Default Noltie's Botanical Novelties

Noltie's Botanical Novelties is a peculiar little shop which looks as though humanity has abandoned it entirely and nature is trying its best to take over. While the storefront is similar in appearance to the stores on either side, tendrils of plants have broken through and weaved in and out of the brickwork and there are strange and beautiful flowers seemingly growing right out of the mortar.

Inside the store its generally humid like a greenhouse and it smells fresh and loamy - definitely heaven for anyone with the proverbial green thumb. The plants are organised by their geographic origins, and as you approach certain areas you might notice temperature changes and weather charms expertly in place to best serve the plants in question.

Noltie's prides itself on acquiring and stocking only the best magical and mundane herbology supplies. Even those plants which are not on the permanent inventory can be acquired on request, so too can almost any non-magical plant, for a price. Nothing illegal is stocked here. Noltie's will not sell dangerous plants to minors, or anything that requires a license without the appropriate paperwork, everything in this store is above board, though we have heard there is a shop in Knockturn Alley that takes care of that sort of thing...

It was nonsensical to the former Wampus - though she had been told that where she a Hogwarts student she would have been a Slytherin. Though this narrative was one where she was villainized and there was a nasty stereotype about that house.

It was an easy narrative for one to fall into, a black and white dichotomy of reality when life was a spectrum of many shades.

His response elicited a pleasant feline variety of smirk while also drew her attention away from the toadstools and finally on David himself. "Encouraging my explosive personality are you, David Truebridge?" He was not entirely incorrect, though she had no real use for something with such popularity nor a desire to create fireworks. Aesthetically, however, yes she could see his point. Pulling back the veil on the compliment had the unfortunate and involuntary consequences of her eyes widening and her face warming. Another unpleasant outcome, thanks to her pale features, was that it was always obvious when something had her even slightly flustered. "Perhaps," she replied upon clearing her throat, fiery violet-gray eyes fleetingly gazing into his cool blue ones. "Though unfortunately lacking a certain aposematic quality with people."

Bottom line being that no, Valerie Gray still did not know how to take a compliment and there was a mild twinge of lament for how dismissive she was behaving. Hence an afterthought of an olive branch.

"I own a coat of scarlet. I shall wear it next time we meet."
David, meanwhile, had two best friends who were Gryffindors, or something like that, and as result, felt quite free and fine with the broad smirk that graced his lips, even while he made perfect eye contact with her.

He made Valerie Gray blush. Heh. Achievement unlocked.

"Excellent. I look forward to that occasion already." Was he sounding as robotic as she was? Heh. Davie smirked and ran his fingers around some... random clay pot, rubbing a bit of the soil between his thumb and index finger as he did so. Soft. It was so soft.

He began to wander away from Valerie as he became absorbed in gently touching and examining, by feel, the varieties of soil.

He was entirely too confident around her, though not in the same way that Jesús had been. Something that, looking back now, she had come to accept had made her feel small and that had fueled a part of her fury of passions towards the former Thunderbird. No, there was a cooling quality to David Truebridge's sashay...which likewise was infuriating.

Insufferable handsome man. Friend. Yes, David was a friend.

"And what shall we do on this next meeting?" she asked while tucking some stray stands of snow white hair behind her ear. "The burden does lay on your shoulders as I arranged today." As she turned to look at him, however, she found that he had already wandered off elsewhere and now entirely possible that he had not heard her faint speech.

Peering around a bit and spotting the back of his head that soon turned to his profile as he moved from pot to pot, Valerie observed his movements for a few moments. "Will you inform me which of those contains the most loamy of soils while you are over there? I require some more Valerian and Alihosty to my windowpane garden and would like not to disrupt the balance I have achieved among my existing flora. The roots on one of my existing Alihosty is particularly choosy about with whom they share a flower bed with."

January was more at peace than she had been in the last few years. The rising war, especially in combination with her daughter and every other student being kept hostage at Hogwarts with no communication... Well, that stresses a parent out. January had joined the battle long enough to find her daughter, as well as Charles' granddaughter, and make sure they were safe. After that, she slept her first peaceful sleep in a long time.

Weeks had passed, and while things were in motion to go back to "normal", January knew it would take a long time to feel normal. Damage had been done, both mentally and physically to her and her daughter. It would take time.

But all she had was time now. So she finally let herself break free of her house that she had been rather locked up in for the last (long) while and decided to soak in the late spring sunshine. With the war over and the Neo-Alliance either dead, locked up or far away, she finally felt safe going back to Diagon Alley.

The redheaded woman entered the plant store and meandered the aisles casually. She paused at the mundane section of gardening supplies and flowers. It wasn't too late to plant flowers. She had let her garden go and hadn't spruced it back up for the spring yet... but what better way to help things go back to normal than to return to her garden?

Juniper had eased off on the plant buying after her first few days in town. She had to make sure her son was going to take care of them before she consigned any more innocent plants, sentient or not, to their doom. But he seemed to be watering them, so here she was, ready to buy more plants. His flat still had a little window space left to squeeze another friend in, see. And he certainly didn't have enough human friends.

She was still worried about him. She'd worried from afar for plenty long, she was going to worry from nearby now.

That's right. Juniper Goodwin-Melo was returning to her roots.

That YATI job was definitely not safe, clearly. It had been one thing when it was all theoretical, with her precious youngest child going through the training. But he was still in training, and they had let him go to war. When she had heard, she'd been terrified her son was going to meet the same fate as her late husband. And if that were to be the case, she was not willing to be half a world away.

She was distracted as she wandered into the little greenhouse they had in Diagon Alley now. She'd been in here enough lately to have the layout nearly memorized, so she mindlessly headed toward the mundane plants to see about a little flower to spruce up little Gabe's flat--she had restrained herself so far, and only purchased useful plants, but she wanted his home to feel more like his real home. More rainforest-like, though she certainly did not expect to find much from her son's childhood in the rainforest.

She was so focused on examining the plants, looking for something healthy and tropical, she did not see the redhead looking at flowers. After bumping into the other woman, Juniper took a step back in surprise.
"Oh! I am, I'm so sorry," she said, tucking some hair behind her ear as she gave the woman her attention finally. Wait. She looked familiar. Why did she look familiar?

Chrysanthemums, chrysanthemums... ah, yes, there they were. January grabbed a few packets of seedlings just as she felt someone bump into her. "Oh-" Truthfully, the bump had startled her more than she would have liked, but she did a good job of hiding it once she turned and saw the woman. "It's alright," she said with a friendly smile, tucking the seed packets into her shopping basket.

"You're.." January started and then paused. She knew this woman. But could she remember her name? Not likely. "I know you," she said instead, leaving it open for her to agree (hopefully). Had they worked together? Perhaps when January had still been in the Creatures department.

She instinctively glanced down at the woman's shopping basket, then returned her eyes to the lady's face. Nope, there was no reason for her to be nosy. This wasn't her greenhouse and this woman could buy whatever seeds or plants she wanted, and she possibly did not need any advice from Juniper. Merlin, for all Juni knew, she recognized this woman from her Ministry days, back in the Environmental department. Maybe this woman had worked in the greenhouses with her. It was more than ten years ago, she couldn't be expected to remember that.

But OH thank Merlin, it wasn't just her who thought she knew the woman. Juniper smiled, friendly here in her element in the greenhouse store. "
Juniper Goodwin-Melo," she announced herself in a single breath. "How...why do you look so familiar?" she added. To be fair, this woman was a redhead, and redheads were...rather recognizable. And her own curly mop of brown hair was relatively distinguishable, she liked to thing.

Maybe she had just seen this woman at the supermarket or something.

Her smile was familiar, too. And her name was Juniper, yes, that definitely sounded familiar. The redhead laughed a bit as they tried to figure out how they knew each other. "I think we may have worked together," she said, her pearly whites still showing. "I used to work on level four, in the creatures department. But you..." she paused, trying to remember. "Weren't you in the Greenhouses?" It would make sense, considering they were presently in a plant shop. The memories were starting to come back.

She would blame it on the time, not her old age.

Time was definitely to blame here, time and lack of familiarity. Juniper nodded thoughtfully as the woman said she'd worked in the creatures department. Yes, that sounded familiar. She tucked a strand of her completely naturally brown curly hair back into the rest of her hair. "Yes, I did work in the greenhouses for a few years," she said with a thoughtful smile. "That must be it."

"
I'm sorry, what was your name again?" Because again, time, age, and possibly never knowing the woman's name to begin with played a factor here. Not age, though. Juniper was sharp as a pair of pruning shears. She gave the woman one more glance, trying to decide if it really just was from level four that she knew her. She really had mostly kept her head down during her time at the ministry, and this woman looked to be about her same age, give or take six years. "You weren't a Ravenclaw, were you?"

Friend, yes, that's absolutely all that David and Valerie were or ever would be. Maybe.

Ah yes, so, he'd heard her speech, and just drifted away anyway. The truth was that he had no idea how to speak to women nor plan things and so he just went with the flow as best as he could. He really needed more time to think about how and when and where he could talk to Valerie one-on-one. He'd need time to plan. He was still processing his mental picture of how she'd look in a longgggggggggg (red) jacket.

"I hadn't heard that about Ali-HOT-sy before," he replied, a certain note of mirth continuing to ring through his dry tone. "I suspect the Alihotsy could perhaps learn to be less choosy if we were to get experimental with its... bedding."

He shot an amused glance her way and withdrew his thin, soiled fingers from one of the pots, smoothly gesturing to it with said finger. "This one is adequately loamy." There was a pause, while he considered what he was pointing at. "Do you know, alihotsy leaves are an ingredient in one of my most favorite potions?" And one he often considered offering Valerie when she got into one of her moods.

Like... now, perhaps?

Magdalena McKellar had got off work early for a change. No more serving coffee for her today! She decided to get a latte for herself before she left, but then she was off. Truth be told, she probably would have been happy to work the rest of her shift because she was in quite a restless mood and speaking to customers was enjoyable for the most part. But she knew her future self wouldn't forgive her if she didn't take what she was given, so here she was.

As she wandered the streets, she considered her options. She could go home and work on her music, but wasn't really in that kind of a mood. The creative juices weren't flowing. That didn't leave much else do at home. So instead she decided to pop over to Diagon Alley and just.... wander.

Eventually, she came to an interesting looking shop. It was one that, in her twenty-one years on this earth, she had somehow never noticed before. Not that she'd been coming to Diagon Alley for that long but you caught her drift. The plants weaving their way through the brickwork intrigued her. It looked pretty quirky. So Lena pushed open the door and stepped inside, immediately being hit by a wall of warm - no, humid - air.

Had he told Rylee she could give him a plant that was low maintenance? possibly but he could just as easily buy one himself that was actually low maintenance and it actually would be. Not that he didn’t believe her of course, it’s just…they both had different ideas of what a low maintenance plant actually was. She, completely green fingered and practically a plant herself, could take care of a baby, 200 magical creatures and still somehow water the Jurassic world that was being voluptuously kept outside her front door. He however, he could barely look after himself and the last thing he really needed was some kind of needy, can only be kept at 30 degrees centigrade and watered at the dead of night plant with almond milk. In short. Ewan was after the most boring, easy plant that was on offer, simply to say he actually had one.

Walking in, his blue checked shirt tucked tightly into his beige trousers because obviously he was dressing in his smart muggles’ clothes having just finished another day at his placement, he strode amongst the plants for a moment, his mind slightly bemused at how difficult everything in here looked to be kept alive. Wiping his brow, he continued to walk around, stopping to get a closer look at some of the plants. “Is there anything in this shop that doesn’t need to be watered at the full moon?” he grumbled out loud, more out of frustration than anything. Everything in here just seemed way too complicated and difficult. Needless to say the expression on his face was a look of befuddlement.

Lena had definitely not entered the shop because she wanted to buy a plant. There was absolutely no chance of her ever keeping a plant alive unless it was plastic, in which case... it wasn't really alive to begin with, was it? No, she had entered out of curiosity, which was honestly the reason she did a lot of things. There were plants everywhere. She noticed that there were apparently organised by the places they were from but she would never have guessed that. It all looked completely random to her.

As she made her way around the different areas, leaning in close to get a better look at some of the different plants, she heard a grumbled question from someone nearby. She looked across at the guy who had spoken and noticed that he looked, honestly, way out of his depths here. "Trying to avoid werewolves, are you?" She grinned at him, clearly joking. "I would've thought those ones would be easier to look after anyway. You know, 'cause you would only need to remember to water them once a month," she mused. He probably didn't mean it as a literal question, nor was he was probably expecting a response from anyone, but him saying it had made her think about it. "On second thoughts," she said with a laugh, "there's no way I would remember when the full moon was." That hypothetical plant would be dead after a month.

The truth of the matter was, Ewan simply didn’t like the idea of having to care for something to the point where he had to commit to it. Standing there surrounded by plants that could literally kill him, the idea that he, someone who seemed to be working now more than he ever had been, had to routinely care for something else other than himself was simply ludicrous.

She did not keep many friends. The number she currently considered in this category were minute enough to be able to count on one hand and not even have to use all her fingers. So being thought of as a friend, David Truebridge, was a considerable feat in and of itself already.

A sentiment she could retract if he continued to speak in such a peculiar manner. What was the purpose of this emphasis? Was David trying to imply that he was feeling warm inside the shop? That was only to be expected given it mimicked a greenhouse and Valerie found herself cocking one of her slender sculpted brows at him as he continued. Offering an unamused slow blink, the former Wampus wondered if he found himself adorable in his attempts at herbologic flirtation. If that even was it was. Valerie preferred to think he was merely being practical and methodical. "I suppose this means I will have to over to the flat to introduce you sometime. We can divulge and examine more thoroughly into your hypothesis regarding bedding." Her eyes danced from her current examination of leaves over to him and settled there for the time being. She was, after all, keen on his curious fingers. "Perhaps once I have found my own flat would be best. That way we can be certain not to be disturbed and take our time with our rigorous experimentation."

Leaving her own observations behind, Valerie glided over to David's side and took ahold of his hand by the wrist. Despite her icy appearance, her touch was warm and she leaned in a bit to examine the way the dirt clung to his fingers before sliding her own over the length to collect the dirt into her own fingers. "And which particular emotional modifier would that be?" she inquired as she pushed the little bit of soil between her thumb and index finger for a moment. Satisfied by what she saw, her attention turned to this particular potted plant, plucked it off the shelf, and then tucked it under her arm.

After buying all of the essentials for her first year at Hogwarts, Remy found herself spending her last galleons and sickles on pointless things. Today, she wanted to find things to decorate her dorm room with, so she arrived at Noltie's Botanical Novelties. A shop she had never been to before but its ambience completely grabbed her attention while walking by. She didn't know much about Herbology but plants had always been very beautiful to Remy.

The blonde stepped inside, grinning ear to ear at the smells and sights of the store. A bit of a greenhouse vibe. She was immediately attracted to the range of toadstools, and she bounced over to browse them.

SO CUTE!

She was, however, scared to touch them in case they bit her or something. You could never be sure when stepping into a magical shop on the alley! She looked around for maybe someone to help her. Or..... to find someone else to touch them FIRST to see if they did really bite. Her fingers were more important than others, apparently.

Dahlia still had some time left before she was supposed to meet back up with her siblings at the playground. There hadn't been all that many things on her list for the days shopping trip, which was mostly do to the simply fact that she was spending a great deal of time around DA lately.

One of the shops she hadn't really spent very much time in though was this one and it was such a shame. Herbology was something she enjoyed and she was good at it. The little garden area she had of her own at home was lovely this year. As were the plants she had up in her bedroom.

A quick look around the shop wouldn't be a problem. The moment Lia pushed open the door and stepped inside she couldn't help but smile a little bit more than she had been. Maybe she would just walk around and see which plant called out to her the most.

Her feet quickly had her moving around the shop as her blue eyes took in everything, including the girl that looked about her own age. Dahlia gave her a small smile as she stopped to look at the toadstools too. "Hi."

While keeping one eye on the possible biting toadstools, Remy caught sight of some actual dangerous looking plants a bit further into the shop. She knew this because it said you had to be 'of age' to purchase them. Now those looked cool, but thankfully she wasn't 'of age' so she couldn't be tempted by them. She did take a mental note that they were there, though, for future references....

Remy was startled when another person approached her. Sheesh, people really liked to talk to strangers around here. Either that or this young girl was the shopkeeper and had a good anti aging product.

"Hello." Remy replied with kind of a smile. "Do you reckon these toadstools are poisonous? Or, like, bite?" Straight to the point. Remy pointed to the ones named 'Talking Toadstools', obviously. What other toadstool could she possibly want than one that would talk to her?

Oooh, questions!

Lia smiled sweetly, shifting her gaze from the toadstools onto the girl near her. "These ones right here aren't poisonous at all. Nor do they bite. So you can touch them safe without having to worry to much while doing so. Are you looking into getting some?"

Toadstools weren't high up on the list of favorites but being a lover of all plants and flowers, she knew quite a lot about them. So she was fairly certain she could answer at least most questions the girl might have on them.

"Oh." Remy bluntly replied. She hadn't expected the girl to know so much about the toadstools, since she didn't look much older than her. "You sound like you're good at Herbology." She observed. Showing her trusting nature, Remy reached out and gently poked one of the toadstools. Rightly so, the toadstool didn't bite her, or kill her.

"Thanks." She smiled. Remy was definitely in love with this particular toadstool she had poked, and she thought it liked her, too.

"I'm Remy." The blonde nodded, and looked at the girl expectantly to hear her name.

When the bubble of self-indulgent thoughts was eventually popped by one of the others shoppers however, it did take him a moment to fully focus. “Werewolves? Uh…I mean not really?” a brief look of confusion now. “You’d think so wouldn’t you? But then you have to set an alarm and make not of it on a calendar and it’s just…effort, you know?” and his calendar didn’t have enough room as it was. It was too full with various appointments, surgeries, work shifts and family dates. “I don’t know what day of the week it is, let alone when the full moon is” a small smile across his face now. He did know what day of the week it was so maybe, just maybe he was playing down his own intelligence but this stranger didn’t know that.

“What about you? Don’t you want some high maintenance plant that sucks up all of your time just because uh…well this plant doesn’t look that nice but I’m sure there are ones that do” he continued now, curious to see what the draw was with the things. “I guess some of them are pretty cool. You know, in a dangerous kind of way. Like I wouldn’t want one in my house because I’m stupid enough to forget about it but I can admire them…through a window”. Briefly, his eyes wandered around the shop again, taking in the various colours, leaves, pointy prickles and other various plant…things that they had.

He hadn’t cheated on his herbology O.W.L. Honest.
Lena couldn’t help but laugh at the look of confusion on the guy’s face when she mentioned werewolves. She, of course, had just been joking, but you know... full moon... werewolves... she couldn’t resist making that connection. Had it not clicked for him? “You would think so!” She agreed spiritedly. See!? There was logic to what she was saying, even if it was flawed logic with lots and lots of holes in it. If it wasn’t obvious, she hadn’t really thought it through before she said it. Where was the fun in doing that? “It is effort,” she agreed again, groaning at the mere thought of routine. Her own calendar was a mess. She would use it for a week and then forget that it existed for the next two months, and repeat that pattern infinitely. It was a minor miracle that she even remembered when she was supposed to be in work. Lena didn’t even question when he said that he didn’t know what day of the week it was because, honestly, neither did she most of the time. She did laugh, though.

“Oh, me? No,” she gave him an incredulous look and laughed. “No way. High-maintenance is not for me. I kill everything I so much as look at. My only plants are plastic. You know, the no-maintenance kind? This place just looked interesting from the outside so I decided to have a look around,” she explained and followed his gaze to a few of the plants. Cool in a dangerous kind of way, she mused. He wasn’t wrong. “They are pretty cool. It’s a shame that I’m not the nurturing type.” At least when it came to plants.

Lena also hadn’t cheated on her Herbology O.W.L. If she had then maybe she would have got better than an A.

“So, are you looking for a low-maintenance plant then?” She assumed he must be as he was clearly against high-maintenance ones. And because of his initial question of whether there were any plants that didn’t need to be watered at the full moon. Her deductive powers were strong, clearly.

Dahlia shifted uncomfortably when the girl replied so bluntly to her at first. It confused her a little. She had only been trying to be nice and offer some of her own knowledge of toadstools. "I am. It's one of my favorite classes." The more she could learn about plants the happier she was. Lia watched as the girl poked at the toadstool. Had she been checking to see if she was lying to her?

"You're welcome." She was happy to help whenever she could. "It's nice to meet you, Remy. I'm Dahlia."

"You're welcome." She was happy to help whenever she could. "It's nice to meet you, Remy. I'm Dahlia."
Remy's eyes opened at her response, suddenly much more interested in the conversation. "Oh? You've already been to Hogwarts?" Clearly was older than Remy had first suspected. It was cool to hear about Herbology. She didn't have much knowledge of it, but she was certainly more excited for that subject as opposed to others. "I think I'd enjoy Herbology, too!" She smiled.

"Nice to meet you, too." Remy smiled as she picked up the Talking Toadstool and tucked it under her arm.

"Are you going to buy anything??" It would be interesting to see what an actual Herbology student-whizz-whatever was going to buy.

Lia nodded, not at all surprised by the look on the girls face. She was a bit small for her age and she knew it. "I'm going to be a second year." Not that she really wanted to return to Hogwarts after last term but she wasn't going to bring that up with someone she only just met. "If you enjoy muggle plants and gardening then you most likely will enjoy Herbology as well. I'd be happy to show you around the greenhouses and things when the term starts if you like?" It would give her something nice to look forward to.

Lia smiled. "The only thing I'd recommend with those is if you get more than one is to make sure to plant them far enough apart so they don't annoy each other." Yes, talking toadstools could actually start to bug one another with their chatter!

"Probably?" she giggled. "I usually do whenever I'm around plants. I just can't help myself even if I don't actually need anything." What she was going to get today she really wasn't sure of yet.

COOooool!! This meant she had someone to look out for her, maybe. That's if Dahlia liked her. "Oh, wow! What's it like? What house are you in?" It was especially interesting since it would have been only last year that Dahlia was in her first year. The intel would be fresh. "Yes! Please show me around the greenhouses!" It was super cool that you could just go to the greenhouses to hang out. Maybe there were guards there for the planties.

O___O

They ANNOY each other?

"Huh?!" For a witch from a very magical family, her knowledge on magical toadstools was lacking. "They can ANNOY each other?" Remy couldn't help but giggle at the thought. "Maybe I should just get the one, then." She wondered if it was worth getting any, she wouldn't want to annoy her future dormmates.

Remy grinned. "I think you should. Maybe you could get a Talking Toadstool and they can be friends, like us." It was an ambitious comment to make to someone she just met, but Remy was feeling adventurous.
