My first experience was actually negative. My brother knew I was petrified of snakes so he made me watch the Chamber of Secrets KNOWING it would give me nightmares, I was, like, 8 at the time. He felt bad after a few months and encouraged me to read the books because he thought I'd actually like the series, so he gave me his copy of Sorcerer's Stone. After that first book, I was hooked!
