Space has been made - or has it always been there? - for a brand new garden: a memorial dedicated to those who fell in the Third Wizarding War. The garden is surprisingly quiet, given its location in a busy wizarding London street. It's calm here. Peaceful.
Most likely to immediately draw the eye is a statue in the middle of the garden, at the centre of a small pond. A tall, titanium sculpture of a phoenix stands atop a round plinth; almost two hundred names are engraved here, the names of those who fell during the length of the war, listed in columns and slowly revolving, though the plinth itself is stationary. The sculpture seems to bathe the garden around it in a warm glow, and does so year-round. There are some flashes of colour on the titanium phoenix; many of its feathers are detailed in red and gold, and the astute observer will notice that the number of coloured feathers exactly matches the number of names listed below.
Every year, on the anniversary of the 2104 battle, the phoenix can be seen to cry, shedding tears from sunset on 9th May to sunset on 10th May.
A mosaic-like path winds its way through the grass and under arches, made up of bricks and paving stones of different colours. Spaced around the garden, roughly in each of its corners, are four benches. According to the inscriptions on these benches, each has been provided by a different institution or significant area of wizarding Britain: Hogwarts, St Mungo's, the Ministry of Magic, and Diagon Alley itself. Throughout the garden, a variety of brightly coloured and aromatic flowers, shrubs, young trees, and other plants can be found, with plenty of space still left to be filled.
There definitely was not anyone like Claudine, Blake Ryan. Don’t you ever forget it.
The young woman had actually not seen Blake when he entered the gardens, so observed in her thoughts she was. Sometimes, Claudine did allow herself to mourn for the family she had lost and to feel the great regret that she hadn’t been able to do more for her sister and younger cousins. Then she grew mad at herself for even thinking like that when they each were capable of making their own choices and her family had made theirs.
That voice broke into her thoughts. It was one she hadn’t heard in years and could not immediately place. The face, however? The face was in an instant matched with a name. “Blake?” Yes, Claudine was surprised. “Hi. Long time no see.” There was no hostility in her voice, and she was actually happy to see him.
Blake split into his usual grin. He was surprised at how happy he was to see her. It truly was like coming home for good then. "It sure has been." He added at her comment, and then went whole hog and gave her a hug - well sort of like a side hug? Well anyway ...
"How have you been? What have you been up to after Hogwarts?" He felt like he could rapid fire off about a millions questions. It had after all been nearly 4 years since they had seen each other last. Lots of time to get up to mischief or work.

But we’ll be moving back here afterwards.” Graduation from Wizarding University will be happening soon! “I plan on working at the Scamander Zoo and I’m looking forward to being back full time in a few months.” Claudine hugged herself thinking how happy she was about the prospective future. “Tell me all about what you’ve been up to, Blake! I just can’t believe how long it’s been since I saw you.”

He couldn't help smiling at how much both seemed to have changed since graduation. "The Scamander Zoo? That's awesome" he loved the zoo, really that's where he should have gone today instead of the memorial, but then again, he wouldn't be here with Claudine then either. Fate had it's way about it.

A full hug would have gone well but Blake’s hesitation was understandable. The old Claudine did not appreciate such gestures and Blake did not know this new, improved Claudine. “Thanks.” She smiled, really meaning it. “I’m looking forward to it. And to maybe having you stop by at times.” Yes, this was her way of saying that she’d like to see you more, Blake.
The young woman fixed the guy beside her with a pointed glare. “Excuse me? How do you not know who Heath is? He was in our year at Hogwarts. That’s my boyfriend.” She was highly offended on behalf of her Heath though she supposed that Heath himself would not be offended about this entire episode. He was a gentle soul like that. Never mind it. She could be annoyed at Blake enough for the both of them.
It absolutely blew her mind that she had known that Blake had gone abroad to study also. But it was important that she knew now. Herbs and Fungi, huh? “That’s interesting!” Yet again, Claudine fixed Blake with a glare that seemed to be only reserved for him. “I’d like to see you try, Blake Ryan!’’ But in no time she was laughing. “I bet you could. Remind me not to accept anything from you.” She too was joking for the record. “Good luck with the interview! You’re going to do smashingly, I know it. Where is this potential job site?”

It is was one of the privileges of being young that the importance of the memorial that could be found in Diagon Alley was entirely lost on him. Drake was only vaguely aware that there had been a war, and what that would have meant to people - perhaps even how it would have impacted those his own age. He did not like to talk about or ruminate on sad things, so asking questions was not something that had come to mind for him and so far no one had spoke on it much and caused him to think further.
Instead, what this place WAS to him was the most wonderful of locations to enjoy a wide array of flowers and plants. Which happened to be some of his favorite things to enjoy in nature. Which was probably why he often found himself gravitating towards this area. He and his sister HAD come today with the intention of observing students older them - getting excited for what was going to be their own summer next year. And yet still... he'd slipped away and here he now sat on one of the benches, watching as a butterfly flitted from one bush to the next. "I wonder if my patronus could be a butterfly one day..."

Unlike her twin, the significance of the memorial was not lost on her. While they had been four when the war had taken place and they weren't directly impacted by it, Gilly had read plenty about it in old newspapers and even in a book that had been published about it. This was just one of many topics she had stored in her head, the information waiting to be utilized at the right moment.
As relevant as the information would have been in their current setting, her knowledge about how the garden came to be and the symbolism of the phoenix statue was something her brother wouldn't have been interested in; she knew he was invested in the flowers and shrubs. While she could acknowledge that the flora was beautiful, her attention was on the names that were engraved on the round plinth.
Drake's voice brought her attention away from the hundreds of names she was reading. At first the comment about the possibility of a butterfly Patronus seemed out of the blue, but she was quick to observe the butterfly fluttering from bush to bush. "It is a possibility," she responded before spewing out some details she knew about spirit guardians. "Everyone's Patronus is unique and reflect their innermost personality. A butterfly would be very fitting for you." As for her, now that she was thinking about it, she liked the idea of her potential Patronus being a Thestral.

He noticed the few times he looked over at his sister that she was examining the names plastered all over the plinth, but he couldn't understand why that would be so interesting to her. But he also had enough sense to know that the by the design of the piece of artwork, he perhaps would not like the subject matter of talking about it. So... another privilege of being young was that for the time being, he chose to not ask about it.
Oftentimes it could be hard to follow Gilly's thought processes, considering there was just so much more she had researched and knew than Drake himself did, but there were other times like this moment that he was thankful for his sister's brain and it's wealth of knowledge. "Does that mean if I wanted to try to be an animagi that that could be a butterfly as well?" He liked that idea a lot. Imagine, getting to change at will and just enjoy the lazy dance of a butterfly throughout a garden. Or perhaps even a bee, helping to grow the flowers that he so enjoyed observing. "What would you want your patronus to be? Or animagus?" Would she want two different ones? He heard that could be rare, but it sounded interesting still too.

There was something pleasing about recognizing some of the names engraved on the plinth that she had come across in her reading. While the circumstances were melancholy in nature, the connections being made in her young mind were getting her only strengthening her mental prowess. She'd likely do more research on some of the names that were present. Knowledge was power, after all.
"Studies have shown that it is most common for one's Patronus and Animagus forms to be the same. Both forms being different is very rare," Gilly answered his first question factually. "But, of course, becoming an Animagus is already a challenging endeavor in itself." There was a time she had considered becoming one in the future, though the intricate, time-consuming process and all the risks involved did put her off a bit. It was something she'd keep in the back of her mind and consider at a later time in her life.
"A Thestral would be neat," she continued, examining his face to see how he would react. "But that's a pretty uncommon form. So maybe an owl or snake of some kind."

That was some information that, surprisingly, he did have. Reading about animals and plants and the magical attributes relevant to both was something he actually had some interest in. Though he certainly could never explain things in such a clear and concise way as his sister always seemed to be able to. "I think it would be cool to have different ones. But outside of the rarity... I don't think I could ever do the training to become one." What a bummer. Though perhaps one day he would have more confidence in being able to do so. Time would tell, he was only 10 after all.
"Why do you think it is that mundane creatures are more common than the magical?" Was it perhaps because mundane creatures in reality were more plentiful? Perhaps it was just the knowledge of magic all his life that made it seem so, but it certainly felt to Drake like there was also a lot of magical creatures to be found too.

Gilly was not at all surprised that her brother thought it would be cool to have different Patronus and Animagus forms. She found the possibility to be neat as well, though was primarily more interested in the kind of people that were capable of such a thing. The rarity of people with different forms truly said something of their inner core. What exactly, she didn't know. It was one of life's many unanswered questions, which she would likely pursue an answer for. That, though, would have to wait another day. There were other pieces of knowledge she had prioritized.
"Well, if either of us ever decides to go through with Animagus training, we could do it together," the curly-haired girl told him with a smile. She couldn't think of anyone else she would want to do it with. They would be a team like they have been their entire lives.
As for Drake's latest question, she didn't have as black-and-white of an answer to give. "There are a variety of theories about that, but nothing set in stone. I'm of the mind to think it has to do with a combination of the creatures we are more commonly surrounded by and which ones we identify ourselves and associate our happiest memories with."

There were so many of life's unanswered questions that he knew Gilly had plans to someday answer, but the boy could not grasp how she was going to prioritize which to focus on first. He had no doubt that she'd be successful in all, so this was truly his own question. But he knew that if he were to ask her thought process... he'd be quickly lost. So instead he'd just resign himself to whenever she was ready to take a crack at researching for the first, he'd be her clueless cheerleader on the sidelines.
At the suggestion that they do animagus training together if either ever wanted to, his smile lit up his face as he nodded in agreement and skipped over towards her. "Deal! Pinky promise on it?" He liked having his twin sister, his best friend, and being able to do all the big milestones with her. Optional ones were no different in his mind.
He contemplated her response, hand resting on his chin as he looked up to the sky as if he it would provide even further clarity. "So like.. then maybe people who have worked with or around magical creatures all their life would be the ones with magical patronuses?" Her theory did make sense on a lot of levels too given such a wide range of magical creatures were unsafe for handling around children. It was much, much easier to be raised around the mundane with some exceptions here and there.

Daisy wasn't sure why she had decided to tag along to Diagon Alley today. Since she was forgoing her final year at Hogwarts in favor of music school, she didn't have any supply shopping to do. She didn't like the hustle and bustle of so many raucous children and teenagers. And now that she had passed her apparation test, it wasn't like she needed a ride. She could have chosen any day (even a day after all the Hogwarts kids were gone!) to visit.
But either nostalgia or restlessness had driven her out of the house, and a need for quiet had driven her to this garden. The seventeen-year-old wandered, pausing every now and again to admire the flowers and greenness of the garden. The stillness of it would have prompted thoughtful contemplation if Daisy didn't already spend nearly every waking moment, well those that weren't spent practicing, thinking or planning or trying to solve a problem that didn't exist.
She found a nice grassy area and sat down cross-legged. Meditation was good for musicians, she'd heard, something about it helping them be more present in the moment. So she closed her eyes and tried to meditate.

Blake blushed again ... "Yeah I still don't remember a Heath." He added, must not have had much interaction with him through his years. But honestly he didn't interact much with anyone.
"Maybe we can all together somtime. I mean I don't have a girlfriend .. but would be willing to be set up if you know anyone." Blake added with a smile, he really wouldn't mind having some companionship.
"It's a job through the ministry for now - being sent out to do investigation and stuff." He was really hoping to get it. "So scamander zoo huh? Any specific type of animal?" It was strange where they both ended up really.

Daisy's eyes flew open as she heard a twig crunch nearby. Turning lazily to see what it was, she saw it was a boy around her age. The meditation must have worked, though, because rather than being annoyed at being interrupted, the nearly eightteen-year-old smiled. He did apologize, after all.
"It's alright," she said, checking her watch. She'd lost track of time, what with her eyes being closed and all. Had she really been sitting on the ground for that long? She smoothly got to her feet, trying to subtly brush the dirt off her jeans.
"I was nearly done anyway." Which was not technically true, she thought she may have sat there for hours if undisturbed, but it should have been true. Her feet may have fallen asleep if she'd been sitting in that position for too long.

Daisy's eyes flew open as she heard a twig crunch nearby. Turning lazily to see what it was, she saw it was a boy around her age. The meditation must have worked, though, because rather than being annoyed at being interrupted, the nearly eightteen-year-old smiled. He did apologize, after all.
"It's alright," she said, checking her watch. She'd lost track of time, what with her eyes being closed and all. Had she really been sitting on the ground for that long? She smoothly got to her feet, trying to subtly brush the dirt off her jeans.
"I was nearly done anyway." Which was not technically true, she thought she may have sat there for hours if undisturbed, but it should have been true. Her feet may have fallen asleep if she'd been sitting in that position for too long.
Adam’s heart dropped as the girl’s eyes opened. How was she going to react to him? Would she be angry? He wasn’t sure he wanted to stay long enough to find out! Fighting the urge to run away, he stood frozen in place, looking like a deer in the headlights. It was only when he saw the girl’s smile that he relaxed a bit, returning her smile with a small one of his own.
Sticking his hands into his jacket pocket, he glanced around the garden, then back at the girl. “Quite easy to get lost in thought here, isn’t it?” he said, making an effort at small talk in his own (probably awkward) way.

It was her turn to share a mildly confused look at his attempt at small talk. "Um," she said. Very insightful. "I guess so?" She tucked her curls behind her ears, looking around the garden. "It's less frantic than...you know." She gestured back towards the rest of Diagon Alley, filled with shoppers and shouting and chaos.

In fact, the current mystery that Gilly was focused on finding an answer to whether it was the phoenix or the flame that came first. So far her results were inconclusive. She was certain that was the point, and it would be difficult to know for certain until she had access to a phoenix or was allowed to tend to an open flame. For now she'd settle with letting the theory flicker in her mind and momentarily busy herself with the memorial garden.

So... yes, flame first and then phoenix.

There was something too... serious about those. Not that he was in the habit of breaking promises, but he could accidentally do it sometimes and preferred the penalty of a mistake to not be... y'know, death. Seeing her pinky stuck out, he grinned at her and looped his tiny finger through hers and gave their hands a shake.
He considered her question, wondering if their mom WOULD let them keep any magical creatures. "I think... if we stumbled upon some Mum wouldn't make us give them up..." Depending on their classification anyways. "Maybe we should narrow our selections though to the ones we would most want to be our patronuses? Do you have a magical creature you'd like? I think a thestral might be hard to convince Mum on... is there a second choice?"

The nineteen-year-old ran a hand through his dark hair before sticking both hands into his jacket pockets. Hearing the girl’s reply, his eyes darted in the direction she gestured… toward the rest of Diagon Alley and all of its insanity. “Very much so,” he replied, nodding in agreement. He stared out at the bustling alley for a moment, lost in thought. “I was never one for chaotic environments,” he mused to himself. Whoops, did he say that out loud? “Never mind, sorry.”
Searching for a distraction, he supposed now would be the time to introduce himself. “I’m Adam,” he said, the name pronounced ah-DAHM with his French accent.

Ultimately it brought up a lot of things that needed to be taken into consideration when looking at things holistically, which Gilly would save for another day.
For her, there was something incredibly childish about pinky promises (never mind the fact that she was still a child). In her mind, if she was going to make a promise, then an Unbreakable Vow would have been fitting. She was a serious person, and she took her promises to Drake quite seriously. But she knew such a vow wasn't needed at the end of the day. Their twin connection was enough to play along with pinky promises. With other people, well, that was a different matter entirely.
An eyebrow rose at what her brother was suggesting. "You mean we should just bring some home and see what happens?" she asked aloud, considering the idea. Gilly was positive that their mother wouldn't be able to say no after seeing how attached they would be to their newfound pets. "If I can't have a thestral, I think an owl or a snake would be a good fit. We could drop into Eeylops or the Menagerie... Do some window shopping..."

Yes, they were technically children; their size and youthful appearance made that abundantly clear. However, in her mind, Gilly considered herself to be anything but a child. In comparison to others, and some adults even, she was quite mature for her age, an old soul. In her opinion, that was what mattered most, or should have mattered, at the end of the day.
Funnily enough, the possibility of them getting into trouble if they brought a creature of some sort home with them was a thought that vanished just as quickly as it popped into her mind. There wasn't a time when she and her brother got into trouble. Receiving the look and a reprimand here and there, yes, but never anything more extreme than that. She was very aware that they could be hard to say no to. She could be rather persuasive, and Drake had his charm.
"I don't think she'd say no. Though I do think she'd appreciate a conversation before we show up with a critter," Gillyweed replied rationally. "But looking at our options would be a good start. They weren't even Hogwarts students yet, and yet Gil was so scholarly and thoughtful. Drake was far happier to just exist in the same space as his favorite people and enjoy life as each day came. Focusing on questions or expanding his knowledge or life experiences was just not something the 10 year old was interested in.
Besides, why would he need to be scholarly anyways when he had his sister who could probably explain anything to him?

Indeed, such a topic was something that they would have to agree to disagree on. Gilly of course understood her brother's mindset, often times wishing she could be more like him. Though certain habits of hers and the way she thought and went about things were not as fluid. Structure and knowing things gave her comfort. Even so, she was grateful that she had her brother by her side. A fine balancing act, they were.
Such an act was needed right now. As much as she understood Drake's line of thinking of just showing up with a pet without any warning and would have gone through with it had it been anyone else's parent, it was not something she wanted to do to their mother. Or to themselves if they somehow ended up getting in trouble for it. "While I like the 'better to ask for forgiveness than permission' vibe you've got going on right now, I do think we'll have the upper hand talking to Mum about it first. It'll show we're serious and aren't going behind her back. There's enough cleverness between us to persuade her if she isn't on board right away." And if that didn't work out, then they could sneak a critter in their home and prove their mother wrong.
"I've heard kneazles are easier to care for, especially with living in an apartment," she told him. "Plus we'd be able to take the little furball to school with us, rather than leave a pet like a cruppy at home. So that's what I'm thinking, though having a cruppy sounds like a fun time too."
