Review: Harry Potter Kymera wand

Deep down, every Harry Potter fan wishes on some level that they could do a bit of magic with a wand. While there are hundreds of collectible wands available from the Harry Potter films, they are merely nothing more than ornate pieces of wood or plastic.

The Kymera wand is quite a bit different, and gives the incredible illusion of being able to do a bit of magic with a wave of the wand. The wand, black with a fancy handle - most similar to Narcissa Malfoy's in the films - is battery-operated and presumably has the same wiring as a television and cable remote control does. With that, you can 'teach' the wand several controls on the remote - any button you'd like to have the wand mimic is available. So, once you learn the dozen or so available wand movements (from flicking up, down, left, and right, to jutting back and forth), you can use those movements to turn your TV on and off, and even mess about with channels and volume.

So, the days of wishing that 'Accio Remote!' existed is quite good, as your wand can do the remote controls for you. The wand owner, however, has to master the moves, otherwise the wand may not be able to distinguish between a swish and a turn of the wand for remote changes. It is a bit sensitive when it comes to the way it handles, so be cautious of how you move it. As mentioned before, as there are only a dozen or so movements, there are just as many remote controls possible, given that you can't use the same movement for more than one control. In that instance, you choose which buttons you want to programme into the wand.

While there are technicalities, nothing beats the feeling of swishing the wand and actually seeing it turn on your television. You know how it's happening, but the illusion of magic is mind-boggling and fantastic. Just for that, the Kymera wand is unique and most impressive for the die-hard Harry Potter fan.

The Kymera Magic Wand Remote Control, by The Wand Company, can be ordered at Amazon.com.
