Default Cranville Quincey's Magical Junk Shop

Located on the south side of Diagon Alley, sandwiched in between Sugarplum's Sweets Shop and Janus Galloglass, is Cranville Quincey's Magical Junk Shop. The outside of this shop is nothing spectacular. A cardboard box labelled 'FREE STUFF' (containing bits of parchment that have already been doodled on and various items broken well beyond repair) rests on the cobbled street, serving an indicator of what kind of establishment this is.

Just beyond the door lays a maze of numerous bins, shelves, and racks holding various items with price tags tied onto them. To the left of the shop is where all second-hand clothing can be found for those who don't feel the need to purchase the pricey fabrics and accessories being sold at Madam Malkin's or Twilfitt and Tattings. The back is reserved for all kinds of books and reading material. Of course, they aren't nearly as top-quality as the ones Flourish and Blotts and other bookshops, but the amount you'll be paying for them is quite a bargain. Lastly, the right side of the shop is where you will find a large variety of miscellaneous items. Take your time browsing through these items as not even the shopkeeper remembers what all is here.

When you are ready to pay for your newfound treasures, make your way to the counter in the middle of the shop. On the counter itself, you will find a till and, oddly enough, a rubber chicken substituting as a bell. Typically the rubber chicken doesn't need to be squeezed as the shopkeeper is usually sleeping at the counter. But, in the event that the shopkeeper isn't around, give the chicken a good squeeze and he will be right over.

Default Open - somebody please play with Sylvia :)
it's either adhd or wrackspurts <3 <3 lily luna's mom has got it going on

Sylvia walked down the familiar cobblestone streets of Diagon Alley, relishing the feeling of warm summer air on her freshly-buzzed scalp. Today was her first day off in weeks.

Alasdair kept a tight orbit around his mum, eyes roaming in all directions. He kept quiet but was almost giddy with excitement - they were going to his FAVORITE store and he had a whole GALLEON to spend. His little fist clutched around the fat gold coin, swinging it back and forth as he walked. He wasn't worried about anybody stealing it with his mama here.

Sylvia got a bit impatient with her son sometimes when they went on these outings. He was so meticulous and took so long to even enter the door - they always had to stop out front and look at every used-up piece of parchment and broken toy in the "FREE STUFF" box. Her mission today was to practice patience and let him take his time. So when they finally arrived at their destination she went ahead and took a seat on the ground next to the box and braced herself for the next half-hour of oooh-ing and ahh-ing.

She raised her eyebrows at his browsing and girlfriend comments. Who bought their girlfriend a gift at a junk shop? At that point, she thought it'd be better to have something homemade. "You should check out Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes," she suggested, as an alternative. It was a good bet--either he could get her something entertaining, or something useful from one of their...less joking sections.

"Me?" she put the last bird cage back, finally feeling some of the heat leave her face. "I'm here for books. A lot of them have pages missing, but...well, there's usually enough context to guess." Sometimes. If the plot was simple enough. And if it wasn't, she got some added joy from theorizing about what had been on those missing pages. Plus, if they had any children's books, she could grab some for Sophie, and Amelia, when she finally got home.

As for if he could help... "I mean, if you have some unexpected familiarity with the books they have here, I'm open to recommendations..." she said, with a more natural smile than her previous one as she attempted a joke.
For the record, he hadn't come into the junk shop for the purpose of buying Jorgie a gift - he took gift-giving and his girlfriend very seriously. Unfortunately, the former Ravenclaw also had a painful inability to keep on task, so stumbling into this shop was bound to happen. At the rate at which he'd been going, he'd likely find himself inside every single shop, before reaching the one he actually came to Diagon Alley for. That's just the way Jackson rolled. And yes, it even frustrated him.

But, hey! What can you do!?!?!

As for her suggestion though, he shook his head (not unkindly). "Maybe I'll head there next! But, uh, Jorgie isn't big on that sort of stuff, so I'm not sure I'll find something there." Not that she didn't appreciate jokes, but he knew she'd rather a gift that came from the heart. Something more sentimental than what you could find at a joke store, y'know? Was that cheesy? Oh!!! Maybe he could get her some cheesy garlic bread! Cheesy garlic bread was more sentimental than headless hats were, believe it or not.

But uh, enough about Jackson's problems. He never liked focusing on himself much anyway. Besides, he hadn't seen Honora in a miiiiiiiinute, so it was nice to hear more about her. "Oh, that sounds like fun," he smiled earnestly, looking around for where they kept the books. Was there any semblance of organization around this place? Probably not. It looked a lot like the inside of Jackson's room, actually. Palmer would hate it in here! "Must be a good creative exercise too, huh?" It'd be like reading a new book every time you picked it up again!

As for unexpected familiarity... Jackson, uh, did..... not have that, no - but he was still eager to help, as always. "Haha," he chuckled quietly and mussed his hair. "Do you, uh, have a favorite genre?" Maybe he could help if he knew that.

Not a fan of a joke gift...well, she could see that. She supposed, if she'd been given something from WWW's as a gift from a partner...yes, she definitely would be mildly offended, even if it was one of the fancy witch soaps or something more practical than an extendable ear. Though, she supposed even extendable ears had their purposes. Maybe she needed to stop by Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes herself, especially if she did not find any interesting-looking books.

Speaking of listening...

"Creative? I never thought of it like that," she said with a shrug as she led the way to where she knew the books could usually be found. But she did know the saying, necessity was the mother of invention. And her family was fairly inventive, she supposed. "I don't think I have a favorite genre," she mused. "I like to try a little bit of everything, keep it interesting."

She paused at a stack of books and peered at the titles. Some of these books were ancient. "Do you read much?" She could not remember if he was the type of Ravenclaw with their nose always in a book, or a more practical sort.

"Yeah, you get to make up parts of the story, I'd say that's pretty creative!" He wasn't an expert on creativity by any means, but when you're in Ravenclaw House, you're pretty much surrounded by it. He'd have been lucky if even a bit of creativity had rubbed off on him at all during the seven terms he spent at Hogwarts. But who was to tell? "Ah, well, that does make it easier I guess! I'm sure they'll have something here that'll catch your eye."

Maybe a book would catch his eye too. It had been a while since he read a proper book. Always got too distracted before making it to the end. A real shame. Y'know... After all these years, he still never found out what happened to Liz Bennett.

"Oh, uh," he ruffled his hair. "Not really, but not because I don't like to. It's just hard to find the time, y'know? Though.... I guess that's just an excuse...?" Because you know what they say... You make time for the people you love. Did that apply to books too? Maybe it should.

So she was creative. That was not quite news. It was really too bad that creative careers were very competitive in terms of, y'know, international recognition.

Like, sure, she could probably write a decent novel if she tried, but who'd read it?

And for the record--Honora would happily tell Jack the ending to Pride and Prejudice. It was a fantastically unbelievable novel, she would have found it hard to believe people ever really interacted that way, even in Muggle society, if her granddad hadn't given her a crash course on the history of Regency society. History buffs were helpful that way. Maybe she'd look for some historical novels or memoirs in this stack. "Yes, I always find something," she said, picking up a book that looked promising and flipping through to see how much of the text was missing.

Hard to find the time to read...well, Honora would give him a pass on that excuse, as she had a very un-demanding job and no school, so she'd had p l e n t y of reading time over the last year. "So you like to read, but maybe it's not in your top ten list of favorite activities?" she said with a half smile. Seemed like a common response, honestly. She knew she hadn't read quite so much fun books when she'd been busy studying, so it made sense as an excuse to her.

Jackson would read it! He loved supporting his friends in their endeavors.

"Yeah, maybe," he replied, still mulling it over. He wasn't sure he even had ten favorite activities to choose from. Ten was kind of a big number. Double digits and everything. "I guess I've just gotta find a book to really get me sucked in again, you know?" It had really been a while. "The last time I was really into reading it was because of a book called, uh, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - have you heard of it? It's pretty old, but still funny." He liked light-hearted books like that. Ones that had deep meanings that weren't so overt.

42. Heh.

A survey of the books on these shelves showed proved that they had all sorts of genres, which was nice. Even if pages were ripped out, at least there were books for all tastes. "How high up is reading on your list of top ten favorite activities?" And did she have TEN top favorite activities? Because ones again, ten was a lot.

Honora absolutely had ten top favorite activities. And they were always changing, because she didn't truly love most of them, they just provided enough mental stimulation that she enjoyed learning them, and then once she realized she was never going to be amazing at something, she moved on. Reading was one of the few activities with Top Ten staying power, because it was just for her. There was no way to be better or worse at reading, she felt. And it was useful, too. She had learned so many more spells through reading extra books during her time at Hogwarts than if she'd only learnt what they taught in classes.

"I haven't heard of it," she said, as she decided the book in her hand might be interesting, and didn't appear to be missing any pages. She picked up another and began the flipping process again. "You like funny books, then?" She might have some recommendations for him the next time they ran into each other, if that were the case.

She hmmmed as she thought about what her current top ten favorite activities were. And where reading fell in that list. "It's a pretty solid number two," she said after a moment. The number one position was obviously reserved for things that had the potential to be her life's true passion, but never were. Her most recent number one position had been writing travel guides, but that did not last long. She would have to travel to be any good at that.

There seemed to be an unusual number of books with no pages missing today. "Does Jorgie like to read?"

There seemed to be an unusual number of books with no pages missing today. "Does Jorgie like to read?"
Jackson had just about the opposite problem. He liked everything! Well, no that wasn’t entirely true. He didn’t like everything, but he liked so much that it was difficult to come up with any sort of ranking system, let alone find ten that he liked any more than the others. Maybe there were two he could pick out that he enjoyed significantly more. But ten? Ten’s a big number. Had he mentioned that yet? This was, coincidentally, the reason why his gap year was turning out to be such a struggle. They didn’t teach you how to navigate this sort of thing in school. Though maybe they ought to, instead of divinations - which didn’t have much practical use, in Jackson’s opinion.

”It’s a good one. Quick read too,” he grinned, reaching to grab a book off the shelf, but not really paying much attention to it otherwise. It was difficult to multitask and as much as he did want to help in Honora’s search, he was having too great a time speaking to her to manage searching through books. ”I guess so, but maybe not humor as a genre on its own? Layers are always nice.” Books with layers, y’know? Like onions. ”Science fiction is pretty cool too.” Maybe that’s where his Ravenclaw side kicked in?

He thumbed through the book in his hand, but did so absently, as he was really giving his attention to the conversation at hand. Maybe people should be at the top of his top ten list? That’d make good sense. ”Oh? What beats it out for the coveted number one spot on Honora’s top ten list?” He was curious and genuinely interested too.

And, as for Jorgie, ”Uh, well, I don’t think it’d be on her top ten list, if we’re keeping track of that sort of thing,” he smiled, laughing quietly in a good-natured sort of way. Jorgie had other priorities, though she was much better at keeping on task when they were meant to be reading for homework.

Honora found she was accumulating...uhhhhh...quite the stack of used books. On the plus side, this meant she wouldn't have to come back to London for awhile. On the down side, this meant she wouldn't have a reason to come back to London for awhile.

"I'll have to add it to my list," she said, meaning her list of books to read. It was a long list, because she added to it more frequently than she crossed anything off. So much of her reading came from the used bookstore, where there weren't exactly infinite choices. As for the other list, of recommendations for Jack, she already had a few in mind. Humourous science fiction with deeper undertones was a very specific genre, but sometimes specificity was good.

She put a book back on the stack that had too many missing pages. She probably had enough books. Possibly too many books. But this chat was nice, it had been so long since she'd really talked with anyone from Hogwarts. "Number one on my list?" she repeated, startled by the question. Wait, what was her number one of the day? Cooking? The travel guides thing from last week? She tapped the stack of books in her hand, thinking on that for a moment. Maybe she should just tell the truth. "The number one spot is for whatever I find that'll, well, make me famous," she said, opting for honestly even though it did make her blush the tiniest amount. Just a hint of pink in her cheeks, nothing like the full flush of earlier. "I've been cooking, lately? Maybe I can be the next Julia Child?" Did he even know who Julia Child was?

She nodded slightly, and smiled at his laughter. Not everyone liked reading, and that was okay. More books for her.

Jackson, on the other hand, had accumulated zero books, despite insisting that he'd be helpful. It wasn't his fault though - honest! Every time he began looking through the book he had in his hands, he got proper distracted. It was far more important to give Honora his full attention, anyway. It wasn't every day you ran into an old schoolmate! Especially with everyone all over the place at uni and working real jobs. Had to cherish the moments when they came by, y'know? Jack wasn't about to take any of it for granted.

"You must really like lists," he smiled, not unkindly. Jackson tried being a list person once. It worked out for all of three days, but he kept misplacing the lists so uhhhhh.... Some poor house-elf had probably come by a huge pile underneath one of the Ravenclaw four-poster beds by the time Jackson had graduated. Heh. Parchment, y'know!? Just runs off on its own! Can't help itself. In any case, he admired people who could keep track of their lists. That was the real secret to keeping your life together. If you can't keep organized, surround yourself with people who can. They might hate you for it, but uhhhhhhh maybe one day they'll rub off on you.

And if not, they're plenty fun to be around so it all works out!

Uh. Anyway. What were they talking about? Oh, yes. Lists. But not the book lists, they were talking about other lists right now. Maybe they needed a list for all the lists. Heh. "Ha!" Jackson laughed a little louder than he probably should have. It was a good thing they were only in the book section of a junk shop and not an actual library. "Who's Julia? And .... do all her children cook?" He was kidding, of course. About the child thing. Not the Julia thing. He had never heard the name Julia Child.

She liked lists? Yes, Honora supposed she did. It helped her stay on top of things. Shopping lists, to-do lists, reading lists... the list could go on and on. "Yes," she agreed with a smile. It really helped her with that organization she was good at.

She bit her lip to keep herself from grinning as well, at least he was laughing and not judging with her...well, her intent for holding the number one spot for something useful. And she was right, he'd never heard of Julia Child. She definitely wanted to be more famous than her, then. "Julia Child is a Muggle cook, she wrote a big cookbook," she explained simply. She glanced down at the two books she'd picked out. Two seemed like enough, for today at least.

"Can I ask you something?" It was unrelated to lists, or Julia Child, but...she was curious.

"I like them too," he replied easily. "In theory." Yes, the clarification was necessary. "I'm not any good at them in practice though. My brain just can't seem to process things linearly." Or maybe it was his penmanship. Even if he were to manage lists, he probably wouldn't be able to read them. And thaaaaaaat's why Jackson Bole could never take up a job in academia. Not that he'd be any good at that either.

Something he was good at though? Laughing with people. Jack(son) wasn't the type to judge, that sort of thing never suited him, especially when someone shared something personal. Honora's coveted top-list-spot felt like something personal, y'know? "Oh, neat! Have you ever tried out one of her recipes?" Maybe they'd find one of Julia Children's books here.... Though, uh, once again, finding it would require Jackson to get back to looking.

But he was way too engaged in this conversation and Honra had piqued his curiosity again, so the book search would have to wait. "Yeah, of course!" Jack was an open book! (Pun, always, intended)

Liking lists in theory was something Honora had never even considered as a possibility. His point about linearity, though, was interesting, she thought. "Sometimes it's easier to consider the list like a bucket," she said thoughtfully. "Things grouped together by something in common, whether that's favoritism or necessity." Was she acting like a list expert? Maybe. Was that a job she could have? Did people need list experts for something? She would be very good at that.

Honora nodded. "Yes, I've tried a few when I helped out in the kitchen." Her stepmum's cook had returned from holiday, though, and she'd been promptly kicked out of the bed and breakfast's kitchen. And she wasn't complaining, it had been a bit much to handle scheduling of rooms and food. "My little sister is a bit of a picky eater though, so we can't experiment much." One of the reasons Honora was looking forward to moving out. So she could have her own kitchen and her own dinner guests, who would not have a six-year-old's palate.

She smiled in relief. She didn't much like asking people personal questions, but sometimes you did need to know about other people. And she didn't think of this as being nosy, but rather...well, she might be able to get some life plan ideas from Jack, if he had any good ones. "Do you have a job? Or--are in uni?" What had he been doing since Hogwarts, was all she wanted to know.

"I hear they have lists for those too." Bucket lists. Heh. Geddit?

Even if the joke itself weren't all that funny, Jackson's smile was ridiculously goofy. It be like that sometimes.

But, uh, in all seriousness, "That's a neat way to think about it." Would this motivate him to keep lists in attempt to organize himself? Maybe. Maybe for all of one day. But Jack(son) would likely only keep it up for a day before deciding that he was better off going with the flow anyway. It's how he approached most things in life. His plans were always headed for disasters anyway. It was a risky life he led.

Cooking was something he could definitely get behind though and baking too, Jackson liked helping his mum with that stuff. Probably his Moretti side kicking in or something. Definitely. "I can imagine that'd limit options. My little sister is kind of the same. Must be a younger sibling thing." Not Jackson though, he'd eat ANYTHING. And EVERYTHING. If there was food, it would be eaten.

Jackson Bole was an open book. He didn't mind personal questions, really, but this one did make him pause. Because. Uh. Well. It was a little embarrassing. "I, uh, I'm not in uni yet, still trying to figure that out... But, uh, sometimes I'm part-time at Stemp House and with the rest of my time I've really been trying to explore. Shadowing all sorts of people, going in for informational interviews, y'know... All that jazz. It's weird, isn't it?" He mussed his hair as he mused. "Like one day, we're sitting in class, raising our hands to ask permission to use the bathroom and then the next day, everyone's just, like, telling us we have to decide what we want to be doing for the rest of our lives?"

It made..... No sense. Not to Jackson, anyway.

Uh. "What about you? What are you up to?"

Uh. "What about you? What are you up to?"

Was she laughing at his stupid joke or at his stupid smile? Honora didn't know. "Yes," was all she said. His assessment, joking or not, of her thoughts on lists was...pretty accurate. She did have a bucket list of her own, after all. And she'd even crossed some items off of it. She supposed...maybe a lot of people with bucket lists never crossed anything off?

She did smile, however, at the conclusion that all younger siblings were picky eaters. "Hopefully they grow out of it," she said. "I'd like to cook more interesting things for holidays some day.

She looked on curiously at Jack's...reaction to her question. Had she actually unnerved him? While it was a personal question, she didn't think it was one that regularly caused embarrassment. She definitely thought he shouldn't be embarrassed talking to her about it. It wasn't like she had her life plan together, either. See: favorite hobby #1, TBD. "It sounds like you're busy, at least," she said encouragingly. Like, he was actively trying to determine what he wanted to do. "It is weird...I don't know how anyone decides. Or at least, how anyone decides, and sticks with that same thing forever." Again, see hobby #1. "I wanted to go to uni, but my stepmum needed help at the B&B so...I've been working there, and trying to save up by living at home."

She shrugged. "It's looking more and more like I won't go to uni, but maybe someday? Business at the B&B isn't great, so I'll probably find another job soon." Hopefully. She knew the job market wasn't superb, especially since she had tried to find a job in London after graduation but it made more sense to live at home. And she hadn't had the apparition license at first, and she didn't want to floo to work every day.

Either way, Jack(son) was pleased. Making someone laugh had to make the list of top 5 most magical feelings. There he went with lists again. Maybe he actually was cut out for that #ListLife. Honora was rubbing off on him, eh? Heh. He couldn't wait to recount the story to Jorgie later. She'd probably roll her eyes in that loving way of hers. She never did seem to laugh as hard as he did when it came to his corny jokes.

"Agreed," he smiled, thinking to Sienna and how likely it might be that she'd start adventuring with food. Though, to be fair, she was pretty picky in most things. That's just how Si was though and he loved her for it, of course. Little sisters, heh. "Hope you get more opportunity to experiment!" Food experimentations were some of the best kind. "Let me know if you ever need a taste tester, yeah?" He'd be happy to lend a hand... Or a stomach, rather.

And it wasn't so much that her question regarding the future had unnerved him. It just, er, it caught him off guard. He wasn't ever sure when it came to ~that stuff~ (read: planning ahead), y'know? Liked to avoid the topic whenever he could because if you didn't think about it, then it wasn't a problem. Or, uh, it just didn't seem to be as big a problem. "Oh, definitely. Kind of exhausting, but I'm not very good at sitting still." Literally and figuratively. "Yeah, wow, I definitely feel that, yeah. That's sort of my problem, there are so many things that sound cool, but, like, do I really want to be stuck with just one of them for the rest of my life? I dunno..." It was a conversation he had with himself plenty of times. Never seemed to reach a good conclusion though. That was the main issue.

"It's real cool that you get to help with the family business though," he offered her a genuine smile as he spoke. "How've you been getting on with living at home?" Jackson loved living at home. It was the liiiiiiiiiife. He did want to move out eventually, but he knew how lucky he was to be able to stay with his family for a little bit, at least until he got things figured out. But he also knew that not everyone felt the same way. "Yeah? What sorts of jobs are you interested in?" It was lowkey comforting that they were sort of in similar boats. Jackson often felt like his boat was sinking ten feet underneath sea level. But uh, maybe that was just the overthink taking reign again.

She would definitely keep him in mind if she needed a taste tester. Hopefully she could cook something nice sometime for someone. If that wasn't hte vaguest hope ever. Her extended family liked to eat, at least. Maybe at the next Svensson family gathering, she could do the cooking. "Yes, it sounds like you understand my #1 hobby dilemma," she said with another laugh. She wasn't sure it could be considered fear, but she did feel odd about the thought of committing to a singular top hobby. Or job, for that matter.

She shrugged, thinking about the somewhat awkward situation at home. "It's...fine, I suppose," she said. "I like being near my granddad, he tells really good stories and knows a lot of random history." That was the one perk of living at home. "My dad himself isn't around very much, he travels for work. And my stepmum...we don't see eye to eye." Like on how to do housework, for starters. Her stepmum had been very adamant that magic not be used in the B&B, even when there was nary a Muggle around.

"I'd like to work with people, I think, as a start. I don't really know what else...flexibility, I guess? To find my #1 hobby?"

Her watch hooted, prompting her to shuffle the books she was holding again to check it. "Oh, golly, I need to get going." This was only a side errand, after all, and not her original reason for coming to town. Honora headed toward the checkout counter. "Tell Jorgie I said hello, right?"

Yeah, Jackson did understand the #1 hobby dilemma. More than he'd be willing to admit, or uh, well he sort of did admit it. Jack didn't really hold back when it came to these things... Quite obviously. But hopefully hearing it from someone else would help Honora feel a little better about it? If that was the sort of thing that had her feeling uneasy the same way it had Jackson feeling uneasy. The world tended to favor choosing just one path, there wasn't really a good place for a Jack(son) of all trades, who couldn't seem to master a single one.

Despite this, however, he really was enjoying the gap year. It was stressful at times, but for the most part it meant seeing Jorgie as frequently as he wanted and spending much needed time with his family. In the same way that Honra liked being near her granddad, Jackson enjoyed spending time with his parents. "Oh yeah, I'd imagine that can be stressful," he replied earnestly when she spoke about her stepmum. "I'm glad you can spend some extra time with your grandad though, that sounds really nice."

Working with people sounded really nice too, Jackson knew that's something he wanted in his future as well. He was just about to say as much and, perhaps, to ask her more about this journey to finding the #1 hobby, when Honora realized it was time to get going. It was probably a good time for Jack to figure out where he actually meant to be, but because he didn't want to make things awkward by walking in the same direction as she did after they said their goodbyes, he uhh... simply pulled another book of the shelf. "Will do! M'sure that'll put a smile on her face." And even if it didn't, it put one on his, maybe that counted for something? "It was good to see you, Honora. Enjoy the rest of your day," he waved as she moved toward the checkout.

So uh.

Books.
