apparently hadn’t noticed his presence there sitting in a corner.

"Caladium…” he answered, “you wouldn’t happen to kn---no, you probably wouldn’t.”

“It’s a bulb isn’t it? Probably find it in McGaritey’s book…third shelf.” Nigel replied, himself trying to remember things. He wasn’t sure but it was better than nothing.

The Hufflepuff raised an eyebrow, watching him curiously and glancing over at where he pointed before looking back at him once more. Back to the shelf and then at Nigel before finally deciding to take the chance on the advice of a younger student. Sure enough, when he picked out the book in question and turned to the index at the back of its onion-thin pages, the ingredient he was looking into was indeed listed within. “I don’t believe it…” he murmured almost to himself as he turned to the coordinating pages, his face brightening in triumph before finally turning back to him.

“Thank you. This is a big help,” he said to me, the now-closed book in his arm as he held the other out to offer a hand shake.

“Daniel Petrov.” The introduction was unexpected for the upperclassmen weren’t always seen as the most friendly to the younger ones especially outside their own house. Maybe it was a Hufflepuff thing.

“Nigel Balfour,” Nigel returned giving the offered hand a shake. Perhaps there was something more to be done but the Ravenclaw wasn’t exactly the most outgoing.

“Nice to meet you. Gotta go though. Thanks again Nigel,” Daniel remarked offering a friendly smile before heading out to check out the book and go wherever it was he needed to be.

It was to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

It's really good, Kat! But, of course, you don't need to be told that. So awesome...

The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it.

His attention to books and reading wasn’t in anyway limited to the Hogwarts library and its environs. Or his family library for that matter when he was at home. Nor was it limited to his chosen favorite class subject of potions and the secondary favorite choice of Herbology given its connection to the former. Nigel often times preferred the company of the written word over the company of his fellow students, something that stemmed from the roughness of his time growing up. Given the family he had and the life he had lived both previous to and after his entering Hogwarts, the experience with many others had led him into feeling more comfortable as the quiet one in the corner. The bookworm in the middle of the rest of Ravenclaw’s literary eagles.

Of course keeping one’s nose in a book had its good and its bad moments.

Nigel was busy studying for one OWL or another in the Ravenclaw common room. There were a few others scattered around the room, some studying or doing homework, others simply quietly talking or playing around. Realizing he had forgotten another book he needed up in his dorm, he had gotten up from the couch he had been reading in and turned, moving to head back up to his dorm to retrieve it. The actions only served to cause him to collide with a housemate in his movements, the Ravenclaw not paying much attention to anything other than his purposeful stride and the book already in hand.

“Um…I am sorry,” he said tentatively as he registered what had happened, his arms having moved to catch himself and whoever he had bumped into.

“Oh I’m so sorry,” a deep but softer tone echoed.

Two voices were heard at the same time, one masculine and one feminine as each tried to assess the damage to themselves and each other. Nigel quickly letting go where he had caught the girl’s arm, the young woman moving in turn to lean down and retrieve the book that had been dropped in the floor in the process.

“I apologize. I wasn’t watching where I was going,” Nigel remarked finally breaking the silence once more. The fifth year already feeling the blush redden the tips of his ears hidden beneath his lanky black hair. He knew it was his fault through and through, wishing he hadn’t been so clueless of others.

‘”Its okay. No harm done…rea--” She assured him, handing over his property, a book whose title escaped her notice other than the fact it was a textbook. Looking as if she was about to say something more but the girl breaking off at the end as she was interrupted.

“Elinor….come on!” Another girl called from near the entrance hole, clearly waiting for her friend who was supposed to be following her. “We told Rebecca we’d meet her in the courtyard before Care of Magical Creatures.”

The Ravenclaw girl in question…Elinor it seemed as she was called, looked to her friend and then back at Nigel as if debating her next action. “Um…bye,” she said taking her leave before following the other girl and heading out of the common room.

…leaving the older boy wondering what had just happened. And completely forgetting the reason he had gotten up in the first place.

All it takes is a second and your whole life can get turned upside down.

“…we regret to inform you of the passing of your mother, Elisha Garrettson-Balfour…”

That was how it started. How all of a sudden his world had been thrown upside down and the one person in his family that was there for him, that loved him no matter what…wasn’t. His mother was gone. From the family, from his family home while he was in Hogwarts at this time of year. Gone from this world…for good. Nigel couldn’t help but wonder why the ministry was sending him notice instead of his step-father though he supposed one went to both as the two men were her blood and legal heirs as husband and son even if they had no real binding connection between themselves.

He was glad that the letter and the owl that came with him had found him in his empty dorm. Noisy housemates would have inquired into his condition when his face had gone ashen and he collapsed to a seated position upon the trunk at the end of a neighboring bed. It had been bad enough to see his reflection in the mirror just barely visible in the half-open door of the shared bathroom, Nigel didn’t need others to see him like this. Not that he cared much for his appearance at any other time.

With a shake of a head and a sigh, he forced his attention back to the letter. To some clue as to what had happened but lifeless piece of parchment was useless in the regard. Guess they weren’t interested in revealing that bit of information. All Nigel knew was that that his mother, the now-late Mrs. Balfour, had been in high spirits and good health the last time they had seen each other…right?

“…Notice has been sent to Headmaster Larose as well and no doubt leave will be granted to you to go home for this family matter…”

Like that was a good thing. Nigel would actually prefer keeping himself busy at school to distract himself over the situation rather than be surrounded by his family at home for however long his leave turned out to be. But of course he would have no choice and being still 16 he was still a minor in both the muggle and wizarding world so he was subject to both rules and regulations. That would be one thing his step-father would insist on, the man always one to want him around when it suited him…when it made the family, or rather him, look good.

“Again, our deepest sympathies go out to you at this time of loss…”

His eyes flashed to the letter once more to continue reading but there wasn’t much more for the ministry worker to say. It wasn’t like she…he, he corrected himself seeing the name…was a friend or someone who really knew the family. Comforting words from a stranger could only go so far. Nigel crumpled up the letter into a tight, little ball, the last few words of the ruined letter the only thing visible should the Ravenclaw have looked at it once more. He didn’t need to…had already seen it…and had no desire to ever think on the man’s name ever again.

“…Sincerely, Jeremiah Puddleworth.”

The owl started pecking him as if awaiting a response to the given letter or a treat for his services. The creature not giving up as Nigel simply sat there taking it all in. Finally he swatted the creature away unwilling to deal with it at the moment. With a flap of its wings, the messenger finally flew away, leaving the sixth year alone once more in more ways than one.

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

There was a nice springtime breeze brushing over the campus in the late afternoon.

Most students seemed to be celebrating the end of term or at least relaxing from all the stressed that it involved, especially those who had to have taken their OWLs and NEWTs. But Nigel had opted to head outside the castle, the seventh year sneaking out to an area with a great view of everything…the bridge. His gaze passing over the candlelit school that had been his home and escape for the past seven years. It was hard to believe so much time had passed and so many things had changed since then.

Tonight was the last night he would be there. Tomorrow would be his graduation before the train left.

His admission to university was set in stone and he would begin in the fall to continue his studying of his love of potions. At least that part of his life was secure and going as well as he could possibly ask fate to allow it. But still, there was the summer back at the estate as he settled his belongings in order. There was no way Nigel would remain with his step-family for any longer then he absolutely had to. Not that he was wanted there anyway… the crumpled letter in his pocket was proof of that.

It seemed his stepfather felt no need to be caring of him now that his graduation had come, his deceased mother no longer connecting him to the man. Nigel could only imagine what his step-brother felt of the matter but no doubt he took some pleasure in the fact that he was the preferred son after all. Not that either had any real doubt in the matter. Nigel had been the muggleborn invader…practically the black sheep in more ways than one just by being born to his mother’s first husband.

The seventh year shook his head, trying to bite back any emotion that threatened to overtake him as his thoughts went dark. Just because he had felt the sting of their behavior towards him before didn’t mean it hurt any less. It just cemented how very alone in the world he truly was. Probably was fitting then that he was spending the last night at Hogwarts alone too, the seventh year avoiding the crowds that would eventually fill the Great Hall for the closing feast. No point in pretending anyone from within its stone walls was going to really stay in touch with him after tomorrow or miss his presence in their lives.

He was a loner...losing those close to him had only made it worse. His desire to be separate fueled.

But he was legal in both the wizarding and muggle world now with the passing of his last birthday. And if his last remaining ‘family’ wanted him gone, so be it. He would return to his roots and strive for the best on his own.

And Nigel Balfour would be no more.

A gift in season is a double favor to the needy.

Nigel wondered what he had gotten himself into.

Finding an appropriate master to study under in his upcoming tutelage had been harder that he had originally thought. It seemed they either had an apprentice or had their own idea on what they wanted in their assistant and he currently didn’t fit any of their molds.

Studying in the university library one day, a test looming in the not so distant future, he pushed his troubles to the back of his mind the best he could to try and concentrate on his work. It lasted for a while until the sound of his name broke him from all thoughts of the latest draught he had been focusing on.

“Nigel…?” the voice said again and he looked up to see a face that seemed somewhat familiar but he couldn’t ‘t quite place the face. A look of half-confusion gracing his features as he looked at the man who appeared to be a few years older than him. “Yes…may I help you?”

“Oh good I remembered the right name,” the stranger replied giving a relieved smile. “Daniel Petrov…I don’t know if you remember me, but you helped me at Hogwarts once…or twice.”

A look of recognition crossed Nigel’s face as the name and description of the last interaction was added to the face that stood before him. Yes he did remember him, even if they hadn’t exactly been friends then just had been like ships passing in the night with the younger man helping the older man with a search in the library. “Aye, now I do though it is a surprise you remembered me,” he admitted, never thinking much of himself in the way of people caring of his existence. It wasn’t as if many people were in his life and giving a great deal of care.

“Well surprisingly my memory has improved since we saw each other last,” Daniel stated with a chuckle as he slid into a seat across from the other man. A simply joke referring back to the fact that what he had been assisted with was something he really should never forget. “And when I saw you, I thought it was you but was hesitant to just yell out in uncertainty.” Eying the book in front of the younger man, he looked between it and Nigel. “So you’re a student here now….potions I’m assuming.”

Nigel gave a nod confirming the assumption, not daring to point out it was an obvious choice since his companion had said it so matter-of-factly. He had stated a fact more than guessed this time. “Aye…my second year."

“Ah…I remember that time,” Daniel said with a nod, absently thinking back to his own schooling just a couple of years before. “Have you found a master to study with next year?”

Nigel unconsciously groaned at the question before he could even think and catch himself.

Daniel bit back a laugh despite of himself and the seriousness of the situation. “That well, huh?” He asked rhetorically since it was clear to him that it was causing his acquaintance some problems. The groan was only the audible confirmation to the look he had been given that he doubted the reserved younger man was even aware of.

“I think it would be easier to brew 10 perfect vials of Felix felicus then it would be for me to find a master at the moment.” Never had a task that involved potions brewing been so…troublesome to the former Ravenclaw and unfortunately it was one of the most important things he needed for him to ever be considered as a reputable and properly trained potioner. Scratch that…the MOST important item.

“Maybe I can help,” Daniel remarked breaking the silence that had grown up between them. “Consider it…returning the favor.”

Have Potion Will Travel.

Daniel had come through like he had promised and Nigel suddenly found himself the apprentice of Master De Savignase. Of course that had required him traveling and moving away from the country that had been his home. Granted he didn’t have much connections there anymore given the passing of his mother and his step-father cutting him off but it still had meaning to him. Nevertheless, the potioner had made up his mind when the time came and apparated to the address he had been given in France.

“NIGEL!”

The assistant in question almost winced at the sound of his name being bellowed from the lab. He had merely stepped out for a break and some fresh air only to come back to an agitated man calling for his attention. He hurried down the stairs to see what was the matter, nothing coming immediately to mind as he got closer.

No flames…no smoke…no boiled over mess.

And if he remembered correctly, the potion he had set aside was the proper color for the step it was in.

So Nigel was perplexed to say the least as to why Master De Savignase had yelled for him. It wasn’t like the man himself didn’t leave the room at times during his own brewing so that wasn’t the problem…right?

“Yes sir?” he found himself asking, being extremely polite and obedient. The former Ravenclaw having reverted back to the behavior he had been schooled in at the pureblood home he was raised in. He was still trying to figure out what kind of man the Frenchman before him was before he would even allow himself to relax into the relationship.

“Are these your notebooks?” De Savignase asked, holding up the leather-bound book that had been left open atop its nearly identical brother on the worktable beside his cauldron. He had been taking notes as well as reviewing anything he previously had written about the field of potions he was currently working on.

“Yes sir,” Nigel replied, not hiding anything as if he possibly could. They were the only ones allowed down here after all. Not even the man’s house-elf was. And there wasn’t anything scandalous written within the parchment pages…nothing that was protected and not able to be taken into his own bank of knowledge.

So why did he feel guilty all of a sudden for having them in his possession?

“Interesting. This use of dittany is rather unique.” The potions master mused aloud, his gaze almost wistful and not even focused on either the young man he was speaking to nor the notebook he was referring to. Or even the potion that was involved in the equation for that matter. “Truly unique,” he echoed with smooth French accent of his. “However did you think of it?”

However did he think of it?

That question displayed interest in his own personal work and not on what he knew or learned. Was that why he had been called down here for? Not to be yelled at for unknowingly doing anything wrong? At least in his opinion. Nigel found himself inwardly giving a sigh of relief. After years of feeling not good enough for people, he had been deathly afraid of screwing things up and stopping his dreams in his tracks. It was especially true with his apprenticeship so new in its beginning. Though he was honest with himself he would likely be nervous up until the day he had actually completed his required work and be entitled to live under the title of potions master himself.

Whenever that was.

“Um…a lot of experimentation and reading up on the matter,” Nigel finally answered after trying to think of the best answers to use and not seem unequipped to answer. It was the truth however…the full truth as to how he had come about with the idea they were discussing. Well that and the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death. St. Mungo’s healers had supposedly did all they could to help her before her eventual demise according to the letters to his inquiries on the matter after the fact. However there was uncertainties he himself had had and that was another push in the direction he had gone. His first venture into assisting with the healing use of potions.

“Has it been tested out?”

“Yes sir. On a recommendation from a professor as I worked on it during university, I sent it to the healers at Hogwarts. “ That had been his first real accomplishment in the field….for his professor to have actually noticed his work and him by extension. Even during his years within the castle school itself Nigel had still remained under a cover of “Apparently it seemed to work well enough there. Though I’ve never gotten the chance to go further with it.” His classes and scrounging around for a master had taken up a lot of the free time he might have used to do just that and it hadn’t helped to have had a wrench thrown into any of the plans by his step-brother.

All Master De Savignase did in response at first was nod and make sounds of affirmation and Nigel wondered just what was going through the older man’s mind. Had he failed in the man’s estimations? Had he been taken by surprise by his apprentice’s previous actions towards advancing his career?

“C'est bon..”

Nigel turned to the man confused. His French was still on the beginners level, having essentially been dumped into it in his travelling to the world where it originated. "Excuse me sir?"

“It’s good.” the elder master clarified before finally setting the notebook in his hand back on top of its companion. “You should get back to your work,” he added turning and heading back towards the door even as Nigel nodded in agreement and moved to obey. Master had just stepped upon the bottom step before he spoke once more.

“Speak to me after repas du soir. We shall discuss you going further.” And with that he left his apprentice in shock.
