Disney’s Onward is simultaneously a grand adventure and a tearjerker. It covers strong themes such as parental death while incorporating quests and magic. The main character, an elf named Ian (voiced by Tom Holland), discovers that he has magic and is able to bring his dad back to life for 24 hours! Unfortunately, his older brother Barley (voiced by Chris Pratt) messes up the spell. As a result, their dad has reappeared only from the waist down, leaving him unable to hear or see them. The subsequent journey involves the two brothers figuring out how to bring back the top half of their dad. It brings the two brothers closer together, features a lot of magic, and presents the coming-of-age story of a 16-year-old elf. Director Dan Scanlon had me in tears one moment, then giggling the next. The film balances serious versus funny scenes perfectly. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this movie to anyone — child or adult.
Disney’s Onward opens in theaters Friday, March 6.
