Review: Evanna Lynch in 'Houdini' the play

Houdini the play, as the title suggests, tells the story of the brothers Theo and Harry Houdini, two magicians and escape artists who start out with a plan to be the greatest magic act the world has ever seen.

We are introduced to the pair early on in their careers, whilst they are still experiencing some teething troubles with their act. And then we meet Bess, (played by Evanna Lynch) who we fear could potentially split the pair up, but it becomes clear that her intentions are good, and she very quickly marries the eldest brother Harry. All seems to be going well, and the Houdini’s receive a life changing offer of a big-time show, something they’ve all dreamed of, but of course there is a catch. The promoter has no room for double acts, and only wants Harry.

The play itself, presents many possible dilemmas and conflicts which could see the characters falling out, but what makes it different is it keeps a sense of loyalty within the characters and never really descends into treachery and betrayal, and so I believe this benefits the audience and gives a feel good factor out of adversity. There are many relatable themes, and while at times it leaps from drama to almost pantomime, there is a wonderful mixture to keep you entertained, with good build-ups and climaxes, and the odd explosion thrown in for good measure.

Having not heard of the actors portraying the Brothers Houdini, I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Jamie Nichols (Harry) and Stuart Brennan (Theo) handled both the showmanship of magicians, and the dramatic elements of two brothers, perfectly, and showed off their acting chops to a fine degree, and I must say, they will be ones to watch in the near future.

Evanna Lynch was very enjoyable to watch as Bess Houdini, she had the allure of a showgirl and drew the audience in with her whimsical and enchanting voice. It was impressive to hear her American accent, and she also showed she has what it takes to be a serious dramatic actress, and I look forward to seeing what she does next.

Houdini the play, is a fun ride, with a mixture of tricks, illusions and drama, and boasts some great fresh talent to bring the story to life. An enjoyable couple of hours at the Theatre Royal Windsor.
