Default Camden: A Place To Call Home

Banner by MJ who is Down The Rabbit Hole

Malachi Brown is trying to settle into a new life in London after spent his entire adult life indulging his wanderlust and working his way around the globe. It seems that he may finally have to grow up though, as his teenaged daughter Esme has appeared in his life. She was rather unceremoniously dumped on him by her mother. Malachi had no idea that she existed until they arrived in his rented flat.

Now Malachi has to get used to playing by the rules; as a father, as a friend, as a division head and now as a husband. Buying a flat of his own and sharing it with new wife Frida, whom he loves dearly, might just be the first step to truly admitting that he's an adult.

Malachi Brown had spent most of the afternoon in the garden, trying to tame the wilderness that it had become. He had cut back the apple tree, mown the lawn, weeded the beds and planted some garlic ready for the next spring.

It had taken him a long time, but it was finally everything that he thought a garden should be: a productive, beautiful place to relax.

He checked his watch and gathered up his newly bought gardening tools, walking to the shed to put them away. Once they were securely locked away he walked back to his sparsely decorated flat and showered, washing his now much shorter hair. By quarter to five he was out of the shower, dressed in rather neutral outfit of a shirt and cord trousers. He put the kettle on to make a cup of tea and had one last look around the flat to make sure that it was actually tidy.

Walking down the muggle street was exactly what Frida needed. There were bykikles (bicycles), cars, and plenty of people around when she made her way towards her friends home. She breathed the fresh air and readjusted her white backpack that was slung over her right shoulder. 'It's so cute here...and busy now.'
Apparently, when Frida mentioned that she preferred 'junk clothes' she really meant it. She had on a pair of red converse sneakers and a red button down shirt. Her hair was nice-looking and her clothes were clean, but her oversized denim jeans had holes in the knees, and had to be secured with a tight belt in order to fit her.

At three after five, after getting sidetracked by a muggle boy playing with what looked like a piece of wood with wheels (skateboard), Frida managed to actually find where she was headed. 'Bet he won't expect me at the front door.' She thought and walked up to the entrance, taking in her surroundings 'Aww, such a nice garden!' She almost wandered off again, but since she was already late, there was no time to waste. Frida knocked four times and waited. Leaning against the side of the house and looked carefully at the neighboring homes and the trees nearby.

Just as the water in the kettle began to boil, there was a knock on the door. Wondering who it could be, Malachi went to answer it.

There on his door step was a very dressed down but exteremely pretty Frida. "Hello! I thought that you'd floo in. The kettle just boiled so you are right on time, come on in."

He lead the way into the kitchen. "How have you been? I've been wondering what you might bring for me to cook." He smiled, not quite able to believe that she was in his kitchen, or that he owned the kitchen she was in.

He lead the way into the kitchen. "How have you been? I've been wondering what you might bring for me to cook." He smiled, not quite able to believe that she was in his kitchen, or that he owned the kitchen she was in.
The door opened next to her and Frida smiled, though her jaw slackened just after. 'He cut his hair!' Sure that her eyes were going to give her thought away, she went along with things. "Oh goodness no. I hate the floo system." Which was true, "It charred my favorite dress when I was a child due to a malfunction."

Frida followed Malachi inside, and she noted almost everything within the man's home as she proceeded. 'Awfully clean for a guy's house.' She smirked slightly, "I've been great actually. I may have found somewhere else to live. With one of my friends from the Ministry." It wasn't final yet, but Frida was excited all the same. "And what about you? Been doing well?" Not able to help herself, Frida continued to stare at the lack of hair that Malachi now had whenever she could steal a glance.
She spotted some empty counter space and set her backpack down on top of it, then began to unpack. "I've brought you lots of fun stuff to work with." There was a smile on her face as she brought out flour, a measuring cup, eggs, minced pork and beef, mushrooms, black pepper, onion, beets, salt, and cooking wine.

"You can use whatever you want, I just wanted to make sure to give you plenty to work with...so go wild. Just let me know if you need any suggestions." Looking around some more, Frida commented, "You have such a cute little place. And a nice garden, though I didn't get to examine it much."

Malachi saw the expression on Frida's face as her eyes travelled to his hair. "Oh, it is short, isn't it? I'm not sure that I like it either, but at least I can see now." He grinned at her and was tempted to wink, but he didn't. "Charred dress? That doesn't sound too good. I can't say that I'm overly fond either. Give me apparition any day."

"Sharing with a friend? That sounds like fun." That somehow reminded him that she was a lot younger than him, again. Trying to shake that thought he focused on her. "So this friend, does she work in your department?" Okay, so that was a fairly transparent attempt to make sure that she was moving in with another woman, but he really wanted to know. He watched her unpack the bag onto the worktop. "Yup, lots of fun things to work with there. Do you want a drink first? I can offer tea, coffee, juice... I suppose it's a little early for a glass of wine?"

He started to pull things out of the cupboards; pans, oil, a red pepper, garlic and some risotto rice. He crossed to the kitchen window and picked some basil out of one of the pots. "Do you like garlic? I know that not every one does. Is risotto okay?" He smiled when she mentioned the garden. "That's why I bought it, the garden. Two bedrooms, an office and a garden that extends seventy feet." He smiled widely. "What more could anyone wish for? I thought we could eat out there? The weather's still nice and I finally tamed it out there."

She blinked, then leaned on the counter a little bit. "I never said I didn't like it. It's actually nice, I can see your face now." There was a pause, "I hope you didn't do it just for my sake."
Frida nodded, "Apparition or broom. I tend to favor flying." She gave another gentle smile, "Been fond of it since I was a kid. Do you like flying?"

She tilted her head to the right and said, "Same department, yes. Her name is Tasha. She's the Division head of Muggleworthy Excuses. So we work together a lot." Oh how she loved being able to sit next to so many other people now that the Ministry was reorganized. It reminded her of school...not that she goofed off or anything.
'Juice? I'm no baby.' She thought to herself and laughed slightly,"Sure. And it's not too early for wine. I'll take some of that if you don't mind." But then again, why would he mind? He offered it. "If you have red, then that would be perfect."

"I love garlic. Pile it on if you must. And risotto is good too, I haven't had it in ages." 'Good risotto anyway.' Frida continued to lean on the counter and watch, though she wanted to help with something. "Anything I can do? Or is this all part of being pampered?" She felt entirely useless when she wasn't moving.
"Well, it was a good purchase for sure then! I haven't seen a lot of properties around here with a garden like the one out front." Frida glanced out of a nearby window. "It's funny you mention that, because I was thinking the same thing when I walked to the door. Does anyone else help with the garden? Or is it just you?" It wasn't like Malachi could enchant a whole shed full of tools to do the work for him...not with all the muggles around.

Malachi chuckled. "I'm glad you like it, but no I didn't get it cut for you." 'Liar!' A little voice shouted in his mind. "I'm not sure if you noticed but it was getting in my eyes the other day, I kept having to push it out of the way. According to Pandora I finally look respectable and she's not sure if she can cope with that. I saw her yesterday, she had her babies. A little bit early, but they're fine. They're beautiful. Tristan and Roisin." He smiled. "I love flying, although I'm not much of a qudditch player, I have to admit. How about you?"

Malachi positively breathed a sigh of relief when Frida said that she was moving in with a woman, he couldn't help it. "Oh that sounds great. The two of you must get on well, to be moving in together. Any idea of where you're going to move to?" When she said it wasn't too early for wine, he gave her a crooked smile. "It's a good job I've had this bottle of red breathing for a few hours then." He poured out a large glass for them both, washed his hands and started to measure out the rice, putting it on to boil with the water from the kettle.

Malachi noticed how intently Frida was watching him prepare the food and so when she asked if she could help, he glanced up and said, "Well, I was going to make you sit back and relax but I don't think that would actually do you much good. You can chop the garlic if you like, or the pepper?" He started to take the skin off and then chop up an onion.

"It was a really good buy. I love these old places, high ceilings so that I don't bang my head going through the door. Esme doesn't have that problem, being five feet two." He chuckled, "I swear if she wasn't the double of my sister I would have doubted that she was mine." 'Oh nice one genius! Now you're going to have to explain.' He carried on chopping up the onion, praying that Frida wouldn't ask about Kitty.

"Yeah, the neighbours kept the little bit at the front tidy for the sake of their own house prices but the back... wow, it was a jungle. Just mudane plants thankfully, easy to deal with. I've been here what, five weeks? I've worked on it everyday for at least two hours. Some sneaky magic here and there of course. I wouldn't have wanted to have to call you over early for professional purposes." And then he couldn't help it, he winked at her.

"I noticed, yes." Frida said with a tiny smile and moved her shoulders a little, still keen on doing something. "Tristan and Roisin." She repeated to herself, 'Precious.' "Well, thank God that they are healthy. That's all anyone could ask for." It was sincere, but almost hollow in a strange way. Frida sighed deeply and went on, wanting to leave the topic of babies behind as quickly as possible. "I played on the Slytherin team at Hogwarts. I was one of the beaters. Managed to become captain my last three years." She loved talking about her days of Quidditch.
Something was brought to her attention, "You never tried out for the Gryffindor team did you?" She tried to remember being a third year and sneaking a look at some recruits, "When did you graduate from Hogwarts?" There had been a Brown trying out for Chaser back then. 'Maybe that's when he discovered Quidditch wasn't for him?'

"No idea." Frida started to laugh, "We both just started talking about moving, and she offered a chance for me to live where she is now."
She could only stare at him, "You're a brat." Frida said and slapped him roughly on the arm in good humor, though it didn't stop her from taking a glass for herself. She sipped it and continued to watch...while almost commenting on how Malachi should wash his hands.

"Okay then." She stepped away from the counter she had been leaning against, placed her glass down and took out her wand. With a flick of her wrist, some sort of steamy mist washed over both her hands, cleaning them instantly, and without even leaving them wet.
Frida grabbed some garlic and a smaller kitchen knife, then crushed the clove with the side.

"Makes the whole place seem even larger too." Frida laughed again, "Aww, poor dear...she's so little." 'Even if being shorter does eliminate the risk of a cracked skull.' She peeled the skin away from the crushed garlic then looked to her left to Malachi, "You have a sister?" Frida asked kindly, "Is she older or younger?"

"Only for five weeks? And you've gotten all that done? Wow, nice work." She finished crushing and peeling garlic and cleaned her hands again.
*Fwoom* There she went again, candied apple red. "I suppose that's right. Even if it would have been good practice for careful wandwork." Frida had started to stare down at her almost non-existant work, hands shaking slightly. She picked up her drink and took another sip.

Babies were evidently a touchy subject, so they moved on to his touchy subject instead. "Ah, good for you. I tried out when I was in my third year. I took a bludger to the head and fell twelve feet. I had a cracked skull, a broken arm and a broken collar bone. That sort of quashed my ambitions to be a professional quidditch player. I left Hogwarts in 2034. I didn't get to stay for any ceremonies, I was asked to leave the day after my final NEWT exam." He avoided her eye and carried on chopping. Which has got to make me ten years older than you.

He smiled at her when she said she had no idea if she and the other woman got on. "Jumping with both feet then? Excellent." When she hit him, he adopted a mock wounded expression. "Ow! Beater was certainly the right position for you eh?" He chuckled and took a sip of the wine for himself.

"I love this place already. It feels like we're supposed to be here, as though this is where my feet were always leading me." The back of his neck itched but he didn't scratch it, just sort of jiggled his shoulders. "She is tiny but she wears the most enormous heels I think I've ever seen. They make her almost average height." When Frida asked about Kitty, Malachi swallowed and collected all the ingredients, lighting the stove so that he could brown the meat and vegetables. Avoiding her eye, he started adding things to the pan; first oil and then the meat. "Kitty was my younger sister. After I was cut off, disowened, whatever you want to call it, she wasn't allow to come and see me. When she was fifteen, she got an acute case of dragon pox. She wrote to me, begging me to go and see her, but by the time I got back to England from Canada, it was too late. I wasn't welcome at the funeral." He stirred the contents of the pan, trying not to cry or look at Frida. "I've never forgiven myself." He cleared his throat and looked around for his wine glass, spotting it on the other worktop and grabbing it, taking a generous sip.

When things were ready, Malachi drained the rice and added it to the skillet, allowing the risotto to sit for a few minutes after he had added Parmesan cheese. He sent the chopping board and knives to the sink with his wands, where they started to wash themselves up. He got some plates, cast a warming charm on them and dished up the risotto. As he grabbed the cutlery form the draw, he asked distractedly, "Can you take the wine out please?" He finally looked at her again and realised that his wink had caused her to blush. His breath caught in his throat again. He swallowed "You really are very beautiful." His voice was quiet and steady.

Frida's eyes widened in shock, "All that from a tryout?" 'Phew! Good thing he stopped early, or there would be nothing left to him.' She did some brief mental math, then gave a short burst of laughter. "HA! No wonder I've been so confused!" Frida shook her head, "Here I am for the past few weeks thinking you left while I was at school." Her laughter stopped though, "Why did they ask you to leave?" That didn't seem right!

"Yeah, well. I suppose it'll work out. And if it doesn't then I'll find somewhere else." 'But I'm not living with family. Gah!' She smirked to herself, "So I've been told." Frida said and had to resist the urge to hit him again. It would have knocked the drink everywhere.

"Must be talented if she wears heels like that." Frida said and sipped her drink, "I'm always the one tripping and falling. Guess I owe my balancing skills to being a tomboy growing up." She rolled her eyes. Yep. Always falling over, and usually into something.
"Oh no." Frida said in a whisper, "Malachi-" 'All that time talking about Calvin...' "I'm so sorry." She placed her left hand on the man's shoulder. It was so sad. And at fifteen! "You know that she loves you though." Frida said sweetly into Malachi's ear. "And you love her, too. She knows that." She just wanted to hug him, knowing how painful it must be...even if it was certainly under different circumstances.

"Sure I can." Frida agreed and took the drink, as well as whatever else she could get her hands on that she might need. She flicked her wand and the counterspace and stove was cleaned off.
Frida stopped dead in her tracks, realizing that her shoulders were trembling a little too now. "Oh...erm." Her voice was almost gone for a moment, "Thank you, that's sweet. And you're quite handsome." She smiled at Malachi, hoping that her face wasn't red anymore, even if she could still feel it.
He had caught her off-guard. Why did they always seem to do that?

Malachi nodded. "Just one tryout. The bludger seemed to be magnetically drawn to me. It came out of the crate and smack! I was out cold." He watched her work out the difference in their ages. "Yes... I think I must have graduated before you went shopping for your wand." He chuckled. "I've been blessed with a 'baby face', always looking younger than I am. I have to say it's got me in as much trouble as it has saved me from." He sighed and ran his hand over his face. "There was... an incident. I took the blame, since it was the gentlemanly thing to do." His ears burned with the memory of the row it had caused with his father.

"That's the way to approach it I think. Too many people see their current situation as the only option, instead of it being just one of the options." He thought that she might hit him again, from the look on her face, but he was relieved when she didn't.

"She casts cushioning charms insided her shoes, so that they don't hurt. She's..." He wasn't sure how to describe Esme. "Everyday she does something unexpected. She certainly makes things interesting."

Malachi felt the warmth and pressure of Frida's hand on his shoulder, but he didn't say anything. His throat was dry and he was concentrating on making sure that the risotto didn't go lumpy. When Frida talked about Kitty loving him, he gulped. He didn't know that, he had no way of knowing that and in his low moments it was a stick he liked to beat himself with. That was why he didn't allow himself to feel that way very often.

Malachi stopped when Frida did, a little concerned that he had said far too much, far too soon. However, she seem to take it well. When she complimented him, it was his turn to blush a little. "Thank you. I... umm, didn't expect you to say that."

He led her through into the sitting room and flicked his wand at the bi-fold doors. They opened and it felt as though the room and the garden were one. "This way," Malachi said with a smile. He led the way through the garden, under the arch where the peas grew overhead. At the end of the garden was a small paved clearing with a table and chairs, surrounded by plants in pots. If it weren't for the sounds of the city that could be heard every now and then, they could have been in a country garden. He put the plates down and pulled out a chair for her.

"Could have been worse though." She said about the bludger, "Could have broken your neck."
With a simple, "Eh." And wave of her hand, Frida brushed away the age thing. Really. Who was she to care?
Frida couldn't help but laugh before she commented on Malachi's appearance. "You're rather lucky with that." Frida sipped her wine, with some difficulty, since she was carrying a few other things. "My father has the same sort of face. I expect my mother secretly hates him for it, but I can never tell." But nowadays especially, it seemed age was finally catching up to poor Paul.
'An incident, hm?' Frida noticed that Malachi's ears had reddened, she raised a brow "At least you owned up to whatever it was. Might as well act responsible."

"Yeah, and who knows-" She started to say and eyed her drink again, "Maybe everything happens for a reason after all." Frida wasn't a real big believer in fate, but sometimes it was very scary how things turned out.

"That's a really good idea." 'Why didn't I think of that?' "Sounds like she has a good head on her shoulders. I expect that she is fairly independent?" Frida finally gave in and sipped her drink again. 'Must have been somewhat of a terror when she was very young though.'

Frida waited patiently, not moving from the man's side until he responded again, wanting to make sure that he was okay. It didn't seem right if she were to leave.
She gave a smile, "Well, what did you expect me to say?" Her right eyebrow raised. "That you're a foul, monstrous ogre?" She chuckled to herself and followed.

"This is so dang cute! I think you really did find the Holy Grail during your property hunt." Frida said as she made her way after Malachi. "I was wondering if you grew any produce in here." Frida half-whispered as she looked up and saw a bunch of peas over her head.
She set down the drinks and turned her head enough to see what Malachi was doing. "You're such a gentleman." Frida said and took a seat, then brought her legs underneath her so that she sat cross-legged. She used a quick spell to get rid of whatever dirt was on the bottom of her shoes.
It was different hearing the sounds of civilization around her; cars, and a yell from someone every so often. She wasn't used to it
Not wanting to feel rude herself, she gave her wand another flick from under the table, and the chair opposite her moved back from the table a few inches. Enough for Malachi to fit through.

Malachi just smiled a little when she said he could have broken his neck. He was very surpeised to walk away from the bludger incident, but it wasn't something he'd thought about in a very long time. His smile widened when she brushed the age difference away. He had no idea where they were headed, but that was one of the obstacles he had thought about knocked down. That was good.
"Apparently it happens with a lot of men, they look young and then age well. Not that I deserve to. Too much sun and not enough sunscreen." When she said that he had done the right thing, he just nodded, keen to drop the subject.

"I've never been one to believe in fate but I think there are some quirks in the way life works out now." Malachi couldn't quite believe those words had come out of his own mouth... but it was true.

"Esme's very independent. It worries me sometimes. She's got this thing into her head about not being a victim, not depending on or trusting anyone fully. She's reckless sometimes too. Thankfully though, she can look after herself. She's very skilled with defensive magic. I just have to hope that her mouth doesn't get her into trouble." He sighed and frowned, contemplating what he would have to do if Esme was ever kicked out of Hogwarts.

Malachi laughed uneasily. "Well, perhaps not a foul, monsterous ogre. But..." He tilted his head to one side and surveyed her, "Well, I don't know what I expected." You to tell me to get lost mainly.

As they walked through the garden, Malachi felt more comfortable. "Well, it had a lot of problems that would have been really expensive to fix without magic, so it wasn't desirable to a muggle buyer. I think the estate agent thought that I'd lost my mind when I paid for it in cash." The flat had wiped out his savings, but it was better than asking your fifteen year old for money. Living frugally had finally paid off for him.

"The planting isn't mine really, it was here already, just really over-grown. I would have done something similar though. An edible garden." He smiled and took a sip of his wine. "It's something I've always wanted." When she pushed the chair out, he grinned. "I really like your approach to life. Always equal." He sat down and topped up their glasses. He lifted his glass in a toast; "I know it's a little late since we've already drunk a little but i don't think it will hurt. Here's to... Sunny Saturday afternoons. May there be many more of them."

"I wouldn't worry too much about it." Frida said and relaxed some more in her seat, leaning her elbows on the table. "In fact, I think it's smart to live that way." She sipped her drink. If you'd have mentioned that to her months ago, she never would have agreed. "You can't get very far in life if you trust another individual completely. And you certainly can't rely on just anybody either." Humans tended to be flighty as far as Frida was concerned. "Just never know when it might do you in." 'Ain't that the truth.'
Malachi's next comment really caught her attention. "You think she'd be interested in attending special academies during the summer months?" She rested her chin in her hand. "I attended one in Colorado while I was still at school...for dueling. They teach you a lot there. And since Esme seems to be intrigued with it, it might be a good idea."

She rolled her eyes, "Stop being silly. I wouldn't have said anything mean...and you know it." Frida couldn't help but laugh a little.

Her eyes widened. What Malachi just said was pure gold. Literally. "Know what? You just gave me an idea!" She took a rather large drink of her wine. 'Why hadn't anyone done this before?!' "I-erm, or you, could totally make a fortune buying muggle homes, using mostly magic to repair them, and then sell them again." If she hadn't started to stare at her food hungrily, she probably would have hyperventilated.

"Hm. Well if you'd like more let me know. My aunt Olivia has her own garden, and a ton of seeds that she may never get around to planting. I'll gladly ask her for whatever type you want to grow." She sipped her wine again, "Your work was well worth it." Frida turned to look around the property, her ears taking in the sounds of the busy streets that were not too far away. 'It's so different.' She thought with a sigh and closed her eyes for a brief moment.
The woman couldn't help but smile a little bit as she looked back to Malachi, "I treat you the way you treat me. And the way I would want to be treated." Now she could definitely smell the food, and her stomach rumbled. 'Only had toast today...bleh.' "Thanks." She said and raised her glass along with him, "Agreed." Frida looked down at her plate, "Can we eat now? I'm starving." She gave an awkward smile, almost like it was embarrassing for her to be hungry.

Just before Frida could pick up her fork, she heard what sounded like some sort of siren off in the distance. Her mind immediately thought about the muggle city. "Is it a lot of fun living so close to muggles?"
Seemed like it would be. Must have been plenty to do with any spare time.

Malachi nodded in agreement. "I can see your point, but I think that you have to be careful that you don't end up isolating yourself from everyone. I imagine that could be very lonely." There was a note of regret in his voice which might have suggested the he didn't need to imagine.

Malachi sighed. "I'm not sure that's a good idea. Not for her at least. Beauxbaton's kicked her out for "unladylike and combative behaviour". What is Merlin's name that means, I don't know. They wouldn't tell her mother and Esme is tight lipped on the subject. If she was to go abroad... She might just vanish. She knows I can find her here... but abroad," He shook his head. "Perhaps if she manages to prove herself to be trust worthy this year." He blinked rapidly, realisng that he actually sounded like someone's father. That's... weird...

He looked a little sheepish, because he felt exteremely so. "Well, I may know it... that doesn't mean I don't fear a different reaction." Apart from the pair of them having their hands full, he had again wanted to kiss her at that moment. He suspected that if he had, she might have slapped him. Or hexed him.

Malachi considered the idea. "That makes sense. You'd have to check what the rules are... find the capital to start off with and some muggle tradesmen you could work with... but it does sound like a good idea." Malachi had never wanted to be rich. His parents were wealthy but he had become used to his frugal lifestyle. "I'm happy with my lot though, I've got a secure roof, a job, family and," He looked into her eyes over his wine glass, "Good friends. What else could I possibly need?"

He nodded enthusiastically. "Oh, I'll take anything that's going begging. I'm sure that I'll get gluts of things. I have a feeling I'm going to have to get good at pickles and preserves. If not, I shall be sharing the fruits of my labour." He grinned, subconsiously scratching his scarred elbow through the sleeve of his shirt. "I was considering getting a couple of chickens. They're not much work..." He wondered vaguely if all the talk of self-sufficiency was making him sound like an old duffer.

'Blimey, she's pretty when she smiles!'Malachi returned her smile. "I treat you how you deserve to be treated; like a lady." The gryffindor within had risen to the surface. "I enjoy your company and I respect you." He said quietly. His attempt to imply that they might see more of each other seemed to have fallen flat. He took a sip of wine. "Yes, yes. Let's eat." He took a mouthful of the food but he couldn't really taste it, he was too concerned with Frida's reaction.

Malachi chuckled. "It is great. There's always something to do in the evening, which is means you can never be bored. What I really love is the fact they ignore each other, which means they ignore any signs of magic, unless it's so obvious that they can't possibly ignore it. Cultural variety and anonymity, just the way I like it." Casper, the whippet who belonged to Pandora and Ronan came out into the garden and sought them out, putting his head in Malachi's lap. "Hello Casper." He stroked the whippet's head. The dog glanced at Frida and then curled up at Malachi's feet. "I'm a little worried that he's not going to want to go home."

"That's what animals are for." Frida said before she could stop herself. She coughed slightly on her drink and cleared her throat. 'Coming from the lady who has eight animals.' "At least they don't backstab you." She smiled slightly and laid a napkin over her lap; which was somewhat difficult, seeing as how her legs were still tucked underneath her.

Frida raised her right brow again, "You think I was a complete lady when I was growing up?" She scoffed a tiny bit, "It's fun there, but they don't let you get away with anything." She could feel herself begining to salivate, the food was really getting to her. "But if you're really that worried, then I suppose it's not time for something like that yet." Worried might not have been the best word. Concerned more like it.
"That's a good way to go about it." Frida agreed, sipping her wine.

"So you're saying that you agree that you already know me enough to know what I'm going to say?" She said in a rather stern voice with narrowed eyes. However, her expression softened and she let out a small laugh. "I'm just messing with you." She finally picked up her eating utensil, "Don't be afraid. I told you so before, I'm an easygoing person and I like you." Frida shrugged, "Doesn't that put your mind at ease?"

Frida ate her first mouthful of food, which only made her even more hungry. "Capital?" There was a capital? "I think I'll buy a small property this week...see how that turns out. Trial and error." 'Hmm...'
She smiled easily, "I can see why. And yes. The only other things a person could ask for is good health, and a nice set of teeth." Yep. "But you already seem to have those too."

"Maybe I'll buy you a book on preserving." She ate another forkfull of food. It was surprising to her, but Malachi was a pretty decent cook. "You'll be sharing with me of course?" Frida added with a pouty face. "If you do get chickens, you'll have to pen them up. The little buggers would peck at everything you'd have growing." 'Just like crows. They would peck each apple in the apple tree and not do a darn thing with them.'

"Aww, thanks!" It was nice to hear manners from at least one person today. "I enjoy your company too. If I didn't then I wouldn't be here." She didn't need any invitation to eat, since she had beaten Malachi to it. "You know. At first I didn't have much faith in you." Frida swallowed her mouthful, "But you're a pretty good cook."

"Like the cinema right?" She said eagerly. "You said we would go, so maybe later?" Frida of course didn't know where it was, or how late it was open until. She laughed, "Makes a perfect little getaway for wizards then if they ignore so much." 'How could a person live that way? Not be interested in what was going on around them...?'
'Eeee!' Her eyes lit up at the sight of the animal, "He's so well behaved." She commented when the dog made no attempt to jump up for anything, "Well, if you spoil him like you do me, no wonder he doesn't want to leave." Frida looked down at the dog and said sweetly, "Hello, Casper. You're a handsome fellow aren't you?" She let her left hand fall to her side in case the whippet wanted to smell her.

"You may have a point there, animals are far easier to understand than people." He took a sip of his wine. "But they can't love you in the same way that another person can."

"The unladylike bit doesn't really worry me because from what I've seen she's very ladylike. She doesn't walk anywhere, she sashays." He chuckled. "I think it has something to do with a boy to be honest, so I doubt that she'll ever tell me about it." He itched the back of his neck. "I'll talk to her about Colorado at Christmas."

When she narrowed her eyes at him, he was flustered. "I-I-I didn't mean it like that!" Of course, she was joking. Malachi blushed. "I'm glad..." He took a gulp of wine. "because I like you too." He blushed deeper, wondering how she managed to cut through his charm like that. He just couldn't have that layer of defence around her.

"Yeah, capital, y'know, the money that you're investing in the property. I think that's what it's called." Malachi put his glass down and looked at her with mild surprise. "You'll buy a small property... just buy one? Just like that? Wow... I thought I was spontanious!" He was very impressed that Frida would just jump with both feet like that. It somehow made her more attractive. "What about the finaces though? This place wiped me out, I would still be renting if it weren't for my Division Head salary." He itched his scar, again without realising. A thought came to him. "I'm sorry, that was a rather intrusive question, you don't have to answer it if it makes you uncomfortable."

"You don't have to buy me anything." Malachi told her mildly. He didn't want Frida to see him as a charity case. "Of course I was planning to share with you. In fact I have some shallots and some French beans in the house for you." He smiled. "Yeah, they are rather pecky, buy I suppose they'll deal with the grubs I don't want eating the veggies. I found some fox tracks the other day, so they'd need protecting too."

"Thank you." He smiled and stayed quiet when she told him she liked him too. He focused on eating, not trusting himself to say anything that wasn't monumentally stupid.

"Mmm, yeah. They're having a retrospective season. There's Perfume: The story of a muderer, which sounds rather graphic; Bright Star, that's about Keats; The Tempest, that's Shakespeare; Gigantic, that sounds like a comedy but I'm not sure, Five Hundred Days Of Summer, which is a comedy about a relationship breaking up and... The Happening, which is a horror film. Those are the ones I can remember anyway. I'll leave the choice up to you." He eat a little more risotto and then said, "I think that wizards might stand out in other parts of London, where they take a little more notice, but you're right." When Casper got up lazily to sniff and then timidly lick at Frida's hand, Malachi gave her a crooked grin. "Oh this hardly counts as spoiling you, you brought the ingredients!"

She didn't say anything right away, but rather bit the inside of her cheek. "I guess that's true." For barely any reason, Frida felt her blood begin to boil. But she ignored it.

Frida laughed and repeated. "She sashays...lovely." She sipped her drink and took a deep breath, raising her eyebrows. "Oh dear. What are you going to do if it is because of a boy? Ohhh! And what'll you do when she gets her first boyfriend?" That would be very awkward from what Frida could imagine. Fathers always seemed to be on pins and needles when that topic came up.
The woman nodded in agreement, "If you want more information, then I'll be glad to write everything down for you. I'll put in a good word for her too."

'HA!' She smiled to herself and ate and drank some more. If it wasn't so cute when Malachi blushed, then she wouldn't have frightened him at all.

'Why would they have a capital? Ehhhh...' "Mhm." She nodded and sipped her wine, "Just a small one." Frida measured out about an inch of space between her index and thumb, "Doesn't bother me." Frida said and took a bite of food. "I'm doing okay with finances now. And how much should a tiny, fixer-upper cost anyway? Not too much if nobody wants it. And repairs shouldn't be bad either."

"I know I don't have to. But what if I want to?" She smirked, there was usually always a loophole of sorts. "What if you just happen to look in your bookshelf one day and it happens to be there? You wouldn't be mad at me. And I would never fess-up to it." Frida finally decided to sit like a normal person...with her feet on the floor/ground. "Good. Then we'll trade the book for the produce." Her eyes widened a little bit again, "Fox tracks? In a place like this?" Well it did make sense. Plenty of hiding places, and food to scrounge up. "Maybe a few protective charms around the property will do? Or perhaps you could set a live trap, catch the fox, and let me deal with it." She had no intenetion of hurting the little guy...or girl.

"You're very welcome." Frida smiled back and she too focused on finishing what was on her plate...and in her glass.

As she listened to what the cinema had, her jaw loosened and started to hang slightly. "I don't-" Frida started to say while biting her lip, "I'm not sure what those are." Her face reddened. No matter of explaining could do much good until she actually saw one with her own eyes. 'And what is a Shakespeare?' "Nothing scary though. Just something fun." She stared to swirl her wine around in it's glass. "Maybe you should pick instead? That might be safer."
Frida nodded in agreement, but started to pay more attention to Casper and speak to him with a very sweet and almost airy voice. "Hey there. Chin up little guy." She rubbed the dog gently underneath his jaw and then behind his ears, "Does Malachi spoil you? Yes he does..."
She spoke in her normal tone of voice, "If this isn't spoiling then I don't know what is." Frida looked up from Casper, "I didn't do any of the work though." 'Not really.' "And I didn't clean up my house for your sake, and I didn't cut my hair. That was all you, not me." She gave a rather pleasant smile, "But thank you. I appreciate it."

Malachi sensed that he had said the wrong thing, especially as Frida seemed to be chewing on the inside of her mouth. He didn't say anything else and instead took a sip of wine.

Malachi laughed along with Frida. "It's this 'Attend me everyone, I have arrived' thing that she has." When Frida said the word 'boyfriend', Malachi gave her a mock wounded look and clapped his hand over his heart. "Oh don't!" he cried, a trace of laughter in his voice, "Most fathers have years to get used to that idea. She arrived on my doorstep, all pouty lips and heels. She's already a young woman. I just have to accept the fact that my hating any boyfriend she has will cause her to be crazier about him than she otherwise would have been." He avoided the word love this time, since it had upset Frida so much last time. "If you write it down for me, that would be great, but I'd like to talk to her first. I can't imagine that she wouldn't be enthusiastic about going though."

"Just a tiny one?" He copied her hand gesture, giving her a cheeky grin. "I suppose a little one wouldn't hurt." He was impressed by her fearlessness. "Just make sure you slip the tradesmen a little truth serum, they have a reputation for bending the truth. Not all of them are like that, but you can't be too careful."

"The book for the produce." He grinned and topped up their wine glasses. "That sounds like a good trade." Her reaction to the fox was a little surprising, but he reflected that nothing about her should surprise him. "I'll try out the charms before I buy the chickens, see if they work. If not, he's yours."

"You don't... oh, well I think that we should probably go and see what else is on and then decide." Malachi ate a little more of his meal and the tutor within formulated a plan...

He watched as she talked to Casper, his head tilted to one side. Frida's sweet tone was so very adorable and Malachi smiled softly, watching as she stroked the whippet. Casper licked at her fingers happily. When Frida insisted that he was spoiling her, he chuckled a little and shook his head. "No, honestly. If that's you're idea of me spoiling you if I ever got the chance to do it properly, you might be overwhelmed." His eyes twinkled with mischief as he said this, knowing that she might well be intrigued. Malachi wasn't sure where they headed, but he hoped they were headed towards him having the chance to spoil her.

Frida laughed a bit, and sipped her wine when she stopped. "Yes, well, it's only a matter of time after all." But that made her think back to her years in school. 'I think I was fifteen too. Hmm.' "Hopefully your hating him will make her a little more cautious." 'Can't trust boys for a second.' Frida sipped her wine again. "But not all girls are like that, so you might get off lucky."
She nodded, "Well, whenever you want it. You can always stop by my level of work and get it if you wish. Or I'll send it by owl. Or whatever," She gave a wave of her hand, "there's plenty of time, and if I write it down for you now, you might misplace it."

"Yes, Malachi. A tiny one." She rolled her eyes good-naturedly, "Just a tester. To see how things work." Frida blinked, "A truth serum? Wouldn't that be a little risky?" She raised her right eyebrow again and smirked. "I could get into big trouble with the Ministry if they find out." Frida swirled her wine around in it's glass. "Do you know of any honest, reliable ones?"

'Thank goodness.' "Thanks."She was about to reach for more drink when her glass was topped off. A strange sort of smile appeared on her face, almost like an animal's grin, "I've already got some muggle catch and release cages. I'll bring them over if you need them. My uncle Noah collects strange stuff like that." Frida sipped her wine, wondering whether or not the fox would cause too much trouble or not. They were crafty little things.

"Then we can go?" Frida asked with bright eyes, "Right after this?" She ate one of her last forkfuls of food.

Frida gave in and finally picked the whippet up, and set him down on her lap with a quiet *Oof*. She stroked his short fur and smiled pleasantly. "You're such a sweetie..." Frida continued to speak quietly to Casper, before listening to what Malachi was saying.
"Well, wha-?" She started to say before being cut off by another strange sound in the distance. "I'm not one to be overwhelmed." Frida said and continued to pat Casper on the head in an almost mechanical fashion. "And if it requires spending lots of gold, then I'm not very well for it." She could feel her face redden again, but concentrated on the animal in her lap until it cooled down. At least she had some sort of a distraction.
"Besides," Frida started before taking a sip of her wine again, "I'm not one who likes to be too spoiled either. I like working for what I get." She scratched Casper behind the ear while looking down at him, avoiding Malachi's eyes. "I don't like feeling like a freeloader, or a leech." Frida bit her lip.

Malachi closed his eyes for a second. "I was hoping to avoid all that horomones and boys stuff for a while, but things just don't work like that, do they?" He watched her sip her wine and then nodded. "She's... sensibly reckless." He chuckled at his own oxymoron. "I think that's possible..." He laughed again, realising that Esme had probably inherited that trait from him...

"I'll come and get those details from you at work when I've got my office a little more sorted. Twenty years of following your feet shouldn't leave a person with so much paperwork but that room is... out of control. I just closed the door on it." He looked at her and smiled, wondering if he was confirming what she had thought about him dashing around, tidying up before she arrived. In truth he had closed that door a few days before to concentrate on the garden.

Malachi chuckled when she rolled her eyes at him. "So long as it's only a little one." When she blinked, he realised that she probably wasn't one for bending the rules. "I suppose you could get in trouble if they found out." He gave her a wry smile. "I do know a few, but it depends where you plan to buy. They don't travel as easily as we do." He took another sip of wine.

Frida's reaction to the fox was intriguing, she seemed to truely be a country girl and not afraid to deal with a problem animal at all. Malachi sipped his wine. "Pandora's father had all that sort of stuff, but I'm not sure what happened to it, so if the charms don't work, he's yours." That's great, repeat yourself. Excellent, she will think you are a fool! Malachi berated himself a little and bit his lip before taking another large drink of wine, blushing a little.

Malachi finished his meal. "Yes we can go now." He watched, smiling as she made a fuss of Casper. "Well, you didn't spend any money to lift Casper up like that but I'll bet he feels like the luckiest dog in London right now." As though he was confirming Malachi's words, Caspers licked at Frida's hand happily and wagged his tail. "My version on spoiling doesn't involve spending lots of money because I've never had very much before." That was a rather baldly honest way of putting things but it was the truth. Since the day his father had cut him off Malachi had lived largely by his wits and had saved his gold very carefully. "I've had to earn everything I've ever had, materially speaking, so I know exactly what you mean." He drained his glass. "I'm ready when you are, I just need to grab something as we go through the house." He smiled at her.

"Can't have avoided it forever." Frida took a larger drink of her wine, but blinked when she felt a rush of warmth. 'Sensibly reckless.' She chuckled along with Malachi and smirked.

Just as she was taking a sip, Frida nearly spat it out as she began to laugh. She managed to hold most of it back, but a drop landed on Casper's head through the woman's hands that covered her mouth. "Oh...my gosh." She started laughing so hard it was difficult to breath. Frida could see her library after her owls had an argument in it. Papers flying everywhere. She was comparing it to Malachi's office, which must have been full of documents...all scattered about. And Malachi, closing the door forcing the papers inside the room. "Out of control!" 'Great! A giggle fit!'
She hugged her stomach and waited until more oxygen could enter her lungs. "I'm sorry...ohhh..." It was painful. Frida wiped a tear from her right eye and looked at Casper, who seemed to have been caught off guard. "Sorry to you too."

"Don't worry. I'm sure I'll know what I'm doing." Frida finished off her glass of wine. "Well, I doubt they will. But you never know." She gave a shrug and started to pet Casper again. "Just don't rat me out okay?" Frida glanced up to Malachi with one of her eyes narrowed again. "You'll have to give me their names, I could always use more connections."

"Think she'd like some of my uncles old cages? He doesn't dabble with them too much anymore." She started to lift Casper's paws like he was dancing, and giggled slightly.

'Go? We can go? Now!?' She looked up with wide eyes. "Really?" Frida gaped at Malachi. She had assumed that the man was merely making conversation. Not expecting that he was dead serious about going that same day. "That's fantastic." Frida reached for her wine glass again, but realized that she had finished the contents earlier.
"Lucky dog eh?" Frida stroked the dog's short fur. "Just don't expect me to be picking you up any time soon." She said to Malachi with a smart look.
"That's a good way to live though." Frida agreed when Malachi mentioned working, "My parents raised me and-" She paused, "Raised me that way." Again, she reached for her glass, but stopped herself in time. It had become a sort of habit to reach out and take a sip every so often. "Well I'm ready!" Frida gave Casper a small peck of a kiss on his head and placed him on the ground. "Is it a photograph?" She guessed at what Malachi needed to get from the house.

Malachi nodded in agreement. He regretted not having any contact with Esme, even though in reality, it wasn’t his fault. He was distracted from his regret by Frida’s chuckle. It was a sound that seemed to warm him through to his bones.

Malachi watched has Frida half choked, trying not to spray her wine all over him. “Are you okay?” He watched as she dissolved into a fit of giggles about the state of his office. He waited for her to calm down a little. “It’s really not that bad.” He said quietly, chuckling along with her. Casper gave a little ‘yip’, as though he wanted to join in. “Don’t be sorry, it’s good to see you laugh.” He held back the compliment that was on the tip of his tongue: ‘You look so beautiful right now’, not wanting to risk overwhelming her.

Malachi grinned. “Oh, I wouldn’t want to underestimate you.” He had a feeling that underestimating Frida would be a very unwise move to make. “Rat you out?” He laughed at the thought of him being the one to report someone else’s flexing of the rules. “Now what sort of person would I be to set you up like that?” He arched an eyebrow. “Besides, I can see you letting me take you to see the comedy show in Hyde Park if I reported you.” He grinned at her, showing that he thought the whole idea was quite funny. “I’ve got the business cards from the builder in the house.”

“I think Pandora would like that.” Malachi nodded when Frida offered the cages. “She finds muggle things funny.” He chuckled as Frida made Casper ‘dance’. “He’ll want to go home with you and then I’ll be in the dog house for letting him fall in love with you!” He suddenly felt uncomfortable and coughed.

When a look of surprise spread over Frida’s face, he grinned again. “Yes, really.” He watched her lavish attention on Casper, who seemed very content. “You pick me up? No, no.” He blushed a little, his train of thought now dashing somewhere that he wished it wouldn’t. “I don’t expect you to pick me up.” An image of him sweeping her off her feet flashed large in his mind and in trying to push away how happy they both looked, he missed the hesitancy in her voice. Casper’s little yip of protest at being put down punctured his reverie and Malachi smiled automatically, gathering the plates and glasses and standing up. He wondered, as he led the way back to the house, why he was acting like a drippy teen. It was almost as though Frida had some defense against his charm and so he was rendered without it. “Oh yes, the photographs.” He pulled open the door. “The album is on the coffee table, I’ll be back in a minute.” He indicated a large black leather photograph album that was open to a page of fire crabs. He walked into the kitchen and put the plates in the sink, setting them to wash themselves. Malachi quickly apparated up to his bedroom and took down a book from the shelf. He reached into the draw by the bed and grabbed a quill, writing something on the first page of the book. He apparated back to the kitchen and put the the book in on the worktop. Smiling he walked back into the sitting room.

"Oh yes, I'm okay." Frida said as a drop started to slide down the side of her mouth. 'Ugh!' She wiped it away hastily with the palm of her hand. "I haven't done that in a while. So it was a nice change." She dabbed Casper's head where the wine had landed on him with a napkin. "Casper, you're starting to look like a dalmatian, hun." Apparently, Frida had managed to drip more than once onto the dog's head. It was nothing a little sneaky magic couldn't fix though, she charmed the napkin underneath the table and was able to remove the wine quite easily.

"I wouldn't want you to underestimate me either." Frida said while giving a rather devilish smirk. "I never underestimate anyone, it's not safe. Never know what they could be hiding."
She raised both her eyebrows and mouthed the words, "Hyde Park?" Frida decided to leave it though and shook her head, not wanting to bother Malachi with too many questions. "You'd take me because I would have needed a laugh after crying so much." She gave one loud burst of laughter and scratched Casper behind the ear. "Thanks."

"Then the next time I visit I'll bring over a couple of them so you can give them to her. All they do is take up space where they are now." She gave a shrug and secretly wondered if she should start messing around with muggle stuff too.
"Is that true?" Frida asked as though talking to a small child, "You'd like to come back with me?" She gave Casper a pat on the chest. "I don't think I'd trust my cats around you, they'd beat you up...especially Bogey." Frida grinned and looked to Malachi, "Bogey is my siamese...my attack cat. Loves me to bits and doesn't like to share." Her mind flashed to a time, months and months ago when Blaze first visited. 'Poor soul.' It was pretty bad at the time, but now Frida could laugh about it somewhat.

"Hey." Frida said to Malachi as he seemed to wander off to the house without her. She did a double-take and grabbed the empty bottle of wine and followed, "Don't leave me all alone." Frida said to him as she caught up and gave the man a sideways look. Curse her for being so busy paying attention to Casper.
She brightened up again once they reached the door, "K." Frida said with a smile and placed the empty bottle on the kitchen counter before going to the sitting room. 'This thing is ginormous!' She thought when she caught sight of the album. 'Must've been everywhere...twice.'
Frida took a seat and pulled the album closer to her. They were odd looking things, fire-crabs, all bulky and...weird. Though the shell was rather beautiful. Frida watched the photographs move slowly, glancing up at Malachi when he walked in. "Got what you needed?"
